Faringdon Business Breakfast Club We opened the New Year with a session called ‘why I love what I do’ where specifically we asked everyone to talk about what they enjoy about their work. It was great to see some familiar faces, who had not been able to come for a little while, amongst the hardy regulars. With two or three minutes available it is a great way to talk in a relaxed manner about our passion for our work. There is an illogical amount of pressure when we are frequently asked to give a 60second pitch so this activity is one of our favourites. Not surprisingly the room went very quiet when Jonathan Russell asked for volunteer to go first, but he quickly nominated a fellow accountant Lawrence Harrison. Over the course of the meeting several common themes emerged and none of them involved making a huge profit as the primary passion for our individual work. No one was going to turn away profit, but the driving themes that emerged were founded on solving problems for clients and adding value to their businesses. The themes were illustrated with some wonderful and varied examples of how solutions had been found and help had been received in tangible and non-tangible areas. A sample of some of the common benefits we heard about were: increased turnover; getting a good night’s sleep; establishing trust; productivity improvements; overcoming stress; and highlighting the benefits of technology and information systems. At our next meeting on 4 February 2019, we will hear from one of our members, Graham Dawson who will be asking the question ‘How effective are you as a Leader?’ www.fbbc-networking.co.uk contact@fbbc-networking.co.uk

Faringdon Bell Ringers In December the bells celebrated the joy of Christmas. We rang on the day but also we announced the coming of Christmas by ringing before the Midnight Communion on Christmas Eve. Really exciting climbing the tower stairs at 11 o’clock at night. English tower bells are the voice of the whole community, not only the church. All Saints is outside the town centre which means not many people can appreciate the beautiful tone of the eight bells. They are an octave in the key of E and considered one of the finest peals in the area. Visiting ringers are attracted to service ringing and practices and on 21st January a visiting band rang a quarter peal. The band is always changing. We lost Katharine our correspondent in December to Abingdon. Was it the grand tower with its ten bells or was it romance ? We can only guess. At the other end of the scale there are new recruits learning. It’d be good to reinstate the tradition of ringing in the New Year but we need some more youthful ringers. Now would be a good time to begin practicing. If you’re interested you are always welcome to visit our Sunday service ringing (9.45-10.30 am) or Monday practice (7.30-9.00 pm) at All Saints Church. Or you can contact us by emailing faringdonringers@gmail.com

is calling on residents, passionate about their community to stand in the local elections in 2019. What do councillors do? Councillors are the champions of their community and give residents a voice on the decisions the council makes. Becoming a councillor will allow you to make a real difference in your community by engaging with residents, local groups and businesses to find out their needs; making decisions on which services and projects the council should take forward; and getting involved locally to ensure the services are meeting your community’s needs. How long does it take? The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) Local Councillor Census Survey found that councillors put aside, on average, three hours a week for council work. This often includes attending meetings, engaging with residents and speaking on behalf of the council to other bodies. Can I stand? There are only a few rules to stand for election. You must be: • A British citizen, or a citizen of the Commonwealth, or the European Union • 18 years of age or older • Live in an area that is served by a local council How can I get involved? Contact Sally Thurston, Town Clerk at Faringdon Town Council office@faringdontowncouncil.gov.uk 01367 240281 to find out more.

Sadie Harrison & Slimming World

Faringdon United Church Wednesday 5.30pm and 7.30pm Thursday's 9.30am *Morning Group* Highworth Southfield Junior School, Thursday's 5.30pm and 7.30pm Contact Louise on 07717681939 Stanford in the Vale Primary School Thursday's 5.30pm & 7:30pm Call Amy on 07514 255703

Sadie started her journey in June 2017 joining Faringdon Thursday morning group with Louise. In the first 2 weeks Sadie achieved her first certificate, her half stone, followed shortly by her one stone award. Just 2 months into her weight loss journey Sadie found out she was expecting a baby, Sadie Now! not wanting to give up her weight loss journey, carried on with the agreement of her midwife (slimming world are affiliated with the royal college of midwives) knowing it was safe to carry on losing weight, under supervision. Staying every week to Image Therapy so we could monitor how Sadie was doing, Tyler, Sadie’s little boy would come along and enjoy chatting to the members of the group, playing in the toy corner. Mia her daughter would come in the summer holidays. The only time Sadie wasn’t able to stay to group was when we had a taster session, as all the yummy food on the table made Sadie feel poorly. Fighting through the cravings and working out what she could eat with the support of the group, making healthy choices where possible, but basically eating normal every day foods, which is the food optimising way. Sadie weighed in every week, including the week before giving birth, she missed the following week but only because Carter was in hospital poorly, however as determined as she was Sadie was back in group the following week to introduce baby Carter to us and lost an amazing 1 stone 9.5 pounds on the scales! Sadie has continued on her journey whilst breastfeeding as this is also supported by Slimming World, Sadie found out that Carter was having allergic reactions to certain foods, but instead of Sadie giving up breastfeeding Sadie carried on but gave up Before certain foods which Carter was allergic to, including Beef, Soya, Dairy, Eggs, Wheat, Strawberries and Onions to name a few. Finding foods she can eat whilst still food optimising with Slimming World. We love having Sadie and her children with us at Faringdon Slimming World which meet every Thursday morning 9.30am at Faringdon United church, she helps out on the social team, contributes to the taster sessions and has even helped us to raise money for charity with getting muddy! During the year we also run member competitions, where the members nominate each other, we hear some very inspirational and emotional stories, then vote who to crown whichever competition is running, Sadie has been crowned our Woman of the Year twice, has also won slimmer of the week and slimmer of the month many times throughout her journey. To date Sadie has lost a staggering 6 stone with 1 stone to go to reach her Personal achievement target. Faringdon and Highworth Slimming World groups, currently have 4 pregnant ladies all doing really well as members, losing weight to conceive a baby, to adopt and even be given the opportunity of IVF. Everyone is welcome to join Louise at Faringdon United Church Wednesdays 5.30 and 7.30pm. Thursday mornings 9.30am. Highworth is held at Southfield Junior School in the main hall every Thursday 5.30 and 7.30pm. Contact Louise on 07717681939

Roberts Reflections!

Welcome to another ramble through a kaleidoscope of subjects! Our covered bird feeders are swinging in the wind and from movements of the birds busy on the peanuts. So what sort of Winter, can we expect? How can we help our pets keep warm and safe? If it’s cold for you, it’s cold for your pet, that’s the key message from the British Veterinary Association as it urges pet owners to take extra precautions to ensure their dogs, cats and other small pets are kept safe from hidden and potentially fatal hazards as temperatures plunge around the UK. As with humans, pets can fall ill upon exposure to extremely cold temperatures for extended periods. To avoid this, vets advise that dogs are walked for shorter periods of time than usual, but more frequently if required, and to consider putting a coat on old dogs or those with thin fur to keep them warm. Keep older cats inside during an extremely cold spell and ensure that even healthy young cats have easy access to shelter and warmth. When walking your dog in ice and snow, do not let it off the lead and avoid walking in areas where ponds or lakes may have frozen over - animals often don’t understand the difference between solid ground and ice and can fall through. It’s also important to wipe your dog’s paws and belly on returning home from a snowy walk to remove any ice or salt, and to regularly check for cracks in paw-pads or for redness between the toes. Small pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs that usually live outdoors are vulnerable to the cold and damp despite their furry coats. Owners with outdoor hutches and runs should be extra vigilant during the cold snap and make sure that their pets’ living space is well-protected from snow, frost and winter rain and kept dry. Give rabbits and guinea pigs extra bedding to keep warm and check their water bottle or bowl regularly, as these can freeze when the temperature drops. B. V. A. President Simon Doherty said, “Extreme cold weather calls for extra precautions to keep our furry friends warm and safe. Even simple things like leaving your dog outside a shop in this weather whilst you pop in for a bit or putting your cat out all night can risk a range of avoidable illnesses. Domestic rabbits and guinea pigs are also vulnerable to hypothermia despite their warm coats, which is why owners need to be vigilant and take steps to ensure their hutches are protected from the snow, cold draughts and winter rain. If owners have any concerns about their pet in this cold weather, they should consult their local vet for advice.” So, please feel free to ask us for advice! As I prepare for a busy and very varied semi-retirement and volunteer work. I believe that my profession has so much to offer in addition to the best possible welfare for pets, wildlife and our One World way of working with our medical professional colleagues, both locally, nationally and internationally. For one example - Mission Rabies - I’ve written about in past articles and they still amaze me: in India and Malawi, mass vaccination of dogs continues by volunteer vets, nurses and local dog catchers in addition to the education staff extending the Rabies Reduction Education Programme. To date, the staff have reached over 2.3 million children, over 55 thousand teachers and almost half a million communities. Take care, have a safe, warm and enjoyable February! Let’s talk about Wine!

| The Advertiser | page 11 |

Boxed Wine!

A Panto by Peter Ayre Published by Lazy Bee Scripts

While wandering round our local supermarkets, I noticed a number of wines sold by the box. At first I thought - can’t be any good. Then I realised I had not tried any boxed wine for a number of years. So I bought some to try out, then invited some friends round to help by giving their opinion on the three wines I picked. I chose a white from Waitrose - called Kiwi Cuvee, a red Merlot from Tesco and a red Shiraz from Aldi. But first, what are the benefits of wine in a box versus a bottle. Wine in a box is actually in a plastic bag inside the box. There is a simple tap attached to the bag, which you fiddle around with to get it out and clip it into the hole made when you open the box. As the bag has no air inside it, the wine will not go off, so it will last for around 6 weeks from the first pour of wine (not a chance of testing that out). A box usually contains at least 3 full bottles of wine and sometimes 4. Clearly this is a plus as you can just have a single glass at a time if you choose, or take a few days off drinking. The downside is that the wines I found were all young, so had not had time to develop extra flavours that you can find in a wine that has had a couple of years to age. Tasting each one I found three drinkable wines. The Sauvignon Blanc from Waitrose at £16.99, was slightly pale in colour and had a nice smell of tropical fruit. It tasted fresh and fruity with moderate acidity, so your mouth will water and you get a good blast of flavours. Chilled, this makes a nice drink for parties. The Merlot from Tesco was £12.75 and is a pleasing medium deep red colour with a light smell of cherries. The taste was also of cherries plus some berries, with just a hint of tannin, balanced by a low acidity. It went down well with the lamb stew and some cheese later. The Shiraz from Aldi at £11.29 is a deeper red than the Merlot. The smell is of various berries and the flavour delivers more of a mix of berries with a little peppery spice to liven it up. Almost no tannin detected and light on the acidity as well. Again, it went down well with the lamb and delivered a pleasant glass of wine. In the supermarkets, Waitrose and Aldi had 3 boxes each on display, though both have more on line. Tesco had 12 boxes to choose from, 7 white, 4 red and a Perry wine. The verdict - try some, you could be surprised. Great value and perfect for having a glass when you fancy. Equally good for a party and those taps work very well on the box. Everyone that tasted the wines could not find fault and all three passed the test of having a second glass. Please enjoy your wine and drink responsibly. Ian Lloyd

Healthy Living!

| The Advertiser | page 15 |

Healthy Living Are you still making mistakes with your lifestyle changes when trying to lose weight? We are a month into the New Year, are you seeing a difference yet? If not what could you be doing wrong? Your scales might not the best indicator of change. Our body weight can fluctuate throughout the day because of things like water retention, hormones, and the food we are eating and digesting. Over the longer term you might be losing fat but gaining muscle which might not be easy to spot. Change of body composition is more important than just weight and can often be seen in your overall shape even if your weight remains the same. So what can we do if the weight doesn’t seem to be coming off or your shape remains the same? Is that belt still too tight around your waist? What can be holding back your weight loss? Some suggestions for you! 1. You might actually just be eating too much. It is quite often the case that we are really careful with our main meals but seem to forget our snacks. A biscuit or two at the office, a bag of crisps in the car, a packet of sweets on the train or a slice of bread or glass of wine while we’re preparing our meals often go unnoticed. These all add to our calorie intake but can get forgotten when filling in our food diary. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of us consume a third more calories than we thought! So be vigilant and honest with yourself – it might explain what’s going on. Remember it’s very easy to drink our calories too. Sweetened water drinks, fizzy drinks and alcohol all affect how our bodies function. 2. When trying to rebalance your weight the body will want to resist any change. Massively reducing your calorie intake can work and have healthy consequences for the body when done correctly but it can also lead to us being hungry and more tempted to give up and go back to our old ways. Focus on improving your lifestyle habits and adding nourishing foods rather than just deleting from your diet. It might make you happier and more likely to maintain some sort of long term programme. 3. It is easy to become addicted to junk food and you might need help to reduce the cravings which are leading to you over eating. Eating cleaner can help with this, as lessprocessed and high fibre foods will release their energy more slowly, and keep you feeling fuller for longer 4. Even when medical conditions hinder progress a lot can be achieved by making small changes to diet and increasing your levels of exercise. 5. We can easily eat a lot of food in a short space of time without considering it too much. Are you eating slowly enough to allow your natural signals from your body to tell you that it is full? 6. Eating ‘on the go’ is a common mistake which leads to overeating. You’re not focusing on your eating and so don’t register that you’ve actually had a meal. 7. Are you in the habit of eating too often? Do you really need another snack? Are you actually hungry? Even if it is nourishing it might contain a lot of additional unnecessary calories.

8. Busy at work? Had a hectic day? Being busy might not be the same as being active. It is easy to eat more than enough food for an active person even when we are the one stuck at our desk or behind the wheel of our car. Better not to ‘put it in’ than to try to ‘burn it off’. 9. Focusing on the detail and ignoring the obvious happens a lot when we are looking for ways to improve our body shape. Whether you use olive oil or butter to cook with may be less important than what it is that we are cooking. Often the first thing I can do to help people is to point out the simple changes which might affect the weight and shape we are. Then just as importantly supporting and motivating until the end goal is achieved. With knowledge we can make change. Rich Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com

RICS Residential Market

Another, less obvious, characteristic of the current market is the low level of first time buyers (FTBs). This situation was noted recently in the national press and attributed to FTB’s believing that prices might fall during the continued Brexit uncertainty.

Clearly something is making them hold back and with the cost of borrowing still very low, this has to be the most likely reason. The number of properties for sale up to £300,000 in our region is very significantly higher than it was 6 months ago The recent RICS Residential Market and what is usually the strongest and most active end of the Survey for 2018 paints a pretty neutral picture of market market is now markedly quieter. activity across the whole of the UK in terms of activity and Our advice to anyone looking to enter the market for the price changes. Club and shoes repairs The bicycle stood by the wall neglected and tormented, along with memories, once so vividly coloured. Its green paintwork so bright had dulled, merging gradually with tendrils of ivy that grasped its weather worn saddle. Your saddle. I reminded myself, blinking hard, not to resurrect that day. No one had warned me about the pain. Pain I had worked hard trying to forget, conceal, obscure until the bicycle provoked it. Unexpectedly standing there, a memorial stone to our relationship. Its tall, strong frame and proud indefatigable desire to live on despite the climatic highs and lows captured me. Your smile flashed into existence for the briefest of exigencies like the chrome wheels that once drove you on. Flashing zirconium-light, the bulbs of a paparazzi sun‌.now pitted with the onset of oxidation, as my memories . Spokes hung in a fragile tracery of Haversham lace illuminated by the hoar frost whose beauty belied the sadness with nothing to say. All deflated rubber now. Just an intriguing journey cancelled, forsaken, aborted in a tangled collision of punctured disappointment.

Becoming

By Michelle Obama

The publication of Michelle Obama’s memoir was greeted by the world with something like hysteria towards the latter end of last year. For a while it was all anyone was talking about. It was accompanied by a publicity tour that took in the audiences of anyone who’s anyone in media and the showbiz world – Sarah Jessica Parker, and that grand-dame of inspiration Oprah Winfrey. I picked up my copy equally feverishly just before Christmas, imagining people all across the world waking up to this in their stocking on Christmas Day. And I am happy to confirm that the fuss was worth it. Michelle Obama’s memoir is remarkable not only for the journey that took the former First Lady from a working class family in Chicago via Princeton and Harvard to the White House. But for the representation of a refined era that is far from the one we are living through at the moment.

If we had to explain to beings from another planet how we had gone from President Obama to ‘President’ Trump they would think we were in meltdown. Contrast the educated, erudite, compassionate former First Family with the circus that is taking place daily at the White House. The contrast couldn’t be more glaring. Michelle Robinson Obama witnessed the journey of Barack Obama from legal intern, to senator, to presidential candidate to Commander in Chief. But by saying she merely ‘witnessed’ it is to take away from her role in informing the man that was Barack Obama. They are two halves that make a whole. Outlining the scrutiny she and her family faced as America’s first black family in the White House, Michelle has grace and objectivity tells it like it is with very little embellishment. She was very clear on the kind of First Lady she wanted to be – one that made a difference. Through her initiatives that tackled childhood obesity, that built support for military families and for the empowerment of under-privileged girls around the world she built her legacy. This is a memoir of hope – hope for a better day, and hope that the pendulum will swing back to a world we recognise again. If the author put a foot wrong in this inspiring book I didn’t notice.

Whisky is very misunderstood, with customers often asking or stating – ‘we don’t drink blends’ or ‘why is whisky spelt in two different ways’. They educate us too. I was somewhat taken aback to find that one memorable customer who had over a period of time been working his way through our Bourbons giving accurate notes, had added coke to them all. we may well shudder at this. But when I thought about it, we gleefully corrupt tea or coffee with milk, sugar, lemon, cinnamon etc but can still confidently tell the difference between each cup, so what is the difference to adding coke to your Bourbon. ‘Food’ for thought, drink it how you wish and enjoy. We’d like to address these misunderstandings in alphabetical order, to help clear the haze, read with a dram – it helps! Alcohol, in pole position. In whisky law almost world wide, whisky is not whisky at less than 40% abv or 80% US proof imagine whisky without alcohol. Neither must it be distilled above 94.8% abv, phew? So there are other uses for alcohol, - it is said that one can spot a distillery worker on frosty days, car windscreens are totally clear and midges also miraculously disappear in it’s presence! Blends. This is one of the most confusing words in the whisky world, most of the whiskies on our shelves are blends. But they are malt whiskies I hear you say. Yes, but, the Master Blenders skilfully blend in older whiskies to maintain flavour and character, so your favourite 12 year old single malt may have some for instance 13 year old, some 15 year old etc. Age statements are not an average but the youngest age of whisky in the bottle. So blends may be of single malts (from one distillery), blended malts (more than one distillery), blended grain whisky or blends of grain and malt whisky such as Famous Grouse, Bells etc. Often considered by many a cheap whisky but think of Johnnie Walker Blue, Chivas Royal Salute and Dimple, they are all aged, high quality blends of grain and malt whisky. Casks, barrels in other words, are whisky containers, nearly always from oak grown in America or Europe, often recycled ex Bourbon Casks (a cask is used once only for Bourbon ) or ex Port or Sherry casks but wine casks from round the globe are also used. Wood is the only legal material with a maximum capacity of 700 litres, but no minimum size. Often re-worked and re-charred inside they are re-used several times. The ageing spirit interacts through the porous wood and air, drawing character from them and it’s previous contents. Spirit and volume drop over time. Cask Strength Single Cask Whisky is the product of one cask only, the label usually shows age, date of distillation, cask number, bottling date, alcohol level and number of bottles filled, they are often expensive and irreplaceable. In the summer, Faringdon will be hosting ten children from le Mêle-sur-Sarthe, which is Faringdon’s twin town in Normandy. Some of the children have been before and can’t wait to come again. They will know the ropes, but others won’t. You could meet and get to know them during their stay here, and when they go back home, you could go with them and stay (usually in pairs, with a friend) with their families in France. You will travel by coach to Portsmouth, take the ferry to Caen, and then on the coach again to le Mêle. While you are in France, whatever transport is needed will be provided by your hosts, as will your accommodation and all your meals. Apart from the educational and cultural benefits of this trip, there are many fun things that are arranged while you are there, often a visit to the seaside and a theme park, sometimes Go Ape or go-karting. Le Mêle has a lake with a beach and pedalos. All the host families are personally known to members of the Twinning Association, so your parents can rest assured that you will be perfectly safe in their care. The French children arrive on Sunday 14 July and return to France on Sunday 21 July. If you go with them, your return date to the UK will be Saturday 27 July. The cost for this all-inclusive adventure is £130. The Faringdon Twinning Association would welcome new young members, and would particularly like to hear from anyone who would like to join us as youth leaders. Youth leaders have their trip paid for. They are expected to supervise the younger members, so should be Year 12 or 13. Some French language is helpful but not essential. Being a leader is great for your personal statement for Uni. For more information on all the above, or to express interest in taking part please ring Andy Hayter on 07552788994 or e-mail: faringdontwinning@gmail.com
