Business Update This month’s column is focused on the Faringdon Business Plan. The purpose of this document is to map out how Faringdon and its business community can grow and prosper between now and 2022.

The plan has been based on contributions from attendees at an open meeting in March, the Vale of White Horse District Council and other interested parties. The next stage is to gather further comments which will help inform the final document.

We all know that Faringdon has much to offer and lots of good things going on and the Faringdon Business Plan seeks to improve on these.

It already recognises several initial priorities such as investing in improvements to the environment and infrastructure, particularly developing a car parking strategy in the town centre, improving signage and technology services such as town centre Wi-Fi. Another thread is improving the look of the town, making it more attractive to visitors and developing a strategy to ensure a good mix of business.

The projects currently come under three headings - town vitality, supporting existing (and any new) businesses and Faringdon as a destination for visitors. The list of projects could go on but in reality there is a finite resource of time, money and people.

So far there has been a relatively small number of people working on the draft document and we would urge anyone with an interest in Faringdon’s future or their business’ prosperity in Faringdon, to have a look at it and offer constructive comment through the Chamber of Commerce, the Faringdon Business Group or direct to Karen Roberts at the Town Council. A copy of the draft can be obtained from any of the above.

An event to look forward to this month is the Young Traders Market on

Saturday 17th June. This was very successful last year and will hopefully inspire future entrepreneurs.

We were lucky to have John Kirk from Home Instead with us and more of his very interesting presentation on ‘Care or Crisis’ later in the article.

As everyone grabbed their first tea / coffee we quickly added a couple of sets to the table so that everyone had a place for breakfast.

Our 60-second round revealed items such as the ‘Horrid Handbook’, a description given by a client of Anna Gage to the HR Departments guide which once read by the client proved to be very useful and WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING SERVICES informative. It was good to hear that Lawrence Harrison from LHA All Gas Work Accountants and Simon Brusch from Cloud Perfect were collaborating on a project and this is a perfect example of the All Plumbing Work 579798 benefits of networking for small businesses.

Bathrooms Jon Kirk gave us an excellent talk entitled ‘Care or Crisis’. He gave us Underfloor Heating some very useful guidelines or indicators that would help identify LPG Gas when someone, be they family or friend, is approaching the point where a care service should be considered. Each of his seven Gas Appliances indicators are topics where a need for support or help indicate that Boiler Servicing action should be considered and include: socialisation; medication; Central Heating diet and nutrition; daily activities; dementia; continence Landlord Cert's management and possible specialist nursing. His message was brilliantly summarised in the phrase ‘fix the roof while the sun is SPECIALISING IN BOILER shining’. We are very grateful to him for such and interesting talk CHANGES AND SYSTEM and answering many questions.

A request this week for a whisky as a present for someone who likes the ‘West Coast islands’ style reinforced the difficulties of classifying whiskies by regions. The SWA classify all the Island whiskies apart from Islay as Highland but as the Highland region itself is a large and diverse geographical area (stretching from the Highland line north of Glasgow to the tip of Scotland, and from the West coast to the East but excluding the Speyside area) you can imagine the great diversity of styles that can be found when you also include all the Scottish Islands.

The West Coast islands could be taken to include Arran, Jura, Mull, and Skye, plus the other new distilleries that are being established throughout the Hebrides. However, a further complication presents itself in interpreting what an individual includes in their personal interpretation of ‘West Coast Island’, as I suspect that for most people Islay would be included in the list.

Even narrowing the choice down to one island can still be no less enlightening as although whisky from the Arran distillery can be light and fruity, like many distilleries nowadays it is also catering for those who like peaty whisky with its Machrie Moor expression. Likewise, both the Isle of Jura distillery and the Isle of Mull distillery produce peated and unpeated versions of their whisky, with Jura’s Prophecy being so peaty as to give even an Islay malt a run for its money!

From our point of view flavour descriptors can be much more important than a simple regional preference. Does someone like peated or unpeated whiskies? Is there a preference for the rich, fruit cake flavours that European cask maturation brings or for the vanilla spiciness of an American oak cask? This seems increasingly relevant nowadays as more distilleries are introducing variants to their ranges which they hope will enable whisky drinkers to come closer to their ideal dram. For example, the Kilchoman distillery on Islay has introduced a new whisky to its core range of peated whiskies that means you can now choose between a whisky that offers a high proportion of bourbon cask maturation or one that has a high proportion of sherry cask maturation (although, believe me, that can cause domestic disharmony when you have a couple trying to choose one bottle to share!).

As this understandable desire by distilleries to experiment and provide greater variety to their customers becomes more widespread then it is easy to see that the role of the regions as an indication of whisky style will be ever more fraught. However, perhaps there is still a role for whisky regions, it’s just that it may be that flavour profile and style might not play such a prominent part in their definition.

The Wicked Boy

By Kate Summerscale Having gone back into my archive for last month’s review of Patrick Hamilton’s ‘Hangover Square’, I was eager to absorb myself in something new.

I never need an excuse to wander the aisles of bookstores.

Indeed I consider it one of life’s greatest pleasures, and humbled that this column gives me an outlet for what has been the greatest love affair of my entire life – my love of the written word. I’m blessed to be able to share this love with readers of the Faringdon Advertiser each month.

My journey for this column this month took me in two different directions, with varying degrees of satisfaction. I had heard masses of hype about Crisis, the debut novel by BBC Security Correspondent Frank Gardner before I even picked it up.

This ‘explosive’ Sunday Times bestseller had all the ingredients of something I would love – the international terror plot, the steadfast and mysterious hero and the knowledge of an author who knows more about global security issues than anyone could ever know. Gardner, lest we forget, was almost killed when he and his cameraman were ambushed by terrorists in Saudi Arabia in 2004. His cameraman was killed, and Gardner was left paralysed with eleven bullet wounds. So I had high hopes.

But I didn’t love it. There was a distinct drop in my attention span between the first part of the book and the middle. The steadfast mysterious hero ended up having very little personality, his girlfriend – who Gardner tries to mould into being an action hero in her own right – is just annoying. The supporting characters are clichés. The ‘tightly-wound’ plot ends up going nowhere, really. And the writing itself is really….not that good.

Crisis is the first in the ‘Luke Carlton’ series, and I’m not sure I would be compelled to give the next one a go. For a much better option in this genre see Terry Hayes’ masterful I Am Pilgrim.

Speaking of masterful, my other read this month had me singing its praises from the rooftops. Kate Summerscale – author of the runaway success The Suspicions of Mr Whicher – has turned her hand to the true-life story of boy killer Robert Coombes in The Wicked Boy. Impeccably researched, brilliantly written and ultimately a poignant tale of the power of redemption, I couldn’t recommend it more highly. It’s given me every reason I need to revisit the author’s earlier works, which I hope you will too.

Hello and welcome to June – a warmer, wetter month than the one just gone, perhaps! Cuckoo, swallow, swift and house martins are truly back in action again as Summer flies in. The frosts in late April and early May have probably created low-quantity wine for this year’s vintage having reduced the apple crop by chilling, also the “grounding” of many a cold bee and other pollinators? Our bird table seems just as busy, with slight seasonal species variations.

When visiting the Teifi Marshes near Cilgerran in Cardiganshire. Seeing is believing – a small herd of water buffalo are going where no dry wellie-boot can go, deep into the muddy waters to act as conservation volunteers to remove – by eating, tearing or trampling – undergrowth that would otherwise swamp, (sorry, open waters and pools where birds, dragonflies and toads like to feed and breed) just think of the variety and rich flavoured ice cream and mozzarella possible, if these water buffalo could be milked?

These buffalo have to be strong and sure footed; and so should dogs in the UK! The numbers of dogs that are lame in the UK is too high, and of course cats show behavioural changes associated with arthritis in different ways. The Royal Veterinary College Vet Compass, survey results published in 2013 show all musculo-skeletal problems as 15% in a randomised survey of nearly 4000 dogs in 89 participating centres. Nearly half are arthritis and osteo-arthritis. The UK dog population is 8,760,000 (PFMA.org.uk 2016 data). 15% of that is over 1.3 million dogs affected with arthritis, if the extrapolation is statistically valid!

I am so pleased that we have had a good response to the combination of medical and best complementary therapies that we are able to offer. I may be repeating myself, but so much can be done, starting from very early recognition by an owner on to managing OA in a very positive and meaningful way. We offer two excellent brands of joint support, use Class 4 laser therapy, make appointments for our weekly Physiotherapist, Nicky, and refer to hydrotherapy locally. We also are planning a chiropractic once-weekly clinic too. We are also fully prepared to e-mail our digital radiographs or refer the entire real dog or cat to local specialists, in referral practices or veterinary hospitals not too far away (including Hertfordshire). We also stock a product licensed for use by owners who wish to keep up with their rejuvenated dog!

Current worries have included the CRGV – Alabama Rot – alert. There is a veterinary conference as I write, hosted by Anderson Moores, through vet David Walker, to bring together experts in the field researching or treating this micro-embolic disease process. There is NO pattern across the UK; the cause has been there all the time but not recognised for what it was. The skin sores are also the result of micro-clotting in the localised skin blood vessels, usually below the elbow and the knee (stifle).

Washing the lower limbs after walks, especially in woodland mud, is advised but NOT guaranteed to work – it is a reasonable precaution that is unproven but will naturally do no harm. The webbing of the feet, the toes as well, can be more easily inspected for signs of sores every time.

In less than three days the dog may start to be in renal failure, lethargic, off food and possibly vomiting (please note that such signs are common to other less serious conditions). Sometimes this happens without the skin sores. The cause of CRGV is not clearly known but research in both fish and human medical fields is also being studied. CRGV may be the result of an environmental trigger in a dog with an intrinsic, genetic disposition to the disease. None other than one of a group of dogs in the same affected household, playing and living in the same area of woodland have been affected.

The conference may in fact enable more funding to be given to research and treatment. For all our clients naturally wishing to know more about this complex disease, you are always welcome to contact us.

Faringdon Photography Ian Campbell It all started with my mother’s 90th birthday. What do you get a nonagenarian that they don’t already have? Then a passing comment sparked an idea - she had many old photographs (dating back to the 1920’s) that she loved looking at but they were badly damaged, with creases and parts missing, and she was worried about damaging them further by touching them. I thought that a photo book of all her favourite, restored, photos would be a good idea and then she could enjoy them without worrying. She loved the book and I discovered I had a flair for digitally restoring photographs and so Faringdon Photography was born.

So what is on offer? Old photographs stuffed in a drawer do not fair well and can end up getting cut, ripped, stained and scratched. Yet they are memories and, once they are gone, they can’t be replaced. I deal with bringing these memories back to you.

Firstly, the photograph is scanned, thereby ensuring your original is safe. Then I work on the scanned image removing scratches and stains, rebuilding cuts and even entire missing sections and wording. Once happy with the final image I then print it on a professional printer ensuring the best possible finish. I can also frame the print or produce a photo book of your memories where your photographs are printed directly onto the paper. If you have friends and family around the world they can enjoy seeing your photos too, on a private page on my website www.faringdonphotography.co.uk.

The photos show before and after images of both a 1922 badly creased, stained and ripped photograph and a 1928 newspaper cutting that had been in someone’s wallet for years. In the case of the newspaper cutting, I scanned it, restored the damaged picture and text and then printed and framed the finished article with the original cutting mounted by the side.

What better way to enjoy the longer days and improve your health than to get out on your bike!

Entries are now open for the 5th Farcycles Sportive on Saturday 29th July, coinciding with the Follyfest Art and Music Festival.

There are 3 rides of different lengths to suit all levels of cyclist.

We would like to encourage as many local people as possible to join in - if you are new to cycling or lapsed, then the Gentle Challenge - 35 miles of spectacular rolling Cotswold countryside - should be within your grasp. For those who cycle regularly the Full Monty - 70 miles of even more breath-taking countryside will be a definite challenge. And for the serious cyclists the Epic Test - 100 miles with plenty of hills of both the Downs and the Cotswolds - is a formidable test.

The event is organised by the Farcycles, Faringdon's cycling group, who aim to make it a most enjoyable occasion for everyone. The signposted routes are carefully chosen to use country lanes and avoid main roads, making the most of the beautiful countryside surrounding our town.

Friendly marshalls will give encouragement as you pass by! There are food-stops along the way with quality home-made sustenance and refreshment, and a well-deserved lunch at the finish.

There is currently a national initiative to get more ladies cycling.

It was very encouraging therefore that last year over half the participants in the 35-mile sportive were women and there were a fair number of children too. A quarter of those in the 70-mile event were female. We would like to see that proportion increase this year.

So rise to the challenge, improve your fitness and health, shed some pounds, and generally feel better. If you need company and motivation then Farcycles offers regular cycling in groups.

Every Sunday at 11am, we meet under the Old Town Hall in Faringdon Market Place, for a gentle 10-15 miles on roads and tracks (suitable for hybrid-type bikes). On Saturdays there are road rides of 20-25 and 40-45 miles starting at 9am in the same place. There is always a nominated rider in the groups who ensures no-one gets left behind.

With the funds raised from the sportive event, Farcycles aim to improve the local cycling environment with safer cycling routes in and around Faringdon. Indeed Farcycles has recently completed a cycle path to connect to the Folly Sports Park from the Folly View development.

We are happy to accept that we compete in an open market place and like to think our clients choose to use us on our merits. Equally we accept that some home owners look to use the on-line only agents based largely we suspect on the perceived cost saving they purport to offer.

Our issue with online agents is not about competition; it is that for our clients and other sellers they make the whole moving process much more stressful and uncertain than it already is.

As a traditional estate agent, we’re rewarded upon a successful sale. Unless we work hard to find a buyer, negotiate the best price and then see the sale through to completion we do not get paid.

Online estate agents are paid at the point of instruction irrespective of whether they facilitate a successful sale. Their business model is based on securing instructions, not selling properties. So where is the motivation to undertake any more work on the instruction beyond the bare minimum?

Most property sales are linked with other connected sales – the sales “chain”. It is extremely rare to have just one buyer and seller in a transaction and much more common to have at least one other property involved, sometimes several above and/or below the property we are selling. A single property sale can be complex enough in its own right but add in others which then all have to exchange and complete on the same dates, throw in differing personal commitments of those involved and then include differing standards of conveyancers and you can have a very challenging situation.

Good traditional agents work hard to manage the sales chain. We cajole, plead and re-assure to help ensure it all comes together in the end. We do it because it’s a fundamental part of our service to our clients: to support them throughout the whole sales process. It is also a fundamental part of the traditional estate agents business model. We are paid on results.

But now we have to include into this mix the online agent, noticeable by their absence. Can we find someone within these companies to take responsibility for their client’s property, or to even answer the phone? No. This means that we are often unable to verify a prospective buyers sale position, we are unable to establish a link with the buyer below them and we are unable to establish what issues might be arising with the chain around the sale which then jeopardises the rest of the those in the chain. As the saying goes, a chain is only as strong as the weakest link and online agents, through their lack of interest in the sales process, create a very weak link.

So I suspect we are not alone in warning our clients about the dangers of accepting an offer from a buyer selling through one of the online agents. The process of selling a home can be stressful enough without online agents making it even more so.

Supermarket Wine How to buy supermarket wine that’s any good.

We now have a selection here in Faringdon. But whilst on the weekly/biweekly or tri-weekly shop, what should you go for when buying wine?

If you have time for a little research prior to your grocery shop, download an App. We live in the age where there’s pretty much an App for everything and this is no exception. The Supermarket Wine App is 99p that will be well invested if it saves you from the impulse buy of something repulsive! It gives you the latest reviews from Wine Writers as well as good offers to be found from all the leading Supermarkets.

Check out website's. Supermarkets often have a wine section on their website that will provide more in depth information about their wines than you will find on the shop floor. Other website's worth a visit include www.bringabottle.co.uk that compares prices of wines, beers and spirits available on the High Street.

Let others try it first! I like to ask people their opinions on what they’ve purchased and liked before, especially when loitering in the wine aisle of a supermarket (be warned)! Not only is it interesting, but you also save yourself from making an unpalatable wine decision.

Supermarkets often offer information via their shelf ticketing. Rather than doing a whirlwind ‘drive by’ with your trolley, schedule a bit of time to browse and read. You will be provided with information such as flavours, scale of dryness-sweetness and sometimes suggested food pairings.

Be wary of heavy discounting. Some wines always appear to be on ‘special.’ It makes you wonder if they are worth the full price in the first place.

Take advantage of the 25% discount on 6 bottles offer. This is genuine and what you save you can upgrade, buying a wine of a higher price point.

Don’t get fooled by the medals. The pretty gold stickers on bottles are usually indicative of awards the wine has won.

Check which year it was awarded. It may be that the producer is claiming an accolade it was awarded 5 years ago!

Lastly, don’t be afraid to try something new!

The Game of Weight Loss If Weight Watchers can turn something as unpleasant as dieting into a playful activity, why can’t you?

I firmly believe that if your mind-set is right then you can succeed. If it’s not right you will have a tendency to give up, cheat or selfsabotage. These habits (or negative thought patterns) are the real reason you struggle to lose weight.

We all know the basics of weight loss: Ÿ Eat a balanced diet and take simple regular exercise - you will lose weight. Ÿ Eat fewer calories than you use every day - you will lose weight. Ÿ Change your diet, eat more greens and fibre cut out processed foods and sweets - you will lose weight.

It’s so simple really – you know it is…so why don’t you do it?

Something always happens to mess it up.

You struggle, you crave for your old foods – and so you cheat! Then because you feel bad about cheating you give up! Before long you’re back to your old ways and it’s your old ways that got you into trouble in the first place. If this is what you do then it is more of a mind-set problem than a knowledge problem. I would argue that you may know what to do to lose weight but it’s more a case of you are not really prepared to do it for long enough to see sustainable results.

You are playing the game of weight loss (for a short period of time) but are you sure you want to win it?

If you treat weight loss like a game it has to be one that you’re prepared to play for life and one that you are going to win at all costs.

The reason you will fail at weight loss is because, instead of treating it as a fun challenge, you treat it from the outset as something you don’t really want to do. And are you prepared to do anything it takes to win? It’s too easy to be side tracked by another quicker option than the one you are doing, or simply not do what is actually needed.

The key components of a game are goals, rules, a challenge and interaction. A game has freedoms, barriers and purposes – games are fun. Why not apply some of these things to your lifestyle changes?

Firstly, you must ask yourself if you really want to play the game? By that I mean – do you REALLY want to do it? Those who don’t get results are those who are not committed to playing the game, sticking to its rules, who are not really up for the challenge or do not find it fun.

What are your true goals? You need to know what you want – how do you want to look? – what weight do you want to be? – what’s your ideal shape? Be specific – being vague won’t get you results.

Goals should be written down.

Set some rules of the game. ‘5 days a week I will eat mainly protein and vegetables and weekends I will allow a few treats’. Or maybe it’s about making one positive change to your food each week. If you have a bad day then forget about it and move on – make the next day a better one. Set some realistic rules and stick to them.

Maybe the challenge might be losing a certain number of lbs each week until you meet your goal. It could be about doing better than a friend. Interacting with others gives motivation and support and will help you get through the bad times - as there will always be some!

Most games have more than one player, interaction is good for you and it’s what makes it fun.

Identify the barriers and overcome them. There is always a way through. Remember if there were no barriers it wouldn’t really be a game. Have fun with it - after all it is a game – you can win if you put your mind to it.

All barriers can be overcome if you really want to achieve your goals.

Go on - do it! Enjoy the results.
