Has been painting funnylooking animals since childhood, but didn't try doing it for a living until 2009 after a couple of successful exhibitions in the south east of England. Since then her paintings have been published (by Washington Green and Art Marketing) and sold as originals around the world. She paint’s a range of animals, especially chickens, British birds, dogs and of course cats. Also enjoys painting still life pictures that feature jam (in particular half-eaten doughnuts and jam tarts). Kim’s paintings are available as originals and prints, and welcomes discussions about commissions. Currently living in Leeds, UK. Our guest speaker, Malcolm Gee, one of our wonderful First Responders rattled off CPR, AED and SCA all in one sentence! But once he had taken us through the finer points of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillators and sudden cardiac arrest, we were no longer all at sea. This was probably one of the most interactive sessions that the club had ever seen. It was also certainly the most important in terms of saving someone’s life. We had two members valiantly trying to resuscitate a dummy whilst Malcolm explained how easy it is to administer CPR (which buys valuable time before the emergency services arrive). These days it is commonplace to have an AED located nearby, which can be used by a complete amateur to re-start the heart by following the voice and visual prompts which guide the user through the defibrillation process. There are already some AEDs in situ in Faringdon and there are plans to have more. If you are a business and you would like to have an AED on your premises, please do let us know. Who knows, it could save someone’s life! FBBC’s next meeting with be on Monday 3rd February when our resident IT guru, Raoul van Eijndhoven of QuidneIT will remind us about all those things that we should be doing to ensure that our computer systems run smoothly and does not let us down when disaster strikes. FBBC, is an informal networking group which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. It meets on the first working Monday of each month at 7.30am at the Sudbury House Hotel. There is no joining fee and no restriction on who may attend, the only cost is your breakfast – just £10. If you are interested in coming to a future meeting, please visit the club’s website http://www.fbbcnetworking.co.uk or reserve your place by calling 0845 003 1340 or e-mailing paul.brame@morgan-cole.com FBBC is also on twitter and LinkedIn, follow us on @FaringdonBBC
Business Update The Faringdon Chamber of Commerce welcomed in the New Year by voting unanimously to back a proposal to create an economic development strategy for the town. One of the key outcomes of an economic development strategy is to attract investment as well as businesses looking to expand or relocate. It will demonstrate that a town is effectively open for business. Historically towns with such a strategy demonstrate quicker economic growth. Sustainable economic growth is something that the Chamber of Commerce wants to foster, rather than stand by and witness the seemingly perpetual residential development of the town’s fringes with little or no thought to providing local jobs and services to counter-balance this. If this is something that you wish to get involved with, please get in touch. We need willing hearts and minds from all trades and business types to come with us on this exciting journey. Our regular monthly meetings are open to all and take place on the second Monday of each month at 6:30pm at the Davenport’s Business Centre in the centre of town. The next meeting is on 10th February and our AGM is on 10th March at the Sudbury House Hotel. Following on from our speed networking event In January, this month we have another social event - a curry night at “The Viceroy” on Thursday 27th February. Meet at the front bar of “The Old Crown Coaching Inn” at 6pm prior to dinner at 7pm. Follow us on facebook, LinkedIn or @faringdonfirst – or visit our website www.faringdonchamberofcommerce.co.uk Yes we know it’s a bit of a mouthful!

0 0 10 The next distillery to ‘visit’ on our tour of Islay is Caol Ila, on the north east of the island. It’s in a remote and beautiful location in a hidden cove near Port Askaig, and the trip up ‘over the top’ of the island is part of the pleasure of a visit. At the right time of the year you’ll hear stags bellowing and, if you’re lucky, see a Golden Eagle floating along the scarp. Caol Ila was founded in 1846 but in the early 1970s all of the distillery apart from the warehouses was demolished and rebuilt. This gives parts of the building a look rather reminiscent of schools of that period but such horrors are dispersed when you get to the working part of the distillery and, in particular, the magnificent still room. With its floor to ceiling windows looking out over the Sound of Islay to the Paps of Jura, and it’s six gleaming bulbous, copper stills, it’s a memorable place to be. In fact, when I was there the whole visit was very memorable as distillery manager Billy Stichell gave me a tremendous tour of the distillery which culminated with several drams being imbibed whilst listening to his tales of days gone by and looking out at that stunning view. Known for its full bodied, subtly smoky/medicinal, peppery and yet sweet style, Caol Ila was for many years predominantly used in blends such as Johnnie Walker but the recent rise in the popularity of peated single malts led to some Caol Ila being released in all its unblended glory. Some unpeated whisky is now also being produced and although, again, mainly for blends some has been released as a single malt. A gentle introduction to the peated Caol Ila is the Moch. It’s creamy, lemony, sooty taste matches perfectly with some shortbread with a dollop of lemon curd on it (honestly!) and it is a very easy drinking dram. Moving on up the range, the 12 year old is an elegant, medium bodied malt with a terrific balance of smoke, oiliness, spices and sweet fruitiness. The Caol Ila Distillers Edition is an interesting whisky as after initial maturation in Bourbon casks it is transferred to Moscatel sherry casks, which results in a multi-layered delight of bonfire smoke, cinnamon, sweetness and maltiness with a crisp, dry finish. Of the unpeated expressions one is of special interest as it was released in honour of the lovely Billy Stichell, who is retiring. The whisky that has been chosen was matured in three different cask types and is sweet, spicy and aromatic. Also available in the unpeated range is a 12 year old and a 14 year old which, very unusually for the distillery, has been matured in sherry cask and marries lemony freshness with spices and fruit. | The Advertiser | page 7| Love Itself in the Letterbox By Helene Cixous '' How different we are I thought: the same words say things otherwise to us.'' I recently watched an interview with the French authoress Helene Cixous, and like this book, she is so intensely focused, it made me feel almost guilty for not writing more. For not truly investigating the inner-sanctum of my literary self-worth and value. Perhaps this ought not be totally surprising, especially when Jacques Derrida writes: '' Helene Cixous is today the greatest writer in what I shall call, if I may, my language French. And I weigh my words in saying this. For a very great writer must be a poet-thinker, very much a poet and a very thinking poet.'' One need only read a few pages of Love Itself in the Letterbox to perhaps partially ascertain and come to metaphorical grips with the above quote by Derrida. As on page seven of the opening chapter 'Olivier de Serres - A Single Passion,' Cixous writes: '' Who could have told me that everything that seemed incredible at Olivier de Serres when we were down there as if knocked over and trampled beneath paws, now forty years later we ourselves would look upon from above like gods looking at the affairs of mortals. When I awoke Olivier de Serres following your lead, I am in the midst of reading Demeure, Athenes the strange twice-haunted text by Derrida: haunted once by the death of Socrates who is a beautiful woman, dressed in white, beautiful as her name tall as her soul dressed in daylight, more exactly in the hour of the day's dawning, a second time in truth perhaps the first, by a sentence. This sentence is also tall and beautiful, but for its part or her part, she does not come, she precedes everyone.'' Are not the lines: '' haunted once by the death of Socrates who is a beautiful woman, dressed in white, beautiful as her name, tall as her soul dressed in daylight, more exactly in the hour of the day's dawning'' more poetic than fictional? More involved than they might otherwise be? More elaborate in explanation, almost to the point of expressing three or four different emotions, simultaneously? Derrida has already said it, it goes without saying that Cixous is '' very much a poet and a very thinking poet.'' Right down to the placing or non placing of commas; which Oscar Wilde was renowned for agonizing over. Love Itself in the Letterbox is, as its title suggests, an acceptance, if not appreciation of, the poetry of the post. It conveys love over a dense duration of forty years - that recoils and recalls itself - by way of the forever lost and never found. And each of the nine pieces here in, never stray too far away from the dictum that is the very last line of the seventh chapter Faithfully Forever: '' Life has two faces one of shameless happiness the other of shameless pain.'' Prior to this ultimate, clearly considered conclusion, the authoress writes: '' Are they these faithfully's the last shudders of a madman's howls? Or the withdrawal, the lull after the convulsion, the detumescence of a word, the death rattle of a god's dream of faithfulness? Or else nothing. But nothing without any meaning is impossible it seems to me for the master of poems.'' Like the authoress herself, this is a profoundly intense, individual and brilliant piece of work. As such, it's left me feeling profoundly inspired.

For the love of an Italian Varietal….. For some, February brings with it a healthy dose of anticipation of how the Royal Mail will possibly manage the hefty load of Valentine’s cards to be delivered to their door; for others, the sheer intermittent presence of that elusive ball in the sky (aka ‘the sun’), provides the promise of ‘spring about to be sprung’. Such expectation can be perhaps channelled into an avenue that it is slightly more tangible, which randomly, has led me back onto the pathway of Italian varietals. Throughout my wine learning (which is an endlessly enjoyable and somewhat inconclusive experience), the topic of Italian wines proved to be a very complicated mission indeed! Italy was one of the first off the blocks in wine production, records indicate that the Etruscans and Greek settlers founded wine making before the Romans in the 2nd Century BC. Italy shares the podium with France, claiming first place for the largest wine producer in the world, representing approximately 1/3 of the world’s production in 2012-2013. The first official classification system for wine was introduced in 1963. However, unlike the classification system where wine grapes must be grown in a designated area, vines are cultivated practically everywhere on the Italian peninsula, from the Alps in the north to the islands in the south. Such diverse wine growing terrain, soil and climates has a great influence on the range of flavours in Italy’s wines. Italy’s Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry (MIPAAF) has recorded over 350 different ‘authorised’ grape varieties; however an additional estimated 2000+ indigenous varieties are used as well. The more well-known include Sangiovese (used in Chianti Classico), Barbera, Pinot Grigio, Nebbiolo (Barolo & Barbaresco), Barbera, Corvina (Valpolicella & Amarone), Garganega (Soave) and Primitivo (aka Zinfandel in California). Imported ‘noble’ grape varieties include Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Some interesting Italian wines available locally: Canti Estate Fiano 2012 Puglia, Italy £7.49 Tesco Puglia lies on the ‘heel’ of Italy, is relatively flat and temperatures can be hot during the summer, but this is mitigated by sea breezes, particularly on the Salento Peninsula. Puglia is historically the home of red grape varieties such as Primitivo and Negroamaro, however the introduction and success of quality white grape varieties such as Fiano has gained global attention. Crisp, medium dry white wine with aromas and flavours of melon, peaches, honeysuckle and blossom, finishing with a crisp, citrus freshness. Indio Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2008 Abruzzo, Italy £13.99 Den Boer Wines The region of Abruzzo is located in Central Italy and stretches from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea on a greatly mountainous and wild terrain. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo represents over 80% of all DOC wines made in Abruzzo. Records note that the Montepulciano grape has been grown in the region since the mid-700s and that it has well cemented its place and well regarded reputation here. Composed of 90% Montepulciano and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this red wine is full bodied, rich, and opulent with supple, well integrated tannins. Aromas and flavours of wild blackberries, ripe black cherries underpinned with developed flavours of prunes and vanilla spice are rounded off with a lengthy finish. Hello Again…
Talk to the Vet !
Signs of Spring are very clear as I write – longer evenings, daffodils, leaf-spears, just appearing and snowdrops with their white bells already opening. Relentless rain has changed to some sunshine, fog, frost and dry weather but little chance for the ground to accept farm vehicles, even tractors and 4 X 4s, for weeks of drier weather to come. Some chance!
Honeybees Europe has 13.4 million too few honeybee colonies to properly pollinate its crops, according to new research from the University of Reading. In real terms, this is the equivalent of around 7 BILLION bees! The discovery, made by scientists at the University’s Centre for Agri-Environmental Research (CAER), working for the EU STEP programme on pollinator health, shows that demand for insect pollination is growing five times as fast as the number of honeybee colonies across Europe, as farmers across the continent grow more oil crops, such as oilseed rape and sunflowers, and fruit. Many of the most important crops in Europe, such as rapeseed, sunflower, soybeans, apples and strawberries benefit from pollination by bees. The research findings, led by Professor Simon Potts, suggest that agriculture in many countries is increasingly reliant upon wild pollinators, such as bumblebees, solitary bees and hoverflies. However, Europe still lacks coherent environmental and agricultural policies to protect these insects' habitats, Reading researchers warned. Professor Simon Potts added, "We face a catastrophe in future years unless we act now. Wild pollinators need greater protection. They are the unsung heroes of the countryside, providing a critical link in the food chain for humans and doing work for free that would otherwise cost British farmers £1.8bn to replace. "There is a growing disconnection between agricultural and environmental policies across Europe. Farmers are encouraged to grow oil crops, yet there is not enough joined-up thinking about how to help the insects that will pollinate them. We need a proper strategy across Europe to conserve wild bees and pollinators through habitat protection, agricultural policy and farming methods – or we risk big financial losses to the farming sector and a potential food security crisis." Help the Bees!…..

I think the cauliflower gets a bit of a hard time frankly! I used to be one of these moaners about this beautiful vegetable but am now quite converted. It's versatility is boundless and it's easy to deal with, with no preparation really at all!
way r u o Y , d l r o w Your Telephone: 01793 763181 Email: office@highworthtravel.co.uk www.highworthtravel.co.uk High Street, Highworth, Wiltshire SN6 7AG
The cauliflower is part of the brassica family. It's name derives from the Latin for cabbage which is caulis and the word flower put together. You can get different variations in other colours like purple and green as well as our usual beautiful white. It's origins are based in the Mediterranean and it worked its way up to our fair land in and around the 1700's. It was prized for a long time by the French, I would imagine because it is a thing of such beauty. And if you see the romseco variety, it is a vision of fractal wonder. It's swirls and flowing patterns in a wonderful mathematic formation. The cauliflowers that are delivered to me are grown locally and are often so enormous they break the bag handles! But they go a long way for a small amount of money which nowadays is important. So when cooking with it, don't cook it for too long. It can really suffer badly from just a short amount of over cooking with a mushy grey result, reminiscent of school! Why not try cauliflower in a curry. It really sucks in all the surrounding flavours and marries brilliantly well with coconut and almonds. Little florets thrown in to a pilaf towards the end of cooking work really brilliantly or keep it raw to dip in to hummus or guacamole. One of my most favourite things is just so obvious, most would turn their nose up at a wonderful cauliflower cheese. I really like to top it with some halved cherry tomatoes and breadcrumbs as well as the cheese and then bake until the top is really crunchy. Adding bacon or broccoli adds interest too. Today's recipe is one of my newest creations in the shop it's Cauliflower Cheese Soup. To serve 4-6 people, peel and chop an onion and soften in a knob of butter for around 5 minutes. Cut up your cauli and add to the pan, just cooking it for a few moments whilst you get the stock ready. Pour over enough stock to cover, probably around 1.5 litres, then simmer for a scant 10 minutes. Whizz with a hand blender or liquidizer and season with plenty of salt and black pepper. Add about 100ml cream, whipping or double, then add a good strong cheddar, around 150g and stir it through to melt. Serve this beautiful creamy soup with some gorgeously crunchy croutons.

Train with Someone This can be done through various means! Get a training partner Find someone who has similar goals and is of a similar ability and go to the gym or outside and train with them. This will not only make the gym or your training session more enjoyable it will make you accountable to someone else. So if you've had a bad day and are a bit tired, where it would normally have been easy to skip your session you will now have someone expecting you! Get a personal trainer Personal training may be an additional cost but if you've paid extra money for an appointment you can be pretty sure you won’t miss it! They will also be encouraging you to exercise between sessions and keeping you on track so you notice faster results! Join a class or sports team Joining an exercise class or a team for a sport is a great way to meet new people and make new friends thus making you motivated to go and exercise so you can catch up and enjoy it together. Set Goals: These should be both short and long term and specific. Short Term Short term goals are a great way to make lots of changes that you stick to over a period of time. A good technique is to make one for a week and incorporate a different one the following week and so on. For example "This week I'm going to drink at least 2 litres of water per day" By setting the target to hit and making it specific you are more likely to do it rather than if you had just said "I'm going to drink more water" Medium term These should be slightly bigger goals thus demanding more time. For example "In two months I want to lose 6lb" or "I want to lift an extra 5kg on my squat in six weeks" or "I want to decrease my 5k run time by 4 minutes in three months time" So by setting realistic but specific goals you'll be motivated to really try and achieve them! Long Term These could be anything up to over a year away and could include your final target for fat loss or it could be an event/race you've entered and need to be ready for. Seasonal Changes With summer approaching and holidays being booked, weddings planned and new clothes to be bought, there are loads of reasons to start getting into shape. A lot of people leave it late, when really the more time you give yourself, the better the outcome will be. For any further details on how to keep motivated, setting goals, or if you want a little free advice to get you started contact the team at The Gym At Carswell 01367 870337 or email richard@thegymatcarswell.co.uk

…flowers for all occasions, memories for all time
Spring is just starting to stir but its early days and there are still very few insects about. Its a great time to visit a Natural History Museum and learn a little more about arthropods in general. Natural History Museums are often housed inside stunning buildings with a heady mix of ornate architecture and detailed decorations. The Oxford University Museum of Natural History is our biggest local museum nestled amongst the dreaming spires of Oxford itself. It is a Grade 1 listed building and was closed on 30th December 2012 as well as throughout 2013 for extensive roof repairs. Every one of the 8,500 glass tiles had to be removed, cleaned, replaced and sealed. Now finally, on Saturday 15th February, the doors will be opened once more onto a better and brighter museum. Most importantly there will no longer be any leaks! This has been a massive renovation project with priceless and delicate specimens requiring storage. A great opportunity to clean and undertake restoration work. There has even been the chance to completely redesign static displays and to take fascinating objects around local schools. Its certainly been an exciting time with long hours and lots of work involved. As well as being an active arthropod research centre, the Hope Entomological Collections are housed in the museum and contain 25,000 arthropod types comprising of over 5 million specimens. There are insects collected by Darwin, Wallace and even Dr. Livingstone's famous tetse fly. The oldest pinned insect in the world is there, a Bath White butterfly collected in 1702 by William Vernon in Cambridgeshire. These collections are vital for research and reference. So why not come along and spend a day at the museum? Submerse yourself in wonder and amazement at the collections. Marvel at the buildings beauty now restored to its former glory when it hosted Charles Darwin's Great Debate in 1860! There is an extremely good permanent exhibit devoted entirely to entomology as well as living displays and the opportunity to handle real live invertebrates. Have a superb family day out - go and immerse yourselves in a really awesome learning zone! Entrance is free but save a penny for a dinosaur cookie in the cafe overlooking the T-Rex. The AK-Poets Fronted by English singer/songwriter David Marx, The AK-Poets is an ever evolving musical vehicle that plays and performs an array of original music. Having already released three albums on the independent Revolver label (which can be heard/purchased via http://davidmarx.bandcamp.com/), the material wavers between the mighty delicate, acoustic and folk induced; lyrically and melodically explosive, while simultaneously drenched in drama and loud (rock'n'roll) truth. Influenced by the likes of Tom Waits, The Beatles and The Clash, the band consists of Marx on vocals and rain'n'napalm infused guitar, former Charred Heart and Trick Baby Pat Luszcz on bass and Black Sheep Apprentice frontman Richard 'Skiddy' Skidmore on drums. Marx has recorded with various members of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band in New York as well as undertaken a considerable amount of session work in London. All upcoming dates can be found on the band's website, two of which include The Swan in Faringdon on Friday May 23rd and Saturday August 16th. www.akpoets.weebly.com Pat Luszcz: 07960 706738 davidmarx@live.co.uk
