Business Update The dust has finally settled following the general election. Now only time will tell if they will deliver on their promises to the Nation. There are changes in the District Councillors and our new team of Town councillors have been sworn in. Bethia Thomas is heading up the new and enthusiastic Town team with their challenging list of objectives. The Chamber of Commerce is also undergoing changes. The committee is expanding; business links are being forged with neighbouring towns and consultations with other agencies are proving to be positive to the future of Faringdon. The Joint Economic Forum has announced some new projects to progress closer to their vision of a more attractive Faringdon I recommend you check them out on their website. Monthly markets are proving popular, attracting new stall holders and increasing Saturday footfall in the town. A program of future markets has been published on the community website. Anyone wishing to utilise a stall at future markets should contact the Town team coordinator. Next month sees the town promoting independent retailers. The Chamber will be showcasing the SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) businesses in conjunction with this event. If you would like to be part of this promotion then please contact me at: President@faringdonchamberofcommerce.co.uk. All in all I think we have exciting times ahead and I am looking forward to working with all the new organisations fulfilling our aims and visions. Don’t forget to take a look at the revised Faringdon Neighbourhood Plan which now includes a local green spaces policy. It is now open for consultation until 26th June. You can view the document at www.faringdontowncouncil.gov.uk (follow the “News” tab) and comments can be lodged using the online form. If you prefer hard copies head for the Town Council offices or the library. Please take part in this important process and make your voice heard.

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Our meeting on 11th May saw a good turnout with some new members, and some members who had not been able to attend for some time. The 60 second round caught several ‘regulars’ by surprise for one reason or another but we safely got round the table before finishing with a Nursery Rhyme from our resident poet. Angie Major from Blueberry Business then treated us to a trip through the ‘Cloud’ and we emerged with a much clearer vision of how this, together with other software, can help us manage our businesses more effectively. Angie gave us an excellent presentation on the benefits of using the ‘Cloud’ and illustrated each of them with her personal experience and recommendation. We were told how even with frustratingly slow internet connections the ‘Cloud’ offers advantages in efficiency and integration for one or multiple users. Subscription to this sort of service is affordable and reliable. Angie then moved on to her ‘specialist topic’ Xero – bookkeeping and accounting software. No-one could doubt her enthusiasm for Xero, and she generously offered to give a full demo to anyone who is interested in finding out more about this software. Angie told us that there were a lot of other applications that could integrate with Xero including mileage recorders for expense claims, and hourly billing tools. Her recommendation however was that we should research and do our homework to make sure the software application is right for our individual needs before purchase. Date of next FBBC Meeting Mon 1 st June 2015

0 0 0 1 If you don’t get much chance to spend quality time with your Dad then make the effort this Father’s Day, June 21st and sit down with him to share a dram or two and ponder on the meaning of life in a way that whisky seems to facilitate particularly well. There are so many great drams available nowadays, that there is bound to be something you will be able to ‘Share and Enjoy’ as the good folk at Compass Box say. Talking of Compass Box, if your Dad normally has very traditional tastes in whisky then why not introduce him to something new that he probably wouldn’t buy for himself. Founded by John Glaser, Compass Box is a small, independent, specialist whisky company who make some fabulous whiskies through the art of blending and vatting. Individual casks of quality whiskies from different distilleries are specially selected for which they can bring to a particular blend, thus allowing Compass Box to cover the spectrum of Scotch whisky styles and resulting in small batch whiskies with great flavour profiles. Although contemporary in approach Compass Box maintain and expand the tradition that drinking whisky should be a pleasure. With a signature style that they describe as having an underlying richness, sweetness, and softness their range has something for everyone – from the delightful silkiness of Asyla through the spicy delights of the Spice Tree right up to the rich smokiness of the Peat Monster or the Glasgow Blend, and of course we mustn’t forget the wonderfully indulgent Hedonism. For something a little more traditional, then have a look at whiskies from the Glenfarclas distillery. These quality single malts are produced by an independent family firm who are renowned for their use of sherry casks for maturation. The whiskies all tend to display characteristic sweet and spicy notes but in varying degrees of intensity, and different flavours come to the fore according to the age of the whisky. From the fresh, fruity 10 year old up to the rich, chocolaty 40 year old (and not forgetting the stonking cask strength 105 – which I love!) you’re bound to find a dram that will hit the right note. Worthy of particular mention is the latest addition to our shelves from Glenfarclas - the 17 year old. This smooth, spicy, malty and oaky dram with plenty of complexity will give ample opportunity for you to compare notes with your Dad whilst inducing a suitably convivial mood! Finally, don’t forget that there is a wealth of whiskies from all parts of the world – be it from Ireland (with its long tradition of distilling), to Japan (with its well established and increasingly popular whiskies) or from one of the newer kids on the block (such as Amrut from India or Zuidam from Holland) there are some really interesting contenders available that will stimulate conversation and promote harmonious filial relations.

DODIE ELLIS I grew up in the Lake District, surrounded by a rhythmic and wild landscape. My imagination was fired by those fells. Following a fight with cancer in my late twenties, the birth of one lovely son, the sad loss of another, I embarked on my creative journey and find joy and healing in my studio. I found an outlet as a freelance landscape photographer and illustrator for several years and now make cards from my photographs alongside painting. There is nothing quite like the fizzing energy of pursuing an idea and expressing it in the strong colours I love. For me, a scene or colour combination is the starting point to express something of myself. I find the sea and Cornwall particularly inspiring. I use acrylics, coloured inks, emulsion paint, watercolours, charcoal, pastel, pencil and ink – anything that comes to hand to express my love of life. dodieandsam@hotmail.com DELIA TAYLOR-BROOK Colour and texture are strong elements which inspire me, I like the intensity of colour that is possible, working with acrylics or a combination of watercolour and soft pastels. More recently, I have been experimenting with mixed media techniques, including collage, which increases the opportunity for interesting textural effects. My mosaic work also expresses my love of colour using a mixture of media including ceramic and glass tiles, crockery, china, beads and coloured glass. www.deliataylorbrookstudio.co.uk.

Let me introduce you to a couple of the more obscure varieties that you may never have heard of before; Koshu {Kho-shoo} This fresh and elegant variety resides in Japan where it holds the title of being the country’s signature white grape. It arrived in Japan around 1,000 years ago, via the Silk Road across Central Asia from the Caucasus to China. It produces wines that are floral and light with typical white flower and grapefruit characters. Xynisteri {Sin-ees-ter-ee} This Cypriot white grape variety grows on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountain range and accounts for almost a quarter of all plantings in Cyprus. It is blended with Mavro grapes to make the Cypriot dessert wine Commandaria, but also works well on its own, creating medium bodied wines with plenty of tropical fruit character. Falanghina {Fa-lan-ghee-nah} Named after the Roman method of vine cultivation known as falangs (translation: poles), Falanghina is an ancient variety brought to Italy from Greece. It became widespread in central then southern Italy, where today it thrives in the region of Campania. It has delicate floral and fruit aromas with zesty freshness and minerality. Agiorgitko {Ag-eore-ghit-ee-ko} Greece’s most widely planted red variety originates from Nemea and despite its opaque ruby colour, produces wines with soft tannins and characters that range from strawberry to sweet spice. It shows well as a varietal or blended with cabernet sauvignon. So as the weather (fingers crossed) gradually warms, enjoy the long summer evenings with a glass of Xynisteri or maybe an Agiorgitko! NEW CHEF! Mr John Brown Previously of Yolanda’s Great New Menu

Sitting outside in the evening sun is a real treat. Hopefully the weather will have turned warm enough for this to happen, will the sun ever come out? The light is often really beautiful in the evening, bathing our fair land in a low golden glow, it is often stunning. The act of getting the brolly out, a pretty crimplene tablecloth adorned with some delicious food, is just great and by all accounts, makes one feel rather chipper! There are many flavours, foods and ingredients that we associate with summer. Strawberries, mint, lemon and of course a drop of the old Pimms. With Wimbledon’s coming up very soon, 29th June to 12 July! It's great fun trying to turn classic food combinations into other things. For instance, lemon cake with gin drizzle. Or cream tea cupcakes. Experiment and have fun I say. But this time round the hero is going to be a Pimms jelly, its so very easy, there's no need to cheat. Serve in a lovely elegant glass for a dinner party dessert or pour into small jars or mini plastic tubs or cups and take on a picnic! You'll need leaf gelatine for this, available locally. First of all. Soak 5 leaves of sheet gelatine in cold water. It doesn't matter how much water, it's just to soften it. Then make up your Pimms to your liking, you'll need 700ml, so perhaps about 500ml lemonade or ginger ale lemonade mix with 200ml Pimms. Warm 75ml of this mixture, squeeze out the gelatine then add to the warm Pimms. Swirl in the pan to dissolve. Pour this into the rest of the Pimms stirring through out. Cool. Get your moulds ready then pour in the jelly mix. Add a few chopped strawberries and a mint leaf or 2 then chill until set. Serve with swathes of cold cream and some extra fruits. Enjoy… Lesley Holdship Hare in the Woods 07754 086316 facebook.com/hareinthewoods Twitter @hareinthewoods 7A Market Place,Faringdon SN7 7HL

Jolly Ramblings! | The Advertiser | page 13 | Welcome to Summer! Or was April our early one, I wonder? Whatever, things have now gone quieter, with Princess Charlotte’s safe arrival, the London Marathon, high winds, the General Election all passing by with great excitement and national emotions. So much to talk about, so I’d better get started, with VE Day music and recipes in the background as I write! A recent publication and a webinar on New Forest Syndrome has proved really interesting and informative. Under various titles, the syndrome’s been recognised for 30 years and current research is slowly narrowing the real cause down to the possibility of a pathological process similar to a medical condition of similar thromboembolic microangiopathy.(TMA). Don’t worry about the long names – here are some facts; 1. countrywide 2. a variety of dog breeds 3. most cases recorded between November and April 4. usually moves from ulcerating skin to acute kidney injury within 4 or 5 days but not all dogs progress to this stage 5. acute kidney injury can occur before any skin signs 6. sadly, almost 85% mortality 7. as yet, no known cause Please be reassured that much research and sourcing of funding is being carried out as I write. Ticks are another issue being tackled at the moment – There’s the Big Tick Project (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/news/2015/april/big-tick-project.html) for us to understand Lyme Disease, so often misdiagnosed as ME. “Vets across the UK are set to take part in the Big Tick Project, the largest nationwide collection of ticks from dogs in a bid to help scientists, led by Professor Richard Wall at the University of Bristol, track what is feared to be a growing threat to people and their dogs from tick-borne zoonotic diseases such as Lyme disease . Easy-to-use tick removal hooks are readily available everywhere, including your own veterinary practice. Put a spare kit in the car glove-box! Ticks moving around on people aren’t worried at all where they finally track down a blood vessel to drill down into. For our pets, there is a vaccine for Lyme Disease available – a triple injection course. I cannot stop repeating the advice to use one of two proven tick killing and repellent products alongside vigilance and removal within 24 hours to greatly reduce the risk of tick-borne disease when your family pets are being taken into continental Europe. One interesting piece of research was published recently by International Cat Care, plus vets working at Davies Veterinary Specialists and also through the UCL School of Pharmacy who used questionnaires sent all over the World, yes – World-wide!! To conclude that high-pitched or metallic sounds can trigger seizures in cats. The problem has been dubbed the Tom and Jerry Syndrome after the way this cartoon cat jumps when startled or injured. Innocently scrunching up aluminium foil for a cat to play with is one cause, I now understand! Even what I’m doing now, on the computer keyboard, or later on hammering a nail can cause these seizures, especially if the loudness increases. Definitely when hammering the keyboard! In a recent online newsletter from my supported Wildlife Research Institute in Ely, Massachusetts, an avian taste test was being carried out on two well-known varieties of cereals and basic sunflower seeds. I’ve noticed a great number of goldfinches and nuthatches feeding on our bird table and apparently the same seeds are very popular over in Ely, in black-bear country, along with red squirrels and downy and hairy woodpeckers. Small world. As I write, next week is Mental Health Awareness Week, focusing on “mindfulness”. Mindfulness is the personal ability to concentrate on the present and not getting stuck in the past or worrying about the future. Some examples of this, where the passage of time simply flies past unnoticed, could be watching a really good film, feeding and caring for animals on the farm, going for a long walk totally absorbed in the sights, sounds and smells, a very exciting, gripping book or listening totally absorbed by the melody, words and rhythm of a song on the radio….. So mindfulness is NOT about emptying your mind of thoughts and “zoning out”; it can mean different things to different people. Mindfulness helps that person to observe how they think and feel about their experiences, providing the mental tool and confidence to change the way stressful situations can be recognised and managed, giving everyone a valuable tool to stay mentally healthy. Look at http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/our-work/mentalhealthawarenessweek/ On a much lighter but equally uplifting note to close this month, we were travelling back from Welsh family almost home on the A420 and gradually were left driving behind a racing-green UK classic car, with the two occupants talking and waving their arms about (even the driver!), travelling at a suitably dignified speed when the third passenger popped up between the two seats and the folded-down hood. Black and white, hairy face – yes, a dog and wearing pink goggles, or swimming doggles…very suave and so humanely practical. Bravo!! Watch out for fairies in your bluebells and have a good June, enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of early summer in the countryside.

Can Chiropractic help in the Bedroom? I had this conversation with one of my FIRST chiropractic patients ever – She came in for her fourth treatment on a Monday, and after asking how her weekend was, her response was the last thing I was expecting: “You know, I didn’t mention this when we first met, but I thought something was seriously wrong with me – I’m a woman in my 30’s, and I just didn’t want to have ‘relations’ with my boyfriend because of the discomfort in my back. After having just a few treatments, it’s the first time in months that I’ve actually been in the mood. So, yes, I had an AWESOME weekend!” Now, I’m not suggesting I can achieve the same results for all of my patients regarding their ‘relations' with their significant other, but one of the main issues for her was the lack of quality sleep due to the discomfort she had been suffering, and the associated negative effects that created for her in other areas of her life. And she’s not alone! In fact, surveys have shown that between 40 and 60 percent of the general population has trouble sleeping. Apart from the discomfort of a painful condition, a host of other issues can keep a person from getting enough quality sleep such as daily stress and worries, pressures from job and family, and body aches and pains caused by uncomfortable beds or pillows. Sleep is critical to good health and functioning, so lack of it is a serious matter. Through it, our bodies recharge and renew for the next day's challenges. We all know we probably should be getting more sleep, but what should we be doing to improve our sleep? Here’s a few little known facts that can undermine your attempts: Ÿ Exercising in the evening too late will increase your heart rate and interfere with getting to sleep. Ÿ Wearing pyjama’s can prevent the body from cooling down sufficiently to enable restful sleep Light exposure in the evening, particularly the light emitted by TVs and computers, significantly interferes with the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone that signals sleep to the body. Chiropractic Care Can Help... If you experience pain and discomfort at night or have difficulty falling asleep, Chiropractors are trained to treat spinal problems that can interfere with a restful night's sleep. They can also offer nutritional and ergonomic advice that can help improve the quality of your sleep, taking a different, drug-free approach to sleeping problems. For more detailed advice about sleep issues including choosing the right pillow and mattress for you, call me for a brief informal chat on 07771 644510, or check out my website www.freedomchiropractic.co.uk, where you’ll find lots of interesting information and facts about how to keep your body healthy and at it’s best.

The Gifted Magpie achieves 'Best Gift Shop' in the Muddy Stilettos Awards 2015. Faringdon-based retailer, The Gifted Magpie is proud to have won the Best Gift Shop Award in the popular 2015 Muddy Stilettos Awards, celebrating fantastic places, spaces and businesses across Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Muddy Stilettos (www.muddystilettos.co.uk) is the awardwinning urban guide to the countryside, highlighting all the very best ways to upgrade your downtime in Bucks & Oxon, written by national journalist Hero Brown (Independent, Observer, Red, Marie Claire, Elle). Over the past few months, readers of the award-winning Muddy Stilettos blog have been nominating their favourite independent businesses across both Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire in 25 different categories. Other businesses shortlisted in the Best Gift Shop category included Burford Garden Centre and From in Thame. Commenting on winning a Muddy Stiletto Award, Rachel, Owner of The Gifted Magpie says:

“I am overjoyed and proud to receive this award. I am so grateful to my customers, suppliers, friends and family who nominated and voted - their support has been overwhelming. I am also delighted that another shop in Faringdon, 'Hare In The Woods' has been shortlisted for Best Deli - it is very encouraging that other businesses have such great support and are thriving in this town." Hero Brown, founder of the Muddy Stilettos blog adds: “I set up these awards to give local lifestyle businesses and their customers a chance to shout about how brilliant they are. Now in their second year, the Awards have been overwhelmingly successful, and it’s been very inspiring to discover just how many wonderful places there are in our local area.” The Gifted Magpie has been open for just over two years, selling an array of beautiful, fun, and original products, including novelty gifts, ceramics, local art, candles, jewellery, accessories and cards. Rachel is currently refurbishing another shop at 1 Cornmarket, Faringdon, which she intends to open this Summer. The Trouble With Processed Foods Is the main reason why people all over the world are getting fat and sick due to eating poor quality or highly manufactured foodstuffs? Most foods we eat in the western world are processed in some way. Apples may be mechanically cut from trees, meats may have been ground in a machine and cream separated from the milk and churned to make butter. Some forty years ago we ate mostly fresh, local food and we knew where that food had come from. But ‘fast’ and heavily processed foods have crept into our diets, totally changing our palettes and the food business. We have all been encouraged by advertising and low prices to buy the new products that large companies want to sell to us whilst at the same time maximising their profits - usually by compromising quality and using technology to produce food which may taste like the real thing but which actually contains many manufactured ingredients. Even ‘real food’ can still go through a system of mechanical processing and still be labelled ‘real’ or ‘wholesome’. Putting something in a jar without adding any artificial ingredients can still be good for you. But a lot of foods now available to us (usually at cheap prices) have been chemically processed or made from refined ingredients and artificial substances. So why is that bad for us? Ÿ Processed foods are usually high in sugar (or even cheaper alternatives to sugar like high fructose corn syrup) Ÿ Processed foods can contain many artificial ingredients Ÿ Processed junk foods can be addictive Ÿ Processed foods are usually high in refined carbohydrates Ÿ Most processed foods are low in nutrients Ÿ Processed foods tend to be low in fibre Ÿ Processed foods are usually digested quickly leaving us unsatisfied and so we eat more Ÿ Processed foods usually require less energy to breakdown leading to weight gain Ÿ Processed foods are often high in trans fats and homogenised vegetable oils Ÿ Processed foods usually contain low quality ingredients. A lot of the nutrients in these ingredients do not survive processing and are destroyed, to compensate, artificial vitamins and minerals are added (some by law) to bring the food to a level so that it can pass food standards. Did you know that flavourings both ‘natural’ and otherwise are added not only to enhance the taste of the product but to hide the tastes and smells created by the manufacturing process? By reading the ingredients lists on the foods you buy and understanding what you are eating, by doing research and cooking fresh food from scratch, you can become empowered to make the right food choices. Ingredients shouldn't be a long list of unpronounceable things you've never heard of. By avoiding or reducing the processed food you eat, you will benefit in the way you look and feel. Quality not quantity is most important when choosing foods to create a healthy body and mind.

Local Fun Runs in the Sun The sun shone on the very first Faringdon Fun Run which was a great success and it will hopefully become a fixture on the sporting calendar in the future. Congratulations to Joel Francis on putting on a great event which included competitors of all ages. The next local race will be the Buscot 5k and 10k to held on

MOT

MOTOR SERVICES

Sunday 5th July. These events are organised by the Faringdon Rotary Club in the beautiful grounds of Buscot Park. It is only by kind permission from Lord Faringdon that it is possible to use this land, so it is a really special treat. The 5k starts at 9:30am and the 10k sets off an hour later. It is conceivably possible to do both if you are really keen! Both races follow a course around the gardens of Buscot Park and then out into the surrounding countryside. They are both traffic free and would suit all ages and abilities. If you want to enter then the cost is ÂŁ7 for the 5k and ÂŁ12 for the 10k. Under 16s are just a fiver. You can register with PayPal on the Rotary website www.faringdonrotaryclub.co.uk or ring Roddy Benson for further details on 01367 243864. If you want to get into training for this or any other event, come and see the Far Runners. We meet at the Old Town Hall at 6:30pm on a Tuesday and 7pm on a Thursday. We also meet at the Leisure Centre at 9:30am on Sundays. We cater for all abilities from absolute beginners to people training for a marathon.

One of the skills of running is having the wisdom to know when to run through pain and when to rest. A repetitive pain can occasionally work its way out in the course of a run or sometimes wind its way to an injury if you push yourself too hard. It is reported that more than 60 percent of runners get injured every year (search condensed science injured). This is not surprising because doing any repetitive movements over time will cause stress to muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones. Some common injuries include, runners knee, achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, iliotibial band syndrome, sprained ankles and shin splints.

BATHROOM SHOWROOM Open to the Public & Trade

Resting, icing, steroid injections and stretching can give short-term relief, as can orthotics, and special shoes however they just act as a temporary remedy and don’t get to the root of the problem. Acupuncture for a sports injury from a physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor can be incredibly helpful alongside other deep tissue work. That said, this kind of acupuncture just treats the branch of the problem. There is another acupuncture, a traditional acupuncture and healthcare system that treats the root and cause. I practice traditional acupuncture and I specialise in treating pain. I have studied a specialist system of acupuncture that alleviates pain immediately.

01367 241702 Market Place SN7 7HP Faringdon

"For about a year now, Faringdon's Town Team has been running regular Saturday Markets in the town centre. Bethia Thomas, Faringdon Town Team Coordinator has heard people explain how they want a more vibrant town centre, particularly on the weekends, and wants to put on more events and markets for everyone in Faringdon. "Faringdon is an historic market town, and we want to use the marketplace properly every weekend; the problem is if we can't get customers into support our stall holders they just won't come and our dream of a weekly market will never be realised." The markets to date have had a wide variety of stall holders, fresh and organic fruit vegetables from Westmill Organics, other types of produce, cakes and chutneys, as well as clothes, gifts, and crafts. "We want to grow our initial successes, and make Faringdon a vibrant market town once again - we just need to get the word out there that these events are happening, and to see more and more people supporting our stall holders!". The next Faringdon Saturday Market is on the 20th of June, with an Independents' Day Market scheduled for July 4th, and another on the 18th of July. Most markets run from 10.00am-1.00pm. For further details of the the markets follow 'Faringdon Markets' on Facebook."
