WHO’S NEXT?
Business Update
A Happy New Year to all readers! We trust you had a joyful Christmas and are full of good intentions to see your New Year’s resolutions through. Well, until the end of the month at least. What a fantastic end to the year it was, with the Market Place buzzing with fantastic events and the word was around the local towns and villages that it all happens in Faringdon. One such comment overheard, “You have music festivals in the summer, beer festival and fireworks in the autumn, a great community feel to the switching on of the Christmas lights and now a nativity play in the town centre with real camels, our town doesn’t have any thing like this”. Lets hope this reputation continues to grow throughout the coming year. And there is plenty going on in 2018 to ensure that these successes will continue. March sees the 800th anniversary of Faringdon’s market charter. There will be an acknowledgement of this on the 6th March at the regular farmer’s market, with a larger scale celebration in May. More details will be released soon. The Town Team will be changing tack this year. In order to implement certain elements of the Faringdon business plan it will be promoting the extensive tourism offerings in an attempt to increase footfall and raise the profile of our town. There are also rumours that Faringdon may participate in the Cotswold Hare trail, which will attract further visitors from afar. Of course, there will Call Trish: 01367 820060 be a steady influx of residents this year as the town grows and it will be interesting to find out their thoughts on the community Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS they are joining. Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk It is a shame to see another stalwart of the town departing and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Deacons for all their support of various initiatives, the Town Team, Chamber Deacons are one of the few businesses who step forward to help of Commerce and other organisations taken on over the years. others. Finally, an update on the Community Ball, which took place last November – whilst final figures are yet to be released, it looks like this event raised over £6,000 for local charities. Next year’s event will be on Saturday, 17th November, so make a note now! 579798

There was a certain amount of excitement balanced by nervousness as we gathered in The Bell for our December meeting. This is the meeting where we hold our annual Christmas Quiz and our quizmaster – Jonathan Russell has a reputation reaching the more obscure facts and figures associated with the occasion. Fighting back a nasty bug he delivered the quiz but decided not to stay. Was this a signal that the quiz would be even more demanding? Having completed our 60 second round including a version of the 12 days of Christmas based on legal terms and practices we arranged ourselves into teams of three if for no other reason than the fact that there were three bottles of wine as the prize donated by our quizmaster. Well we did have fun and even if the scores were unlikely to qualify anyone for Mastermind the winners were duly rewarded with their prizes. As this was an early in the month meeting the answers did prove useful at subsequent networking Christmas quizzes. Some forthcoming events that were announced included the Rotary Club’s annual event where Thomas The Tank Engine travels the area giving out presents, and the Fairford and Lechlade Business Club’s annual awards competition that is open to all Faringdon businesses. At our next meeting on 8 January 2018, we will hear a presentation from Jack FM on the advantages of radio advertising. Do you find yourself thinking that you’d like to try a different whisky but then every time you buy another bottle the pull of the familiar is just too strong, despite that niggling doubt that perhaps you are missing out on something which might be even better, or perhaps more suited to particular times and/or moods? Well, as it’s January then our advice would be to listen to that inner voice and let your resolution be new year, new whisky! Rather like tastes in food tastes in whisky can change over time, and although from early experience you may think that you hate peaty whiskies when you come to try them again you could find that you rather enjoy the extra complexity that smoke can bring. The best way to start off is with something that just has a gentle whiff of smoke, such as Jura Superstition, the Caol Ila Moch or the superb Springbank 15 year old. And if you enjoy any of those then you may want to progress on to something with a medium peating level (the Ailsa Bay is an ideal candidate) and the next step from there is to become a full blown peathead with an addiction to Ardbeg! Similarly, people often shy away from sherry cask matured whiskies, perhaps finding the tannins from the European wood that give those big flavours too overwhelming. However, as the influence of the cask varies with the length of time the whisky has been exposed to it then the age of the whisky you choose can make a subtle difference. The Glenfarclas 10 year old is a completely different beast to the Glenfarclas 15 year old because it is in cask for a shorter time, creating a lighter whisky that some people find far more to their liking. Another good alternative is to try expressions where both sherry and bourbon casks have been used for maturation. This produces some luscious results, with the bourbon wood softening the whisky and adding vanilla notes and the sherry wood adding richness and spiciness. The Balblair 1990 and1999, the Balvenie 17 year old Doublewood, and the Tomatin 12 year old are all great examples of this style. For something that combines some smoke with both bourbon and sherry cask maturation then an expression from the Benromach distillery fits the bill well. Even though the majority of their whiskies are not marketed as being peated they often have a pronounced hint of smoke and this trait comes not only from a little peated barley being used but also from tweaks like letting the distillation run a little longer than is usual before making the spirit cut. Finally, if you do want to try a different style we usually have a sample available to taste that will fit the bill, so be brave and make this the year you go for some bold new choices of whisky! STUDENTS TREAD THE BOARDS ON LEGENDARY LONDON STAGE STUDENTS from Stagecoach Faringdon stepped into the spotlight last weekend when they got the chance to perform at The Shaftesbury Theatre in London’s West End. As part of the nationwide Stagecoach Performing Arts initiative, the children joined talent from across the UK and performed a beautiful piece from the classic musical ‘Singing in the Rain’. The iconic Shaftesbury Theatre has played host to many musicals over the years including Hairspray, Rock of Ages and Motown the Musical, and now students from 16 Stagecoach schools across the country entertained friends and family as they got a taste of West End stardom. Stagecoach Performing Arts Faringdon Principal, James Barker says: “For the children to be able to perform at the Shaftesbury Theatre is a dream come true, whether they dream of being West End stars or they dance, sing and act for fun. Performances like this are a huge confidence booster and there is a great sense of camaraderie amongst the pupils. It was a magical day for all concerned, with the students gaining the wonderful experience of performing in the West End. The pupils put all their efforts into an astounding performance, which had everyone on their feet cheering.” Stagecoach Performing Arts Faringdon is part of a network of more than 650 extra-curricular Performing Arts Schools worldwide. Stagecoach aims to make a difference in its students lives by teaching Creative Courage for Life and many children have gone on to study and work in Performing Arts from blockbuster films to countless roles in local theatre productions. Early Stages classes are available for children aged four to six and Main Stages classes take place for six to 18 year olds every weekend. Welcome to 2018! What are you going to do differently this year? This is a time when we reflect on the year just gone and think about what we are going to do differently, how we are going to behave, how we are going to look and maybe how we would like to feel. It’s a good thing to take time to address the parts of our lives that need work. From my point of view, I would say “that’s wonderful!” as I like to help my clients reach their goals. Over the Christmas period I reflected about the areas where some of us find difficulty. These can be many, and we often end up in the same old cycle of broken resolutions and low self-esteem. These feelings perpetuate so many of our problems such as being overweight or lacking the confidence to do the things in life we want to do. Tackling what we find difficult, sometimes head on, can be the only way to make lasting change. Practical changes we can make often involve simple adjustments to our daily routine such as drinking more water and eating more vegetables, cutting out junk food, reducing unnecessary snacking and moving more. When trying to help people with their wellness plan my primary aim is to encourage healthy eating and drinking, starting with small adjustments. However these simple changes can be hard to make – we literally have to ‘detox’ from sugar and change ingrained habits which affect the way we shop for and prepare food. On top of that, I am quite often met with comments like “drinking water is boring” or “eating healthily is uninteresting”. Personally I don’t think it is or at least it doesn’t have to be! There is a wealth of healthy cookery books out there, you may even have been given one for Christmas, If so please keep it in the kitchen and use it! One of my resolutions is to cook a new meal each week which includes what some might consider to be boring vegetables. It’s a small goal but will hopefully give me a wider repertoire of dishes and ingredients that I can re-use making it easier to eat well in the future. Variety is key! Is there something small that you can change or add to your daily routine? A few more steps to burn off more calories, morning stretches to improve flexibility or adding an extra piece of fruit to your diet. Tell me what you’ve chosen and we can share our progress. Above all, let’s make 2018 different by appreciating the good things which are already in our lives, and by trying to share these with others to hopefully bring some joy into their lives too. (Once I’ve mastered one of my new dishes I’ll invite friends round to share it.) We might even think better about ourselves, which in turn puts us into a better frame of mind to successfully keep to our resolutions! CHANGE TODAY and TRANSFORM TOMORROW Happy 2018, Rich.

Hello and welcome to the New Year – it’s challenges, it’s triumphs, it’s successes and the bringer of mindfulness, good mental health and true happiness. I hope that I find you in the best of health – or if you are not at your best, that you have the support of family, caring professionals, your community and that of your pet companions. I hope this piece will bring you cheer? Listening to a BBC Radio 4 broadcast recently. There was a discussion between two clinical experts in cancer and medical cancer counselling a very experienced consultant and very experienced specialist nurse. It has been found that clinical experience, coupled with a confidence derived from that experience and constant reassessment and empathy of every patent’s situation, passes that confidence on to the patient. Sometimes with the warning of “no Googling” often quietly accepted by the patient concerned. We have taken note of the fact that consistent information for the patient (with us, our Client and family) across the whole team, coupled with openness and honesty, underlines this confidence. There is also a feeling of the medical team not withholding any information; it is so important to counter the negative effects of anxiety on treatment and recovery. In this Practice, there have been a number of examples of success beyond expectation, where the dog or cat concerned has been given such great support at home, as well as at the Practice, following cancer removal or a big operation on a limb for example. A great initiative was reported from Farming Week on the BBC, how about this the farm coming to the school? In Aberdeenshire, the Royal Northern Countryside Initiative charity has developed a mobile farming “classroom”, a true mini-farm, that visits schools. On the day of the BBC interview, on board this specially adapted vehicle was a calf, some piglets, hay, straw and many local farm crops, for the children to see and to stroke (hand washing afterwards) and handle. An awareness of local farming practices and a knowledge of where the food eaten comes from is so important – everywhere - in Britain. In that school’s philosophy discussions in preparation and afterwards, different viewpoints were discussed – respect for people choosing to be vegetarians or vegans, of different viewpoints and religions around the World, above all recognising a genuine appreciation of the living animal in general. I’ll have a little bit of homework to try out on my own sheep this year, new research in Scotland has found that sheep can distinguish each other’s facial expressions. The Scottish Rural College’s lead researcher, Dr Lucille Bellegarde, describes this as an important discovery for animal welfare. This was carried out using photographic data in a variety of situations normally experienced by sheep – both positive, neutral and negative emotions being assessed. The study is the first ever to suggest that sheep can tell the difference between negative and neutral facial expressions. It is thought that if animals are able to perceive emotions in others, it is likely to affect their own emotional state. Through emotional perception, the sheep were recognising positive, neutral and negative expressions. Sheep do not have very developed facial musculature compared to primates, but they are able to show a wide range of facial expressions, particularly those involving ear posture. Dr. Bellegarde sums it up “In terms of animal welfare, it is essential to be able to understand how emotions are perceived between animals reared in groups, because this emotional perception is likely to affect their own emotional state, it may take just one happy or unhappy sheep to make the entire flock happy, or unhappy.” As the New Year begins, may we all think of those champions of agriculture working on farms and in the countryside, often in weather conditions far from cosy, 24 hours a day, right across Christmas and the New Year and on into the year. Let us think of those who care for animals in distress and who have no home (I use the word “who” as I believe that all animals are fully sentient beings in their own way for each species on this planet. Some researchers can show us that certain plants can be too). Finally, may we think of all the charities, the volunteers, dealing with wildlife and wildlife casualties, volunteer fireman and many more professionals right through to mountain rescue volunteers, the helicopter pilots and the medical professionals who attend those people requiring prompt care and attention. For those of you who generously feed the birds every day, especially across the colder months, we’ve recorded our first ever Redwing on the RSPB bird table! I wonder what this Winter will be like? According to Sir William (Billy) Connolly CBE, Scotland has only two seasons – June and Winter, Billy says that he worries about ridiculous things, such as how does a guy who drives a snowplough gets to work in the morning? Do have a safe, healthy and accomplished New Year, remember those loyal companions with whom we have the privilege of enjoying their day to day loving company, with their unquestionable loyalty, that they too remain contented, in the best health possible and well cared for, in partnership with us, your veterinary practice. We wish a Happy New Year to you all! Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

Learning something new every day…. Here’s to launching 2018 by learning a few wine facts…. There is so much to know in the world of wine, where like most things, the truth is stranger than fiction. Here are some interesting facts worth pondering over: Ÿ There are over 5,000 wine grape varieties in the world many of which have multiple names. Ÿ The Book of Jonah is the only book in the Old Testament that contains no reference to wine or the vine. Ÿ The Romans mixed lead with wine to improve Ÿ preservation, flavour, and texture. Unfortunately, lead is poisonous. Ÿ Of the wine sold in restaurants, 55% is red wine. Ÿ Red wine becomes lighter in colour as it ages, but white wine becomes darker. Ÿ There are more chemical compounds in wine than in blood. Ÿ 90% of wine produced in America comes from California Ÿ The average number of grapes it takes to make a bottle of wine is 736. But that can vary widely depending on things like grape variety, condition when picked. For example, plump berries from rain or small ones from a dry growing season. Ÿ There are an estimated forty-nine million (49,000,000) bubbles in a bottle of Champagne. Ÿ The largest cork tree in the world is in Portugal. It averages over one ton of raw cork per harvest every nine years. That’s enough to cork 100,000 bottles. Ÿ Corks need a corkscrew. One was patented in 1860 by M.L. Byrn of New York City. Ÿ Crushing grapes by walking on them (“foot treading”) is still sometimes used in producing a small quantity of the most expensive port wines. Ÿ British wine isn’t the same thing as English wine. British wine is made from imported grape juice concentrate. English wine is made from grapes grown in England. Ÿ Welsh wine is made from grapes grown in Wales (no surprises there!). Ÿ Good news - wine has about the same number of calories as the same amount of grape juice (does that mean it is counted as one of your 5 a day??)!

Remembering Willow Claire Meadows
This month I’m going to deviate away from books to share a little of what’s happened to me over the past month, how it's affected me and my family and what we can learn from it. For the past eight years my husband and I have shared our lives with Willow, our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Now anyone who knows the breed is likely to go gooey eyed at the mention of one, such is their adorable, friendly, outgoing nature. Willow had all of this in spades. Whether we were walking around Witney, Oxford, Bath or Cambridge, Willow would turn heads with her bouncy strut and absorb the cuddles of strangers as much as she did from her family. We had got around to talking about how we were going to celebrate her eighth birthday in January. As crazy as it sounds we used to enjoy taking her for a meal to celebrate her birthday as every year we grew in our love for her and wanted her to have the very best. We didn’t get very far in this discussion before Willow died suddenly on November 15th. She collapsed in the street and died on her way to the vet, who diagnosed the incident as a pulmonary embolism. According to him, we could have done nothing to prevent it, and do nothing about it once it had happened. To say it’s affected us deeply is understating it. I’ll never be able to forget the strength of my howling grief in the days that followed. Everything I thought I knew had been blown away. My husband took to wandering the village by himself blowing kisses to the spot where Willow last stood. His recovery is a work in progress. For myself, I’ve had to shut my grief down in order to get on with my job as editor in chief of After Nyne Magazine. Magazine schedules wait for no man, and that has partly been the saving of me. The other saving has been the depth of other people’s love and support. The sight of my husband and Willow had become a regular one in our village, and the support of our neighbours and friends in the village has made a huge difference to me, and how I’m currently relating to life. At a time when we’re all feeling disconnected from the good things in life in general – politically, environmentally - it’s good to know that there are still connections to be made, great people doing great things. I realise that now more than ever. I’ll be taking this thought forward as we embark on the next phase of our journey in 2018.

Online & On the High Street!
If you are planning to sell your home, then you will want to work with an agent that actively promotes all its properties online. A specific property website has identified that using the internet is the first step for 42% of applicants with a total of 92% going online at some stage of the buying process. Of those who look online, 50% of those are using a mobile device. We have always known the importance of quality photographs to produce clean and crisp images for our property particulars and this is even more important when marketing online. When viewing properties on our website from a desk or laptop computer, the images cover an impressive 75% of the screen. We have also invested in making our website mobile friendly with images and text adjusting automatically to best fit the viewing screen. On the Waymark website, potential buyers can download full property particulars, view a photographic slideshow, download the EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) and floor plan along with being able to see where on Google Maps the property is. Where this helps in practical terms is that if you are viewing our properties on a mobile device with Google Maps, you are only a couple of clicks away from getting directions straight to the doorstep of the property. Favourite properties can be added to a shortlist on our website [insert link] and where you are ready, you can arrange to book a viewing or arrange an appraisal on your own home. We also have a growing community on our Facebook page [insert where we share useful property tips and release our properties for sale. Also, our blog has published over 50 articles this year covering monthly property price updates and everything from focuses on local villages and how to sell a property in winter! If you have been to Faringdon recently, you cannot fail to notice our new, highly prominent office located on the corner at number 2 Cornmarket. So this is why we think you get the best of both worlds by working with Waymark. Our passion, energy, and professionalism can be found both online and on the high street and as we see out 2017, we are confident that 2018 will be just as exciting!
