Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Faringdon Business Breakfast Club It was a strong turnout for our October meeting held in The Bell. Our guest speaker was Bob Hopgood the owner of Second-2-None. Bob’s talk generated a lot of interest as he told us how he had built his highly successful business over the past 16 years. Despite his initial desire to set up in Abingdon he has now established Second-2-None as one of the leading independent garages in the region and regularly attracts the attention of well-known garage brands interested in purchasing his business. Bob described the values he places on keeping his customers happy and the service levels that he delivers in order to retain them. He also talked about the challenges of training his mechanics and apprenticeship schemes. Second-2-None support Faringdon Football Club by providing continued sponsorship for the current under-9 team through until they reach the under-14 level. His talk generated some interesting questions and potentially a couple of new customers for him as well. During the 60-second round we heard how those attending could provide goods and services for each other and hopefully resulted in a number of meetings planned to discuss potential opportunities for working together. Thanks to Mary Thomas who produced a questionnaire for everyone to complete in order to see how we can best make the most of our meetings in the future. The questionnaire will be sent out electronically to ensure that those that were not able to attend also have the opportunity to put forward their views.

Business Update

Another REFERENDUM; it’s voting time again. Whilst we learn what “Brexit” might mean to us, we now have one closer to home. Since 2012, the Town Council, in consultation with Faringdon residents and various bodies, have drawn up a plan that will shape the development of our town up to 2031. It has undergone much scrutiny and amendment, the most notable being the preservation of Humpty Hill as open space. On 24th November you will be asked to cast your vote to the question – “Do you want the Vale of White Horse District Council (the local planning authority) to use the Neighbourhood Plan for the parish of Great Faringdon to help decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?” A copy of the Faringdon Neighbourhood Plan can be found at the Pump House or on line. Last month the Vale and an external consultancy firm engaged with local businesses to gather vital information on the strengths, weaknesses and requirements to maintain and improve the economic vitality of the town. This study is ongoing and will culminate in a report for an Economic Development Strategy for the district. It was great to see the newly incorporated Faringdon Business Group represented at this event. Later this month there will be a workshop to initiate the production of a “business plan” for Faringdon. This initial forum will be open to anyone who has an interest in the town and its future. A date and location will be publicised shortly. Anyone looking to start a new business in the area and needing guidance or advice should contact the Chamber of Commerce who can direct you to the various organisations that are available to assist with the key aspects of starting up or running a business. Most offer free advice, support or mentors and reduce the fear and apprehension of the early steps we all faced.

0 0 0 1 Thoughts are turning to Christmas, and if you’re compiling your present list for whisky loving friends and family then ideally you’ll have done a bit of homework and have an idea of the style of whisky they like, with the most important question being whether or not they like peaty whiskies – as, like marmite, you either love or hate a smoky dram. So, armed with that knowledge, here’s a few suggestions of what might go down well with the whisky fan in your life, including maybe, yourself?… Nomad blended whisky is initially aged in Scotland and then travels to the Gonzalez Byass Bodega in Spain to finish maturing in PX casks, hence ‘Nomad’. This smooth, elegant whisky has proved very popular with its flavoursome taste of raisins, honey hints of vanilla and dried fruits. The art of the blender shines through; not surprisingly as it was created by Richard Paterson, fifty years in the business and one of the best. Compass Box Enlightment is also a whisky with a story. It is a blend of malts from Clynelish, Glentauchers, Balblair and Mortlach, and was created by John Glaser to highlight the CB campaign to abolish the EU and UK rules that forbid revealing the age of all the component whiskies in a blend. With its soft spice, citrus and orchard fruits this whisky is both rebellious and delicious! Tullamore Dew 18 is one of Ken’s favourites of this year. This Irish single malt whiskey has been matured in a mixture of Oloroso Sherry, Port, Madeira and Bourbon casks; a combination which produces a delightful melange of exotic fruit, vanilla sweetness, buttery notes, chocolate, and a dash of citrus and fruitcake. For a really seasonal touch, and an extra special treat, you can’t go far wrong with the BenRiach 17 year old Pedro Ximenez Finish single malt. Maturation initially in American bourbon barrels then in Pedro Ximenez sherry butts for a period of ‘finishing’ gives this whisky luscious flavours of dark chocolate, dates and figs along with gentle spices, fruit, nuts and marzipan – perfect at this time of year. For those who like some peatiness in their dram then an excellent new release this year was Ailsa Bay. This, most unusually, peated Lowland single malt whisky has wonderful smells of smoky bacon along with a touch of honey and cereals. These translate to bacon and maple syrup on the palate, along with plenty of smoke and some fresher, lemon and eucalyptus notes. Delightful! Finally, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the yearly Big Peat release and for 2016 this cask strength offering is a vatting of all the active distilleries on Islay plus the legendary closed distillery, Port Ellen. We haven’t been able to try it yet but the producers describe it as having ‘notes of ash, sweet tar, smoking chimneys and a subtle salty beach quality’. Islay in a bottle!

Esther The Wonder Pig Changing The World One Heart At A Time By Steve Jenkins & Deric Walter with Caprice Crane

‘Funny, moving and heartwarming. The greatest love story ever told between two men and their pig’ – Ricky Gervais We’ve all bought something that’s turned out to be not quite as it was pitched on the tin. Now imagine if that something was a 48 stone pig that changed the way you viewed everything that happened in life. That’s what happened to Ontario, Canada-based Steve Jenkins and his partner Derek Walter and their ‘micro-pig’ Esther. An animal lover from an early age, Steve relates how he took the tiny creature from an ex-girlfriend who claimed she couldn’t take care of the pig anymore. The lady in question assured Steve that the piglet would grow to no bigger than 70Ibs (5 stone). But Esther – as the piglet was named – never stopped growing. So begins the adventure of a lifetime, with as many trials and tribulations as highs. Steve tells of nightmare toilet-training scenarios (yep – as bad as you can imagine), parental schisms, and the strain on the relationship between Derek and himself. But slowly and surely the power of Esther began to manifest in wonderful ways. Both men questioned how their intelligent pet could also be someone else’s food. So they took up a vegan lifestyle (there’s a vegan recipe section at the back of the book), and through their extensive social network presence began to advocate for a more harmonious and compassionate lifestyle for all animals. Having outgrown the home they shared with Esther, two dogs and a cat named Dolores, Steve and Derek were able to harness the goodwill of the international Esther-loving community to crowd-fund their own animal sanctuary Happily Ever Esther. The sanctuary in Ontario is now home to a range of animals from cows and goats to chickens and geese. Esther is a character, as anyone who follows her social media accounts can attest to, and in the book both men come across as likeable and genuine. Caprice Crane, who helped with the writing, feeds in a lot of personality and the book never sags, drags or gets too heavy even when Steve is relating heartbreaking facts and scenarios. Highly recommended for animal lovers, and for people who worry that there are no longer good people in the world.

November Ramblings!

| The Advertiser | page 9 |

With the first significant frost on the grass and plumes of cobwebs revealed by the frozen water droplets along apple and berry filled hedgerows, the sun shines brightly on our frosted sheep backs as they eat the fallen apples. Today, as I write, the welcome sun is shining across the countryside; no doubt also on the famous Skeldale House, made famous by the BBC series “All Creatures Great and Small”, in Askrigg, North Yorkshire. Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mr Alf Wight, MRCVS, (pen name James Herriot) who wrote the Herriot book series. The BBC series was first screened on 8th January 1978, reaching its conclusion 90 episodes later, on the 24th December 1990. The stone-built Skeldale House is now a luxury B & B. The Welsh actor Christopher Timothy who was out of work at the time, was asked by the BBC producer, Bill Sellars, who was tasked with getting the series off the ground, to play the role of James Herriot, he accepted the role without hesitation. Can you believe, the main actors in the 1975 film “It shouldn’t happen to a Vet” passed on this opportunity! In the TV series, the cantankerous and eccentric Siegfried Farnon, played by Robert Hardy, was based on Mr Wight’s real life partner, Donald Sinclair. Mr Alf Wight, wrote to Christopher Timothy in 2003, and was quoted as saying: "You are the Herriot I wrote about". Christopher Timothy (TV James Herriot) said ”I felt quite honoured when some Welsh and later, English, farmers called me Mr Herriot, an easy mistake to make with my surname but a very hard act to follow” They told me that they too were watching the programmes! The actual and original “Herriot practice”, now called the Skeldale Veterinary Centre is very much carrying on the Herriot tradition and the range of animals treated, as well as the James Herriot Museum are based in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. The Museum is fascinating; even has the original Austin 7, well worth a visit! In Wales at that time, as in Yorkshire, the farmers used to swear by the blue solution and that it was far better than the red one. This was real medical magic and a clinically-sound mystery! Many times, simple actions work and Nature heals, given time and opportunity. Mr Wight’s passions were working with cows and his dogs. He never forgot his growing family, taking them outdoors on trips to special areas that he had himself discovered. I understand that Mr Wight’s daughter trained as a doctor at the time that her older brother was practicing as a veterinary surgeon, like his father! I have always had a great personal respect and love for Mr Wight’s daily work and his way of working with town and village people, as well as the great farming characters in the area. I greatly respect his way of working, his ethos and his ability to know people and ease, the history of the case comfortably out of them. I’m sure that you join me in at least having read some, if not all like me, of these wonderful books! Yes, I too watched the series and met my future wife in Brecon, at the start of them. I’ve moved sideways into rare breed Welsh sheep now; no cattle at all, plenty of rescue Labradors Retrievers and now cats. Oh, and not forgetting my grandchildren!! It is the perfect time of year for a fruity harvest. We have had a warm summer and a sunny, balmy autumn. Brilliant for ripening, and to this end, I've had wonderful offers of apples and plums from all sorts of wonderful occupants of the town. Fabulous Faringdon seems to be awash with not only apples, plums and pears but quince too and seemingly later than I have remembered in past years. It's fabulous to have, so many of this ancient fruit in our gardens. Every time I look at and inhale the sweet aroma, I get transported back a few hundred years to times gone by when food was perhaps more opulent and special. The qualities to love are many. The sweet perfume from a bowl of quince is unrivalled and the pink hue the flesh takes on in cooking is eye catching and rich. It's interesting to watch the change if you are cooking your quince in a pan. Part of the apple and pear family, the quince sadly can not be eaten raw. It is far too bitter. But once cooked, its transformation is stunning, leaving us with little doubt it was all worth the effort. It holds plenty of pectin too, which is why it is more often than not used to make a jelly, or membrillo in Spain, classically eaten with manchego cheese. But if you don't want the bother with all of the kerfuffle of chutney or jelly, you can simply poach peeled and cored quince halves in a syrup along with a few winter spices like star anise and cinnamon, served at room temperature with your cheeses. Meat and quince pair very well, particularly game. In middle eastern countries they are often found nestling next to each other in an ingredient list. So why not try this venison dish to serve 4. Start by poaching the quince. Dissolve 50g sugar in 500ml water adding a star anise if you have one, a strip of lemon peel and maybe a cinnamon stick. Peel and quarter 2 quince then poach in the syrup for 10-15 minutes or until tender. Bring the quince out then sit on to a little paper towel to dry them. Next, make a red wine sauce. Take around 500ml red wine and place into a wide frying pan if you have one or a saucepan if not! Bubble until reduced by half then add 200ml stock and a little salt and black pepper and then bubble again for 5 minutes. Add 4tbs red currant jelly, letting it dissolve. Bubble the sauce for a few more minutes until syrupy. Lastly, take 4 lovely portions of venison steak. Season it, then pan fry according to your taste. It depends on the size of the pieces but the boys in the butchers will advise you I expect! Remove the venison and whilst it is resting, in the same pan fry your quince pieces, Bring everything together on the plate, the venison with generous spoonfuls of sauce and a few pieces of the quince. Seasonal and most delicious! Lesley Holdship Hare in the Woods 07754 086316 7A Market Place,Faringdon SN7 7HL

Ordinary Lives In Extra-Ordinary Circumstances We have all had moments where we want to scream out loud, cry uncontrollably, or retreat into ourselves with a deep sigh of defeat and despair. I can assure you that these feelings and actions are an ordinary response to an extra-ordinary circumstance. An extra-ordinary circumstance is something we aren’t expecting or we are emotionally unequipped and unprepared for: The most common extra-ordinary circumstances that brings people to therapy are – stress, shock and change. STRESS is caused by one or a combination of issues and circumstances that can cause pressure to build up over time. Every time a new issue comes up, it adds additional pressure to the build-up. It could be a continuing family issue; debt; home; work; or a toxic relationship. It could even be a deep rooted problem that has long since passed but emotionally, it keeps coming back to haunt you. SHOCK is caused by something completely unexpected. It is a one off and often sudden experience that cannot be prepared for. It could be the sudden loss of a loved one; being the victim or witness of a traumatic event; or the sudden realisation that - for good or bad - life is about to change. The surprise and trauma of these type of circumstance hits us right in the core of our being. Leaving us confused, angry, distraught, lost and afraid. CHANGE is inevitable whether we want it or not; and our resistance to change causes additional stress and shock. It doesn’t matter how big or small the change - the impact is still the same – we feel fear because of the unknown and unplanned consequences of change. Imagine your life as a tall brick chimney. Each brick is a person or life experience that you have collected and nurtured all through the years. You may imagine it is wobbly and made of substandard bricks and mortar but it still functions. Or it may be strong and sturdy. Whatever you imagine, watch suddenly - out of nowhere - a great big wrecking ball swings in and knocks the chimney down. The therapist role is to help you rebuild and in some circumstances redesign that chimney. It maybe that some of your bricks are damaged beyond repair and you need to grieve that loss and allow yourself time to come to terms with the new look and structure of your life. Some people may be glad the chimney is destroyed and use therapy to rethink and construct a life in a completely new and imaginative way. Whatever your issue or extra-ordinary circumstance, please feel free to call or email for a free, confidential, no obligation assessment of your needs and options. Dodging the Headaches!

Cameo Glass, 100 Faraday Park, Dorcan Ind. Est., Swindon, SN3 5JF Tel: 01793 513864 Fax: 01793 535476 Email: sales@cameo-glass.com

Hold the sulphites and dodge the headache! We are now right in the midst of the autumnal weather where nights are drawing in and fires are being lit. The great thing about seasonality is the change in behavioural patterns and the urge to eat and drink more ‘wintry’ type of fayre, which in this line of work, features red wine. I have a dear friend who until recently, recoiled at the offer of a glass of red at the dinner table, explaining that red wine gave them a headache. Anguishing at the thought of one missing out on the delights that red wine has to offer, a little research found that there were wines on the market that could reduce the potential of headaches. What causes the headache? Sulphites (aka Sulphur Dioxide SO2) assist in preventing wine from oxidation which is the reason why they are usually used throughout the winemaking processes of vinification, ageing and bottling. Some people are more sensitive to sulphites than others, which is why they experience headaches and other negative effects. Nutritionist Cassandra Barns explains: ‘Sulphites can be a key problem for wine drinkers. Although many people have no problem with sulphites, others can experience sneezing, headaches, asthma attacks or even flu-like symptoms or feel extra grim the morning after.’ The susceptibility to these reactions depends on the body’s ability to break down sulphur compounds. However, no wine is completely sulphur free. During fermentation, the yeasts produce sulphites, although in much smaller amounts than those added by a winemaker. So although sulphite free wine will have no added sulphites, it will have a small amount that occur naturally during the winemaking process. Other factors in red wine that have been suggested to cause detrimental effect to people are histamines, tannins, yeast and the obvious …..alcohol! Again, it depends entirely on the individual and the sensitivity of the individual to these components. Why do wine labels state ‘contains sulphites’? By law, if the total sulphite content per bottle (added + spontaneous) exceeds 10mg/litre (which is still very low), this must be indicated on the label. Doses routinely added by winemakers during the various production stages usually equates overall to 100mg/litre. Selling wines containing over 250mg/litre is prohibited, as amounts over this level make them extremely harmful to health. The skill in reducing the amount of sulphites necessary in the production of wine lies in creating conditions that lead to the lowest formation of sulphites possible; hygiene of the grapes and the winery, vinification times and temperatures and selection of low-sulphite producing yeasts to name a few. How long do wines that have no added sulphites last? Sulphur dioxide (SO2) acts as a preservative, so wines without added sulphites do not last as long – from 1-2 years depending on the variety. Sulphite free organic wines are available from Den Boer Wines. E: denboerwines@hotmail.com

Thermal Imaging Specialist

KEEPING YOUR HORSES AND DOGS IN PERFECT HEALTH Not only is it our wish to keep healthy, active and mobile, it is the wish of animals too! “If only they could speak!” we say. Actually, they do - in many different ways. The most obvious visual conversation from them to us is a demonstration of physical difficulties in one form or another, which generally leads on to behavioural issues if not addressed. Thermal Imaging is a wonderful and accurate additional modality to the traditional X-ray and Sonar scanning systems. Thermal imaging deals with changing physiology and is pin point accurate. This means if you have a dog or horse with some form of mobility issues, whether they are permanent or come and go, definite diagnosis has been guarded or undisclosed, thermal scanning may give you the answers. Sub-clinical skeletal issues are near impossible to find with traditional methods for they hide in the quagmire of grey areas and disrupt joint immobility in a very subtle and devious way, then suddenly raise their ugly head when over the months or years the animal has made all sorts of compensations for the discomfort, and finally the joints and the body says, “enough is enough!” Because we do not ride our dogs, their problems are not as profound! Horses on the other hand have to carry our weight and perform all manner of things we request them to do which is not natural, but really fun of course! The list of physical evasions the horse displays are endless. Horses then decide that deciphering their problems should be made as difficult as possible! To horse owners this statement will no doubt resonate. For example, 5 or 6 little ‘evasions’ might relate to one and the same problem, or might relate to 3 or 4! So the process of elimination begins and these processes are very costly and often don’t result in the answers. During my 55 odd years of riding, racing, breeding, jumping, hunting, polo and endurance these mysterious and noble creatures have taught me: 95% of all behavioural issues are caused by us, and 98% of them stem from teenie weenie sub-clinical skeletal issues that are easily over-looked or commonly regarded as bad behaviour! When their skeleton is adjusted to perfect alignment, their movement is symmetrical and fluid, their performance levels are improved, their concentration and ability to apply themselves to the task becomes simpler and pleasurable, nasty evasions become a thing of the past and they are able to perform with absolute cadence. Of the 1012 horses I have scanned, the above has applied to all those who have been treated! So-called bad behaviour was suddenly no longer there! From poorly performing, aggressive race horses with group one potential to international show jumpers and children's pony’s. Conformation aside, the skeleton needs to be perfectly aligned for perfect performance. I would love to show you if you are having problems with either your horse or dog. HIGHWORTH TRAVEL Healthy Habits for Life Developing healthy eating habits for life is essential when it comes to maintaining or obtaining long term health and wellness. It is important to eat fresh, minimally-processed food as often as possible, containing a balance of proteins, fibrous vegetables, quality carbohydrates and healthy fats. We should also adjust portions sizes to meet our health and body composition and weight goals. Basing your meals on a mix of protein, high fibre vegetables, ‘smart’ carbs and healthy fats is important to balance your nutrition and give your body everything it needs to keep you well, and not craving quick treats which might upset your ability to maintain a good physique. When preparing meals, it is easy to mix and match your ingredients to give a balanced plate of food. Think protein first, then fibrous vegs, then a small amount of starchy carbs that will fill you up but not be too heavy in sugars, followed by a small amount of healthy fats. Fish – green leafy vegetables – quinoa – sesame oil Meat – peppers – brown rice – coconut oil Lentils – carrots – sweet potatoes – olive oil Portion sizes must vary according to how active you are, your calorific needs, how often you eat, whether you graze or have 3 meals a day, your appetite and whether you are maintaining weight or trying to lose weight. A good guide as to how your plate should look is to have a chicken breast size of protein, twice that of vegetables, a cupped hand full of starchy carbs such as brown rice or bulgur wheat and tablespoon full of healthy oils (olive oil, nuts avocado etc.) If you are a particularly active person eating 3 meals per day and not snacking, you could increase the above sizes. Or if you are trying to lose weight and think it doesn’t look very much it might be an idea to put the food on a smaller plate. Or increase the amount of green leafy vegetables or brightly coloured ‘above ground’ vegetables that will give your plate a fuller appearance without the energy value of the energy dense starchy foods such as potatoes and pastas! If you are putting weight on then I would say the balance is wrong - you are eating too much, moving too little or a combination of both, and perhaps eating the wrong type of food that your body is struggling with. Healthy food doesn’t have to be boring food. Add seasoning and flavours through herbs, spices, salt, peppers etc. Make your own sauces using simple ingredients and thicken with natural juices from the food you are cooking or by adding cornflour. Try new things – don’t be too afraid to experiment. Most of us know what works when it comes to healthy eating, most know what they should be doing – some have all the books and apps, but only a few of us put it into practice on a regular basis. Be honest with yourself, being naughty with food occasionally is OK but every day is not – it will lead to an imbalance, weight gain and a cycle of dieting and dissatisfaction. Then, feeling miserable about ourselves continues the negative circle. Change it and focus on the positives. If it is really all too much to deal with then start by adding more vegetables to your plate. It will make a positive difference. Make it interesting – make it tasty – make it fun.
