WHO’S NEXT?
Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Faringdon Business Breakfast Club On a chilly Spring morning there was an excellent turnout for our April meeting with nearly all the spaces at the tables taken, even if one or two of them were occupied by hares; more of that later. After our initial meet and greet activity where we welcomed one new member and welcomed back another who had not been able to come to recent meetings we sat down for our breakfast. During our 60 -second round we covered a wide spectrum of topics with a reminder that we had just entered a new tax year, nicely balanced by the need to gain clarity through stillness. We hear that a renowned wine expert will be visiting Faringdon in May and that there is always room to improve your digital image by getting your website updated. Our member speaker this month was Pauline Beesley whose talk was titled ‘Making Faringdon a Tourist Destination’. Pauline, a town counsellor, told us about the exciting Cotswold Hares initiative that is being extended to Faringdon. The project started in Cirencester several years ago and has created great interest there. We heard that the plan is to have three large hares on display one each at The Folly, the Market Place, and at the Tesco supermarket. These would be part of the Cotswold Hare Trail 2018 with more information on the overall programme available at www.cotswoldharetrail.org.uk. In addition to the large hares a number of smaller hares will be on display at various locations around the town. Maps with their locations will be available together with very small hares for children to paint or decorate themselves. The idea is to bring more tourists into Faringdon with the help of sponsorship by local businesses. At our next meeting on 14 May 2018, we will be hearing from one of our members, Sue Copeland about her interpretation of how to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You can book your place and why not bring a friend or colleague, just go to: https://fbbc-networking.co.uk/event/what-does-gdpr-mean-foryou/

Business Update
As you are probably aware, 2018 marks the 800th year of Faringdon’s Market Charter. There are plenty of events going on around the town to celebrate this landmark and it is great to see the enthusiasm with which the community is embracing and supporting these. Keep your eyes out for news on future events which are sure to attract more people from surrounding towns and counties to see what Faringdon has to offer. Indeed, tourism is what it’s all about right now. Have you noticed any hare statues popping up around town? This is part of one larger project which is looking to bring in more visitors; the “Cotswold Hare Trail”. Meanwhile the District Council is investing in a town economic development officer whose primary focus will be to develop more tourism locally. Hopefully they can build on the work the Town Team and Council have done and help promote Faringdon as a great tourist destination in the future. It is excellent to see the community taking an interest in the apparent decline of the town centre. This was sparked by a petition to our local councils entitled – “Make sure the Budgens site is used to benefit Faringdon”. Some fantastic ideas have been discussed already and hopefully some of these will be acted on. If you have any thoughts to add please contact the Town Team, town council or the Chamber of Commerce. A reminder for all businesses to check out the Vale4Business (V4B) website; there are many free events to help small and medium business people start up or develop their ventures. There have also been a number of “Elevate grants” awarded and more are available through the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (OxLEP). The closing date for applications is 31 May. Guidance and information is available on the V4B website. Finally, this Month sees us celebrate our annual Blackbird Day and our quirky Saturday market will once again be supporting the tradition.

By Winifred Watson This month’s column is a re-read, which is something that I do every now and again with books that made a significant impression the first time around and those that stand up to repeat readings. In this group are Atonement by Ian McEwan, most things by Sarah Waters (apart from The Little Stranger – that bit with the dog upset me too much), The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood, Love in a Cold Climate and The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford and entire swathes of Jackie Collins.
Celebrate The Royal Wedding With Us
Collins is my spirit animal, and the subject of a life-long love affair that first began when I read Hollywood Kids at the tender age of 14. I was captivated by love, loss and lashings of leopard print and I vowed way back then, that I would always live as fabulously as possible. The question ‘What Would Jackie Do?’ has served me well. But it’s none of these books that has been subject of a re-read this month, but a novel from 1938 that has a very similar message to ‘live fabulously’. Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day is a delightful confection that was extremely popular when it was first released in the 1930s, but unfortunately managed to slip into obscurity in the years after, along with the name of its author Winifred Watson. Watson and Miss Pettigrew were allowed to slide away from all awareness until they were rescued, thankfully, by the eagle-eyed publishers at Persephone Books, who arranged a re-issue in the year 2000. Watson was a well-to-do secretary who was challenged by one of her sisters (after complaining about the quality of fiction at the time) to come up with a novel of her own. She didn’t just come up with one, she had massive success with two books before Miss Pettigrew came along. Guinevere Pettigrew is a downtrodden governess who is almost on the poverty line when she is given a chance to work for an actress. I’m not giving away too much because I’d like you to read it.

It’s frothy, frivolous, daring and contains a valuable message to all of us to seize the day. It’s quite easily in my top five favourite books and reading it again has been as much of a delight as the first time. Miss Pettigrew Lives for the Day is available from Persephone Books persephonebooks.co.uk

Hello again, as another month flys nearer to the horizon! By now, we may have seen our first swallows as they fly overhead or heard the first cuckoo of Spring? Swifts will arrive very soon, I’m sure. Certainly butterflies, moths and bees have long been taking advantage of any warm sunshine. One orange-tailed bumblebee was checking out our Cattery and very indignant when easily captured and released outside, to the puzzlement of the collared dove, nesting on the security light near the main door, for her second year. With the great and vital importance of the UK and World bee populations, as well as all other pollinators, there’s a greater awareness in my profession now, I’m delighted to say. Last week, we had a web-based lecture (webinar) on the ravages caused by the very large Asian Hornet, which patrols bee hive landing strips and catches and kills the vulnerable worker bees as they prepare to deliver their hard-earned pollen. Many tips were given for us to share with local beekeepers. The Asian Hornets summer nests are very difficult too spot high up in UK treetops, but when found, are destroyed under DEFRA rules of engagement. This is an attempt by UK authorities to counter the huge threat from France, in particular, where the first hornet queen arrived in a Chinese porcelain shipment, only a few years ago. DO NOT attempt to destroy nests – only those trained professionals with full body protection will be allowed access to carry out their work. Very rarely will these hornets present a significant threat to people and pets. The comprehensive UK ivory ban has been announced by the Government – “the toughest in the World”. The proposal announced by Michael Gove will cover ivory items of all ages, closing the current antique ivory loophole that’s allowed huge amounts of ivory to be exported from the UK to Asia. And the Government has taken IFAW’s advice and included a few very tightly defined exemptions for things like musical instruments and trade between museums, which aren’t linked to elephants being poached. Both the IFAW and Space for Giants have issued statements in early April. This is fantastic news for many reasons. All ivory markets must close. Legal markets provide cover for illegal markets, and any legal trade confuses people and raises questions over what ivory can be bought, and what cannot. It's in that confusion that the illegal trade flourishes, sentencing thousands of elephants a year to an excruciating death, enriching international criminals, and robbing Africa's economies and people of assets and livelihoods. In short: all trade must be ended. Unlimited fines or five years in prison await those found guilty of breaching the ban. By one account, from the respected Environmental Investigation Agency, Britain was the world's largest exporter of ivory between 2010 and 2015. Closing its markets therefore brings it in line with China, Hong Kong, and the US - other major former ivory traders and again sends the powerful message that globally there is simply no demand for ivory any more. With no demand, there'll be no supply. However, the European Union continues to permit ivory sales. At the recent Giants Club Summit, the presidents of Botswana, Gabon, and Uganda, the Environment Cabinet Secretary of Kenya, and representatives of 29 other African governments, all signed a petition drawn up by Avaaz that called for the EU to close its ivory market. The UK's move now adds even more pressure on Brussels to act. Avaaz is a U.S.-based online site launched in January 2007 that promotes global activism on issues such as climate change, human rights, animal rights, corruption, poverty, and conflict, founded in January 2007. More local to home is a campaign supported by our RSPB to celebrate Oxford as a City of Swifts. From the RSPB: “Superb flyers, quintessentially urban and a symbol of the British summer, swifts are also in serious decline. Oxford has been home to many generations of swifts over the years and we would like your help to keep it that way. The Oxford Swift City project aims to improve the outlook for swifts in Oxford. There are many ways that you can help these vulnerable birds. How about getting creative and celebrating swifts with some art in our competition? perhaps you can undertake a swift survey in your area? One little point to end with, is to reassure everyone who has been misinformed by the local veterinary grapevine that we have “sold out” and that I’m “retiring”. I can officially reveal that I have, after 24 years in my own Practice in the Village, joined a very caring group of practices called VetPartners. The only effect on you, my loyal clients, is an acceleration in the provision of extra services offered and longer appointment opportunities. I will continue the habit of a lifetime and continue to practice the art and science of modern veterinary medicine and surgery, by keeping myself up to date as I always do and enjoying working within our very caring Team, with our great clients and pets. It’s a real privilege to continue to look after your family’s special companions. So, with much less admin on my shoulders, I now look forward even more, to meeting up again with you next month. Have a great May-time. Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

Oxfordshire Artweeks 2018 In and around Faringdon this May, more than 30 artists and designer makers welcome you for Oxfordshire Artweeks, the county’s art festival (from 5th-28th May and 19th-28th here in Faringdon) during which artists showcase their creativity, talents and eye-catching art and crafts from local landscapes to designs with a difference: there’s everything from paintings and photography to jewellery, and furniture making. Artist David Bage is exhibiting in Marriots in the Market Place with strong colourful paintings inspired by past masters in various ways or head to Great Coxwell for their ever popular series of art spaces, whilst Longcot is a hotbed of stone carving and there are ceramics little and large in Shellingford. To see something new this Artweeks, in Pusey a new group of artists are showing delicate jewellery inspired by the sea, bold bowls and eye-catching paintings in a countryside barn in a wonderful spot beyond a gypsy caravan! Or head for Bishopstone to see new artist Usham Sargeant’s award-winning felted textile pictures. And over in Stanford, Faringdon artist Richard Rodrigues joins other artists with his intriguing abstract representations of the colourful places he has travelled. Be intrigued and inspired by the past and the present, local people, places and passions, and find a treasure to take home with you. See more at www.artweeks.org or pick up a festival guide in local shops and venues.

Best known for his watercolours of the Mediterranean he is continuing his Mediterranean Odyssey with paintings of Elba and Sicily, he will also be showing some oils and other new works. Damp! Discovering that the home you are selling or buying has damp does not necessarily mean that the property has a structural defect. The word ‘damp’ in residential property terms tends to cover three main types namely: 1. 2. 3.
Rising Damp. Penetrating Damp. Condensation.
Rising Damp Typically, however not exclusively, rising damp is more associated with older properties. The tell tale signs are normally damp skirting boards, flaking paint or plaster and a watermark. Black spot mould is not typically present and if it is, it is likely to be one of the other kinds of damp. A DPC, be it a membrane or chemical injection, is very effective at preventing rising damp. It is unusual for a DPC to be damaged and therefore, when there is a diagnosis of rising damp and a DPC is present, it is worth asking the following questions: 1. Has the DPC been bridged? i.e. if there something providing a link from the ground and going above the DPC? 2. How high are the external ground levels? 3. Could any cavity wall insulation be compromising the DPC? Answering the first two questions is relatively easy and can be done with a physical walk around the external walls.
Drain pipes, plants, and trellis work can all potentially bridge a DPC and current building regulations recommend at least 15 cms between the DPC and the ground. Penetrative Damp Penetrating damp is caused by water leaking through walls. This type of damp may expand across walls or ceilings and typically will move horizontally, rather than by travelling up walls (as is the case with rising damp). Penetrating damp is usually caused by structural problems in a building. Things like faulty guttering or drain pipes, damaged roofing, cracks in the walls, damaged chimneys or windows can all provide ways of water entering the property. Condensation Condensation is the most common kind of damp. It is caused by moist air condensing on walls, particularly in rooms with a lot of air moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms. It's mainly, but not always, a winter problem, as the walls are much colder than the air inside. Issues around condensation are usually alleviated with improved ventilation. Problems can occur with older properties, which were typically built to ‘breath’ and dampness would just naturally evaporate out of the property. Applying modern building standards to these older properties can mean that the natural circulation of air is halted or concentrated in certain areas. Closing up chimneys and installing double-glazing may provide warmth but they can also lead to reduced air circulation. We deal with all types of property on a daily basis and know that damp does not have to be a showstopper, however, it is worth getting further professional advice. For all things property, why not drop in to our office in Faringdon for a coffee and a chat. Jenny Preece

The Positive Pigeon Project The Positive Pigeon Project is our next Community Art project to coincide with the Folly Fest 2018 27th-29th July We want everyone to make an origami paper pigeon which will be displayed in the Corn Exchange and The Folly Tower, after which the pigeons will be given as gifts to visitors to Faringdon via The Tourist Information Office and The Folly Tower. This is a positive affirmation of thanks from the people of Faringdon to visitors to the town. Get involved by making a pigeon or helping with the display. If you can fold a piece of paper, then you can make a pigeon. Instructions on how to make a pigeon, paper templates and further information can be found on The Positive Pigeon Project page on the website www.thepumphouseproject.co.uk Or maybe you would like to help with creating the display or working with the local groups to ensure as many people as possible get to make one. How is your summer body coming along? We know from our previous articles that improving the quality of our food is a proven, effective way to achieve long term benefits to our weight, health and vitality. It’s easy to achieve as well! We also know that exercising regularly has massive benefits, but is it easier said than done? We often let life get in the way, preventing us from going in the first place or continuing a regular regime. Exercise must become part of your life to see the benefits, so why is it so difficult? How do we even get started? Then when we are in a routine how do we stick with it? ● Understand your motivation ● Set realistic goals (and rewards!) ● Create a support network If you nail down your true reason this will keep you motivated. One piece of advice I would recommend is to know your real reason for starting on your regime. ● Did someone comment on your weight? ● Do you not like what you see in the mirror? ● Have you been invited to a special event? ● Have you been advised to improve your health by the doctor? Whatever you decide to do, choose something you enjoy – if you don’t enjoy it you won’t stick to it. Set realistic, achievable targets ● Put exercise time slots in your diary that you can keep ● Have a back-up plan just in case you have to change your routine ● Write down an exercise program so you know what you are doing each day ● Reward yourself when you’ve reached a goal! Preparation is everything – planning ahead will help you keep on track ● Be prepared to start off slowly! ● Be prepared to change your behaviour ● Be prepared to make mistakes – and learn from them

Mellors Mot and Garage Ltd Drive Well For Less
Free Pick Up & Delivery To All Wantage & Surrounding Villages One Night Only – Aussie Wine Producer in Faringdon! Working in the wine industry means that you have the wonderful opportunity to meet some interesting characters. Bob Berton of Berton Vineyards is no exception. I met Bob in Den Boer’s early days, being a fellow Aussie, we shared a mutual interest in the Australian wine regions. Bob’s story is one of those ‘escape to the country’ adventures. In 1996, Bob and his wife Cherie ‘up sticks’, took the kids out of school and relocated after purchasing a block of land in High Eden, a sub-region of the Barossa Valley, South Australia. They bought a caravan and lived in that whilst they had their house built and set about planting the first Berton Vineyard cuttings that spring; ten acres of Shiraz and seven acres of Chardonnay - without any permanent water. It wasn't until the following year, in 1998 when the dam filled that the vines got a decent drink!! It was due to these conditions and the seemingly hydrophobic podsolic soils that the vines struggled to become established. After a few years where the vines still looked like rootlings, a Swedish friend jokingly called it the ‘Bonsai Vineyard’. The name stuck and later became the name of their premium Shiraz. High Eden has a high annual rainfall so the vines are looking good these days... but they still remember the early days every time they crack open a bottle of Bonsai! After the dam was established and water plentiful they went on to plant Cabernet sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. I was fortunate enough to visit this property in Eden Valley a few years ago. The dam and vineyards provide the perfect backdrop to the setting sun. There was also a couple of locals (kangaroos) spotted amongst the vineyards! If you’d like to hear more about Bob and Berton Vineyards, (the next chapter), I am pleased to announce that he has Faringdon firmly planted on his UK Visit itinerary. Bob will be presenting a tasting with an Aussie Style (no…not just BBQ – Paul at Sadlers has got a ‘ripper’ menu in store!) four course meal on Thursday, 10th May 7.30pm at Sadlers, Market Square, Faringdon £32.50pp. Bookings essential: E: denboerwines@hotmail.com or M: 07919 241881

Successful Newbies! Running, Friendships & Weight loss. Slimming Worlds Amazing Champions! Jo Groves, Gill Lewington, Louise Preece (consultant), Billy Bonson, Joyce Hammond, Lindsay Long and Sidney the dog. A group of Faringdon Slimming World members have recently completed a 5k run to raise over £500 for Breast cancer. The previous non-runners decided to push themselves to not only improve their health by losing a whooping total of 150 lbs between them, but to improve their fitness by challenging each other to complete a 5k charity run. Since joining the Faringdon group, the members have come together to support and encourage each other, also making new friendships along the way. Meeting regularly at the Wednesday Slimming World group at the Faringdon United Church and also throughout the week to continue and improve their fitness. Most of them would never have contemplated entering a run, let alone completing one and are all feeling very proud of their achievements. Louise the consultant who runs with them said, she's so proud of how well they have done with their weight losses, their running and the friendships made.
We offer government funded Nursery places to some 2 year olds, as well as 3 and 4 year olds For more information, contact Stephanie Chapman
