WHO’S NEXT?

Business Update “Your Faringdon”, the new branding launched by the Town Team at last month’s Saturday market has been well received. They will be building on this brand over the coming months with an aim to boost visitors to the town centre. Ideas and comments that will support this initiative are welcomed by the Chamber of Commerce and the Town Team. Please let us know what you think. Last month’s article went to press before the Fairford and Lechlade Business Awards, so this is the first opportunity we have to congratulate Brian Critchley and his company GEO-4D for winning the award for the Most Innovative Business of the Year. Congratulations also go to Perry Bishop for being one of the finalists in the most contested category, the Business of the Year. Last month, the Chamber of Commerce facilitated a presentation to inform local retailers and businesses on the projects they are currently working on. The Town Team also gave an insight into what plans there are for the “Your Faringdon” brand. Finally, Beth Davis from the Faringdon TIC informed the audience of their plans and how they can promote our local businesses. Initial plans for the Queens 90th Birthday celebrations were announced,

the first of which is on Thursday 21st April, with Faringdon participating in the nationwide Beacon lighting. This might be an ideal opportunity for another late night opening in the town. The program of events for the celebration in June will be announced in the coming months. The Chamber of Commerce’s AGM will be at 7pm on Tuesday 8th March at the Sudbury House Hotel. The subject will be “Faringdon – Destination or Dormitory?” and we will have retail expert, Keith Slater, presenting as well as award winning local business, GEO-4D and further speakers to be confirmed.

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Our February meeting was held in The Bell Hotel with another strong turnout. Having passed through the HMRC deadline of 31 January it was good to see those involved with processing tax returns, more relaxed. We quickly settled into the new venue and after a lively networking session settled down for breakfast and the ’60 second’ round. The scope of services and products available from our members is exceptional. There are too many to mention individually but if you are looking for advice on, financial, legal, property, computing, social media, personal development, HR, investment, fitness or office support then there will be someone there able to help you. Our speaker this month was Alex Meredith who provided us with a fascinating insight into the ‘Legal Landscape for Small Businesses’. He provided us with a taste of how legal services, to small and medium businesses, are likely to change with the relationship being more one of a trusted source of advice that would be available on a menu of products, rather than the more formal relationship, that currently exists and will continue to do so for larger companies and organisations. Alex likened it to going into a cocktail bar and ordering different shots from the menu according to the need. Our next meeting will be held on 7 March 2016 and will be held at The Crown Hotel in the centre of Faringdon starting at 07.30am. Our speaker will be Sue Jillet who will be giving us an insight into the issues, impact and responsibilities around bereavement and business.

0 0 0 1 Often whisky lovers comment when coming into our shop that they feel like a child in a sweet shop and I was strongly reminded of this recently with the release of the latest in the Glenmorangie Private Edition range. Called Milsean (which is Gaelic for ‘sweet things’ and is pronounced ‘Meel-shawn’), it was inspired by a desire to re-create the flavours and aromas of an old fashioned sweet shop, and it is even presented in a distinctive candy striped box! The official tasting notes given for it certainly transport you back to those confectioners shops of old with their tempting jars of sweeties: Aroma: Perfumed, sweet and spicy with hints of sugar cane, ripe fruits, sherbet lemons and fudge Taste: A sweet, luscious candy-like flavour followed by a mix of tart plummy fruit, candied orange peel, cherries, and angelica. Finish: Long and spicy, but always with a sweetness in the background, with flavours of ginger, brown sugar, sweet tobacco and cake mix. This is a whisky that has been many years in the making and originated in the fertile brain of Glenmorangie’s Head of Distilling and Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden. The stills at Glenmorangie are the tallest in Scotland (with the still room often being likened to a cathedral in appearance – it is magnificent!) and because the alcohol vapours have to fight so hard to reach the top of these stills only the lightest succeed, resulting in a smooth, elegant spirit. Once this mellow whisky has had an initial maturation period Dr Lumsden uses his extensive knowledge of wood and intuitive flair for cask selection to produce different expressions that have spent an extra period of time in casks chosen to enhance the original profile. For the Milsean expression he wanted to elevate the sweeter elements of the Glenmorangie and his casks of choice for the extra maturation period were Portugese red wine casks, that were given a unique twist by being re-toasted after their arrival in Scotland. Unusually, a residue of the wine was left in the casks while they were re-charred and this turned out to be a touch of genius as it resulted in a caramelised effect and a deepening of the sugars in the wood. Not surprisingly, the whisky aroused a lot of interest even before it was released and our initial concerns that it might be too sweet for most people’s palates were soon allayed when we tasted it. Careful monitoring of the casks by Dr Bill ensured that the whisky had been bottled at just the right stage, producing a whisky that is extremely well balanced, with a delightfully enticing nose and a taste that is sweet and spicy but with no cloying notes. So if you want to give a whisky lover an extra special Easter egg this year how about this treat from the sweetie shop?

Tel: 0345 209 4497 Mobile: 07811 208 323 Anna.Gage@hrdept.co.uk www.hrdept.co.uk Last autumn, Anna Gage set up the HR Dept based near Faringdon, providing outsourced human resources advice and practical support for small and medium sized businesses across the area. Anna is delighted with the company’s progress so far. “It has been a very busy time since I set up The HR Dept and I have been out and about networking like crazy,” she said. “The results are beginning to show and I have signed up six retained clients already. They all require HR assistance at affordable rates and have been a great pleasure to work with.” A few years ago Mrs Gage was a full-time mother of two teenagers. Now she is running her own business, having qualified with a Masters Degree in HR from Oxford Brookes University and a Level 7 qualification with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Her dissertation concerned the evaluation of barriers to employment for people with mental health conditions and she has substantial experience working with a variety of charities, such as the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust and Skiing With Heroes. For the last three years of studying for her MA Anna worked as an HR adviser for a public sector charitable organisation, managing the employee life cycle of 200 staff from Oxfordshire to Cornwall. Now she is looking forward to helping Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) throughout Oxfordshire to tackle the growing HR challenges facing company owners. “Small businesses today are caught up in a lot of things that they need to take note of, whether it’s auto-enrolment, the travel to work regulations, or shared parental leave,” she said. “EU regulations are having a big impact on large and small businesses. It can be a real challenge and the cost of making a mistake, or not complying with employment law and HR processes, can have a hugely damaging impact on growth plans. Anna, lives in the village of Little Coxwell with her husband Jonathan, who has his own financial consultancy Keystone Family Advisers, and their two children. She said she was relishing the challenge of setting up in business: “I decided a few years ago that I would like to reestablish my career, so I went back to university and studied again. “I’ve always wanted to run my own business but I’ve never been in a position to do so. Now my life dynamics have changed and the opportunity arose. It feels like the right thing to be doing. It’s exciting because it brings together a whole spectrum of interests and skills, and providing a local and personal service is something I think will really appeal to new clients. “It’s about looking at a business and helping to meet their needs as well as the needs of the individual, devising an HR strategy which aligns with the vision of the company. Give me a call, let me help you with all your HR needs. Anna.

Spring Onions!

Rob.. The Cheese Man!

Best Cornish Pasty’s. Really Tasty Gammon Ham.

It's a real shame that now many ingredients are no longer seasonal. We can buy tomatoes all year round, cucumbers and broccoli, apples and oranges. And it seems that we are also now so used to just buying everything when we like, it's easy to forget our unique seasons. It's really rather sad. Think about the moment when you suddenly realise rhubarb is in season, or the wonderful asparagus or even Jerusalem artichokes. It's rather monumental. Or perhaps you may even look forward to those times, have them logged in your calendar. I have a customer who has just turned a hundred and he adores his rhubarb. I cut it up for him into little inch long pieces ready to take home to cook. He poaches it with nothing but a touch of water. No sugar required. A true taste of the season, I think. A seasonal vegetable I love, seems to have lost its name. Look for a bunch of spring onions and what you will find are salad onions. No more can these little punchy onions be called Spring onions because they are bought all year round. So apparently a ruling says it is a salad onion or nothing. Well, I have made a pact with myself that I need to get in some of these little green chaps and label them Spring onions! I'm going to be a rebel. Chop them into salads or even great piles of buttery mash. Shred them to adorn a Chinese crispy duck pancake or grill them whole, then spoon over creme fraiche, sprinkle on breadcrumbs and grill until crunchy and bubbling. I really like to make them into a simple tart, just right for eating at lunchtime. And it utilises a bit of cheating, now let's face it, who has time to make puff pastry? Unroll a ready rolled sheet of puff pastry and lay on to a baking sheet. Spread with a thick layer of cream cheese, leaving a border of around an inch. Season well with salt and pepper. Trim some Spring onions and lay them over the cream cheese then bake for 20 minutes at around 200°C. Sprinkle with finely grated Parmesan then Bake for another 5 minutes. Serve with a green salad of lambs lettuce dressed with a lovely grainy mustard vinaigrette. Oh. And don't forget a glass of local Cider. Cheers! | The Advertiser | page 11 | Good day and welcome to my latest ramblings around the veterinary world and the countryside around us. After a spell of really stormy weather, most hedges, trees and bird tables seem to have returned to their normal upright positions. Our table however is new and the roof lower than the one felled to the ground in the gales, it’s taking the smaller birds a little while to adapt to their now sheltered drier sunflower seeds. Remember to use gloves when you regularly clean and disinfect the inner platform. Last weekend, blue tits, great tits, sparrows and even woodpeckers clung like limpets to the heavy peanut feeders, as they swung wildly to and fro and “every which way” in that wild weather and horizontal rain. A heavy covering of snow on the mountaintops made a dazzling backdrop in the brief sunny spells. Sheep are still grazing right up to the snow line – such hardy breeds! As I write, the sun shines brightly – in the calendar full of discussions on human mental health, something not too apparent in the veterinary side but we are aware more and more that clients are asking for help with behavioural issues. There are many ways to help, with the services of trained counsellors and with products that derive from natural sources, such as pheromones and certain proteins found in milk. In the past few weeks, we have organised and carried out our first stem cell/harvested platelet V-PET treatment of a young dog who has had a very serious stifle joint (knee) ligament injury. With much research and training-up on our part beforehand, the dog started laser treatments, before the joint received the special injection, and afterwards hydrotherapy has now restarted cautiously, all seems to be going well as I write. This treatment will change our Practice approach to managing cruciate ligament injuries, maybe not all will respond as well but any standard surgical repair will not be hampered by this initial intra-articular joint treatment. An anaesthetic will normally be needed, the Practice has reviewed and upgraded our pre-anaesthetic blood test service. I cannot stress enough that this is very important to every pet facing an anaesthetic, a completely silent, underlying risk can be managed before any anaesthetic is administered, this could delay or cancel the operation completely, such as with juvenile kidney failure. On a happier note, it means that we can manage the choice of sedation, intravenous fluid and the anaesthetics, plus the pain relief needed. In any aged dog, particularly the younger ones, we will have a great baseline to compare future results. I’ve already talked about the new, specific kidney function SDMA test, which will soon become part of every in-house profile that we treat. A strange reflection on human domestic life! Beside grape, lily pollen and chocolate poisoning, I have now found myself doing online research (CPD) on marijuana, xylitol sweeteners and laundry/dishwasher soap pods poisoning. It is also a worse reflection on human life, that we see animal abuse from domestic violence and are retraining ourselves to cover that. Newly graduated vets will have already been made aware of this, in their lectures at their universities before qualifying to practice. Finally, a little word of caution to those of you quite rightly enjoying the company of a pet rat or two. Scientists have identified a virus, the Hantavirus (Seoul Virus) that has caused a small number of human cases of acute kidney injury, in people who work with or simply keep rats. All of the UK public health authorities are investigating these cases, in collaboration with the Animal and Plant Health Agency. Transmission is via inhalation of aerosolised virus from rat urine and faeces or from contaminated bedding. The rats aren’t clinically ill at all and may even shed the virus on and off during their whole life. Veterinary staff and pet owners/breeders who regularly handle rats should be aware of the risks and should inform medical staff about their contact with rats whenever seeking medical attention, particularly if the kidneys are involved. Thank you for following my rambles from nose to long tail; I hope that it has been interesting and useful. Do get in touch, should anything interest or worry you. Veterinary medicine is constantly evolving and I’m privileged to be part of such a great profession. Have a great month and a very happy Easter – your garden birds too!!

Wine Tasting Mechanics… Understanding the mechanics of wine tasting can enhance the whole wine tasting experience. Often the questions are asked as to what is being analysed when holding a glass of wine to the light or why wine is swirled inside the glass. Here’s the starting point….. Appearance When tasting wine, you should first look at the wine against a white background to check its colour, its intensity and tone, all of which can be clues to the grape, country of origin and age of the wine. If you tilt the glass slightly, you can observe the core or centre of the wine and its rim, which is the outer edge of the wine. This helps identify the age; Whites: can vary in colour, from a very pale green to a rich, golden hue, with the paler ones usually tangy on the palate, coming from a cool climate, while the darker ones tending to have a fuller, riper flavour and be from a warm climate. Young whites often have a green or lime rim and as whites age, they tend to turn darker and more golden. Reds: can range from pink to dark purple, with the pinky ones usually tasting vibrant and fresh, while the darker ones will usually be fuller-bodied and spicier. Young reds will have a purple or lilac rim and as reds mature, they tend to lighten and the rim turns from a red to a rust or orangey brown. Bouquet or Nose After gently swirling the wine in your glass (which increases the surface area, releasing delightful aroma molecules), take a good long sniff. What do you smell? It could be a simple fruit aroma, such as plums, or something more complex such as toastiness or vanilla. Palate After taking a good mouthful of the wine, breathe air in over it, so the flavours can be released. Then, as you swallow, try to also breathe out through your nose, as it is the nose/mouth combination that will give you the full flavour. As well as flavours such as lemons, gooseberries and blackcurrants you may also notice acidity and tannin, a bitter drying taste which is common in young reds. After you have swallowed (or spat, if you are just tasting!), enjoy the aftertaste. Good wines usually linger in your mouth sensuously – this is described as having good length and is a characteristic of good quality. What to do if you have pain that is stopping you from going to your favourite exercise class, or making you struggle at work. We’re famously a nation that doesn’t like to make a fuss. But new statistics from the British Acupuncture Council reveal that when it comes to pain, 44% of British people really do just grin and bear it which impacts long term health. In my clinic I help many clients with musculoskeletal pain, sport injuries or arthritis. The BAcC survey shows that we put up with pain when we don’t need to (Search: British Acupuncture Council). Often discomfort from musculoskeletal problems can be alleviated with the correct diagnosis and treatment. Traditional acupuncture is an evidence based therapy that repeatedly indicates it reduces pain and swelling, increases blood flow to promote recovery and helps restore movement at the site of injury. I will be offering free pain relief consultations at Faringdon Leisure Centre on Wednesday 9th March from 7-9pm and again on Friday 11th March from 10.30-12.30pm. The consultations will be free where donations can be made to the Leisure Centre’s Sport Relief campaign. At the next Women’s Health Group we are really excited to be working with Dot, a personal trainer from Faringdon Leisure Centre. At the group she will show you how to avoid sport injuries. There will be tea, cake and shining conversation, but no spandex. The group starts at 7.30pm on Wednesday 2nd March at The Rookery on Marlborough Street. How to avoid sport injury: 1. When exercising make sure you warm up and cool down. Make sure your warm up and cool down exercises are done with the same mental and physical focus as the main exercise itself. 2. Sit up straight. Posture is something all people should be aware of throughout their lives in all activities they do, both work and leisure. If you feel pain when doing an activity of any type or even when resting ask yourself why. 3. Moderate your exercise with appropriate rest. The body needs time to recuperate after activity, especially when recovering from any type of injury. What to do if you already have musculoskeletal pain: Give me a call or email and book in for a free consultation. Rachel – 07917 411552

Healthy Tips!

Is Stretching Good For You? Can regular stretching be as important as regular exercise? A lot of people neglect this aspect of their fitness regime, even though stretching has major benefits. I often hear people say they don’t bother with stretching after exercise “because it’s boring”. Hopefully I can inspire you to make it part of your fitness regime by explaining why it might be good for you! What do we mean by stretching? Stretching can be seen as a natural and instinctive activity performed by humans and many animals and often occurs after waking from sleep or after long periods of inactivity. Stretching is also a form of physical exercise in which a specific muscle is stretched in order to improve the muscle’s elasticity and achieve comfortable muscle tone. The result is a feeling of increased muscle control, flexibility and range of motion. Increasing flexibility through stretching is one of the basic fundamentals of physical fitness. It is commonly done to reduce the risk of injury and increase performance. There are many techniques for stretching and many views as to when it should be done. There is some debate as to whether stretching before exercise is beneficial. Personally I think more harm can be done when trying to stretch a cold, tight muscle before warming up. By doing your basic stretch routine after exercise you can help improve flexibility by increasing your range of motion. You can assist in correcting posture by lengthening tight muscles that pull areas of the body away from their intended position, or that pull areas of your body closer together restricting proper movement. Stretching decreases injury and increases blood and nutrient supply to muscles, reducing the effect of DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). If done properly, stretching can prevent injury and relax the muscles. To benefit from stretching: Stretch after your workout when your muscles are already warm. After spending time in the gym contracting your muscles to perform certain routines it is good to lengthen them again with your stretch regime. Focus on a key area of the body. If you are aware of muscles that are tight, then concentrate on those areas. How long should I hold a stretch? I am sure there are lots of views on this! Holding a stretch for 30 seconds and repeating 3 times will probably give you the best results for your time and efforts. Static stretching (no movement) is done after exercise – ballistic stretching (a rapid bouncing stretch) is best avoided unless you know what you are doing and why you are doing it! Dynamic stretching can be done as a walking or movement stretch during a warm up programme. By performing slow controlled movements through full range of motion, a person reduces risk of injury once warmed up. Why do we do it? · Flexibility and correction of posture · Mobility - tight muscles can limit movement Key muscles to stretch: · Quadriceps (front of thigh) · Hamstrings (back of thigh) · Gluteals (Bum!) · Pectorals (front of chest) · Hip flexors (deep hip muscles) Stretch your way to better flexibility and better health. Good luck!

| The Advertiser | page 20 | “GO Active, Get Healthy” is a local campaign that aims to help Oxfordshire residents to do more exercise, getting more activity into their everyday lives. By connecting people with a range of activities and opportunities the campaign supports them to become more physically active and healthy. The co-ordinator for our area is Ashley Chapman and his role is to deliver the aims of the campaign as well as providing motivational support to help get people started and keep them on track! One of the success stories over the past three years has been the inception of our very own local recreational jogging group, right here in Faringdon, the “Far Runners”. The group is free to join with no commitment and welcomes all abilities. The group has been extremely successful in delivering exactly what the “GO Active, Get Healthy” campaign sets out to do. If you want to find out more, then you can join them on one of their weekly runs around Faringdon:Faringdon Market Place – Tuesday’s 6.30pm and Thursday’s 7.00pm Faringdon Leisure Centre – Sunday’s 9.30am In addition to these “regular” meetings, there are courses tailored for beginners throughout the year. To register please contact the group through Far Runners on facebook or email them at farrunners@yahoo.com If running isn’t your bag, then why not have a go at “Slacklining”. This activity is ideal for the whole family and involves balancing on a tensioned line. This group meets at Folly Hill, Faringdon every Sunday between noon and 3pm. You can drop in at anytime, but it is weather dependent. Please check the ‘Effootless Slacklining’ facebook page or contact Brian at effootlessslacklining@gmail.com Finally, we are pleased to announce that there will be a 5km charity running event through the woods at Badbury Clumps at 9:30am on Bank Holiday Monday 28th March. It costs £5 to enter and all finishers will receive a medal and exercise shirt. To register please contact Ashley Chapman on 07717714477 or at ashley.chapman@southandvale.gov.uk If you would like to be the first to receive details on the latest activities for the district, please subscribe to GO Active’s free newsletter on their website www.getoxfordshireactive.org or “like” them on facebook ‘Go Active Vale’ or follow them on Twitter ‘@GOActiveVale’
