It was great to see such a good turnout even if the ‘home’ team were slightly outnumbered. With nearly forty people attending it would have been impractical for us to have a 60-second round and benefit from the opportunity to meet as many of our guests as we would have liked to. So we sat on tables of six to eight with approximately half the seats taken each by Faringdon and Wantage members. The intricate plan involved finding a ‘partner’ and going back to a different table to network with others. Well that was the plan and it never really worked possibly because we had underestimated the time it would take to serve breakfast. Nevertheless we moved tables once and met a good cross section of Faringdon and Wantage members with everyone enjoying the opportunity to broaden their business network. Our next meeting will be held in The Bell on Monday 5th September and we would welcome as many readers as possible to come along. We will be holding an extended 60-second round with the opportunity to question and be questioned about your business. www.fbbc-networking.co.uk

Business Update
It was fantastic to see Faringdon buzzing from another successful FollyFest. Local business support through sponsorship and the donation of services and time contributed hugely to its success. The pay-back is evident as several retailers in the town have reported an up-surge in footfall and new customers whilst many new emerging ventures raised their profile by having stalls at the event. Hopefully even more businesses can exploit this jewel next year. Construction work at Faringdon Park (formerly the 4&20) is still on track and all three retailers will be trading early next year. Key stakeholders in the town are working with the developers, future owners and tenants to ensure that Faringdon is promoted to the wider area, increasing the visibility of all our town's offerings. This should tie in very nicely with the development of a town centre strategy. Oxfordshire County Council are committed to delivering the Government's aims for homes and businesses to access yet faster broadband. The local district council have been responsible for our area and are keen to know if small and medium businesses (and residential) are struggling to get a connection or sufficient speeds to and from the new equipment. Please contact the Vale direct or let the Chamber of Commerce know and we will pass on your feedback www.faringdonchamberofcommerce.co.uk Whilst on a digital topic, please be aware that "Vale4Business" have organised a presentation from “The Digital Garage on Tour” on 13 September at Milton Park. This seminar covers the use of Google to enhance your business and is designed to support and advise businesses regardless of their technical expertise. Registration and information on this and other free workshops can be found on the Vale4Business website http://www.vale4business.com/ Finally, a plug for Faringdon's second "Bangers and Beer Festival" which will be taking place on Friday 30th September and Saturday

0 0 0 1 Driving north through an area of low population where one would expect, incorrectly, little distilling history, I passed several distilleries that I have visited on previous trips. One of these was the Glenmorangie Distillery at Tain, whose very tall stills resemble a cathedral organ - plenty of spirits in both I guess but with Glenmorangie’s being eminently consumable! They are famed for their cask selection being one of the first distilleries to ‘finish’ in wine casks. I had no time to stop either at the nearby Balblair Distillery. With it’s short fat stills the whisky is rich in style, and (like Glenrothes) they have vintage releases, selected by the very enthusiastic distillery manager John MacDonald. Much of the film ‘The Angels Share’ was shot here. Brora Distillery had a miss too. Mothballed in 1983 (Fran is the only person I know to have been inside) and the whisky now fetches extraordinary prices. Brora was replaced by the nearby upstart Clynelish with six stills and, like Cardhu, the whisky is a major component of the Johnnie Walker blends. Coastal in style, giving layer after layer of flavours, pour a dram and just blow gently over it, then nose it - it reminds me of a wind blown sea shore! My destination is Wolfburn Distillery, near Thurso. A new distillery and Britain’s most northerly mainland whisky distillery. Functional and efficient, a modern factory with two stills and maturation and bottling carried out onsite. Named after the old distillery of that name, whose ruins are just visible from a window. Here I had the unique experience of tasting the mature spirit just before it became whisky – that would be in four days time when it had reached the magic date of three years and one day. A lovely, soft, well priced dram, produced from some of the softest water in Scotland. I had an unexpected surprise at breakfast the next day at my B&B as I was greeted by a customer, a lecturer at Shrivenham there’s simply just nowhere to hide! First stop of the day was Dunnet Gin Distillery, which is Britain’s most northerly mainland distillery (Dunnet Head being the most northerly point on mainland Britain). The one tiny still, produces Rock Rose Gin using local botanicals. We stock the two strengths produced, one being Navy Strength at 57%abv. On to Old Pulteney Distillery at Wick, a must visit for any whisky lover. Built in 1826 it has had a chequered history and has two very quirky stills, with the lyne arms resembling very large truck exhausts. The whisky produced mostly goes into award winning single malts, with the 21 year old being voted the best whisky in the world in 2012 and this year the 1989 vintage, now sadly sold out. Home now, following an overnight stay in Arbroath and a memorable Smokie breakfast which set me up for the long drive. A great trip!

Sausage Roulade!
The sausage roulade is a wonderous thing! I make rather a lot of it in the shop and which ever way I change it, it always comes out rather well. Perhaps you are wondering why I may be about to give up the secrets of this delicious roll? Well I’ve decided that recipes are always particular to the person creating it and the finished dish will be different for each person that has made it, even if 12 people have the same ingredients in the same room, all will be different. Therefore, my sausage roulade will still taste particular to me in Hare in the Woods and I want to share this easy as pie recipe so you can make it your own with your own twist. This glorified sausage roll comes courtesy of my father. He often cooks it for a lunch time treat when we visit. Thick slices of pastry, encasing rich herbed sausage meat, served with spoonfuls of chutney and a punchy green salad. Oh, and don’t forget the tomatoes! What I really enjoy about this dish is its capability of change. Take the same format then mix different things into the meat like crumbled black pudding or chopped chorizo. Different herbs set it apart too or even using a different meat. Minced lamb is good with Moroccan style spices mixed in along with pine nuts and raisins. Or perhaps try a good drop of chilli and some green Thai curry paste with lots of chopped coriander. And then of course comes the pastry. I sometimes cheat using a good ready made pastry. Or I make short crust with a touch of lard thrown in for good measure. Puff pastry doesn’t feature that often here. I prefer the crumbliness of short crust, especially when it is the part touching the baking tray which becomes crunchy with the juices from the meat. So to serve 4, take around 600g of your finest sausage meat. Squish it , with a finely chopped onion and generous amounts of chopped parsley and sage. This time of year I like to add around 100g cubed cheddar and a cubed apple, it’s beautifully seasonal. Roll out around 300g ready made pastry to a rectangle around the size of an A4 piece of paper. Lay the sausage meat along the middle in an even log shape, pressing it to try and remove any air. Bring the pastry up and over the meat then as tightly as you can, roll the whole thing up to make a lovely roulade. Place the roll seam side down on to a lined baking tray. Brush with a beaten egg and then sprinkle with a few dried herbs, I like l’herbs de provence. Bake for around 45 minutes. Cut in to chunks for a picnic or take it to your table with pride. August Ramblings!
| The Advertiser | page 9 |
Hello and welcome to this new month’s ramblings. It’s been a very busy month professionally in my Practice and with our livestock, managing the grass and hedges. Enjoying the countryside in Summer, safely and with regard to animal welfare. This time of year has been marked by the new display of the Mary Rose at Portsmouth Dockyard, the Olympics, the annual Big Butterfly Count and the annual (122nd) BBC Promenade concerts. I always try so hard to listen to pieces of music performed by passionate and gifted orchestras and their conductors, playing new music and yet the old favourites remain strong. They remain because of associations with events in my life, for many reasons. One way to unwind mindfully from long and busy days at work, we all have our different ways to do these essential, brain down-time! This time of year is also marked by agricultural shows, with our local show under the White Horse at the end of August and the Royal Welsh Show, the biggest agricultural show in Europe. Good weather blessed this year’s event and it was so good to hear of families taking part with the younger members of the family competing. One show-appointed veterinary surgeon met his wife-to-be when showing his own Welsh Black cattle, after a few years at the Royal Welsh Show. So romance is always in the air, rain or shine! Two young brothers from West Wales competed with their poultry and ducks; the birds’ beaks and legs polished and waxed to perfection and the beauty of the feather patterns and characters made clear. They were very successful. The 6000 sheep needed for the shearing competitions were all rounded up by 6am and in the show ground by 8am, despite the farmer’s original lorry failing to start. Many of these were the reason for the 44 second shearing record! A farrier who shoes his own Welsh Cobs had a beautiful young horse in competitions. The granddaughter of a retired valleys farmer, taking after her Nan and her mother, was showing some of the family’s rare South Wales Mountain sheep. This young lady had been to the show every year of her life, showing very special sheep, a breed that looks very like some of those I keep myself. Of course, machinery was very prominent, with tractors, harvesters, mowers, hay-turners and balers, followed by new bale wrappers all present. Hay has been good this year as July had been quite kind to grassland farmers. The grass has grown tall, the seeds a-plenty. Plenty of seeds have ended up puncturing and entering dogs in their feet and down dogs ears. Certain breeds of dog which include the small modern crosses with an over-abundance of hair between the toes have been particularly affected. Every owner should examine their pet’s feet every day and where necessary, arrange for their grooming parlour to clip out throughout the season. Seeds wind their way along the matted core of hair then sit and move into soft, vulnerable skin in the webbing. Despite all efforts, some seeds can track right up the leg, front or rear and come out via persistent abscesses in the armpits, groin or even the lower back. I saw an adder the other day, driving home from a long Saturday morning surgery. The road was hot and what I thought was some dry broken vegetation, started to turn and move as the car approached. The speed it moving back into the safety of the verge was impressive. My practice has seen one definite case of snakebite, it is essential to bring in your unfortunate pet as soon as possible, giving the anti-venom to have a chance to work. We have a protocol of approaching staff manning our emergency poison centre who have direct links to hospital practices around the country to authorise release. Failing early presentation, there is great risk of major swellings of limb or head, wherever bitten. Steroids must not be given and owners are warned that one major issue will be the closing down of venom damaged blood vessels under the skin and complete loss of skin, let alone the muscles underneath the bite. Not every bite, in my opinion, is paired – it depends on the speed of avoidance of the dog. I must emphasize that no adder deliberately targets anything other than its prey, strikingly-marked adders can superficially be confused with harmless, beautiful grass snakes, that pose no issues when disturbed by dogs and owners walking across their habitats. Words are adding-up, so may I leave you by asking you, to take great care with your pets on hot sunny days, muggy days, even overcast days - regarding heat stroke. Its as serious in its own way as snake bites in terms of what happens inside the unlucky dog’s body, within hours and a few days. Enjoy the month of September and I’ll be back with more views and more news from my Practice next month. Thank you, dear Reader. IN A DARK, DARK WOOD BY RUTH WARE
I’m not a fan of hen nights. The thought of a hen weekend is enough to send me scampering into a cupboard and not emerging until I’m pretty sure that the last trace of feathered halos and ‘I’m With the Bride’ sashes have disappeared. Ruth Ware’s ‘In a Dark, Dark Wood did absolutely nothing to change the way I feel. Writer Nora is contacted out of the blue by a friend of her ex best friend Clare to attend Clare’s hen weekend. Nora is stunned because - for reasons we don’t find out until much later in the book – she and Clare did not exactly part on the best of terms. After much to-ing and fro-ing (should I go, should I not?), Clare heads off with her friend Nina to attend what she thinks will be, at the most, an uncomfortable experience, soon over with. Needless to say…things do not go well. But Ware takes her time in building up the tension as secrets come to light slowly, and information is filtered through a haze of alcohol and other illicit substances. The setting is painted vividly by Ware – an isolated beautiful modernist house, muffled by pine forests. It’s difficult to write a review of a thriller without giving away spoilers but it’s enough to say that the truths hit Nora deeply, and once things start to spin out of control, it’s horrifying. I may not like hen nights, but I like a good thriller. And this one ticked my boxes. For a debut novel, I will say that Ware is off to a cracking start. Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon has taken an option to make a film version, and I cannot wait to see what she does with it. Whether she can keep the tension of the original will remain to be seen.

Chickens @ Seven Acres Nurseries We feel that we have to write this to try and put a stop to all the rumours going round. We are not shut or closing down or having a sale to sell up all stock! All rumours to that effect are untrue. What is happening is that owing to planning applications, on both sides of us and around the back of us, there is nothing we can do about the agents showing us as a housing development, even though the land owner who owns the land has told us this is not happening. As a local business what we need is your help and support to please put an end to these rumours as they are very bad for our business. We invite you to please come in and see all the animals, you can wander around with the children who can feed the chickens for 50p or just have an ice lolly. Ant and Dec the goats love a scratch, Squeak the pig will roll over for her tummy to be rubbed and if it's hot you will see her in her bath taking a dip. If you have a spare carrot or apple you can make Treacle and Ozzy, the ponies, day. Not to mention Mollie, Emily, Lily, Larry and Tallulah, the sheep, who also like carrots and what's more they are very friendly and love a good stroke. We always have plenty of chicks and chickens for you to enjoy watching and buy, if you wish to start your own little flock.... Do you have a garden? Then, please come and see all the lovely plants we have for sale, you might find that perfect plant for that difficult spot you have. We look forward to seeing you soon.

K…. Therapeutic Massage
Specialising in Muscular Conditions How low can you go…..? September. The kids are back at school and all being well, we are catching the tail end of the summer sun. Analysis of the post summer holiday indulgences. Hmmm….. On the agenda may be the cut back on treats and invariably the alcohol consumption (passed off at the time as being for medicinal purposes – cures all sorts of stress….). But how big is that glass? And how strong is your wine? These are crucial factors when calculating how much alcohol you are drinking (as are the size of your shots and strength of your vodka). Bars and restaurants routinely offer a large glass of wine that is 250ml, a third of a standard bottle. Fill that with a powerful red, white or rosé – almost certainly from a warm-climate vineyard area, where the grapes get especially ripe and therefore contain more sugar, which turns into alcohol – and your “one drink” can contain up to four units of alcohol. Instead, if you order a small, 125ml glass of a wine that’s naturally lighter from a cooler place, such as Germany, England or the hills of Prosecco in north-east Italy, that drink will hold just one and a half to two units of alcohol. Going that one step further, you can always opt for a low alcohol wine. There has been a revolution of this sector due to the shift to more responsible drinking or designated drivers. Often, wines can be as low as 5-6% abv, which is the equivalent of one pint of fuller strength lager. In the past, this meant that one had to compromise on taste and quality; however the application of modern technology has negated this aspect. Codor-New Frizz 5.5 Albarino 2014 Spain Den Boer Wines £9.99 Unlike the rest of low alcohol wines on the market, FRIZZ 5.5 is obtained from wines that have fully fermented, which makes for a more developed organoleptic profile and greater complexity. The outcome is a sparkling wine with more intense aromas and more body. FRIZZ 5.5 is subjected to a careful dealcoholisation process which achieves lower alcohol whilst maintaining all the wine’s properties. It undergoes a second fermentation, which naturally forms FRIZZ 5.5.’s characteristic fine bubbles. The appearance is pale straw yellow with a fine continuous stream of bubbles. On the nose, prominent aromas of white peach and nectarines, with citrus notes such as grapefruit. A very pleasant fresh mouth feel follows on the palate with a long, well balanced fruity finish. Does ‘Quick’ Food Have to be ‘Bad’ Food?
I always enjoy talking with my clients whether we’re training for health and weight loss or I’m giving a massage to relieve pain and muscle tension. My curious nature usually leads me to ask a lot of questions so I can build up a picture which may reveal clues to help my clients reach their goals. A casual question, “What are you having for dinner tonight?” usually throws up some interesting answers. “Something quick” is usually the reply I get back. “Pasta?” “Yes, probably”. When in a rush we seem to opt for something quick and simple, but not necessarily for something good. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with pasta, but I can make a healthy salad or steam some vegetables in the time my spaghetti will boil (8-10 mins). We are all busy and we don’t always have time to make a proper meal, or so we believe, but always time for Facebook or other pastimes! We only seem to care when we need to make changes to our bodies – for that summer holiday, wedding or special party. My whole grain rice takes 20-25 mins to simmer and my 180g serving contains 256 calories and 50g of carbohydrate, and only 6.5g of protein and 2.7g of fibre. It is a filler! Not only that, starchy foods can lead to a spike in blood glucose. Cheap and quick carbs, such as white rice, potatoes, bread and breakfast cereals may be filling but can lack lots of balanced nutrients. So far I have assumed those looking for a quick fix meal are prepared to turn on the oven or microwave, but I know some of you will want to open a packet and consume processed snacks. Once you get into the habit, it takes the same amount of thought to prepare vegetables, meat and fish (pre-cooked, if necessary), fruits and nuts, seeds etc. If cooking isn’t for you slice up some raw vegetables or buy some good quality dips (hummus, guacamole etc.) and get chomping. With very little effort you can make a super-salad or an omelette - how difficult and time consuming is that? Try making a batch of chilli, freeze some and when you are in a hurry microwave it! Certain convenience foods - anything frozen, canned, precut, pre-washed, and pre-bagged - are also fair game for healthy meals, if going to your local market is not an option. It’s possible to assemble a healthy meal in about the time it takes you to get in the car and go to the drive-through or fast food outlet. Nutritious meals can be quick and tasty. Start rethinking your decisions by cutting down on high energy foods that are low on nutrition and replace them with highly nutritious and just as easy to prepare foods. They make you feel better, do you more good, and they can be easily as cheap and easy to produce. No excuses – start to think about what you are doing to your body. Stop kidding yourself that you don’t have time – it doesn’t have to take much time at all! Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com
