All Saints' Bell Ringers remember one of our fallen On 11 August 2018, Faringdon bell ringers successfully completed a Quarter Peal to commemorate the death of Private Thomas Lardner, a local bell ringer who died fighting in World War I on 11 August 1918 aged 18. Thomas Lardner enlisted in Abingdon and joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment 2nd/7th Battalion, and his grave is commemorated at Tannay British Cemetery in Thiennes, France. Born in Buscot, Thomas was the only child of Thomas Lardner and Rose Lardner (née Frost) of Market Place, Faringdon and at the time of the 1911 Census was attending school and residing at Angels Inn (now Just Jacks), where his father was publican. Therefore, after the Quarter Peal, the ringers made sure to visit Just Jacks and sup some pints. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome a recent addition to our band. Peter Hunt moved from Lancashire into Faringdon in July and is enjoying the challenges that we occasionally set ourselves during our practices. At the time of writing, we are preparing to welcome would-be learners to the Tower during the Bank Holiday weekend, and we will have more news about this next month. But please, if you are interested in learning bell ringing and could not visit us on our Open Day, you can still drop in to any of our Sunday service ringing's 9.45–10.30am or Monday practices 7.30–9.00pm. Or you can contact us by email: faringdonringers@gmail.com.

The friendly and relaxed atmosphere of our meetings encourages collaboration rather than competition. Once the relationship has developed and trust exists then potential clients get recommended to you. An important element to business networking is the followup or one-to-one meeting where you can get, and give, more detail on the product or service being provided. Our next meeting is on Mon 3 Sep 18. It starts at 7.30 am in The Bell and lasts for about an hour and a half. There is no subscription fee just book your place on the website at https://fbbc-networking.co.uk Come and try business networking with FBBC
Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Due to circumstances beyond our control the July meeting of the Faringdon Business Breakfast Club (FBBC) had to be cancelled at short notice. Therefore, this month we thought it would be of benefit to describe the benefits of business networking and in particular how FBBC works. Official figures indicate that businesses of 0 – 9 employees account for 96% of businesses in the UK. That means there are a lot of us out there and we all must deal with the same functions of a large business who can afford to allocate dedicated staff to activities such as marketing, accounts, compliance and health and safety. Business networking is a means of finding mutual support as well as opportunities for generating growth. You will find most major business functions represented in most networking meeting so if you have a marketing problem you will probably be able to discuss it with an expert in the group. On average fifteen people attend FBBC meetings each month but each of them probably has a business contact list of over two hundred names giving a total ‘reach’ of three thousand. However, do not think that by turning up once to a networking meeting you will have access to another three thousand potential leads. You need to build relationships with other members of the networking group so that they can refer you with confidence to their contacts. FBBC is an ‘open’ group so we do not restrict attendance by the type of business you are in. Sometimes we will have three accountants at the same meeting!

V.I.P HAIR & BEAUTY STUDIO V.I.P Hair & Beauty Studio has now been open in Faringdon for the last 7 years, Becky Evers came from her previous position in Highworth, where she had been employed for 4 years. Becky had decided it was time to take the plunge, following her dreams and have her very own business! With the help of her husband Simon she opened VIP Hair & Beauty Studio in Faringdon, this was a very big step and as with any new business in the beginning, it had its fair share of ups and downs, worry and stress. Becky had to juggle her new venture, with having her two lovely boys to look after, Liam who is now 21, who’s followed in his father’s footsteps opting for a career in printing and Cameron now 17, who is very much into a career in the music industry! Becky is a fully qualified beauty therapist (a very good one if I do say so myself) her facials are unbelievably relaxing and a wonderful treat for body and mind. The treatments Becky offers in the salon are Facials, Massage, Waxing, Spray Tans, Nail Extensions, Lash Lifts, Tints and Extensions, Make Up (with lessons), Earring Piercing and a Quick Tan Sun Bed which will give you a wonderful golden tan in a remarkably quick amount of time, all ready for your holiday in the sun. Paige McDonald works along with Becky, who is also a fully qualified beauty therapist, specialising in the more permanent lash extensions, which can last up to 6 weeks and look stunning. All treatments are available for women and men… V.I.P Hair & Beauty Studio in Faringdon has Salon Manager and Senior Hair Stylist Hannah Bradbury, who is a well-loved, established local lady from Faringdon, with Deputy Manager Senior Hair Stylist Lisa Fisher and Hair Stylists Shannen Miller who is a specialist in Balmain hair extensions, last but defiantly not least Lucy Clarke who is the Junior Hair Stylist in the Salon. Becky has now opened two new V.I.P Hair & Beauty Studio’s in 2017. And has a total of 12 members of staff now working for her. A beautiful new V.I.P Hair & Beauty Studio in the lovely town of Royal Wootton Bassett, which opened in the Easter of 2017, with Manager and Senior Stylist Niamh Mason, Stephanie Read Hair Stylist and Hayley Wright, Beauty Therapist in the Salon. The third V.I.P Hair and Beauty Studio which Becky has now opened, in November 2017, is in Purton. Welcome to another ramble through the countryside and a few hot topics that should be brought to your attention. Heat has been a problem, from the farming viewpoint. It has brought forward by several weeks, the sweeter smaller hedgerow blackberries. Elderberries are starting to ripen early, but the essence of one particular gin, the sloe may well be ripening but are giving signs of water loss and look wrinkly, especially where the blackthorn bush itself is more shallow rooted and vulnerable. Clearly standing out from the dried grass and straggly green blades are docks and Ribwort plantains (lambs tongue) – all deeper rooted. One other plant brought to my attention is the Mugwort, which is coping well. It has uses with chicken dishes, and salads – Mugwort is a root-based perennial plant that's been shown to help fight serious diseases and ailments, from cancer to joint pain. The 12th August was World Elephant Day. Founded on that day in 2012 by Canadian Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand, World Elephant Day is dedicated to drawing awareness toward the ongoing threats facing these majestic animals. Whether it’s poaching, habitat destruction, or people encroaching into their territory, the danger to elephants worldwide has never been graver. World Elephant Day aims to bring together people from all over the world to form a global voice of citizens, policy-makers, politicians, and governments in support of conservation solutions that will make the world a safe place for elephants, wildlife, and habitat for future generations to cherish. Putting all these issues to one side for the moment, we’ve now had some rain, we’ve had a lunar eclipse and the closest the planet Mars has been to the Earth, a wonderful Family wedding and many amazing sunsets to accompany listening to the Proms on the radio. Our sheep are a mixture of the tough Welsh mountain breeds, despite water always being available, they’ve taken every opportunity to eat be-dewed grass and the apples on the drooping branches of hedgerow trees, overloaded with masses of small fruit. Please continue to leave water down for the travelling hedgehogs as they search for fallen fruit in the dry grass – and a tray of fresh water on the bird table! We see a large number of very hungry , small hedgehogs out and about in the daytime in an effort to extend hunting time to find fruit or a few slugs hidden away in damp places. We’re also going to put up some bird boxes from the RSPB to encourage our garden birds to nest. These will include a sparrow box and an extra house martin nest, to join the one that we are privileged to have already had built for us, up in the eaves. Incidentally, the RSPB are promoting a “Wild Sleepout”, a night under the stars as they say. “Sleeping outside can be thrilling. You could hear night-time sounds that you don’t notice from indoors. You’ll see stars, planets, satellites, planes and - if you’re lucky - shooting stars! And you’ll notice all kinds of wildlife that wakes up when it gets dark.” Bats, those hedgehogs, glow-worms….nightjars… “You could camp in a tent, under a blanket or even on a trampoline! Stay out for the whole night, or try just a few hours and experience nature after the sun goes down – it’s up to you.” Give it a go before the schools go back!! Until next month’s rambles: Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

1000 Although primarily a whisky specialist we also stock other spirits and it has been impossible to ignore the inexorable rise of gin, particularly as many fledgling whisky distilleries produce gin in the early days in order to raise immediate cash. Neutral alcohol, produced in the distilleries own stills or bought in, is flavoured by redistilling it with juniper and other botanicals to produce a traditional London Dry style gin which, crucially, unlike whisky does not need to be matured before bottling – saving a minimum of three years when a distillery has nothing available to sell and thus enabling numerous small craft distilleries to start up, Whilst I enjoy drinking gin I had never taken an interest in its production in the same way as I have with whisky but the rise of these craft distilleries and their artisan gins has somewhat changed things. One of the first such artisans to catch my attention was the Cotswolds Distillery, near Shipston-onStour. We visited first in the very early days when they were in the process of creating the botanical library that would form the basis of their gin, and they showed us the array of ingredients they were experimenting with on their small trial still, including the local lavender that is one of its vital ingredients. The Holstein copper still used for the gin distillation is a thing of beauty, and seeing the care that goes into the selection and slow maceration of the botanicals, followed by a carefully timed distillation, was fascinating. The gin itself is delightful - dry, citrusy and spicy and drinks well on its own, with tonic or in a cocktail. Another gin distillery that has inspired me is the Dyfi Distillery. Situated in the only UNESCO World Biosphere in Wales, this is a very special place and the majority of the botanicals are hand foraged locally. Working with what each season provides (even picking gorse flowers in the snow if need be!) distillation only takes place when it’s been possible to forage all the botanicals needed. It took 2 years of experimentation with different plants in varying locations to develop the initial recipe and each plant needs careful preparation. Then, after an overnight warm maceration in one of the small 100-litre stills, distillation takes place. The resulting smooth and distinctive gins are testament to the craft approach, and although it may not be amber it is definitely nectar! Pine and juniper are apparent in the Original Gin and these broaden out into a more complex array of flavours in the Pollination Gin. Also in the range is what is probably the first ever gin to be aged in a White Port cask. With a recipe specially designed to be complemented by the port cask, Hibernation gin includes wild fruits as well as the more classic botanicals and exemplifies small batch distilling at its best. Reiki has been part of my life for 12 years. I have witnessed it bringing about wonderful (sometimes quite dramatic) shifts in my own life and the lives of those I teach and treat. Whilst it is the subtlest of all the treatments I do, it is also the one that takes people to the deepest state of relaxation and inner transformation. So what exactly is Reiki? Reiki is a form of energy healing whose origins lie in ancient Tibet but was more recently rediscovered in 19th Century Japan by a curious Christian scholar named Doctor Usui. Usui was convinced that all humans possessed inherent healing abilities, they just needed a way to unlock them. This belief propelled him on a long quest of study and contemplation which culminated in finding Reiki. Reiki, translated from the Japanese, means “spiritually guided, universal life-force energy,” in other words, Reiki provides a way of channeling this incredible creative energy we live within (call it God, Allah, Mother Earth or Universal Energy - its all one and the same thing) and using it to heal both the self and others. By re-aligning us into the natural flow of “life-force energy”, blocks naturally fall away and we can become our most authentic, loving selves, which feels amazing! If you’re a skeptic you might be hearing all this as esoteric “mumbo-jumbo” and I don’t blame you. The problem in the West is that we don’t have a technical language to talk about these things in a way that sounds solid and credible. Concepts of health and the body are harnessed by modern medicine and science. If we were in China, everyone would understand the word “Chi”, but in the west we just have this word “energy” which sounds vague and hokey. The reality is that all living things have an energy field connecting them to everything around them. You might be familiar with the experience of meeting someone and immediately either feeling a sense of connection, or a discomfort and an instinct to move away. This is because all beings vibrate with the emotions and thoughts they hold, this creates an aura which is connected to the physical body. Like antennae your energy field interacts with other peoples and gives you valuable information. Reiki is powerful because it works both on the physical body and the aura around it. That is why it creates such a sense of emotional and mental peace, why it feels so “deep.” I’ll sign off by saying that ultimately Reiki is only fully understood through direct experience, and often only reaches people through an instinctive inner nudge. The amount of times I have had people turn up for a Reiki session or Reiki course and say “I’m not really sure what Reiki is but I know I had to find out more.” If you’re also curious to learn more about receiving or learning Reiki then please contact me at the Lotus Retreat on 07940542181 or email carrie@thelotusretreat.com. What is Wellness? Is it a blend of health and happiness? Is it just about feeling good? Is it about being healthy? The modern wellness industry is worth millions, and there are good things and bad things about it. To me wellness is about helping people with their ‘self-care’. What do I mean by ‘self-care’? It can be seen as any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Good self-care can be the key to improved mood and reduced anxiety, also to a good relationship with oneself and with others. Wellness and self-care are both about taking care of yourself, taking responsibility and living a balanced life. ● ● ● ● ●
Eat a nutritious, healthy diet. Exercise (good for physical and emotional health) Get enough sleep Make time for relaxation Do things that make you happy
It has become increasing noticeable to me that we generally all know about self-care, wellness and health. A lot of us buy into the industry by purchasing various products to help with our wellness. We read about it in health books and fitness magazines. We monitor it with our exercise trackers and we guard against poor health with supplements and expensive meal replacements – the list is endless. But we are still, in a lot of cases, no further forward with our journey to a better life! Only when we have a good enough reason to make change do we actually do it!

OPENING TIMES SUNDAY - TUESDAY CLOSED
Then sometimes when our reason to ‘look better’ has passed (that family wedding!) we can revert back to our old habits and let go of our self-control and our self-care. Often, caring for others takes over. I spoke to someone recently who had lost 5 stone in weight for their son’s wedding only to put on 4 stone by eating what she said was “rubbish food”, and I quote, “I know eating rubbish food is the reason I’ve gained weight but I’m too busy to eat better.” A point I took up with her, of course! Sadly, not looking after yourself can lead to feelings of sadness, frustration and self-loathing. Sometimes we’ll lie to ourselves about our situation – it’s then easier to lie to others about your eating habits and feelings, making it harder for professionals to help! Being aware, owning up, taking responsibility, asking for help and acting upon that help (very important) can be the first step to reversing that negative loop. Make healthy living simple! By Madeline Miller
Another year rolls around as August makes its soundless slide into September. As I write, I’m looking at the buddleia in the front garden which has once again grown to its gargantuan former height, and will require a whole weekend of cutting, breaking and bagging up to prevent it getting out of hand. This weekend was the first in a very long time that I have required my fluffy winter socks and it became a necessity on Saturday that I had a rummage through my winter jumpers bag in my wardrobe to find the least overtly ‘winter’ one that I could find. This summer has been a belter…so much so that it makes me question my former protestations that I can handle whatever a permanently sunny climate could offer. Truth is even I found it too much. Wilting under the sun and praising the heavens and whoever it was that gave us air conditioning. I’m round about ready now for a cool off, and can’t deny that I’m feeling quite excited about dusting the cinnamon and Christmas smelling candles that I put away with summer stars in my eyes in January. With all this talk of sun, it was apt that I reached for Circe by Orange Prize winning author Madeline Miller. Circe is of course the nymph daughter of sun god Helios in Greek mythology. Miller’s novel tells of the evolution of Circe into a sorceress, cast out by her father and feckless mother and placed in permanent exile far away from the surroundings of her youth. Circe the enchantress seduces Odysseus, bears him a child and is forced to confront her own demons in understanding how to let her mortal son reach the heights of his potential. I haven’t read Miller’s prize-winning and much lauded previous novel ‘The Song of Achilles’ even though it’s been on my shelf for many years now. But based upon my liking for Circe I will be making a beeline for it. Rich, poignant, human…an ideal novel to see out the dying days of this most extraordinary summer.

As September is typically a time when going back to school is on parents minds, I thought education about wine tasting apt. So, how do you go about getting to grips with the thousands of wines, grape varieties and wine makers. A fun way is to hold wine tasting parties, either do it yourself or with a professional host. Here, you can learn about 6 - 10 wines in a relaxed and fun environment. Of course the internet is full of excellent web sites for information about any wine, but the real learning only happens when you hold a glass in front of you and taste it to see if you like it. There are two tracks of training for those seeking a career in wine, the WSET courses and the sommelier courses. While the formal training requires many hours of study, the wine tasting party can be delivered easily in a couple of hours, with a little preparation. First decide what wines to serve, it is a good idea to serve wines in pairs. This helps you to compare two wines, so for example you could compare a Bordeaux with a Burgundy wine, or an Australian wine with a Californian made from the same grape. Then you can provide everyone with paper so they can jot down their thoughts about a wine. I would also provide a list of the wines, prices and where they can be bought along with a simple description of the wine. Some people like to taste wine blind, which means the bottle is covered so you can’t see what it is. This is useful as we all have likes and dislikes, so can be surprised when we like a wine which we thought we didn’t. As a minimum, buy some water biscuits and provide water. This type of biscuit sucks the residual wine flavours from your mouth and is perfect when switching between different types of wine. Finally, when tasting, the three steps are: • Look at it, does the colour set your expectation to a degree, then a swirl in the glass helps to release the smell. • Smell it - take a good sniff and see if it triggers any memories of particular fruits and taste it. • Taste it - It is a good idea to swill the wine around inside your mouth for say 10 seconds, to make sure it reaches all parts of your tongue. Again, you should taste various flavours. There is no single answer to what a particular wine tastes or smells of, but most people will agree on a core smell or flavour. You will then make your own mind up if you like it. If you want to try tasting wines there is the Oxford wine festival on the 7th and 8th of September, where you have a choice of hundreds of wines. There are too many wines to get round them all, so aim for those you think you might like, or try ones that you have never heard of. You will no doubt find some new wines to add to the list that you like. Ian Lloyd
