The Johannesburg sky line has three distinctive towers, The Ponty Tower, The Hillbrow Tower and the one on the cover, The Sentech Tower, originally called the Albert Hertzog Tower, named after the late apartheid minister of posts and telegraphs, whose greatest claim to fame was a speech in which he said “SA would get television over his dead body!” After 15 years of its life been used exclusively for FM radio broadcasts, was retooled in the mid-1970's as the main television broadcast tower for Johannesburg. The tower, is still the tallest such structure in Africa….. This was taken on 11th July 15, a beautifully warm day, although the middle of winter, on a Saturday afternoon drive, through the centre of Johannesburg.

WHO’S NEXT?
Business Update Now summer is well and truly here, it’s a joy to wander round the Faringdon markets, be it one of the regular offerings or a speciality event organised by the Town Team. The success of the recent Young Entrepreneur’s market has prompted the Chamber of Commerce to sponsor a ‘Young Apprentice’ competition involving local schools, Scouts, guides and other youth organisations. FollyFest is just around the corner (7th-9th August) and it is fantastic to see so many local businesses taking advantage of this event to promote themselves and the town. It’s not just us who are taking advantage of the good weather to get out and enjoy ourselves. Take a look at Fairford and Lechlade – their very friendly local business club have invited Faringdon businesses and people to support their annual social event on Saturday 5th September at the Trout Inn, Lechlade. It is free to attend and includes a car boot style trade show called “Boot Up Ur Business” – bring along promotional material about your business in the boot of your car! There is plenty else going on such as river cruises with Cotswold Boat Hire as well as a barbeque and music. The fun starts at 3:30pm - see http://www.flbc.org.uk/ for details.

0 0 0 1 You may have noticed that very often Scottish whisky distilleries are to be found in scenic locations, hidden deep in the hills. Historically, there were various reasons for this, ranging from the necessity to be near a good water source to the desire to evade the Excise men. A distillery tucked away in the fold of a mountain, with a pure, clean river close by, filled these criteria well and with the increasingly punitive taxes that were being applied to whisky you can understand why illegal distilleries proliferated in these inaccessible locations in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Situated in the ‘Valley of the smooth flowing one’ (which refers to the river Livet but is a marketing department’s dream catchphrase!), The Glenlivet on Speyside was originally one of these illegal distilleries, at a period when there was possibly as many as 200 in the area. Highly thought of even whilst still illegal, being specially requested by King George IV on a visit in 1822, it was George Smith of The Glenlivet distillery’s decision in 1824 to take advantage of the recent Excise Act and obtain a licence that allowed the distillery to progress. Although the move was not popular with fellow illegal distillers in the area it meant The Glenlivet was not fettered by having to hide its activities and went from strength to strength. With whisky from Glenlivet distillery being renowned for its quality a rather ludicrous situation arose whereby even distilleries at some distance from the Livet glen would add the area name to their own distillery name and so, to prevent any confusion, in 1880 a legal action was taken which allowed the exclusive designation of ‘The Glenlivet’ to only apply to whisky produced at the Smith’s distillery (although other distilleries have continued to add it to their names as a hyphenated prefix or suffix even to this day). Using unpeated malt and a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks for maturation the modern day whisky is an elegant, fruity and floral Speysider that is one of the top selling malts in the world. The judicious use of the different cask types in varying proportions take this whisky from delicate and smooth expressions such as the 12 year old or the new Founder’s Reserve, through the rich, creamy intenseness of the 15 year old that is matured in French oak casks, on to the fruity, spicy complexity of the 18 year old and the rich, warm, sherry influenced 21 year old. And for something really different, if you feel like treating yourself, we currently have the cask strength 17 year old (normally only available at the distillery) and a vintage The Glenlivet from 1946. Whichever expression of The Glenlivet you try you will be tasting a period of whisky history encapsulated in a dram – far more fun than your school history lessons ever were!

It's a first for Far Runners! We Far Runners love a local race and it doesn't get much more local than Buscot Park. For the third year running, the Far Runners turned out in force for the Buscot Park 5k and 10k runs held on Sunday 5th July. These runs comprise a 1 or 2 lap course through the beautiful grounds and, although it's a friendly, informal race, this isn't for the fainthearted. Alongside dappled woodland, there are also long, exposed tracks and some gruelling hills, with both races finishing in a particularly challenging climb back up to the house. As in previous years, the Faringdon and District Rotary Club organised gorgeous weather, No1 Brett Falcus something we were particularly grateful for at the picnic afterwards, if not so much during the actual race!!

The Buscot Park run welcomes runners of all ages and levels, and it was lovely to see so many families and little ones running together. However, we would be lying if we said we weren't extremely proud of Far Runner Brett Falcus taking first place in the 5K, coming in at a shade over 20 minutes. Our first ever win - well done Brett! Several others also managed to pull off personal bests, and Don O'Sullivan even completed both races in very respectable times - Don, you are an inspiration to us all! Over the past 3 years, we have seen this event and our club grow in numbers, and hope the trend continues. We always welcome new runners, so please come and join us; whether you can give Brett a run for his money or are just starting out, you'll be most welcome. Meetings are: Market Square Tues 6.30pm, Thurs 7pm; Faringdon Leisure Centre Sat & Sun 9.30 am. Beginners' course starting soon!

There are only 3 species on the planet that go through the menopause. Humans, orca and pilot whales. To stop breeding and then live for so long afterwards doesn’t seem like an advantageous evolutionary attribute. Chimpanzees along with most other species die soon after they are no longer able to reproduce. It is not fully understood why these three live for another third of their lives after the menopause, however it’s thought social structures play a part. The grandmother hypothesis proposes that we stop reproducing in order to help the next generation raise their young. To teach them what they know and make for a more successful second generation. In women, the changes in hormones; hot flushes and losing essential fluids through sweating can lead to dryness, anxiety, insomnia, headaches and palpitations. 75% of American women suffer menopausal symptoms, compared to only 10% of Asian women (Search pacific college menopause). This could be due to differences in diet and the use of traditional Chinese medicine, such as acupuncture.
BATHROOM SHOWROOM Open to the Public & Trade
Asian women tend to eat more vegetables and food high in phytoestrogens, such as tofu. Phytoestrogens bind to the body’s own oestrogen receptors and slowly release natural oestrogen into the body. This is helpful to alleviate menopausal symptoms, when the body’s own source of oestrogen is reducing (Search pacific college menopause). I specialise in treating women and supporting them through different phases of life. Anecdotally, I have treated women during their menopause and find women to be in a really interesting place. A place of power, wisdom and confidence. The menopause can obstruct these attributes and it is a joy to shift unwanted menopausal symptoms. Tips for the menopause:

Amidst the recent economic turmoil centred upon Greece, I present you with an alternative, positive focus from within this country, it being (naturally) - wine. Interestingly, wine production in Greece began in the middle of the third century BC in the island of Crete. Tombs discovered in Crete revealed clay winepresses and goblets which have been dated between 3000-2000 BC. The Greeks traded their wines throughout the ancient world by ship, inside sealed amphorae, which is a two handled pot with a narrow neck and a pointed base. Winemaking was spread throughout the ancient Greek civilization, extending to their colonies in Italy and Sicily around 8th century BC and later to France and Spain. Italian grape varieties Aglianico, Malvasia Bianco and Moscato are of Greek origin. Wine trade continued to expand throughout Greece’s ‘Golden Age’ (500-300BC, when Athens ruled the ancient world), reaching as far as Northern Europe and the continent of Asia. Fast forward to recent years, serious investment has seen the implementation of modern winemaking technology and subsequently a vast improvement in wine quality. Greece can boast a unique selling point (USP) of growing more than 300 indigenous or native grape varieties, many of which have been cultivated since ancient times. This range of grapes along with the moderate Greek climate, low average rainfall, moderately fertile soils and the agreeable amount of sunshine provide the basis of which to produce wines of great quality. All that remains is the education, promotion and increased availability of these wines. Here are a couple available locally: Domaine Gerovassiliou Malagousia 2014 Macedonia, Greece £14.99 Den Boer Wines This wine has an expressive aroma of exotic fruits together with pepper, orange, jasmine, fresh mixed herbs and lemon. On the palate, it is rich, with a refreshing lemon finish. A perfect match for Mediterranean dishes, seafood, poultry, light-sauced pasta dishes and fresh vegetable salads. Thiasos Red 2013 Peloponnese, Greece £6.99 Den Boer Wines Made from the indigenous agiorgitiko grape, this wine has pronounced primary fruit characters of forest fruits; redcurrants and blackcurrant's with soft, approachable tannins. It is well balanced and accompanies moussaka and stuffed vine leaves perfectly!

Jolly August Ramblings! | The Advertiser | page 13 | Welcome to the August ramblings, on our agenda will be the complex issue of dog bites – incidents rather than the popular term “attacks”, which unwisely suggests a degree of premeditated action. At a recent two day conference hosted by Victoria Stillwell in association with the University of Lincoln, it was acknowledged that in general, the likelihood of discussing the incidents of dog bites publicly without sensationalising and scare mongering was remote. Less severe bites compromise the majority of dog bites to humans and are often overlooked. One comment on the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 is that by labelling certain breeds as “dangerous” it implies that all other dogs are not. An expert witness and assessor of “dangerous dogs”, Dr Kendal Shepherd, believes that there was little evidence to suggest, deliberate training to bite. The majority of cases referred (often through veterinary practices) to behavioural counsellors were related to aggressive behaviour, surely proof that owners of dogs behaving this way can’t be automatically treated as irresponsible. The conference also had a strong theme of concern about dog bites to children, with references to the “Put the Camera Down” campaign and the Kennel Club “Safe and Sound School” initiative. The first aims to discourage the putting of children and dogs together in unsafe interactions just for “laughs” or brief public, social media fame, which can end in tragedy. Children need to be advised NOT to kiss and cuddle dogs with the innocence that they naturally have, or pat heads. Stroke along the back and always ask an owner’s permission first – teach them to recognise that canine snarls or bared teeth are definitely NOT canine smiles. Among many others, my Practice has some brilliant canine behavioural therapist back-up for referral and we’re all really grateful to them. The Kennel Club campaign is part of the National Curriculum and aims to help teach children to know how to interact safely with dogs and when around dogs. It includes elements such as understanding “dog language”, why a dog may bite; what to do and NOT do when around dogs; how to approach dogs; and what to do if a dog shows signs of aggression. Signed-up schools get a computer based interactive programme and a final assessment. Maybe together, practice in the home and school, we can reduce the 1159 hospital admissions in the 0 to 9 year age group caused by dog bites or strikes, from March 2014 to February 2015. More information here: www.safetyarounddogs.org.uk Please remember our amazing postal delivery workers – the Post Office has recently issued a safety notice appeal, especially relevant for the summer holidays, when dogs are outside more often – and so are running free, when the postman or post-lady arrives at the property. You as an owner, are legally responsible all the way from the front gate, to the letter box now. Even outside the gate, on the street, even cats at the door or geese in the garden, postal workers can get attacked. It is in everyone’s interests that serious and disfiguring bites to hands, arms, legs and faces should NOT be allowed to happen; in any doubt, fit a good-sized post-box on the outside property wall or gate posts. Hwyl fawr – good bye!

Tips for a Fun Healthy Summer
Lifting Luggage – Top Tips to avoid holiday back pain blues
Open August 2nd & 16th
I’ve been getting some fantastic feedback from you all about my previous articles – thank you and please keep it coming! This month I thought I’d focus on the holiday season and specifically, how when we’re getting ready to go away we all tend to pack too much ‘just in case’. We then have to manhandle the newly stuffed suitcase to get it downstairs, into the car or taxi, out of it again, onto a trolley, and then onto the check in desk. That’s five times we have picked up that suitcase – and this usually when we are highly stressed, doing so quickly because there is a queue behind us and struggling with a trolley that often has a mind of its own – and all before we’ve even arrived! If you want to protect your back and prevent the pain and problems that might mar your holiday, then here are a few tips so that by the time you return from your holiday you feel in the pink – not blue! 1. Take your empty suitcase downstairs and pack it there. 2. When you pull the case if it is on wheels, always make sure that you lightly brace your abdomen and that you don’t twist while you do so. 3. Buy a suitcase with the biggest wheels – this reduces friction and makes the case easier to pull. 4. When you are grabbing the case off the carousel, again brace your abdomen, slightly bend your knees and use your hips to lower yourself to lift – just like a weightlifter – so you ‘spare’ your spine. If the carousel is dragging it away from you or you can’t lift your case cleanly, then instead of panicking and lifting awkwardly – leave it until it comes round again! 5. If you use the over-head lockers on a plane, don’t over extend or twist while you do so – brace and lean back using your hips and face the locker square on. 6. Be aware that the extra stuff we usually bring home makes the suitcase even heavier!! If you still manage to irritate your back on holiday – call Sue at the Rookery, she’ll help put the sunshine back into your life!

Fingers crossed we will have had some sunshine in Faringdon by now! The barbecue and all my cool summer tops seem to have cobwebs around them! I love cooking on the barbecue. In fact it is the one time John and myself seem to argue over the cooking. There is something incredibly liberating about standing outside and cooking. Being in the open air, cooking over fire. It's a kind of release from the real world I think. And I quite like to keep things simple when it comes to barbecuing. Marinate this and a glaze on that. Sometimes, just sometimes, it really over complicates things. I love putting great thick hunks of vegetables over the coals, or wrapping potatoes in foil to set over the rungs, eaten with a great block of salty butter and lots of black pepper. Pete at Pat Thomas Butchers do lovely barbecue packs or of course his sensational sausages, brilliant burgers and ravishing ribs. Take delicious chicken thigh fillets or just a good old chicken breast - cut into 3 lengthways - and coat with a little natural yogurt, garlic, lemon and freshly chopped coriander and grill until a little charred and the meat is firm. Or grill a 100% beef burger and finish off with grated cheese. Clamp the barbecue lid down to help melt the cheese. Then embellish with some of the lovely pickles we have in stock. One of these is from Ashton Keynes, who make fabulous pickled shallots or ale chutney or indeed pickled red cabbage. Take large field mushrooms and drench with rapeseed oil, then grill with the barbecue on both sides. Once juicy and tender, fill the cavity where the gills are with a cheese that melts easily like goats cheese or blue. Or perhaps a spoonful of cream cheese mixed with chopped summer herbs. Carry on grilling until the cheese starts to ooze! Which ever way you go about it, barbecuing is fun. It's social and it's delicious! And what better way than to end on, something sweet. Bananas are completely perfect for the barbecue. Keep the coals going or gas on low and place the bananas on to the grill rack directly. Turn the bananas every few minutes until the skin is black and soft. Then arm yourself with two pieces of cutlery, be it a knife and fork or spoon and fork. Just ease the skin open a little, just enough to pour in about a tablespoon of coconut cream and to push in 3-4 cubes of chocolate. If you want to, swap the coconut for some rum! Gently ease the skin back together then leave the bananas over the heat for a minute or so more. Serve with nothing more than a spoon to scoop out the gorgeous, steaming fruitiness. Astonishingly, the human body contains over 10 times more microbial cells (bacteria) than human cells, and the entire microbiome can account for up to 3% of total body mass. The microbiota which live in the gut play a role in the human immune system. Research has shown that the human microbiome may have a role in auto-immune diseases like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and even some cancers. A poor mix of microbes in the gut may also aggravate common obesity. Our gut microbes could go some way to explaining why one person can eat a certain meal and gain weight and another person eat the same meal and lose weight. We know that genetics play a part in our predisposition to gain weight but it generally accounts for a very small amount of your body fat percentage. Genetics is not usually the reason that some people are more overweight than others. Our internal interaction between our essential microbes and their ability to digest our food and keep us alive is proving more interesting as scientists examine our relationship with them. The diversity of our diet can have a massive effect on our gut health and consequent weight. One thing that all nutritionists agree on is that processed foods, junk food and sugar are to be avoided wherever possible. Eating more fruit and vegetables and good quality, fresh meats and fish is the way to improve health and weight balance. To counter the effects of drugs like antibiotics, which destroy our good gut bacteria as well as the bad bacteria, we can help our bodies rebuild the balance and variety of gut flora by taking good quality probiotics, eating traditional cheese, live yogurt and fermented foods like sauerkraut and pickles. These help increase the variety of healthy gut microbes. Differences in our individual gut microbes might explain why a low carb diet works for some and not others. One thing that becomes apparent when looking at the research done to date is that there seems to be a correlation between poor diet, (with a limited variety of healthy fresh foods being consumed), the variety of gut flora and a person’s health and weight. To regain the balance we really do have to vary our food and do some exercise, as this boosts our immune system and has a positive effect on our ability to digest foods. The more nutrients our bodies can get from the foods we eat the less likely you are going to be forever looking in the fridge for more. Thus satisfying not only the body but the effect all this has on the brain. Why not try to improve your health by increasing the diversity of foods you eat and most importantly by listening to your body. If you are not getting the results you want or the same results your friend is getting by doing the same thing then maybe it’s not for you, so try a different approach. We are all individuals and although there are certain principles that apply no one diet fits us all. Good luck. Richard
