Club Chairman, Paul Brame, kicked off proceedings by welcoming three new members. Each member in turn then briefly introduced their business and the kind of opportunities they’re looking for, and Paul chose to introduce himself with one of his trademark poems. The main business of the breakfast was a ‘1-2-1’ session, as members got together in pairs for a quick ten minutes to share business opportunities and offers, before moving on to their next chosen face-to-face. It is a great way to pick each other’s brains. As always, conversations continued after the session, and many valuable contacts were reinforced. Mary Thomas of Concise Training told us about an exciting new community venture – CoderDojo. This is a coding club for young people. Apart from helping them get to grips with IT, it also develops the valuable life skills of logic and testing. The first meeting will be at Costa Coffee at 6pm on 29th April for school years 5-6 (accompanied by a parent or guardian). Participants will need to book in advance on http://zen.coderdojo.com/dojo/607 The Breakfast Club’s next meeting will be on 12th May when Valerie King will talk about the Nasio Trust, working with young people in Kenya. Business Update The Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate Andrew Hayter and Bethia Thomas on their appointment as the new Town Centre Coordinators, picking up and building on the sterling work undertaken by Mirabelle Mack. They have hit the ground running and came to present to our meeting, last month, about the projects that they will be working on. One of these projects is the expansion of the Faringdon Loyalty Card scheme, which is about to enter its third year. We have dedicated our next meeting solely to discuss the scheme. This will be held on Monday 12 May 2014 at the Old Town Hall starting at 6:30pm. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss best practice in loyalty and retail marketing. We will have representatives from Abingdon, Wantage and Thame as well as Faringdon to share their experiences of similar schemes and discuss what has or hasn’t worked and ask why with a view to improving them for the future. This will be followed by a round table discussion facilitated by Guy Chatburn of Rewardingvisits.com. Please do come and have your say at what promises to be a very interesting event. Respond to trudy.godfrey@southandvale.gov.uk if you would like to come as there is limited space in the venue so don’t delay. Take the opportunity to give your feedback on the loyalty card scheme by taking part in our simple on-line survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/D5B3RWR - all participants completing the survey before the end of May will be entered into a prize draw. The Chamber of Commerce was delighted to present the Town Council’s Community Business Award to Lesley Holdship of “Hare in the Woods”.

Coming into Bowmore, Islay’s main centre of habitation, you pass the rather quirky circular church – built in that shape so as to prevent the devil hiding in the corners! Going on down the wide main street to the bottom of the hill you come to the attractive harbour, then situated right next to the sea, Bowmore Distillery. As with other Islay distilleries, this location made great sense logistically when the distillery was founded in 1779 (which, incidentally, makes it the oldest distillery on Islay) as provisions could easily be shipped in and the whisky dispatched far and wide. Bowmore is an interesting distillery to visit as it still has its own floor maltings and these produce 40% of the distillery’s malt requirements. This makes for a particularly interesting tour, as does the knowledge and enthusiasm of the staff, and the fabulous views from the visitor centre are the icing on the cake even (perhaps, especially) on a wild and windy Islay day when the sea is lashing against the distillery. Like the majority of distilleries on Islay, Bowmore’s whiskies are peated but the medium peating level means their malts are smoky rather than medicinal and you will often also detect the distillery’s trademark notes of ‘parma violet’ in its whiskies. If you’ve not tried an Islay malt before then a dram from Bowmore would be an ideal place to start and their description of the 12 year old as being like ‘vanilla ice cream at a beach bonfire’ evokes beautifully a malt that makes a great introduction to the distillery’s range. Leading on from the 12 year old is the 15 year old - matured in bourbon and oloroso casks. The heady mix of dark chocolate, dried fruits, toffee and smoke make this a rich and complex dram that is very addictive. The 18 and 25 year old in the core range continue and expand on this theme of chocolate and fruit, with the addition of some nuttiness in the case of the 25 year old. Bowmore also release some limited editions and one of my current favourites is Tempest Batch 4. The whiskies from each batch are all distinctly different from each other but the common thread that runs through is a citrus element allied with smoke and an unmistakable salty tang. Batch 5 will be with us any day soon and I can’t wait to try it. In fact, there’s lots to look forward to over the next month or so as not only are several new expressions from Bowmore due in but also some of the range will be featuring in our June whisky tasting so if you want to give them a try sign up for our newsletter now at www.whiskyandwines.com so you don’t miss out on getting a ticket! Finding Value This article has been in the back of my mind for some time and has now thrust itself into the limelight, swept off the coat tails of the Chancellor, George Osborne’s recent budget. As much as it would delight me no end to have a good old rant about the injustices of the continued rises in the costs of living etc., the aim here is to share with you the breakdown of the associated costs inside a bottle of wine; many of which are hidden. Firstly, looking at the cost of what we will refer to as ‘entry level’ wine priced at £5.99 or under, the largest part of the cost is that of the government’s duty and VAT charges of 51%. This is closely followed by the associated costs of production (43%), which includes the costs of winery labour, shipping, general winery overheads, retailer’s margins, advertising etc. The final portion coming in at a whopping 6% is allocated to the wine itself. Moving up the scale, towards the £9.99 price point, the duty and VAT account for 37% and other costs 39%, increasing the value of the wine to 24%. At this level, more care would have been taken in grape berry selection at harvest, the wine may have had longer maturation times or been influenced by oak. Location also has its part to play in the pricing equation. The price of the grapes is influenced by how desirable their region is; the more posh the address, the higher the price. For example, basic chardonnay grapes from Burgundy will command a higher premium than those from the Languedoc. Branding and product placement adds more variables to the mix – where paying £10 for a Bordeaux red will buy you an entry level wine, the same money will buy you a premium level Chilean or Argentinian wine. This then leads onto the question that is often raised: ‘is a £9.99 wine nearly twice as better than a £5.99 wine?’ This is very difficult to quantify. The facts and cost breakdown would imply a definite ‘yes’, one would have a ‘better’ quality wine. However, as I often express to those who pose this question, each of us are different and appreciate different aromas and flavours in wine. There is no right and wrong here. What appeals to one may not appeal to another; one person would rate a youthful fruity Australian Shiraz priced at £7.99 over a complex, concentrated £60 Bordeaux wine any day! The Gifted Magpie celebrated its first birthday last month. The gift shop opened in London Street last April, and in spite of these tough economic times, it has gone from strength to strength. Shop owner, Rachel, writes about her first year in Faringdon: The year has flown by so quickly. It took about six months to get established, but it was good to have that time to build up the stock and prepare for the Christmas rush! December was really busy, and business has remained steady into the new year - there are still plenty of local people coming in for the first time, which is very encouraging. I try to stock a diverse range of gifts - things that you won't necessarily find in other shops, or online, so sourcing new products is a constant challenge, although a very enjoyable one. A year into the business I am still developing the inventory, focusing on both quality and affordability, and adjusting the layout of the store to accommodate a wider selection. Shopping can be frustrating when you’re trying to find a gift, so I hope customers will find the products here more interesting than the average gift shop. Something that makes this shop unique is the selection of local goods - fine soaps from The Little Goat Soap Company, works of art by Kathy Webster, hand made gifts, prints, jewellery and textiles from Bohemian Pearl, and exclusive custom-made cushions from Becksie & Lotty. These artists and craftspeople are all an absolute joy to work with and they are creating fantastic things. Faringdon is such a friendly town and I have made some great friends. People are so kind and have made me feel very welcome. What's more, lots of people are actively supporting their local shops, I am fortunate to have some regular customers who always try to do their shopping in Faringdon. I am very grateful to these people, customers and friends, everyone who has supported me in getting the business off the ground. I would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm thank you.

| The Advertiser | page 11 | Our Lovely Pigs!…….. Take Compassion in World Farming campaigns at the moment – 475,576 signatures backed the campaign to support implementation of the EU Pigs directive, which was designed by the European Commission to ensure pig welfare standards through: ·

Banning the permanent housing of sow in stalls

·

Ensuring pigs have straw or other materials to root in and explore

·

Ending the routine docking of pigs’ tails

Whilst some progress has already been made on the sow stall ban, at least 235,000 pigs still remain illegally confined in sow stalls. The routine docking of pigs’ tails and housing of pigs in barren environments are still widespread. Then there is the campaign to end live farm animal exports, with the complementary campaign to reduce the maximum travelling time to 8 hours anywhere within the EU. In 2010 the numbers of animals exported from Great Britain had dropped to 4000 sheep and no calves. But by April 2011, more than 4,000 sheep and 600 calves had been exported. Since then, from May 2011 to December 2011, there were 32 crossings carrying 143 lorry loads of sheep and 39 lorry loads of calves. The main problem area is the welfare of those animals that travel through, then OUT of the protection of the EU, which is why the live export campaign becomes very relevant: http://www.ciwf.org.uk/what_we_do/live_transport/investigation_exports_from_the_european_union/default.aspx “Kill the flea, not the cat” is a poster message from the International Cat Care campaign to stop permethrin poisoning in cats. www.icatcare.org/permethrin/petition This will be a bigger seasonal issue as owners now buy DOG-licensed permethrin products, which are invariably fatal to cats in contact with dogs earlier than the 3 whole days of separation, post-DOG-application. Never, ever apply any permethrin to cats. Flea control IS important to the health of your cat but please chose the correct treatment and IF IN ANY DOUBT, PLEASE consult your veterinary practice, where many products, safe AND effective, are available for cats and dogs. Ending on a really happy note, do please explore this link to The Guardian’s recent article on Bob the Street Cat’s books, headlining with: Bob the Street Cat books sell 1 million copies in THE UK “Homeless busker James Bowen was helped in his struggle against addiction by the companionship of a stray cat…..” read on!! For those of you unable to view The Guardian article, online, dated 18th March 2014 “Bowen's agent .. heralded the story's "massive international success", saying "it goes to show that this lovely story, of the mutual love and respect between a man and his cat, resonates around the world". "I think I've opened people's eyes to things they never understood properly" said Bowen of the book's success. "I never ever thought I would be able to turn my life around … and be the voice of people who can't be heard."

Healthy Tips

Continued from April edition… Weight training – will women bulk up from heavy weight training? The desire to tone muscles but without building them One of the most commonly-stated myths in women’s health is that you can “tone” muscle without building muscle. The fitness industry and media use this term as an alternative to “building muscle” for more effective marketing. “Tone” is an aesthetically-pleasing euphemism used to avoid generating images of steroid-induced, bulky women bodybuilders. The toning myth has also led to the misconception that women should work out differently than men. To develop a fit, strong and feminine body, women need to train using the same type of equipment, applying the same principles of training, and performing the same exercise routines as men. There is no such thing as exercises for men and exercises for women. Fear of being judged by others and intimidated by free weights Many are intimidated by using the free-weight area of the gym, and how to lift the weights. It is possible to purchase equipment for home-based workouts until you gain a baseline level of experience and feel comfortable enough to join a gym. Others may seek out a qualified trainer that can teach them how to properly perform the exercises. So what conclusion might we reach? Well, that lifting weights makes a person ‘smaller’ – the density of fat vs. muscle tissue Muscle tissue is more compact than fat as it has a different density. Fat being very soft and loose, takes up more space than muscle does when comparing equal weights of both tissue types. Muscle is about 18% more dense than fat. If you gained 10 lbs. of muscle and at the same time you lost 10 lbs. of fat, you would be smaller in size. On the scale you’d weigh the same, but your trousers for example would be looser. Top 8 reasons why every woman should lift weights: 1. It increases your metabolism and BMR so that you are burning fat 24/7 2. You become empowered and more confident. This acquired strength carries over into many other areas of life and helps you to be successful 3. It enhances curves, sculpts and shapes your body by increasing muscle tissue 4. It reduces the risk of osteoporosis by increasing bone density 5. It is the most effective anti-aging activity that exists, creating a “Fountain of Youth” 6. It reduces the risk of many life-style related diseases and chronic illnesses 7. It Increases energy levels and improves mood through the release of brain-chemicals that reduce anxiety and depression 8. It raises the quality of life and well-being in countless areas such as sexuality, vitality, and relationships So give weight training a go and feel the benefits. Shape your mind and shape your body! Peas Please! It's definitely possible to start thinking of summery food in May. Everything is really starting to blossom and bloom and the weather is really getting going in the sunshine stakes. And I often think that a lot of the produce ready now is green! Peas, broad beans, lettuces, spring onions and watercress. All different shades with a wonderful vibrancy reminiscent of high summer. Many of these lovely green beauties mix and match really well creating beautiful marriages of flavour. And all these seasonal treats cook quickly too, so our everyday cooking will change from long and slow to fast and simple. Young broad beans and peas thrown in to a simple risotto with some good Parmesan is a wonderful supper. Eat with some punchy salad leaves simply dressed with balsamic and olive oil. Or why not whizz up a pesto with watercress, pine nuts, parmesan, lemon and garlic. Thin with a little olive oil and use as a dip, coat pasta or thickly spread over salmon then roast. All these wonderful things are here now, so let's get cooking. Why not try this really simple chicken dish for either a quick supper or perhaps even tart it up by serving it with some bubbly. To serve 4: Take an onion and peel and chop it. Heat a generous knob of butter in a wide, deep frying pan and add the onion and also a peeled crushed clove of garlic. Cook gently for 7-8 minutes. Pour in 50ml stock, 300ml double cream and the juice of half a lemon. Season generously. Next, slice 3 chicken fillets lengthways in to 4 and drop in to the sauce. Simmer for around 10 minutes. Add in 100g podded peas and cook for another 4-5 minutes. Check the seasoning and adjust if you need to, then serve with some rice or new potatoes and some more lovely greens.

Scriptwriter Nicola Harrison has collaborated with five worldclass musicians and a narrator to weave the music of Granados, de Falla, Rodrigo and other Spanish composers into a compelling and passionate tale. “It is evening and Jiraldo sits on the roof and watches the sun set over Seville. The air is heavy with the scent of jasmine, and bougainvillea trails over the walls, flecked with golden particles of dust that sparkle in the evening light. The murmurs of lovers rise up from the street, and the bright colours of girls’ dresses move like oblongs of life down the cobbled streets…” “Ravishing music, exciting rhythms and an untraditional approach.” Oxford Times

A NORWEGIAN TRAGEDY - Anders Behring Breivik and the Massacre of Utoya By Aage Borchgrevink What happened in Norway August of 2012, was a travesty of both human decency and moral behaviour. That a very sad, and utterly brainwashed, myopic fool, would endeavour to indiscriminately kill so many of his own countrymen. Anders Behring Breivik was so calculating and considered in doing so, surely beggars so much more. For one thing, it substantiates the issue of a certain philosophical chill factor of deeply ingrained, charitable understanding, having finally succumbed to an all time low. This highly meticulous study of one of Norway's darkest chapters, could, in a psychologically roundabout sort of way, just as easily have delved into the warped and diseased minds. In fact, Aage Borchgrevink's A Norwegian Tragedy - Anders Behring Breivik and the Massacre of Utoya, sheds a certain light on a subject that in all honesty, isn't exactly a hundred miles removed from that of so many modern-day murderers. Whether it's in the sky above New York, a railroad on the outskirts of Madrid, or a certain barracks in south London, is besides the point. As upon reading the following excerpt from Chapter Five's 'Morg the Graffiti Bomber - Anders Behring Beivik's Youth,' one will undoubtedly recognise the symptoms of crass and contagious stupidity: ''Anders Behring Breivik encountered another side of Oslo when he started at Ris Lower Secondary School in 1992, aged thirteen Hip-hop culture had arrived in Oslo in earnest, offering new opportunities to young people who previously would have been left out. The pig farmer's son was reborn as a hip gangster, and the girls saw him in a different light. Teenagers started turning up and loitering in the West End of Oslo, on the lookout for snobs to rob and girls to chat up. The immigrant boys were feared and mythologize this fear descended on the school-yards when the gangs came in from the suburbs. This had the strongest effect of all on the tagger's, who often allied themselves with what the Oslo rap group Karpe Diem called the West End ******* young people from minority backgrounds with links to the city's gangs. For them, respect is about inspiring fear and exercising power over others. When this type of respect becomes a social value for which young people compete, it is a recipe for conflict. The gangs derived their ethos from criminal cultures, even though they often referred to traditions from other home countries Sound familiar? This is just one instance of Borchgrevink's sublime investigation: an investigation that burrows much deeper, an investigation aligned with a focus one doesn't often come across. Unless of course, one's referring to the recent tidal wave of superfluous tittle tattle of the more thug 'n' gangland persuasion. None of which even come into the equation but for whatever reason, invariably and unfortunately do. It's hardly surprising therefore, that A Norwegian Tragedy received the Norwegian Critics' Award for 2012. Then again, this is the Norwegian writer, journalist and literary critic who has worked as an adviser to the Norwegian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights since 1933 Borchgrevink's fifth book. It really is as Avishai Margalit - Emeritus Professor at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote, Breivik's mass murder, coming of all places from Norway, shook the world. By a cool, clear and yet compassionate analysis, the book throws Northern bright light on the heart of darkness and succeeds in providing a rich context, which helps us partially understand this wretched act of irrationality. The last chapter tells us a great deal about hatred. It is something we should all know about. I couldn't agree more, it is indeed something we should all know about - even if it were to entail teaching right, from that of the potentially devastating wrong at school. If we are to at least try and avoid the following from the aforementioned fourteenth chapter hatred, it's surely worth considering. One of ' our own' had attacked us. Some people discussed the destructive effect of computer games, while others thought that extreme right-wing ideologies and anti-Islamic doomsday rhetoric were to blame, that the Internet and social media could radicalise people, turning them into monsters, or that there was a hidden class of hateful male losers in Norway. Were there invisible rifts in Norwegian society that could reopen and spit out the glowing red lava of hate again? It doesn't even bear worth thinking about - which is why Borchgrevink's book warrants to be embraced by sociologists and criminologists, not to mention all those who endeavour to subscribe to a better world.
