CHRISTINA HARRIS Has been painting for as long as she can remember. After attending Leeds Art College she followed a career in teaching until, deciding life is too short, gave this up in 2004 to paint full time. Christina uses paint to great effect to create the depth of fleece found in many breeds of sheep whilst the simplicity of a white or grey background serves to emphasise the lonely, uncompromising moods of a Yorkshire winter. She is represented at carefully selected galleries in the north of England and was featured in the Dales Diary television programme in 2008. Her work has travelled as far as Australia, Canada, France, USA, Poland, Austria and even Japan as well as being widely collected in the UK For more information info@christinaharris.co.uk www.christinaharris.co.uk

Hopefully, by now you’ll have got all the major Christmas present buying done and can concentrate on the type of presents I always enjoy looking for - the ‘fun’ extras that will go into big kids stockings (after all, you’re never too old for a Christmas stocking…) You don’t have to spend a fortune to bring a smile to a whisky lovers face so why not pop a little extra in along with the Satsuma and the chocolate gold coins? With so many whisky expressions available giving someone a tasting pack of 5cl miniatures can help them to narrow down their choices for future purchases. It can also demonstrate how the age of a whisky and the cask it’s matured in can produce varying flavours and aromas, even within whiskies from a single distillery. A great example of this is the Tomatin pack of three drams, as the whiskies not only differ in age but also the 12 and 18 year old are finished in Oloroso sherry casks whereas the 15 year old is solely matured in American oak casks. They are all delightful but each one is distinctly different. Or for a straight forward comparison of the influence of age, Arran Distilleries Gift Tin contains the 10, 12 and 14 year old versions of this, always popular whisky but the joker in the pack is the 12 year old, which is a cask strength expression (53.9%) that gives the chance to experience the whisky exactly as it came from the cask. We also find that 20cl taster packs are getting increasingly popular. Not only are the bottles big enough to share with friends so you can compare notes, but they’re also a good way of trying whiskies that are rather special, like the trio of 19 year olds in the Glenfiddich Age Of Discovery Collection that are finished in either Madeira, Bourbon or Red Wine casks and are a celebration of three different journeys that changed the world. Slightly easier on the gift givers purse would be the Glenfiddich Explorers Pack (which not only showcases their 12, 15 and 18 year old but also includes an elegant tasting glass) or one of the excellent Bowmore, Springbank or Classic Malt selection packs. Or if the stocking you want to fill isn’t very big then there’s a growing variety of single 20cl and 35cl bottles to suit all tastes - including some unusual single cask bottling's, a selection from both well known and more ‘boutique’ distillers, plus a variety from not just Scotland but also England, Ireland, Wales and America. Again, these provide more than just a taste without the outlay of buying a full size bottle. Whichever dram you choose to raise over the festive period, Ken and I wish you a very Happy Christmas and New Year. Sláinte!

*COME AND TRY OUR DELICIOUS NEW MENU*
The Woodman Inn It was a cold wet Wednesday evening to be venturing out in, but what a wonderful welcome, to walk into the Woodman at Fernham and have a beautifully blazing log fire to warm up to! At 7:00pm the Woodman was busy and buzzing! People at the bar grabbing an early drink after work, negotiating the price of horses to buy at a bargain!... That is the nice thing about being in the country, the mix of trades all under one roof, horse dealers, accountants, lawyers, our wonderful farmers, vets , builders and painters, this particular evening included a bus full of French servicemen and women, transported in from our local Shrivenham military base, by David Bryant, the Woodsman's new owner, courtesy of the Woodsman bus service, free pick up and drop off for over 8 people booking!... what a pleasure!..All coming together for a drink and good food in this local establishment! Seated quickly by the efficient staff, we were given a brand new menu to peruse! On opening the Chefs Specialities quickly struck me as the one to go for..... so Pan Fried Calamari and Chorizo it was. Served in a filo pastry case, with a mixed leaf salad and homemade mustard dressing, this was light, the calamari and chorizo cooked to perfection, and presented like a work of art. If that isn't to your fancy, there are another eight mouth watering appetisers to select from, you’re guaranteed to find one there for you! With a bottle of Merlot to enjoy, and I must say the wine selection is very reasonably priced as well as offering a great selection. We continued onto our main course. New on the menu and a must was the Beef Flat Ribs "Jacob's Ladder". This was a beautifully presented enormous rack of beef, mouth watering, served with large deep fried gourmet chips, onion rings and fresh peas, topped with garlic butter. Divine for all us meat lovers, crave no more for a good meat meal, you will be amply satisfied! The menu has a very good selection, another new dish is the Moroccan Lamb Tagine which is slow cooked lamb, infused with deep spices and fruits, served in a traditional tagine and accompanied with fragrant rice. The ladies at the next table had this and it smelt and looked delicious. For our desert ( yes I could fit it in!) Chocolate Coronet Pavlova. A coronet of dark chocolate filled with crunchy meringue and a dark chocolate ice cream, oozing with white chocolate sauce finished with a dusting of cocoa powder. My mouth is watering just writing about it now. The plate was embarrassingly clean and I finished my meal with a very large smile! The Woodman was recently taken over by David Bryant, who is doing a splendid job, he has introduced a new menu and has maintained the warmth and welcome of a very well established pub!
A Plethora of Ramblings!
| The Advertiser | page 7 |
Hello again and welcome
To the last of my ramblings for 2014. (Thank goodness, some of you say – I understand perfectly!!) So, December has quietly crept up on us, after a summer and autumn of extremes and new records. It’s been a busy year with its own issues that have come to a head, like the Ebola virus epidemic, and the year when Her Majesty’s forces have withdrawn from Afghanistan. Regarding the former, in the USA, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is developing an online resource to help veterinary surgeons advise their clients about Ebola virus and any implications it might have for companion animals. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association calls for testing and quarantine rather than euthanasia for pets belonging to positive Ebola-infected owners. The AVMA “open” resource link for everyone interested is: www.avma.org/KB/Resources/Reference/Pages/Ebola-virus.aspx May also I touch on the latter, especially as I’m writing with a background of the Tower of London and the sea of red cascading over a rampart and out of a window, to spread right round the Tower moat. Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red. All made by the 888,246 red ceramic poppies that will help to raise much needed funds for the six service charities associated with servicemen and women, many of whose worries and injuries may take a life-time of care and support. I wrote a little about that in my last article but at close family-times such as Christmas and birthdays, when losses are felt more deeply, I write again as a tribute to every serviceman and woman this Christmas time. Listening to a BBC World Service programme this morning, discussing the evolution of emergency trauma care, being given to injured service personnel, often very critically injured, their experience and sheer professionalism and initiative, create new work patterns and techniques “out in the field” that have saved more lives than ever before. These techniques and ways of managing patients have already come back into the UK and will be widely spread, to enhance medical and surgical practices all over the country. A legacy that is very special. Christmas time from a veterinary viewpoint, other than duty rota's and out of hours cover, brings its own medical and surgical challenges. We have already had eaten socks, balls of orange-flavoured chocolate, fruit cake, a whole bunch of grapes and chocolate-coated cocoa-flavoured biscuits. I can go on but will steer this discussion on to another worrying trend – where pets are at risk from human medicines. A recent survey of 100 veterinary surgeons by a well-known insurer Direct Line Pet Insurance, has found that the most common types of drugs ingested were paracetamol, ibuprofen, medicines specific for particular medical conditions, such as heart conditions and diabetes, contraceptive pills, sleeping tablets and antidepressants. At 28% of vets reporting deliberate dosing by owners, in the mistaken belief that it would help their pets, this left 72% or 243 cases of accidental poisoning. The warning “keep medicines out of the reach of children AND pets” is very appropriate. So too the Christmas tree chocolates and the presents underneath, the fruit bowls, meat bones and all those yummy fruit cakes! The insurer understandably stresses that owners should assume that ALL human medications are poisonous to pets and that owners should always seek advi ce for conditions from their veterinary practice. Appointments are always possible, should more than qualified, professional advice be needed. Please have a very safe and enjoyable Christmas; for those readers whom we have the pleasure of your custom, a sincere thank you from all of us here. For those professionals giving complementary services, such as hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, homeopathy and chiropractic, thank you for your time and skill. Thank you for your company. MERRY CHRISTMAS! With a Happy, safe and healthy New Year to follow.

Becky and Francesca, who specialises in alternative therapies including hot stone massage and reflexology, have both added to their training to offer their new spa treatments. We want to offer something extra to the people of Faringdon and give them something new. “Since we opened our customers have asked about the treatments we are now able to offer – we believe strongly in giving people what they want, and are happy to announce these innovations. In the New Year, we are also looking to offer spa body treatments to treat cellulite and stretch marks along with therapies such as chocolate wraps and aromatic scrubs. Becky also wants to offer a variety of spa pamper packages to her customers. “Since it is all about you, we want to make you feel special, tailoring a package to suit your needs, combining all the existing treatments on offer with our new services and therapies – whatever you want, we’ll do our utmost to meet your needs.” So if you haven’t had a chance to pamper yourself lately, or perhaps there is that special someone in your life that may deserve a treat, pop into VIP Hair and Beauty Studios on Station Road Faringdon, and discover what they have to offer. It's such a lovely time of year! The leaves are turning golden, the sun is low in the sky and the harvest has happened! Preserving is something that not many people seem to do nowadays. There are plenty of different ways of preserving, from freezing, to drying to making jam. In past times, preserving was essential as there were no supermarkets flying produce from all corners of the world to service our shopping trolley. So meats, vegetables, fruits and milk were all preserved somehow. For instance, making cheese or yogurt are ways of preserving milk. Christmas is fast approaching and actually, a little jar of something is a perfect present. There are countless recipes for chutney, jam and jellies and they are really pretty easy. Most chutneys start off the same way by cooking onion in vinegar with some spices. Jams are the same weight of fruit to sugar. So it's very easy to personalise a recipe. Trees have been laden with pears this year, unlike apples which have been less so. I thought we'd make something a little bit different that families will love, and for the festive season, go rather well with cheese or meat. Pickled Pears are on the menu today. 1 litre white wine vinegar 1 pinch saffron 10-12 peppercorns 3 sticks cinnamon 300g soft brown sugar 12 pears In a large pan, warm the vinegar, saffron, peppercorns and cinnamon. Add the sugar and let it dissolve, simmer for a few minutes. Peel the pears, then consider your jar size, leave the pears whole if you think they'll fit the jar or quarter them and core. Add the pears to the vinegar and cook for a few minutes. Warm the jars in the oven, at about 100째C for 5 minutes. Pack the pears in to the jars and pour over the vinegar to totally cover. Screw on the lids well and tightly and leave for a month to mature. Serve with cold meats and cheeses. Angela and Mike Barrett with Catherine Blaxhall NatWest Venus Awards (Oxfordshire 2014) Faringdon resident Catherine Blaxhall, Head of Carers Oxfordshire, lead for OXBEL and Flexible Care, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Oxfordshire Venus Awards at their annual ceremony on Friday 14th November. Dubbed the ‘Working Women’s Oscars’, the awards celebrate outstanding achievement and contribution across a range of categories. This is the first time the awards have come to Oxfordshire and Catherine will now go in to the National Final, in January 2015. Catherine has worked locally in social care for 25 years and has worked for Action for Carers (Oxfordshire) and Age UK Oxfordshire for the past three and half years. The evening was a magnificent success and the atmosphere electric as the 17 Venus Awards winners were announced. “I can’t remember a region embracing the Venus Awards as warmly as Oxfordshire”, said Tara Howard, Founder of the Venus Awards. “It was a memorable night and after 16 Awards ceremonies over 5 years, I think I can safely say this was absolutely one of the best ever. Also we raised over £1,500 for the local charity Headway, which was a Venus Awards fundraising record as well!” Thousands of nominations flooded in and attendance proved an all-time high at the Venus Journey Events over the last six months. The Awards Ceremony took place at the splendid Oxford Belfry Hotel. A delighted Catherine said ‘I feel incredibly proud to receive this award for the work I do and which I love. It is very humbling to be honored in this way’ Paul Cann CEO of Age UK Oxfordshire said ‘Nobody deserves such an award more than Catherine. We have been lucky enough to witness her dedication and drive across many of our services. Above all, her warmth and humanity inspires us all.‘

This year’s Christmas will be spent with Pedro Ximénez – not the person, the Spanish white grape variety! Pedro Ximénez is made as a sweet, rich, dark dessert sherry by drying the grapes under the hot Spanish sun that in turn concentrates the sweetness. Many may cringe at the word ‘sherry’, however this category of wine has moved swiftly into the twenty first century, presenting us with some of the most versatile wines bursting with a dynamic range of flavour profiles – and you don’t even have to get a blue rinse to enjoy them! The soil where the Pedro Ximénez grapes are grown in the Jerez region (southern Spain) is high in silica and calcic carbonate. It is deep and has good oxygen content, and produces grapes with high sugar levels. When the Pedro Ximénez grapes are harvested, they are left out in the sun to dry for at least two weeks. This concentrates the sugars through evaporation, turning them to raisins. A very sweet must is then obtained through pressing, which is fermented and then fortified to around 17%, using grape spirit of 96%. The wine is then aged in a Solera system made up of oak casks. The Solera (meaning ‘on the ground’ in Spanish) is an ageing process whereby barrels are stacked on top of one another and younger ‘sherry’ is added to aged sherry via a method of fractional blending. The top barrel is filled for each ageing interval allowing the oldest container to be partly tapped of its contents (the Solera level) producing a final product that is a mixture of wine aged 100% oxidatively (having exposure to the air). The last barrel that has been partly emptied is then topped up with the second oldest sherry and left to mature. This process continues along the line, from one barrel to the next as no barrel is ever drained. Wine produced from a solera does not have a vintage date as it is a blend of vintages from many years. As the Festive Holiday Season approaches and the daily routine winds down, the wait for Santa requires a ‘sipping tipple’ with substance….. El Candado Pedro Ximénex Jerez De La Frontera, Spain Available from Den Boer Wines £8.99/375ml bottle Deep mahogany in colour, with intense aromas of dried fruits, raisins, figs, and subtle notes of chocolate, vanilla and coffee. Rich, smooth and velvety on the palate, with great length and balance. A perfect match to mince pies or a cheese platter! PS.. Love the padlock – keeps out any sherry thieves!! Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Donna 01367 241169 / 07919 241881 Email: donnarogers@denboerwines.com www.denboerwines.com

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club FBBC November Brand value, corporate message and visual shortcuts were the buzzwords at the November meeting of the Faringdon Business Breakfast Club. Local PR consultant Caroline Scotter-Mainprize of CSM Communications opened our eyes to the dark arts of managing and promoting your brand. She also shattered a few common misconceptions such as the fact that many of the most recognisable brands in the world have never actually paid a penny on advertising. It was a thoroughly interesting insight from an expert in their field and got everyone thinking about their own brand identity.
Our December meeting on 1st will have a slightly different format, but is still at the same venue – The Sudbury House Hotel in London Street. Regular member, Jonathan Russell, will be setting us a Christmas themed quiz as well as the usual networking. FBBC is open to all and costs just £10 per meeting. If you are interested in coming, please visit the club’s website http://www.fbbc-networking.co.uk or reserve your place by

The Fastest Way to Lose Fat.
Fat loss does not have to be difficult. It does however involve making new choices over the food you eat and changes to how you spend some of your spare time. As it requires you to change some of the habits that you may have had for a while, it is best done as part of a community of people that will be able and willing to support you with your fat loss goals. Until you have decided that you are prepared to make those changes and commit to them with no excuses you are going to find it difficult to lose fat and maintain fat loss in the long term. THERE ARE NO SHORT CUTS TO LONG TERM FAT LOSS. One reason people do not get results is that they resist change and focus on what they have to GIVE UP rather than what they have to GAIN (or lose in the case of weight loss) There has to be commitment. Most people fail with fat loss due to not committing themselves fully. So what changes will you need to make? EAT REAL FOOD – The quality of the food you eat is extremely important. Think of it as fuel. It has to be the best quality fuel you can afford to give your body the nutrients it needs. EAT PROTEIN - Base all your meals around lean protein and non starchy vegetables that are high in natural fibre and nutrients. DRINK WATER - You will need plenty of it to flush all of the toxins from the excess fat you are getting ready to lose. FIX YOUR DIGESTION – For the best fat loss results fix your gut health. By doing this you will get more out of your food which will alleviate some of your cravings for sweet things. EXERCISE SMART - Every workout you do in the gym should train the full body and all three planes of motion. High intensity is the key; you must work as hard as you can each time you train. It is best to get advice with your exercise plan so that you can train safely and effectively and ensure you get the results you want in the time you have available. BE CONSISTENT – Do not expect miracles over night. If it has taken you many months or even years to become overweight and out of shape, with a life time of bad habits and fad diets, you’re not going to change shape over night. MOVE YOUR BODY – This doesn’t have to be just when you are training in the gym. If you are a novice when it comes to exercise just concentrate on moving more. REDUCE STRESS – This might be trickier for some people depending on what the stressor is in their life. The connection between stress and obesity cannot be overlooked - the stress chemical cortisol signals a metabolic shutdown that makes losing fat almost impossible. FOLLOW A PLAN - Set a path for yourself and be patient. Keep to one thing and avoid being distracted by fads that offer quick results - you will only end up having to start all over again at some time in the future. EAT CLEAN - EAT LEAN – EAT GREEN – TRAIN HARD LOSE FAT

Run in Red – A FarRunner’s First, by Matt Bragg There is not much to me in reality, running and the Military is pretty much my daily bread. Someone in the club once said to me that “your life is a training program”, which is understandable why those two worlds often meet. As I looked at my calendar for 9th November it left me feeling a little deflated, as I thought I was going to have to miss the Far Runners Sunday run meet at 9:30am due to Church and the town Remembrance Parade. It got me thinking that actually people should not have to make that decision and I hoped that if that decision had to be made they would always choose the latter. As I stood in the Market Square in the bursting sunshine and heard the words “When you go home, tell them of us and say: for your tomorrow we gave our today”, I thought back to the times on deployments when running would often be a release from reality, a reality that faces many of our Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen. With the Far Runners being such a friendly and approachable bunch, I thought of a way of combining the act of Remembrance and the Sunday run, so for those like me who wanted to conduct the 2 minute silence we had enough time to remove medals and don running trainers and conduct our customary Sunday running ritual. So ‘Run in Red’ was born. A simple concept of a 1 mile, 2 mile and a 4 mile run/walk for anyone that wanted to attend. It was promoted that wearing something red would also be our Far Runners act of Remembrance as the run route visited the town War Memorial at least 3 times (for all distances), and how fitting with this being the 100 year anniversary of the start of the first World War. I hope that "Run in Red" will stay with the Far Runners, even when my duties take me to pastures new. So if you remember seeing The Far Runners in Faringdon town, wearing red, you now know what it was all about. The Far Runners coined the concept “Run in Red”, we ran it here first! If you are interested in joining the FarRunners, we would love to see you. We are a sociable bunch and cater for ALL ages and abilities. We meet at the Old Town Hall at 6:30pm on a Tuesday and 7pm on a Thursday. We also meet at the Leisure Centre at 9:30am on Sundays. Our early morning group meets on a Thursday at 6am (again at the Old Town Hall).

WISHING YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS
I thought I would write to formalise the situation with Rachel's Weddings. All my customers have now been notified first out of courtesy before they see any advertising. Because the building where Rachel’s Weddings bridal shop is has been sold, the new owners have given me notice to leave by 31st December to run their own bicycle repair shop so I will be relocating as soon as possible. As you will imagine, this could take a few months as I do not want to panic and lease another, unless it is absolutely right for the business, so I will be working from home and in order to continue serving my customers, have set up a mobile service, so I will be coming to your own home for any appointments for alterations, dressmaking and dress cleaning. Once my work has been carried out, I will contact you and deliver the item back to you. Here is a copy of my business card for my mobile services so please keep this in a safe place and do not hesitate to contact me if you need to. I will also be operating a wedding gown hire service. If you should hear anyone needing this or any other of my services please kindly give them my details, as I would love to help them as I have helped you. There is a wedding fayre in The Brunel Centre in Swindon on 22nd January and I will be exhibiting upstairs – sale of gowns all at 50% off, so please spread the word. Lastly, I want to say thank you to all my past and present customers it has been an absolute pleasure to serve you all during these past 2 years. As you know my business has gone from strength to strength with a whopping 321 dresses sold! I am also very proud to have built up a very good reputation not only for my customer service and bridal sales but for my alteration and dressmaking services which is why I am continuing this in the meantime. Kindest regards Rachel Illsley
