Business Update
No prizes for guessing what the opening paragraph will be about this month; we all woke up on Friday morning surprised when we heard the results from the EU referendum, even those that voted to leave. The turmoil that has followed is exasperated by further political uncertainty. Hopefully this will settle down in the coming weeks rather than months. The nation has decided and we should move forward with a positive attitude. It could be seen as an opportunity to capitalise on the spirit of the British public. Which leads us nicely to recall the Queen’s 90th Birthday celebrations. A great show was put on by the Town Council with support from several local businesses; from supplying food and refreshments for the buffet and Tea party, to dressing windows or hosting clues for the treasure hunt. The people of Faringdon turned out in force to support the event and thoroughly enjoyed the festivities. An Oxfordshire High street Conference is being held later this month, the Town Team Coordinator and a member from the Chamber of Commerce with a high street presence will be attending and will bring back some fresh ideas for fulfilling the aim of revitalising our town centre. An update has been received from the developers of the 4&20 site; the main contractor is on target to hand over the site at the end of November. An expeditious fit-out could see some of the retailers open by Christmas! Britannia, the site contractors, have indicated a willingness to host local school visits, a fantastic opportunity for older students to get an insight into engineering, construction and associated trades. For younger pupils, a chance to wander around a site that one day will be set in Faringdon’s landscape. For information please contact president@faringdonchamberofcommerce.co.uk Finally the Faringdon Loyalty/Reward card scheme is ending and the final draw will take place on Monday 4th July.
A good sized group met on 6 June at The Bell Hotel and it was great to welcome some new members, Verity Manners and Olivia Hawkins. Our guest speaker was Nyasha Gwatidzo from the Vana Trust. In 2015 Nyasha walked the length of the Thames Path in order to raise money for the Vana Trust and afterwards wrote a book entitled ‘Walk with me’. It is about the journey, sacrifices and belief and charts her 183-mile over sixteen gruelling days. After Alice Douglass talked about financial ‘buckets’ in her sixty second pitch the theme was continued and we heard what was on several member’s ‘bucket’ lists. There were differing views on the outcome of the EU Referendum and the impact on the business community. We will not doubt continue the discussion at the next meeting now the result is known. Nyasha drew our attention to ‘fostering fortnight’ and the excellent work of the Vana Trust with its Organic Therapeutic Farm near Bicester and their support of St David’s School and the village of Matamal in Zimbabwe. Nyasha is planning another fund raising walk in Zimbabwe this year. After a few questions and announcements of other networking and training events the meeting closed at 9am. Looking Ahead: The next FBBC meeting will take place on 4 July 2016 at The Crown Inn, starting at 7.30am. Our speaker will be David Burrows an Invest in Oxford Manager, from the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The title of his talk is ‘Faringdon - opportunities for investment and export'.

0 0 0 1 It was my last day in Speyside before heading north again and the coldest yet at -14c my windscreen wash was frozen solid. In the old days it was easy to see who were distillery workers, they had albeit, illegal access to new make of spirit, for screen wash, not something that happens these days. The previous day I visited a few more distilleries. Tamdhu used in Famous Grouse, J&B and Cutty Sark, superb as a Single Malt, the 10 year old sherry matured, surprises all who taste it. The distillery is much larger than I expected with six stills. Very near neighbour, Knockando a Diageo Distillery, producing a 12 year old, unusually with the vintage on the label, an un-fettered, little seen, fruity and delightful Speyside whisky. Heading over the frozen hills past the closed Dallas Dhu, now owned by Historic Scotland and open to the public, well worth a visit, it produces high quality whisky, now fetching high prices. The nearby Benromach Distillery, closed at a similar time to Dallas Dhu is now owned by whisky merchants Gordon & Macphail, who produce small batches of quality single malts. The 15 Year Old was one of my top whiskies for 2015. The workers jokingly suggested I put some spirit on the now salted almost opaque windscreen, now where have I heard that before? The sister distilleries of Mannochmore and Glenlossie were next. I went there on a dark winters night some years ago. Glenlossie has a dark grains plant which converts the pot ale and waste from several local distilleries into pet food pellets, my guide was enthusiastic about the product. I prefer the comfort and atmosphere of the still room and the whisky, which is well presented on our shelves in the discontinued Flora and Fauna series, at 12 and 10 years old respectively. Linkwood tucked away on the edge of Elgin was my next port of call. It produces a delightfully soft and undersold dram. Numerous expressions down to the affordable 35cl 15 year old from Gordon & Macphail are on our shelves. I dropped in to have a look at the Coleburn Distillery, closed in 1983, visually intact but unfortunately used for other purposes than distilling. It reminded me of a medieval castle, all there but without a function! However the whisky lives on, we stock a 1972 and 1981 starting price a cool £400. Distilleries line the road to Rothes all owned by International Companies. Longmorn – Pernod Ricard, Speyburn -Thai Brands, Glen Elgin – Diagio, Glen Grant – Campari and breaking news since last months edition, the independent Benriach has been bought by Brown Forman aka Jack Daniels. Such is the desire to own some of the premium distilleries in Speyside. We stock numerous expressions from all of these distilleries. One of the Crown Jewels is Glenrothes but you will have to wait till the next issue for that cliff hanger!

In sensory experiments to test the wine tasting ability of men and women, female participants lead the way. In fact, the success rate of women in the most difficult wine exams of all, The Master of Wine qualification, is now higher than that of men, and all of the last ten winners of the annual top prize in the Wine & Spirit Education Trust exams, taken by around 60,000 students globally, have been female. This gender divide, which has been well documented through a series of experiments, has seen women providing more precise and consistent results. Traditionally, wine and more so the knowledge of wine was grouped with male orientated pastimes such as cars, golf and fishing. As we move further into modern times and the gender barriers continue to crumble, women feature more prominently in this once male dominated industry. Women have been taking cellars and vineyards by storm all over the world. The Champagne region boasts a long line of successful winemakers, the most famous being Veuve Cliquot. In South Africa, Californian born Samantha O’Keefe realised her dream, buying an estate in Greyton in the Overberg area of South Africa. Tucked into the foothills of a dramatic mountain range, Lismore Estate Vineyards was born. Passion and vision, combined with vines planted at 300m elevation, chilled by winter snow and nourished by the African sun, the resultant wines are classic, cool climate wines which are rich and complex. Lismore Estate Vineyards Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc 2014 South Africa Den Boer Wines £16.99 It has an attractive, complex bouquet with lovely light white peach and herbaceous aroma. The palate is well balanced with an initial spicy, vegetative flavour, opening up to hazelnuts, rounding off to a creamy yet refreshing complex finish.

Summer greetings once more and a roving boat ticket for everyone on board regarding things topical and, I hope, of interest and concern to you all. Lawns, flowerbeds, the vegetable plot and the roadside verges have now adopted an early Summer look – the last of the spring bulb leaves and yet still the primrose leaves are covered by a botanical explosion in both colour, shape and length. I have heard the cuckoo several times this Spring and am following families of birds at our feeding table. Songbird seed mixes are still very popular with nuthatches and woodpeckers. The weather has been an amazing mixture this week as I write; shade temperatures into mid 20’s. So the risk of heatstroke has become a reality again. With Rabbit Awareness Week, we have respiratory problems and the very common problem of flystrike. Training a rabbit to use a litter tray in the hutch or home can allow simple daily changes and the rest of the rabbit and the bedding stays dry. Preventive applications, available through your Practice, are also very useful. Hopping from one species to another, I arrive at the destination of heatstroke in dogs, particularly in vehicles or walking and running at the hottest times of the day. I sincerely hope that no pet will ever get this life-threatening, distressing, frightening problem. But do realise that an OVERCAST day can be just as fatal to a dog or cat left in a car as on a bright sunny day. Heatstroke is an acute, progressive, life-threatening EMERGENCY, with rising body temperatures causing direct thermal injury to vital organs. Exercising on hot days, particularly strenuously, will also result in heatstroke. Dogs particularly prone to heatstroke are those with laryngeal paralysis, short-nosed breeds like pugs, those overweight - and/or with cardiovascular disease, with older dogs and finally those dark/densely coated dogs. Should you see heatstroke in any animal, ring your Practice and start external cooling with copious TEPID water straightaway. Offer small, frequent volumes of cold water to drink then drive with full air-con, or with the windows down. Studies have shown that that dogs cooled by their owners before arriving at the Practice have a lower mortality rate than those whose owners make no attempt to cool. Simon Barnes, writing in a recent Sunday Times Magazine edition, asks whether it is sentimental to grieve the death of a family pet. Far from it, he says – it’s essential. Love and death are never trivial. Something one has loved is lost forever. Someone, an animal, isn’t “lost” but is dead. The death of a family pet too often seems trivial to those outside the family who choose not to understand. Love can never be trivial; it is a contradiction in terms. And to love any living thing is to accept the inevitability of grief, of death. The death of a beloved non-human companion occupies an appropriate place in the hierarchy of grief. That’s why I find writing personal condolence cards sourced from my artist friend of the same name, Kay Elliott, from her studio in Warwickshire, are part of such an important process at this time of grief. You are not alone; that someone writing is trying to understand your feelings and to bring comfort and to be there for you. Some families have told me about wonderful ways they have supported their grieving children by having a special ceremony in memory of their pet, with words, photographs and drawings. I’m also at the stage where I’m pushing ahead with our highest possible Cat Friendly Clinic status application. By having a label, it may certainly bring recognition to the quality of professional care, knowledge and empathy of our feline patients, but I can say that our Practice Team does a wonderful job with the cats already under our care at the Practice and our Cattery. I’m also bringing all the strings together regarding the canine rehabilitation project that will be set up here. Bringing the skills and passion of invited outside experts into the cases needing rehabilitation is humbling in itself but more exciting still is the pulling together of all the materials (medicines, equipment) and skills that already exist here in Stanford in a co-ordinated and simple algorithm of care. I know that here is the work and challenge that I have finally come to realise in my career that will bring the possibility of a higher quality of life for dogs and cats of all ages, with disabilities or none, to allow the biophilia to blossom and derive real pleasure from its expression. Our physiotherapist, Nycky, from Oxford will be taking appointments from the 7th July at the Practice. Our Chiropractor, Jess, from Witney, will be here later in the year. On reflection (in the water of life) facilitating and progressing canine rehabilitation in my Practice may be my home port and final destination. Like Sir Francis Drake and Plymouth, so long ago, I have a new, real voyage of discovery and learning before me before returning to port. When Puck tells Oberon (Midsummer Night’s Dream, W. Shakespeare) that he can put a girdle round the Earth in 40 minutes, this was revolutionary to the public at the time – and how appropriate was the new theatre being then built in London at the time to be called The Globe. Do enjoy the rest of your Summer, be alert for any problems, enjoy the company of your pets and the sights and scents in the countryside around you. Until next month, thanks for your company! Deacons the Jewellers are celebrating 40 years in Faringdon Market Place this July. The Jewellers shop actually dates back to 1839 when Queen Victoria had been on the throne just two years. The business was begun by the ABEL Bros who then sold to the Leverton family. In 1976 the late Michael Deacon bought the business from Mr Leverton. Today, Deacons established in 1848, have branches not only in Faringdon but also in Marlborough, Royal Wootton Bassett and at the company’s main premises in Old Town, Swindon. Deacons of Faringdon like to provide a good old fashioned service but in contemporary modern way. The company is able to offer a comprehensive repairs service for jewellery, watches and clocks of every description. This work is carried out at the company’s on-site workshops at 11-15 Wood Street, Old Town, Swindon. The shop has a wide variety of new and second hand jewellery in gold and silver and likes to offer things that are individual and different to the average High Street store. There is a good selection of watches, clocks including brands such as Lorus, Rotary and Seiko. There are also many gift lines for every occasion, in silver, pewter, leather and silver plate. Engraving can be arranged for every type of presentation or family milestone. How does Hydrotherapy Help your dog? Hydrotherapy can significantly improve the quality and rate of healing following surgery or traumatic injury. It can help with Martin rehabilitation and increase the chance of a successful return to full fitness. Hydrotherapy is also beneficial to growing puppies from 10 weeks onwards. This is due to all exercise being non weight bearing so there is no impact on growing joints and also helps to build muscle. Hydrotherapy has specific therapeutic effects on body tissues, so aiding with relief of pain, swelling & stiffness, muscle strengthening and maintenance, increased range of motion in joints, circulation, heart & lungs, increased tissue healing, last but not least simply being overweight, restoring a better quality of life and a happy dog! Martin first became involved with Hydrotherapy, during treatment needed with his previous dogs, which were German Shepherd's. Each week taking them and having spectacular results. He was a natural and found his true calling in life, something he had a real drive for. STAGECOACH PERFORMING ARTS Give your child Creative Courage for Life with Stagecoach Performing Arts Parents looking for new ways to keep their children active, happy and engaged have found the solution in the form of performing arts classes at Stagecoach Performing Arts. Stagecoach Performing Arts in Faringdon offer classes in singing, dancing and acting at Faringdon Junior School and are offering a two-week trial during the school autumn term for youngsters aged four to 18. Performance at Stagecoach is about more than simply learning how to sing, dance and act. Students develop the creative courage to unlock their potential, to stand up and be heard, to work well with other students and to embrace new ideas and possibilities. As they hone their new skills and work together to devise and rehearse performances, students become more self-assured, expressive, sociable and imaginative. All skills that will serve them well on the stage of life and help them to tackle new situations with resilience, creativity and courage. Eva Johnson, 12, and her brother Sam, 10, are now Stagecoach regulars after initially attending a two week trial a couple of years ago. Their mum, Katie Johnson, said: “My children absolutely loved it. They came home after the first day and were full of chatter about the friends they’d made and the fun they’d had.” She added: “They learn so much more than singing, dancing and drama. My son is naturally quite shy and I’ve seen his confidence levels soar, whereas my daughter is outgoing and has been able to channel her energy into performing.” Classes are small which means every child is given attention and allowed to realise their potential at their own pace. The teachers all have performing arts experience and are there to lead and support youngsters as they conquer fears and rise to new challenges. Classes run during school term time . or or To find out more about the two-week trial please either call email Principal James Barker at faringdon@stagecoach.co.uk or visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/faringdon

A lot of us spend our time moving around our fair land during the summer, visiting friends, having barbecues and taking in a stately home or two. Often these movements include taking food and so this month I have a little cheeky cake in mind. Not only does the sunshine bless us with happiness but it also brings us some amazing produce, growing and then ripening in these golden rays of life. And some of this harvest brings beautiful soft fruits, some with stones, some with small pips, blushing skins or even a creepy crawly or two! At this time of writing, luscious flat peaches are on offer. Juicy and sweet, with gorgeous little soft skins. And as time moves on we have apricots, and soon plums. Then on the other hand, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries. All the vibrant berries we adore and all are so versatile. Growing in profusion from one plant, we can pick many from one stem. And if you get the chance to do that, also just marvel a moment at them, plump, sweet and beautiful. Because of their tartness, a berry can go quite far in the flavour stakes. It can turn its attentions to sweet or savoury. Flavours can be delicate or punchy, they work well all round. Roast a duck breast and then in the last 5 minutes of cooking, sauté a few sliced strawberries in a knob of butter then serve together with the duck. Or whip mountains of double cream until it holds a peak and then fold through raspberries and or strawberries, along with caster sugar and a few tablespoons of brandy - or a few drops of vanilla if you don't want alcohol. Talking of alcohol, it's always delicious to drop a few raspberries or strawberries in to a glass of bubbles. Meringues go particularly well with berries. Again, I think it's down to the tartness. Ring the changes folding in cornflour and vinegar to the whisked egg whites, then spread the mix into a Swiss roll tin. Bake for 30 minutes then roll up with whipped cream and mixed berries. But if you are visiting or taking in a picnic, make these lovely little cakes to take. Cream together 175g butter and 175g soft light brown sugar until smooth. Whisk in 2 eggs then lastly 150g self raising flour and 2 heaped tablespoons ground almonds. Stir through 75g berries and if you like 50g White chocolate chunks. Use an iced cream scoop or just a tablespoon, scoop the batter in to 8 muffin sized cake papers. Bake for around 15 minutes at 180°c. Dust with a little caster sugar once they are out of the oven. Eat one at once! Then pack the rest up and transport to your favourite place! Lesley Holdship Hare in the Woods 07754 086316 7A Market Place,Faringdon SN7 7HL

Healthy Tips!
| The Advertiser | page 21 |
Wellness and Health Life takes us on many journeys, hopefully healthy and happy ones. Most of us are fortunate to have started life with a healthy body and mind. With the support of those around us and by making the right choices life can be sweet. Sometimes however things do not go as planned and sometimes we take a look at ourselves in the mirror and see someone who is not us, or at least not the happy and healthy person we want to be. The body is a mirror as to how we live our lives. Whilst doing research for my own personal use I heard the words; ‘The body speaks to us in whispers’. Often we do not listen to them or take notice to the subtle changes going on in our body until one day we wake up and notice that we are ‘out of balance’. Now is that time to change it - be honest with yourself and start doing things to regain your balance. Treat the root cause! This is where honesty is important: Why are you the shape you are? Why are you unhappy? What does your body need to become healthy? What needs to change in your life? Are you willing to do what is needed to change it? For a truly transformational experience the mind, body and soul all need attention. Working with hundreds of clients over 11 years has taught me that change only comes when you are prepared to admit the root cause of the problem, usually why you are unhappy, and then being prepared to work hard to make change. This entails tackling: the food you eat the exercise you do the sleep you get the stress you are under the people you associate with Wellness is a choice, a lifestyle, it is something you do, it is how you feel inside. It needs work and attention; it is not a fad diet or a week of gym use. It is about taking pleasure in eating a sane diet of nutritious, clean, local, naturally produced foods. It is about moving your body, healthy relationships, a healthy work life balance, creative expression, spiritual connection, healthy environment, it is about finding what makes you whole and about healing from the inside. Work out what your life purpose is and go with your gut feeling. Putting all these factors in order and re-balancing them will make a massive difference to your life and your health. I have seen it in the people that I have been fortunate enough to help and in myself. Improving your health and wellness can start with small alterations in your daily routines, connecting more with those people who can help you and who are there to support rather than those who, however unconsciously, sabotage your efforts. Quick fixes help in the short term but, unless you really tackle the issues that have made you unhappy and possibly out of shape, long term change will be difficult. Get a piece of paper, a white board or your laptop and have a brain storming session. If you’re honest with yourself, it will most likely strike you what to do next! Now is always the best time to start to get your house in order. Good luck on your path to a better, healthier and happier you.
