Business Update

WHO’S NEXT?

The summer holidays are over and it’s back to business as usual. But first a big shout out to the FollyFest team for another successful event, filling the town with revelers both local and from further afield. The Town Team have been busy collecting postcodes and talking to people entering their prize draw, discovering that people from near and far were unaware of what Faringdon had to offer on many levels. This will be addressed as the new town business plan develops. Whilst the uncertainty of Brexit dominates the news, the EU are still funding business development in the region, investing in projects to support and encourage businesses to start up or grow. From this, Oxfordshire Business Support (OBS) and the Oxfordshire local enterprise partnership are facilitating a number of free workshops. Starting a new business, marketing know-how and bringing a new product to market are just a few to be rolled out over the next month or so. More details and a list of other free workshops available can be found on the OBS website. Vale4Business and Zanzi Digital have teamed up to provide a number of free digital marketing focused workshops. The final one in this series takes place on Wednesday, 20 September. Registration is through the Vale4Business website. Next month Vale4Business will launch their first annual business awards. There will be a number of events including an official Call Trish: 01367 820060 launch, a workshop programme and a glamorous awards dinner. Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS The V4B Awards “will recognise, reward and promote the district’s success stories establishing a benchmark for business Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk excellence in the local area!” There is still plenty of local advice and support available for our Finally, we would like to wish the Faringdon Beer Society good luck SME’s and entrepreneurs looking to start up and grow, so please with their third “Bangers and Beer” festival on the 29 and 30 take up these opportunities. September. A number of local businesses have sponsored the event and all profits will be going to The Pumphouse Project and The Place (formerly the Children’s Centre). 579798

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Due to the summer and school holidays there was a slightly lower number of members attending our August meeting which as normal was held in The Bell. However, it was a lively meeting with a good deal of discussion about our member speaker’s presentation as Julie Nichols briefed us about the importance of language in business. We are very grateful to Julie for giving us such an informative and insightful presentation that made us all think on how we can better use language to improve business performance. We would like to draw everyone’s attention to our new website www.http/fbbc-networking.co.uk From here you will be able to see what events are coming up and also have the opportunity to book your place at the next meeting. Stefan Thomas, the bestseller author of Business Networking For Dummies and Instant Networking will be joining us in September. Stef has been networking for years travelling the country to attend groups both big and small. During that time, he has seen that most people who he meets whilst networking aren't making enough sales. During our presentation, Stef will be telling you why it isn't working for you and, crucially, sharing what you can do about it. Not to be missed! We expect this one to be busy - so book early to reserve your place. We may have to cap numbers So do book your place for our meeting on Monday 4 September 2017 when you will get a great chance to hear how to improve your networking performance.

0 0 0 1 OUR SERVICES

One of the great things about whisky making is how often more than one family member is involved in the business. It may be that several generations of the same family work in, or for, the whisky industry, and then there are also those instances where home for the whole family is actually based at a distillery. Long gone are the days when the exciseman lived on site but there are still places where an employee may be lucky enough to have a house that comes with the job. One distillery that left a lasting impression with me in this respect is Tomatin in the Highlands - I’ll never forget my surprise upon seeing a cluster of white cottages the size of a small village alongside the distillery. Historically, the combination of Tomatin’s isolated location and a good supply of juniper wood (which burns with no smoke) meant that it was perfect for illicit distilling. However, when a legal distillery was established in 1897 this isolation became a problem when recruiting workers so a number of houses were built onsite which, over the years, has expanded. Now there are 30 houses, with 80% of employees living at the distillery – including one family where mother, father and son all work for Tomatin - and perhaps it is this that inspires the loyalty and pride evident throughout the company, with craftsmanship being paramount and with traditional methods being passed on to the next generation. Always well respected as a constituent of blends, in recent years the focus at Tomatin has been on growing the range of single malts. It is a great example of a Highland whisky rich, fruity and full of character but with a delightful softness, with differing ages and cask types being used to enhance various aspects of the spirit. For example, the 12 year old is matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, which give sweet, ripe apple and pear flavours, while the 14 year old has been in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-tawny port casks, resulting in red berry, honey and toffee notes. Most recently, the new limited series called the Five Virtues has displayed the interplay of the five different elements with the Tomatin spirit, and the first two releases featuring Wood (matured in 3 cask types) and Fire (matured in heavily charred oak) have proved extremely popular. Tomatin may be a large distillery (at one time the biggest in Scotland) but the close knit team of distillery employees are very much both a small community in their own right and also part of the wider local community. A perfect example of this is the tale of a local mother who gave birth in a lay-by close to the distillery earlier this year, and who subsequently went to Tomatin and filled a special bottle of whisky to be given to the baby on its 21st Birthday! The Swans Of Fifth Avenue By Melanie Benjamin After last month’s ‘Girl Power’ edition I decided it was fitting to segue into the ‘U.S Edition’ considering how much news time is currently taken up with U.S issues. I’m a politics junkie, and have always had a passion for U.S politics, though I know people who take a very different attitude. Foaming at the mouth at the news that George W Bush had been re-elected in 2004, my colleague at the time turned to me and said ‘why are you getting so excited, what they do over there is not our issue.’

We offer government funded Nursery places to some 2 year olds, as well as 3 and 4 year olds For more information, contact

I was aghast for I took the view that whatever happens in the U.S will be felt by the rest of the world on at least one level. Like the whole Butterfly Effect – an insane President making a seemingly innocuous policy having repercussions somewhere down the line. But I’m leaping ahead of myself. My reading this month took in thriller (What Alice Knew by T.A Cotterel), romance with a steely streak (This Love by Dani Atkins) and a book that gave a whole new twist to the world of Jane Austen (Jane Austen: The Secret Radical by Helena Kelly). But the two that stuck out in my mind were The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin and To Kill the President by Sam Bourne. Two very different books spanning very different eras of U.S history. Benjamin’s book is a fizzy, yet gripping fiction-based-fact novel covering the rise of author Truman Capote, and his relationship to his ‘swans’ of the title, society ladies from the upper echelons famous in their day for their beauty, style and wit. Truman is the jewel that glimmers at the heart of their clique until he becomes a very bad boy and bites the jewel-adorned hand that fed him.

To Kill The President By Sam Bourne

Bourne’s book is something else altogether – a thriller that for all its fictions, is a little too close to fact for it not to be felt keenly, and to act as a primer for what could happen with a lunatic taking over the White House. Bourne is the literary alias of journalist and broadcaster Jonathan Freedland, a fact that gives the warnings in the book added credence. The plot cracks along at a whiplash pace and never lets up until it reaches its conclusion. One novel whisked me away, while the other brought me face to face with reality. I loved them both.

September Ramblings!

| The Advertiser | page 9 |

Hello and welcome to my monthly ramble through all things interesting and hopefully useful! I’ve swapped my webbed feet now that sunshine’s reappeared and is, once more, speeding up the ripening of garden apples, plums and tomatoes. Swifts have started the long journey back to Africa almost two weeks ago now, as I write, one of the classic sights of summer above the Village. The vines at Forty Hall Farm and Vineyard, near Enfield, are ripening too and this centre of excellence for sustainable organic winemaking wins Soil Association awards as well as a sell-out of its wine! www.fortyhallvineyard.com/pages/about-us Along with the Farm, the Vineyard is the first on a commercial scale in London since the Middle Ages. The 170-acre farm has rare breed livestock as well as a thriving community orchard and market garden. As well as a local food project, the Vineyard also provides health and well-being benefits and opportunities to volunteer, open to a wide range of local people. Although the vast majority of grape flowers are wind-pollinated, with bees only passing through to other pollen sources nearby, in general, bees play a vital role in pollinating our flowers, fruit and vegetables. Not only that, but our relationship with the bee is one of our oldest relationships with any other animal on this planet. Take the honey gatherers all over the World. By farming organically as well as planting designated pollen-rich flowering areas on other farms, by turning our gardens into biologically diverse spaces, we can create habitats in which pollinators will thrive. It has been estimated that one-third of the food we eat depends on pollinators, so their work is incredibly important for humans too. Taking to the wing recently was the female Red Kite who was brought in off the Ridgeway several weeks ago by a caring client. Our Team gave support for that day and we were fortunate for this amazing bird to be collected by the International Centre for Birds of Prey (ICBP) in Newent, Gloucestershire. They continued with her care so well that she regained her health and weight, after fluids, nursing, feeding and de-worming and was ready for release last week. This we did last week by driving over to collect her. Posts are on our Practice Facebook pages. A truly magic day, also enhanced by giving us preopening hours access to the collection of some 250 different birds of prey, including a tawny owl that went AWOL (no pun intended) after a flying demo for Sir David Attenborough. The Centre is 50 years young and, with beautiful gardens, amazing staff and three opportunities for flying demonstrations a day, every day of the week, this is a place so well worth the effort to visit with the family. I am hoping to increase the drug company list of sponsors for them. Such care and attention to each bird’s needs has no parallel. Have a look at http://icbp.org/site/ and Moccas the Andean Condor on https://twitter.com/condortweets ! With the warmer, more humid weather will come the increased risk of tick vector-borne disease. Lyme Disease (LD) is endemic in the UK and is a very important, localized health and immune system risk. Cases have been reported from most counties in England and Wales, with infection occurring most frequently in Exmoor, the New Forest, the South Downs, parts of Wiltshire and Berkshire, Surrey and West Sussex, Thetford Forest, the Lake District and the North York Moors. Cases have been reported occasionally from many other areas with suitable tick habitats. In cases where ticks have attached for about 72 hours there lies the greatest risk. LD has characteristic clinical features and can affect multiple organ systems. A common skin manifestation seen in approximately 60% to 80% of patients at the bite site is a localized rash called erythema migrans (EM). The rash can also occur distal to the site of the tick bite. However, absence of a rash or failure to recollect a tick bite does not exclude the diagnosis. The rash should be treated without waiting for a blood test, which may be negative at this stage and the antibody response (which is what the test measures) fluctuates in early disease. Early treatment is important to avoid late complications. As dog owners, there are some very important options for us – using spot-on tick preparations that both repel and kill (so no biting), applied about 1 week before the higher risk area is visited, backed up by chewable multi-purpose flea, tick and worming tablets. A tick-remover looking like a mini-claw hammer is still a useful tool to carry. In addition, a LD vaccine is available for use on dogs in the UK. So, on that serious but positive note, I wish you a safe and enjoyable, sun-filled September! Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

Grenache Celebrations

Rob.. The Cheese Man! Rob

Best Cornish Pasty’s. Really Tasty Gammon Ham. 01367 241702 Market Place Faringdon SN7 7HP

HIGHWORTH TRAVEL INDEPENDENT LUXURY TRAVEL SPECIALIST Here we are – September; the kids are back at school and many of you would have enjoyed some form of summer (?) holiday. Right, then back to work! What better way to ease into it than to join in with the celebrations of International Grenache Day on Friday, September 15th 2017. Grenache, also known in Spain as Garnacha, is a black grape variety, known for its ripe red berry flavours such as raspberries and strawberries mixed in with white pepper spice. Its claim to fame is that it is one of the key components of the highly regarded French Rhone blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is thought to have originated in Aragon, northern Spain, where it was cultivated for use as both a varietal and blended wines. Its proximity to the border of France saw it become grown further afield, across the Pyrenees Mountains to the southern region of France in the Languedoc-Roussillon where its name was translated to Grenache, as we know it today. In the southern Rhone, Grenache was found to be the ideal grape variety to blend with existing varieties as it added alcohol, body and vibrant fruit flavours to a wine. It has been described as a ‘chameleon’ with its ability to pair with more foods than most grapes! So join fellow grenachistas this International Grenache Day and try some of these Grenache/Garnacha food and wine pairings on September 15th: Light red varietal: Poultry or pork, Salmon or trout. Full-bodied red varietal: Meat, grilled foods. Light red blend: Grilled foods, works both with meat & fish. Full-bodied red blend: grilled foods, spicy, flavoured foods, slow cooked Boeuf Bourguignon, lamb shoulder, game. Spices: thyme, tarragon, garlic, chives & fennel. White / Blanc / Gris: Summer truffles, salad, barbecue, white fish with lemon. Rosé (Dry) Versatile with food: Salads, including raw tomatoes, vinaigrettes Fish: especially salmon, and seafood Light meats: paprika-spiced chorizo particularly good with spicy, Thai, Vietnamese & Chinese food. NB: SERVING TEMPERATURE: Keep it cool! Grenache is often served too warm, causing alcohol to be perceived as out of balance. Serving suggestions: Red - Serve Cool - 14-18°C White & Rose: Serve Chilled - Not less than 8°C. Enjoy!

Healthy Living!

01367 240402 Even after a relatively short break, it can come as a surprise to see just how much conditioning you've lost. Re-establishing good habits and routines is important. Start by getting back on track by putting something in the diary and act upon it. Prioritise activity. It is easier to start your journey back to fitness by doing a variety of activities you enjoy. That doesn’t necessarily mean you must re-join the gym or buy new fitness equipment. But it does mean being serious about making time for fitness and health. You can do this by yourself or with friends, a group or a personal fitness professional. By adding in another person into your exercise routine you are less likely to cancel or find excuses to back out. Making exercise a priority in your diary is so important - it should be non-negotiable! The clients I train who keep to their appointments are the ones who get results and see change happen. Continuity of exercise and good eating leads to positive change. It then becomes part of your identity. You can achieve this by doing things like logging your activity or by using an App to keep a record of your daily movement, how much time you exercise each day, how many steps you walk, how far you run or cycle, what you weigh etc. ‘Keeping on track’ is all about being aware of all the indicators of progress. Your clothes fitting better or the ability to lift heavier weights, or to work out for longer without getting exhausted are some. Remember there are several indicators of progress other than your weight · · · · · · ·

Improved sleep Clear thinking Increased energy levels Less DOMS (Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness) after exercise Reduced resting heart rate Your clothes fitting better And of course, other improved health indicators from your doctor.

Now you have taken the plunge make sure that when you achieve one of your goals you remember to reward yourself. Rewards on achievement help with long term motivation. Decide on a goal and a reward and then work towards it. Do whatever works for you. Making behaviour changes is hard - rewards are a great motivator! The holidays are over and for those of you who have taken the summer off, now’s the time to get the diary out and start filling in your activity / gym / fitness / health / wellbeing days! Good luck, Rich. Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com

| The Advertiser | page 21 | RICS means that Professionalism and Integrity is in our DNA

For most of us, property is our largest single asset. When it comes to moving, it is the place that you entrust to a relative stranger hoping that they are going to represent you and your home in the best light possible. Given everything that is at stake, why is it that there are no mandatory professional qualifications required to be an estate agent? In fact, having just searched a well known jobsite, the key requirements to ‘get in’ seem to be, “...enthusiasm and a driving licence…” Whilst we agree that being able to get to and from appointments is an advantage, enthusiasm without a professional understanding is possibly the reason why the estate agency industry is, at times, slightly tarnished. There is a subtle difference between the motivation of doing a professional job well and the enthusiasm of just earning a commission. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is the global professional body that enforces the highest of international standards in the valuation, management and development of land, real estate, construction and infrastructure. Their motto is simply, “Confidence through professional standards.” At Waymark Property we have the distinct advantage that both directors are chartered surveyors and governed by RICS. Adding residential sales and letting's to our commercial property, valuation and development work means that Waymark Property is one of the only multi-disciplined practices in the area and in just under two years, we have seen our business go from strength to strength, bucking current property market trends. From the outside looking in, it is easy to assume that all estate agents are the same. We have access to the same advertising, we tend to have our own websites and you will normally find us all on Rightmove. But it is not about the tools of the trade or the business name above the door. It is about the people behind the desk, plying their craft, with an embedded commitment to integrity and professionalism. It is this level of integrity and professionalism, ahead of personal gain, that is essential when it comes to negotiating the sale of your property. Let’s not forget, we are dealing with hundreds of thousands of pounds of your equity, and with interest rates for savers still running historically low, getting the best price possible for your home is essential. As members of the RICS, we are ultimately accountable for our actions. Part of that is taking full responsibility for all that we do from appraisal to completion, treating all those involved with respect. Our collective experience of nearly 50 years as chartered surveyors guarantees a service above and beyond the normal. We also have driving licenses and enthusiasm too! For a confidential chat about all things property, be it residential, commercial, sales, letting's, planning or development, drop us a note at enquiries@waymarkproperty.co.uk or phone Ed and Jenny on 01367 820 070.
