The Faringdon Tapestry is a community project. Started in 2018, the theme of the Tapestry is trade in Faringdon and it showcases the change in trade and commerce throughout history. The project brought together beginner stitcher's as well as those very skilled in cross stitch, tapestry and embroidery. Individual pieces were then sewn together to create an impressive wall hanging. The project was funded by Faringdon Town Council and Vale of White Horse District Council, and sewing supplies were very generously donated by local residents. The Tapestry was unveiled on the 11th July in the Pump House and an afternoon tea was held to thank the community stitchers for all their hard work. The beautiful piece was unveiled by Faringdon Town Mayor Cllr. Dr Mike Wise and community stitchers Siobhan McElroy and Anna Fletcher. The Faringdon Tapestry is now hung at the entrance of the Faringdon Museum in the Pump House for the community to enjoy.

WHO’S NEXT?
The Dog Studio Dog Grooming and Hydrotherapy Centre Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Faringdon Bell Ringers You will have seen that we rang a quarter peal of Grandsire Triples for Paul Walker’s Ordination and a very good quarter it was, I hope you heard it. You don’t know what a Quarter Peal of Grandsire Triples is ? If you’re sitting comfortably I’ll tell you. After the reformation, in the time of Henry VII, who had destroyed much of the authority of the clergy young men went into church towers and enjoyed swinging the bells. Tudor ghetto-blasters ! Queen Elizabeth encouraged it as it kept hooligans off the street. Foreign visitors were astounded by the amount of bell ringing. By swinging the bells more and more until they were turning a full circle they found that they could make much more noise and that they could control the bells’ speed and therefore alter the order in which they rang. English change ringing had been born. In any given piece of ringing we attempt to strike the bells in a different order every time they turn over. With two bells there are only two possible orders : ding dong and dong ding. With three bells there six possibilities. With seven there are 5040 different possible changes. That’s called a peal and takes about 3 hours. A quarter peal takes about 45 minutes and you can work out how many changes that is. Good English ringing has a steady rhythm and you can hear each bell striking accurately in its place. There are many systems, or methods, to enable the ringers to generate different changes without two bells striking together, the bellringer’s cardinal sin. Many are produced by computer and are named after the place where they were first rung. Grandsire as you might imagine is an old traditional method. The second part of the name, Triples, means that seven bells were changing. The Vale ringers activities this month have centred on Uffington. We were invited to an evening quiz and excellent supper on 12th July and a joint ringing practice on 16th.
Faringdon Business Breakfast Club With a welcome drop in temperature we gathered at Sudbury House Hotel for our July meeting. It was great to see a few new faces in the room and a very warm welcome to Monica, David and Angela who were attending for the first time. In response to a member’s survey we decided to hold a mini workshop that aimed to identify where each of us might find our ideal customer on another person’s contact list. The ’60-second’ pitch round identified a wide range of services on offer from those attending. In no particular order of priority, we heard about Holistic and Alternative Therapies, Voice Recognition Software, Accountancy, Coaching, Digital Marketing, Book Publishing, Commercial Property, Learning and Development and Financial Services. For any existing or new companies in and around Faringdon there is a tremendous range of expertise available within the Club. Graham Dawson facilitated the mini workshop which made a slow start but once everyone got comfortable with the concept some great ideas on who we might be put in touch with were generated. Conceptually the aim was to see how the combined contact lists of everyone in attendance might be used for others to grow their business. The plan was sound and with a few running adjustments we made good progress. Some follow-up work needs to be done to consolidate some of these potential leads We concluded the meeting with announcements of future local events in Wantage, Highworth, Fairford and Lechlade, as well as Netwalking. Our next meeting will be on 5 August when Jonathan Russell will share his views on Past, Present and Future. He will look at our current position and see how it can be linked to history and speculate how that will influence the future. https://fbbc-networking.co.uk/event/getting-the-best-from-your-contacts/

NUTRITION WEIGHT MANAGEMENT AND BEHAVIOUR CHANGE COACH
Tel: 07840 739545 Get off the Diet Rollercoaster….. When you think of weight loss do you immediately think of denial, rigid restrictions and calorie counting? Well what if I was to tell you that it doesn’t need to be like that? The fundamental mistake a lot of people make is that they view weight loss as something that has a time limit, they are ‘on a diet,’ as if at some point in the future they will be ‘off’ it which is a recipe (excuse the pun) for regression at a later date. Weight management is achieved by eating a balanced diet and managing your weigh; keeping it at a healthy level so you are less susceptible to diet related health issues, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease etc. If you are currently over or under weight or eat an unhealthy diet, management means addressing habits, behaviours and preconceptions that have formed over your lifetime and changing them permanently, not just because you are going on holiday or need to fit into a new outfit for a special occasion. A change of behaviour is the foundation to successful weight management. Take the following two scenarios, you are passing a wellknown fast food establishment, you smell the food cooking (cue), your mouth starts to salivate (crave), you take a detour and buy something (respond) and then you eat it (reward). It’s 10am which is coffee break, this is your cue for eating biscuits (you always eat a biscuit with your coffee), you get the craving for the biscuit and so you respond by automatically reaching for the biscuits and eating them. We are programmed to want instant gratification and the types of foods mentioned above give it, but the long-term consequence will be weight gain. However, small changes and perseverance that generate little reward in the early stages will, in the long run, give the greatest and most significant reward, weight loss and better health. I must stress that it does not mean that you can’t ever have fast food or a biscuit but that you make a conscious choice of when to eat them. Maintaining good habits will become second nature and this is key to managing your weight rather than ‘going on’ a diet. If you would like to find out more about changing your habits and behaviours (they don’t have to be diet related) drop me an email. Theresa.moynihan@outlook.com www.theresamoynihan.com

by Jane Harper It’s easy to think of the crime fiction genre being an oversubscribed area, with new authors popping up seemingly every day. Just what is it about crime fiction that makes it endure? I fell in love with Agatha Christie as a child after seeing the legendary David Suchet dramas on ITV. Never a car boot sale went by without me rooting through the booksellers to get my hands on vintage copies with amazing characterful covers. It’s a passion that’s never died. Just last year I managed to track down a bulk load of Christie books on eBay that I’d never read. I also found a set of beautiful faux-vintage ones that I bought mainly just to appreciate how attractive they are. Liking Christie led to a lifetime love affair with crime fiction. As I write, I’m staring out with full sets of Ruth Rendell, Donna Leon and Ian Rankins on my smallest bookshelf. I’m very fond of Val McDermid too; the last one of hers took me so much by surprise at the end that I almost missed a train home from Marylebone. And a chance encounter with the 1939 Basil Rathbone film version of the Hound of Baskervilles twenty-five years ago set me up as a Sherlockian for life. Which leads me to this month’s book, The Lost Man by Jane Harper. Harper has hit the world of crime fiction like a thunderbolt. Harper’s The Dry – set in the Australian outback – was a phenomenon. And with good reason: it was gritty, characterful and compulsive reading. Her latest book – The Lost Man – has that same ‘can’t put it down’ quality. The body of Cameron Bright is found by his two brothers in the outback - unrelenting country with miles and miles between cattle stations. The novel follows the perspective of the elder brother Nathan, as he sets about finding the truth about Cameron’s death. What led him to that desolate place without his radio equipment working? And what secrets and lies will his search uncover? Harper’s star is on the rise – this latest book simmering with jealousy and betrayal. The landscape is vividly drawn, and seems to sizzle with the atmosphere of an intense Australian high season. The conclusion is a study in frayed human nerves and the dark side of love. Miss this one at your peril.

Roberts Reflections!

Welcome to my latest ramblings! Some may not be welcome but are meant sincerely. Our woodland wildflower garden is slowly establishing and will hopefully be a great success. Hay making is being made easier this year, thankfully. The cutting certainly attracts many Red Kites, wherever the tractor is working across fields in this area of the country. As I write, the weather’s cooler and the choice of times to exercise or train dogs is wider, with a lesser risk of potentially-lethal hyperthermia. Don’t forget that dogs don’t normally wear foot coverings and that hyperthermia can still strike through a humid, fully cloudy day at this time of year. I’d like to also mention dogs and livestock and what we should all be doing to minimise or negate any avoidable risks. Are you a responsible dog owner, asks the Kennel Club and NFU 2019 poster? This applies to being around livestock just as much as taking the right decisions during excessive heat! The poster gives advice when on a farmland footpath walk. Always keep your dog in sight and under control. Keep dogs on a short lead around cows and sheep. Clean up after your dog – bag it and bin it wherever you are. Never get between cows and their calves. Walk around the herd and re-join the path when safe to do so. If cattle follow you – stay calm. walk quickly and quietly round the herd. If you feel threatened by cattle, take the lead off the collar, so releasing the dog, then you can both get to safely separately. Always remember – Is your garden secure? Many dog attacks on sheep happen when the dog has escaped from the house or garden. There have been many headline events on radio, television and electronically. With Greenpeace and Climate Emergency, their independent finding of minute fragments of plastic in all the major British rivers tested. In our drinking water too? Mental health has also been found to be a factor in farm safety, with many major agricultural shows, now inviting anyone wishing to know more or seek help, find the health club on each show ground signposted, they have professionals there, who can give that help. Sir David Attenborough was on the Diamond Stage at Glastonbury Festival this year, talking about his new BBC series on the problems of the Seven continents on this precious World. Sir David also praised the great lengths that Festival organisers had gone to set up recycling for those plastic items that couldn’t yet be substituted for “greener” versions at this iconic event. Both national treasures known as Sir David Attenborough and Desmond Morris, the broadcaster, author (including The Naked Ape), surrealist painter and natural commentator, are both going strong in their early nineties. It is alleged that they once discussed one aspect of their busy, successful lives, namely such a fulfilled life – they have only had normal exercise, no gym and no diets – and much scientific curiosity, heaps of respect, observational skills as well as communication skills. Enjoy the rest of the Summer. Robert Elliott

War Memorial Trust Remembrance Exhibition The War Memorial Trust and the Royal British Legion will be holding its eleventh exhibition of war time memorabilia in the Old Town Hall to reflect on the impact that wars have made on local families. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War as well as the 75th anniversary of D-Day. If you have any memorabilia, stories, photographs or any documents that you would like to share concerning the events leading up to the outbreak of WW2 and its aftermath in 1939, or the events of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy in 1944, please bring them to the Faringdon Town Council offices (in the Pump House on the Market Place) before Wednesday, 6th November; the office is open between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. If you have any interesting memorabilia concerning other conflicts please bring them along. We would be particularly interested in stories and memorabilia on how WW2 affected families on the ‘home front’; e.g. blackout, rationing, evacuees, daily life, etc. Any precious items that you may think to be too valuable to exhibit can be photocopied and the Trust will take care to return original items to their owners. The exhibition will be open to the public from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th November, and after the Remembrance Day ceremony on Sunday 10th until 1:00 pm. Volunteers who would like to help in manning the exhibition should contact the Council Offices on 01367 240281.

Sun Damage & Skincare Sunshine can put you at risk of developing a wide range of cosmetic and medical skin problems. UV rays not only dry and burn your skin, they accelerate the visible signs of ageing including sun spots, freckles, pigmentation change, reduced skin elasticity, fine lines, wrinkles and increasing the risk of developing skin cancers such as melanomas. Whilst relaxing or exercising outdoors has a number of health benefits, the big mistake is failing to use sunscreen to protect your skin. UV rays are present all year round, not just in the summer months. The different types of UV light interact with our skin at different depths. UVB rays (with a shorter wavelength than UVA) mostly penetrate the upper skin layers, it primarily causes skin reddening and sunburn. UVA rays have the ability to penetrate the skin more deeply, damaging the lower skin layers. Daily use of a broadspectrum sunscreen which offers UVA and UVB protection is advisable. A minimum Sun Protection Factor of 25 or above is recommend for the UK, increasing this for young or sensitive skin. Many daily moisturisers, tinted moisturisers and foundations include a level of SPF these days, if your favourite product doesn’t, then apply a separate SPF over your daily moisturiser. However, if you are already noticing the signs of premature ageing and sun damage, all is not lost. There are many different treatments available on the market depending on your requirements and budget; for instance The Déesse Pro LED Mask uses clinically proven wavelengths of low level light therapy (LLLT) by way of high quality surface mounted light emitting diodes in five variations to expose the skin to five wavelengths of light. Delivered at safe pain-free therapeutic doses and suitable for most skin types, the Déesse Pro LED Mask stimulates natural cellular responses. These responses lead to skin rejuvenation and the improvement of common problematic skin conditions like acne, premature ageing, pigmentation change and regulating the production of melanin. Ruth 07969 451 366 ‘Sweet Dreams’ Did you know.... bedtime routines should last a maximum of 30 minutes? This is the time from when you put them in the bath, to the time you turn their light off. The reason for this is that the sleep hormone, Melatonin, is stimulated after a warm bath, and prepares the body for sleep. If you leave it too long before putting your child to bed after their bath, the Melatonin wears off, and they become overtired, and much more difficult to settle. You can have a ‘Wined Down’ period before they go for a bath, where they can have a drink and watch a quiet tv programme, snuggled up on the sofa with you. This is good as they will then be calmer when you take them for a bath. As soon as they are in the bath, set your timer, so you can get them out, in their pyjamas in time for them to have a story.
office@highworthtravel.co.uk www.highworthtravel.co.uk
Reading children bedtime stories is great, and is very beneficial to their development, but be very clear and consistent when it comes to the number of books you are reading, as lots of children ask for numerous books every night, and before you know it, you have been in their room for over an hour and they are still wide awake! Ask your child to pick one long story or two short stories before they get in to bed, and don’t let them convince you to read anymore! If you are struggling with bedtimes, or a child who is difficult to settle or wakes frequently in the night, please get in touch. I offer lots of services around sleep, and I can tailor them to suit you. The summer holidays are a great time to address sleep problems, as everything slows down a little.

What a massive weekend in Faringdon! 43 bands, a play, a comedy night, 2 DJ sets, dance classes, street performers, balancabillity bikes, stalls and the most delicious spread of crocheted food you have ever seen. FollyFest 2019 was a cracker for sure, and the FollyFest inbox has been swamped with congratulations. It was all brought about by the hard working FollyFest team of volunteers as well as the PumpHouse project, The Place, Faringdon Amateur dramatic society, the Crafty Crew, the Piano Gallery and our generous sponsors (Tesco, Perry Bishop & Chambers, The Town Council, Shaw City, The Old Crown and Howdens) and all the musicians who played for free at the festival. Old people and young, born and bred as well as new to the town residents all came together to have some fun in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The Market Square was packed when Firm local favourites Young Rosie and Boogey Me played alongside newer-to-Faringdon acts like The Tribe, Blind Lemon Blues Band and Be Like Water, all of whom went down a storm. FollyFest 2020 is set at July 10—12, and we already have a long list of bands requesting to play. Word is getting out about the quirky, family focused music & community arts festival, with the best quality sound and well organised fringe events. We are looking for sponsors, artists, performers, musicians, fund raisers, backstage crew, and everything in between, so if you fancy volunteering, get in touch on facebook https://www.facebook.com/FollyFest or through our website http://faringdonfollyfest.co.uk/contact-us/

On Sunday 7th July 2019 the Faringdon Cycle Training Park was officially opened. It was fabulous to see so many people there (nearly 250) having fun and using the wonderful facility. The Cycle Training Park has been delivered by Farcycles, the local community cycling group who, in 2018, came up with an idea to build a safe area where everyone could learn to, or improve their cycling skills. All that was needed was some money! Over the following twelve months a major fund-raising campaign was organised by Lyn and David Williamson and members of Farcycles. With a lot of hard work by Lyn and David together with the Farcycles members the funds were raised, and construction of the Cycle Park began in the Folly Sports Park in April this year. As you can see there were dozens of young cyclists at the opening ceremony and luckily all of them whizzed around the cycling tracks very safely. It is open to the public and sometimes on a Sunday morning it will be more like a scene from rush hour than a quiet local park, with many children enjoying the opportunity to cycle safely. There is a green area that has a rubberised surface similar to playgrounds so that early learners need not worry too much about hurting themselves should they topple over. We were very please the mayor of Faringdon Cllr Dr Michael Wise formally ‘cut the tape’ and thanks to Highworth Silver Training Band who played beautifully on a very hot afternoon. Farcycles will be running official courses with members who have trained as instructors in ‘Balanceability’ and ‘Bikeability’. Farcycles would like to thank all the contributors to this wonderful project and to encourage as many people as possible to use it. Finishing touches to the area are being made with models and replicas of the local area.

Everything you do makes a difference! Everything you do makes a difference “It was something you said that stuck in my mind. Doing something is better than doing nothing, and every little bit counts”, a client recently repeated to me. It was a Eureka moment when he realised that it was possible to do more by doing less! Rather than putting aside an hour for training, which he found difficult to do, he put aside 15 mins each day to walk on the treadmill or do squats and step-ups on his Powerplate. By breaking his exercise down into manageable chunks he’s achieving more than he ever has. We can do the same for our eating regime too. Eating one less biscuit or drinking a smaller glass of wine than usual can have a positive effect long term. Conversely, eating an additional biscuit or a larger glass of wine on a regular basis will have an adverse effect on your waistline! Do something! Change one thing! ● Anything is better than nothing! The reason we do things in life is often to make ourselves feel better. We join a gym – that shows we are making an effort, even if we don’t go to it. We have a glass of wine at the end of a long day – it’s our reward for working hard! Both can be seen as our attempts to feel better or at least cope with how we feel about our life. Of course one has to have a reason to make any changes but whatever the reason ‘The more you do the more you get’. ● A little focus over a period of time will make it easier to tackle bigger issues ● Situations can affect your choices ● Accountability often keeps you motivated ● If you change nothing – then nothing changes I am assuming by reading this article some of you might want to make changes and need help to get started. Sometimes we do not want to change anything, and that is perfectly ok. Maybe we are not motivated to do so. Some of us, however, fear change and feel it is better to stay as we are, it’s safer or easier. I respect that and ask that you are honest about any decisions you make. I am in the business of helping people with their fitness, health and sense of well being and for those wishing to attempt positive change I would recommend that you: ● Pledge to do one thing ● Ask someone to check up on you ● Keep a record ● When you are ready add another change For those needing a little motivation knowing that you can make a small change is often a good starting point to larger things. ● Take a walk ● Cut out one of your snacks ● Eat an extra portion of vegetables ● Add one exercise to your daily routine ● Tell a friend about the changes you are making I’m sure you can do it! Everything you do makes a difference. Rich Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com

Slimmers from Faringdon United Church groups are stepping out for charity this August to celebrate losing a staggering 269 stone so far this year. In celebration of Slimming World’s 50th golden anniversary year, members are taking part in a brand-new fundraising campaign for 2019 – the Golden Body Magic Challenge. The event invites members to complete 50 miles over the month of August, covering around 3,500 miles between them. Participants can choose to walk, run, swim or cycle to reach the total and the group aims to raise awareness of how activity can be beneficial for health and mental wellbeing. As part of the Golden Body Magic Challenge, the 115, who meet weekly at Faringdon United Church, will cover 1.8 miles a day, each day for 28 days. The group will be taking part in return for sponsorship for Cancer Research UK. A charity Louise Preece the consultant is very passionate about – and the Faringdon slimmers can’t wait to lace up their trainers. Local Slimming World Consultant Louise Preece is organising the fundraising challenge and says her members are filled with confidence and energy thanks to their weight losses: “I’m so proud of my members who have set themselves the challenge of covering 50 miles this next month. It’s such a special time in the Slimming World calendar with it being our 50th golden birthday year and to be sharing the celebrations by taking part in this huge new campaign feels so exciting. Summer Red Wine My thoughts this month run to what sort of red wines to drink in the warmer month ahead. After all we have a lot of lovely rose wines to drink and lovely whites, all nicely chilled and hopefully with fresh fruits in the flavours. So that leaves us with the red wines. While looking at the reds, the first point is to think of the wines with good fruit flavours, but little tannin (the furry sensation on your teeth) which tends to make a wine feel heavier or thicker. Also I steer away from wines that have been stored in oak barrels for some time. In fact, we are generally looking for young red wines as the fruit is still dominant in the flavours you can taste. So from France, I suggest the Cote du Rhone wines, Beaujolais, and generally wines from the Languedoc region in the South. Also try Pinot Noir wines, the supermarkets all have own brand versions of many of these, so they are easy to find. If you like Italian, I find Chianti works all year round and in Spain avoid the Rioja and Douro as they are too tannin and oak dominant, Instead, look for wines made with the Garnacha grape (Grenache in French) , which are lighter. From California, their Pinot Noir wines are good, but I have found it harder to get a Zinfandel that is light enough for summer drinking. Down in Chile, there are some delightful Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Grenache wines that will do the job. I am skipping Argentina as they are mostly Malbec and that is another of the heavy wines with tannin and oak coming through. On to Australia and New Zealand, well there is so much choice but I suggest the Merlot wines are best for summer drinking, the Shiraz that they are famous for is a bit stronger in flavours and can have a lot of tannin. I had a good look round the local supermarkets and there are some great bargains to be found. Watch out for the 25% off, 6 mixed bottles of wines, these offer superb value and I always recommend that you buy at the top of your budget after the discount is taken off, then you get to try a more expensive wine for a lower price. So my top choices are Merlot from the Americas or Australia, Cote du Rhone in France and Chianti from Italy. Last but not least - to chill red wine or leave it at room temperature? After some experiments, I find that popping one of these light reds into the fridge for 20 minutes will help to bring out the fruit flavours and make the drink more refreshing. Please don’t leave the bottle in the fridge for hours as this makes it too cold ( 5C ). The 20 minutes should bring the wine down to 12 - 14C typically. Remember that the room temperature that red wine is often served at is only 18C, so on a hot summers day, your red could be at 25C and frankly this temperature can alter the taste in a bad way. So, please enjoy your wines and remember to drink responsibly.

Your Own Home?
“Imagine holding the key to your own home.” Young working people, growing families looking for more space, or those looking to downsize now the children have flown, at Waymark we appreciate how involving and at times, daunting, the prospect of buying a property can be. Borrowing the money possibly being the scariest prospect of all. For non-New Home purchases For those not wanting a brand new home or perhaps not wanting to live on a new estate which is still under construction, you will not be able to benefit from the Government backed Help to Buy but you will still have a wide array of mortgage products to choose from. With interest rates remaining at unprecedented low levels for a considerable period of time (remember the early 1990’s anyone and the spike of rates reaching 15%? - and worse in the 1970’s but clearly I don’t remember that!) and with the level of house sales having reduced over recent years, mortgage companies are having to be more competitive then ever to win your business. Not only are rates historically low, the term of loans has now extended well beyond the previous 25 year norm. 35 years or longer can now be obtained, all to help keep the monthly payments low (and the mortgage companies returns a little higher!). Instead of the Governments 20% deposit, the “Bank of Mum and Dad” is busier than ever as parents do what they can to assist the next generation on to the housing ladder with the security and hedge against inflation owning property typically provides. Don’t forget that first time buyers can currently save on Stamp Duty which all helps to ease the up front costs of realising the dream of owning your own home. New Homes and Help to Buy: Available to first-time buyers and existing homeowners who want to buy a ‘new home’ the scheme has been a huge success with around 50% of all new homes being sold to buyers using the scheme. Under the scheme you can borrow 20% of the purchase price interest-free for the first five years as long as you have at least a 5% deposit. The purchase price must be no more than £600,000. (The figures are slightly different in London.) As you would expect there are certain rules and restrictions which can apply (it cannot be used for buy-to-let purposes for example) and as the scheme is relatively new we don’t know the full implications in later years as to how this may impact those homes purchased under the scheme although we have already seen it distort prices between the price paid when new and the immediate drop in value as a second hand property (no longer being able to qualify for Help to Buy.) Whatever and however you decide to purchase, now remains a very good time to secure your own home and we look forward to helping you along the way.
