Business Update So Christmas is nearly here again and another year has flashed by. Much has changed, but a lot has stayed the same. We have seen the opening of the Faringdon Park retail development and this looks set to expand in 2018. There have been many new businesses opening their doors in our town and others have moved on to pastures new. The town is expanding as the various housing schemes move on apace. What do you think of the changes? Certainly, for some it has been a challenging time, but others have seen opportunities and we are aware that there are plenty of enquiries from SMEs who see Faringdon as a great place to set up and do business. Who will we see expanding or arriving in 2018? For sure, there is plenty of help and support for them in the Vale of White Horse and your local Chamber of Commerce will shortly be re-launching their website which will help to guide current and new business to the wealth of support available, be it mentoring, advice or financial grants and subsidies. Let us tell you about the “FAB accelerator”, which is being promoted by Vale4Business. This is a three month programme for ambitious entrepreneurs and start-ups and has had tremendous success so far - 34 FABS have completed the course to date, 18 are now trading, 4 received funding and 2 are competition winners! If you want to be part of that success, the next programme starts on January 15th and the application deadline is December 13th. For more information, go to the Vale4Business website. Talking of winning competitions, don’t forget the Fairford and Lechlade Business Awards. The categories, entry forms and rules are now available at www.flbc.org.uk. Further advice and support can be sought from the Chamber of Commerce or the Faringdon Business Group. We at the Faringdon Chamber of Commerce would like to wish all readers a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

0 0 0 1 Whisky lends itself to being used in various ways over the festive period, from an aperitif to drinks that accompany nibbles right through to your postprandial digestif there’s a dram to fit all occasions. If, like us, you like to start the day with a celebratory breakfast then a champagne cocktail is the way to go. A good blend works well for this, such as Chivas Regal, and you just place a sugar cube in the bottom of the glass, pour a few drops of Angostura bitters on, add a measure of whisky and top up with champagne. Perfect with Scottish peat smoked salmon and scrambled egg. Moving on to those pre-lunch or dinner drinks, another cocktail is in order but this time make it a Manhattan. Reputedly created for a party held in Manhattan by Winston Churchill’s mother, this looks lovely served in a Martini glass with a Maraschino cherry. Consisting of just three ingredients – whisk(e)y, sweet vermouth and a splash of bitters - this simple cocktail is ideal when you’ve got a houseful of people. The usual proportions are 2 parts whisk(e)y to 1 part sweet vermouth but this can be varied to taste. Historically, rye whiskey was the base for a Manhattan and will give bite and spiciness to it but for a smoother, sweeter cocktail bourbon or Japanese whisky can be substituted. As for the bitters, angostura or orange work equally well. After dinner it’s time to kick back and relax so what you need is a deep and contemplative dram that will reward the time spent in letting the whisky open up so that you can unwrap all of its complex flavours and aromas. Always in our personal top ten for this would be the GlenDronach 18 year old, which with its rich fruit cake flavours combined with citrus and spice is perfect for this time of year, and it has a richness and depth that just goes on and on. Also on our list would be two more whiskies that have a proportion of sherry maturation. Firstly, the oily, fruity, sweet and slightly smokey Springbank 18 year old that lingers beautifully on the palate. Secondly, if you like your whisky with a good dose of peat, the Pedro Ximenez cask finish Lagavulin Distiller’s Edition is always sublime and is ideal after dinner, bringing together as it does chocolate, cigar box and coffee flavours! Finally, for those ‘in-between’ moments when you are snacking in front of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ (yet again…) don’t forget that a square or two of good quality dark chocolate is a match made in heaven with most whiskies, or how about that old favourite of some shortbread and lemon curd paired with a smoky whisky of your choice – bliss! Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year . Sláinte! Fran Thomas

What is Gazumping? Before we explain what gazumping is, we are reminded of an advertising campaign back in the late 1980’s for a national estate agency featuring a hot air balloon which had “GZUMP” as its serial number! We have no idea if this was deliberate or just an unhappy marketing executive but it did make gazumping a hot topic during the manic property markets towards the end of the last century. So what is gazumping? Dictionary.com define it as being, “...to cheat (a house buyer) by raising the price, at the time a contract is to be signed, over the amount originally agreed upon…” There is a secondary meaning of “...to swindle…”. Either way, you get the idea that it is not something particularly good. Gazumph is a Yiddish word that seems to date back to the 1920’s and originally meant to overcharge which would account for why it has been associated to the increase of a sale price. Its increase in use is certainly prevalent from the 1960’s onwards and today is unfortunately synonymous with estate agents. When the seller accepts an offer on their property, the buyer will usually not yet have commissioned a building survey or solicitor. The offer is made "subject to contract" and until written contracts are exchanged either party can pull out at any time. It may take two or three months for all the necessary formalities to be completed, so if the seller is tempted by a higher offer during this period it leaves the

buyer disappointed and potentially out-of-pocket. Asking price has no impact on whether a property has been "gazumped". It is the act of accepting an offer over a previous offer that is subsequently known as gazumping. When property prices are falling the practice of gazumping is rare. The term “gazundering” has been coined for the opposite practice whereby the buyer waits until everybody is poised to exchange contracts before lowering the offer on the property, threatening the collapse of a whole chain of house sales waiting for the deal to go through. “Gazanging” describes a similar situation, where a seller pulls out of a sale entirely, expecting to get a better asking price or offer once the market improves. Whilst gazumping in England and Wales does happen, Scottish law makes the problem of gazumping a rarity in Scotland. The Scot’s system of conveyancing, the buyer either has to obtain a survey prior to making a bid to the seller's solicitor or make an offer "subject to survey". Sellers normally set a closing date for written offers, then provide written acceptance of the chosen bid. The agreement becomes binding when a seller's solicitor delivers a signed written acceptance of a buyer's offer. Here at Waymark, we obviously dislike the act , or indeed the threat of gazumping and its various alternatives and unless there has been a structural or legal issue that fundamentally changes what is being bought or sold, the price agreed should be the price that contracts exchange at.

December Ramblings!

| The Advertiser | page 9 |

"Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle, a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl. And the anticipation nurtures our dream." Barbara Winkler Hello and welcome to the first official month of the winter yet to arrive. A season of wind-cherried noses, as Dylan Thomas has written in his story of a Child’s Christmas in Wales. More later! But, a season, as the quote above shows, that has such promise. The winter migrants are here, the hawthorn berries and crab apples are being eaten with relish by my sheep, who apologise to the redwings, fieldfare's and our own thrushes and blackbirds who share the hedge line, the apples are also very attractive to our dogs! Our veterinary profession is acutely aware of the need to build in extra time and resources to meet variable daily consultation demands, we all work as a highly-integrated team to share the never-routine and always stimulating workload. There are many times when we know ahead that extra time is likely to be needed, then we offer to make that appointment time unlimited and more private, if appropriate, by placing it at the end of the appointment session. Typically, here I should be discussing enhanced pet care at Christmas regarding potential poisoning, with grapes and all dry vine fruit products; with chocolate; with the artificial sweetener, xylitol, in chewing gum and in some bakery products; with onions and garlic, perhaps peanuts and macadamia nuts; with mouldy food including bread and waste overripe cheese and blue cheese. For our pets, one classic form of food poisoning which includes significant neurological signs is “bin diving” black bag scavenging. Hopefully, we are all using our green caddy bins for waste food? But that’s enough for now, as it very clear that there are many potentially harmful substances that will be a bigger problem for cats and dogs around Christmas time. Most, if not all, veterinary practices are consulted about and treat many cases involving such substances. Always ask for advice and give your Practice the opportunity to act swiftly, ideally within less than 2 hours, if it’s a substance that can be taken out of the body/stomach by induced vomiting. Not a nice thought, sorry, but a practical point! So, we feel that’s it’s very important to be informed, take precautions, grow virtual eyes in the back of your head and keep your pets safe and of course enjoy yourselves at this time with your pets. For those of you who have lost a companion, Christmas can be a very lonely and emotional time for your family, remember your veterinary practice is always here to support you, at this difficult time. If my Editor allows, here’s that short extract from Dylan Thomas, as promised! I’ll leave you here, have a wonderful, peaceful Christmas time and a healthy New Year to follow, see you in 2018! Thank you. A Child's Christmas in Wales (extract) by Dylan Thomas, read by the Author first in 1952. Years and years ago, when I was a boy, when there were wolves in Wales, and birds the colour of red-flannel petticoats whisked past the harp-shaped hills, when we sang and wallowed all night and day in caves that smelt like Sunday afternoons in damp front farmhouse parlours, and we chased, with the jawbones of deacons, the English and the bears, before the motor car, before the wheel, before the duchess-faced horse, when we rode the daft and happy hills bareback, it snowed and it snowed. But here a small boy says: “It snowed last year, too. I made a snowman and my brother knocked it down and I knocked my brother down and then we had tea.” “But that was not the same snow,” I say. “Our snow was not only shaken from white wash buckets down the sky, it came shawling out of the ground and swam and drifted out of the arms and hands and bodies of the trees; snow grew overnight on the roofs of the houses like a pure and grandfather moss, minutely-ivied the walls and settled on the postman, opening the gate, like a dumb, numb thunder-storm of white, torn Christmas cards." “Were there postmen then, too?” “With sprinkling eyes and wind-cherried noses, on spread, frozen feet they crunched up to the doors and mittened on them manfully. But all that the children could hear was a ringing of bells.” Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

Books I Loved Claire Meadows Christmas being fast upon us, I thought it would be a great idea to do a round-up of the books that I loved this year. I’ve not only selected books that have been published this year, but books that have made an impact on me and enhanced my life during the course of 2017. I hope that you find your new favourite amongst these. If you have suggestions for books you’d like me to review in 2018 please email me at claire@afternyne.com Perhaps your favourite will become one of my favourites.

The Classic It’s rather shameful that I’m only coming to Donna Tartt’s The Secret History for the first time in its anniversary year. Twenty-five years old, and a book that gives its fans a far away look in their eye, The Secret History tells the tale of a group of privileged college students in New England who conspire to dispose of their boorish classmate. Tartt is a mistress in the art of manipulating the emotions of her reader, and her prose are as rich and as sumptuous as the lives of her characters. It’s a powerful read, and well deserves its plaudits.

The True Crime Thriller I came to Catching a Serial Killer, a true account of the mission to catch murderer Christopher Halliwell, in the knowledge that it was not only promised a well-informed version of events, but it faithfully captured a series of murders that happened near our very locale. Halliwell murdered Sian O’Callaghan after she had enjoyed a night out in Swindon, using his position as a taxi driver as cover. The book is written by Stephen Fulcher who led the investigation into Halliwell’s actions, and he not only exposes what it’s like to submerge yourself in the mind of a killer, but the workings of the police hierarchy.

Politics Book of the Year Hillary Clinton’s What Happened takes us behind the scenes of the most scandalous and devastating American election in history. Reading this brought it home to me again what an awesome President Clinton would have made.

The Contemporary Novel I have so many to choose from, but one of my favourites was The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney. It’s an acutely observed study on dysfunctional families, following the travails of the Plumb family in New York City. The author has produced a warm, funny and intelligent novel that I’ve recommended to all of my friends. I also loved The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry and took a step back in time with Mary Wesley’s classic The Camomile Lawn.

How is the upcoming festive period going to affect your health and well being? Hooray Christmas is coming! Traditionally a time for celebration, relaxing, catching up with friends and relations, Christmas can be a brilliant time for most of us. However for some it might not be so positive. Increased stress, excessive alcohol consumption, over indulgence with rich food and sometimes simply loneliness can all be detrimental to our health. It can be a time where our normal behaviour and our daily routines take a bit of a hammering! Changes in diet and lack of exercise can lead to fatigue and a loss of motivation especially when it comes to thinking about our health and well being. Be mindful that stress can lead to our immune system being compromised and we can become susceptible to colds and viruses. The festive season can bring loneliness and isolation and this can lead to comfort eating junk food to help us through this emotional time. A lack of motivation and eating unhealthily can put more pressure on us when we get to January. Feeling under pressure from heavy marketing to start a New Year diet plan or to join a gym or a class can be the last thing we need if we are feeling rubbish about the way we look and have piled on the pounds. So why not be different this year? Yes, of course enjoy yourself and have fun, but moderate your indulgences to make it easier to feel your best going into 2018. Think of others too, especially when buying presents. Try buying gifts which help your friends and family get fit or healthy. You don’t have to spend much but buy quality over quantity. It doesn’t have to be all about chocolates and alcohol, why not try making smoothies with organic cacao instead? Make yourself and others feel good by paying a visit to someone who might feel lonely or invite a friend for Christmas lunch. It has been said that on a typical Christmas day we can eat 6,000 calories – let’s make this year different! We need to take responsibility for our actions – ignore the alcohol talking to you and ‘giving you permission to overdo it’! Establish a line that you will not cross, and avoid the slippery slope which leaves you feeling overweight and full of selfloathing. There has to be a point where you say, ‘enough is enough’. This can be your weight, clothes size or how you feel. Try not to leave it to 2018 to make change. Start planning your actions now to make the process a little easier and less daunting. Feel good about the positive things you are doing and are going to continue to do. It doesn’t have to be complicated, go back to basics and make life work for you. Remember what you have accomplished this year, congratulate yourself and try to better it next year! Merry Christmas and may the New Year bring happiness and joy to you all. All the best, Rich. A chocolate and wine sort of Christmas. Christmas Festivities enable us to catch up with friends and family and celebrate with seasonal treats and delicacies. As well as this, we mark the occasion with the giving and receiving of gifts. My favourite gifts are without a doubt, ones that I can either eat or drink. This month, grocery shopping has taken a lot longer than it normally does as each supermarket in Faringdon has showcased its Christmas wares in a very enticing and ‘come and buy me’ manner. I’ve been busted on several occasions with an overflowing basket packed with Christmas treats when on the ‘carton of milk’ excursion. The creativity in this vast range of tempting seasonal products never ceases to amaze me – especially when it comes to the chocolate aisle. Not a massive sweet tooth, but still enjoying the occasional chocolate here and there, I made a discovery that would form my latest (as is technically termed as) ‘tasting analysis examination’. Aldi have created under their ‘Specially Selected’ banner, three bars of chocolate that are infused with flavours tailor made to accompany specific wines! (The thought process went something a bit like this: Hmmm, worth a try. Market research purposes of course. It must be done.) Which brings us up to the present moment. Chocolate and wine. Wine and chocolate. But not just any chocolate…….. Ederra Rioja Reserva 2012 La Rioja, Spain 13% abv available from Den Boer WAS £15.99 NOW £9.99 With Milk chocolate loaded with berries, maple and a touch of nutmeg from Aldi £2.49/80g The supple tannins of this wine integrate well with this chocolate. There is a great mixture of vanilla and spice - on the finish you are presented with a blast of freeze dried strawberries which marries up to the richness of the Rioja. Andeluna 1300 Malbec 2016 Mendoza, Argentina 14% abv available from Den Boer £12.49 With Dark chocolate infused with blueberries, blackberries and violets available from Aldi £2.49/80g The weight of the wine matches the chocolate quite well. The aromas and flavours complement each other, in particular the violets and blueberries. So, when you are stuck for something to do this Christmas, break into your chocolate and wine stash and conduct some taste experiments – you may be surprised at what you discover! Have a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year!

Rocking Advent! Painting Pebbles for a Cross-Community Christmas Countdown! 4 towns and 24 amazing local artists have combined to create rock art advent calendars this year. Paint brushes have been creating Christmas magic; glitter shakers have been twinkling and from the 1st December the advent pebbles will be hiding in all four locations. Fairford, Faringdon, Wantage and Bampton rock painting groups have invited six people to create four Christmas themed rocks each. One for each town. These have been shared so each group has a phenomenal rock art countdown to Christmas. Everyone can take part in this cross-community hide and seek. The festive pebbles can be followed on each of the town’s Facebook rock groups. Photos of the pebbles and their discoveries can be posted so everyone can share the joy. Every day celebrates a different Christmas theme and each town will have a special new rock to find. ‘Tis the season to be Rocking! Fairford, Faringdon, Wantage and Bampton Rocks!
