WHO’S NEXT?

Business Update

Faringdon has been chosen to pilot a new museum concept. The Chamber of Commerce amongst others have been approached for their views about a “community museum” with the exhibits housed around the town in local buildings and businesses to make up a heritage trail. People could follow it using leaflets which could be picked up at the various locations or a by using a smartphone app, depending on your preference. Does Faringdon need a museum? Would it increase visitors to our town? What would you have on display? If you have a view then please get in touch with us on president@faringdonchamberofcommerce.co.uk Please also contact us if you are have any comments on the availability of superfast broadband and phone reception in Faringdon and the surrounding area. We are aware that some local businesses are having issues with connectivity as the demands on the infrastructure increases and technology advances. We are intending to get the various stakeholders together to tell us what developments we can expect in the immediate future. There are several events to look forward to this autumn. First up is a pint down the pub with our local MP, Ed Vaizey. As both of the projects mentioned above fall within Ed’s portfolio as Minister for Culture and the Digital Economy, we are sure he will be interested Call Trish: 01367 820060 in your views. Due to his busy schedule, this event has had to be re-arranged for 10th October. On 21st October, the Chamber of Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Commerce will be hosting another one of its popular speed Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk networking evenings. Lastly, details will soon be available for the annual black tie “Community Ball” which will be held at the Sudbury House Hotel on Saturday 22nd November. The Far Runners are a Watch this column for further announcements. Faringdon based social running group who will be writing a new column each month with some of their favourite routes around the local area as well as reviews of nearby events. Here they are outside Budgens recently, recognising the fact that Simon Tiensa has generously supported the group in the purchase of some fetching running vests! Since the Far Runners started 18 months ago the group has gone from strength to strength. Originally there were just six members but now we have around 40 regular runners. The ethos of the Far Runners is to encourage people of all abilities to enjoy running and to make sure no-one ever gets left behind as one of the leaders always stays with the slowest runner at the back. We have three leaders: Marea Brown, Andrea Plant and Linda Woodward. We are a fun, inclusive, friendly group who don't take things too seriously. Our members range in age from teens to sixty-something's! We have runners of all abilities from elite marathon runners to complete beginners. We break up into different groups so that people can run with someone of a similar ability. We hold social events and enter races together too. If you'd like to come and join us you'd be very welcome. Just turn up at the Old Town Hall at 6.30pm on a Tuesday, 7pm on a Thursday and at the Leisure Centre at 9.30 am on Sundays. Audrina Paisley ~Therapies~

Audrina Paisley Local therapist turns writer After a diverse career in administration, modelling and the film industry, Audrina found herself at home with a young baby and nothing to do. “It occurred to me that I had so much more to give besides changing nappies. I have always been interested in spirituality; I learned to read the tarot cards at 14, and became good at reading for friends.” Audrina decided to re-train in several holistic therapies, and set up her own practice in 2012. She offers Tarot and Chirology (palmistry) readings, and specialises in Indian Head Massage, Hopi Ear Candling, and Colour Healing Therapy, as well as using a little Reiki in her treatments. “Colour Therapy has always been my main passion. Most people think it’s having your colours done, but it’s more about the effect of colour on the emotions, and which colour you need to incorporate into your life at any given time. You can learn a lot about a person from their colour preferences!” Audrina’s proudest moment came in March this year, when her first novel Spiral; The Finding was released on Amazon Kindle. “Spiral was something I started doing when my son was tiny. It kept me sane during the naptime hours!” In Spiral’s bleak view of medieval Scotland, teenaged midwife Rosie MacBain is skilled at what she does; whether that be delivering a baby, setting a bone, or keeping her four orphaned sisters from the brink of destitution. But on the day her youngest sister discovers an ancient piece of silver buried on their land, an old face from Rosie’s childhood returns to the village. From that moment on, Rosie must decide which is more important to her; her craft, her sisters, her love...or her life. Spiral is the first in a saga, and Audrina has an unaffiliated novel in the works, which is due for release next year. Details of Audrina’s practice, events and books can be found on her website at www.audrinapaisley.co.uk, as well as her contact details for booking treatments or readings.

Lets Talk about Whisky

0 0 0 1

Have you ever thought about what makes the dram in your glass taste as it does? Obviously, the initial processes of malting, fermenting and distilling play their part by producing the new make spirit that contains the ‘DNA’ of the individual distillery but you may be surprised to learn that the cask a whisky is matured in contributes around 60%+ to the final flavour profile. Historically, casks of many different types were used for whisky as it was more about the fact that they were a convenient container for transporting spirit than about the attributes they could give. However, it gradually became apparent that the cask type had a significant influence on the whisky and nowadays maturation is mostly carried out in either ex-bourbon or ex-sherry casks – mostly ex-bourbon as they are currently the cheaper option. Bourbon casks are made from American White Oak and this tends to produce whisky that will have vanilla, honey, citrus/orchard fruit, and nut characteristics. Additionally, the Bourbon cask will have been charred during the production process and the carbon char will extract much of the sulphur elements from the spirit. By contrast, sherry casks are made from European oak which is more tannic and is toasted not charred, which leads to more dried fruit/Christmas cake flavours and a rich, darker coloured whisky. There is occasionally some deviation from this straight forward split as Highland Park have American Oak casks made that then have sherry in them before being used for maturing their whisky and they combine varying proportions of these with their European Oak matured spirit. Obviously cask size, time spent in the cask, storage conditions and other factors also have an impact on the character of whisky but the taste and aroma differences between whiskies matured in different cask types is perhaps what is most easily discerned. The best way to experience this is to try a few different ones so here are some suggestions. Ex-Bourbon cask matured Kilkerran Bourbon Wood Work In Progress 6 – nutty, creamy and sweet it is interesting to compare and contrast to the Kilkerran Sherry Wood (see below) Balvenie Single Barrel 12 year old – showcases the typical vanilla oakiness, sweet fruits and honey of an ex-bourbon cask matured whisky Auchentoshan 18 year old – citrus and nuts blend with caramel to produce a smooth and complex whisky Ex-Sherry cask matured Kilkerran Sherry Wood Work In Progress 6 – dark chocolate, dried fruits and toffee, a real treat! Glenfarclas 15 year old – fruitcake, cinnamon, sherry and spices, a true classic GlenDronach 21 year old – just looking at the fabulous dark liquid will give you an idea of the rich plum pudding and spice combined with smooth tannins that lies within, absolutely luscious. What will your favourite be?

Talk to the Vet!

Hello again and a warm welcome, to some September musings – the month after our big local White Horse Show and with additional local ones to come this month. As I write, occasional heavy downpours are interrupting the steady sunshine; the butterflies are busy in the grassland and trees and no doubt barbeques are busily smoking everywhere! ..which leads me to a new FAO and WHO report on the top 10 food borne parasites; in the top half of the list is the pork tapeworm, the dog hydatid tapeworm, the PETS passport Echinococcus tapeworm, Toxoplasma and the waterborne Cryptosporidia protozoans…the report does list ways to reduce the risk of getting infected, which includes well-composted organic fertilisers, clean not poor water quality especially when fruit and veg need washing, and finally, regarding outdoor cooking, to make sure that all meat is well cooked!! The PETS scheme for travelling pets requires that all relevant pet species are treated for the Echinococcus parasite within 1 and 5 days prior to entering sovereign British territory. As I’ve said before, this is for HUMAN health and the tick treatment, for ANIMAL health, is no longer mandatory. Just for the record, we have had a case of Ehrlichiosis, caused by the TICK-borne blood infection of an obligate intracellular bacterial parasite called Ehrlichia canis, in a dog from the Eastern Mediterranean. This long-term disease shows initially as enlarged lymph nodes, fever, weakness, anaemia, inflamed blood vessels and can lead to general haemorrhage. This disease is transmitted by the Brown Dog Tick (Rhipicephalus). This tick can be killed and repelled by products put on the coat before travel, NOT legally mandatory, ones that every veterinary practice can advise you on before your pet travels. Or not, if the Tunnel train breaks down and 6 hours are spent before the rescue of the passengers – and what about the dogs left in their cars still on the train? I have to confess that I caution anyone taking their dog/s further south than the top level of mid-France, where the risk map is covered in red downwards. Can animal welfare be fully supported and that’s without the ambient temperatures at each location? A subject which we will be discussing at the Practice with our clients more formally. I accept that many of you who travel responsibly with a pet, do so very well and have a great time. Warm evenings are also likely times that the controversial Chinese lanterns are being released. I found two, close together, in fields where my livestock graze. One concession has been the change from the dangerous wires supporting both the canopy and burner to the new bamboo rims and cross-threads of nylon in the ones I found. From the wind direction and final resting positions of these two dying objects, they actually floated, probably still glowing, over the very top of neighbouring open-sided barns full of hay! What a calamity if that hay had been set alight! What a worse calamity it would be if the bamboo rim splintered in a sheep or cow’s mouth as they chewed it, then swallowed and puncturing the oesophagus or a stomach. In my opinion, can organisers and users of these lanterns please check wind and weather and think of problems that even this new design will still cause? Or, better still, NOT use them at all. Thinking of flying, the RSPB have reported that Phase II of the NI Red Kite Reintroduction Project has been completed. The Project is jointly run by the RSPB, the Welsh Kite Trust and the Golden Eagle Trust. Twenty-seven red kites were released in County Down in 2008, with five birds fledged in July 2010 – the first there for over 200 years. Observations will continue until the population becomes self-sustaining, and the RSPB will continue to raise awareness of the continued, unwarranted persecution that kites face, including a number of poisoning incidents which are against the law and fly in the face of animal welfare. How many of us here take the opportunity to stop and watch a kite circle and dive down with such consummate skill and precision, as masters of the prevailing wind? A lesser known fact is that 25 years ago, on 1st August, five birds were released into the Chilterns. There are now over 1000 breeding pairs that have spread out across England to create a sustainable, balanced distribution, when not confused by extra feeding and resulting in an excess density of birds than Nature can sustain, unless much planning has gone into it. One example is Gigrin Farm in mid-Wales, working with the Welsh Kite Trust and the RSPB. Birds and lists – Big Garden Birdwatch 2014 still lists the House Sparrow as #1, although these busy little birds remain on the Red (for danger) List due to a 62% drop in their numbers since 1979. The Grey Squirrel was the top mammal, being seen in 72% of respondents’ gardens. Finally another plug for micro-chipping your pets. It is reported that a postman made an unscheduled special delivery of a feline stowaway in his post van, which had travelled from Southampton to Berkshire. After this 67 mile journey, the Staff at the Battersea Dog and Cats Home in Old Windsor couldn’t locate any micro-chip. Cats and curiosity!.. Now the tortie and white cat has the name “Jess” but I don’t know whether the very caring postman was called Pat? This must demonstrate the importance of micro-chipping as no-one knows how far and by what means they travel. Wherever YOU are travelling, do it safely and enjoy the company of your smallest member of your family, your pet. Thank you for staying on this rollercoaster journey with me – see you next month!

Blackberries

Rob.. The Cheese Man! Best selection.. Best Cheese..

For me, September heralds autumn. I know it's going to start cooling down a little and we are all going to be rewarded with an amazing bounty, all ready to harvest. The colours, fragrance and textures of food at this time begin to get us ready for cold winter nights, lighting the fire, drawing the curtains and hunkering down. A favourite pastime in our family is foraging and there are so many things you can find in the hedgerows. Pop along to the library to find a book to help you out if you decide to go. There's a great one by Richard Mabey which is worth a flick through. Anyway, the fruit I have in mind is the incomparable blackberry. With its beautiful knobbly appearance and unique flavour, the blackberry is really rather regal. On the one hand I am pleased that people don't seek them out these days and take a container with them when they take a stroll to collect these little beauties but on the other, it seems rather a shame that it is a lost practice. It is, after all, free food and rather good food at that. Picking blackberries is quite therapeutic too, and rather addictive as it goes. To reach the best and most plump is almost a competition! I love to just pack the blackberries up into a bag and then freeze them. They have a marvellous ability of staying free flowing so that when you need to use them, you can just bring out however many you need, all year round. Making jam is rather essential too. Cook the blackberries down until just beginning to soften then add the equivalent weight in jam sugar. Dissolve then bubble for around 10-15 minutes until it sets when you spoon on to a cold plate. The smell of cooked berries is so wonderful, I have it in mind to use them for a quick budget pudding. Pop down to Kwiksave and purchase a box of blackberries with a sheet of ready rolled puff pastry. Unroll on to a baking sheet - no need for parchment, it's on some already. Preheat the oven to 200°/ gas mark 6. Mix together 50g ground almonds with a little apple juice to make a thick paste. Spread over the pastry leaving a border of around an inch. Cover liberally with berries then bake for 20-30 minutes until puffed and golden. Warm a little dark coloured jam then brush to glaze whilst everything is still warm. Hey presto! Pudding is served.

‘First Childhood’, by Lord Berners This is Lord Berners’ first autobiographical book, written in 1941, and takes the reader from his early childhood memories up to his first four terms at Elmley. There are 25 short chapters, each concentrating on particular persons, places or events. Born in 1883, Lord Berners’ first memory is at his grandparents’ house, Arley, where he is aware of a screen of brightly coloured pictures cut-out and pasted. Arley House continued to be very important to him and in the Epilogue Lord Berners reflects that the ‘change at Arley cast a benumbing spell (deprived of emotional feeling) upon the closing years of my childhood’. As an only child, it could often be a solitary life. Sometimes companions would be grown-ups, such as Mrs. Matchett, the Housekeeper at Arley, whom he fondly referred to as a ‘Fairy Godmother’. Children and adults from the neighbourhood were invited to the house as friends for Lord Berners. Sometimes this arrangement worked well, but at other times it proved unsatisfactory; there is a wonderful story about Nesta and the Stokes boys in a haystack. Two elderly ladies, widely travelled, and with whom Lord Berners spent many happy hours, sparked a love of travel which remained with him. His mother was particularly influential; she was ‘one of the most natural people I’ve ever known’ and ‘we were very happy in one another’s company’. His father he describes as a ‘curious, moody, rather brilliant creature’ who showed a lack of interest in Lord Berners and was seldom around. At aged 7, the local Curate was brought in to teach the young boy, followed by a governess from Geneva, Mademoiselle Bock. Lord Berners’ sense of mischief is at play in the subsequent exit of this young lady. From Chapter 12 onwards the book is largely about his time at the preparatory school, Elmley, which sometimes is frightening for vulnerable young boys. It is Lord Berners’ first time away from home and the emotions are sometimes raw. He recalls there were ‘two large flies in the ointment of my school life’: the Headmaster, and his growing awareness that he is ‘not good at games’. There is a delightful interlude about one of the summer holidays. Some of the character of Lord Berners is evident in this book: his need to make friends, his imagination and creativity, his sense of inferiority (seen through a lack of ‘physical strength and superiority in games’ and ‘manliness’), and his (oftenhindered) solace in the Arts and in music particularly. But throughout this time his sense of humour and mischief, understandably dimmed at times, is never lost. The vocabulary used does reflect his classical learning, but nevertheless it is an easy-going style. I often found myself chuckling, not only by the events themselves, but also by the way it is written. This is a fascinating book as an introduction to Lord Berners. Wine & Preservation We are given the warning that drinking an entire bottle of wine is bad for our health, whilst at the same time; we are told that if any wine is left in the bottle, it would be ‘off’ by the very next day. Arrhhh, the inner torment, what to do; health or off wine?? Some enthusiasts will say only wimps leave anything left in the bottle, but there are many variables that must be taken into account. Alcoholic strength is right up there on the list; especially if you plan to operate heavy machinery or drive a vehicle! Reports indicate that alcohol remains in your system an hour for every unit. One 175ml glass of average strength alcohol, say 12% abv is 2.1 units of alcohol (according to the NHS website). Doing the maths, a 750ml bottle of wine of this strength contains 4.3 x 175ml glasses, or the equivalent of (2.1 x 4.3), which is near on 9 units and obviously will be more if the alcoholic strength is higher. If this is consumed prior to the body having time to break it down, the alcohol remains in the system until the morning. Without turning this into a lecture or guilt trip, the point being made is that sometimes it is a necessity to save some wine for tomorrow! There are various ways of doing this, with the number of options and gadgets on the market growing daily. The most readily available (from good homeware/kitchen shops RRP £8-£10) and one I use regularly is the Vacu Vin. This works by hand pumping a gadget (bicycle pump style) over the top of the re-usable rubber stopper that is placed inside the bottle of wine. This forcibly vacuums the remaining air out of the bottle and slows down the oxidation process. Another to enter the market is the Aircork, a small device that blows up a rubbery grape shaped balloon inside the bottle, sealing the wine from any oxygen (Ebay $29.95 USD + postage). There are also complicated and expensive devices in bars that enable wine to be served by the glass, but these are maintenance-heavy and better suited to bars rather than dwellings. An enthusiast’s device is the USA invention, the Coravin. It is claimed to revolutionise the way we store and drink wine, working on a syringe principle, whereby the wine is extracted and replaced with inert gas, without even uncorking the bottle! It has taken 14 years and 23 prototypes to get on to the market and is available to purchase online direct from the manufacturer in Massachusetts, USA for a mere $299.00 USD + $58 delivery. Despite the lavish price tag and being aimed at the aficionados, the wine trade sees it as a great development. Many a Restaurateur has bottles that they rarely sell due to the market limits of expensive wines. The revolutionary Coravin will enable them to sell wine by the glass, without even having to take out the cork! English Classes Students can join English classes at any time and we welcome visiting students. In class we practice speaking, listening, reading and writing skills along with learning new vocabulary and grammar. We aim to make classes fun and interesting for our students and we also run lots of exciting cultural activities and visits. Both group and private lessons are available to suit all abilities (from beginner through to advanced) and the Language Centre is open for English classes in the morning each weekday. Students can elect to sit diploma examinations in English on completion of their courses from the Cambridge Examination Board and we also run examination preparation lessons at the Language Centre. Foreign Language Classes We hold evening classes at the Language Centre in French, Spanish, German and Italian. The Language Centre offers a wide range of evening classes to suit all abilities - from complete beginner to advanced conversationalist. Most courses take place in the evening, although some may be available during the day, depending on numbers of students. Classes are normally one and a half hours per week over 12 weeks, and they are designed to develop all four language skills - speaking, understanding, reading and writing - with an emphasis on speaking and understanding in the class sessions. Evening courses are open to adults and are designed to give greater confidence in speaking a foreign language, whether for travel, work or just for fun. From September we will be running classes for beginners in French, German, Italian and Spanish and classes for improvers in French, Spanish and Italian. For registration information and enquiries about attending courses at the Language Centre, contact the Language Centre Manager, Sally Kershaw on 01793 784881 or Email: dalc@talktalkbusiness.net

YOGA and YOGA FOR PREGNANCY CLASSES Emma Courtnadge has taught Yoga for 6 years and now offers classes in Faringdon and Watchfield. Emma began learning Yoga while working as an Engineer, where regular practice kept her fit and focused in her profession. However, when she became unwell with a brain tumour, Yoga became an important source from which to draw strength. Yoga boosted her self-esteem, self-discipline and well-being both physically and mentally and her recovery inspired Emma to teach Yoga. She is now the mother of 4 year old twins and the wife of a serving officer in the RAF. Yoga continues to inspire her daily while she manages her own business around military family life. You can join Emma’s classes during September in Faringdon and Watchfield. Her aim is to provide mindful and inspiring Yoga for all to enjoy, no matter your ability. YOGA CLASSES available Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings in Watchfield, and Saturday mornings in Faringdon. A balance of physical activity, breath control and mindfulness, which benefits all aspects of life, both physically and mentally. PREGNANCY YOGA CLASSES available Saturday mornings in Faringdon. A specialized Yoga class which helps encourage fetal development and prepares mum for birth, helping her feel confident, calm and in control. Yoga is an excellent way to relieve the symptoms of pregnancy as your baby grows and body changes. Contact Emma for bookings or look online for more info email:echoyoga@aol.co.uk Tel: 07968593943

EXERCISE SELECTION

We have stressed the importance of including resistance/strength training in your exercise program before, but not gone into detail as to what this should essentially include. Many who venture into resistance training are limiting their results with poor exercise selection. So, we are going to give you some basic movements you should use as a priority that will always keep you on track. Below is a list of 7 movements, known as ‘the basics’. These should make up the foundation of 90% of gym goers programs, whether your goals are fat burning, muscle building or sports performance. Hip Dominant Exercise Examples include: Deadlifts, Hip Thrusts, Glute Bridges. Hip dominant exercises focus mainly on the posterior chain, think glutes and hamstrings. Knee Dominant Exercise Examples include: Back Squat, Front Squat, Goblet Squat. These exercises, although involving other muscles, are primarily for targeting your quads. Unilateral Leg Exercise Examples include: Lunge, Step Up, Split Squat. These target the whole leg whilst helping to increase hip mobility and stop any muscular imbalances between the legs. Horizontal Pulling Exercise Examples include: Cable Rows, Dumbbell Rows, Face Pulls. These exercises target the muscles of the upper back and are of critical importance for maintaining good posture and shoulder girdle health. Horizontal Pushing Exercise Examples include: Chest Press, Bench Press, Press Up. These target the muscles of your chest, shoulders and triceps. Vertical Pulling Exercise Examples include: Chin/Pull Ups, Lat Pull Down. Another movement for your upper back and arms. Examples include: Dumbbell Vertical Push Exercise Shoulder Press, Barbell Overhead Press. This movement targets your shoulders and arms. This list should be paramount over all other exercises. Why? All these exercises are multi joint, therefore using more muscles and thus increasing the efficiency of your workout. By doing these 7 movements you are hitting every major muscle in your body. They balance each other out, helping to maintain healthy joints and good mobility. They are functional and similar to real life movements. For example the Deadlift teaches perfect lifting technique and strengthens the back ready for moving heavy objects. If you want to implement these into your training regime but are unsure of the technique make sure to ask a gym instructor to help or book some personal training sessions to make sure they are done correctly. This will also be useful if you have any injury or mobility issues preventing you from executing the exercises properly. We can give you alternatives that will help you progress towards the above movements.
