Faringdon Business Breakfast Club It was great to welcome some new members to our June meeting held in The Bell. All of us came prepared to talk about ‘Why we love what we do’ so it gave the meeting a very special energy but may have caused one or two problems for our timekeeper. To be fair we were kept in order and we finished on time. There were one or two identifiable themes emerging from our discussions. The importance of clear and concise communications with suppliers and customers alike was mentioned several times as well as the benefits of providing help and support to other people without necessarily giving them a bill. Our new members included Elizabeth Carter who runs her own consulting business and Veitza Weise and James Cox both from Red Kite financial solutions. We had advice from Tim Cave on the frequency of putting fresh information on websites and more than one person shared some quirky information about either themselves or their business, fortunately it was all legal! At our next meeting on 2 July we are looking forward to hearing about how perfection is the key word when it comes to selecting your teas. Everyone is welcome even coffee drinkers so do book a place on our website www.fbbc-networking.co.uk.

Business Update The sun is out and summer is here. Indeed, the sun seems to have brought people out and about too. At the time of going to press, it will be the weekend of Live at the Park, which if previous years are anything to go by will be a resounding success. Go to Tucker’s Park and support it – for more details visit their website www.liveatthepark.co.uk That is just a starter for a whole host of fetes, festivals and other events in the area. The feel good factor these create is palpable and help the town prosper economically and socially. We hope the great people who work tirelessly to put on these events take great pride in the contribution they make to the towns community and economy. In these struggling times for the high street retail trade every little bit of assistance helps. For the other businesses in the area, the Oxfordshire Towns Chamber Network (OTCN) has a timetable full of networking events in Oxfordshire over the next few months. It’s always worth investing a little time to interact with other local businesses to share successes, challenges and opportunities. As with any networking meeting there is always the chance that your next big customer may be there. Go to www.otcn.co.uk for more details of their events. So what does it take to build a successful business? This month Harwell Campus is hosting a free morning of workshops focusing on the skills and knowledge it takes to do just that. Information on this and other fantastic seminars can be found on the Vale 4 Business web site www.vale4business.com Finally, back to the sunshine and the feel good factor. The biggest cultural event in Faringdon’s eclectic calendar is arguably “Follyfest” and the 2018 edition will be raising spirits in the Market Place from Friday 27th until Sunday 29th drawing people to our town from far and wide.

Kay Chamberlain, Jon Chamberlain, Cheryl Watson, Clare Knock, Julian Watson and Doreen Leslie won by several clear points, scoring only 6 faults out of a possible 120 changes of Grandsire. All Saints' tower also provided a new ringer, Wendy Tynan, to the runner-up team, Stanford in the Vale. Hello and thank you for joining me on a new ramble. We’ve had some very helpful information posted this week, advising how members of the public can assist with a swarm of precious honeybees, from a safe distance. Our local beekeeper Justin, who can be contacted on 07407271299 asks that no-one approaches the swarm, ring him immediately, close windows and take children and pets indoors. The family can then watch how the beekeepers collect and take the colony to a fresh hive and feed them too, if necessary. If no-one notices or takes any action, the swarm will move off within the hour and may take up residence in a house roof where the ability to collect it will be almost impossible – and the swarm may have to be wastefully destroyed. So please act quickly, Justin asks! As I pull on the reins of this piece, it’s Swift awareness week - those scimitar shapes in the sky that I wrote about last month. The adults can fly up to 500 miles over a day, hunting not only insects but spiders on their silken threads high up in the sky, to fly down and feed their young in the nest. The juvenile birds follow their parents a short time after the adult birds have flown back across Europe and African in early August. Young birds may not actually land anywhere “solid” for 18 months, after leaving the nest. A new way of helping people to learn how to make themselves and their dog responsible around sheep has been developed by farmer Tobin Bird, who’s experienced the rough side of livestock worrying, a word that can’t possibly describe the horror of mutilation and abortion that can follow a dog attack. Tobin Bird says, “It is often said that any dog is capable of attacking a sheep – it’s the hereditary wolf in them, and even the most placid pooch can turn killer if those ancient genes kick in. Have a look at his web site, its a very interesting read. www.fwi.co.uk/livestock/farm-diversification-whichtrains-dogs-to-stop-sheep-worrying With another World Cup in full swing again, something to really whet the appetite happened on a pitch in Guernsey recently. The local Constabulary may well have been called to a pitch invasion! One hundred and fifty milking Guernsey cows broke through the fences and hedges as they left the farm parlour to go back out into the farm fields to graze. However, someone must have fancied a game and ran on to the pitch – tails up! Some dribbled (on) the ball as players hurriedly left and the farmer and linesmen brought them to order using corner flags! The local derby was decided later in the local pub, where a draw was declared. Must see!… https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/local-football-match-abandoned-cows-pitch/ Jersey cows were the foundation herd at Oathill Farm in the Cotswolds, where farming progressed “organically” with the land – in the broadest sense, caring as well as advancing the skills and knowledge at the time, in the early 1920’s. This was under the care of a farmer-in-training then, George Henderson, with his family. Pioneering husbandry of the cattle and diversification into pigs, poultry, sheep and arable. The story of this farm is written up in the book “The Farming Ladder”, followed-up with “Buttercup the Calf” as a book for children and adults who don’t grow up!. The first book is highly praised by several book reviewers, including one from the Daily Herald called John Betjeman. Mr Betjeman writes: “..Shows the calm and balance a man may derive from a well-ordered life, timed to fit in with the blessed inevitability and variety of the seasons”. Rabbit awareness week is just finishing as I write and we have really enjoyed meeting the stars and their owners. Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the UK and during the week, we have been advising, as well as carrying out, vaccinations for the RHD2 viral disease, often causing sudden death in rabbits who have never been in contact with other rabbits. This distressing disease is preventable and so is the Myxomatosis vaccine, given 2 weeks apart. Another issue in warm, humid weather is blowfly “strike”, particularly around the perineum if there’s any lingering moisture from urine or impacted faeces. Researchers at the Liverpool Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Unit, have pooled data taken from a sentinel network of veterinary practices for three years, regarding confirmed cases of fly-strike. Rabbits aged 5 or over, female more than male, have the highest incidence. Sadly, 44% of those rabbits presented died or were euthanased. The problem can start as early as April, with the peak months June to August, when the green-bottle fly is most active. By “moving away from muesli” towards a high-quality hay-based diet, with the result being cleaner rabbits, the “ideal” environment for fly strike can be very significantly reduced. On a lighter note, to our local poultry keepers, from the APHA “AVIAN INFLUENZA ZONES have been lifted in both England & Wales. All bird keepers should continue to maintain good biosecurity to help prevent the outbreak or spread of diseases. More information on the gov.uk, gov.wales and gov.scot websites.” So, before flying off, may I wish you a great month and until we meet again in August! Artist of the month Faringdon Information Centre is very happy to welcome Karen Spence as July’s Artist of the month. Karen is a local primary teacher and self taught artist. Over the years, she has tried and enjoyed many art and craft activities, particularly those involving sewing. As a military wife she has travelled the world and in her husband’s last posting, Naples, Italy, when it was too hot to quilt she took up painting. There was no shortage of inspiration in the city and surrounding countryside. Her early works were in ink and watercolour but now she also enjoys working in oils. When working in inks and watercolours, she enjoys painting old buildings, particularly those with wonky walls and difficult perspective and in oils she enjoys painting portraits, animals and still life. Examples of her work can be found at www.karenaspence.weebly.com and on the Faringdon art society www.faringdonartsociety.co.uk/karen-spence.html Come along to the Information Centre in the Pump House to view Karen’s work. Evocative descriptions of a distillery and the landscape it inhabits can help to form a bond with the whisky it produces and this was certainly the case when Matt Chambers recently presented a tasting for us which featured four whiskies from the Glenglassaugh distillery. Matt’s talk of the ‘brutalist architecture’ of the buildings and his experience of being exposed to the elemental nature of the coastal setting on the Moray Firth, within a stone’s throw of the North Sea, certainly painted a picture of where the whisky we tasted was made and brought the whisky more fully to life. Built in 1875, Glenglassaugh has had a chequered history. After initial success, several changes in ownership, followed by a downturn in the demand for whisky, led to it closing in 1907. However, in the late 1950s the majority of the buildings on site were rebuilt (hence the ‘brutalist architecture’) and the distillery reopened but closed again in 1986 because the whisky was thought to be too complex for the blends it was intended to be used for. However, in 2008 it was revived by the Glenglassaugh Distillery Company and two further changes of owner since then have continued its legacy of producing quality whisky. It is currently owned by Brown-Forman, who acquired it, along with BenRiach and GlenDronach distilleries, in 2016 from the BenRiach Distillery Co. Whilst the distillery and its location may be raw and uncompromising the whisky itself is anything but brutal! It is a medium weight, elegant dram that is described as ‘a Highland malt with seductive coastal charm’ and the Evolution expression that we started with was a perfect showcase for the spirit. Matured in bourbon casks it’s sweet fruitiness, vanilla and oak makes it an ideal summer whisky. Moving on, we then tasted the Torfa – a peated whisky, only produced in very limited quantities every year. The peat used for malting the barley is from the Eastern Highlands and was formed from compacted heather, fern, and bracken, resulting in a sweetly smoky dram rather than the seaweed and iodine imbued flavours to be found in many of the Islay whiskies. It was well balanced with enough peat to satisfy and would be a good introductory malt for those not sure about full on bonfire flavours. Our next treats were two of the first wood finish expressions to be produced by the distillery. The PX finish starts life in bourbon cask and then spends about a year in Pedro Ximenez casks to produce a rich, warm and sweet whisky (think raisins and dark brown sugar), that is multi layered and finishes on a note of liquorice. The Peated Portwood (finished in ruby port pipes) was my favourite of the night, with the peat blending harmoniously with the port to give an aromatic, smoky and fruity whisky with notes of barley sugar – just luscious! LOTUS INDIA ADVENTURES India travel is life-changing. There's few countries you can visit for two weeks and return home, your heart and mind slightly rewired. I've witnessed this first hand many times on the tours I run. An anxious man once booked along with his wife - "she's phobic of dirt" he whispered, "do you think she'll be ok?" This was a cause for concern, but once she'd entered Old Delhi's ancient labyrinthine streets all fears and phobia's seemed to vanish to dust. She drank chai in the market from little earthen cups and wondered barefoot around the temple with the rest of us. Indeed, when we stayed with villagers in the magical riverside town of Orchha - with cows tethered outside the front door and the only water from a nearby well - she said she had never felt happier. I've seen other people return to the UK and quit jobs, change their life direction - something deep inside inherently changed by their experiences. You see India turns all we know about life upside down. We experience stillness and peace amongst apparent chaos, incomparable richness amidst seeming poverty, and everywhere we turn we see life. A teeming, flowing sense of life that we rarely see in the west, and it feels amazing. It's a blessing taking groups to India and showing them what I have come to know and love about this country. I run the tour with my partner Hari who is from the ancient kingdom of Hampi in south India. Our journeys are designed to give you an insiders glimpse of this incredible country. We largely stay off the main tourist trail and keep group sizes small... We chose hotels that are very much part of the experience eco hotels, family-run boutiques, converted maharajas palaces packed with history - places where you can learn more about India's rich and diverse culture. Whilst each trip will include many wonderful experiences - tiger safaris, dawn-bird spotting treks, yoga on the beach, tours of temples and palaces - we generally like to keep the pace and feel of the tours very relaxed - maintaining the sense of freedom and wonder you might feel as an independent traveler. After all, it is those moments where you find yourself chatting to villagers then being spontaneously invited into their home for chai, or wandering alone, slightly lost, through the bazaar or simply sitting on your veranda watching the sun setting that you will get a true sense of what India means to you. Lotus India Adventures are running a journey through "Hidden Rajasthan" this November or your can experience "Undiscovered South India" next February when we will journey through northern Kerala, Karnataka and south Goa. Healthy Living!

Is our own wellness bigger than us? Should we be considering the bigger picture when it comes down to our own wellness and health and our own weight? ‘Wellness is bigger than any individual’s journey’. A lot of medicines, nutrition and exercise programmes are much more personalised now. We are demanding, as individuals, a higher quality product which considers sustainability when we purchase, take part in, or recommend products to improve our health and vitality. Recently there was an amazing response to David Attenborough when he showed us the disastrous effect of plastic on the environment and the creatures living in it. Maybe our priorities are now shifting to not only taking care of ourselves but one another and our planet too. Those passionate about personal wellness are much more likely to be aware of the effect of our actions on our surroundings and those around us. We consider ● The quality of the food we eat and where it comes from ● The effect food has on our body and the environment ● The cost to us and the cost to our environment ● How much food we waste and how we dispose of packaging (or don’t use it in the first place!) All the above impact how we behave (I hope!). Our actions have a far-reaching effect beyond our own personal health. Taking responsibility for ourselves, how we eat, what we eat and how we move is so important to us – and it shapes not only our health and bodies but also the environment. Looking after our skin is an example where it is best done through quality nutrition, good hydration (drinking plenty of water!) and protecting it with moisturisers and sun cream. However, we are now considering how our skin care affects the environment too - plastic beads that exfoliate must go somewhere when we wash them down the drain! There are always affordable environmentally friendly alternatives out there if we take the time to look for them. Considering the environment and others whilst targeting our own health and wellbeing is all about taking responsibility. Even though it can raise complicated issues it is predominantly your own actions that make you and others the way we are. Your decisions alone and not the decisions of others are a factor when it comes to what we eat, the amount we move and the degree we affect the planet. Once again, making a difference is down to you! We are lucky enough to live in a country where we are free to choose our path so choose wisely. Take the opportunity and make that difference. Take personal ownership of your food, drink and exercise! Rich Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com

Museum exhibition to open in Faringdon A new exhibition ‘Hospital: Faringdon’s Pump House in WWI’ will open in the Pump House, Faringdon, on August 17th, 2018. The exhibition will feature previously unseen items from Lord Faringdon’s personal collection, which have been in storage at Buscot Park. His grandmother, Lady Violet Henderson, was a registered nurse caring for her husband, brother, father and uncle, who had been wounded in the Boer War (1899-1902). With the onset of war, she took the decision to set up an Auxiliary Red Cross Hospital at her home, Kitemore House at Shellingford, where she and four nurses cared for wounded ‘inmates’. The hospital was transferred to The Pump House in Faringdon during the First World War. Sally Thurston, Clerk to Faringdon Town Council, says ‘the Town Council are very excited to be working with Buscot Park and The Company Curator to develop this museum exhibition in the centre of Faringdon. Our residents have long wanted to see a dedicated museum, that celebrates Faringdon’s rich and diverse history. This will be the first step in realising that ambition.’ The exhibition is being curated by Faith Carpenter, Director of The Company Curator, with the support of Faringdon Town Council and Buscot Park Estate. Faith would like to involve local residents and to show stories and items with local importance. “We are asking anyone who has items connected with Faringdon’s hospital in WW1 if they would like to lend them to have them displayed, or to tell us their stories to see if they would be suitable for featuring in the exhibition. It will be lovely to be able to show items from Faringdon in the exhibition and to tell the stories of those involved.” If you have a story, photograph or an item connected with the Red Cross Auxiliary Hospitals at the Pump House in Faringdon or Kitemore, please email heritage.assets@thecompanycurator.co.uk. The exhibition will run from August 18th, 2018 for approximately six months. Faith Carpenter Faith Carpenter MA heritage.assets@thecompanycurator.co.uk www.thecompanycurator.co.uk 07842 320691

By Clover Stroud It’s been a funny old six months. On the one hand I had crushing personal losses – with my beloved dog Willow and my sister-in-law Maureen both passing away within months of each other. On the other hand I’ve reached swoony heights in my work life, with Olympus, the global camera company, agreeing to sponsor an art gallery space for my company, the After Nyne Creative Services Group, in London. Workwise, this is everything I ever wanted and envisaged when I left the civil service to move into the creative sector all those years ago. All of those nights spent in torment wondering whether the company would ever break through, would I ever make any money again, should I just go and get another job - were worth it. I’m currently working in London five days a week in preparation for our debut exhibition with Olympus and I’m exhausted…but have never been happier in my life. I thrive under pressure, being as I am, solution focused and not afraid of hard work.
I think about this contrast between what has been great in my work life and what has been difficult in my personal life often at the moment, and was very pleased when Clover Stroud’s memoir The Wild Other came into my life a few weeks ago. It seemed like fate that I felt the strength of Clover riding through adversity (literally) when I was going through tumultuous times. Clover – journalist, writer, and Faringdon local – had an idyllic childhood that was torn at the seams when her mother had a terrible riding accident and was left incapacitated on almost all fronts. The wrench of this tragedy sent her into a whirlwind of travel and turmoil until she found her peace with the love of her life, her five children and life in the shadow of Uffington’s white horse. Her memoir is brave and frank and I felt the wind of her courage beside me every time I picked it up. She writes with candour and conviction, and one can’t help but come away from it feeling strengthened and open to adventures that formerly lay beyond our expectations. A bracing shot of literary vodka that makes your senses sing. The Wild Other is available from all good bookshops

Popping the Cork! After many years and many stories of vinous delights, the time has now come for me to ‘retire’ from writing the Advertiser’s Wine Review. How best to mark such an occasion? With bubbles, of course! I’m pretty sure that many of you (as indeed I do too) refer to said bubbles to the one and only Prosecco. It is, without a doubt, the big name in sparkling wine. Last year, it was reported that in 2016, British Prosecco fans guzzled a staggering 112.7 million bottles (OK, so I had a bit of help from my friends!!). You can guarantee that this number will only be set to rise. But what if you tire of Prosecco (seriously?) – what are the alternatives? You’ll be pleased to know that there are a host of equally (if not better) well priced, readily available alternatives beginning to emerge in the marketplace. Many of them have been around for many years, shadows of Prosecco’s limelight. French Regional Sparkling Wine Why: Representing excellent value for money as it’s produced outside the regions and classifications of better-known areas such as Champagne, regional sparkling wine can show all the quality at a quarter of the price tag of some better-known alternatives. Suggestion: Aldi’s Cremant du Jura NV £7.99 Tasting notes: Floral, fruity finish with hints of brioche. Perfect for Summer. Amazing value. Buy British! English Sparkling Wine Why: Our home-grown sparkling wine offerings are a booming, multi award winning world of exciting opportunities. Cut down on food miles, support our wine making industry and explore the amazing things Britain has to offer! Suggestion: Tesco finest English Sparkling Brut NV £18.00 (online) Tasting notes: Elegant bouquet of apple and citrus, with brioche on the finish. Cava Brut NV Why: Cava can only be produced by the ‘traditional method’ used in Champagne Production. These wines are great value and tend to be crisp, citrus and apple-flavoured, with a touch of richness and lovely fresh acidity. Suggestion: Aldi’s Contevedo Cava Gold NV £4.99 (online) Tasting notes: Light, citrus and pear notes with crisp acidity. A crowd pleaser. So there you have it, folks! I’m off to teach wine appreciation at Marlborough Summer School, planning the next wine dinner (Sadlers, Thursday October 11th) and launching a new website. Your new wine columnist from next month is Ian Lloyd, who has also studied with the Wines & Spirits Association and is a kindred wine enthusiast. I wish Ian well and look forward to trying new wines whilst putting my feet up reading the wine review! Thank you Donna You will be very missed! Lou :) x
