This Months Cover Al Hayball derives much inspiration from the creatures and coastline around his Dorset home. His wildlife drawings let the animal's character shine through, whether it be captured in the way the eyes are drawn or that little smile he includes in some of his subjects. In a departure from his usual naive way of painting, Al has taken a change of direction and now portrays wildlife, in this unique style of graphite, featuring hares and his 'muse', Tilly the

Whiplington Lurcher! Using a range of pencils, on Bockingford watercolour paper, his priority is to capture the personality and essence of the individuals he chooses to portray. The movement created in the drawings relates a depth of quirky realism, that enables the observer to view the scenes as if they were leaping from the surface of the paper! Al says, "I am really enjoying this new way of working and I’m looking forward to taking on new animal subjects'. Al has always had a vivid imagination and sense of humour, from his school days when he would doodle in the margins of his exercise-books, to the evenings in the smokey old Bristolian pubs his dad would frequent on 'darts' night, where you would see him sat in the corner scribbling 'caricatures' of all the locals, very much inspired by Scarfe and Steadman. visit:www.facebook.com/alanhayball www.ahayball.co.uk

WHO’S NEXT?

Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Our packed-out September meeting was delighted to welcome Stefan Thomas, author of Business Networking for Dummies and Instant Networking and renowned speaker. Stefan shared with us 4 main points to remember when we network: Grab People’s Attention. You can’t tell people everything about what you do in 60 seconds. Your aim should be to grab people’s attention so that they want to find out more about you. Do this by selecting certain parts of your business to talk about and focus on, what people will want to buy rather than what you do. Prepare. Make sure you prepare what you are going to say ahead of time and make it applicable to the group you are talking to. Write it down and try recording it , on your smartphone, to make sure you will keep within the allotted time. Playing it back to yourself before the event helps you remember what you want to say. It Doesn’t End There. After the networking meeting, keep in touch with people you have met through social media, e-mail newsletters and – still crucial – the telephone. Don’t keep in touch by selling what you are offering – be genuinely interested in the people you met and what they do – help them if you can. Stefan shared the analogy of DFS – everybody knows DFS sells sofas as we are constantly being reminded about the DFS sale. Don’t Assume. It is easy to look at somebody’s badge and decide that they won’t be one of your customers – they are too small or do not fall into your customer group. However, you never know who they are connected to or what role they may have in the future. Remember as Stefan says “Every big opportunity starts with a little conversation”. There are lots of opportunities to talk to Stefan about this further. He runs a monthly Networking Group, The Networking Retreat and we are delighted to say, he has already signed up to come to our 2nd October meeting as a club member. Business Update This month’s update has a distinct tourism focus, which has a profound effect on the town and the environment we work and live in. First, progress is continuing on a strategy to effectively harness the fantastic offerings of Faringdon and to raise the profile of our tourism offering. The Vale of White Horse District Council with South Oxfordshire District Council are looking at the way they promote all that southern Oxfordshire has to offer visitors through their website. One of the initiatives is to make all local accommodation businesses aware of the opportunity to advertise for free on-line, so we would urge you to contact them at tourism@southandvale.gov.uk to discuss the information required, whether that be for a new offering or a refresh of an existing listing. As you probably know, 2018 is the 800th anniversary of Faringdon’s Market Charter and this will be widely publicised beyond the county, once again raising our town’s profile. More information about what is planned will be announced by the Town Council and in this column very soon. This will present an opportunity for all businesses to think about how they can profit from this additional interest. Vale4Business is to host its inaugural bi-annual business forum on Tuesday 10th October, focusing on skills and retaining staff. There will be plenty of opportunities for businesses to discuss issues that many are finding, in addressing the skills gap. Please visit http://www.vale4business.com/v4b-businessforum-attracting-retaining-staff/ for more information and registering your interest in this event. The Chamber of Commerce has organised a private tour of Kelmscott Manor followed by an update on its future plans. Anyone involved in the arts or tourism sector that may be interested should contact secretary@faringdonchamberofcommerce.co.uk as there are a few places left for this visit on Thursday 12th October.

THE OLD CROWN COACHING INN FARINGDON

Walters If you’ve been into the shop you may have seen that one entire corner is taken up with a selection of independent whisky bottlings. These are whiskies which have not been bottled by the owners of the distilleries they are produced at but by companies who have bought either spirit or matured whisky direct from the distillery or a broker. We’re big fans of these ‘indie’ bottlings and whether you are looking for a different take on your usual dram, a small batch or single cask offering, or a good value, quality whisky you can find some real gems amongst them. One of the most famous independent bottlers is undoubtedly Gordon and MacPhail (G&M) from Elgin. Established in 1895 as a family grocers who stocked teas, coffees, wines and whisky, their good relationships with various distilleries has helped them to build an incredible stock holding of whisky. John Urquhart (an apprentice to the original owners) had an excellent knowledge of whisky production and maturation which has been added to by subsequent generations of his family, and when combined with the vast resource of stocks available has produced an enviable collection of whiskies that is virtually unique. The G&M mantra is ‘the wood makes the whisky’ and it is their intimate knowledge of each distillery’s characteristics that guides them when matching the spirit to their own carefully selected casks, the ones they feel will best enhance the flavours, and they are aided in this process by a ‘Liquid Library’, that contains samples of whiskies going back many years (They call it a Liquid Library – I call it heaven on earth! I was lucky enough to visit it once and tasted some amazing whiskies, including a 1938 Mortlach that was very special indeed). It is this attention to detail that shines through in the various G&M bottlings. The great value malts from the Connoisseurs Choice series are an excellent introduction to the unique styles of individual distilleries, from all the regions while the Cask Strength range lets you try the whisky exactly as it tastes straight from the cask. The Distillery Label series, where the distilleries featured each have their own specific label design, contains some of my own personal favourites of Scapa, Longmorn and Strathisla, and these also appear in the ‘Rare Vintage’ range of whiskies that are from 21 years old to 50 years plus! Along with these you can find whiskies from closed distilleries, the renowned Speymalt Macallan, unusual expressions such as a Bunnahabhain peated whisky or single cask whiskies that have been finished in different cask types, and even a 50 year old whisky for less than £700! It looks increasingly as if greater demand for whisky, and an increased willingness by the distilleries to release whiskies that go against type, means there will be less casks available to independent bottlers in the future so explore them now while you can. Faringdon United Reformed Church Wednesday 5:30pm and 7:30pm Thursday 9:30am *Morning Group*

Louise In June 2012 I found out I needed life changing surgery. Doctors said I had to be healthier and fitter for a double mastectomy I needed in prevention of Cancer. Surgery would be 14 hours long, so was advised for a quicker recovery with less complications I needed to lose weight. I couldn’t do it alone so turned to Slimming World for help and support, joining my local group in October 2012, where I was made to feel very welcome and reassured I could do it. I hit my personal achievement target weight, losing 3 stone in one year. Following the 3 Extra Easy steps, eating as much Free foods as I liked, without weighing, measuring, counting or any fuss (step 1). Still enjoying Wine most weekends (step 3). I had the surgery in October 2013 and was much healthier and fitter. Whilst recovering I started my training to became a Slimming World Consultant, opening my very own group in January 2014, to help and support others on their journey. Shortly after this I lost my mum who had fought cancer for 10 years, but carried on as I didn't want to let my members down. Three years on I gave up full time work, to focus on my groups in Faringdon, including opening a morning group, and taking over a group in Highworth, enabling me to help even more people on their journey to their ideal weight. Slimming World is not a diet, because it’s not restrictive due to all the free food you can eat anytime of the day or night. Slimming World’s Food optimises a healthy eating plan, which allows slimmer's to satisfy their appetite on a wide range of healthy, filling foods like fruit and veg, lean meat, fish, pasta, rice, eggs and more. It means you can lose weight without going hungry. Traditional goodies can be enjoyed by Slimming World members, too: “When people join our groups they soon realise that we’re not about dieting and deprivation. Instead our members make life-long changes to the way that they shop, cook and eat and learn how to make healthy choices so they can still enjoy treats, like chocolate, sweets, wine and more, in moderation as well.” To find out more about Food Optimising or join the Faringdon Slimming World group, which is held every Wednesday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm or Thursday Mornings at 9.30am Faringdon United Church, Thursday 6pm at Southfield Junior School, Highworth call Louise on 07717 681939 or simply pop along. When Breath Becomes Air By Paul Kalanithi

It’s part of our Western condition to be extremely squeamish around the subject of death. Eastern cultures, with their beliefs in Nirvana and the circle of life are more forthcoming in their acceptance of the subject than we are. We – and I am just as guilty of this as everyone else – often think that something as necessary as making sure your Will is in order is ‘tempting fate’, and making funeral plans is ‘morbid’ talk. I’m broaching the subject here because I recently read ‘When Breath Becomes Air’, and it has left me feeling philosophical about the treatment and acceptance of death in our culture, and of what it means to face death as we face life – wholeheartedly. For those of you who are unaware of the book, it’s a powerful and poignant autobiography by an extraordinary writer named Paul Kalanithi. At the age of 36, and just about finished with ten years training as a neurosurgeon, Kalanithi was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. The book is the story of his journey to and beyond diagnosis. It’s not a book for the faint-hearted. Indeed, I had to steal myself to read it, knowing of the subject matter through news reports. Kalanithi’s widow Lucy had done the rounds on news channels, and touched the hearts and souls of millions around the world.

*STAFF REQUIRED* SENIOR STYLIST &

QUALIFIED BEAUTY THERAPIST

Kalanithi had the soul of a poet. His writing had that rare quality in writers who you know are writing from the very centre of their being. Indeed, he mentions a point in his teens where he was undecided about what he wanted to do with his life – torn between literature and medicine. This book has him combining the two with clarity, vision and heart. There is no happy ending. And the book had me questioning, our need for one.

BATHROOM SHOWROOM Open to the Public & Trade

We know life is messy – it’s the essence of human nature that we are complex beings, often thrust into testing and trying situations. This doesn’t diminish us. It’s our trials that allow us to face the very core of life. Kalanithi faced death with all of the courage and integrity that he showed in life. The world was deprived of his talents too soon. This book will stand as his memorial for all time – and your life may change as a result of his teachings.

October Ramblings!

| The Advertiser | page 9 |

Welcome to another month of ramblings The same week as the 123 Pesticides Report on Children’s Fruit (some being linked to cognitive development), given out by a government scheme aimed at promoting healthy eating habits, the Soil Association came out with their Organic September campaign and #ChooseOrganic on social media. As Kate Arnell, TV presenter and Soil Association Ambassador states: “Once upon a time, all food was organic. It’s not something that is a luxury. It’s just food, grown as it should be.” It has been estimated that 30% more animal and plant species are found on organic farms. Pesticides could become used less often as more research goes into organic cultivation and husbandry. Organic cheese is often the same price as branded non-organic; eating local organic food when it’s in season may give good value for money (box schemes). I personally enjoy organic milk, non-homogenised – including the naughty full-cream versions, harking back to organic roots of my wanton youth when milking Jersey cows at a tender age for several years before University! According to the Pesticide Action Network UK, for an extra cost of 1p per child per day, the government scheme would enable ALL the fruit given to 4 to 6 years old children to be organic. Being outside as often as possible this time of year, I regularly have the privilege of seeing small or larger flocks of house-martins, sand martins and swallows flying over the sheep field and the cattle in the adjacent field in the Village. Swifts have gone South a lot earlier. It seems that some swallows may fly across to the Middle East but the classic route to Southern Africa will take them about 6 weeks to complete. They migrate and feed during daylight, covering about 200 miles a day. Another species we will see in a little more abundance, passing back through, are the Red Admiral butterflies returning to central Europe. However, as the climate changes, more are being classified as the very small population of “resident” butterflies. When they do travel in from Europe in May and June, they can fly as far as the Orkney and Shetland Islands. No hand luggage, of course. As our Summer visitors leave, many species of our seabirds are already far out at sea - birds such as Welsh shearwaters fly off to the coasts of South America – many winter visitors are preparing for their travels here too – redwings, fieldfares, certain swans, ducks and geese included. I’m also given to understand that robins have a small seasonal change – those from Scandinavia, central Europe and Russia join our largely resident UK population. A small percentage (mainly female) UK robins fly South to France, Spain and Portugal. Robins are also different in that both sexes will sing to defend their territories outside the breeding season, with the songs being quite similar and wearing the same colour wonsies! So back to our amazing, hard-working, under-pressure, UK bees. I’ve yet to see data that shows the estimated population size for this year. One client pointed out that the unintentional “splat-ometer” of the windscreens and bonnets of cars records far fewer incidents of insects in general meeting a rapid fate as we drive around. So, have those summer visitors raised chicks less successfully this year? Scottish honeys have shown antimicrobial activities equal to that of commercial ‘super-honeys’ (Manuka) and may be useful in the ongoing fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, scientists at the James Hutton Institute and Queen Margaret University have found. The study is available online from the journal LWT - Food Science and Technology via ScienceDirect. Dr Gordon McDougall, a research scientist based at the Environmental and Biochemical Sciences of the James Hutton Institute and co-author of the study, said: “We compared the antimicrobial action of six Scottish honeys and a well-known commercial ‘super-honey’ against antibiotic-resistant Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. “The high antimicrobial effects of some Scottish honeys confirmed previous work by Dr Lorna Fyfe, senior lecturer in Microbiology and Immunology at QMU, but in this study we noted that the most effective honeys had novel components. More research is needed to confirm the mechanism of action of the new components but this work provides potential targets in the search for new antimicrobial agents to augment existing treatments.” It has always concerned me about Manuka-tree sourced honey running low! Medical and veterinary uses are in front-line treatments for certain wounds and for certain bacteria, which include the resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa that we can find in serious eye, ear and skin infections. Another very good reason to look after our pollinating insects! We are in an in-between time for seasonal peaks in veterinary toxicity and disease; I went to town on tick prevention last month, we’ve already had vine fruit, mushroom/toadstool and chocolate poisoning, so it’s going to be plum stones and wasps, I suppose. So, whatever you’re doing and wherever you take your family companions, have a safe and enjoyable Autumn. See you next month! Rob.. The Cheese Man! Known as either Syrah or Shiraz, you can generally tell a person’s devotion to this red grape variety by what they refer to the said grape as. Those referring to it a Syrah enjoy the smoky, herbaceous mineral driven version of the grape, famously honed in the region of the Rhone Valley, France. Others who find themselves synonymous with the term Shiraz are seduced by the sweet, chocolatey primary fruits often supplied from sunny regions of Australia. Legend has it that Syrah/Shiraz originated from a vine known as Allobrogica that was cultivated in the Northern Rhone by the Gallic tribe the Allobroges, during the Roman Empire. This vine was revered for its fine quality and signature tarry flavour. Over time, this vine evolved into the modern-day vine we know as Syrah. Syrah was introduced into Australia by James Busby, a Scotsman who settled in New South Wales in 1824. In 1832, during a visit to Europe, he collected cuttings of more than 400 different grape vines, of which Syrah became one of the most successful, adapting well to the hotter and drier climate of its new home. Shiraz is grown in virtually every grape growing region of Australia, being most significant in the area of the Barossa Valley, South Australia. There is a wide range of regional styles which Oz Clarke describes as: Barossa Valley: tremendously rich, chocolatey, verging on the over-ripe, but magnificent, sun-baked McLaren Vale: rich and chocolatey Clare Valley: leaner but packed with dark fruit Padthaway and Wrattonbully: both with wines full of damson fruit and chocolate richness Coonawarra: dark and peppery Hunter Valley: ripe plum fruit and a bit ‘meaty’ North-East Victoria: dark and chocolatey Victoria (cooler regions): wonderfully scented damson rich wines Western Australia: cool but intense dark plum flavours (Margaret River & southwards)

Furthermore, hot regions (such as the Barossa Valley and the Hunter Valley) produce soft, earthy, spicy style that develops leather and caramel with age. Cooler regions (Margaret River, Western Victoria) produce a leaner, more peppery style. These styles can be blended across regions, as often seen in the likes of wines labelled ‘South Eastern Australia – bearing in mind that this region is big enough to cover the bulk of Europe! Berton Vineyard Winemaker’s Reserve Metal Label Shiraz 2015 South Eastern Australia 14.5% abv £10.99 Selected for its deep colour and intense flavour, this rich, dark red Shiraz has lifted aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and delicately integrated oak. The generous and concentrated palate is velvety with firm tannins and flavours of ripe cherry, plum and mocha over hints of smoky oak.

How does our body respond to our aging? As we get older, our skin can become more wrinkled as it loses elasticity, dries and thins. Our bones can be more visible as we store less fat beneath our skin (or our body gets fatter as we eat the same amount as we have always done but we become more sedentary!) and our bones and muscle become weaker. Our posture, flexibility and strength can reduce too. However, we can slow down the negative changes that occur as we age by: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Making the right lifestyle choices can make a massive difference to our health as we age. There are some scientifically backed anti-aging lifestyle choices that really seem to work, as well as helping us to look and feel our best. The important ones are exercise, eating the right foods, getting the right amount of sleep and maintaining a positive attitude. Exercise is one of the best ways to prevent the loss of mobility that often accompanies old age. It builds bone mass, muscle mass, improves heart efficiency and increases blood flow to the brain. Eating the right foods will give your body the nutrients it needs to perform at its optimum level for longer. Eating healthily helps reduce inflammation in the body, which helps to prevent disease. Quality nutrition aids repair and can reduce the impact of chronic diseases. One study has shown that a diet rich in omega 3 oils may help preserve your telomeres, (telomeres are the ends of your chromosomes that shrink with age) and thus slow down the aging process! Sleep has been shown in some research to have an effect on skin aging, pigmentation and elasticity. Those enjoying quality sleep were more able to recover from skin stressors such as sun and environmental toxins. The amount of sleep a person needs depends on their age; adults are recommended to get 7 to 8 hours per night. Positive attitude! Some research suggests that positive people, those with a sense of purpose, can live an average of 7.5 years longer. You are as young as you feel! Live a life full of love, laughter, compassion for others. Avoid taking things or yourself too seriously! Celebrate growing older but try to stay young at heart. Keep on learning new things, keep stimulating your brain and have fun! Stay young! Whatever you are looking to achieve, whether it is weight loss, health, fitness or living a longer life it always comes back to improving the basics – MOVEMENT, FOOD, SLEEP and ATTITUDE towards everyday life! The Rookery Branches Out.

THE ROOKERY COFFEEHOUSE

There have been developments at The Rookery this last year as we grow into our fourth year of serving our community. The wonderful vegetarian coffee shop on the ground floor is now under the wing of Rob and Sarah of Coffeesmith who are taking it from strength to strength, expanding the original menu and offering more locally produced foods. Celtic Magpie Hair, the beautiful biophilic hair studio housed on the first floor of The Rookery, continues to lead the way for the profession in environmentally sound practice with owner, Shane, being invited to join the advisory “All Party Parliamentary Group” who are committed to creating a legal structure to ensure best practice across the industry. Shane has been able to take time out from the Faringdon studio to attend parliament, entrusting the studio to Kirsty Carpenter, who celebrates her first year with Celtic Magpie Hair in October. Myar, senior apprentice, joined the team in May, we’re delighted to support a local woman in gaining skills that form a solid foundation for a career in hairdressing. The studio has become so popular that from October 19th we will also be opening every Thursday. Flying on the wings of this popularity, Celtic Magpie Hair is opening a second salon in Windermere in the Lake District in January 2018. Having passed the coffee shop over in April, Lesley’s returned to her roots in the North West where she has been working with Shane in preparation for the opening of The Rookery Windermere, Lesley continues her passion for herbal medicine in the guise of “Sophiology” which encompasses the delicious organic herbal teas served in The Rookery Coffee Shop, traditional western herbal remedies, natural herbal skincare, homewares, gifts and greeting cards sourced from and inspired by nature. A small range of the most popular Sophiology products will be available in the hair studio from September, growing to include more of the Sophiology range over the winter months. If you fancy trying your hand at making your own herbal products, Lesley will be hosting workshops at The Rookery Faringdon at the end of November. For more information visit Sophiology on Facebook @sophiologywise As the days get shorter and the fruit of the fields and forest cry out to be harvested, it is with great joy and gratitude to all of our customers past and present that we celebrate the past year in The Rookery and plan for the year ahead.

Claire Marie: 07774 510599 As the darks nights are drawing in! That only means one thing for vintage goth shadows! Yep you guessed right, Halloween! It's time to get prepared for, as we call it Spooktober month!! VGS has lots of unusual quirky items in for everyone to wear this Halloween. We have a manic month of amazing exciting but VERY spooky events! Dare to investigate Folly Tower on Friday 13th October! Join the UK's leading Female paranormal investigator Claire Marie and the Shadows of the Night team as we kick start our Spooktober month with the Folly Tower. Are you brave enough to delve into the history of the Tower, ground and woods below it? Begin the evening with a 2hr paranormal investigation in the Tower itself, with spiritual and scientific experiments as we explore the unknown. Who's there, who's bones are buried under the ground, what battles took place here? So much history lies in the Folly trees and under the hill, the Tower itself may tell the tales throughout our evening. Following the investigation we head back down the hill to London Street VGS, for some light refreshments and a comfort break, before heading into the dark unknown. At the rear of the shop is our beautifully created Victorian themed séance room, with green and black velvet flocked walls, red lamps and furniture to suit the surroundings, sit in our 100 year old chair and let your mind wander into the darker side of London Street and the surrounding areas, as Claire-Marie offers you a unique Seance experience. On the 21st October, We have The Ghosts & Legends of Faringdon. We will take you back in time and indulge you with spooky tales of the paranormal which will leave you hanging on the edge of your seat! If that is not enough for you, Friday 27th October, we are doing a haunted pub crawl! Yes you heard right a Haunted Pub Crawl! Follow the ghostly tales and murderous history of Faringdon whilst necking a pint with our team, from pub to pub as the tales get darker and the ales get heavier and words a little droopier! Starting at The Folly on London Street, the Wheatsheaf before a walk around the church grounds where we may see the headless ghost of Hampton Pye.... Continuing on to the Crown and its deadly past, then the Bell with its paranormal activity.... stopping in the market square for some hanging tales before entering the Red Lion for a mini séance, then onto the Swan to see some spirits and back into town to the world famous Volunteer to end the night of fright and ales! The finale of spooktober month ends with Halloween we are hosting a Spectacular Houdini Style Seance!! For the first time ever I will be holding the annual and world famous Houdini Séance. The Houdini séance has been a Halloween tradition since the first anniversary of his death . The magician died at the age of 52 on October 31, 1926 from peritonitis -- an internal infection -- as the result of a ruptured appendix. Shortly before his death, Houdini made a pact with Bess that if he could, he would return and make contact with her from the other side, this séance has taken place by members of the Houdini family on this night continually to the present day. Tickets can be booked at www.shadowsofthenight.co.uk See you there guys!!

| The Advertiser | page 19 | What Next After A Disappointing Survey?

A disappointing survey report can easily put the brakes on a property transaction. Buyers can latch onto and focus on the seemingly negative comments of surveyor and if these cannot be resolved, there is the risk that the sale could fall through. To start with, it is worth having an understanding of what the main survey types are: 1. Survey level one: RICS Home Condition Report (HCR) - The RICS Condition Report describes the condition of the property, identifies any risks and potential legal issues and highlights any urgent defects. It uses simple ‘traffic light’ ratings to clearly identify the condition of the key elements of the property. 2. Survey level two: RICS HomeBuyer Report (HBR) - This is most suitable for conventional properties which are in reasonable condition. The report gives you more detailed information and provides the choice of either a survey or a survey & valuation. 3. Survey level three: RICS Building Survey - Essential for larger or older properties, or if you’re planning major works. The most comprehensive report provides you with an in-depth analysis of the property's condition and includes advice on defects, repairs and maintenance options. The very first thing to do is speak with or if possible, meet with the surveyor and go through the report together. The written word can often feel very cold and final. Having a conversation to fully understand the issues and their ramifications and remedies will give context and perspective to these and so help you make a much more informed decision. For example, if something has been highlighted as requiring “further investigation”, the surveyor can clarify what they mean and advise on who can provide additional reports. It is important that you maintain contact with the estate agent and seller throughout the process. In property, no news is rarely taken as good news. Ultimately, we are here to help find the common ground that enables the transaction to continue. Both directors of Waymark are qualified surveyors so they can help you with the technical details of your report. Most buyers purchase their property with the intention of making some changes or enhancements. Issues like window frames that need painting are obvious at the point of viewing. Damp to structural timbers or subsidence typically are not. The point being, the survey report should be used to identify the things that are hidden and not to beat the seller down on things that were already apparent. When it comes to getting additional reports or quotes for work, it pays to involve the seller. It makes sense to get two or three quotes and if practical be there with the seller so that you both understand the scope of the work. A decent tradesperson will have no issue with sending any quotes to both parties so that there is a level of impartiality. It is always a good idea to move quickly and gather everything you need as soon as possible to maintain the momentum and keep the transaction ‘warm’.
