Faringdon Bell Ringers Faringdon ringers congratulate Tom Edgeworth and his wife Claudia on the birth of their son, Oliver on 17th September. Many people will remember Tom from his time at Tescos. I expect there will be a ringing celebration in due course. The 7th September was a big day for ringers. Our Central Council met in London. No Faringdon ringers are exalted enough to be members but there were exhibitions and conferences and some of us went to the grand city towers that were allowing general ringing. An exciting day out. This month the Vale ringers met at Coleshill, a lovely place to visit in the summer. At the business meeting two of Faringdon’s new ringers, Rachel Kenward and Elin Bornemann, were elected to membership of the Oxford Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers. That means they’ve really made it ! If you’d like to try a new community based activity, that could become a lifetime passion! This is a good time of year to start. Whether or not you would like to try ringing we would love to welcome you to visit Sunday service ringing (9.45-10.30 am) or Monday practice (7.30-9.00 pm) at All Saints Church or you can contact us by emailing faringdonringers@gmail.com.

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club On a glorious late summer morning we gathered at Sudbury House hotel for our monthly meeting. There was an excellent turnout with several people attending for the first time. It is often the start of a refreshing period in September, so everyone was looking forward to hearing from Mel Humphries about hiring staff. During the sometimes nerve-racking ‘60 second round’ we heard about a fantastic range of services that attendees offered. We heard about marketing, leasing, training, IT, law as well as methods of collecting money and of course there was an accountancy input. It did cover the key elements that almost every small business needs to start up and keep running so if you are in that category do come and join us at one of our future meetings. We plan to meet on the first working Monday of every month and gather at Sudbury House Hotel at 7.30am. There are no membership fees just book and pay online and enjoy a great breakfast. Mel Humphries from the HR Department had prepared a brilliant presentation on recruiting you first member of staff in order to cope with your growing business. She expertly took us through the whole process carefully identifying where the pitfalls are, and describing options and alternatives that would lead to a happy employee and employer. Her ‘3 key tests’ on the type of contract to offer were extremely helpful. Our next meeting will be on 3 October when Gail Vallis from Clark Holt will help us with advice and guidance on what we need to consider when setting up Shareholder Agreements. To book your place you can register directly at: https://fbbc-networking.co.uk/event/shareholders-agreement/

Farundell by LR Fredericks Our splendid week of Indian summer has spluttered out into a weekend of driving rain and pendulous skies. Lights are coming on earlier and the heating may have gone on in more households that would dare to admit it. Autumn gives us a reason and a season to reflect; have we achieved what we set out to achieve this year? Have we done everything we can to lay our demons of discontent to rest? For me, I was out of action for a while, owing to the stresses and strains of a business partnership gone to seed. On the frantic ride towards achievement, kindness to one’s self is an often-overlooked necessity. If I had been kinder to myself, I could have avoided much pain. But as they say, you live and learn. And I have. This past summer saw me absorbed in some great books, one of which captivated more than many I’ve read in a long time. Farundell by LR Fredericks offers a mystical twist on the classic British vintage country house party novel. Set in the golden summer of 1924, the story follows soldier Paul Asher – traumatised by his experiences of the Western Front – taking up an invitation to help write the memoirs of explorer Lord Perceval Damory. Damory’s home – Farundell – is a captivating country house accommodated by some extraordinary characters. Right from the start, the author sets up a rich and varied supporting cast. There’s precocious Alice, the hermit Daniel, and gorgeous Sylvie, pulsing with sexuality, and leaping off the page as she weaves her web around a helpless Asher. The book has much in common with the best country-house novels – Brideshead Revisited being one of the most famous but the mystical twist gives it an added layer of complexity and life. It’s beautifully written and becomes a page-turner of the first degree. This was the U.S-born author’s debut novel, and stood on my shelf for a while before the season inspired me to pick it up, and I’m glad I did. I’ll be seeking out more from her. This one comes highly recommended. Claire Meadows claire@clairemeadows.co.uk www.clairemeadows.co.uk

OPENING TIMES SUNDAY - TUESDAY CLOSED On the 24th October, local mum Sally Tilling will be hosting a Pregnancy Supper Club at the Wildwood Restaurant in Wantage! The evening is a chance for local pregnant women to get together and meet new friendly faces for a social evening of good chat and good food! “My motivation for setting up the Pregnancy Supper Club is to meet like minded women in a similar stage to life as me. I am not from this area originally and was working full time during my first pregnancy so found it really difficult to meet other local mums. I soon learnt having a new-born baby can be quite isolating especially if living away from friends and family so making a few new connections before your baby is born can be really helpful. Now pregnant with baby number two I fully appreciate the importance of making those connections with other women going through similar experiences to me before the baby arrives and the supper club is a great excuse to get us pregnant ladies together! A little bit about me, the Pregnancy Supper Club host! I am a step mum to two, mummy to an 18-month-old and now 5 months pregnant with my second baby. I’m a dog owner, horse rider and general country lover. My professional background is in women’s health and fitness for all ages and stages of life including pre/postnatal exercise, I am a qualified massage therapist and offer pregnancy and sports massage from my private therapy room in Faringdon. During my first pregnancy and birth I benefited greatly from using hypnobirthing techniques. I felt so passionately about the positive pregnancy and birth hypnobirthing helped me achieve that I went on to train as a hypnobirthing teacher myself and now offer private and group courses to prepare parents for the birth of their baby. If you’d be interested in attending the Pregnancy Supper Club on Thursday 24th October then please don’t hesitate to get in touch either by email or phone for more details – sally@yourhypnobirthstory.com / 07585 708379

Healthy Living!

| The Advertiser | page 9 |

Exercise is good for us. Everybody, whether sporty or not, can find some exercise they can enjoy. Just because you did not enjoy sport at school does not necessarily mean you can’t have fun exercising as an adult. Some people are naturally good at any sport they take part in. For others it may not come so easily, or maybe you have been put off structured exercise ever since by ‘failing’ at sport at an early age. Turning to exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle rather than a competitive event is the main goal for those less driven by medals, personal bests, leagues or club trophies. It is OK not to compete with others, only with ourselves. It’s about you – no one else! Exercise doesn’t have to mean an instructor shouting at you in a class, it can be about: ● Mowing the lawn ● Walking to the shop ● Digging the garden ● Cleaning the windows I have changed my views over the 13 years I have been training people. Whether it’s aerobic training, weight training, functional training or fun circuits, the main aim of the majority of those I see is to increase movement and encourage a less sedentary lifestyle. ● Exercise is about replicating movement. Our body moves to allow us to do activities. The activities we do now may not be anything like we would have done 100 years ago, so we have to find other ways to keep our fitness level up and our weight under control. By doing so we can boost physical health and psychological wellbeing. Fortunately food is plentiful and with such choice it is hard not to sit and eat all day long! If we are to remain healthy, strong and mobile we must move more. Getting yourself moving in any way you can is fabulous for your health. Whether gardening, dancing, washing the car or doing the housework, we are using our muscles, getting our blood flowing and burning calories. So if you are not the sporty type you can still benefit from exercise. It doesn’t have to be a stressful experience - find the fun in what you do each day. ● Think of washing the car as fun exercise with a positive end result – not a chore ● Think of walking the dog as a way to get your steps up – not a bind ● Think of tidying the house as a full body workout – not a thankless task By changing our mindset we can incorporate movement into our everyday living. Or we can find a more structured exercise that we enjoy. If you find you don’t like it, try something else. Avoid being put off by others. It’s OK to only be competitive with yourself. Find an activity that is right for YOU! You never know it might lead to greater things! Rich Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004

Wine Made Easy!

Australian Wines

This month is focused on Australian wines. This huge country seems to have an ability to find perfect growing conditions for most types of grapes. Consequently, they produce wines that have the same names as the classic European (Old World) wines. The early years of wine exporting to the UK seems to have been Chardonnay and Shiraz dominated and these varied in taste and quality. The Shiraz got a name for being a strong flavoured wine and the Chardonnay became a slurping white wine. Today, the choice is just enormous, with Sauvignon blanc, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon all competing for shelf space with the earlier wines. To help you in selecting Australian wines, I went to the local supermarkets and picked a selection of wines to try over the course of the month. I started with a pair of Shiraz wines, Barossa Ink and McGuigan Shiraz - Family Release. The Barossa lives up to the name of Ink - very dark red and very strong in flavour and tannin. Black cherry and dark chocolate flavours are easy to get, but as I don’t like chocolate, this put me off. This is one for those who enjoy such a strongly flavoured wine. The McGuigan on the other hand is much softer and gentle in its approach. Still a good red colour and the plum and dark cherry flavours you would expect and with a gentle spice hit to finish. You would not think they came from the same grape. Still with the red wines, I spotted a bottle of wine from the cricketer Ian Botham, who loves his wine so much he invests and partners with various wine makers. This one is called the All Rounder, no doubt a hint at his cricketing past. Fortunately, this Cabernet Sauvignon lives up to the name. It is a lovely mid red colour and has red cherry and black berry flavours, plus a little spice. This is a well balanced and easy drinking wine. In Tesco, I found an unusual labelled wine with GSM in large letters. This turns out to be Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre, from the McClaren Vale region. Now these three grapes also make up one of my favourites, the French Rhone wines, so I had to see how this compared. The result is a lovely red, with nice flavours of dark berries and a hint of spice and a medium depth of flavours makes this very drinkable, just like the French Rhone wines. Over at Aldi, you can get a Hardy’s Merlot which like the GSM above delivers classic Merlot taste of plum and red berry, it is another easy drinking wine, so not too much tannin or spice to hit your taste buds, which appeals to more wine drinkers. The only one missing is Pinot Noir wines, which I could only find in specialist wine stores or on line. Funny thing is that New Zealand is producing many Pinot Noir offerings from both the North and South Islands, but that is for another month, as are the white wines of Australia. As always, please drink responsibly and enjoy your wines this month. Ian Lloyd Wine Enthusiast ian@getwine.co.uk

First Steps Consultancy Ruth 07969 451 366 My name is Ruth and I am the owner of First Steps Consultancy, you will have seen my blogs over the last few months. I have been working with children and their families for the last 16 years. I have enjoyed supporting parents with young children, who were struggling with common problems, such as sleep challenges, breastfeeding difficulties, unwanted behaviour, fussy eating and potty training. I have completed advanced training in sleep and behaviour management, breastfeeding and constipation and enuresis problems, and I have used these to support many families over the years. I have two children of my own, Jack who is nearly eight, and Emily who is four. Being a Mum and facing the challenges we all face through parenting has made me empathetic, nonjudgemental and supportive when helping other people, as I have experienced it myself. If you are experiencing problems with your child, please get in touch, I can help you to smooth out the stresses and put you back in control. Where you belong! I believe that parenting can, and should be a positive experience, whatever the challenges you are facing, and I really enjoy supporting families so that they can feel more in control and make a difference to their family and ultimately their well being and peace of mind.

War Memorial Trust Remembrance Exhibition The War Memorial Trust and the Royal British Legion will be holding its eleventh exhibition of war time memorabilia in the Old Town Hall to reflect on the impact that wars have made on local families. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War as well as the 75th anniversary of D-Day. If you have any memorabilia, stories, photographs or any documents that you would like to share concerning the events leading up to the outbreak of WW2 and its aftermath in 1939, or the events of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy in 1944, please bring them to the Faringdon Town Council offices (in the Pump House on the Market Place) before Wednesday, 6th November; the office is open between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. If you have any interesting memorabilia concerning other conflicts please bring them along. We would be particularly interested in stories and memorabilia on how WW2 affected families on the ‘home front’; e.g. blackout, rationing, evacuees, daily life, etc. Any precious items that you may think to be too valuable to exhibit can be photocopied and the Trust will take care to return original items to their owners. The exhibition will be open to the public from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th November, and after the Remembrance Day ceremony on Sunday 10th until 1:00 pm. Volunteers who would like to help in manning the exhibition should contact the Council Offices on 01367 240281.

Our 7 autumn tips on how to prepare your garden for Winter With a change in season comes a change in the colours in your garden. There is also a fair amount that needs doing to keep it at its best for viewings and getting ready for Spring. We have come up with a few hints and tips to get your garden through the cooler months. 1. Tidy the greenhouse - this is both an inside and outside job as you will have a whole year of dust, pollen and rain to get off the glass. Normal washing up liquid will do the job on the glass along with a good sweep of the flooring. You may also want to use a mild disinfectant on the inside surfaces but make sure you ventilate the greenhouse for a couple of days. Use this opportunity to fix or replace any broken glass. 2. Clean out the pots - any pots that are going to be standing empty over winter can also be cleaned and stacked away for spring. Do not throw any broken ones as they can be used for drainage. 3. Tidy and turn over the borders - the annuals can be dug up and composted and the perennials cut back. With the ground still warm and soft, it can also be a time to move plants or thin out overcrowded borders. 4. Revive the lawn - after a summer of being played and BBQ’ed on, the lawn may be looking a bit tired in places. After what will be one of the last cuts of the season, rake out any old grass cuttings and remove any moss. In areas of high usage, the soil can be compacted so aerate with a garden fork. 5. Clear out compost - with falling leaving and all the digging out and cutting back you will be doing, you will have lots to put on the compost. But before you do, use up whatever is left, give the container a clean and then add this season’s garden waste. 6. Cover ponds - ideally with netting as any garden material falling in the water will start to decompose which can turn the water foul and block any filters or pumps. 7. Maintain tools - before everything gets put back in the shed, make sure any tools with blades have been sharpened. The ‘digging’ tools can be washed, dried and treated with oil to prevent any metal rusting. Whilst traditionally gardens are at their best in the spring and summer, taking the time to tidy and cut back in the autumn shows any potential buyer how easy it is to maintain and enjoy your garden all year round. Artist of the month

Faringdon Information Centre is pleased to welcome Jan Fennelly as October’s Artist of the month. Jan has always loved glass, no other substance has the same ability to transmit and reflect light and colour the way glass does. She loves the depth and variety of colour and texture that can be achieved using glass. Jan started working with glass by making leaded-glass panels about 20 years ago then 10 years ago she was lucky enough to have a studio built in the garden, which enabled her to get a kiln so she could also experiment with fused glass. This opened up whole new avenues of possibilities, she doesn’t believe that she will ever stop being excited by learning about and making glass art - no two pieces ever turn out the same, each is unique. Come along to Faringdon Information Centre in the Pump House open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm and Saturdays 9:30am to 1 pm.

Roberts Reflections!

Hello and welcome to Autumn reflections. As I write in early September, even the House Martins are moving South, away to Africa. I’ll be very happy to welcome “our” pair of nesting Martins in 2020 with some extra accommodation fitted under our soffit boarding, by our roofing company. Two swift nest boxes have also been added - both RSPB-sourced boxes. I look forward to seeing what the birds think of them next year. Swifts, House Martins and Swallows will normally be long gone by the time you read this. The latest these birds have been recorded migrating in the same order in Hampshire, has been 4th Oct, 21st and 27th November. This past Summer, with the much warmer weather, encouraged the rise in blue-green algae blooms, this increased the risk of potentially fatal poisoning in dogs this year. Concentrations of such algae, looking like green or greenish-brown scum, from any body of water, will cause vomiting and diarrhoea, nausea & drooling, disorientation, difficult or laboured breathing, seizures and blood in faeces. Eventually terminal liver damage occurs through that early toxin ingestion. Keep an look out for what they are drinking. Studies from over one thousand cat owners who were able to observe their cats outdoors for at least 3 hours a day, showed it was widely thought that cats eat grass when feeling ill but only a quarter of the study cats were actually sick. However 91% of the study owners said that their cat didn’t appear ill before eating grass! However the study authors feel that this is a reflection of wild and large cat behaviour to rid themselves of intestinal parasites, as do primates in the wild. This encourages a tolerable level of internal parasitism. This has been advised for some time now, why not cultivate grass indoors for your cat or cats to chew on – and allow them to express this innate behaviour? I wonder if anyone has signed the change.org online petition that calls for bereavement leave from work following the death of a family pet. That must apply to all of us, pet owners, including every member of the veterinary “family” worldwide. Perhaps your thinking along the lines of a strong cup of milky coffee after digesting these facts and all the talk of Brexit and farming? Its a fact that a dairy cow with a typical 50L daily milk yeald gives 2kg of fat, 1.6kg of milk protein, 2.5kg of lactose, 0.065 Kg of Calcium, 0.05kg of Phosphorus and 0.008gm of Magnesium. 50L of classic milk weighs 51.45 Kg, that’s a huge amount to carry around udderneath, even with 2 or 3 times a day milking! The % of fat in standard milk is therefore 3.89 % or less than 4%. For perspective, this puts fresh, whole milk in the same % fat league as white bread, milk puddings, custards, whole flavoured yogurts and plain, unsalted popcorn! The pressure for each individual cow in the herd to be able to fulfil her genetic lactation potential, requires smart farm management, complemented by equally smart farm veterinary input, good quality forage and everything necessary to enrich the cow’s environment and feeling of wellbeing – even down to what music’s playing in the milking parlour! Cow moo’d music – nothing less!

See you next month! Robert Elliott

MOTOR SERVICES

Swan Hill Garage, Townsend Road, Shrivenham, Wilts, SN6 8HR

You really are what you eat! Put simply what you take in should equal what your body requires to enable you to function every day, this includes repair and regeneration, breathing, sleeping, sweaty, exercising, thinking and moving. A larger person will require more food to function and maintain a constant weight than a slighter person. If you eat more than your body requires then you gain weight and if you eat the wrong types of food then you can become unwell. It is therefore very important to consume the right foods so that you get the correct nutrients that your body needs. Proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals play a role in keeping us; our cells, tissues, organs, bones, hormones, brain etc in tip top shape. They do not work alone but work in unison in complex ways which is why it is so important to eat a balanced diet rather than cutting out one or other of the food groups. A balanced diet will contain all the following food groups: Fruit and vegetables Starchy foods – bread, rice, pasta, potatoes Dairy or alternative Oils and spreads (sparingly) Beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat By eating a balanced diet most of us should get sufficient vitamins and minerals to satisfy the bodies daily requirements. Are you getting a balanced diet? Do you struggle to know what you should be eating or how to change your eating habits to achieve a balanced diet? Give me a call to have a chat or sign up to attend my course, details below.
