Jen Greenwood One of the most enjoyable aspects of photography is that you can always find something new to shoot. You don’t necessarily have to go far afield to find inspiration. I am rarely without my camera and, whether in the car or on foot, I am always on the lookout for the next shot. Invariably and frustratingly, I see the best shots when I’m in the car and can’t possibly pull over to take them for fear of being a danger to myself or others. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve wanted to stop on the Severn Bridge because I’ve seen the most magnificent sunset or seascape. It’s infuriating, but I console myself with the thought that one day I will walk along that bridge and get those elusive shots! In the meantime, I enjoy local walks around Faringdon with my dog. My routes are always similar but the landscape isn’t; it’s constantly changing. It was early in the morning when I set off for the Folly, hoping to catch a sunrise. I was surprised at how quickly it was becoming daylight and I thought I’d missed the chance to capture the moment. However, when I arrived at the cricket club I was delighted to see the sun about to burst through the clouds and I quickly seized the opportunity to get this shot. WHO’S NEXT?

Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Then there are the business awards presented by the Fairford and Lechlade Business Club, who are launching their event later this month. We will be attending the launch event and will report on the categories and criteria next month. Faringdon businesses have done well at these awards previously, so let’s see if we can come away with some more awards in 2018! Finally, at the time of going to press there were a limited number of tickets available for Faringdon’s social event of the year; “The Community Ball” – this annual fundraiser has been running for several years and takes place at the Sudbury House on Saturday 18th November from 6:30pm until late. To find out how your local school, community group or charity can benefit from the proceeds, please e-mail paul@brame.co.uk

Business Update Urgent action required! The £1.55 billion pot available for LEADER grant funding will be closing soon. OK, it will be closing in early 2019, but the application process does take some time! The grants available range from £5,000 up to £100,000 and are open to all businesses, community organisations and individuals. If you want to find out more about LEADER funding and the criteria for applying there is a roadshow at South Oxfordshire District Council’s offices on Thursday 23rd November at 1pm. Go to www.oxfordshireleader.org.uk for details. The Vale of White Horse District Council are almost ready to submit the latest part of their Local Plan for independent examination. It contains a number of references to the economic prosperity of the area and sets out the locations for housing in our administrative area in an attempt to fulfil Oxford’s housing need up to 2031, which cannot be met from within the City boundaries. Before the Plan is submitted, there will be a statutory six week consultation period after which the Plan will be submitted to the Secretary of State. The Council are bringing the Local Plan to Faringdon at 4pm on Tuesday 14th November, when there will be an exhibition followed by a public meeting in the Corn Exchange. We are fast approaching the “awards” season; the inaugural business awards run by Vale4Business were launched last month. There are eight categories; New Business, Innovation, Small Business, Large Business, Social Responsibility , Business Leader of the Year, Business Space of the Year and Employer of the Year. Further details about this and the Local Plan mentioned above can be found on theVale4Business website. Your Chamber of Commerce is looking to support any businesses that wish to be considered for an award.

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club On 2nd October at 7.30 am we arrived at The Bell for our monthly networking meeting with a theme of ‘why I love what I do’. It was a great blend of regular attendees, some new faces and some returning faces who had not been able to be with us for a while. After our initial open networking session, we sat down for breakfast and then everyone was give 2 – 3 minutes to talk about their work and why they love doing it, or any other topic that was pertinent to them at the time. Needless to say, there were a great range of reasons that people love doing what they do but almost without exception they could be put into an overall category of helping people and businesses develop, grow and be more successful. An atmosphere of mutual support was generated with a greater depth of understanding about what motivates individuals to deliver their products and services. At our next meeting on 6 November we will hear from Anne O’Reilly who will talk to us about ‘The 6 Key Steps to Growing a Profitable Business. To book your place go to: https://fbbcnetworking.co.uk/

Our recent new arrivals include a good cross-section of whiskies, with something among them for all tastes. One of my all time favourites is now on its third release and that’s the Balblair 1999. Matured in both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks this whisky combines the vanilla sweetness of the American oak and the robust spiciness of the Spanish oak to produce a whisky with a flavour profile of toffee, fruit cake, green apple and custard that is perfect for this time of year. It’s also beautifully presented so makes a great gift. For something a little lighter in style there is the new triple distilled Benromach. This is a real departure for Benromach as not only is it the first triple distilled whisky they’ve produced but it has also been matured in ex-bourbon casks rather than the sherry casks more usual for the distillery. Described as having notes of strawberry, elderflower and vanilla on the nose, and being smooth, sweet and fruity on the palate, finishing with the trademark Benromach whiff of smoke, this is an elegant whisky. We also have a couple of expressions from Mortlach (who partially triple distil their whisky) that have similar ‘dessert’ style flavours along with a little spice – beats trifle any day!

A gift of whisky is not just about the pleasure it brings with its aroma and taste but also about the enjoyment of sharing it with friends or those evenings when it makes a philosopher of you as you sit and ponder the meaning of life with a dram in your hand. So, with Christmas approaching this might be the time to sit down and compile your whisky wish list or to think about what you might treat someone else to.

Of course, this is the ideal time of year for a warming, peaty whisky and they don’t always have to be of the heavy, medicinal Islay style. Tomatin’s 2006 Cu Bocan is one of these more lightly peated expressions, with light, earthy smoke and warm winter spice flavours. It is a limited edition bottling and comes complete with a free whisky glass. Moving up a gear is the very first Balvenie Peat Week release, a single vintage expression that is produced during the one week a year that Balvenie use peat to dry their barley. Despite the high peating level (30ppm) the Speyside nature of the whisky, the use of Highland peat as opposed to Islay peat, and maturation in American oak all combine to produce a well rounded, smooth whisky that Balvenie describe as ‘peat smoke balancing citrus flavours, oaky vanilla and blossom honey’.

November Ramblings!

| The Advertiser | page 9 |

Hello and a warm welcome to the always very interesting month of November Cross roads for the seasons and its butterfly surprises. I was amazed to learn on Sunday that those Red Admiral butterflies, are much more resourceful and tougher than we think. The butterflies choosing to fully stay in the UK will chase each other, court each other then lay fertilised eggs any time of the year when they can. Eggs are tidily placed in small tents on nettle leaves – from egg to pupa in the summer takes 1 week, but in November onwards it could take up to 4 weeks for the change. People have reported seeing male chasing male in January, as well as a vertical flight of a breeding pair on New Year’s Day. Nothing to do with high spirits – either friend or butterfly!! I write this on World Mental Health Day. Businesses are becoming increasingly aware of their role in good mental health provision (our younger Daughter is promoting this in Wales). Much of maintaining good mental health is up to each one of us being physically active with sport, reading on or off the computer, phone or tablet screen, sailing, walking the dog – or simply a quiet walk in the countryside. Mindfulness is a revived concept for mental and inner health at the moment, I have discussed this in the past. Coming into the sphere of mental health are fireworks. Not wishing to be a dampener, I do think that the mental health of both animals, farm, horse or pets and owners can be put into a negative phase at this time of year. Loud noises may be an issue within the context of Armed Forces PTSD or for people with bad experiences, as well as pet owners really concerned about the massive anxiety and loss of mental wellbeing of their pet at firework time. Preparation will always begin well ahead of the expected events at Halloween and Bonfire Night, New Year’s Eve…. At most practices, there will be many medicines that are in-stock at this time of the year – amongst others, there will be Feliway and Adaptil, Pet Remedy, Zylkene, Calmex and Yucalm. For acute need, there is another new product from the USA called Sileo, which is an effective oral gel at such times as this. Your own practice will have details of availability and suitability for your own pet. Much information exists from charities like the Blue Cross and Dogs Trust regarding fireworks and loud noises, as well as from the manufacturers of the short list of products that we use here at my Practice. Many things can be done on the night, creating an indoor cave, soothing music and curtains at dusk, as well as choosing a nonchalant, easy-going way of Interacting with your pet. On the Blue Cross web site www.bluecross.org.uk you will find advice on, keeping your dog happy, horses and ponies, cats, and rabbits. Much information has also been put out by the big equine charities about the risk of big falls of sycamore seeds due to high winds over pastures overgrazed by horses. Sycamore seeds at the moment and shoots and old seeds in Spring may be eaten, a typical myopathy or “Sycamore poisoning” can be fatal for horses, it is seasonal and is thought that the helicopter seeds in Autumn, and the saplings in Spring, contain Hypoglycin-A that causes atypical myopathy in horses. Information about this can be found on the Blue Cross web site www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/sycamore-poisoning-horses Classic seasonal problems for dogs, include the horse-chestnut seeds or “conkers”. Most dogs remain asymptomatic (showing no symptoms) after conker ingestion or go on to develop mild gastrointestinal signs only. Serious cases of poisoning are uncommon. In the majority of symptomatic cases, dogs present with nausea and vomiting only, but may occasionally develop abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, lethargy, ataxia, pyrexia, depression and tremor. There is also a significant risk of bowel obstruction, particularly if the conker is ingested whole, watch out for your dog with conker's. Be mindful, have a great month, keep safe, I leave you with this last thought! "Autumn is the eternal corrective. It is ripeness and colour and a time of maturity; but it is also breadth, and depth, and distance. What man can stand with Autumn on a hilltop and fail to see the span of his world and the meaning of the rolling hills that reach to the far horizon?" | The Advertiser | page 10 | Waymark Opens Its Doors!

With nearly 50 years of property experience between them, 2 years ago, chartered surveyors Ed and Jenny Preece took the decision to move into residential estate agency, being a natural addition to their established commercial property consultancy business. They were convinced that their wider property and marketing experience would be beneficial and add value to their clients in the residential market. Having for a number of years successfully run their business from a converted outbuilding at their Uffington home, they further adapted the office to include a showroom for the residential side. There were one or two comments that they were not ‘proper’ estate agents because they did not have a town-centre office but through hard work, attention to detail, and a strong customer centred service, Waymark quickly established itself as a credible estate agency practice. With their continued success and the doubling of staff numbers, it became very clear that they would need more space. They feel now, is the right time to open a main high street premise and that Faringdon is the perfect partner to their Uffington office. If you visit Faringdon regularly, you will have noticed a lot of work going on at what was The Nut Tree gift shop at 2 Cornmarket. This has been nearly nine months of preparation, planning and painting which is coming to fruition at the end of this month. It has been an exciting time and finally Waymark is counting down the days to opening making sure all the finishing touches are in place. Ed and Jenny have wanted to create an environment that is appealing both inside and out and a little different from what most would expect when walking into an estate agents. What they are seeking to achieve is the same friendly and relaxed place which is a natural extension of their Uffington roots. Having had a ‘sneak peak’, it is safe to say they have achieved a welcoming place to chat through all things property. Be it the comfy sofa or the greater privacy of other seating areas, this is the perfect setting to discuss your commercial or residential property needs. The whole team at Waymark are very much looking forward to being a closer part of the town (and Ed in having the pasty and cheese shop next door!). They are really looking forward to having people popping in for a chat and a coffee.

Shirley Jackson The Haunting Of House Hill The August Bank Holiday was redolent with the scent of honeysuckle and the all too rare feeling that we were finally able step off the treadmill, get away from the daily grind AND have the weather to support it. Over that weekend, I decided to revisit old favourites for no other reason than the air was humming with the last gasp of the summer and I wanted to feel as cosseted and warm as the air itself. I’ve been reading a lot of Shirley Jackson this year, awaiting the release of a new autobiography in November on the grand dame of Gothic American writing. One of the first books I ever read of hers was The Haunting of Hill House, more a novella than a full novel, and the inspiration for two film adaptations, with the earlier version (1963) being the better – aren’t they always? It may seem bizarre to some that I headed down the path of contemporary Gothic writing at peak summer…but I liked the contrast. Like all of Jackson’s writing, the twist in the tale comes when you least expect it. If you don’t shy away from exploring the darker things in the literary canon, Jackson is very much the lady for you. I also plunged back into the autobiography of probably my biggest literary idol, one who has inspired me from childhood to the present day. I read my first Agatha Christie at the age of eleven, a copy of Peril at End House my father picked up at a jumble sale and knew I would love. Christie was never that fond of Peril at End House, but for me it opened up a treasure trove which I’ve spent many a year exploring. The only reason I’m excited about the new Kenneth Branagh-helmed film version of Murder on the Orient Express is the conversations it will throw up about the no doubt superior classic version directed by Sidney Lumet in 1974. Christie’s autobiography is by no means the definitive version of her life. She leaps right over her famed disappearance in 1926, when, driven by the stress that the end of her first marriage caused she did a midnight flit and was eventually found, after a national search, in a spa in Harrogate. But it doesn’t matter about what she doesn’t cover – what she does cover fills the reader with the delight of an author charmed by life, with a mind that never stopped delving into mystery, and pulling up novel after novel that excited and inspired. I’ve never stopped reading Christie, and I never will. She is as timeless as the English oak, and emblematic of the best of England as that venerable old tree. Long may we all be intrigued.

TRYING NEW THINGS CAN HELP WITH WELLNESS Engaging in things that are both familiar and comfortable can be good for our mental health as it can be safe, but sometimes trying something new can have benefits too. YOU HAVE A CHOICE: When you choose to do something new you will always reap the benefits of making that choice. Whether it turns out to be what you expected or not, deciding to do something is better than not making a decision and not experiencing what could have been. HAVE A GO: Trying something new can induce lots of sensations both emotional and physical. Being able to experience a new thing in a supported way can be very positive. NEW PERSPECTIVE: There is always room to learn and understand new things. Seeing something from a fresh perspective can be very rewarding especially for the soul. SHIFT YOUR ATTITUDE: There are lots of reasons to not do things however a shift in attitude maybe all that is needed. Open yourself up to something new. FIND JOY IN NEW THINGS: It is a great feeling when we use our energy for things that we find joy in. Sometimes the things that challenge us also teach us new things, that can help to keep us well and can help others do the same. IMPROVE OUR BRAIN: Our brains have a fantastic ability to change over time and to learn new things. The more often we try something unfamiliar, the more we change our hardwired patterns in the brain, eventually making a new skill. We are keeping our brains healthy and able.

HIGHWORTH TRAVEL INDEPENDENT LUXURY TRAVEL SPECIALIST

TRY IT, IT MIGHT WORK: When it comes to our health if something is not working why do we keep doing it? Probably because it always seems more comfortable to do what we’ve always done! Don’t be afraid to admit that something isn’t right. Confront it! Sometimes you need to allow someone to help you with this but trying a new thing might actually work. Wouldn’t it be good if we tried something and we felt better? There are a lot of interrelated dimensions to wellness as well as the physical. Emotional, interpersonal and social, intellectual, spiritual and environmental wellness should all be put in balance - we are looking at an holistic approach to how we successfully live our lives. Even if it doesn’t work for you at least you have had a go and made change – and perhaps you can pass on some the positive things you have learnt to improve someone else’s life. All the best. Rich.

For a 4th year International Sherry Week will be celebrated in a multitude of events in more than 25 countries during the week of November 6th – 12th, 2017. Sherry is a fortified wine made from the white grapes of Palomino, Pedro Ximenez or Moscatel. Sherry has a protected designation of origin status and according to Spanish Law, all wine labelled as 'Sherry' must originate from what is known as the 'Sherry Triangle’ which is in the province of Cadiz, between Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlucar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa Maria, Southern Spain.

SUNDAY - TUESDAY CLOSED WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY

10 - 4:30PM 10 - 4:30PM 10 - 4:30PM 10 - 4:30PM

The production of sherry facilitates the diversity of style. Following the fermentation of the base wine, grape spirit is added, fortifying the wine and increasing its alcohol level. The fortified wine is stored in 500 litre North American oak casks (aka butts) which are filled, leaving an ullage, or empty space ('two fists' width) at the top to enable a 'flor', or a film of yeast to develop. The sherry is put into the Solera system (Criaderas y Solera), where younger wine is added to the barrels at the start of a series of 3-9 barrels. The Solera operates on a system whereby a portion of the wine is moved to the next barrel down, blending with older wine. This occurs with each barrel in the series. The final product, depending on the style, may be between 5-30% of each barrel in the Solera. The age of the youngest wine to be bottled is determined by the number of barrels in the Solera, with each bottle containing some wine older than is declared. The wine which is to be bottled is taken from the butts (barrels) at floor level, the solera, which contain the oldest wines. This method allows the sherry to undergo a lengthy ageing process – some are matured for more than 20 or 30 years! Legally, Sherry must be aged at least two years prior to sale.

BATHROOM SHOWROOM Open to the Public & Trade

Faringdon is joining in with the Sherry Week celebrations at La Bobina with Den Boer Wines on Thursday, 9th November 7.30pm. The evening will begin with a sherry cocktail upon arrival, followed by an explanation of the process of sherry production. A range of sherries will be tasted alongside tapas dishes, followed by a ‘Venencia Relay’. Tickets are £25 are available from La Bobina tel: 01367 240578 Sherry Week
