WHO’S NEXT?
Business Update This month sees the opening of Aldi and the “official” opening of the new Faringdon Park development. We are sure that we will soon see what effect this scheme has on the town centre and, as has been suggested in this column before, we think it will be a positive one. This month we would like to promote the Faringdon Business Plan workshop that will be held on 23rd March. This event will provide an opportunity for people with a business interest in the town to put forward thoughts and ideas with the Economic Development team from the Vale of White Horse, the Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce, amongst others, so a business plan can be developed for Faringdon’s future. Please come along and have a say.
Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Apprenticeship awareness week is running this month and a new government initiative rolls out in April. Although it will not apply to many businesses in Faringdon initially, it is set to be far more inclusive by 2020. If anyone is looking to take on apprentices then information is available through the Chamber of Commerce or from the government website. Another free event coming up, for those who rely on digital marketing, is being hosted by Vale4Business in conjunction with Zanzi Digital on 30th March between 8:30am and 10:30am at the Milton Innovation Centre. The Saturday market this month is celebrating Faringdon’s proud Fairtrade status, so please come along and see what is happening on the morning of Saturday 18th March. If you require any further details about any of the above, please contact president@faringdonchamberofcommerce.co.uk

The Chamber of Commerce AGM is being held on 14th March at 7pm in the Sudbury House Hotel. They have invited the managers and/or representatives from each of the new Faringdon Park retailers to each give a short presentation and will invite questions as to what they can do to help Faringdon thrive. Also attending will be the developer who put together the scheme and he will tell us about how the development process unfolded. Finally, the new business coordinator for Faringdon Town Council will introduce herself and set the scene for the workshop mentioned above. This event is open to all.

0 0 0 1 I last wrote about whiskeys for St Patrick’s Day in 2013 and at that time whiskey production in Ireland was in the hands of just a few companies. Since then, however, there has been a surge of interest in both the drinking and production of Irish whiskey which is bringing new life to the industry so, with March 17th approaching, I thought now was a good time to look at what’s happening in the Irish whiskey world. Traditionally known for pot still whiskey (triple distilled and a mix of malted and unmalted barley) Irish distillers also produce single malts and blends and various permutations of all three types are increasingly being used, with Tullamore being a good example of this. Re-opened in 2014 as a new distillery on the site of the old one, the Tullamore whiskey currently being released has been distilled at Midleton Distillery but once their own is sufficiently matured they will switch to this and they have already shown the breadth of expressions they intend to have. The light, toastyness of the Tullamore D.E.W. original and the creamy, chocolate, fruit and nut of the 12 year old Special Reserve show how varying the proportions of the triple distilled grain, pot still and malt whiskey can influence these uniquely Irish blends, whilst their triple distilled single malts are spicy, fruity and complex delights. Renaissance and experimentation are exemplified in the new Teeling distillery in Dublin, where Jack and Stephen Teeling want to bring ‘choice and breadth’ back to Irish whiskey in innovative ways whilst maintaining respect for the old traditions. Whiskeys currently being released are from stock owned under a supply agreement with Cooleys and are double distilled but the whiskey being produced at their new distillery includes pot still whiskey so this will contribute to the variety of whiskeys they can release. Current expressions include a delicious small batch blend that has a high proportion of malt and is finished in rum casks. There is also a single malt which aims to retain typical Irish smoothness whilst introducing as much flavour as possible, and this has been done by vatting together whiskeys finished in five different wine cask types. Pot still whiskeys with their rich and creamy taste and mouth feel are still, unsurprisingly, very popular. Although broadly similar each expression is influenced by the type of casks used for maturation. For example, Yellow Spot uses a combination of bourbon, sherry and Malaga casks to produce flavours that include honey, spice, coffee, chocolate and red apples while Green Spot is matured in new and refill bourbon casks that result in clove, green apples and toasted oak flavours, and the fabulous full bodied, fruit cakey Redbreast bears the clear influence of Oloroso sherry casks. Whichever Irish whiskey you choose you’ll find they are usually smooth yet complex and unique personalities who you’ll enjoy spending time with.

Spring into Wine Spring is in the air marked by the arrival of snowdrops in the garden. Following ‘dry’ January and a rather cold February, we welcome the warmth of the sun, milder days and sipping a glass of wine reflecting the season. For many of us, the changing seasons come with changing preferences in wine. The crisp whites we crave in summer give way to heartier reds in autumn and winter months. Spring provides an abundance of natural perfumes provided by blossom and flowers in bloom. This can be mirrored in wine – Riesling, Viognier or Pinot Noir, which offer an abundance of aromatics. As to be expected, personal preference trumps everything else, but here are some general guidelines for serving wine with the seasons. Spring Lighter, aromatic wines help welcome warmer weather. They pair well with the lighter dishes that begin to grace the dinner table… Spring wines: Ÿ Chenin Blanc Ÿ Pinot Grigio Ÿ Riesling Ÿ Unoaked Chardonnay Ÿ Moscato Ÿ Pinot Noir Ÿ Rosé Summer Crisp white wines are great for quenching your thirst in the summer, but slightly chilled, easy-drinking reds are perfectly suitable, too. Suggested summer wines: Ÿ Sauvignon Blanc Ÿ Pinot Grigio Ÿ Riesling Ÿ Chardonnay Ÿ Rosé Ÿ Pinot Noir Ÿ Merlot Autumn Full-bodied whites and light- to medium-bodied reds are the perfect complement to cooler weather and autumn harvest foods. A few Autumnal wines: Ÿ Viognier Ÿ Oaked Chardonnay Ÿ Pinot Noir Ÿ Cabernet Franc Ÿ Merlot Ÿ Sparkling Wine Winter Full-bodied reds are king in winter since they pair well with heartier dishes, but sparkling wines have a starring role during the Festive Season. Great Winter wines: Ÿ Malbec Ÿ Syrah Ÿ Zinfandel Ÿ Cabernet Sauvignon Ÿ Bordeaux Blend Ÿ Oaked Chardonnay

March Ramblings!
| The Advertiser | page 9 |
Spring has arrived ! Cyclamen, aconite and snowdrops, with daffodil spears showing the tightly wrapped flowers inside. Crazy weather too – a very green Winter in Wales, young sheep still out in the hills with the breeding ewes under cover for the lambing. That’s when March winds will roar and the heavy snow falls and drifts, most farmers tell me. A new growing season can now begin, with plants from greenhouses and kitchen window sills ready to be planted out. Tomatoes and strawberries may stay in their greenhouses but others can join the purple-sprouting broccoli and good old Brussel sprout plants that may still be active until April. I‘m always amazed by the vegetables and fruit that dogs will happily eat (No grapes and any vine products at all please!). I wonder what dogs would think of the relative, possibly hyped-up shortage of broccoli along with salad vegetables? Vegetables or fruit with a high anthocyanin content (purple) are excellent sources of anti-oxidants for us all, dogs included! I’m slowly getting used to purple sweet potatoes!! Many dogs cope with oranges and bananas too. Other than the classic yellow large banana, commercial bananas can also be red in colour. Bananas are quite fascinating, as a berry they float like apples and watermelons, are cultivated sterile species, propagated rhizome. There are two wild sources – one more the cooking variety, like the green plantains (banana family), with the other giving us the dessert banana. A few varieties of wild bananas include, pink bananas with furry skins, green and white striped ones with the contents the colour of orange sherbet and bananas that taste like strawberries when cooked. Red bananas are a variety with reddish-purple skin. They are smaller and plumper than the common Cavendish banana. When ripe, raw red bananas have a flesh that is cream
to light pink in colour. They are also softer and sweeter than the yellow Cavendish varieties, with a slight mango flavour. Many red bananas are imported from producers in East Africa, Asia, South America and the United Arab Emirates. I’m looking forward to finding and trying those, but happily ate many kilos of plantain during my early-veterinary years in West Africa. Bananas belong to the same family of plants as lilies, orchids and palms, so the 7-8 meter plants with their 3m long by almost 1m wide leaves are just made for thatching villagers’ huts! Bananas are low in calories, have no fat, no sodium and no cholesterol. They contain Vit. C, Vit. B6 and fibre, Phosphorus and Potassium. Research suggests that evidence exists for lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes, as well as decreasing the risk of colonic cancer. They also contain the only fruit combination of Vitamin B6 and the amino acid Tryptophan, which is the precursor of the amazing hormone, Serotonin. Nature and the hand of man never stands still. The cluster or “hand” of a banana has between 10 and 20 “fingers”. One could do a lot with that number on your hand – there’s no mention of them being all “thumbs”. So, here are the last penned pieces to welcome Spring and I look forward to sharing April with you all, as this tells us that: "Loveliest of trees, the cherry now, is hung with bloom along the bough." - A. E. Houseman, Shropshire Lad. More on our canine rehab plans next month but in the meantime keep well and thank you for joining me this Month. As the seasons turn and we move into Spring, we’re heading into what is traditionally the busiest time of year for estate agents. For those looking to move in the summer and take advantage of the long school holidays, this is the perfect time to get your property on the market. So grab your aprons, rubber gloves and wellington boots and let’s get going! Ÿ Spruce up the Front. Keeping drives and paths clear of leaves and weeds helps with first impressions and gets people to the front door safely. If you have outside lighting then make sure it’s working. Ÿ Guttering. If someone is viewing on a rainy day, we don’t want the sound of that over flowing gutter putting them off. Ÿ De-clutter. Less is more when it comes to presenting your home to potential buyers, so this is the perfect opportunity to tackle that rogue kitchen cupboard or clear the cupboard under the stairs. Ÿ Draft Exclude. Certainly if you have an older property, make sure you’re free of drafty windows and doors that can both create a rattle and let in the cold. Ÿ Think Lighting. The mood and feel of any property can be enhanced with the subtle use of lighting. Warm lighting on a cold day can transform a room. A good tip is to consider a table lamp in the kitchen instead of the typical harsher ceiling lights. Ÿ Seasonal Curtains. This may sound extreme but consider having different curtains throughout the year. Darker and heavier enhance the warmth of a property in winter and the ripple and movement of lighter ones in summer purvey coolness and comfort. Ÿ Mats & Carpets. Have both an outdoor mat to wipe feet on and then a mat inside should viewers want to take of their shoes and consider that you may need to accommodate coats, hats and scarf's. Ÿ Pets. We know they’re part of the family but we also know they’re prone to have their own unique aroma. Not everybody is a pet lover so, best give those floor coverings an extra clean. Ÿ Children. Can’t think why we went from pets to children! Actually, it’s more about all the stuff they seem to have so make sure it’s tidied away and off the floor. Hopefully we’ve given you a few cost effective ways of getting your home “match-ready”. Naturally we wouldn’t want you to spend too long on the market as there is only so much continuous tidying a person can take!

" Please note that the techniques I use are for everyone and especially useful for chronic and age related degeneration. Please be realistic in your expectations, if you present to me with numerous ailments and areas of pain, I am limited to how much I can do in an hour, therefore, sometimes you will need a few sessions to get on top of an existing problem, or at the very least may benefit from a two hour session. Initially some people may feel like they have had a gym workout as rebalanced muscles take time to adapt to their correctly restored position and start functioning properly. Do not be put off by this as only by rebalancing your body, can it start to function better and settle down. I try to treat the underlying cause as opposed to the symptom."

HOT Milk By Deborah Levy
I’ve always felt a little bit sorry for February, wedged as it is between the rude awakening of January and the onset of spring. Dismal, usually, with warm sunny spells as rare as hen’s teeth.
WE WANT YOUR CAR! CASH 4 CAR’S
01367 244895 www.nbmoorecars.co.uk Unit 3 RAC Park Rd Faringdon SN7 8LA
With sleet showers lashing against the windows, I sought refuge in Hot Milk. I was happy to resume my exploration of the Booker Prize shortlist after finding varying degrees of satisfaction with Eileen (loved this) and His Bloody Project (this not so much). Hot Milk is Deborah Levy’s second Booker Prize-shortlisted novel, after 2011’s Swimming Home. The sun-kissed cover of the former hints at the warm delights within. Sofia arrives in Almeria, on the Spanish coast seeking a medical solution for a mysterious condition, which plagues her mother Rose. Rose’s legs have stopped working and no one seems to be able to tell her why. Rose and Sofia are pinning their hopes on Doctor Gomez, whose marble clinic rises out of the hot desolation of its surroundings like an oasis. The dynamic between Sofia and her mother is one of grudging mutual dependence, which Levy delves into in unblinking detail, creating a delicate psychodrama between the lead characters. Levy is able to extract maximum impact from each situation, while making it shimmer with vitality. You can almost smell the sea, and feel the sand on your skin, and the lash of the jellyfish stings that Sofia endures masochistically, one imagines, to bring herself to life. Reading the book on a rainy weekend in February was like shooting an arrow straight into summer. It’s an easy read but do not mistake that for it being a light frivolous read. The themes are deep and complex. Sofia’s Greek heritage ties in with the Greek tragedy feel of the story, which swoops and darts between hope and desperation. Levy is a skilful wordsmith, and draws the reader in from the start. The heat of the book is exhilarating and exhausting, compelling and quite unlike anything I’ve read in the past six months. Highly recommended if you like beautiful storytelling with a sting in the tail. Step into the water…but watch out for the jellyfish.

Westland Autos www.westland-autos.co.uk Claire Marie: 07774 510599 It appears that the parties we offer are becoming as popular as the clothes themselves here at VGS Following the completion of our Gothic themed back room we have now successfully held a Victorian Seance birthday party and a children's Steampunk Hat Workshop for a 9 year old girls birthday. Both very entertaining and enjoyable for all, the feedback was so good that other bookings followed. For the Seance we went back to basics and started with a welcoming Victorian buffet and soft drinks, however being a birthday party they decided to bring they're own fizz complete with glasses, which we gladly poured. The food was a take on a cold Victorian buffet complete with Gala Pie and Cheeses, all served on our vintage selection of oval dishes and plates, the bread was made by Lillian our local baker and presented the Victorian way. After a few nibbles and a glass of bubbly the party proceeded to the back room where all was dark and the music was spooky! You'll have to book your own Seance to see what happened next! When all was done they retreated back to the shop side of things and finished of the buffet and wine whilst trying out some of our full range of vintage and gothic clothing, doing thier own catwalk before purchasing a few items and heading of to the local pub to finish the birthday celebrations. The children's Steampunk was fun, a little messy at times and very creative, bringing out the hidden artist in many of the girls. They went straight in, glue guns at the ready, cutting up jewellery and chains and using all the other items we provided to design the most outrageous and colourful Steampunk hats. Bows and feathers were the main feature of these hats along with all our selection of mono and double goggles, some in bright colours others in vintage bronze. During production the girls stopped for some sandwiches and cake before continuing to finish their masterpieces. Once finished they modelled the hats and with some of our garments of varying styles and sizes and did a march through the shop around and back to the workshop to finish the food and change back into normal clothes, albeit still wearing the Steampunk hats! Shift The Focus, Change The Story! I have spent the last 10 years helping people with their weight, fitness and flexibility through exercise, massage and nutrition. One of the things I try to do for my clients is to give them the information to enable them to take control of their own situation and make positive change. There are lots of available resources to help you achieve your goals but, even so, most of us struggle by focusing on the problems we have instead of where we want to be. For me, a weekly one to one yoga session helps me to refocus and think of ways to better help my clients. While struggling to settle into a pose I often feel tension in my hip. When my instructor takes control of my hip I don’t need to put so much mental effort into the pose so I can concentrate on my stretch - which improves. This struck a chord with me. I was focusing on the obstruction and not what I was wanting to achieve, putting all my mental effort into the wrong place. Sometimes it takes someone else to help you re-focus on what is more important. This also became apparent when preparing some notes for a talk I gave for horse rider fitness. I came across a sentence that said,” Your horse cannot produce a better movement than you allow”. Once again changing the focus can help, in this case from the horse (being the obstruction) to our own fitness and flexibility for riding. Getting your horse fit is probably your main priority - but what about you, the rider? Becoming a fitter rider with improved posture and flexibility can enhance your experience and lead to better results. It is as important to work on your own health and fitness as well as your horse’s fitness and wellbeing. After all you are working together as a team. We all face challenges on the way to achieving our goals and sometimes the main obstruction we face can be a lack of self-belief. We concentrate too much on what we can’t do rather than what we can do, on what we have to give up rather than what we have to gain. This can happen when we’re eating and exercising for weight loss too - we focus too much on the scales and not enough on how our body is changing shape, or how healthy we feel. It is much easier to give up on your goals if you only consider the negatives, and conversely it is much easier to achieve your goals if you only concentrate on the positives. Constantly putting our efforts into the barriers that prevent us from leading a more harmonious and relaxed life can be exhausting and demoralising, so why not reverse it? I get great strength from seeing the people I work with transform from being negative individuals that ‘can’t do’ to positive people that ‘can do’. What is even more rewarding is that they go on to help others achieve through their own positivity and renewed focus. Changing their story changes others too. Why not change your focus, look forward and make yourself the best you can be?

The recent wave of warm weather heralds the start of spring, and just like the bulbs starting to pop their green shoots above the grass, we eagerly await seeing what impact the new shops opening on the outskirts of town will have on our community. Growth inevitably affects our town, for some it brings jobs and opportunities, for others competition and sometimes not so welcome business challenges. Faringdon Business Group continues to support local business owners by providing a network of contacts and current trade news via our Members only closed Facebook Group. With membership varying from single owner traders, to larger company Directors, it’s the perfect platform for both established and new businesses to reach out to each other for advice, help and support.
HALF PRICE ON MANY ITEMS STARTING 9AM SATURDAY 11TH MARCH
We are very excited to announce this month, that the FBG Committee is planning a Black Tie Ball for this Summer. The event is scheduled to take place on 14th July and will combine the inaugural Faringdon Business Awards with a formal dinner and dance, with live music and disco. There will be sponsorship for the event, including the drinks reception, table arrangements, and desserts course, plus the opportunity for local businesses to sponsor award categories or provide raffle prizes. The event will be open to members of the FBG Group, and their guests. If you’re interested in sponsoring the Ball or Awards, please get in touch with the FBG Committee via our Facebook page.
