07710 170838 Morris Dancing in the Vale
Wishing Everyone A Very Happy 2017, Lou
Icknield Way dancing in Westminster For 500 hundred years men of the Vale of White Horse have been morris dancing. A number of the towns and villages had a morris side but most had died out by the beginning of the 20th century, notable exceptions being Abingdon and Bampton which have a continuous tradition. As part of the post-war folk revival reconstituted and new sides sprang up, of which Icknield Way Morris Men is one. Based in Wantage, but drawing dancers from a wider area, IWMM has been performing traditional local dances for over 50 years. The side dances mid-week at Vale and Downs pubs from May to September plus a number of weekend appearances at local shows and festivals and also at events further afield. As well as entertaining dancing IWMM is noted for its sociability before, during and after performances, in particular its song and music sessions. Aprés morris music session with a guest side Over the winter the side practices every Wednesday – 8pm at Grove Scout Hut (OX12 0FL) and recruits are urged to come along and give morris dancing a try. Age or (lack of) fitness is no bar, the exuberance of young lads can be matched by the craft and cunning of senior gentlemen, so long as you are young at heart you will fit in with Icknield Way. If you really can’t dance but can play an instrument then there is also a place for you. IWMM gives recruits a warm welcome and works hard to ensure that they enjoy the dancing and music and, most importantly, the social atmosphere that distinguishes this side. For more information on IWMM visit – www.icknieldwaymorrismen.org.uk www.facebook.com/IcknieldWayMM - or contact Jonathan on 07805 215468. The side looks forward to meeting you.

WHO’S NEXT?
Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk The Fairford and Lechlade Business Awards are now in their tenth year and to mark this milestone there will be a special tenth Anniversary Gala Dinner at The Venue at Cotswold Hoburne, South Cerney on Saturday 28th January 2017. More information is available from www.flbc.org.uk or admin@flbc.org.uk or by ringing 01285 712150. Good luck to all those who are nominated or decide to put themselves forward. Let’s see if we can improve on last year’s successes. And finally, a happy and prosperous 2017 to all readers.
Business Update Faringdon was really bustling in the run up to Christmas. There were several town centre events including late night openings, “Festive Faringdon” and a Christmas Market which included our French twin town hosting a very successful stall selling their delightful French produce. Hopefully they will be back next year with other European vendors peddling their home produce while border free trade still exists. Whilst we have little or no control over the “Brexit” deal, we do have a degree of control over planning policy now that Faringdon has overwhelmingly accepted its very own Neighbourhood Plan; in the recent referendum over 90% of voters were in favour. This plan will dovetail into the Vale of White Horse District Council’s Local Plan and should ensure communities are more protected from speculative development. The Local Plan report can be read by visiting www.whitehorsedc.gov.uk/localplan. Once the local plan is approved, the council can use both plans to determine planning applications throughout the district. As a result, the Faringdon Chamber of Commerce see this, as an opportunity to attract new businesses to the town and to help to nurture existing ones looking to grow. Having land identified for employment should help us to accommodate these expanding businesses, which in turn will provide local jobs not only during the construction phase but will also enhance the longer term employment prospects for our expanding community. If you have any thoughts, comments or ideas on this subject, please contact the Faringdon Chamber of Commerce.

REGENT CINEMA Wednesday 4th January - Bright Star (PG) (Biography, Drama, Romance - 2009) London 1818: a secret love affair begins between 23 year old English poet, John Keats, and the girl next door, Fanny Brawne, an outspoken student of fashion. This unlikely pair started at odds; he thinking her a stylish minx, she unimpressed by literature in general. It was the illness of Keats's younger brother that drew them together. Keats was touched by Fanny's efforts to help and agreed to teach her poetry. By the time Fanny's alarmed mother and Keats's best friend Brown realised their attachment, the relationship had an unstoppable momentum. Intensely and helplessly absorbed in each other, the young lovers were swept into powerful new sensations, "I have the feeling as if I were dissolving", Keats wrote to her. Together they rode a wave of romantic obsession that deepened as their troubles mounted. Only Keats's illness proved insurmountable. White Port & 2017! Kick off the New Year with White Port… As the Festive Season fades and we enter a New Year, it’s always great to take up the challenge of trying something new, which now leads on to something quite unique – white Port. A well-known exporter of the luscious wines produced in Oporto, in northern Portugal, was once quoted in 1901 as saying “the first duty of Port is to be red.” That may well have been the sentiment at the time and is mostly true today where over 90 percent of the Port wines produced are exactly that — red. But when one doesn’t feel like the heavy, highly alcoholic Port wines, there is another option offered in the Port ‘family’. White Port is made the same way as the traditional red sibling and starts out as a simple white wine produced from a variety of indigenous Portugese white wine grapes that, most probably, you’ve never heard of — varieties like Donzelinho Branco, Esgana-Cäo, Folgasäo. Gouveio, Malvasia Fino, Rabigato, and Viosinho. Each wine ‘house’ (called ‘quintas’) produces their own style of White Port utilising a blend of these grape varieties to make their respective house style. After being blended, the fermentation is stopped by adding grape spirits (like brandy) which kills the yeast and leaves the desired amount of sugar for the level of sweetness desired. While most white wines are in the 12-14 percent level of alcohol, White Port with the brandy added reaches 16 to 18 percent alcohol. The flavours most commonly associated with White Port is nuttiness, honey nectar and caramel, leading onto tangy acidity with citrus and a peachy or apricot fruitiness. Versions of white Port are made with different grapes in California, Australia and elsewhere, although as with red Port, authentic white Port is only made in the Douro Valley in Portugal. To drink: Drink white Port chilled straight up in a white wine glass, or pour equal parts white Port and tonic or soda water in a cocktail glass and garnish with lime. Sweet white Port is ideal for sangria—macerate the fruit in white Port before mixing with a bottle of white wine, or substitute white Port for the wine altogether. Unopened white Port will keep a few years, or opened and refrigerated up to a month. · Accompaniments: Serve dry white Port with almonds, hard cheese, stone fruits, pâté or sushi, and sweet white Port with a light dessert such as sponge cake or a meringue shell filled with fresh fruit. · Cook: Add dry white Port to potato or seafood chowder or in place of white wine in any recipe to add depth and a nutty flavour. Barros White Port NV Oporto, Portugal 19.5% abv £15.99 Den Boer Wines Produced from the grape varieties Malvasia Fina, Rabigato, Verdelho and Viosinho in equal parts. Sweet on the palate, with floral notes, citrus entwined with nuttiness on the lengthy finish.

‘Eileen’ By Ottessa Moshfegh
I was lucky this month to have come across a copy of Barbara Leaming’s long out-of-print biography of Rita Hayworth entitled If This Was Happiness which I gobbled up in more or less a single sitting. Portrayed on the screen as the ‘Love Goddess’ in such films as Gilda, The Lady From Shanghai and Blood & Sand, Rita’s life was anything but happy. Between the pages of this riveting book, we learn of abusive relationships, low self-esteem, her crippling shyness and her eventual tragic slide into dementia. If you can find a copy, I highly recommend it. One of the highlights of my reading month was being sent the full Man Booker Prize shortlist, which I’ve been slowly working my way through. I started with Graeme Macrae Burnet’s His Bloody Project. A few weeks ago Waterstone’s Oxford had a full window display dedicated to this novel complete with suitably bloody sheets, so I was intrigued to find out what awaited me. His Bloody Project is the story of Roderick Macrae, a crofter in the hamlet of Culduie, on trial for the murder of his neighbour, the cruel Lachlan Mackenzie. The story is told through a series of witness and expert testimonies as well as through the eyes of the defendant himself. The writing is masterful but the book is extremely slow going with no real reward for committing to it for 280 pages. I fortunately cannot say the same about Eileen, the first novel from American author Ottessa Moshfegh. Prison secretary Eileen Dunlop lives a hellish existence between a job she is indifferent to, and a grubby home life with her alcoholic ex-policeman father. When the elegant and urbane counsellor Rebecca Saint John arrives at the prison, Eileen sees her chance to escape her humdrum life with this kindred spirit. She’s not to know that things are not exactly going to work out that way. Moshfegh’s skill as a novelist is revealed in the tightly woven narrative, the acute sense of tension she creates and the way she makes a sympathetic protagonist out of the highly undesirable Eileen. I found this one an enjoyable, unsettling read that hurtles you into a different world, transported by a writer who is definitely going places. I’m looking forward to exploring the rest of the Booker list in due course.

December Ramblings!

Welcome to the New Year; so this is 2017 and what will be different about it? We can all play our small part in it to make this year a year of tolerance, understanding, compassion, consideration of others and of the best possible welfare standards for our own pets and for farm animals. I will always remember the parts played in wildlife conservation and awareness by the likes of Sir David Attenborough, Jane Goodall and Brian Blessed, to name a few great people known for putting animals up there first. Will 2017 be a special year when a family member gets offered an apprenticeship or able to pursue a career via college or university? Perhaps they’ll be one of our students who saw practice with us here in Stanford? We all wish them well! A touch of our veterinary world was open to members of the public visiting the Countryfile Live event at Blenheim in the Summer. The RCVS stand was designed as a veterinary practice. Special models were available for young children to “operate on” by keyhole surgery. We can’t offer that here but we do welcome work experience and extra mural study students whenever possible. Driving about the area this dark time of year involves passing walkers, with or without dogs, runners, cyclists and horse riders. Can I make another annual plea for road safety – as well as keeping a wary eye out on approaching verges that may contain wildlife hazards, PLEASE wear light or Hi-Viz clothing. A white dog on the road with a late-seen dark-clothed owner on the verge doesn’t seem fair! But, according to Countryfile’s late last year’s program, despite high visibility clothing and lights, on horse and rider, serious accidents still occur even to Police horses. The Police Think Horse campaign would like all drivers to THINK HORSE, THINK 15mph. The British Horse Society (BHS) has campaigned for the minimum distance AWAY from horse and rider to be 2 meters at a passing speed of between 0 and no more than 15mph. Over 4 thousand riders a year take high quality BHS road safety awareness courses, to try to prepare themselves and their mount for road work. Prepare themselves to be safe in what they wear or display, get into the right position on the road, never two horses side by side. A horse is a flight animal and will dart away from what we see as minor things – a bag flapping in the hedge or a bird flying out – and this can be into the road lane. Horse riders are advised by the BHS to dismount and control the horse better if he or she gets fractious or nervous about anything alongside or ahead. Most riders will acknowledge safe passage to drivers – in a spirit of tolerance and understanding, goodwill like this will spread courtesy to both parties at all other occasions in the future. A recent AA survey quoted on the programme had 8% of drivers saying that they didn’t know how to pass a horse and 6% had experiences near misses. Our pets always have the capacity to make us laugh, cry or amaze us. The big insurer PetPlan have an article on cat burglars, and why it may be that cats do “borrow” articles or have the urge to eat the inedible (called “pica”). http://blog.petplan.co.uk/10/2013/behaviour/does-your-pet-like-to-pinch/ In a separate newspaper article, one particular cat, called Paddy, has devoted so much time and effort into perfecting this talent, that he has his own page in the local newspaper. The Newmarket cat who hit the press in December has collected, amongst other trophies, 25 plant pots and an orchid, complete and still in its pot. Some of the items brought or dragged to the back door have to be photographed and then posted to Facebook, to reunite items with local owners http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/local-news/newmarket-catburglar-caught-stealing-12213070 In the interests of space, for those of you with internet access and some spare time over the holidays, with more feline curiosity, there’s a LOT of legend here – and the critique lower down the page is very interesting! http://www.barnburghandharlington.co.uk/historycatman.html May we thank you for supporting our local Practice charities; some charities will have given us items for sale, others literature for distributing. Trindledown (NAWT), Sunshine CAT rescue, Medical Detection Dogs (we hope to sponsor and visit a puppy in Spring this year) plus arrangements for one other, the Children’s Charity at the John Radcliffe (a small tribute to the loving care given to our Grandson, Charlie, received last year for the two weeks in their care), to be completed this year. Thank you for following this ramble. Do enjoy a happy, healthy, fulfilling and prosperous New Year and see you next month – lighter evenings, snow drops and St Valentine’s Day lie ahead!! Meet Claire, owner, founder and paranormal investigator of Shadows of the Night as well as business owner new to Faringdon, Vintage Goth Shadows, 8 London Street Faringdon. Claire Marie is the UK's leading female paranormal investigator and owner of Shadows of the Night Paranormal Events. I have been interested in the paranormal world since I was a child and have always believed that there was something out there, now I finally have the chance to share my experiences with you! My journey began over 20 years ago, as a child I had always felt different, I was very intrigued by the paranormal, after hearing so many stories. One especially at the very young age of 7, I over heard a conversation between my mum and a friend, they were talking about how she had to move to a temporary house, as her's was extremely haunted and things had turned quite bad there! My mum tried to tell me to go away and play so they could carry on the conversation! But no, I was too intrigued! During school holidays as a child I spent a lot of my time having days out at old castles or picnics at old ruins, I was always the kid hanging out in old derelict buildings and just spending hours and hours wanting to get evidence. So many years later I am still hanging out in these old places but this time as a paranormal investigator and leading my team through the night at haunted locations all over the UK. Over the years I have worked along side some well known names in the paranormal field, learning a lot from these guys! As for scariest places or experiences? I hate to say this but I'm actually not scared of anything! More intrigued and fascinated, not just with the paranormal side but also the whole history of the locations and areas I work in. After moving south from Newcastle this Geordie girl plans to share all her experiences and set up many new investigations locally as well as sharing all my adventures here with you, old and new! We kick start 2017 off at Oxford Castle Friday 13th January! What to expect on the evening... You will be very much a part of the team on this event, Taking part in some intense vigils, and being able to use the teams paranormal or ghost hunting equipment. A tour of the location will be undertaken, all the lights are turned off, then we lead you into the darkness as we explore the unknown, we’ll take you on a journey that you’ll never forget! Also in 2017 I will be holding Victorian séance ( Houdini style) something fun & quirky and of course, very mysterious! These will be held at my shop, Vintage Goth Shadows at 8 London Street, Faringdon! Catering for private parties of 10, weekends or weeknights, Which will go on for approximately 2hrs with food and refreshments. During some of these occasions I will have guest appearances, with well known celebrity names off the TV paranormal world.

Faringdon Business Group formalises with aim of raising profile of local businesses The Faringdon Business Group (FBG) formalised as a not for profit trade association in September 2016 with the aim of actively promoting a vibrant and prosperous business community in Faringdon and its surrounding villages. FBG was initially set up as a Facebook page three years ago by local business owner and management consultant Melanie Lane,to enable Faringdon’s business community to connect and network with other sole traders and businesses in the area with the aim of sharing information and professional support. The main objective of the FBG will be to offer member representation on both a local and national level and increased access to information distributed by public entities such as local town and county councils, educational, research and business organisations and associations, and corporations, that will affect them, and the future of their business. Inaugural committee members include Chairperson Kiera Bentley, Vice Chair & Treasurer Paul Hukins, and Secretary Melanie Lane. Commenting on the formalization of the group Kiera said; “Faringdon businesses have been under-represented in the public forum for too long. The membership of the FBG is extremely diverse from single kitchen table enterprises and solo consultants to SMEs, from retailers to service providers across all industries.” She continued; “By recognising this group as a formal business community, we will now be able to consult and engage with formal entities such as councils, and research groups, and give every business owner in Faringdon and the surrounding area a voice on decisions that will impact both them and the wider business community.” There are no membership fees required to join the FBG and no need to attend formal member meetings as all information will be shared via the current Facebook page. If you’re a local business owner interested in joining the group, and want to read more about FBG’s constitution, goals and objectives, you can do so by visiting www.facebook.com/faringdonbusinessgroup. PAT ELMORE RBA SCULPTOR Things You Can Do To Be Healthy In 2017 No more excuses, now is the time to make a difference to your health and well-being. If you want success Keep it simple. Stick to what works for you. Avoid being influenced by the January fad diet market. Think healthy meals rather than low calorie, fat free, smoothie detox etc. Remember, it’s about long term healthy habits! Avoid being tempted by short term diets. By sticking to what you know you will stay on course with your health and weight-loss plan. Commit to healthy meals. Choose healthy breakfasts, lunches and evening meals that you can prepare easily. Buy good ingredients and keep the fridge and cupboards stocked at all times. When dining out make the same good choices and eat meals based on lean protein and vegetables. Keep it pleasurable. Choose great food and have the pleasure of eating it. Healthy eating should not be about going hungry. Choose good foods that make eating both enjoyable and nutritious. Eating quality and great tasting food can improve how you feel and perform in any activity. Nutrition is key. No matter what your goals, nutrition is the key to success when it comes to any plan, whether it’s for fat loss, general health or muscle gain. Plan your meals. Planning your meals and snacks in advance will help you to keep you on track when you start to waiver. It also helps to reduce waste and so save you money. Create a menu plan for a few days, a week or even a month in advance. Stick to your list when shopping for food. When planning your meals and snacks aim to choose items from the 5 food groups: vegetables; fruit; high fibre whole grains, lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds and beans. Choose quality milk, yogurt, cheeses. Once you have decided on your meals and snacks, write a list of everything that you need to buy and stick to it. Always avoid shopping when hungry, it will only lead to buying extra foods that may not be quite so good for you. Add flavour to satisfy. Flavour your meals using herbs and spices, instead of using bought sauces that contain additives and extra salt and sugar. A healthy plate is one that you are going to enjoy and which will make you feel better. Aim to fill half of your plate with vegetables, quarter with lean protein and only a quarter with carbohydrates (make sure the carbs you choose have a lower GI, high fibre content and as many vitamins and minerals as possible – ‘smart carbs’ – like sweet potatoes, brown rice etc.) Keeping it simple can be fun and easy. Over complicating your meals will only make it more difficult to stick to your plan. Remember to exercise too. Keeping your body active is the best way to stay alert and energetic. Kick your feelgood endorphins into high gear by doing some physical activity, such as walking, strength training or cardio a few times a week. Wishing you a Happy, Healthy New Year - Rich Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com

CATS makes a purr-fect come back It’s been an incredible 20 years since Suzy Bloom starred in Andrew LloydWebber’s multiple award winning musical CATS, but she chose to re-live the magic recently when she travelled to Stagecoach Faringdon to pass on her experience and knowledge to the star students. Award winning principal James Barker organised the day in which over 50 children aged 6-14 were treated to first-hand training with Suzy who has been performing on stage and screen for over 30 years. Suzy Bloom said of the day: ‘What an absolute pleasure it was to hold a CATS Masterclass at Stagecoach Faringdon last Saturday, the students really were a joy to teach. They were so engaged, picking up a challenging routine and putting their all into their performance. It was truly inspiring. I was very impressed at how well the day was organized by James, who was both highly professional and lots of fun! Keep up the excellent work and break a leg next term.’ Principal James Barker commented: ‘I am absolutely thrilled with the response so far, we have literally had an 'award winning' term! All of the students have incredible potential but most of all, every week we’re singing and dancing and having a good time.’ Parents were invited to an exclusive performance following the training where students demonstrated what they had learnt in a dazzling showcase of their skills. James continues: ‘It has been a pleasure watching my students grow in confidence each week, with parents saying they can't believe the increasing confidence in their children. Parents have even said that they are doing better at school because of Stagecoach. We have so much to look forward to next year, including a Shaftesbury Theatre performance in the West End. Every term has a new and fun project for the students to focus on. I am so proud to be part of Stagecoach and to be leading such an outstanding team offering this fantastic experience to the families of Faringdon and West Oxfordshire.’ Previous activities at the school have included fundraising performances such as their adaptation of multiple award winning musical Wicked in aid of Children in Need. Stagecoach Faringdon are part of a network of more than 600 part-time Schools Worldwide. Early Stages classes are available for children aged 4 to 6 and Main Stages classes take place for 6 to 18 year olds. For more information please visit the website at www.stagecoach.co.uk/faringdon or call 01367 240663 or 07825 215163.
