One of my favourite artists Ben F Jeffery a young man with unbelievable talent, now exhibiting on the 19th of February at Montague’s Gallery, Herts, WD4 9HT.

Ben F Jeffery

Born in 1986 grew up in Barnet north London. Always having a keen interest in art ever since his Grandad introduced him to the work of John Varley, the renowned 18th Century watercolour artist. The Varley’s are related to the Jeffery family. First realising he wanted to be an artist in secondary school Ben and a few classmates used to have bets to see who could draw the best portrait of someone. He really enjoyed going to school and showing them his, to see their reaction. He painted a portrait of his dad for a mock GCSE which got admired by the entire art class. His work is fairly diverse ranging from portraits to landscapes in both pencil and oils. Ben loves working with vivid, bright colours to create a unique and modern style. Saturday morning at 9am under the Town Hall is the start for 20 or 40 miles cycling on country roads avoiding busy main roads. Different routes every week, emailed out on a Friday, means that you can really get to know the beautiful area we live in. But there is much more to Farcycles pronounced Farcicals! Than a group of MAMILs Middle-Aged Men In Lycra riding on a Saturday morning. It aims to be a sociable ride and we would like to encourage more ladies and young people to join in. Do come along. Now into its 7th year, Farcycles has developed to encompass many different aspects of cycling. 2014 saw the start of Sunday rides – these are leisurely, no lycra in sight, about 10-15 miles, and family friendly. The ride usually has a pub or cafe stop. These were called ‘Dust off your Bike’ and many have done just that. After a winter break, the rides will be starting up again on Sunday 8th March, meeting at 11am under the Town Hall. Just turn up. Summer sees some off-road rides on a Wednesday evening, which will be publicised nearer the time. Farcycles also organises a road cycling sportive each year. 200 riders took part in 2014 and the feedback was very positive – it definitely is the best one around. This year’s event is on Saturday 8th August, and has routes of 35, 70 and 111 miles. It has sold out each year so be sure to get your entry in early by visiting the British Cycling web-site. As well as all of this, Farcycles aims to promote cycling locally. To get involved, just turn up on a Saturday or Sunday, and you’re sure of a warm welcome. email farcycles@gmail.com for more details or information.

Lets Talk about Wh isky

0 0 0 1

There was a lot of press coverage when Jim Murray recently named the Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 as his number one whisky in the world in the annually released Whisky Bible but it is not the first time that Japanese whisky has received recognition for its quality. In recent years it has come increasingly to the fore – gaining many gold awards in competitions, and titles such as World's best single malt and best blended whisky in the World Whisky Awards. The Japanese have been distilling for many years but it wasn’t until the early 1900’s that they turned their attentions to whisky. The founding father of Japanese whisky was Masataka Taketsuru, who journeyed to Scotland in 1918 to learn the secrets of whisky making, and whilst studying chemistry at the University of Glasgow also gained experience working in numerous distilleries (including Hazelburn). When he returned home to Japan he took not only his new knowledge but also a Scottish wife called Rita, who was a great influence in his subsequent life and who never returned again to Scotland. Taketsuru initially put his knowledge to use building the first Japanese whisky distillery for Suntory but he then moved on to build his own distillery, Yoichi, with the location specifically chosen to be similar in environment to Scotland. 35 years later he built a second distillery, Miyagikyo, in another location and formed the Nikka company. Over the years the number of active Japanese distilleries has risen to around 9, with Suntory and Nikka owning two each of these. Whilst it is true to say that Japan’s whisky production knowledge came originally from Scotland, and the distilleries are sometimes located in similar environments, there are many differences in the Japanese way of working. For example, they usually have many different shaped stills within one distillery allowing them to produce a variety of styles of whisky. Additionally, they have stills for producing grain whisky as well as malt and so can produce blends ‘in house’ (blends, I might add, that are complex and delicious – whether it is the powerful Nikka or the elegant Suntory Hibiki). Interestingly, it is also in Japan and not Scotland that there is still a distillery (Yoichi) operating the very traditional coal fired stills and this gives the whisky a distinct rich and oily character that varies from the soft, floral, fruity and elegant style more generally found in Japanese whisky. Add to this their use of different types of woods for maturation (such as the Japanese Mizunara oak) and an approach to whisky making that embodies the Japanese ideals of harmony and precision and you can see why the whisky may have similarities to Scottish whisky but also has its own distinct character which is rightly gaining recognition for its quality and fabulous flavours.

The bear and the rested man Just saying the word ‘stress’ makes our heart beat a little faster and our shoulders stiffen up. We all experience feeling stressed at some point. Whether it is the stress of choosing, change or conflict, even cooking. Stress is ever present, ready to loom and take hold. But what is it that makes some situations more stressful than others and some people better able to deal with stress? When we get stressed the body kicks into fight or flight mode. Years ago, this was a useful response when we were being chased by a bear because it meant we could become superhuman and run faster to escape. Even now, in small doses it can be useful to help us achieve daily challenges like important presentations, financial budgeting or getting your children to accept it’s bedtime. A build up of stress can cause a range of symptoms. Mind

Mood

Anxiety, memory problems, Difficulty concentrating.

Agitated, aggressive, overwhelmed.

Body

Behaviour

Headaches and migraines, tight shoulders and teeth grinding, rapid heart beat and panic attacks, nausea, diarrhoea or constipation.

Eating too much or too little, Oversleeping and insomnia Procrastination, angry or withdrawn.

What a miserable list! Fear not, there are lots of ways of managing stress and tools to stay calm. 1. Write down all the things you have to do and categorise them into important / non important / urgent / non urgent. Do everything that is important and non urgent. Then nothing turns into an important and urgent item, therefore you avoid stress. Delete anything from your list that is unimportant and learn to say no to unimportant tasks. 2. Breath. It sounds really easy, but notice what happens when you get stressed. Your breath becomes shallow and short. Take time out to focus on breathing deep into your whole body, into your feet and into your heart. 3. Do something wholesome for yourself every day. It might be calling a friend, having a bath, doing some exercise or having a treatment.

It’s time for some ‘me time’ A recent study shows that on average, women only have 17 minutes for themselves to relax each day. That isn’t enough, is it? Forget the job, kids and housework for an hour or two. You deserve a treat! Take some time out and come to The Rookery Open Day, on Saturday 7th March from 10am - 4pm. Feel your energy restored by indulging in a natural healing therapy. Relax and feel invigorated with a therapeutic exercise or singing class. Treat yourself to a new haircut, or just hang out in the coffee shop. The open day will be celebrating spring: a time of growth, creativity and change. Spring can be a wonderful time of new ideas and abundant energy, but if you haven’t had the opportunity to adequately rest in the winter, then spring can aggravate old symptoms and you can feel stressed. The Rookery’s team of highly qualified and experienced therapists will be on hand for you to try taster sessions. Therapies include acupuncture, homeopathy, herbal medicine, Thai massage, tui na Chinese therapeutic massage, Indian head massage and reiki. There will also be interactive workshops, demonstrations and talks. Find out how you can use homeopathy to help with skin related conditions, herbs for detox and acupuncture for stress. Reiki is a sublime way to rebalance your energy with the transition of the season. And massage is great any time of year, but particularly in the spring as you get increasingly active. Celebrate the renewed abundance of nature's therapeutic store cupboard with a beautiful, informative, interactive display of common spring herbs. You can discover the delicious, fragrant health benefits of some of our most humble native plants as they follow the display "from plant, to pot, to potion" around The Rookery coffee shop. Sing in the Spring at a workshop for everyone. All the birds are doing it! Find your voice and experience the joy of singing. Whatever your ability, Nina will help you to warm up and sing to simple folk tunes. Tune up your body and shake off the winter blues with some pilates or tai chi. Both classes work on the principles of building core strength, relaxing the mind, improving posture and flexibility. Spring brings many changes and your hair is just as prone to being altered by the seasons as you are internally. At cm Hair, we will be helping with techniques to reduce frizz, static and dryness that can happen during this period, as well as introducing new styles and colour choices for you. 01367 240 678 23/24 Market Place, Faringdon, Oxon, SN7 7HU Arriving at Sadlers on a cold wet Wednesday evening, I didn’t know what to expect. I hadn’t, in my 7 years in Faringdon, been there for an evening meal, though I had heard Paul the chef and his lovely wife Sietske had a good reputation. We were welcomed by a member of staff, a young woman who was very pleasant and immediately made us feel at ease, and asked if we would like to relax on a sofa by the log burner or go straight to our table? What a pleasant choice! A definite, for a romantic date night, chilled out by the fire with a glass of something, then saunter along for a candle lit meal, nice idea! Gents take note..! As I was with my brother we opted to go straight to our table. Sadlers has a beautiful oldie worldly feel to it, with low ceilings, exposed wooden beams, unusual iron bits and pieces adorning the walls, nooks and crannies, with lanterns, paintings, crockery, mirrors, ornaments tactfully displayed. If the conversation dips then there is more than enough to rest your eyes on and take in. With wooden floors, tables and chairs, it has a very warm, friendly feel to the place, and very quickly filled up with customers that evening. After we were settled down with a very pleasant glass of house red, Sietske brought us a freshly baked garlic flatbread, just enough to nibble on while deciding what to have from the wide choice on the Winter@Sadlers new menu, which I must say is a pleasant surprise on the pocket. One course £13.95. Two courses £18.00. Three courses £22.00 My brother opted for the sizzled long cut salami on brioche with Parmesan shavings and oils, beautifully presented with lots of flavour, the perfect size for a starter. I had pointed roasted red pepper with mascarpone and smoked pancetta, a work of art on the plate, utterly delectable on the pallet and a very fine start to the meal. Main course then followed with deer goulash on curly kale and rosti potato. The deer was cooked perfectly covering the kale, with just the right amount of rosti potatoes to suffice, the verdict was excellent! For me, what a pleasant surprise to find an option from my homeland South Africa. A chicken bobotie and lamb bunnychow. Chicken bobotie famously originates in the Durban KwaZulu-Natal province and is a mix of spiced chicken and fruit with a creamy golden topping. In a similar sized dish on the same plate the Lamb Bunnychow which also originates in Durban but from within the Indian community. A Lamb bunnychow is a hollowed out loaf of bread filled with unbelievable curry. Paul’s of course was just the right size a person could eat pleasantly, served in a hollowed out roll, with a side dish of sour cream. Both took me back to Durban's sea front watching the Surfing Festival, the guy’s skills, unbelievable! The taste of Africa in Faringdon! I would really recommend it, and am looking forward to having it again soon. Both of our main courses came served with a side dish of salad. For Dessert, a lovely touch again, the menu written on a mirror and brought over to the table, we had a Gooey Chocolate Brownie, and a Creme Brulee, which brought a super meal to a perfect end! We were offered coffee which we had to decline as nothing more could pass our lips... Sietske and Paul offer a warm quirky, venue to eat and drink in. They are attentive to service and perfect hosts for a super dining evening out! Sadlers also offer Outside Catering for any event, including weddings, as well as hiring out of Sadlers catering equipment. They are open in the evenings for supper Wednesday to Friday. And during the day Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 - 3:00

Yorkshire Puddings

There seems to be a national day for pretty much everything these days, which can be really rather irksome. And a lot of these seem to revolve around food! Herb week, cheese week, carrot day or even chocolate. But for this time of year I actually think that National Yorkshire Pudding day is pretty fun! Forget the reasoning behind all of these weird and wonderful dates and just take it for what it is. Although if you are like myself, you maybe rather awful at making Yorkshires. But perhaps a little practice could do the trick! And there is rather more you can do with this delicious baked batter than just serve it with roast beef. Although my mouth is fair watering just talking about it!

BATHROOM SHOWROOM Open to the Public & Trade

For your dream bathroom Let us help!‌ T:01367 242666 faringdon@activeplumbingsupplies.co.uk Unit A&B, Park Road, Faringdon, SN7 7DS

Serve with any roast. Don't gasp, it works! Or use a large individual pudding as a receptacle to serve ladles of steaming stew, be it chicken or beef. Use a giant yorkie as a case for quiche style fillings. Just make your Yorkshire, bake and then fill with all of the ingredients for your favourite savoury tart. Vegetables and meat or fish and a savoury custard. Bake again carefully until set. Or use one as a bowl for ice-cream with a rich warming chocolate sauce. Thinking along the lines of a toad in the hole, its lovely to use fruit in a batter pudding like this. In France there is a dish called clafoutis which is often filled with cherries. Although many fruits will work perfectly. For a great store cupboard pudding, which will be a good pre-made dish also. Here we have apple and cinnamon Yorkshire with a silky custard. Make a batter. Whisk together 200g plain flour, 25g brown sugar, 1tsp cinnamon and 3 eggs then 300ml milk. Whisk until smooth. Let the batter stand for a while whilst you get the remaining ingredients together. Use some lovely red skinned eating apples. Cut in to wedges and place 3-4 pieces in to the holes of a muffin tin. Pour over a tsp of oil, sunflower or ground nut, then place in a hot oven and roast until starting to soften. Carefully pour over the batter and get it to the oven quickly to cook for another 20 minutes. Serve straight from the oven with a warm creamy custard. Delicious! Try it with a pear or even a pineapple, to ring the changes. Lesley Holdship Hare in the Woods 07754 086316 facebook.com/hareinthewoods Twitter @hareinthewoods 11 London St Faringdon SN7 7AE

Have you ever heard of Tannat? I had the great fortune of coming up close and personal with Tannat on my recent visit to the Barossa Valley wine region in South Australia. It was quite unexpected, as I had read about this black grape variety during my studies and was aware that it was produced commercially in the South Americas. It appears that globalisation has infiltrated the wine industry too. The Barossa Tannat was from the small producer, Massena. Interestingly, these winemakers like to dabble with your ‘not-the-run-of-the-mill’ grape varieties found in Australia, such as primitivo, mataro and durif. This wine left a lasting impression; bold dark rich blackberry fruit with juicy ripe rich tannins. Upon my return to the UK, I have searched a few High Street and online retailers in search of Tannat, however it appears that this grape variety is somewhat a well-kept secret! Further research has revealed that its origins lie in the Basque country, on the border between France and Spain. Here, in the shadow of the Pyrenees Mountains, the terrain is rough and rugged, so it is only fitting that Tannat should create wines which are equally deep, dark, dry and rustic. Although Tannat is still used among the foothills here, the most famous Tannat wine is made a little way to the north, in Madiran. Tannat’s second home is Uruguay, where it was also known as ‘Harriague’ after the Frenchman who brought cuttings from the Basque region. These wines are influenced by the climate’ making the tannins more rounded. Commercial practice sees it often blended with softer grape varieties such as merlot or pinot noir. Michel Torino Don David Tannat 2012 Cafayate, Argentina £9.49 Slightly smoky and brambly, there’s great intensity to the generous sour cherry and blackcurrant aromas, with vanilla spice and tobacco undertones. A soft, succulent palate shows juicy balsamic notes, dark fruit, strawberries, blueberries, prunes and pepper spice. Very concentrated and modern, this is opulent with mouth filling rounded tannins. A perfect companion to venison or barbecued ribeye steak! Available from Den Boer Wines. Donna 01367 241169 / 07919 241881 Email: donnarogers@denboerwines.com www.denboerwines.com

| The Advertiser | page 17 | Hello and welcome to another ramble through all matters that may be of equal concern to you, dear Reader. With the topic of dementia never being far away, the chances of someone we know being actually affected by it, as carer, friend or loved one, is increasing. It is a tribute to people like Sir Terry Pratchett, openly dealing with his “embuggerance”, and to the interviewees in the programme on Radio 4 one evening late last year, that the profile of this condition is more open and in the public domain. I’ve decided to become a ”Dementia Friend”, with an eye on becoming a Dementia Champion. These are the initiatives of the Alzheimer’s Society. May I just quote two pieces from another initiative of the Society, “The Little Book of Friendship”: “I don’t in many ways think of myself as being ill. Most of the things I could do, I can still do, just not in the same way” (Rusty, living with Alzheimer’s); also, “LISTEN – being a good listener is important to any friendship. But taking the time to listen in a way that reassures your friend with dementia is one of the best ways to help. Keeping eye contact, not interrupting and being patient will help your friend feel comfortable.” A friend with dementia can easily be a client and we are here at the service of clients for their pets, in a way that helps each other to give the best care for their four-legged friend and member of the family. It is my opinion that as a professional, I should be in a position to give this extra support whenever needed, whenever I can recognise the need to. Also in clients’ thoughts, especially those of you who travel with their pets on a PETS passport, will be the holiday plans for later in the year. New changes to the passports have already taken effect; they are designed to strengthen enforcement across the EU, improve compliance and improve the security and trace ability of the actual passport itself. The minimum age for a Rabies vaccination is now 12 weeks. Two points to make here only – (1) it is even more necessary to make sure that your pet is fully compliant with the EU Travel Scheme rules BEFORE you leave the UK, and (2), if you already have a passport for your pet, YOU DO NOT NEED to get a new one, unless all the treatment spaces are filled, as ALL EXISTING passports will remain VALID for the lifetime of your pet. Thinking of Rabies and my support to the charity, Mission Rabies, great work has been done by all the hundreds of volunteers out there in India, where, with published statistics stating that one person is bitten by a dog EVERY 2 seconds, the cost of the prophylactic treatments are borne by those people who can least afford to pay. Only one person in a group of affected people may be able to afford the cost of the extra immunoglobulin dose. WHO estimates that the cost of a full post-bite course represents, on average wages, 31 working days – in Africa it rises to 51 days. Compare this to the all-in-all cost of giving a healthy dog a rabies vaccination in India of just under £1; this is a magnificent act of animal welfare that directly extends to human welfare. A massive neutering programme is already in hand, reducing stray dog numbers, reducing the pressure on vaccination costs and helping the charity achieve the goal of vaccinating 70% of all dogs in any given area, year on year, for 3 years – and to then eliminate the rabies virus from that area and surrounding areas. I’m delighted that one of our former work-experience students, now at Bristol Vet School, will be joining Mission Rabies next year, as a volunteer. The PDSA Animal Welfare Report was published in December last year and there’s a lot of animal welfare education to be done over here in the UK, let alone the Mission Rabies volunteers talking to the 70,000 schoolchildren in Goa, India, about how to look after themselves better, regarding pets, street dogs and rabid cows. The Report is based on 1069 pet owner respondents and 572 veterinary professionals. The PDSA introduced the report by saying that the findings “have highlighted that the welfare needs of millions of UK pets are still being neglected, resulting in a nation of ill, lonely, aggressive, stressed and obese pets.” The Report estimates that there are about 1.5 million dogs that are under-socialised as puppies, with all the potential problems that follow-on. In 2016, the microchipping of ALL DOGS is compulsory, but only 2/3rds of dog owners are aware of this. Also, too many pet owners had no real idea of the true cost of home and veterinary welfare needs over that pet’s lifetime. Many practices like us are already helping by offering free micro-chipping for one year to April THIS year, thanks to the generosity of each practice and in particular that of The Dog’s Trust, who have sponsored the campaign. Many practices too are also offering pet health plans, which have been carefully worked out to reflect the true cost of veterinary care for each size of pet, but which have simple direct debit payments arranged. Imagine the costs in looking after the rescue, fostering, veterinary treatment including surgery, forest patrols with vehicles and on foot, population education, in order to rehabilitate those orphaned, trapped, maimed, very rare Sumatran tigers in Indonesia and with the help of an associated zoo in Australia, as seen in a recent TV programme. So, we’ve whizzed around the World a bit this month! I hope that some of what I’ve written will be of real interest to you, maybe very relevant in fact to some; I look forward to meeting up again next month.

Tips to Improve Your Life

Feeling energetic is a key to happiness and to self-esteem, so take steps to keep your energy high. How you think of yourself greatly affects how successful you can be. What can I start doing today to make my life happier and more fulfilling? 1. Put yourself higher up the importance list You need to be in the best shape both physically and emotionally to deal with all the things life throws at you. If you do this you are in a better position to help the other people that are important in your life such as family and close friends. Only once you have realised the importance of ‘self’ can you then go forward to improve all other things in your life. 2. Focus on one thing at a time and give it your full attention When it comes to health and fitness see it as a priority. If you are healthy and if you feel great about your physique you are better placed to help others either at home or in the workplace or your social group to improve their lives too. Whatever you do to prioritise your health and fitness put it in the diary as an unmovable appointment so that everything else has to be organised around it. See the value of your personal training session, massage or gym session, and enjoy what’s happening, while it’s happening. 3. Know the difference between what is important and what is urgent Most of us spend too much time on urgent things and not enough time on important things. Think about the difference between what is important and what is urgent then review your ‘to do’ list and do what is important first even if it seems like everything is important - focus! 4. Go with your ‘gut feeling’ By all means listen to other people’s advice but go with what feels right for you and what fits with your priorities. Do not allow others to confuse you. Concentrate your efforts on people that have your best interests at heart. The outcome will be a happier YOU. 5. Avoid feeling you need to do it all by yourself Learn about how to improve your health and wellbeing by using professional advice from those who know how to help. Sometimes you can’t do it all alone and it is actually ok to ask for help, support and motivation. Not everything can be achieved by Googling! 6. What goes around comes around Think positive thoughts and positive things will happen. Listen to others and they will listen to you. 7. Focus on what you have to gain not what you have to lose 8. Be Flexible When things don’t go as planned. Take a step back and breathe! Look back at what you are trying to achieve and aim to keep on the right path for you – good things are ahead for you! It is easy to give other people advice to improve their lives but sometimes you need to improve your life too. Once that is achieved helping others can become more effective.

So you think you could never be a runner? Think again!! If the idea of ‘a runner’ conjures up images of ultra-fit, superhumans in the pursuit of another ‘PB’, think again! We run for fitness, enjoyment, friendship, and (let’s be honest) that slice of cake! Over the last 2 years we’ve LOVED seeing apprehensive beginners transform into confident runners; let’s hear from them: Lisa Holmes: ‘I was very unfit, nervous and had never run in my life. But with Far Runners’ help and support I did a Half Marathon in 5 months! I couldn't have achieved any of it without the Far Runners.’ Rachel Greenaway: ‘I hadn't run for years… had 2 babies in 2 years and thought I would never get fit again.… I joined Far Runners as a beginner ... They were very welcoming, motivating & supportive! Less than a year on and I've never been fitter, love running and made lots of lovely friends. The best thing I ever did!’ and twin Lisa Lewis: ‘...I’m so glad that I started [running] again and with the help of Far Runners... I was nervous about running with a group but I was made very welcome.... we all motivate each other. Far Runners is a great friendly group xx’ Penny Halsall: I cannot emphasize enough the benefits of joining a group... I had never run before, within a couple of months I was able to achieve distances I never thought imaginable, I was so proud of myself… I would not have had the confidence… to achieve my running goals without them. I have made wonderful friends... Best thing I did in 2014 was to join the Far Runners.’ Samantha Bailey: ‘I had just had my second son and hadn't done any form of exercise for a long time.... within 3 months of joining I ran my first 10k and could only have done it with all the support and encouragement from Far Runners!.....’ Lucy Case: ‘I wasn’t a runner, I didn’t enjoy running and, quite frankly, a few years ago I would have been amazed at myself running now... seeing it as a way of getting fit, out in the fresh air, and to meet people, I decided to (tentatively) give it a go. It’s been great to find a club where people are friendly and can chat… whilst exploring the countryside. The Saturday group has been a relaxed and very friendly introduction to running... it doesn’t feel overwhelming... now I’ll happily run six miles!’ Fancy joining us? Our ‘Sofa to 5K’ 10-week course starts on Saturday 7 February 9.30 am at Faringdon Leisure Centre (facebook/FarRunners). Otherwise we meet at the Old Town Hall at 6:30pm on a Tuesday and 7pm on a Thursday. We also meet at the Leisure Centre at 9:30am on Sundays.

Daughter - By Jane Smelt

I’ve read some good family dramas with a mystery twist recently and this one was an excellent and addictive example of why I love these sort of stories when they are done well and in my opinion this was done very well. Jenny is a successful family doctor, the mother of three great teenagers, married to a celebrated neurosurgeon. When Naomi her daughter fails to return from her school play, her family is thrust into the limelight of a nationwide search and emotional turmoil that knows no bounds. As the story evolves between the days leading up to Naomi going missing, the immediate aftermath, then a year later, we get a realistic and emotive snapshot of how even in the closest of families, there are secrets kept hidden. I thought this was marvellously constructed with Ms Shemilt walking the line between eliciting an emotional response and keeping the story flowing along – as the personalities of the players begins to solidify and take shape this is one of those character driven novels that make you feel as if you know the people. You feel the sorrow and the anguish, the hope and the fear and all the emotions in between as Jenny searches desperately for the truth whilst trying to help her other children come to terms with their loss and keeping her own head, as the family begins to fracture this is compelling stuff. The mystery element – what happened to Naomi and why – is also extremely well drawn. By using the time slip and the character development to tell the tale rather than relying on sudden twists and turns, the reader is kept connected to the story the whole of the way through, immersed into the events and feelings of each moment in time. Once I was halfway through I barely put it down until the ending which was poignant and perfect. A tale that will stay with me for a while. Overall a brilliant and evocative story which comes highly recommended by me.

You may mistakenly think you have to speak good French to be part of the Faringdon Twinning Association. It can certainly help, and for some it gives an opportunity to improve their grasp of the language from schooldays, but in fact some of our most regular members manage little more than ‘Bonjour’, ‘Merci’ and ‘Au revoir’! This year is the 25th Anniversary of twinning between Faringdon and le Mele, a small town in Normandy, just 75 miles from the Channel port of Caen. To celebrate, there are special events in both towns. May 14-17th sees 50 or so French coming here, along with a few Czechs and Germans, who also twin with le Mele. There will be a celebratory lunch in the Corn Exchange on Saturday 16th May, and a party in the evening in the Junior School. With so many expected we would love to hear from you if you think you could host (see later). The return visit is 28-31 August (the Bank Holiday weekend), timed in particular so that families can take part. Ask anyone who has been on one of these trips and they will describe the fantastic time they have had. Something for everyone? Social – you’re bound to meet and get to know like-minded Faringdonians at these events, as well as some lovely French people, who are unbelievably hospitable. Tourists – there is always a day-trip during the visit to France, to somewhere historical or interesting, for instance in recent years, we have been to Monet’s garden and Leonardo da Vinci’s house with its working models of his inventions. Wine-drinkers – if you enjoy a glass or two, you will be in for a treat, as the French probably do keep the best in France, and they are very generous with it . . .and also the calvados! Cyclists – this year Farcycles is organising a group cycle to and from le Mele to coincide with the twinning weekend over the August Bank Holiday. Some are cycling one-way and taking the coach for the other leg – it means two days of cycling about 75 miles per day. Families – it’s a great family experience giving children an appreciation of another culture and some of the language rubs off. We try to match families according to the ages of the children, with some great friendships resulting. Teenagers – each July, just as school is finishing, a youth twinning trip for 12-15 year-olds goes to le Mele with young adult leaders for about 5 days. It’s always fantastic fun and some improvement in French language is a spin-off. This year the French will visit Faringdon from July 14-20, and Faringdon children return with them on the 20 July until 25 July. Work experience – there is the opportunity to do a very different type of work experience in le Mele, that is bound to look good on the CV. Some French language is helpful. So, are you inspired to give it a go? If you think you can host in May; or if you have a 12-15 year old who would like to go to France in July; or if you want to go to le Mele as an individual, a couple or family in August . . . . then email faringdontwinning@gmail.com or call David Williamson on 01367 240033 for more information.
