Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Despite the holiday season we had a good turnout of regular members for our September meeting in The Bell. We spend a little while at the beginning of each meeting catching up with each other in a ‘free’ networking style before grabbing some breakfast and settling into the main part of morning’s activity. Although in the true sense of the definition we only had one specific ‘retailer’ in the group – Bryan Orchard from Cartridge UK (Wantage) – we were all gathered with interest to hear from Jonathan Russell talking on the topic of ‘Retail is dead, Long live retail!’. Jonathan has a wealth of experience advising clients of his accountancy practice on best practices and how to optimise their turnover. He illustrated his talk with real experiences from anonymous clients. We held our normal ’60-second’ round while tucking into breakfast and then prepared to hear form Jonathan. Jonathan described how the nature of retail business had needed to change when facing the influence of technology and changing consumer purchasing behaviour. It was no surprise that on-line shopping has had a major impact on the traditional ‘retailer’ and this is very evident from the nature of the outlets we now have in Faringdon. We had a lively question and answer session where there was further speculation about ‘virtual shopping’ being introduced through advanced technology. It was agreed that there will be a continuing role for the ‘retailer’ but the nature of their business and inter action with consumers would be different from the traditional model. At our next meeting on 1 October we are looking forward to a good turnout. Everyone is welcome so do book a place on our website www.fbbc-networking.co.uk.

Roberts Ramblings!

Welcome to another month’s scrapbook! A delayed piece of handicraft due to the very recent return from a well-needed holiday taken in the western Scottish Highlands. We wound the clock back and travelled up by sleeper train, with car hire at the other end. As well as being up amongst very familiar mountains, beaches and lochs, we added the foaming waterfalls which had taken on a new dimension and were bursting over rocks and from between great stands of heather still in bloom, aided by all the rain! Wildlife was very generous to us from sea to mountaintop and we have some lovely memories of very magic moments. So many busy, big bumblebees too, flying around the honey-scented heather blossom and late meadow flowers. So, here we are today – heavy rain, many small apples dropping off the hedgerow trees and still, until today as I write, swallows and house martins. We saw swallows preparing to cross great arms of the sea in Scotland and I always wish them a safe journey, perilous from the very beginning. The swallows fly over waters well-fished by diving gannets and cormorants. I wonder if the fish catch sight of those swallows keeping so low over the water to find lighter winds to fly into. A very well-researched study has just found that taking omega-3 fish-oil supplements is far less effective for cardiovascular health when compared to eating the actual oily fish. The study did not look at the effect of omega-3 and -6 oils on coat and joint health however. With the addition of freshwater fish to my daily care and husbandry, I’m getting increasingly interested in fish-keeping and have found a very well-informed and helpful sources of experienced knowledge and advice. I’m also using my limited time-off to study fish medicine. It all starts with regular monitoring of water quality and I really did enjoy my biochemistry at Uni! In a similar vein, everyone in the dairy industry, from organic and conventional milk production to consumers with our readily available bottled milk and cartons of yogurt will look positively at some new research data released recently concerning milk products. The study, with its lead author Dr M Dehghan working in the Population Health Research Unit and the Department of Medicine at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada, was recently published in The Lancet. A PURE study, following over 136,000 adults in 21 countries for an average of 9 years. Dr. Dehghan said that the study suggests that the consumption of dairy products should not be discouraged and perhaps should even be encouraged in low and middle-income countries where dairy consumption is low. The study authors also add their comment that CVD (cardiovascular disease) is the leading cause of human mortality world-wide, with 80% of the incidence in low- and middle-income countries. They observed that higher dairy consumption was associated with lower risks of mortality and CVD, with milk and yogurt found to be the dairy products associated with the most benefit – and beyond that, whole-fat dairy was also associated with lower rates of mortality compared to lower fat dairy products. Halloween and November 5th are approaching, with many clients fearful of more distress and worry on behalf of their domestic pets, whether large and small, horse, dog or cat. Please consult your veterinary practice regarding straightforward measures available to reduce these worries; one oral gel seems effective, starting to work within 20-30 minutes and can be repeated at a lower dose later in the evening. Flower remedies also have a place. Till next month… Robert. Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

Well-known local artist Peter Wheeler with his latest commission!! Peter and Thomas – new Best Friends Faringdon artist Peter Wheeler has just completed his latest commission – a new face for Thomas the Tank Engine!! During the summer Faringdon Rotary Club’s 20 year old charity float was found to be in need of an extensive makeover to include a new friendly, smiling face. Cue persuasive phone call to Peter’s Faringdon studio. Once over his initial shock, Peter relished this complete change of genre from a very disciplined working life in graphic design, followed in retirement by the freedom to record his passion for landscapes and architecture. The more widely his work has become appreciated the more diverse his commissions and his repertoire regularly includes meticulously good figure work, well observed animals and whimsical imagination in both watercolour and acrylics either on paper, canvas and even murals! And now yet another change of direction – “I’m always up for a challenge” said Peter “the Rotarians devote so much time to raising money for charity and I am more than happy to add my contribution. We all look forward to Santa’s visits on his float and this year everything will be shining and smiling a little brighter”. Peter is a longstanding member of the Faringdon Art Society, and will be exhibiting at their 2018 Annual Art Exhibition in the Corn Exchange for three days from Friday 26th October. Peter can be contacted at AshCloseArt@talktalk.net or on 01367 241453

Stagecoach Performing Arts Faringdon participated in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous performance of one show on Sunday. Celebrating the 30-year anniversary of Stagecoach, students from Stagecoach Faringdon joined up with schools nationwide and abroad (including Germany, Canada and Malta) to stage Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Junior. Performing simultaneously at 6pm BST on 1st July 2018, 200 Stagecoach Performing Arts schools took part, the world record attempt commemorating three decades of its schools sparking children’s creativity through singing, dancing and acting classes. Upwards of 12,500 children were involved, across 144 venues around the world. Stagecoach will secure an official Guinness World Record when independent adjudication verifies the attempt in the coming weeks. Once confirmed, Stagecoach will have broken its own record, which currently stands from 2008. Almost ten years ago Stagecoach organised the largest simultaneous performance of one show for its 20th anniversary, achieving 66 performances of Glad Rags across the UK, Ireland and Germany. More than double the number of schools signed up to join the festivities in 2018. The stunning performance was attended by actor and musician, Gary Kemp, 58, acting as one of the independent adjudicators. Kemp said, “It was wonderful to see a show that included such a wide group of performers. The concert was superbly presented with great emotional commitment. The focus and professionalism shone throughout. James and the team at Stagecoach Faringdon are incredible role models. It is so good to have such an amazing platform for young people, in and around Faringdon. Bravo to everyone involved.” Principal of Stagecoach Faringdon, James Barker, 39, said, “We are so proud to have participated in this once in a lifetime World Record attempt. The students worked really hard and their performance on Sunday was outstanding. We were also really proud to have 5 independent adjudicators attending, including Gary Kemp from Spandau Ballet, who lives locally and is a big supporter of our school. Also in attendance were Cllr Kiera Bentley, Deputy Mayor of Faringdon and TV Presenters Shaun Crawley and Hayley Green.” Early Stages classes are available for children aged four to six and Main Stages classes take place for six to 18 year olds every weekend during term time. 1000 A whisky loving couple who come into our shop regularly had been encouraged by our love for Islay and its whiskies to make their first pilgrimage there this year, and during a recent visit to us their enthusiastic tales of the famed ‘Whisky Isle’ rekindled thoughts of this very special place. Memories were recalled of listening to the lonely cry of the oystercatchers as we waited in the dark of an early morning to catch the ferry to Islay from Tarbert; the endearing Islay habit of waving to other road users; and the renowned generosity of the tastings at Bruichladdich. Our customers had memories of their own to add, including the tot of whisky they were offered at their B&B with breakfast every day, and their warehouse tasting tour at Lagavulin with the legendary Iain McArthur. It was heartening to hear that, despite the corporate juggernauts thundering on, in other parts of the whisky business, life at the ‘coal face’ of whisky production continues in the same spirit as ever. However, evolution is vital to survival and Islay’s continually evolving whisky scene is necessary, not just to meet the demands of the consumer but also to make island life viable for its inhabitants in terms of employment, infrastructure support etc. The newest addition to the island’s distilleries, Ardnahoe, is due to open any day and the current youngest distillery on Islay, Kilchoman, has just built a new kiln and malt floor as part of their expansion plans. Kilchoman holds a special place in my heart as I was lucky enough to try some of their first run of spirit, back in 2005. It was sweet and peaty, with its own distinct personality, and over the years that early promise has been fulfilled. Their core range cleverly includes two different takes on maturation that influence the underlying citrus and smoke differently. Although both use a mix of bourbon and sherry casks for maturation, one expression, Machir Bay, includes a higher proportion of bourbon casks in the vatting - which brings vanilla and a floral freshness. The other, Sanaig, has more sherry casks vatted in, which leads to rich, fruit cake flavours intertwined with the smoke. Of all of Kilchoman’s expressions though, it is probably the 100% Islay that is my favourite. This whisky is not only Islay through and through, it is 100% produced at Kilchoman. Grown, malted, distilled, matured and bottled on the farm, not only do I love the ethos behind this truly local whisky but I also find the creamy mouth feel and rich, peaty sweetness of this expression particularly beguiling. Currently a yearly limited edition, Kilchoman’s new kiln and malt floor will make it possible for the 100% Islay to, hopefully, become a core expression – thus increasing availability and potentially bringing cost savings. That, for me, is a definite evolutionary benefit. Fran Thomas

Wild Bear Shamanism at the Lotus Retreat. A new phenomenon has arrived in Faringdon! A way of connecting to spirit using a contemporary form of the ancient practice of shamanism. Evidence of shamanic practice reaches back tens of thousands of years - in fact we have all evolved from shamanic communities! The everyday techniques of the cross cultural, simple practice of ‘core shamanism’ makes access to the healing, energy and advice of the worldbeyond-the-physical available to anyone who wants to try for themselves or to experience receiving healing. The central theme of shamanism is that everything has a spirit, or is ‘spirit’. The shaman (pronounced ‘shah-man’) traditionally sends his or her soul on a shamanic ‘journey’ to meet with the spirit world using the sound of a drum or rattle (core shamanism does not use herbs or plants to shift consciousness, just the repetitive sound of drum, rattle or sometimes song). Spirit ‘helpers’ or ‘power animals’ are sought for advice, information or healing to take back to ordinary living. Today the shamanic journey is often used by non-shamans to help us to feel connected, to heal emotionally or physically and to get advice on practical issues such as how to get on better in a relationship or help to find a meaningful career. Shamanism is not a religion and people from all walks of life, background and religious denominations use the techniques to help them to live a more fulfilled life. Healing is always something many people are interested in or feel drawn towards. In shamanic healing personal power is not used, but the spirits ‘do the work’. In the shamanic worldview, we have imbalance in our mental, emotional or physical health because we have lost energy or because we have inappropriate energy in our personal energy field. Traditional healing practices to return or build energy, ‘soul retrieval’ or ‘extraction’ work to remove unhelpful energy can be used – as well as finding ways to stop us ‘leaking’ energy as we go about our daily lives. Joanna has been teaching shamanism since 2001 and has helped many people to find and meet with their own power animals or helpers – even those who never thought they’d be able to! She has trained with shamanic teachers from all over the world, has a regular personal practice and also works one to one. Her main focus is to help people to bring back and integrate the power and advice from the spirit world – in this way we can live extraordinary, ordinary lives. Joanna offers workshops and one to one work is available at The Lotus Retreat on London Street. The first beginners workshop will be on 11th & 18th November. Faringdon Unwrapped consists of a group of residents who are passionate about making a difference to the environment and to their local community. The group of volunteers got together after Helen Brown, now Chair of the co-op, posted on social media asking whether anyone would be interested in forming a wholefood zero waste co-op with her. This led to a whole range of people coming forward and now there’s a core team of people who each has an active role within this community-led venture. The main aim of Faringdon Unwrapped is to offer people the choice to buy as much or as little produce as they wish without having to purchase it in plastic packaging – much of which cannot even be recycled – as easily as possible. People will be invited to bring along their own reusable containers whether that means glass or plastic jars, or re-purposed ice-cream tubs, it doesn’t matter – and fill up with whatever there is on offer. To begin with there will be a modest range of food items available such as pasta, rice, nuts, pulses, grains and dried fruit, with the intention of diversifying once the co-op is up and running. The pop-up shop will be open in Stay Grounded.

How To Lose Weight? Are you still trying to decide how to lose weight? Last month one of my clients asked me, “I’m trying to lose weight! I keep trying to lose half a stone here and there, but it doesn’t stay off, what do you think I should do?” She had been told that the best way for her to lose weight was to start intermittent fasting or meal replacement shakes which she was unsure about. A brief discussion established that the reason she was yoyo dieting was because: 1. She was bored with the food 2. She got hungry 3. She didn’t plan her meals ahead Does this sound like you? If so you are not alone! She then said to me “I’ve been doing some research and I now find that the diets recommended for women over 50 are confusing – the messages are a mix of low carbohydrate, high fat, meal replacements, pills and potions, all promising to be THE diet, no wonder I can’t formulate a plan!!” So what to do? All of the methods work – some might work better for you than others. Whatever we do, we must find what works for us, and find something we’re happy to continue with in order to achieve sustained weight loss. What works for your friend might not be the best for you. With all that said, it is essentially about changing your relationship with food. Consider this: ● Feed your body because it needs the nutrients. ● Food should not be your enemy! ● Are you really hungry or is this an emotional response? If so try and replace eating with something you enjoy. ● No one eats perfectly so there’s no need to beat yourself up if it all goes wrong on one day. Tomorrow can be better no need to call the whole thing off! ● Be positive about the healthy things you have eaten. ● Start to improve the quality of the food you eat (get more nutrients into your body). ● Avoid getting bogged down in complicated recipes that maybe too time consuming to produce. Keep it simple. ● If you end up eating junk food, then balance it with something healthy – either on the same plate or in your next meal. ● Stop punishing yourself for all your previous poor choices and focus on what you are achieving now. ● Enjoy your food, slow down, chew it and appreciate it (you’re less likely to overeat if you take your time). ● Good food shouldn’t be bland! Make sure you add lots of lovely flavours if you are making it yourself. If it tastes great you will be more satisfied and less likely to snack later. ● Remember snacking is not essential! It is a modern-day addition promoted by the food industry to sell more food. ● Break the habit of eating between meals. Habits are formed over time and can be broken over time. It takes around 3 weeks, so stick with it until not snacking becomes your new habit! This is best done with a calmness of mind. The ability to start something new and stop something that is doing you harm is essential when breaking old habits. If you can control just one thing then you will be on your way to making better decisions and improve your own ability to achieve the results you are after. The Night Visitor By Lucy Atkins

The buddleia has been cut down leaving a skeleton of bare woody branches. It looks nice for a few months a year and looks like something’s been shipwrecked in the garden for the rest of it. Oh well. It could be a lot worse. The dog was trimmed at the end of July. When her black shaggy spaniel coat is stripped right back, her short speckled coat underneath, makes her look like a plump seal. But we’re letting her grow out. I’ve been reading Great Expectations for months now. I’m enjoying it thoroughly. I read half of it when I was studying for my degree on the Open University ten years ago. But I was younger then. And didn’t quite appreciate the fine wine quality of Dickens at that point, finding him verbose and over-involved. It took me reaching my mid-thirties to find the capacity and full appreciation that Dickens needs. But I take it in small doses, like a rich chocolate truffle. I would get drunk on Dickens otherwise and not in a good way. I read other things around it. Speaking of intoxicating, I recently indulged in The Night Visitor by Lucy Atkins, the perfect novel to keep you on your toes when the nights are drawing in. Oxford-based Atkins draws the net so tight around her reader that it is impossible to resist turning the next page, or the next or the next. The action is split between the sunny South of France and England on the crest of autumn, with Professor Olivia Sweetman engaging the services of researcher Vivian Tester in the development of a book based on diary extracts from Lady Annabel Burley. The diary was discovered by Vivian whose actions become increasingly murky as the book winds towards its close. On the way we experience things that go bump in the night, hysterical children, paranoia, betrayal, infidelity. We experience characters so well drawn that the reader can close their eyes and envisage the darkening woods of autumn England and smell the sunscreen in sweltering France. Friendships and marriages unravel, just like the reader’s resolve to put the book down.

01367 240402

I find as the nights get darker so do my literary tastes. I have a whole hoard of thrillers lined up for the coming months. The Night Visitor was a great place to start. So bring on the cinnamon smelling candles, the pumpkin spice lattes and whole weekends spent under my leopard-print blanket. Autumn, I’m ready for you. The NIght Visitor by Lucy Atkins is available from all good bookshops

The Feeling faded The tea was still brewing in the pot, as Susan turned and went to reach for the fridge door. Unfortunately, this small, simple manoeuvre resulted in her tripping over the dog which caused her to slide on the new Ikea rug. The dog yelped, she jumped and promptly dropped her favourite snowman china mug, which smashed into hundreds of little pieces. It had been a fairly busy day at work, and the need for tea was overwhelming. The last cuppa was at 7.30am, and it was already 6pm. She glanced at the broken cup and then at the dog who was shivering with fright and making her way to her bed. ‘Oh Sod it’ she said aloud in frustration and continued to open the fridge and grabbed the milk. Placing the carton on the side, she reached for a dirty cup in the sink.

Looked inside the cup she decided that it wasn’t too dirty, swilled it out and thought ‘what the hell, its only me’. She poured in the milk, add one teaspoon of sugar and then the tea. Stepping over the broken mug, she sat down on the sofa and took her first sip of sweet-smelling amber liquid, took a deep breath and sighed, the stressful day instantly becoming a memory and the feeling faded as only a cup of tea can make the world a right, just and genuinely lovely place to be. Favourite wines for the UK!

Rob.. The Cheese Man! Best selection! Best Cheese! Rob

Best Cornish Pasty’s. Really Tasty Gammon Ham. 01367 241702 Market Place Faringdon SN7 7HP

I am often asked, which are the most popular wines in the UK. For white, the answer is Sauvignon Blanc and for red it is Merlot. These two grape varieties are popular in most countries and they grow in the major wine growing areas of the world. So finding one is easy. The next step is finding the one you like best. Sauvignon blanc is grown in France, USA, Chile, Australia and New Zealand and loads of other places, so you get plenty of choice. The price varies from cheap to very expensive, with a mid range of £7 - £10. What you are looking for is the flavours that make it so popular. Generally you will find some fruits like passion fruit and other tropical fruits and lemon or lime which give a slight sharpness to the taste. As we are all unique in our tastes, some types and strengths of flavour will appeal more than others, though the flavours in these wines are easy to taste and blend well together to make a light refreshing drink. In the UK, the most famous wine region for Sauvignon blanc is the Marlborough region of New Zealand. The wines from New Zealand will always appeal and deliver on taste and value. Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s all have own label styled sauvignon blancs which have plenty of the flavours you want and keen pricing. Merlot is our favourite red wine and delivers the same mix of pleasing tastes and great value. These grapes also grow in most countries, so you get a huge range of wines to choose from. When tasting a merlot it is mostly cherry and plum that drive the flavour, there is very little tannin so you don’t get that furring of your teeth or tongue. Some countries mass produce merlot wines and these can taste a bit too sharp or acidic for drinking on their own. The USA and Chile have really pushed this grape and deliver both the cheap and some more pricey versions. In France, merlot wines come from several regions and are usually light easy drinking wines. It is easy to stick with just one country and still find a dozen different merlot wines, with varying degrees of quality and flavours. Given all this choice, how do you choose your red and white favourites. My suggestion is to start with the supermarket own brands as they tend to deliver a balance of quality and price. Then when you have a good idea of the flavours, simply try a wine that costs a pound or two more from one of the bigger wine makers. These are easy to spot as there will be many different wines from the same brand like Hardy’s, McGuigan, Villa Maria, Gallo, who make both types of wine. Then when you feel adventurous, try a couple from one region that are from smaller vineyards. If you don’t like the wine from a country or region, you can easily move to another region. I hope you enjoy exploring these two wine varieties and we will look at the number two wines next month. Ian Lloyd Wine Enthusiast ian@getwine.co.uk

Buying a NEW Home - Taking a Bananced View!

We understand the attraction of a brand new home. In fact, one of the Waymark team bought one last year. A bit like buying a brand new car there can be something very appealing in being the first owner. And the list of financial incentives can be extensive as can be the list of options to choose from including kitchens, sanitary ware, wardrobes, wall tiles and floor coverings. Having done a quick search across all property types and prices ranges on RightMove, in Faringdon, 34.16% of properties for sale are new. If you do the same search for properties in Shrivenham, 52.63% of the available stock are new homes.* On paper, you would have to say that a new home is full of promise. But, is this a short-term view of what is actually a longer term commitment? The typical new home is around 5% or more than its equivalent secondhand counterpart so if you are paying £400,000 for a new home, conceivably, £20,000 plus is available for the various incentives to sweeten the deal.

Paying slightly over the secondhand value can and often does have a range of benefits but the idea that all the extras are being given “free” by the builders is a false one. Accept that you are paying extra for them and you will then get a truer view of the underlying value of the home you have just bought. This aspect is important given how property prices are currently performing. We are used to properties enjoying significant increases in value so normally the adjustment in price which takes place when buying a new house is masked by the natural inflation of the property. In a slower market, where the increases are marginal, the time to recover the new home premium could take considerably longer. By way of illustration, if we assume a £400,000 purchase of a new house completed this month, then its second hand value (remember when you sell you’re no longer a ‘new home’), has immediately dropped down to say £380,000. That isn’t in itself an issue if you have no plans to move for a while but under the current house price growth it could be 3 years or more before its secondhand value reaches the price you paid. This is not Waymark saying do not buy a new home. It is us saying try to make sure that you limit the gap between what you pay and what it is worth the day after moving in. That said, if we have made you think about your next home, we do have a great range of sensibly priced existing properties for you to consider!
