Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Faringdon Business Breakfast Club An interesting time at Faringdon Business Breakfast Club in June in which each member had 3 minutes to talk about their business and related interests rather than the customary 1 minute. We found out lots more about the group including Bryan Orchard’s voluntary work with ‘Tools with A Mission’ who refurbish and donate old tools to countries in Africa. So, if you have any carpentry tools, gardening tools or even sewing machines sitting in a shed or garage, contact Bryan to organise collection. It was good to see a few members who hadn’t been to Faringdon Business Breakfast for a while including Tony Fisher who talked about his Baby product business, Close Parent, which sells, amongst other things, reusable nappies made from bamboo and Noel Austin talked about the income that Utility Warehouse has given him since he joined when he retired from full time employment. Amongst our regular members, Julie Nicholls talked about the importance of positive language and the problems with some of our popular nursery rhymes, Des Coates mentioned the latest business he is involved in – a 3D printing company and Simon Brusch and Mary Thomas both took the opportunity to mention the children’s coding club they run in Faringdon – Faringdon CoderDojo which is open for children from Years 5 – 11 and runs on Tuesdays in term time from 5:45 – 6:45 in the Pump House in the Market Square. Our next meeting is on 3rd July at 7:30am. This is a great chance to discover how we can help each other – or those interests we have outside business. In the next week, we hope to launch our new Faringdon website at www.fbbc-networking.co.uk. From the July meeting, you will need to book and pay through the website. The price will be increased to £12 / breakfast (the first increase for 12 years) to cover our increasing costs. Please note, if you choose to pay on the day, the price will be £13.

Business Update Summer is now upon us and it seems the country is lurching from crisis to crisis, be it the weather, fall out from a General Election, Brexit, terrorism or other incidents that have made national headlines. The one thing they all have in common is, the finger gets pointed at the authorities. We don’t think that any of the recent changes in Faringdon have gone unnoticed and there are more changes to come. Houses are being built at a phenomenal rate in an attempt to meet government targets. This creates a demand for more commercial developments to provide jobs, whilst the houses will require improvements to services and infrastructure, such as school places for the children living in these houses, the requirements go on. In the same way as above, the finger gets pointed at the accountable authorities to fulfil these demands. Whilst this is undoubtedly their responsibility, with the budget cut-backs across most sectors, there is assistance that we, the people of Faringdon, can provide, to help them help us. One of these areas is the town vitality and the business sector. Over the previous months we have referred to the idea of a business plan for Faringdon. All businesses in Faringdon were invited to a brainstorming workshop and the ideas and concerns of those who attended helped shape a draft, five year business plan. This has now been refined and will soon be circulated to the various groups to see if it is feasible. If the plan is approved and adopted then support will be required to help implement it over the next five years. This could be in the form of ideas, advice, assistance or support, the list goes on. What we would ask is that you contribute to the various groups feeding into this process. Continue P24 …

0 0 0 1 The last few articles have discussed how the increasing diversity of styles of whisky produced within Scottish regions has provided greater choice for consumers but could be viewed as making the traditional regional classifications redundant. However, perhaps whisky drinkers can now enjoy the best of both worlds. Whilst exploring a region (either actually or virtually) they can both uncover what makes that area unique and also try a variety of styles of whisky – a win, win situation! Points of commonality still exist within regions and can be used as a unifying influence. For example, one of the most obvious unique aspects of a region is its landscape, and this can have a considerable impact on whisky – whether it be the history and emotions that a region such as the Highlands conjures up and that can be used to help tell the story of a brand, or the actual physical grandeur of the Glens and the sparkling water of the rivers that are enjoyed by visitors to the area.

By highlighting this uniqueness it is possible for all distilleries in the region to benefit, and this willingness to work together is becoming more widespread – with routes similar to the Speyside whisky trail being mooted elsewhere. Who wouldn’t want to indulge in a CalMac hopscotch trip that took in not only the beautiful islands of the Hebrides and their wonderful wildlife and white beaches but also visits to various Hebridean distilleries? The landscape also helps shape what wine makers would term ‘terroir’, and in the case of whisky local environmental factors can influence (amongst others elements) both barley and peat. The use of local barley has become more common in recent times but what many whisky drinkers perhaps don’t realise is that, historically, peat has been a local influence in more ways than one. Its availability, or otherwise, would certainly play a part in a whisky’s flavour but just as important is that the area peat is laid down in determines its nature and the properties that are released when it burns. So the coastal peat banks of Laphroaig will provide a salty tang whereas those on the heather moor of Hobbister on Orkney provide Highland Park with its honey notes. Even though most barley is not malted on site nowadays the template used for the flavour profile of many whiskies was created thousands of years ago by the land. There will always be a place for whiskies that we can rely on as being typical of their area – whether as a guide for the novice drinker just starting out on their journey or for when you hanker after a good, straight forward whisky that screams Speyside or Islay or Highland. It’s also great, however, that our choice of whiskies is expanded by those that, whilst sharing the heritage and some of the flavour imprints of a region, have their own distinctive twists. The Ashes Of London

BATHROOM SHOWROOM Open to the Public & Trade

By Andrew Taylor It’s been a great month for non-fiction on my reading list. As we speak, I am in the process of finishing Jo Malone: My Story, the fragrance entrepreneur’s ‘from the heart’ autobiography. I’ve loved every second of it, and I’m not even finished. I’ve adopted Malone as a role model. The working class girl made good through grit and hard work story is one close to my heart, and Malone does not shy away from exploring the lows – dyslexia, breast cancer, and family ructions - as well as the monumental highs.

Highly recommended if you love inspirational stories about strong people who make it against the odds. And who doesn’t? My other non-fiction favourite this month has been Constellation of Genius, Kevin Jackson’s exploration of the sheer amount of creativity and world changing events centring around the year 1922. Jackson frames his journey through the year around two cultural milestones – the publication of James Joyce’s Ulysses, and the publication of TS Eliot’s poem The Waste Land, which has been called the most influential Englishlanguage poem of the last century. As it transpires, these are only two of the milestones. I was stunned at the sheer amount of genius stemming from one year, across art, literature, politics.. a constellation indeed. Jackson’s writing is engaging, and makes it one of those books where you’re always tempted to read just one more page. Try and get hold of this one if you can. My fiction pick was no less satisfactory. The prolific crime author Andrew Taylor’s latest novel ‘The Ashes of London’ was just the thing to see me through the lull between publications of the next book in CJ Sansom’s ‘Shardlake’ series. I’m a Shardlake groupie. And I never thought I’d be able to say that about a hunch-backed lawyer whose first case is set in 1537. Sansom is a master, and has spawned a whole genre of crime novels set during the Reformation and after. It was the Sansom-esque blurb on the back of Taylor’s book that reeled me in. And I wasn’t disappointed. Mysterious women, murders, the Great Fire of London and King Charles II – I couldn’t have asked for a better line-up. The book cracks along at a fair old pace and has left me hungry for the follow up. Can’t wait.

July Ramblings!

Welcome to a late-written gallop along country lanes and across fields where the fat, scented hay bales, under the burning sun, surround walkers and riders along the footpaths like silent sentinels, yet waiting to be stacked. We’ve shorn our own sheep and they join thousands of others over the countryside, looking very svelte, bright white or charcoal black. Ours left the shearing pen like a group of gazelles showing the lion just how fit they are. After that display, we were obviously gifted that the rest still waited in the pen for their turn at the clippers. I was pleased to read that life is also possible at a slower pace – like the 50 year old tortoise making its way across the Severn Bridge. Perhaps it thought that the tolls would already be scrapped and, in true Terry Pratchett tradition, had correctly assumed that no trolls lived under that particular bridge. Perhaps they’d moved away after hearing the amazing voices from the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. I’m still amazed by the Cardiff Naked Bike Ride (birthday suits NOT obligatory) and, equally the 23.6 mile Horse versus Man Marathon race the weekend before. The Man v Horse 21 mile marathon in Wales was started in 1980 as a result of a pub bet, and has been an annual fixture ever since. It starts and finishes at the original Neuadd Arms in Llanwrtyd Wells, where the bet was first laid. Huw Lobb, in 2004 (2:05:19), became the first-ever man to beat the horse – and in doing so claimed the considerable accumulated prize money (£25,000). Florian Holzinger won in 2007 (2:20:30). So, for 36 years, a horse and rider has won. Vet checks are only offered to the horses themselves, so runners gain a little extra distance. In 2014, the organisers decided to add a couple of extra miles and a few more hills – two things this race definitely didn't need more of, it seems! That brought the new course to 23.6m, which can be run as a solo effort or a relay team of three. Rider Lola Evans on Rheidol Petra won this year (2:50:00) with the fastest running human being Owen Beilby, arriving 20 minutes later! Thank you to all clients everywhere who took the opportunity to take part in the recent 2017 Rabbit Awareness Week. The focus of this year’s event was to highlight the importance of feeding grass and high-quality hay for the majority of each rabbit’s diet. So, some figures: every rabbit should eat 85-90% of its daily diet (its bodyweight) as hay and grass, with the remaining diet being some leafy greens or herbs and pellets. NO lawn cuttings please as these will rapidly ferment inside and can then be fatal. My practice offered health checks for our clients’ rabbits, with advice on microchipping and neutering, insurance and gave the hard-to-get Myxomatosis vaccine at a special rate. A painting competition went on our Facebook page and all around local schools. Follow this up if you wish with the RAW website link – rabbitawarenessweek.co.uk I recently read in our veterinary press that the incidence of Parvovirus disease has significantly increased in the Hampstead area of London. It has been surmised that this is because of poor uptake of dog vaccination in young pups and yearling dogs. I would offer the alternative view that pups are also at risk with too-early vaccination and failure to give a further Parvo vaccination after maternal antibody levels have fallen and the pup is, effectively, insufficiently protected. We re-vaccinate at 26 weeks. For those readers still, rightly, concerned about OVER-vaccination, even though my Practice runs under WSAVA advice, now published across the UK, we would still offer vaccination status blood tests at our forth, seventh…birthday vaccine boosters. We strongly advise that Leptospirosis vaccines are given ANNUALLY after the first birthday full booster. Finally, PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE DOGS IN PARKED CARS in the lethal temperatures that such strong sunshine creates. Hot pavements won’t help their bare feet either! Otherwise, all worries and concerns aside, I hope that you enjoyed this gallop through “UK events” and that you enjoy time-out in the garden, watching the bees on the roses and lavender and those yummy raspberries and currants ripening on their canes. Have a good, safe and happy Summertime! Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

What are house buyers really looking for?

A study using ‘eye-tracking’ technology has revealed what prospective buyers pay most attention to during viewing's and shows critical differences between male and female viewers. The study for Anglian Home Improvements, involved viewers agreeing to wear spectacles that tracked their eye movements, recording what they looked at, what things disrupted their natural eye movements and what they lingered on. Some 27% of the viewers’ focus was spent on furnishings, 24% on looking at personal effects and clutter, with just four per cent given over to the layout of the property. Personal effects and clutter were most distracting for female viewers, who spent 28% of their viewing time focusing on them, compared to 20%for male buyers. The company claims that the results show that even when potential buyers did not mention clutter or mess to agents in their post-viewing feedback, their eyes were repeatedly drawn to it when panning a room. Overall, men spent more time than women looking at the structure and features of the grounds and building (32% compared to 22%), while women focused more on the personal elements such as decoration and furnishings. Personal items constantly drew the participants' gaze. “Photos were a big element of this - the data showed that house hunters often made eye contact with specific photographs, which distracted the viewers from other elements of the room” says a statement from the company. Repairs or structural features made up just 4% of participants’ viewing behaviours. This included checking door frames, sliding doors or light switches. Looking at external features and the garden accounted for 22% of the participants’ focus, with 17% of time spent looking outside through the windows. Our experience in conducting viewing is very much the same (based on intuition and not asking our prospective buyers to wear eye-tracking spectacles!). Before a viewing, try to remove as many personal items, books, photographs etc. as you can so people look at your home in terms of how they would feel living in it and not become distracted, through natural curiosity, by how you live.

Healthy Living!

How you value yourself and your body image can be closely entwined. When you look in the mirror are you happy with what you see? How does your shape make you feel? Can you learn to be happy with your body? Unhappiness with your body image can bring low selfesteem which in turn brings unhappiness. If you view what you see as negative it is easy to let healthy eating or exercise drop from your priority list. Negative life satisfaction comes with a drop in mental and physical health. There are certain things about our bodies, such as bone structure, that we can’t change, but there is an awful lot about ourselves that we can. Breaking a cycle of negative emotion is a start. There is a lot of research to say that by acknowledging how you feel and attacking the issue is a great start! Look at all the good things about yourself and value them. Change the emphasis from bodyweight to getting fit and strong. Respect yourself by treating your body as deserving of worth and refusing to take part in self-destructive behaviour or self-sabotage. Low respect for yourself affects your health and wellbeing and eventually your shape. I appreciate this is a very complicated, sensitive and difficult topic and I am only looking at this from a point of view of how some people I work with find making change difficult. I don’t pretend to be an expert where deep-seated issues need to be addressed by qualified therapists. However, making change sometimes needs us to look at our bodies differently - and to stop constantly checking the scales. Doing something positive improves body image and exercise has been shown to do that. Doing anything is better than doing nothing! Your body is yours for life – treat it well – respect it – nourish it – exercise it and show it a little love. Getting fitter and stronger can create shape change and confidence. You can appear the same weight on the scales but look and feel different. Accept some of the flaws and make peace with yourself. Look back to when you were happier with your shape and identify the trigger that changed your thought process. Understanding what our body is capable of and then considering how you treat it will help you to focus and should motivate you to value it more. Make a contract with yourself to not let your body down by fuelling it with poor quality, processed food, or by stopping exercising and letting it stagnate and become unwell. In your contract build in a section to reduce the stresses that we all put on our bodies, emotional, physical and digestive. Do not deny your body of the good things it needs in life. Body image and self-esteem start in the mind, not in the mirror. They can change the way you understand your value and worth. Healthy body image and self-esteem are a big part of well-being. Get to grips with the belief that your self-esteem and identity come from within. Once you believe that the outside will start to change. List the good things and build on them. Surround yourself with positive people. Recognize that beauty, health and strength come in all sizes. Avoid the diet trap. Weight is not a good measure of self-worth, put it into proper perspective! Concentrate on developing a healthy lifestyle. Let go of perfection and focus on the positive aspects of your life. Let yourself be happy! Rich. Red Wine & Cheese

Rob.. The Cheese Man! Rob

Best Cornish Pasty’s. Really Tasty Gammon Ham. 01367 241702 Market Place Faringdon SN7 7HP

Busting the Myth of Red Wine & Cheese Contrary to belief that only red wine (or port) should be paired with cheese, you will be interested to know that whites are actually better matches than reds! This is due to the freshness they provide as they have higher levels of acidity which cuts through the fat. So how do you match wine with cheese? Master of Wine and Master Sommelier Gerard Basset reveals that it is very simple and it starts with one rule; choose whether you want to give the lead role to the wine or the cheese. If it’s the cheese, select a wine with less character that will just compliment it and play a supportive role. If you want the wine to be the star, go easy on the pungency and dominance of the cheese. We are fortunate to have a couple of independent purveyors of fabulous cheese here in Faringdon, very worthwhile on making a visit to them for supplies to test out the following: Ÿ Sauternes with Blue cheese Ÿ Gewurztraminer with a pungent cheese such as Munster or Stinking Bishop Ÿ Rioja with sheep’s cheese Ÿ Champagne with Cotswold Brie Ÿ Rich, red wine with aged Cheddar Ÿ Sauvignon blanc with goat’s cheese If this all sounds too tricky to master, and you want to focus on just the one wine with the whole cheeseboard, take a look at a fortified wine or Aperitif wines. Some of the best allrounder's are Amontillado Sherry, Rivesaltes, Tawny Port or Madeira. This group of wines have the flavour profiles of the accompaniments to cheese platters; dried fruits, nuts and the range of spices found in chutneys, with the added bonus of being reliable crowd pleasers!
