The Dog Studio Dog Grooming and Hydrotherapy Centre Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Faringdon Business Breakfast Club With an air of nervous anticipation, we gathered in The Bell for our December meeting which was to include our annual Christmas Quiz. Each year our quizmaster – Jonathan Russell is asked to construct a quiz that is easier than the previous version. Each year he assures us he has taken our request into consideration and found a few more common facts about Christmas. However, I am disappointed to report that his reputation for reaching the more obscure facts and figures associated with the occasion has been preserved! Do you know which country can be credited with the creation of the Christmas beverage, eggnog? Well it is England. The sad thing is that many of us remembered the question from previous quizzes but hardly any of us remembered the answer! Having completed our 60 second round we had the quiz. Sweaty brows and gasps of disbelief rang out as the questions were read to us from a quizmaster with a wry smile on his face. Honesty prevailed, and we marked our own efforts. With a total of fifty (50) marks available the quizmaster diplomatically started gathering the totals from the bottom up. He started with “Who scored less than 10?” and one member raised their hand. He progressed to “Who scored more than 20?” and another member raised their hand. For honesty and cleverness these two individuals won a bottle of wine each. At our next meeting on 7 January 2019, we will be holding our “Why I love what I do” activity where everyone has 2 – 3 minutes to talk about their business or a topic that is important to them in a relaxed and informal manner. Why not get your business off to a flying start in 2019 by coming along. You can book your place by following this link. https://fbbc-networking.co.uk
Ringing the changes for the New Year Now that the New Year has brought us into 2019, we expect a few changes in the Tower. We already have a second learner joining us regularly for Sunday morning service ringing and Monday practice. And one of our ringers whom we have been training since January 2015 is leaving Faringdon. The person leaving, dear readers, has been your faithful correspondent of Faringdon Tower's news for the past 6 months. I expect that someone will step into my place to give you the Tower's news. I will miss All Saints' bell ringers immensely for their helpfulness and dedication to the improvement of my ringing, from when I started to learn four years ago. Jon, Tom and Caroline especially have always been very kind in giving their constructive comments, and my time with the other ringers will remain as precious. Having moved only as far as Abingdon, I will come back occasionally to my original stomping ground. And as the Tower's steeplekeeper, I will maintain the ringing machinery until the Tower's AGM in the spring, by which time we will have installed newly made ropes for all eight bells in the belfry. The bands in Abingdon, at St Helen's and St Nic's, have already welcomed me into their practices and are keen to help me to progress my ringing skills and incorporate my attendance into their Sunday service ringing. I don't know of any other hobby where you can (most times) turn up without introduction and use someone else's kit! If you fancy providing a community service, learning a new skill, making a great sound or being part of a team, just one of these reasons is enough to learn how to ring full-circle bells, and I thoroughly recommend it. Slimmer's are sparkling this New Year! The Faringdon, Stanford in the Vale and Highworth slimming groups are looking forward to a happy New Year and going into Slimming worlds 50th year after losing a combined weight of 169st as part of a challenge to slim down. Members of these Slimming World groups dreamed of a light Christmas and a great start to 2019 when they embarked on their seasonal slim 10 weeks ago. And now their winter weight-loss wishes have come true. The challenge was part of a campaign called “Be Sparkling” this Christmas with Slimming World, which ran across all 18,000 Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland. It aimed to help the organisation’s 900,000 members enjoy their best Christmas and New Year ever. The slimmer's in the Faringdon, Highworth and Stanford groups, launched the campaign in October and set themselves mini targets to achieve by December 25th. Now they’ve thrown a Christmas cracker of a bash to celebrate their success in achieving their goals and staying on track throughout the festive period. Louise Preece, who runs the Highworth and Faringdon groups and Amy Linsey who runs the Stanford in the Vale group, say they are extremely proud of all of the slimmer's. They add: “In October we asked everyone to think about what they wanted to achieve by Christmas – what would be the best Christmas gift they could give to themselves this year – and write it on a special snowflake gift tag. Everyone’s wishes were different, from weight-loss targets or reaching their target weight to fit into a certain outfit, being able to do something with their family for the first time or feeling good about themselves. Whatever it was it helped to keep them focused throughout the run up to Christmas. “The weeks leading up to Christmas are extremely busy for most of us, extra occasions and commitments can play havoc with our regular routines making it harder than ever to manage our weight. Keeping active when the dark, cold nights close in can be a challenge too. Each week in our group we share recipes, advice and ideas for coping with potential pitfalls, from Christmas parties to shopping trips, and, by sharing ideas and keeping each other motivated, members at the Faringdon, Highworth and Stanford in the Vale groups have been able to stay on track and reach their goals.” Sadie, from Faringdon morning group, has lost nearly 2st since the campaign began, and an impressive 5st 11lbs altogether since joining Slimming World in June 2017. During that 18 months, 9 months of this Sadie was pregnant, she continued food optimising through pregnancy with the help and support of group, attending every week with the agreement of her midwife and only missing one week to give birth. Sadie is a true inspiration to her fellow members and we continue to love having her and her new edition in our group. She says: “I love Christmas and New Year and I was determined not to have another year of feeling uncomfortable and out of place at family gatherings and parties with friends. I can’t believe how different I feel and I haven’t had to do anything drastic either, just make small easy changes to my eating and activity levels. I’ve learned how to make healthy choices and I know I’ve got the tools to be slim for life, so I’m confident I’ll be able to keep it up throughout 2019 and beyond. On a cold December morning a group of villagers met on the Jubilee Field in Uffington to witness Tom Scrivens, representing the Faringdon Branch of the Royal British Legion, planting a Rowan Tree commemorating 100 years since the signing of the Armistice of the First World War At the ceremony the Vice-Chair of Uffington Parish Council, Karen Pilcher, spoke briefly about the men from the area who had fought and died in that war. The Vicar of Uffington, The Reverend Jeremy Goulston, led the group in prayer, after which everyone adjourned to the THMH for warming refreshments.

“He who marvels at the beauty of the World in Summer will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in Winter” John Burroughs. Welcome to the first musings of the New Year. Our bird feeders are already up and well-attended, the neat heaps of fallen leaves are being all thrown about by the blackbirds and hedgerow berries and apples are disappearing fast. The owls have been calling around the village and the dawn chorus is being very quietly practiced, ready for the full orchestral performance in the Spring. It will be a year of many changes – I set aside the political ones, to speak of my semi-retirement at the end of March, after 25 years at my own Practice in Stanford and 42 years since qualifying! It’s been a great journey Sarah and I have met many wonderful people and their pets. I wrote previously about StreetVet – one animal insurance company (Animal Friends) donated a cheque for £100,000 to StreetVet this month, as I write. I will be helping them as a professional volunteer in Oxford, accompanied by some understanding clients. I’ll keep you posted. Locum work at my old practice in Wales will be done, as well as working as a volunteer in two friends’ organic farm school for children and young adults with learning difficulties. As many enquiring clients already know, I plan to be an RSPB reserve volunteer warden once I see what time I have spare after March! Thank you for all your support and interest in my new ventures. A recent survey by a big EU animal pharma company, with Ipsos, has focused attention on the unique human-animal bond that we share. With the start of the New Year and new beginnings, I hope that these summarised observations are of interest. The study involved 3000 pet owners across five EU countries, including Britain. 300 cat owners and 300 dog owners. For pet owners without any health issues, ● 96% of dog owners and 91% of cat owners claim that their pet has a positive impact on daily life, with the perceived main benefits as better conscious relaxation (mindfulness), increased opportunities for physical exercise and for 80% of owners, improved quality of life. ● 60% of owners consider their pet as a family member and 30% as a friend or companion ● Closeness or cuddling is part of the daily routine for 80% of respondents ● As for sharing good times together, 66% of owners stated that this was the main motivation to have a pet ● Finally, 68% of cat owners and 78% of dog owners feel very close to their pet Have a safe but happy month, don’t forget Big Garden Birdwatch and keep warm and in great health throughout. Happy New Year. Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

THE KITCHEN DEPOT Chris and Amy Rogers are a very enthusiastic and passionate couple, regarding their new business “The Kitchen Depot”. Their showroom is next to the new Co-op off the roundabout, in Kingston Bagpuize. You will find a wide range of kitchens that will suit all tastes, from contemporary to ultra-modern, there is most definitely one made just for you. Chris has always lived in Oxfordshire, as his father was in the Army. He’s lived in Kidlington and the Witney area and has now settled down in the lovely village of Bampton, with his wife Amy and their daughter Emily, now two years old. Both Chris and Amy previously worked in management, at one of the largest UK retail companies. Having been working there for the last 13 years, Chris decided he needed to change direction, as the job was not family friendly. He found he was not spending very much time at home, with Amy and Emily. He was either driving to different branches or leaving work late due to demand, or finding himself stuck in the busy traffic, either way found he was returning home very late into the night, and leaving early for work again the next day. After making the career changing decision to change trades, he did extensive research, and both decided, kitchens are the heart of the home, where families come together, that’s what he wanted to do. He needed a good team behind him who had the same values as himself, with kitchens that suited everybody’s pocket! Finding the McCay Family run business “The Kitchen Depot” ticked all his boxes. The kitchens are all manufactured in Telford Shropshire England, to the finest German bespoke specifications. Wait till you hear this! Your orders can be delivered in Two Weeks, with only a £100 deposit and full payment the week before installation, then the fitter only requires paying after the kitchen has been fitted! How amazing is that? Another striking feature of “The Kitchen Depot” kitchens is on opening the cabinets, the insides are the same colour as the outsides, gone are the white standard interiors and shelves, they look fantastic, if for some reason you did want them white, then of course this could be done, but personally looking at the kitchens in the showroom they look fantastic with the interiors being the same as the exteriors, brilliant! Offering 130 textures to choose from and benefiting from two generations of knowledge, design, installation and manufacturing of bespoke kitchens, you can’t want for more. If you’re in need of a new kitchen, Chris and Amy Rogers, joined by their colleague Alex Tse in sales, can offer you a kitchen that’s quality and price, outweighing the mass-produced companies. The quality, construction, custom-built, height or depth of the kitchens will convert your house into the home you’ve always dreamed of. The Kitchen Depot offers a free planning and design service, as well as various finance options to help you bring your perfect kitchen to life, with a five-year guarantee. As the December through early January period is often a time for celebration a separate article on sparkling wines “bubbled up” (excuse the pun) in my thoughts. As with most things to do with wine, there is a huge amount of choice in sparkling wines, including sparkling reds, rose and of white wines like chardonnay. SUNDAY - TUESDAY CLOSED For this article, I will focus on the big three, Prosecco, Cava and Champagne. WEDNESDAY 10 - 4:30PM Prosecco comes from northern Italy and is made completely THURSDAY 10 - 4:30PM FRIDAY 10 - 4:30PM differently from the other two. The different production has a SATURDAY 10 - 4:30PM marked difference in the style of the wine, so a Prosecco is light in colour and generally flavour, with just enough to tickle the taste Wedding / Engagement rings buds. Because it is Italian, there are a couple of quality marks Gold . Silver . Diamonds . Pearls . Amber that are applied, DOC and DOCG, where the G guarantees extra Semi-Precious Stones . Made-to-Measure pieces quality as set out in agreed rules and guidelines followed by the We cater for all budgets vineyards. Repairs - On Site Workshop Cava comes from the Catalunya region of Spain and is also a Buy Gold for Cash - Top Prices Paid protected name. It is made using the same basic production method as champagne, but from different grapes. Because there is an ageing process and considerable variation in the various locations you get a broader range of wines, flavours and prices. Some Cava can taste like champagne, but generally these will be the more expensive wines - say £18 - £25 per bottle. Cava has more colour in the glass, pale but distinct. It also has distinct citrus fruits in the flavour. Usually a dry wine (brut) and often with a hint of tart apple in the flavour. There are Reserva and Grand Reserva versions, but I have not seen these in the supermarkets. The wine that first comes to mind and most associated with celebration is champagne. It has dominated this scene for hundreds of years - yes it is that old. Though you would not recognise them as the same drink as tastes have changed over faringdonjewellers.com time. Most champagne is called non vintage, this means that though the bulk of the wine is from a specific year, it is blended with other wines from older years to maintain a specific flavour and style of wine. The wine takes around 3 years from picking to release to the market and has several stages that all the producers will go through. The price range is huge, from £12 to £250 for a single bottle, though most of us will buy at the lower end ! The Aldi and Lidl champagnes really delivered a nice champagne at a fantastic price and win praise from wine writers. But, the flavours of the wine do change and the intensity of the flavours improves as you go up the price range. There are three classifications of the wines in the non vintage world (80%), the standard champagne, which must be made from grapes grown in the specified geographic region, Premier cru from a select group of vineyards and Grand cru - even fewer vineyards. Diggers - Dumpers - Shredders - Floor sanders The key decider could well be, who has the best offers. Everyone Breakers - Wallpaper strippers - Heaters has own brand champagne and they often reduce the price in Dehumidifiers - Concrete mixers & Much more December. Have great fun trying the different sparkling wines and have a www.kinchplanthire.co.uk Old Sawmills Rd, Park Rd, Faringdon, SN7 7DS Very Happy New Year.

Pretty Iconic
By Sali Hughes Pretty Iconic: A Personal Look at the Beauty Products that Changed the World by Sali Hughes So it’s out with the old year and in with the new. 2018 – whether good or bad – is now behind us and we have a chance to shape 2019 into a year for all of us. Speaking personally, it was a year of professional triumph and personal loss. I was blessed to have the chance to know my sister-in-law Maureen, who passed away in March. Her relationship with brother Peter was one that spoke of dedication, humour and devotion, and we miss her madly. As I get older I find the skill that is most relevant, yet sometimes hardest to achieve, is empathy. You truly don’t know another man until you walk a mile in his shoes. But I am just as guilty as many in making snap judgements on the character of others based on fraught circumstance and personal insecurities. On this I strive, in 2019, to be better.

My spell of shingles now thankfully over – and ‘phantom’ itching now over too – I found myself diving into beauty editor Sali Hughes’ masterful exploration of our history of beauty products. Books and beauty products are my twin passions, the thing that I spend most money on and those who have best shaped my history. If we close our eyes, we don’t have to reach that far back to remember those products that brought us the most joy. Mine are mostly perfumes. I remember clearly the smell of Estee Lauder’s Youth Dew perfume on my mother, the mystique of Chanel No 5 (though I prefer the brittle freshness of No 19) and two Cacherel limited edition scents circa 1995/1996 that I frantically sought out on eBay to seek to recapture that initial rush of inspiration that they gave me. What makes Hughes’ book great is that she doesn’t concentrate on those products personally relevant to her. The whole pantheon of beauty 101 is in this book – face creams, shower and bath products, tweezers and pore-strips. What also makes it great is the personality that shines through the book; Hughes is a humorous and candid tour guide on a journey that will lead us all somewhere. Seek this book out if you’re a beauty product freak. Even if you’re not, it’s a great romp through history.

Chris Lewis Electrical is situated opposite our very own Tesco on Park Road Faringdon, I don’t think for one minute you could get more local than that? Have a look and you will see his white sign written van parked at number 52 Park Road! Chris is assisted by his wife Lisa who takes care of the office, administration side of things, an important part of the business. They have two little ones, Megan aged four and Ben now two, who keep them on their toes when not working! Chris grew up in Cornwall but due to the lack of work in the area decide to move away from his family home. Chris qualified as an electrician, doing his training as an apprentice for Southern Electric, covering a wide range of electrical work from small domestic, complete re wires, industrial and solar PV, he strives to provide a quality service, leaving satisfied customers, who can call him anytime with questions or queries, after the job is finished. A very important positive, with the way Chris works, is his cleanliness and tidiness, you will have no evidence of a team working in your home or business when the job is done. How many of you have experienced very messy workmen and know what a blessing it is, to have someone who cares about the condition he leaves your home in? Chris arrived in Faringdon from Bicester which is where he met his lovely wife Lisa. At the time, he was working with Solar installations, when the government pulled out of the grants and the business dipped, Chris decided it was now the time, to go out on his own. In 2012 Chris Lewis Electrical was formed and has been busy for the last 6 years, Chris has many references now, available to yourselves backing up the quality work he supplies, he is also on www.checkatrade.com/chrislewiselectrical Chris will explain in layman’s terms exactly what he is doing and why, so you have a better understanding of what has gone wrong and what is needed to be done to fix the problem. With Chris fixing your electrical problems you have assurance on his workmanship, leaving you and your home or business in his very safe hands. Now joining Chris is apprentice Bradley Burton who is 17 years old. Chris has employed him this year as he believes strongly in giving this opportunity to Bradley, to complete a proper apprenticeship, he is also embedding his values and work quality with him. THE MAGIC OF INDIA The ancient town of Hampi lies in the heart of South India’s Deccan Plateau. Hampi is remote. It's an arduous (but stunning) 9 hour bus journey from anywhere significant, only the determined and the adventurous reach there. Those that do are richly rewarded with days spent cycling around the Vigayanagara kingdom’s 12th century monuments (which span 20 kilometres), exploring the surrounding boulder-strewn scenery - an otherworldly landscape accented with emerald rice paddies and templecrested hills, or taking the coracle ferry (a tiny round rowing boat made of reeds) across the Tungabadhra river to “the Island” - to hang out with the long term hippies and remember the art of doing nothing. Hampi has been etched in my heart since I first went there 15 years ago when I arrived at midnight on the back of a royal enfield. An impulsive sunset departure from Goa, followed by a cold but glorious journey through the forested hills of eastern Karnataka (guided by the light of a full moon due to failed headlights) - and an arrival that serendipitously coincided with Hampi’s biggest religious festival was a recipe for magic. Thousands of pilgrims had set up camp all along the main bazaar, some sleeping under blankets on the ground, some cooking over small fires, many pouring into 7th Vitthala temple to light butter lamps and perform Puja (prayer) ceremonies. Hampi is now an important place to me in a more solid sense - it is where my husband Hari is from, it is a second home to us and it is always a privilege to introduce it to people on our South India tours when we stay in a wonderful eco resort on the banks of the Tungabadhra. Another “home from home” for me and a place of deep magic is the lake-side town of Pushkar. Pushkar is one of India’s seven holy towns and home to the only Brahma temple in India. When I first visited aged 18, I fell in love with it’s charming lake and surrounding ring of whitewashed temples, with its colourful market and peaceful energy. I rode camels into the desert, climbed Savritti mountain to watch sunset, drank chai with holy men and ended up staying for a month with a wonderful family I met who ran a guest house. To this day I have an Indian “Mama” and several Indian “brothers” and when we take our groups to Pushkar they are always welcomed into their home for chai and food - like my extended family. Lotus India Adventures will be visiting Hampi during it’s Undiscovered South India tour running in October 2019 and Pushkar during its Hidden Rajasthan tour in January 2020. For full tour details please visit INDIA TOURS on our website (thelotusretreat.com) or contact carrie at carrie@thelotusretreat.com.

Should I Change My Estate Agent?
Instructing an estate agent is perhaps like embarking on any relationship; a confidence in the future without a thought that you might need to look for an alternative arrangement. When you sign on the dotted line, your expectation is for a flurry of eager buyers, a sale agreed and a move wrapped up in no time. However, particularly in a challenging market such as the one we find ourselves in, less may have happened than you anticipated. The hoped for viewings haven’t materialised, and you’re glancing at the phone, hoping for what has now at best become an occasional call. When you do speak with your agent, there is a now singular piece of advice - reduce the price. All well and good if this is part of a pre agreed marketing strategy, less so if pricing is now all they seem interested in. One of the main reasons people give when speaking with us about changing their agent is frustration with the lack of communication, pressure to reduce the asking price and the overall lack of interest compared with the start of things. Finding yourself in this position, what can you do about it?
Firstly, if you’re still on good terms and you feel that they should be given another chance, arrange to meet your agent for a frank and open exchange of views. Tell them how you feel. Ask them what new strategy they could put in place without reducing the price and what they can do to refresh marketing. Make it clear how you want them to communicate with you and, that unless there’s a marked improvement, you’ll be looking elsewhere. However, if you’re thoroughly fed up, and once you have consulted and decided upon an alternative firm, there’s a process to go through to make a change. Check your existing agent’s agreement, as there is often a minimum period during which you have to sell through them alone, and serve the required amount of notice. If you’re really not happy about something that your agent has or hasn’t done, by speaking to them and perhaps formally complaining in writing, they may release you from the contract straight away. Once you have given notice, let your new agent know. They can then start preparing to put their plan into action. It can also be a good idea to take your home off the market whilst preparations are made. This will help create freshness to the marketing put in place by your new estate agent and enhance activity; particularly if you have decided on a new price as well. More often than not, a change, a fresh approach and working with the right agent will result in a sale. If you’d like to know more, we can help. Simeon Spencer.

1000 Rather than giving something up for New Year why not make a positive resolution? My suggestion for this if you’re a whisky lover would be to go and visit a distillery – or, if you’ve already done that, then to go and find some new ones to visit. This is because, for me, distilleries and the people who create whisky are the very heart and soul of the amber nectar, and visiting them brings whisky to life in so many ways. Although the malt whisk(e)y production process is basically the same in all distilleries by visiting different ones you’ll get to understand how the influence of fermentation time, still shape, cask type etc result in the vast variation of expressions that exist and you’ll also hear some wonderful stories from the unique characters to be found in the whisky world. Whether or not you’ve visited a distillery before then always of interest are the ‘farm size’ distilleries, as you will be able to see all of the various processes in one or two rooms and this will make it much easier to follow the flow of what happens. Arran is one such distillery, as you can stand in the middle of the production area and see the mash tun, the washbacks, the stills, condensers and spirit safe, all without moving from the spot. Add to this a tasty dram to sample at the end of the tour, a decent café, friendly tour guides and the chance of seeing an eagle and you have the complete package!
HIGHWORTH TRAVEL INDEPENDENT LUXURY TRAVEL SPECIALIST
For a more local experience take a run up to the Cotswolds Distillery near Shipston-on-Stour. There, not only can you see the whole whisky making process in one area but you can also find out how gin is made and see the beautiful Holstein still where their gin is produced using a unique recipe that includes locally grown botanicals. It’s a fascinating place to visit that gives you a great chance to get up close and personal with the production process and we’ve always found the team there friendly, knowledgeable and professional. There is a lovely tasting room where you can sample the distillery’s award winning whisky and gin after a tour but make sure you book your visit in advance as tickets sell out very quickly. With distilleries in so many countries nowadays, and new ones opening all the time, once you embark on visiting them it becomes an ongoing journey of discovery. The captivating mix of that wonderfully unique smell that you only get at a distillery, the beautiful wood and copper, the age old processes, the scenic locations you may not otherwise visit, the social history that is tied up with whisky making, and the sharing of a dram and a joke with some very interesting characters becomes quite addictive – take my word for it!
