WHO’S NEXT?
Business Update
The “Remain” or “Leave” EU debate is gathering pace and Faringdon is holding its own debate on the subject on Friday 3rd June in the Corn Exchange at 7pm. Our local MP, Ed Vaizey, will be speaking in favour of continuing our membership of the EU and local accountant and mediator, Jonathan Russell, will be presenting the case for leaving the Union. Further speakers will be announced shortly and there will be an opportunity to ask questions. The very first Faringdon Business Expo will take place on Saturday 16th July in the Corn Exchange. Please contact Julie Farmer for information julie@mypavirtualservices.com if you wish to participate in this event. The town centre continues to go from strength to strength, thanks to the work the Town Team are doing and it comes as welcome news that Bethia Thomas will continue in this role for the next two years. The monthly markets have a number of regular stall holders now and are drawing more people in; the April market was well attended even though snow was falling!
Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk The Clive Davis Community Hero Award went to Lou Smith for her tireless work on the Pump House Project, which leads us very nicely to this month’s shout out, which is a fund raiser for them. If you would like a rare peek behind the scenes at Faringdon House and an evening with its owner, Sofka Zinovieff, the author of “The Mad Boy, Lord Berners, My Grandmother and Me”
Then there was the beacon lighting for the Her Majesty’s 90th birthday which filled the Market Place. A number of retailers stayed open late that evening and depending on feedback received, we will hopefully see an increase in the number of late night shopping dates in the Faringdon calendar. Last month, we also saw the Town Council’s “Community Awards”. It was very humbling to see so many people who give up their time, providing services to make Faringdon a better place for its residents. Well done to all those nominated and all the deserving recipients of the awards, which included the Faringdon Coffee Shop as Community Business, Faringdon Knit & Knatter as Community Group, and Noah Walker, at the tender age of 14 years, as Community Volunteer.
Saturday 7th May contact info@thepumphouseproject.co.uk for tickets, £50 each.
Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Our April meeting was held in The Bell Hotel with another strong turnout, despite the fact that the advertising and promotion was firmly in the ‘last-minute.com’ category. It was great to see some new members at the meeting and a very warm welcome to Christina Taylor, and Milly Carmichael, who were attending for the first time. The format of this meeting was slightly different. We did not have a speaker and therefore extended the 60-second pitch activity to two minutes and allowed time for everyone to ask questions after each ‘pitch’. In general this worked well and with some improved time management may well be used again. The opportunity to go into a little more depth and find out more about the benefits and challenges that members are offering and dealing with gave a different twist to the morning. There were some valuable hints provided by members when asked for their views on successfully running your own business. Even if some of these tips are generally known hearing them and discussing them in an open forum provided greater recognition of the things we all need to consider to run our businesses successfully, even if the need to start your pension planning early is greater for some than others! Our next meeting will be held on 9 May 2016 and will, subject to confirmation, be held at The Crown Hotel in the centre of Faringdon starting at 7.30am.

Sunday 5.30am mid January, is probably not the best time to be heading for the far north of Scotland (but then someone has to do it, as they say). The mission - to look at distilleries, the production process and the people involved. At 0 degrees, with the temperature dropping, snow starting to fall at Birmingham, the M6 down to two lanes and not a gritter in sight, it was all looking rather ominous. However, by the Lake District it was a crystal clear morning and with the fells covered in snow, the M6 was car-less (people had voted with blankets and stayed in bed) and motorway travelling doesn’t get much better than that. My first port of call was the long closed Rosebank Distillery. Considered one of the great Lowland single malt whiskies, possibly one of Scotland's top five distilleries, Rosebank operated the triple distillation process that was traditional in the region. Mothballed in 1993, it will never produce again, the stills and copperwork have reputedly been stolen! The whisky is likened by some to a more robust Highland malt with a hint of citrus but sadly some of the more recent bottlings have matured in poor casks and are achieving high prices more for label value than contents. Lying beside the Forth and Clyde Canal, the distillery now looks like a cadaver, with limbs either missing or converted into flats and a burger eatery. What remains looked very lost and forlorn on this snowy day! Rosebank and St Magdalene Distillery (my next port of call) both have close proximity to the canal network, very important for transporting whisky. Interestingly, close by on the same system are the amazing Falkirk Wheel and the even more awesome and unforgettable Kelpies that change colour at night! Well worth calling in to see. No time to dally, it was on to see the old St Magdalene distillery, built about 1800. It had up to five stills but latterly four stills until the day it closed in 1983, and is now developed into luxury flats (what a place to live!). Also known as Linlithgow, it was considered an excellent Lowland malt whisky and though most of it went for blending the single malt can be found in a number of styles. Older bottlings often have a hint of peat and the more recent bottlings are very often sherried (i.e. matured in ex Sherry casks). Like Rosebank, the whiskies are still available but with ever increasing prices and when we receive allocations they sell almost immediately even with a £400+ price tag!

London Street Barbers
Back with a Snip!‌.. The Lovely Mirella Draper of London Street Barbers has opened her doors, on the 1st March. Welcoming all her old and new customers in, with her well loved smile and bubbly personality! Mirella has lived and grown up here in Faringdon. She took a year's break in Italy and discovered her love of hairdressing. Returning home, she trained under Ron Young the then owner of the Barbers Shop in London Street, Mirella bought this off him in 1996 as he retired. Mirella became the first trained lady barber in Faringdon, running a successful barbers shop for the next 12 years. In 2008 she sold up, married her wonderful husband Neil, our local butcher from Pat Thomas’s and had her two youngest children. After recovering from a bad dose of ill health three years ago, started working again locally. A few months ago, chatting with Mirella in the salon she had a barber's chair in, she said she had decided to take the plunge and go it alone in what use to be the old dry cleaners in London street, the shop was run down and really needed a fresh new look, thank goodness for family, her superstar Dad stepped in and worked an absolute miracle! Mirella and her husband Neil set out on a lengthy road trip up to Newcastle to buy from The Good Barber, a pair of classic Belmont barbers chairs, which do give the salon the feel of a retro gentleman's club atmosphere. Mirella has the ability to create a relaxed, humorous and most pleasurable experience for the gentlemen customers. Not forgetting to mention the handsome, skilful creations, the men are walking out with, classical looks for the elder clients and incredible high fashion doo's for the younger chaps, Mirella's attention to detail is of the utmost importance, as is the enjoyment of the customers visit! Whether you are an old customers or band new to the area and Mirella's London Street Barbers, you will be made to feel welcome and have a most enjoyable barbers experience. I really love new potatoes. There are vast amounts of different dishes you can make with them. Not just boil and butter them, not just roast them. And you don't even have to peel them, which in my opinion is a massive bonus! Just a little wash perhaps and then off you go. So in season now, you will find the wonderful Jersey Royal, So have fun cooking and embark on a royal visit. These little treasures are amongst the fantastic collection of seasonal beauties we have in the UK. They sit along side wonders such as asparagus, rhubarb and goose eggs even. Grown in jersey - of course they would have to be! - the royals have been part of our meal times for many years and have a taste all of their own. Mostly grown on slopes overlooking the sea, the farmers traditionally use a wonderful fertiliser in the form of local seaweed, known as Vraic. This fantastic resource helps to enhance the sweet, creamy flavour of the Jersey Royal. Once ready, the potatoes grown in coastal sloping fields are then harvested by hand, only the later crops in fields further back are collected mechanically. And you will know you have a Jersey as they have official recognition in the form of a PDO which is a protected designation of origin, much the same as say, champagne. So why not try boiling them and then crushing them with a couple of spoons of creme fraiche, a handful of chopped curly parsley and some salt and black pepper. I love cooking them in a large sauté pan with plenty of onions and goose fat to start with and then once tender, top with a layer of soft cheese, like taleggio, pop a lid on, then let the cheese melt for a few minutes. Serve with a crusty loaf. And for a stonking potato add a spoonful of horseradish and 100g crispy bacon along with the mayonnaise and onions. So in these busy times it is great to have all in one dishes that are quick and simple. And I do love a tray bake! Take around 400g Jersey royals and cut them in half. Scatter them in a baking tray along with a large red onion, wedged. Add a couple of handfuls of chantenay carrots, peeled and wedged raw beetroot, and 2 fennel cut in half then in to wedges. Douse generously with olive or rapeseed oil, season and toss everything together. Roast at 200°c/gas mark 6 for 30 minutes then top with perhaps a couple of chicken legs or 6 sausages. Maybe even a couple of pieces of lamb rump. Roast again for 25 minutes. Pour in 75ml double cream - or add a few cherry tomatoes - and give it another 5 minutes or so. Scatter with a generous handful chopped parsley and serve as is! Oh, perhaps with a glass of vino or a local apple juice. A couple of weeks ago I was in the car on route to a hen-do. I was half way across the country when I realised my period had just started. This was an unexpected and early surprise. I stopped at a service station and bought some sanitary products and a smoothie. The man at the check out sheepishly asked me if I wanted a bag. I declined and he looked even more embarrassed that I would be displaying my sanitary products as I walked through the shop to find the toilet. In my head I heard the voice of Catlin Moran and a sudden urge came over me to climb on to the counter and announce to all the customers that – Yes! – I had just started my period and that this was 2016 and women should not feel embarrassed or ashamed for bleeding once a month. Instead of announcing it in such a dramatic way, I silently told the other customers by walking to the toilet without a bag. And then got back on the M25 to join the rest of London. It got me thinking about why this man felt embarrassed and why so many of us discreetly take our sanitary products to the toilet rather than holding them aloft for all to see. I concluded that we just don’t talk about it enough and so it stays a hidden subject. In my job, I talk about periods all the time with the women that I treat. The signs of your period show what is happening with your hormones and general health. A normal period should be a 28 day cycle, with no pain, no mood swings, no clots, no digestive issues and no headaches. It should be a smooth transition and a time to draw in, but you should not feel exhausted (or embarrassed!). How many of us have a ‘normal’ period? There are many easy changes you can make to smooth out your PMS and get a pain free, enjoyable period. Take exercise for example, it’s good to do aerobic exercise and swimming throughout your cycle, but not right before or during your period. Aerobic exercise depletes your body when it is done at the wrong time. Swimming during a period can make pain worse. Find out more and book a Health Strategy Session. Call Rachel on: 07917 411552. P.S. The Women’s Health Café will no longer be at The Rookery. I am starting an online group instead to make it more accessible and to support more women. Details to follow soon x

Starting off this month a reminder that microchipping of all dogs from 8 weeks of age and over has to be done, it is every dog owner’s responsibility to ensure that their dog has a microchip implanted and also that it’s registered on one of the authorised commercial databases. All working dogs have been microchipped for a very long time, including the familiar Guide Dogs, usually Labrador Retrievers. There has been a scientific paper recently published, with the disturbing subject, the rise in attacks by other dogs on working Guide Dogs - dogs clearly on a harness and in “uniform”. The GDBA data tells us that over 11 attacks occur every single month, half of which required veterinary care after being physically injured. This at an estimated cost of more than £34,000 per annum. Thirteen qualified Guide Dogs costing the GDBA over £650,000 had to be withdrawn from working and more than two-thirds of the dog handlers in those attacks reported significant effects on their emotional wellbeing after their dog had been attacked. Data has shown that almost all attacks were in public spaces, with the aggressors being unrestrained for the most part, with an owner but off-lead or without any owner present at all. By putting a loose dog back on its lead when a clearly identified Guide Dog is working in that area would be a great help in reducing unnecessary and distressing attacks. The lives and achievements of working dogs of another type, those of water rescue and therapy dogs, were celebrated by the posthumous PDSA Order of Merit award to a Newfoundland called “Whizz”, who died aged 12 only very recently. Such awards of course also imply recognition to the owners, handlers and charities where these great dogs have their place. Whizz worked for the Royal Navy Rescue as well as the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) and Marine Volunteer Service (MVS) charities. Whizz saved 9 people and one dog from drowning in his 10 year career. He also touched the lives of hundreds of people on water safety demonstration days and through visiting hospitals, nursing homes, hospices and to service personnel injured in the line of duty. A very special dog indeed and a big loss to his owner, Mr Pugh and to his handler, Miss Ellie Bedford (The Dog Studio, Woolstone), who is currently still developing her water safety career while training as a veterinary nurse at Bristol. Thank you all for giving us such a strong, gentle and emotionally intuitive companion. Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

Healthy Tips!
Pros and Cons of Rapid Weight Loss We are surrounded by weight loss programmes: Atkins, Dukan, the South Beach Diet, Weight Watchers, Slimming World and the Cambridge Diet to name but a few. While some of these may deliver rapid weight loss, there is of course a difference between some of these programmes and weight loss as a result of eating healthily over the long term. According to the NHS if you're overweight, losing weight will bring you a range of important health benefits. The way we monitor if we’re overweight is to measure our BMI, however even though the BMI scale is a guide to where you should be with your weight, it does not take into account your body composition which I feel is more important. Almost everyone would like to eliminate their excess body weight quickly. However rapid weight loss can be extremely unhealthy. As a general rule, it is thought that a safe amount of weight to lose on a weekly basis is between 2 and 5 pounds. It's common for individuals to lose a larger amount of body weight during the first couple of weeks of their weight loss program as their basal metabolic rate is higher, and a larger percentage of their weight loss is associated with water weight. Also the heavier you are the more weight you are likely to lose. Rapid weight loss is typically unsustainable over the course of a weight loss program. One reason for the decrease in the rate of weight loss per week is that the basal metabolic rate (number of calories an individual burns in a typical day) decreases as the individual decreases the number of calories they consume per day. Also, as your weight reduces you’re carrying less weight around each day, so potentially burning fewer calories to do the same activities I have witnessed a lot of weight loss programmes during my time helping people improve their life. Although I think some programmes are more of a concern than others it is best for the individual to decide what works for them. Having greater knowledge is the best way forward to understanding what is happening during your programme. I try to encourage those that are on programmes I have concerns about, to think hard about how they will behave after the diet has finished. Changing eating and lifestyle habits is the only way to maintain healthy weight loss in the long-term. Negative effects associated with rapid weight loss can be as follows: Ÿ Low resting blood pressure Ÿ Headaches Ÿ Sore throat Ÿ Fatigue or lack of energy Ÿ Missed periods Ÿ Constipation Ÿ Bloodshot eyes Ÿ Rapid and frequent mood changes Ÿ Increase in stress Ÿ Insomnia Ÿ Vomiting or nausea Ÿ Depression Ÿ Bad breath Ÿ Flatulence Ÿ Hair loss Ÿ Muscle loss Erratic results, lean muscle mass loss, decreased energy and nutritional deficiency can be some of the dangers of rapid weight loss. Losing weight safely is always the best way to make changes to your size and shape, even though there may be good health reasons to get the weight off as quickly as possible. Lifestyle changes that facilitate good health and fitness through exercise, nutrition, rest and relaxation always have long-term positive results. Home Grown Winemaking in England is hardly a new activity. Vines were planted back in Roman times, followed by monasteries that preserved the tradition. In 1086, the Domesday Book recorded 42 vineyards. It petered out with the dissolution of the monasteries coupled with climatic and agricultural changes. Then, part way through the last decade, English vine growing was revived. Over the past fifteen years, the industry has become increasingly more prominent. The UK has a marginal climate for ripening grapes, which is on the increase with the effects of global warming. Attention has been drawn to Kent and Sussex, where regions with chalky soils have been compared to those of Champagne in France. In 2014, it was recorded that 6.3 million bottles of English wine was produced, 66% sparkling, 24% white wine, the balance made up of rosé and red wine, with an approximate retail value of £82 million. In the last 16 years, English sparkling wines have won 8 trophies for Best International Sparkling Wine and 6 trophies for Best Sparkling Rosé in global competitions – as yet no other country has achieved this! English Wine Week (28th May – 5th June) is a national campaign, designed to raise the awareness of English wine across the country through retail outlets, pubs and restaurants. Vineyards across the country will open their doors to welcome visitors, offering tours and tasting's. To keep up to date with information and events check out www.englishwineproducers.co.uk In the meantime, you may wish to celebrate all things British with something home grown… Goring Brut NV South Downs, West Sussex Den Boer Wines £32.99 A blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier (as found in Champagne, no less!) grown on the chalky soils of the South Downs in West Sussex. Fermented in stainless steel and given time to develop in bottle after secondary fermentation, this sparkling wine is elegant and complex, combining a youthful purity of fruit with subtle toasty, nutty notes. Three Choirs Classic Cuvée NV Gloucestershire Waitrose £16.99 Based near Newent, Gloucestershire, Three Choirs is a consistent producer of great English wines. Produced from 80% seyval blanc and 20% pinot noir, it is dry and elegant with elderflower and greengage aromas and flavours. Donna 01367
