Faringdon Business Breakfast Club "How do you describe the detached building at the bottom of the garden where one spends the working day trying to make a living. It is more than a mere shed, but it is less grand than an office - maybe it is a "Shoffice"?! How is it treated for tax purposes? This was one of the many questions that the Faringdon Business Breakfast Club reflected on before being entertained with a multi-media presentation from club member Sarah Benson of Perry Bishop & Chambers extolling the benefits and achievements of our local rotary organisations which are active across many age-groups and are delivering amazing projects worldwide. There was even a picture of our very own committee member, Paul Brame, puffing his way round the recent Buscot fun run, just one of the many fundraisers that the Faringdon Rotary help to facilitate. In August, FBBC will meet on Monday 4th at Sudbury House hotel and after everyone has introduced themselves there will be an opportunity for three 1-2-1 sessions with other members - it is always a popular meeting. Business Update Have you tried out the new Wifi in the town centre? Have you used the new Bybox facility in the Southampton Street car park? Have you popped into the re-incarnation of Faringdon’s hardware store, Davis DIY? There are many reasons to be in and around the town centre these days and we hope many of you will also enjoy the annual FollyFest festival over the weekend of 1st-3rd August. There will be plenty more reasons over the coming months and the Chamber of Commerce heard from our town team administrators who are busy working with various stakeholders to facilitate regular markets, following on from the recent success of Blackbird Day and Independent’s Day. They are also looking at a revamp of the Faringdon loyalty card to make it more attractive to participating businesses and cardholders. This will include regular offers and competitions. The latest initiative is a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Cotswold Wildlife Park. All you need to do is take a picture of a purchase you have made or someone who served you at any local independent business in Faringdon and either post it up on the Loyalty Card facebook page or e-mail it to faringdon.townteam@gmail.com before 20th August. One of those independent retailers is Karl Booth, who has opened a new hardware store in Faringdon. He has taken on the name of “Davis DIY” and the former owner, John Davis, was there for the grand opening on 19th July to give it his blessing. We wish Karl and his staff all the very best in his new venture.

Talk to the Vet!

Welcome to another month; beautiful weather, brief but heavy rain, and the roses and brambles have taken over the hedgerows as small apples and berries slowly grow and ripen. For some of us lucky enough, the air is full of summer scents buddleia, mock orange, honeysuckle and “lime” trees…the bees are busy everywhere and butterflies are emerging and hopefully will have a good breeding season. “Tree bumblebee branches out” headlines my Butterfly Conservation Trust e-News – this is one bee that I’ve never heard of before, and forgive me, I’m really excited, since this species is showing stronger resistance to UK parasitic diseases than native bumblebees! So, while many bee species are declining, Tree bumblebees are bucking the trend by branching out further across the UK. Originally from mainland Europe, the Tree bumblebee (Bombus hypnorum) was first seen in the UK in 2001 and is now found in most of England and Wales. It reached southern Scotland last year with the first recorded sighting in East Dunbartonshire in June 2013. New sightings this year show this distinctive species - with its reddish brown thorax, black abdomen and white tail - has now spread eastwards across Scotland into Edinburgh and East Lothian. BOVINE TB – always in the news and always a worry for the livestock-keeping farming community. A community where the industry has too many cases of fatal injury (38 in the 2012/2013 HSE report) or serious bodily injury (375 in the same period) across the whole sector - even more worrying if there’s a tradesman or farm worker completely on their own, in the yards or out in the fields and woodlands. These statistics include forestry workers, tree surgeons, horticultural workers and other agriculture-allied trades and activities. For the farming sector alone, 29 fatalities and 1 in 5 of all fatal injuries to ALL UK workers. The stats, at over 53% more than in the construction industry, confirms that farming is one of the most dangerous professions. The HSE also points out that the proportion of injuries actually being reported in agriculture is low, so the actual rate is likely to be much higher. The most common types of injuries seen in agriculture are a result of contact with moving machinery (such as unguarded or faultyguarded power take-off shafts, PTOs), injury from moving vehicles (including reversing) and farm livestock. So, back to TB – there is very strong indications that social science can contribute a great deal to the TB debate, where farmer and public attitudes have a significant impact on how disease control measures are implemented. If attitudes and behaviours are better understood, more common ground regarding biosecurity, disease surveillance and any controls on wildlife may be found. We are dealing with a social problem. It’s also been clearly demonstrated by the Cymorth TB Project in Wales that local veterinary surgeons, trusted by their client farmers, have a pivotal role in helping farmers to control bovine TB as well as other diseases. Vets will bridge the gap between policymakers and farmers as well as their non-farming clients. MISSION RABIES, in their next phase in and around Goa, Southern India, has achieved the neutering of 8000 dogs in 11 weeks but still picking up 2 to 3 proven-rabid dogs per week. But then, (BIG stats!) to date in 305 days, 97,536 dogs have been vaccinated against Rabies, total dogs neutered across the region 13,870 and 76,850 school children spoken to. The MR Team plan to visit 80 schools across the region to raise Mission Rabies awareness even more. So, the MR mission statement “ Across the World, 100 children die every day from Rabies and we’re going to change that” is truly becoming a reality. MR will be launching projects in other countries but despite UK business and personal donations, and those across the World, there is always the sticky question of raising money for future work. You may like to visit the MR website http://www.missionrabies.com and see if you can help. Thank you! Remember the e-petition to end non-stun slaughter and promote animal welfare?… It has received more than 10 000 signatures, allowing the relevant Government department to provided the following response: The Government encourages the highest standards of welfare at slaughter and would prefer to see all animals stunned before they are slaughtered for food….The Government is aware that there is public concern about meat from animals slaughtered in accordance with religious beliefs being sold to consumers who do not require their meat to be prepared in this way. The Government believes that consumers should have the necessary information available to them to make an informed choice about their food. We are awaiting the results of a European Commission study on method-of-slaughter labelling which is due this summer. We will look at possible options in light of that report. This e-petition remains open to signatures and will be considered for debate by the Backbench Business Committee should it pass the 100000 signature threshold. Sign this petition : https://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/64331/signature/new 70,630 signatures and rising as I write. Closing date: 28/04/2015 10:59. Thank you. Thank you also for your company this month, enjoy the summer – it will be Show-time very soon!

Sweetcorn!

Rob.. The Cheese Man! Best selection.. Best Cheese..

Sweet summer. There are some things that really should only be eaten in season from the UK. Fresh peas, strawberries, summer currants and of course, corn on the cob. I know it's a bit of a cliche but a barbecue just is not complete without juggling the heat on your fingertips of those yellow beauties with copious amounts of butter dribbling down your chin! Sweetcorn originates in America and still populates many of their recipes. Breads and cakes, creamed as a vegetable or indeed popcorn! It is maize but is a variety that contains more sugars. It is then harvested when the plant is much younger, therefore softer. But the sugars are retained giving that lovely sweet taste we all know and love. This young harvesting is called the milk stage and I think this is a logical name if you think of the milky substance that is produced when you cut a raw cob. Something that I find extraordinary is that when sweetcorn was canned, it used to always be packed with salt and sugar. Now fortunately, it's possible to buy it straight. A good sweetcorn really doesn't need much help along taste route. But a fresh sweetcorn holds many possibilities, on the cob or cooked in to a recipe. I love to make a dish called succotash which is a brilliant accompaniment to grilled meats, fish or sausages. Just soften onion and garlic until tender, add equal quantities of sweetcorn kernels and butter beans then pour in double cream to just cover. Season and then simmer for around 5 minutes. Finish with chopped parsley and coriander. On the barbecue they come in to their own. Wrap raw sweetcorn in foil with a knob of butter then cook over the coals for 20 minutes. Or char them after cooking in water. Just don't burn the roof of your mouth in the excitement. Often I speak with people who wouldn't think about using sweetcorn cut from a cob. It can be a messy but incredibly satisfying job shaving the kernels from the cob! And the taste is comparable to eating a pea from the pod. Why not try making a salsa, perfect to go with those tasty Pat Thomas burgers. And actually, if you have a sweetcorn left over from a barbecue, it's a great recipe to use up the remainders. Shave the kernels from 2 cooked sweetcorn. Finely chop 1/2 a red onion, a sweet red pepper and 1/2 finely chopped fat red chili. Mix everything together with the juice and zest of a lime, 3 tbsp chopped coriander and generous seasoning. Serve with your barbie and a glass of something chilled!

Dinosaurs, aliens and the shop that sells everything By Duncan Saunders Ghostly Publishing

Editors Choice!.. Local Talent, a very entertaining read.

Fantasy comes to Faringdon Dinosaurs, aliens and the shop that sells everything is a story like no other, though to many, it should seem quite familiar. In his first novel, local author, Duncan Saunders, has created a magical world full of the most fantastic surprises. When the novel’s hero, Gordon , takes his first job in a department store he thinks his time there will be quite mundane, but this soon turns out not to be the case. As well as everything you would possibly find in your local M&S, “Dr Melchior’s Emporium of Magnificence” sells a whole lot more, and yes, dinosaurs and aliens do feature on the annual stock take! As Gordon is introduced to every department he is thrown into the workings of each, sometimes literally, and comes up against some hair-raising adventures, as well as meeting a horde of the most unlikely customers. I had a chance to chat to the author to find out his inspiration and what he would like the reader to take from the book. This is your first novel, how did the idea come to you? Back in the early 1990’s, I used to work in Carters (now Budgens). It was there that I first had the idea for the book; stacking shelves gave me plenty of time to think and come up with ideas! While the characters are fictional, there are some similarities, and I hope my light hearted tribute to Carters shows the affection I have for those days. Certainly, it did feel like it sold everything, and I’m sure that had they been able to source dinosaur eggs, Carters would’ve sold them. The adventures in the book seem so exciting, yet so 'run-of the mill' - how did you get that balance? The mix is deliberate; the incredible seems so much more so if it is placed next to the everyday. To me, the idea of finding a dinosaur is amazing, but the idea that someone might be keeping dinosaurs behind a high wall just up the road, is even more amazing. Books where the mundane and magical exist side by side have always appealed to me. The balance is a key part of the story. To me the book reminds me of a Roald Dahl adventure, did these books influence you at all? I grew up reading Roald Dahl and still love his books. I was lucky enough to meet him when he was the guest of honour at an event in a little bookshop in Faringdon in the 1980’s. I remember him being very tall, folded up behind a little table very much like the BFG. He signed my tatty old copy of James and the Giant Peach. Any comparison to a master storyteller like him is extremely flattering and I can’t think that I deserve it! It is easy to place yourself in the countryside while reading the novel - where did you picture the shop when you were writing the book? Like Carters, it was in the middle of a town very much like Faringdon. I wanted to get the mix of technology and wildness, which is why there are several scenes set in very remote places. I suppose it’s a bit like the title; there’s the wildness of the dinosaurs mixed with the advanced technological prowess of the aliens. It all has to come together to make the story work. Who would you like your book to be aimed at? It’s aimed at me! I tend to write things I’d like to read, as that way there’s bound to be at least one person who enjoys reading it. More widely, I’d say it’s aimed at older children, and those who enjoy reading escapist fantasy novels. Several adults have told me how much they enjoyed it. I suppose, if you read the title and think that you might like it, you probably will. Have you found that dinosaur yet - and are Ankylosaurs your favourite type of dinosaur? Sadly not, though I’ll keep looking; and they are, although I like most types of dinosaur as long as they’re at a safe distance! I don’t think I’ll be able to get a real dinosaur for the book launch, but I’m hoping it’ll be exciting nevertheless!

Duncan is launching his book at an event in Faringdon on Saturday, August 9th at Folly Tower, between 1.00 and 3.00pm. Isla Whitton

Oxfordshire Befriending for Life (OxBEL) Volunteers who offer friendship and support. We could all use a friend who will listen and be there for us during challenging times. And this can be especially so if you are living with a serious illness and may not have long left to live. Some people in this situation say they find it impossible to “open up” to close family members because this would add to their distress. All too often, old friends suddenly drop away, become clumsy and unhelpful in their approach. Health professionals are fantastic but they may not have the time to sit and listen to what may really be worrying their patient, especially if such worries are not primarily medical ones. Or sometimes people just want to regain some normality and enjoy some social time where they just talk about ordinary, everyday things.

Such choice! One thing that I adore most about the world of wine is the simple fact that it offers an endless realm of choice. The variety of wines available commercially is massive. The expanse of aroma and flavour profiles, styles and variation from one region to the next dissolves the remotest inclination of boredom. One of life’s pleasures would have to be, the discovery of something new. When applied to wine, I always get a thrill out of a ‘new’ find. Have you ever heard of Picpoul de Pinet? According to the producer Gérard Bertrand (Languedoc Roussillon, Southern France), the region of Picpoul de Pinet is one of the earliest civilized places on earth and has been a wine making area for over 2000 years. The village of Pinet is situated near Thau where the noble grape known as Piquepoule was first thought to be grown and which in turn gave the name to the wine known today as Picpoul de Pinet – a wine produced from the limestone soils of the Mediterranean and the celebrated southern French sun. Piquepoul (aka) Picpoul de Pinet comes in three different berry colours – noir, gris and blanc. Its high acidity lends itself to being a perfect blending partner, adding freshness to Languedoc whites and it is permitted in the extensive blend of Chateauneuf du Pape. However, as a varietal, it shines in its home turf. The white wines are generally lemon scented, sometimes floral. They are crisp in acidity and finish dry, making them a great partner with a range of cuisines. Available locally: Gérard Bertrand Picpoul de Pinet 2013 £9.99 Den Boer Wines Citrus on the nose, with a hint of honeysuckle and peach. The palate delivers refreshing citrus flavours of grapefruit and limes, with subtle honeydew melon and lychees. The finish is dry and fresh. Best enjoyed young and served at 8°C with shell fish, grilled fish or Mediterranean salads.

Saturday 23rd August 2014, looks set to be the biggest to date. Shrivenham Rec will play host to the largest number of family attractions, retail stalls, car boot vendors and activities in the fete’s 35 year history. Dave Branscombe, Chairman of Shrivenham Fete Committee, explained: "We are very excited about this year’s Shrivenham Fete. Hopefully everyone passing through the village, as a result of the A420 traffic diversions, will also drop by to join us. We’ve got some great animal attractions including falconry, reptiles and working dog displays – alongside the familiar family attractions, fairground rides, retail stalls and car boot sales. “There will be a large selection of food and drink outlets this year, offering a broad range of choices; from Crepes and Churros to Falafel, Jerk Chicken, Indian cuisine and a hog roast! I’d like to encourage everyone to join us and to bring the whole family.” Shrivenham Village Fete commences at 13:00 on Saturday 23rd August at Shrivenham Recreation Ground. Entry to the fete is completely free and more information and a full list of attractions be found by visiting www.shrivenhamfete.co.uk or www.facebook.com/ShrivenhamVillageFete

Lets Talk about Whisky

0 0 0 1

One great option for enjoying whisky in summer is to use it in a cocktail and in recent times there has been a renewed interest in cocktails that has brought with it an appreciation of the versatility and complexity that whisky can bring to mixed drinks. Cocktail making equipment is becoming increasingly sophisticated but for the home cocktail maker the simple methods of build, stir or shake are more than adequate to produce some deliciously different drinks and, as Bruce and Enrico of Eaux de Vie recently demonstrated to us, it’s not difficult to create your own fabulous concoctions so here’s some recipes to have a go at. Blood & Sand One of my favourites packed full of flavour Take 20ml Great King Street Artists' Blend, 20ml Cherry Heering, 20ml Fresh Orange Juice & 15ml Akashi-tai Shiraume Umeshu (plum infused sake – amazingly rich and decadent!). Place all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice, shake, then strain into a glass. Squeeze oil from twist of orange peel over drink & place twist in drink. Manhattan Light and zingy, perfect for a hot summer’s evening Stir 50ml Nikka Coffey Grain, 20ml Sweet vermouth & 2 drops of Angostura Bitters in a jug with ice. Strain. Squeeze oil from twist of orange peel over drink & place twist in drink.

Swedish Martini If 007 was Swedish this is what he would drink… Stir 40ml Mackmyra Bruks Swedish Single Malt, 10ml Briottet Crème de Peche, 10ml Gutierrez Colosia Fino del Puerto & 1 drop of Orange Bitters in a jug with ice. Strain. Rub oil from twist of lemon peel round rim of glass. Place twist in drink. Top tips of the evening were: 1) Most cocktails can be prepared in advance, bottled and stored in the fridge. Ideal for parties or so that you have a refreshing drink available when you get in from work! 2) You don’t have to stick exactly to the letter of the recipe. Experiment and make it to your own taste. Remember, whisky doesn’t always have to be a straight single malt, when mixed with the right ingredients the whole can be better than the sum of the parts – so go shake those shakers!

Top 10 Reasons to Exercise Regularly (Besides losing weight)

Happiness: Regular exercise can actually improve your life in so many ways. Making a habit of doing some sort of regular controlled movement can have a massive effect on your body and mind. As we can see in the points to follow if you can affect your longevity, general health, sex life, energy levels, sleep, stress levels, confidence, posture and memory, you are surely more likely to be happier. Longer life: Regular physical exercise increases your life expectancy and those leading an active lifestyle are likely to live a longer more active life. Health – Less sickness: People who exercise regularly are about half as likely to catch the common cold. Improved sex life: Exercise can increase arousal and improve circulation; it also helps if you are feeling better about your body – say no more! More energy: Regular exercise can actually make you feel more energized throughout the day. A midday workout can be a great pickme-up and can lead you to feel more energetic and productive at work. Better sleep: As long as it isn’t too close to bedtime, exercise can help with sleep as you will probably be less stressed and more tired, therefore ready for bed and sleep. Reduced stress: Studies have shown that exercise is a great way to combat stress. Endorphins produced through exercising are natural stress-fighters. It also takes your mind off the things that stress you. You can also take your stress out on the punch bag in the gym! Boost confidence: Exercise can improve your appearance which in turn can improve your confidence. Exercise can also be a social event too, especially if you work out at the gym. Even putting in the effort to exercise will make you feel better as it will stimulate various chemicals in the body thus improving mood. Improved posture: Good posture is important. Regularly exercising your core muscles, abs, back, and other muscles can be very helpful in fixing your posture, both sitting and standing. Improved memory: When you exercise, you increase your blood flow throughout the body, including the brain. Your brain gets more oxygen. There are longer term effects in response to the exercise. It has been shown that our cognitive function improves too. 10 good reasons to get moving – so why not start now.

We will tell you why they mean so much to us and then perform them. At The Bobbin in Faringdon, an amazing, listed, historic building and former haberdasher’s shop, still with interior intact and lovely glass roof - worth coming just to admire the interior. On this occasion you also get a feast of poetry and music as well as a piece of delicious cake and a cup of tea or coffee. The second half consists of contributions from the audience and some more from us depending on how shy you are feeling. We are raising money for a local charity. BATHROOM SHOWROOM Open to the Public & Trade

For your dream bathroom Let us help!… T:01367 242666 faringdon@activeplumbingsupplies.co.uk Unit A&B, Park Road, Faringdon, SN7 7DS

Are you feeling run down and on top of that, you feel a cold sore coming on?… This familiar tingling on the lip, accompanied sometimes by swollen lymph glands under the lower jaw or on the neck. Something we certainly can do without. Intense sunshine or even a sip from an unclean glass (revulsion and disgust can incapacitate the immune system) can trigger them, or an existing infection somewhere in the body. Infections or inflammations require our immune systems’ full attention – thus depriving it of its abilities to fight other invaders. Therefore, the Herpes Virus has an easy time. Stress can also facilitate the outbreak of the unwanted blisters – although the warm weather and sunshine are often associated with relaxation, many of us are planning their well-deserved summer holidays somewhere nice. However, before we finally can embark on the journey, our nerves are on edge: unfinished chores, suitcases to pack, wrong or cancelled travelling timetables or a missed bus to the airport can inhibit mental and physical immune defence. For some of us, even thinking out it can affect the immune system in a negative way. Diet sometimes plays an important role – the amino acid Arginine aids the reproduction and growth of the Herpes Virus. Foods high in Arginine are chocolate, carob, nuts, wheat, meat, dairy, gelatine, meat (mainly chicken, beef and pork) and coconut. Coffee can also increase the flare-up of cold sores. Do you suffer from regular outbreaks of cold sores and tend to bite your fingernails? In that case, you might have a calcium deficiency. Research has shown that those who regularly suffer from cold sores are low in Vitamin B12. So, adding 250 mcg of Vitamin B12 as a daily dosage – preferably in a good Vitamin-B-Complex, together with Folic Acid – can prevent the onset of the sores. Dabbing a bit of toothpaste on the spot (preferably over night) and let it dry in can be an effective first aid. Some sufferers swear by applying a drop of their urine – but this is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea. Propolis, one of Nature’s antiseptics – applied up to 5 times a day, can reduce healing time and pain intensity, especially when applied at the first tingle. When you are prone to cold sores, boosting the immune system is necessary. Lots of vitamins and a healthy diet will help. Additionally, a good Echinacea remedy will help the immune defence. Hypericum – better known as St. John’s Wort – can help to combat the viral infection, e.g. the Herpes Simplex Virus which is responsible for cold sores, and general nerve pain. It can also help to relax and lift you up when you are feeling low. Hypericum, however, may interfere with certain other medication, so please consult your GP or pharmacist before using it. The Herpes virus attaches itself to the top end of the nerves and can lie dormant in the body for a long time. As mentioned above, it can be triggered by a number of factors: Stress, fever, menstruation, drugs, alcohol and nicotine, to name a few. Spagyric Medicine a natural method of health care based on medicinal plants offers very effective remedies which can eliminate the virus active or dormant for good. Beat the blister!
