What a lovely Lad Josh!

This amazing young man did something wonderful yesterday, that made us proud to call him our son.

At half time he caught one of the shirts thrown into the crowd! There was a group of disabled lads in front of us, all of varying disabilities. Josh decided to give one of them the shirt he caught. When we asked him why he did it, he said “the boy in the chair tried really hard to catch one but couldn't get under it like I can and that's not his fault�. Josh's kindness stunned not just us his parents but the carers of the young man he gave the shirt to couldn't believe it! Well done Josh, it makes us so proud of the young man you are fast becoming.

Business Update So another year is drawing to a close and what an eventful year 2016 has been for our business community. It opened with Geo-4D winning an award for innovation and their success has continued throughout the year; they have expanded and moved to larger premises in the town to accommodate the demand for their product. There are many other success stories out there too numerous to mention and there are plenty of businesses capitalising on what Faringdon has to offer.

The markets continue to be an integral part of life in our town. The monthly Saturday markets have built on last year's successes with regular stall holders and themed additions that get other groups and community members involved, all adding to the uniqueness of our town.

We have had local and national referendums this year which will deeply influence our lives in the future; the result of the plebiscite on the Faringdon Neighbourhood Plan was not available at the time of going to press, but has generated a lot of lively debate. Then there was the "Brexit" vote, the outcomes of which will play out over time. This has already produced a few winners and losers who deal overseas and were affected by the dramatic change in exchange rates.

The Christmas Lights switch on is in the Market Place at 5pm on Saturday 3rd December with events starting from 1pm and the Christmas Market is on Saturday 17th December.

0 0 0 1 I always find that those last minute stocking fillers or ‘Secret Santa’ presents can be the most difficult to buy but for the whisky lovers in your life then we’ve got some great gifts that fit this category, and at prices to suit most pockets.

Normal rules apply i.e. avoid peaty whiskies unless you know the intended recipient enjoys them and if you need some guidance give us a call or pop in and see us.

Perennial favourites for gift giving are the 20cl and 35cl size bottles. These give whisky lovers an excellent opportunity to sample drams from distilleries both large and small to see if the style of whisky is to their taste, or to try a different version of their usual favourite. From the smooth and refined Edradour 10 year old to the ‘knock your socks off’ (in a good way!) Glenfarclas 105, there’s something for everyone. There’s also a chance to impress with bottles of premium whiskies that would normally break the budget at Christmas time but in these smaller bottles become a lot more affordable, so whether it’s a Glenfiddich 21 year old or the famous Johnnie Walker Blue giving one of these could make you the recipient’s favourite person! These may not be full sized bottles but there’s certainly enough to share so if you’re a fellow whisky lover try and be around when they open them…

Taster packs give even more chance for someone to explore different whiskies, particularly when they showcase a variety of drams. Springbank distillery is a great favourite of ours and the 3 expressions in their Campbeltown Malts gift pack represent the 3 different styles of whisky that they produce. These are the light, fruity Hazelburn, the full bodied, maritime Springbank, and the heavily peated Longrow – quality whiskies that have 100% of the production and maturation process carried out at the distillery.

Finally, why not tell them they’re ‘The One’ with an aptly named miniature from the Lakes Distillery, which contains a blend of whiskies from around the British Isles. An Honest Deceit

With the world in what seems like a constant state of upheaval at the moment, my reading this month has taken me into interesting places.

Just this past week I’ve revisited Patricia Highsmith’s pithy and unsettling cult classic Little Tales of Misogyny and am currently deeply involved in Broken Vows, Tom Bower’s masterful analysis of Tony Blair’s tenure at No. 10. Both of these are highly recommended.

Another book that has impressed me is An Honest Deceit by Guy Mankowski.

Released by independent publishing house Urbane Publications in October this year, the book opens with a line spoken by Marine, the treasured and highly spirited daughter of our protagonist Ben, a teacher: ‘Mum, where do fish go in the winter? They’re not in the sea any more. I’ve checked.’

At this point, I did not know what to expect from this book but Mankowski’s poetic prose and knack for hooking the reader from the get-go drove me on.

The prologue has Ben looking back wistfully about these lines spoken by his daughter so it’s natural to assume that something is going to happen to her within the coming chapters.

And it does.

A school trip goes very, very wrong, and what follows is a quest for truth on the part of Ben, his mysterious partner Juliette and their varied group of supporters.

One barrier to truth is Ben’s employer, the arrogant and obstructive headmaster Kraver who is so vividly written it gave me shivers of repulsion whenever he appeared.

Ben uses the celebrity he has gained from his school taking part in a reality television series in his battle to gain justice for his daughter. I was struck at this point by how skillfully Mankowski has brought together new spheres of exposure – reality television, Twitter – with, and into, a classic pageturning thriller structure.

Mankowski is a journalist, so it should come as no surprise that the research behind this book – exposing what it’s like for those who are brave enough to blow whistles on corruption - is thorough and pulls no punches.

This was my first book by this author, though a friend of mine had spoken highly of his previous book How I Left the National Grid. I’m heartened that there are brave writers like him, and even more heartened that there are independent publishers like Urbane discovering them.

Looking after your pets in the car.

A recent survey by Direct Line Pet Insurance found that despite Rule 57 in the Highway Code asking for suitable restraint. 18% of the veterinary surgeons asked have treated animals with injuries as a result of poor restraint. The injuries ranged from broken bones to bruising and minor injuries. Roaming free, on laps or lead restraints are unsafe. The safest methods of restraint for dogs are harnesses with seat belt restraint fittings, crates fixed in the luggage space, a secure dog guard separating the two spaces and by strong baskets secured by seat belts on the back seats. For cats, a towelling cover over the basket or crate adds a large degree of extra emotional security.

After a recent check-up at my Dentist’s, it was interesting to get results back from a survey taken in 2015, run by the University of Bristol Vet School about cats enrolled in the “Bristol Cats” study.

One of our cats is enrolled. The results show that there is a clear progressive increase in gingivitis as cats get older. By 4-5 years of age of cats in the survey, almost 50 % of cats are affected. If gingivitis is left untreated, it can develop into irreversible periodontitis. This involves the gums becoming retracted, red, swollen and thickened, with the ligaments that hold the teeth into their sockets becoming exposed. Severe gingivitis can cause signs of pain, excessive salivation - and often a smell - with difficulty eating.

Please do keep in touch with your veterinary practice and take advantage of nurse-run dental health clinics, whether your dog or your cat. Much useful practical advice on prevention will be given.

We are gearing ourselves up to move further up the RCVS Practice Standards scale of customer, staff and patient care. I have completed the NSPCC Child Protection certificate course and we are covered by Oxfordshire Employers Business Partnership codes of conduct for school student placements, in conjunction with reviews by the Oxfordshire CC under the Oxfordshire Work Experience Scheme. This covers both the Practice and the Cattery. I am developing contacts with school child safeguarding leads, as the NSPCC strapline says, “every childhood is worth fighting for”.

I’m continuing to read the Training Your Cat book. Current research is looking at the provision of food puzzles for cats – feeding for physical and emotional well-being. (Dantas et all, Journal Feline Med Surg 18(9) ). This is particularly important for the mental well-being and mental stimulation of house cats, outdoor cats may regularly experience this. In over 30 cases reviewed from their own practices, the authors found that food puzzles helped with obesity, impulsive frustration-based aggression and fear of new things and people. Commercial versions are available but the authors used old soft-drink bottles with kibble-sized holes in them for dry kibbles. Not all cats will readily take to them, but always should be kept in mind.

Thinking of outdoor cats, let’s move outside to find a few trees for the cats to climb and for us to enjoy the sunshine by sitting under them! Research has found that trees on UK farms will significantly reduce the loss of nutrients and valuable topsoil; wheat yields will rise towards 4% extra where shelter belts of trees are planted; the same trees will reduce losses of lambs in another field on the other side by 30%. That belt of trees planted on the same Welsh sheep farm reduces surface run off by two thirds and so reduces flood risks downstream. The varieties of trees planted will provide places for pollinating insects to hibernate, nest and feed.I hope that you’ve enjoyed this month’s ramblings.

Myself Gordon and my father George Russell, have been in forestry and farming all of our lives, Dad was using a chain saw, long before they were made (according to him)!

Spreading the Christmas Cheer!

Christmas is a time for celebration, with Christmas day being the highlight of the family’s culinary calendar for many.

However, planning and preparing for the occasion can be fraught with problems. Catering for sprout-hating children, the solo vegetarian and an uncle who would prefer roast beef can be a nightmare; getting the wines right is not straightforward either!

Such a special occasion deserves special wines: Champagne is virtually a necessity, yet the type of trimmings, as well as individual tastes, need to be considered when it comes to choosing what to serve alongside the turkey or goose.

Here’s a few tips to help steer you in the right direction: Ÿ Match the weight of both the food and wine. Fullbodied wines complement rich and heavy foods. Ÿ Balance the flavour intensity of both (full-flavours like Sauvignon Blanc and asparagus) and also consider the wine’s fruit characteristics (the raspberry flavours in Pinot Noir complement duck the same way a delicious fruit sauce would). Ÿ Match the acidity in wine and food. High-acid wines complement fatty foods the same way lemon cuts through the greasiness of smoked salmon. Ÿ The greater the texture a food has (fatty food like duck, chewy like steak) the more tannin the wine should have for counter balance. Ÿ Salt is not found in wine but does clash with tannic wines, so this pairing should be avoided. Ÿ Always remember to serve a wine with greater sweetness than the food. Sweetness in wine also acts as a foil to rich foods (Sauternes and foie gras is a classic example) Here’s a sample menu – perhaps worthy of a trial run prior to the big day?

December is a true time that the nation wears it's celebration shoes. Really, it all centres around Christmas.

Dinner parties, buying gifts, visiting, stockings and much more. The amazing colours, smells and textures of winter.

Warming and comforting, all rolled into one holiday season designed to bring fun, deliciousness and happiness.

It's a lovely thing to eat foods that you wouldn't do ordinarily.

We feel we can really spoil ourselves at Christmas. Why not?

We work hard and in turn, deserve all the luxury we can afford ourselves. People seem to eat rather more food, than at any other time of the year! I always find it rather extraordinary how much people eat. Well hey, it's Christmas!

Often celebration foods are really rather heavy, sugary, iced fruit cakes, rich mince pies, thick cream, fatty roasties, cheeses. It's rather nice to counteract with something a little lighter. Fresh fruits in the form of sweet Satsuma’s or tart pomegranate, plump for a Christmassy sorbet or perhaps a lighter fruit cake.

Christmas pudding can be rather heavy after a big turkey luncheon. In our house, we reserve the Christmas pudding for later on Christmas Day whilst sitting in front of the fire, accompanied by the obligatory spoonfuls of cream or brandy butter. Then to beautifully end lunch we have something lighter which incorporates those lovely flavours, that capture the moment. A tart of boozy fruits but set in a little pastry case in amongst some lemony cream cheese, or poached fruits infused with cinnamon and star anise. To make proceedings ultra special I love making a jelly. With prosecco or cava. So very easy and it keeps the bubbles and looks stunning served in a champagne flute. Just remember to make sure you have iced teaspoons to eat it! Actually, you can make a jelly with pretty much any drink you love, even down to some simple apple juice or coffee. Or elder flower and lemon perhaps, diluted with lemonade to give that gorgeous sparkle.

To make the jelly, take 4 leaves gelatine. Soak it in cold water, just enough to cover. You don't need to measure it. Next, warm up 150ml elder flower cordial along with 25g caster sugar, once hot, take off of the heat. Bring the gelatine out of the water, squeezing a little to get rid of excess water, then drop in to the hot cordial, swirl the pan to dissolve, let it cool a little then stir gently together with 450ml prosecco or cava, or champagne if you fancy it, it will foam a little.

Gently pour into 6-8 glasses - depending on the size of them.

Then if you like, you can drop in some berries - out of season I know but beautiful! If you are somewhere you can get hold of a little edible gold leaf, it will look spectacular. Then leave the jelly to set.

Serve with a little softly whipped cream if you feel like it, if not, just indulge in the sparkles!

Weight Loss: How to get through the Christmas Party Season Is Christmas going to scupper your weight loss goal?

The festive season is a time when we over-indulge on food and drink. Which can be tricky if you’re trying to lose weight! You can avoid making January a difficult month to get back to where you were by behaving differently over the Christmas period.

Stepping on the scales in 2017 to discover you have piled on the pounds can be very upsetting and de-motivating. So, take some simple steps to prevent disappointment.

1. Avoid stocking up with party foods to early.

The longer those Christmas foods sit in the cupboards at home the more chance that you’ll tuck in early – it’s too tempting! Try to stock up closer to the actual day or get your Christmas food planned and ordered but not delivered until a few days before you need it. Once delivered put it somewhere out of sight so you don’t have to look at it every day.

2. Think quality.

It’s better to eat quality food products, even if it means buying less, than a lot of poor-quality food. Quality over quantity. If you are going to go crazy over Christmas, then choose the best you can afford and savour the experience rather than buy the lower quality more processed food that will leave you craving more.

3. Avoid those Christmas special offers.

Most Christmas special offers are designed to encourage you to buy more. Do you really need three boxes of mince pies when you only meant to buy one? It’s hard to turn down a 3 for 2 offer but it will be even harder to resist eating all three! Do you really need six bottles of Prosecco just because you get 25% off?

Maybe, but they will tempt you until you have finished them!

4. Eat before you party.

The combination of hunger and alcohol will sabotage your resolve. If you have eaten even a small healthy snack before going out you will probably end up consuming fewer calories than you would do on an empty stomach. Avoid turning up hungry.

5. Treat yourself responsibly.

Before going out to your company Christmas dinner decide what food you are going to eat and stick to it. I have found that my clients who know before the event what they are going to eat always do better and tend to stick to the plan. You can still enjoy yourself especially if you are prepared. You are more likely to be disappointed if you come home after eating too much and not sticking to your plan. It may be easier to say you will start again after Christmas, but this makes the task much more difficult and less likely to happen.

6. If it all goes horribly wrong!

Remember, if you have not applied any of the above techniques and the pounds have piled on, you can still recover the situation by ‘drawing a line in the sand’ and moving on. Constantly beating yourself up about past mistakes will get you nowhere.

Look forward and work hard on making improvements. Yes, it will be harder now, but not impossible. If you are determined enough and with good support around you, results will come.

The setbacks can be temporary if you are committed.

I know some of you will enjoy Christmas and still get great results. So well done if that is you.

It’s better to not put the weight on in the first place than to have to lose it afterwards!

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club It was a relatively quiet meeting this month as there were a few regulars (including the author!) who were not available for one reason or another. However we did have a new member attend, and welcomed Toni Ryder to the club and look forward to seeing her again.

In the absence of most of the management committee, we asked Jonathan Russell to be MC and he did a sterling job and might be a candidate for future events as well. The attendees were treated to an enlightening impromptu talk

by Verity Manners about her having recently passed her social media learner test and was now starting to understand how to use the techniques properly, using the analogy of a learner driver having passed the driving test and now having to absorb what actually happens on the road.

She was now familiar with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram usage. Toni Ryder, having emigrated to UK 25 years ago from New York, added her insights into how she used social marketing for her online flower and bouquet business.

We are all very much looking forward to our Christmas meeting on 5th December when we will all be tested on our Yuletide knowledge through Jonathan Russell’s infamous Christmas Quiz.
