Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Having held a very successful meeting in March at Sudbury House Hotel we returned for our April meeting with slight trepidation as it was April Fool’s Day. Even with a baker’s dozen in attendance we were luckily to get through the meeting without any mishaps or embarrassing moments, and it was nice to see some members who have not been able to attend regularly over the past few months. With a great choice of breakfasts available it presented some of our members with difficult choices to make but we soon sat down and started our ’60-second’ round. We heard from our members on a wide and diverse range of topics: from marketing to accountancy to coaching with IT training, printing, HR, and legal as well as CRM software and conference facilities and last but not least voice recognition software from Neil Sleight who was our speaker. Neil from ‘Talking Typist’ told us about how he had been involved in assessing and supporting children with dyslexia for nearly 25 years and how this had evolved into his current role as a trainer and supporter of a voice recognition software programme called Dragon. Neil gave us an excellent presentation where he used voice recognition software in a live scenario, and it was easy to see how useful it could be. He told us about the people who he had helped overcome challenges of producing typed reports and it was amazing to hear about the different ways this type of software can be of benefit to them. Faringdon Bell Ringers Those who live near All Saints Church had a quiet evening on 15th April. Did you notice ? It is traditional for church bells not to be rung during Holy Week between Palm Sunday and Easter morning so we took the opportunity to hold our AGM. We were very pleased that Steve Bellamy, our Vicar, was able to chair the meeting. Following a year of teaching new recruits Clare Knock was re-elected as Tower Captain for the following year. Katharine Timberlake who used to write this column will continue to maintain the bells until she has fitted the new bell ropes she’s ordered. Julian Watson was elected as Steeple Keeper to succeed her. The new ropes will be a first for Faringdon in that they are mostly polyester and should last longer than before. The ringers are very appreciative of the legacy left to All Saints by Lewis Boffin for maintenance of the bells and clock. The cost of the new ropes will be shared between the legacy and the ringers. Tom Edgeworth who many will remember from Tesco’s has re-joined us and he will be taking us on an outing later in the year. There’s still time to join us if you’d like to come ! On Thursday 18th April All Saints joined churches all over England in tolling a bell at 7.00pm to show our sorrow at the Notre Dame disaster. Thanks to Caroline Phillips who was the ringer. Wendy Tynan has been to a bellringing course so may be showing up the rest of us – we need to look to our laurels. Continue on Page…. 20

Hello and once more a big welcome to all things considered of interest in the World around us. Black holes included, it seems. Only a mere 27,000 light years away at the centre of “our” Galaxy – or 55,000,000 light years away in the Messier 87 Galaxy. Close enough! May – a month of promises, of Summer to be, the start of successful rearing of young, of tadpoles, of migration - and of more blossom for bees, butterflies and moths – even anticipating the buzz and sounds of Summer. Thoughts too of “will the new bird boxes – including our swift nest boxes give someone a home this year?”. We may not be aware of what this side of Summer may have in store, but the February and March weather pattern has been very different to last year. Only the recent cold, almost frosty weather has slowed the passing of daffodils and forsythia. In our lawn, the many clusters, constellations and galaxies of Celandine flowers have been shining away for weeks , making even high-set grass cutting quite a work of art, with no-cut areas until the leaves go yellow. The preservation of all the bold lawn dandelion flowers for the early insects has been worthwhile too, judging by feeding insect activity. Climate change help – how about urinals for cows?! Cow toilets, created by Dutch inventor in a bid to tackle emissions from urine. A cow is never going to be completely clean but you can teach them to go to the toilet. Cows on trial farms in Holland are stimulated to void urine into urinals wherever and whenever they trough-feed. The urine can be handled in such a way as to reduce ammonia formation (which is in effect loss of fertilising nitrogen). Urinals will also be in place soon in milking parlours, catching urine in a similar way, in order to separate it from faecal slurry, which by this simple separation, greatly reduces the loss of nitrogen as ammonia when the slurry alone is stored and when spread on pastures as normal. I know that I was regularly splashed while milking all those years ago, but the old-style dairy smell never leaves my memory-bank. It includes the rich, spicy-sweet smell of cow concentrate pellets eaten by the cows when being milked, as they rattled their way down the hopper from the silo above. I would like to add a very BIG and IMPORTANT thank you to all my lovely clients who so generously contributed to my charities at the retirement “bash” at work and on other occasions. Thank you also for enriching my wine cellar with superb choices. To make the decision to sell was a very hard one and maybe equally hard for you to understand, but it has been done in a way over the past year for you all to know about it and be given time to come to terms with it. The money donated will be going to The Labrador Rescue Trust (LRT), Sunshine Cat Rescue and to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. A whopping £500. Thank you all SO MUCH. You may not have realised or been told that my veterinary work continues, through charity work, professional skills training and working as a Locum Vet. I still consider that I have much to learn and to give back to the one profession that I consider the best in the World. I started realising my destiny when I was 7 and it included dairy farming by 9. Alf Wight as James Heriot will always be my inspiration in the way he worked. I also have more time to be able to share with all my readers; your loyalty is inspiring as well as a humbling experience. Enjoy the month of May! Until June, take care. Robert Elliott

In a Lonely Place by Dorothy B Hughes
Accompanying the hype surrounding the return of Game of Thrones this past week, there have been a flurry of social media posts, and commentators making it known that they ‘have never seen Game of Thrones’. Many utter it politely, but there are always people that want to make a point of how ‘idiotic’ they think the whole thing is. For every ‘fandom’ we have the naysayers. I get it on some levels – with our 24-hour media culture it can all be a bit much. It seems that no one could move without being consumed by hype– whether it’s Game of Thrones, or the latest Avengers superhero movie. But on other levels I don’t get it. People can often be mean-spirited and contrary for the sake of it. I personally haven’t yet started on Game of Thrones because I bought the book box set in a Black Friday sale, and want to work my way through that before I start on the filmed versions. Claire Meadows
Films of books can be a mixed bag. Especially if either the book or the film is a favourite of yours – why would you want either to be ‘tainted’ by a bad effort to adapt it? I had no such worry with this month’s book In a Lonely Place. It’s one from the archives, having been published in 1947. It was adapted for film in 1950, directed by Nicholas Ray, and staring Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame. It’s one of my favourite films. And is very different from the book. The characters are present and correct in both, but the book is a much, much darker beast than the film. Dix Steele in the book is a WW2 veteran adjusting to life away from combat in Los Angeles. He becomes enamoured and obsessed with his neighbour, Laurel Gray, and the two embark on an affair. Meanwhile, a killer is stalking young women in Los Angeles. This is a great read if you love the crime noir genre. It’s not a long read, and if you’re anything like me you’ll gobble it up in no time. Then, my recommendation would be to get hold of the film, and marvel at how, even though they’re different, they are both compelling and have you by the throat until their gripping ends.

Happy
The Clanfield Tavern
Dining
Sitting here on the most glorious Good Friday I remember in years, with the sun warm enough to be able to put a tea shirt on, the smell of the blossoms and flowers in the air and the scent of freshly cut grass, what a pleasure to sit down and write this most enjoyable food review for the Clanfield Tavern. Most people from around the Faringdon area will know Jackie Smith, from previously having Just Jacks and Ruby Jacks. Jackie has taken on this brand-new project which I must say she is doing a tremendous job of, with the help of her partner who is the wonderful chef there, Dan Broda. We arrived at 7:00 on Friday night, the place was absolutely buzzing with very happy customers, some of whom I recognised from Faringdon itself, some tourists, a few families with children, all enjoying a drink or a bite to eat. The Clanfield Tavern has a very warm feel to it, as soon as you walk through the old wooden door. Jackie has kept to its olde worlde décor, face brick walls and beautiful wooden beams. This is something that I thoroughly enjoy, it’s like being taken back in time, which is a treat, as most of my life, I’ve spent in a relatively young country, compared to the UK and Europe, with next to nothing in historical buildings, it certainly makes you appreciate history and of course the architecture of buildings here! To start with I had the most delicious starter I’ve have had in a long time, Lechlade Trout Salad with herb mayonnaise, rhubarb and watercress it was fresh and light and seasoned perfectly, as you can see in the photographs the plating of this dish was a work of art, just looking at it made me enjoy it, without even one mouth full! I could have eaten this as a main course, just a lot more of it, as the dish was so very me, I loved it and recommend it to everyone. My partner had the Farmhouse Pork Terrine with homemade Piccalilli and toast, he said it reminded him of being in France, a wonderful compliment as it takes a lot to come close to real French Terrine. Next, I chose from the specials board, and lucky me, as it was the last in the kitchen that night, my main course was lemon Sole, this was served with cockles, samphire, dill and new potatoes. I can still remember the flavour, it was light and lemony, the sole was off the bone, I found no bones which made it a perfect dish for me, lovely. My partner had the mixed grill which was also on the specials board that night, he has a large appetite and said he could barely finish it (he did though) so he was thrilled, as with many restaurants he walks out of them still hungry. I must admit, I have taken him to McDonalds on one occasion after a meal out, now that’s the size eater he is! It was Steak, Gammon, Sausage, black pudding, Chicken in breadcrumbs and cooked tomatoes on the vine served with chips, he said it was delicious and a very hearty meal. To round the meal off very well, I had the selection of British cheeses, Godminster Cheddar, Cricket St. Thomas Brie, Barkham Blue, served with crackers, chutney, slices of apple, celery and grapes all beautifully presented on a slate, it was very tasty for me considering I normally go for the most chocolaty sweet pudding on the menu, made a very tasty change! My partner had the Chocolate Delice with honeycomb ice cream, which was an absolute treat, totally delectable, a must when not watching your weight! Chocolatey with a hint of rum with creamy homemade ice cream with little crumbs of honeycomb in it, wonderful. What a pleasure the whole evening was, wonderful delicious food and wine in a warm and friendly atmosphere with excellent service. I would encourage you to book and have your next meal at the Clanfield Tavern, it’s my new favourite place to eat in this area! Jackie and Dan have worked their magic, you won’t be disappointed!

First Steps Consultancy Ruth 07969 451 366 Self Soothing for Babies Self soothing is a common problem for all babies, this is something they have to ‘learn’ and something that doesn’t necessarily happen straight away. Lots of my clients say to me “She never sleeps during the day” or “I cant put him down, as soon as I do, he wakes up”. As hard as this is, it is very normal, and just a phase that will pass. My first piece of advice would be to not worry about it, and to enjoy the cuddles, without feeling pressurised to put them down as soon as they fall asleep, the new born stage passes so quickly, I really do not see any problem with them relaxing with their baby. As a Sleep Consultant, I only offer sleep consultations to babies over six months, as any kind of ‘sleep training’ before this can be detrimental to their emotional wellbeing. However, I do believe that that we can gently support babies to learn to self soothe, and form ‘Sleep Association by using very gentle techniques. I use a technique where I help parents to use words to comfort their children when they are struggling to sleep, rather than to rock them or cuddle them to sleep. A single phrase, such as, “Its sleep time, Mummy loves you” can be enough to form a Sleep Association, and make babies feel safe and secure and allow themselves to self-settle to sleep. When you have very little babies, around four months, you can say this, when you are sitting directly next to them and you can rock the Moses Basket or pram at the same time, so that they also have some movement, without actually being held. When they are younger than this, you can also rest a hand on their tummy while they are in their cot/Moses basket and you can say the phrase, as then they will know you are there. Only persevere for very short periods of time, and make sure that you let your baby see you at regular intervals, so that they know you are still there, as otherwise they will panic. If your baby is still unsettled after a few minutes of doing this, please stop, and pick them up. You can always try again half an hour or so later. When you have established the phrase as a ‘Sleep association’ you can use it wherever you are, and anytime your little one is upset or struggling to drift off to sleep! I can support with this, as well as lots of other common childhood problems, such as behaviour management, fussy eating, toilet training, weaning, parenting techniques and breastfeeding. If you are having any kind of challenge with your child, please get in touch, I would love to help you!! ARTWEEKS IN LITTLEWORTH Again this year, as part of Oxfordshire Artsweek, a distinct group of artists are having their exhibition in the lovely old Reading Room in Littleworth village which is off the A420 between Faringdon and Kingston Bagpuize. Ceramicist Marjut Roberts’ work continues to be simple forms in a rustic, austere style with peeling paint and rust-like surface. Inspiration for her work comes from observation of objects and information around and also from creative energies from within herself. Yvonne Robinson's body of work this year consists of collagraphs and collages asking the questions of ‘Where?, What?, When? and Why?’. She is naturally affected by the physical world around her and her work reflects this, making it always intriguing and thought provoking. The work of Seija Wentworth is based on personal experience flowers from her own beautiful garden, annual field trips to Africa and people and animals she has met. Refreshments with homemade cakes, demonstrations and free parking available. The exhibition will be open every day from 11am to 6pm from Saturday 11 to Sunday 19 May 2019 Yvonne Robinson 01367 718274

A trail will be signposted through the village and visitors are warmly encouraged to come and see what is on offer. A range of pieces will be available to purchase along with a selection of greetings cards. Many of the artists will be demonstrating their work during the weekend so there should be lots to see and do with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. There will also be a plant sale at the local church and of course the now famous refreshments will be available at the Reading Room. Vegetables are hated by some of us when we are children and disliked or considered boring by many of us as adults. Yes, broccoli or kale did taste bitter as we reluctantly chewed on it when we were 8 years old, and our taste buds were still developing. We didn’t like it or try it then so we won’t like it or try it now! But that would be a mistake - we miss out on a lot of nutrients when we choose not to eat our vegetables. Whether you are looking to lose weight, improve your health or manage your energy, eating a wide range of vegetables with different colours and textures is likely to improve your vitamin and mineral profile as well as increase your fibre intake. (Diets high in fibre have been shown to reduce the likelihood of developing bowel cancer among many other benefits.) Getting your long list of nutrients from food is so crucial that it’s tempting to rely on supplements. They do help but they are just that - supplements to a healthy and varied diet. We used to eat leaves, roots, berries, meat and fish from natural sources when we had a hunter-gatherer diet. Less so now we are supermarket shoppers! Leafy greens are rich in vitamins B, A, C, K and minerals which are good for the brain, immune system, the health of our blood vessels and bones. Vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli cauliflower, onions and garlic as well as mushrooms contain sulphur which is used by many processes in the body. Colourful fruits and berries as well as vegetables such as carrots, beetroot and peppers add antioxidants into our diet. All are great sources of fibre. High quality protein is also necessary in our diet and it’s can be obtained from plant sources such as legumes (chickpeas, kidney beans etc.) or by eating nuts, meat, fish and eggs - also sources of healthy fats. Of course we can choose to eat our convenient, processed food that we love so much, or we could ‘crowd it out’ with lots of fruit and vegetables. By eating those first, cooked or uncooked, we massively increase our uptake of crucial nutrients and only then should we settle down to eating low nutrient-dense foods - if we have any space left! You can eat your vegetables in many different ways: ● Steamed ● Boiled ● Ferment them (pickles) ● Have them in soup ● In smoothies ● As a dip ● Eat them cooked or raw in salads ● Cook from frozen or straight from the garden ● If you really hate them then get them in powdered form! Fill your boots!!!!! If you are particularly resistant to change then increase the nutrients in your processed food by adding vegetables gradually – maybe improve your pizza topping by adding cooked or raw asparagus – add more mushrooms, fresh tomatoes or sun dried tomatoes, or maybe artichokes in oil, chopped onions, kale or spinach. Try it you might just like it! We all have a choice! What will yours be? Rich Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com

GLASS
A true reflection of quality Artist of the Month Louise Russell Faringdon Town Council is pleased to have Louise Russell as May’s Artist of the month. Louise has been taking photographs for many years and has enjoyed using film cameras, digital cameras and her iPhone. It’s fair to say that photography is a passion of hers, and something she just cannot get enough of. Being a busy working wife and mother means it’s not always easy finding the time to take photographs. Trying her hand at all areas of photography, Louise particularly enjoys macro, flower and nature photography. You may have seen her in our local meadows photographing butterflies, bees and beetles. Louise has had work published in Cotswold Life magazine, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust Members magazine and the Swindon Advertiser. In 2017 one of her photos was chosen from over 11,000 images submitted to feature in a book published to raise money for Children in Need. The book features over 300 pictures selected by professional photographer Rankin. In 2018 two of her wildlife photography images were selected by National Garden Gift Vouchers to be used in their gift card range. Louise has also had her work exhibited at a top London Photography store as part of a national exhibition. Recently, Louise decided to take the leap into the handmade market and use her photos to create unique greeting cards, mounted photos and framed photos that are just perfect for giving as gifts. Her square cards are designed to be framed brightening any room. If you would like to see more of Louise’s images, then please visit her Instagram and Facebook accounts. https://instagram.com/louruss https://www.facebook.com/louiserussellphotography Visit the Information Centre in the Pump House during May to see Louise’s work, open 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 9:30am to 1pm on Saturdays.

The Perennial Property Dilemma
If I see a house I like, do I need to have sold mine before I ask to view? Many sellers are on the market as they need to move whether for financial, work or family reasons. For others, your reasons maybe more inspirational and the chances are that you will not have been actively scouring the property portals when you “stumble” across a house that appeals (seeing a marketing board on a house you have secretly coveted or walked past the local estate agents window and one catches your eye) and it starts you thinking about a move. At that point you will naturally be tempted to ring the agent and ask to view. One of the questions you are likely to be asked will be “And what is your current position”. By that we don’t mean whether you are sitting in your kitchen with a cup of tea or mid-way through reorganising your vinyl collection.
It is about whether you would be able to progress a purchase of the property you wish to view, either because you are a cash buyer, first time buyer or have an offer on your property which is acceptable. If you are none of the above, then whether you will be able to view will depend a great deal the level of other “proceedable” interest in the property and on the vendor as some may request viewing's to be only with proceedable buyers. If you have reached this stage and remain excited by the thought of moving you need to do a few simple tasks. First take advice on what your current home is worth - what is known as a market appraisal provided by a local estate agent. Ask for a realistic view on its value and its likely market appeal. Have a chat with the agent to discuss whether or not the house you would like to buy is going to be in your price range. Ask about the current market; Are houses selling quickly? How often does the type of home you like come to the market? Secondly take some financial advice on what you can afford based on the value of your home and what mortgage repayments you can cover. And, if you still have eyes on that dream house - and if it is still on the market – then go and talk to the selling agent. Whilst you may still not be “proceedable” you will now be able to demonstrate a much stronger level of commitment to making a move than when you rang a week previously. Taking this common sense approach can go a long way in the world of buying and selling property.
