Faringdon Let Us Not Forget Armistice Day Sunday 11th Nov18 At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. A Two Minute Silence is observed, the day marks the end of the First World War. Remember those who have died for us!

Faringdon & District Branch of the Royal British Legion Are very proud to present their 8th ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF REMEMBRANCE. The Festival will he held in the Corn Exchange, Faringdon, on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9th 2018, commencing at 7.30pm. Programme includes the Thames Valley Police Choir, other music and readings, commemorating the 100-years since the end of the First World War in 1918. Tickets are £6.00 each and available from the Faringdon Tourist Information Centre, Market Place, Faringdon.

War Memorial Trust Remembrance Exhibition The War Memorial Trust and the Royal British Legion will be holding its tenth exhibition of war time memorabilia in the Old Town Hall to reflect on the impact that wars have made on local families. This year marks the centenary of the end of the first World War, ‘the war to end all wars’ and the overlooked battles of 1918 that cost the lives of many local men. If you have any memorabilia, particularly photographs, letters, postcards and stories, that you would like to share, not just of WW1 but of any conflicts with which your family members were involved, please bring them to the Faringdon Town Council offices (in the Pump Rooms on the Market Place) before Wednesday, 7th November; the office is open between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. We would be particularly interested in stories and memorabilia involving local women and their role in WW1 and how the war affected families on the ‘home front’. Any precious items that you may think to be too valuable to exhibit can be photocopied and the Trust will take care to return original items to their owners. The exhibition will be open to the public from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th November, and after the Remembrance Day ceremony on Sunday 11th until 1:30 pm. Volunteers who would like to help in manning the exhibition should contact the Faringdon Town Council Offices on 01367 240281.

Roberts Ramblings!

| The Advertiser | page 7 |

Hello and welcome to another ramble, wearing waterproofs hopefully, this time, as rain and wind see to tree leaf stripping. The fish in the pond seem happy anyway! Blackberries still seem fit for the dogs, as I reach higher ones while they pull the soft, probably beery berries off the lower stems. Dropped apples are now too soft and a wasp-danger when the weather was a brief Indian Summer. Winter migrant birds are already here and looking at those sample apples, all the bright red hawthorns, but the native blackbirds and thrushes have managed to enjoy the elderberries first this year. This is also a time of year where burrs from the wide, tall burdock plant are ready to attach themselves to our clothing and to any animal that brushes past them. Legend has it that the Swiss inventor of Velcro got the idea from the hook and loop burdock seed system. These hooks can cause a very intense, potentially very painful and serious foreign body reaction to any animal grooming away burrs, which can get embedded in tongue and gum. Affected dogs at the very least have small raised red marks on the tongue tip and edges. Presenting signs of “Burr Tongue” include bleeding, dribbling and dysphagia (food and water). Any owner is strongly advised to seek veterinary help if symptoms like this are noted, even if a false alarm, as earlier help will be much appreciated by your pet. To avoid the issue as best possible, feel your dog or horse’s coat for burrs and remove them immediately with a comb. Perhaps do this after each walk or ramble if longer-coated. Our pets must be so stoical when it comes to such problems and with dental infections. For anyone experiencing mouth abscesses, gum infections and such like, the pain, lethargy and discomfort must be intense – so regular check-ups at home and at your surgery are really essential for your pet’s welfare. The same though comes to mind with pets and significant arthritis issues. I strongly believe in saying that dismissing disability as “just getting old” is no substitute for joint support, veterinary attention and complementary therapies like chiropractic, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, laser treatment and acupuncture. How do we really know what they feel? How can we compare what it was like for us to be a “Spring chicken”, then one day to hesitate in climbing that hillside with a pet who has some memory of course but who generally lives from day to day. Scientific, expertly-researched medical articles like this are available : “arthritis leads to a higher risk of anxiety”; “Depression tied to arthritis pain”; “More adults with arthritis should receive exercise counselling”….but, to counter that, can I add this one: “More evidence links Mediterranean diet to less depression”. Who knows (I’m sure someone does!) whether that same diet reduces the incidence and severity of arthritis, through weight and joint care? I read such articles, absorb online webinars in the wider medical and veterinary world to broaden my perspectives and challenge my knowledge and concepts for treatment. One real privilege and source of pride, in that 41 years on after qualifying from the RVC as a Veterinary Surgeon, I take real interest in learning and seeing new things and sharing my knowledge with my clients. I know that I’m not alone in this by a long way! So here to close, on a very wet day, is a poem from Ogden Nash, which for many of us will be very true, get those towels ready! The Dog. The truth I do not stretch or shove, When I state that the dog is full of love, I’ve also found, by actual test, A very wet dog is the loving est! It’s that time of year again when our thoughts turn to what to buy for our whisky loving friends and family, and whether our own drinks cupboard needs topping up ready for the festive season. With this in mind, I thought it would be helpful to look at a few of the newer whiskies that have proved popular this year that might help you to make your selection. First off is a whisky that arrived with us just before Christmas last year - the Cotswolds whisky. This new kid on the block that hails from Warwickshire (our home county) was eagerly anticipated and did not disappoint. Although undeniably still very much a youngster the well made spirit has benefited from maturation in both ex-bourbon and red wine casks, producing a character-full, fruity and spicy malt that has turned out to be one of our consistently top selling whiskies. Another popular whisky has been the Borders grain whisky, brought out by R&B Distillers to represent the style of whisky they had intended to produce in a new distillery in the Scottish Borders (although latest news is that the project is on indefinite hold). Like Lowland whisky, grain whisky tends to be lighter and sweeter and, unusually, this one includes a high proportion of malted barley (50%) whilst the rest of the grain used is wheat. The spirit starts life in a bourbon cask and is then finished in an Oloroso cask, which adds dried fruits and a certain nuttiness to the vanilla, herbal and floral flavours in this surprisingly complex whisky. Next is Glenallachie 12 year old, from a distillery not known for its single malts until that magician Billy Walker took it on and started to showcase just what we’d been missing out on! A company ethos of ‘Make great whisky, enjoy life’ combined with Billy’s unerring eye for selecting just the right casks have led to the release of an interesting range of malts. Matured in PX, Oloroso and virgin oak casks, the 12 year old is well summed up in the producer’s own words as tasting of ‘honey, marzipan and bananas, with lashings of butterscotch, raisins and a delicate hint of mocha’, and this is one that will appeal to those who like a sherried malt. Finally, the BenRiach 21 year old falls into a slightly higher price bracket than the 3 whiskies above but, for me, is well worth the money. It was the first whisky to be created by BenRiach’s new master blender, Rachel Barrie, and was matured in a combination of four different cask types. On the nose I got red fruits/berries and cream soda, and when I tasted it the flavours of fruits, barley sugar, lemon, and a trace of chocolate just danced through my mouth. This is a Grand Cru whisky! Next month we’ll turn our attention to the smokier side of the whisky spectrum. Fran Thomas

Sheryl Louise Yoga, teaches Slow Hatha Yoga classes, Restorative Practices and Workshops (with Nicola Tew) on ‘Understanding Ourselves Through the Lens of the Chakras’ at The Lotus Retreat in Faringdon. How do you feel whole, when it feels like your life is in fragments? Life sometimes feels so fast, almost like we’re on a conveyor belt, unable to stop, to pause and to step off. The only option is to keep moving forward, regardless of if it feels like we’re somehow on the wrong conveyor belt. This was what my life used to feel like. My conveyor belt came to a grinding holt, through sickness, anxiety and depression time and time again. Patching myself up, making quick fixes and finding distractions. Plastering a big smile on my face and pretending everything was OK. But it wasn’t and the question I kept asking myself was ‘am I on the wrong conveyor belt’? Like there was somehow something wrong with me, something that needed fixing. So, do we need fixing? Are we broken? I don’t believe we are, yoga teaches us that we are WHOLE. But how do you feel whole, when you feel like your life is in fragments? It begins by slowing down, by pausing and spending time with ourselves. Time without thought or judgement. It’s in that interoceptive space that we can develop a sense of awareness and see beyond the thoughts in our heads. Slow Hatha Yoga and Restorative practices are one way we can learn how to slow down, pause and develop this awareness. They are practices suitable for all abilities. I call them practices as that is exactly what they are. The Yoga Sutras – 1:2 describe Yoga as ‘Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind’ and this to me is what yoga is truly about. It is so much more than an exercise regime. You don’t need to be flexible or fit, you just need to be willing to spend time with yourself. To spend time in that pause watching and observing. So, no, I wasn’t on the wrong conveyor belt. This conveyor belt is my life and each event, wave of anxiety and depression that I’ve met along the way has bought me to where I am today. For that I am truly grateful, and I would not change a single thing. Life is about living, loving and learning! Taking a pause and taking time to be with yourself, without thought or judgement can have life changing results – I am the proof of that! If you’d like to join me for some Slow Hatha Yoga, please email sheryllouiseyoga@gmail.com or visit www.sherylouiseyoga.com all my classes are suitable for beginners & beyond. www.thelotusretreat.com 2 London Street . Faringdon Bell Ringers Sombre bells sound in hope for the future You may have heard sombre bells occasionally over the past few weeks, sounding ghostly but still within hearing. We are training our learners on "silent bells". Silent bells are muffled by leather on each side of the clapper, which softens the sound from when the clapper hits each side of the bell. These practice sessions are on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings and form this basis of future ringing in Faringdon. We have to tell of our trip to the Oxfordshire Guild 6-bell striking competition, when Faringdon Tower represented the Vale of White Horse. Having competed but never won before, we were not surprised that another band won and went through to the national competition. On their return home, we thanked the six ringers for their bravery in competing "away". Indeed, we all know how conducive are Faringdon's bells to good striking and are always glad to ring at our home tower. On the 11 November, we will be ringing on half-muffled bells in the evening as part of Ringing for Peace, which is dedicated to ringing a message of peace on this most important day. Our half-muffled bells will sound as a sombre symbol of going into the future wanting to prevent the terrible things that happened before. If you are interested in learning how to ring full-circle bells, you can drop into our Sunday service ringing (9.45–10.30 am) or Monday practice (7.30–9.00 pm) at Faringdon's church bell tower. Healthy Living!

| The Advertiser | page 16 |

The Benefits Of Movement Our bodies are designed to move. Moving forwards, sideways, up, down, twisting, rotating and bending are all movements that enable us to live a normal life. Until this ability is compromised, often due to injury, disease or age, we often take our basic daily body movements for granted. Even when we’re healthy, if we spend a lot of time sitting - in the car, at the office, at home - the lack of movement can lead to a more restricted range of motion in our joints. We can experience general stiffness, joint weakness or lowered strength. There are several benefits associated with moving regularly, stronger muscles, better flexibility, improved balance lightened mood. When we are sedentary, sluggish or unable to move we can develop a number of issues, reduction in bone mass, poor circulation, slow movement of food through the intestines, a less efficient immune system and deterioration of mood. I work with people who want to make change, because they want to feel better, look better, lose weight and improve their self- confidence. Not many say they just want to move better, however I often meet individuals who struggle to exercise because of aches and pains, often in their joints. When done correctly exercise can reduce pain. Appropriate regular exercise, how gentle or vigorous depends on the individual, helps to lubricate the joints and ease pain and stiffness. Increased flexibility and muscle strength will bring with them improved balance and co-ordination. By encouraging my clients to move more they benefit from increased energy, fewer aches and pains and greater feelings of wellbeing. Stretching is a great way to improve your flexibility and enhance your ability to move. Light walking, jogging and moving your major muscle groups before intense exercise will improve your recovery, and stretching after exercise will lengthen your muscles and reduce stiffness. Beginning your activity slowly and gently, and only building speed and intensity when you are warmed up and ready, will increase your flexibility and lower your risk of injury. ‘People who are inactive are more likely to be obese, eat poorly or face other lifestyle or metabolic issues’. Keep your body moving – it’s good for you. Rich Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com

Let’s talk about Wine!

| The Advertiser | page 19 |

Favourite wines for the UK!

For November, I would like to introduce the number 2 most popular red and white wines in the UK. These are Shiraz and Chardonnay. Both grapes grow in many countries around the world, so you get lots of choice and many different styles of wine - all from the same grape. When you see Shiraz, the first thing to remember is it is also called Syrah. Two names for the same grape. Shiraz in Europe comes from the warmer areas around the Mediterranean. They tend to have strong black fruits and berry flavours. They are also dark in colour and often have a spicy or peppery flavour. In Australia, Shiraz became the most common wine and had strong flavours, packing a big taste. Over the years, Australian winemakers have toned down the flavours to make a more subtle set of flavours, more in line with the European versions. The reds from South America up to California can sometimes be bulk manufactured and lacking the good flavours of the Australian version, like all wines, you get good producers and average ones. Chardonnay is white wine that also has strong links with Australia and the Americas. For many years it was produced in oak barrels, which gave a specific flavour to the wine, sometimes smothering the fruit flavours. But the rise of more fruity wines like Sauvignon blanc caused the winemakers to change tack. Most Chardonnay now spend less time in an oak barrel, some none at all, so that the delicate fruit flavours of lemon and tart apple plus some peach or pineapple will come through. The fruity version of Chardonnay is a dry white, sometimes called crisp. It taste best when served chilled to around 12C. Please note that your fridge will be typically at 5C, so if you take it out 15 - 20 minutes before you want to drink it, it will come closer to the right temperature. Try it at different temperatures and you should notice the difference. For those who don’t know, Chablis is actually a chardonnay wine. This small area produces some very nice wines, unfortunately with prices to match. Surrounding the official chablis area is the Petit Chablis, so you get wine made in the same style, just not from the best vineyards. A similar flavour can be found in the Burgundy region, where most white wines are Chardonnay. As you explore these lovely wines, you will find the ones that you like best. They are available in all supermarkets and specialist shops as well. They come in all price bands as well depending on your budget. Bearing in mind that Christmas is coming, then both wines go well with turkey, so it will be a good idea to find one that you like. Next month I will have some recommendations for wines for the festive season, so please enjoy your wines and cheers till next month. Ian Lloyd
