has been painting for as long as she can remember. After attending Leeds Art College she followed a career in teaching until, deciding life is too short, gave this up in 2004 to paint full time. Christina uses paint to great effect to create the depth of fleece found in many breeds of sheep whilst the simplicity of a white or grey background serves to emphasise the lonely, uncompromising moods of a Yorkshire winter. She is represented at carefully selected galleries in the north of England and was featured in the Dales Diary television programme in 2008. Her work has travelled as far as Australia, Canada, France, USA, Poland, Austria and even Japan as well as being widely collected in the UK. Faringdon Business Breakfast Club The Faringdon Business Breakfast Club is looking for volunteers to assist with an exciting project championed by a group of members. Coderdojo is an initiative to help young people learn how to use computer code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and more. In order to set-up a group, there needs to be a critical mass of adults to get involved – no IT experience is necessary. The target group would be taken from years 5, 6 or 7. For more details contact Mary Thomas on mary@concisetraining.net At FBBC’s November meeting, Ellis Bardsley from ActionCoach presented on “Five Ways to Grow Your Business”. A selfconfessed “petrol head” Ellis used motoring metaphors to illustrate his talk – such as the need to have a decent “chassis” for your business. He then briskly went through the five steps of generating profit – lead generation, conversion, number of transactions, average sale and profit margin. By tweaking each of these items just a little, ended up with a spectacular increase in the bottom line. Next month, FBBC will have no speaker, but there will be a return of our popular one-to-one mini meeting format where, after breakfast, attendees will be able to arrange three short sessions with other members – a sort of “speed networking” - but a bit more sedate! FBBC, is an informal networking group which has been running since 2004. It meets on the first working Monday of each month at 7.30am at the Sudbury House Hotel. There is no joining fee and no restriction on who may attend, the only cost is your breakfast – just £10. If you are interested in coming to a future meeting, please visit the club’s website http://www.fbbcnetworking.co.uk or reserve your place by calling 0845 003 1340 or e-mailing paul.brame@morgan-cole.com FBBC is also on twitter and LinkedIn, follow us on @FaringdonBBC

The Coffee Shop on the ground floor is open for business, and so is the hair salon, cm Hair first floor. Lisa Moore, a popular local photographer, will have a studio on the second floor. Lesley is passionate about great coffee and only supports makes from a sustainable and ethical source. The house roast is acquired by direct trade from one group of farmers in Nicaragua. Talk to the Vet A Christmas potpourri of events this month – with Christmas and a New Year to look forward to. ! | The Advertiser | page 8 |

At Christmas time many families are given pets as gifts- especially dogs. While that is a lovely idea, and children love puppies, there are a lot of people who do not realise the ongoing commitment and expense involved in having a pet. So think carefully before giving a pet as a gift. Always be careful to buy from a reliable source. It is always good purchase practice to ask about an animal’s background and to see the puppy with its mother. If there’s any paperwork, get it checked – and NO service area or lay-by exchanges. Leading up to Christmas-time, there will be many fund raising animal charity sales to support their essential work. Your own practice may have charity goods for sale. We have our Open Morning on the 7th December, when anyone can come in to purchase goods from our sponsored charities. These are The Labrador Rescue Trust, Trindledown Farm of the National Animal Welfare Trust, Sunshine Cat Rescue and the Oak & Furrow wildlife charity. Goods will continue to be available for sale throughout December. The 10,000th rescued Labrador Retriever in the 25 years of the Trust has been placed in her permanent home. Ruby was about 2 years old, coming into The Trust after being found wandering the streets of a south coast town, taken to the dog pound, was micro-chipped and the original owner traced, no-one bothered to collect her. Fortunately, instead of the statutory “disposal” after 7 days, the Council, having links with the local LRT branch, contacted the local volunteer. From an experienced foster home, Ruby has been adopted by a caring, knowledgeable family who understand her needs and she has a very loving home for the rest of her life. For your interest, ANY Labrador Retriever can be enrolled into the LRT Forever Scheme for a very modest £10 fee, to take all records and contact numbers in a special Forever register, and when an owner can no longer care for their dog, the LRT takes that dog into care , rehomes and takes responsibility for him or her for the rest of the dog’s life. ALL existing adopted LRT dogs are automatically enrolled. Companion dogs will also be cared for and adopted together with the Labrador. What a brilliant scheme, so reassuring for many people. Details of contacts for this are available at the Open day. This is a charity event, my Staff are giving their off-duty time free and the Practice only offers a roof and car park. Do join us if you can!It just remains for me to wish you, dear Reader, and your pet companion/s a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous, healthy New Year, 2014 Robert. Robert Elliott

We’ll take a break from our tour of the Scottish islands this month to take a look at some festive drams for you to enjoy or to give to a loved one. First of all, a quick reminder of some points to remember if you’re buying for someone else. Ÿ Do you know what style of whisky the recipient likes? A look through their whisky collection may give you some answers or some casual questions dropped into conversation… Ÿ Are they happy to try whisk(e)y from a country other than Scotland? Ÿ What’s your budget? Starting at the lighter end of the spectrum, one of our favourite drams is the AnCnoc 12 year old. This light, elegant and yet complex dram comes from the Highlands and is a delight. Smooth, citrusy, spicy and amazing value for money. Or why not ditch your prejudices and go for a blended whisky? The Asyla has a very high malt content (50%) and its delicate flavours of vanilla-cream, cereals and apple-like fruit make it a perfect aperitif before Christmas dinner… Moving onto the richer style of whiskies, you could indulge in one of the ever popular sherry matured GlenDronachs (the 21 year old is my current preference) or for something a little different you could move away from the malts and try the intriguing Hibiki 12 year old. This Japanese blend is described as ‘A symphony of over thirty whiskies ranging between 30 and 12 years of age finished in an Umeshu (plum wine) cask’ and it yields superb flavours of sherry, plums, citrus, cloves and spices that are perfect for Christmas! For the peat lovers amongst you I make no excuse for recommending again the fabulous Lagavulin Distillers Edition. Others that would definitely be welcome in my Christmas stocking are the rich, fruity, sweet and smoky Peat Monster plus two relative newcomers – the Bowmore Tempest Batch 4 (more peat than you normally get with Bowmore and incredibly smooth for a 10 year old) and Talisker Storm (which takes the peppery smoke and spices of the 10 year old and ramps them up a notch). Finally, one of the ultimate Christmas drams has to be the Orangerie. Created by that clever chap, John Glaser, this is a smooth, soft whisky that has been infused with zest of Navalino oranges, Indonesian cassia bark and Sri Lankan cloves to produce Christmas in a glass! Whichever dram you choose to raise over the festive period, Ken and I wish you a very Happy Christmas and New Year. Sláinte!

One thing that I truly enjoy about living in England is the seasons. Following nature’s lead, winter brings with it a time to slow down and rest following a busy, yet enjoyable summer. Bursting through this time of stillness enters Christmas with all its festivities, closely followed by New Year’s Eve. The tendency this time of the year is to usually steer towards sipping a lovely tipple of sumptuously raisined port by a roaring fire, whilst reading a novel … but somewhere inside, the suppressed cocktail mixer is bursting to make a come back! For those of you who are wondering what to serve when entertaining friends (or who are deviously looking for some type of alcoholic beverage to knock out an unsuspecting or annoying relative) during this holiday season, look no further! Here are some Festive Cocktails to try at home…. Poinsettia Fizz (Champagne, Prosecco or Cava depending on the budget or how many you’ve had already!) 15 mls Cointreau or Triple Sec Orange Liqueur 90 mls Cranberry Juice Chill all the ingredients beforehand. Pour the Cointreau and cranberry juice into a chilled Champagne flute, stirring well. Top with the fizz. Santa’s Sleigh White sugar crystals, preferably coarse 2 cups of eggnog (home made is best but if you cheat, we won’t tell!) ½ cup of Brandy, ½ cup Amaretto liqueur, 1 tsp ground nutmeg 2 scoops vanilla ice cream, 4 cinnamon sticks. Dampen the rims of 4 martini glasses and then line the rims with sugar crystals. Combine eggnog, brandy, amaretto, nutmeg and ice cream in a blender until smooth. Serve in martini glasses and garnish with a whole cinnamon stick.

Mistletoe Punch 100g caster sugar, ½ tsp ground cinnamon, 50 mls dark rum Juice of 1 lime, 500 mls dry cider, Apples to garnish Place the sugar and ground cinnamon in a pan with 100 mls water and gently heat whilst stirring to dissolve the sugar. Simmer for 6-8 minutes. Add the rum, lime juice and cider, simmer. Pour into four latte glasses (clear glasses with handles) and garnish with a slice of apple. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum and replace the cider with apple juice. (Recipe courtesy of Budgens). Festive Fizz The good people of Codorniu are full of the festive spirit, producing the limited edition Christmas Cava, brightly packaged in snowflakes! Codorniu Extra Brut NV is produced from the traditional Spanish grape varieties of macabeo, parellada and xarel-lo. This sparkling wine is a dry, light bodied with aromas and flavours of green apple, citrus, almond and brioche. The finish is crisp, clean and fresh and would be a perfect mixer for any of the cocktails, or perfect on its own as party fizz! Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year! Lets talk about books !

The Light Behind the Window is another book of two stories interwoven, one past and one present. The "present" starts in Gassin, South of France during the spring of 1998. Emilie de la Martinieres has never enjoyed having an aristocratic background. More than anything she wanted to be loved by her parents. When her father was alive and not absorbed in his hobbies and his rare book collection, he showed Emilie as much affection as he could, but sadly her mother was more interested in spending money and showing off her wealth. After the death of her mother she finds herself alone in the world and the sole inheritor of her grand childhood home, a magnificent chateau and vineyard. Emilie begins to be intrigued by the Chateau and its memorabilia, so she decides to find out as much as she can about her family history. The "past" takes us to London 1943 where a young office clerk, Constance Carruthers, is drafted into the SOE and is sent to Paris as a spy. Separated from her contact in her first few hours, she is sheltered by a wealthy family who are caught up in the dangerous intricacies of the Resistance. Constance finds herself drawn into a complex web of deception, the repercussions of which will affect generations to come. This is a heartwarming story, it is well written and easy to read and has a happy ending - what more could you want? I enjoyed it and finished in a few days, finding it undemanding and entertaining. I have read two of her earlier novels "Hothouse Flower" and "The Girl on the Cliff" and enjoyed them too - I think that if you like any one of them then you will like them all. Lucinda Riley was born in Ireland and during her childhood she travelled extensively abroad, particularly to the Far East. She went to drama school in London and became an actress working in film, theatre and television. (She appeared in Auf Wiedersehen Pet in 1984) At the age of 24, under the name of Lucinda Edmonds, she wrote her first novel "Lovers and Players" based on her experiences as an actress. She wrote a further 7 novels before taking a break to have 4 children. Under the name of Lucinda Riley she wrote her next novel "Hothouse Flower" (The Orchid House), first published in 2010 and it was selected by the famous Richard and Judy book-club. She followed it with "The Girl on the Cliff". Both these books became international best sellers. Her latest novel "The Midnight Rose", set in India and Devon will be available on 16th January 2014. A word of warning if you are thinking of purchasing "The Light Behind The Window" - it is also published under the title "The Lavender Garden" which I think is its American title. Both editions are for sale and reportedly they are not both the same price. Happy Reading .................

This month the Chamber of Commerce has completely revamped its on-line presence by launching a brand new website and has also set up a facebook page and a twitter feed. The website is designed and hosted by Chamber member, Jason Davenport A further part of the communication strategy will be pulling together a directory of local businesses, which will be exclusively available to members. The Chamber is also finalising the contents of a survey which will be sent out to all members and prospective members at the end of the month. The object of this survey is to communicate with local businesses and gather feedback upon what they expect from their local Chamber of Commerce. This month’s Chamber meeting also discussed initial observations following the opening of the new Tesco store and went onto consider several ongoing projects including bids for funding through the New Homes Bonus Scheme to continue support for the Faringdon Loyalty Card and an extension of the provision of hanging baskets to other areas of the town. The Chamber is also looking at how to work with the Town Council on formulating an Economic Development Plan for the town centre. Faringdon is facing many challenges at the moment and we feel that all stakeholders need to come together to help put a strategy in place to maximise investment in our town and its sustainability in the future. Earlier this month, the Chamber of Commerce facilitated a small group of people to visit the Tesco store on Park Road on the eve of its opening. Carl Pettersson, the store manager, gave the delegation a quick look behind the scenes before a cup of tea and a cake in the staff room. Representatives from the Town Council attended including the town mayor, David Price as well as members of a variety of voluntary community groups such as FAZE, Pink Pigeons, town twinning and FollyFest. The Faringdon Chamber of Commerce is affiliated to the Oxford Town Chambers Network. The Chamber meets in Faringdon on the second Monday of each month. Hula Hoop Classes Monday evenings at 6.45pm The Old Crown Coach Inn.

Hi!‌. my name is Billie. Early this year I saw a friend dancing with a hoop, it looked fun so I picked it up to have a go and instantly fell in love. Hooping is very rhythmic, so although some tricks can be hard to master, once it clicks, its such a buzz to learn a new trick, just so much fun to play around with, learning new ways to move the hoop and move my body. Hooping for me is about finding a new hobby that's fun and interesting, while making amazing new friends and staying active. I love seeing the joy hooping brings to people and I want to bring it to you. Please call Billie on 07854242057 for details. Not sure if hooping is for you? Special offer one off taster evening only £4, hoops provided for you. Please email me at hoopsters@hotmail.co.uk for your hoop space.

Bubbles!.

Margo Manning’s

Cakes & Pie’s for sale at the Christmas Craft Fayre in the Corn Exchange December 14th 10-2 pm

Enjoying the Christmas and new year festivities is always helped along by drinking something bubbly, I think! Be it a drop of cava, pink lemonade or champagne even. It just seems to make you feel good. Perhaps it is something in those little bubbles going up your nose! I am partial to it at any time of the year really, but the holiday season is perfect to appreciate a bit of luxury. All year is spent paying the bills and living everyday life so why not spoil yourselves now with a bit of something special. Champagne is wonderful although most of the time I plump for prosecco or cava, the former being my favourite. I think that adding a little creme de cassis or even a framboise liqueur is really delicious too. Or if you want to be decadently English, add homemade sloe gin or rhubarb vodka.

But drinking a tipple full of bubbles is not the only way to serve it. I love making jelly with a drop of cava or flavoured up lemonade. You perhaps could use the prosecco or maybe even gin and tonic! And a fruit liqueur as we talked about earlier. The possibilities are endless! And the whole point of it all is that the bubbles get captured and burst in each mouthful! Using cava in a sauce for fish or chicken is fantastic too. It may seem a waste but is really worth it. To make a sophisticated pudding which serves 6 first of all choose your bubbly, you will need 500ml. Make a syrup with 250ml water and 50g sugar by dissolving over a low heat. Once the liquid is clear turn up the heat and bubble for 2-3 minutes. Take 5 leaves gelatine and soak in enough cold water to cover. Leaf gelatine is so easy to use, so be brave and go for it if you have only ever used powdered, you may be liberated! Soaking it in cold water makes it really soft. Once it is so, squeeze out a little and then drop in to the warm syrup. Stir well then let this cool a while! Add your bubbly and then any other cordial or flavouring you like. Pour in to 6 lovely glasses and chill for around 4 hours. Serve with a little swathe of cold whipped cream and enjoy those bubbles! Merry Christmas!

Hi I’m Emily, Your Personal Trainer in Faringdon I specialise in toning, core conditioning and general health and fitness.

Having completed a degree in Biology and a post-grad in education, I went on to teach science at secondary school for 11 years, before deciding to follow my love of exercise training as a new career. I am qualified in teaching Les Mills group exercise programs to music, including BODYCOMBAT™, BODYATTACK™, BODYPUMP™ and CXWORX™. My personal training sessions are tailored to each individual’s personal goals, and can incorporate elements from these exercise programs, as well as the use of kettlebells, Vibrogym, GTS (Gravity Training System) and TRX (suspension training). In short, there’s something for ‘EveryBody’! If this type of training interests you

Healthy Tips

How to Lose Belly Fat The outside of our bodies gives us clues as to what is going on inside. Apart from eating too much food and not exercising, certain hormones (chemical messengers) can direct fat to be stored in certain areas of the body including the belly. However a protruding belly is not always caused by fat; it can be an indication that the liver is weak resulting in fluid leaking into the sac around the abdomen giving a ‘potbelly’ appearance. There are things you can do to correct the problem of weight around your tummy. If you improve both the health of your liver and your ability to burn visceral fats (the deep fat surrounding your inner organs) the size of your waist will reduce. Start Strength Training Working out with weights can significantly decrease your abdominal fat and improve your insulin sensitivity (your ability to deal with sugars). Strength training helps to burn belly fat by building muscle which boosts your resting metabolic rate. It only takes a minor adjustment to your diet combined with strength training to make your weight loss efforts much easier. The more intense your training is, the more fat-burning hormones your body will create. Strength training and intense exercise also stimulate your growth hormone which is one of your fat burning, muscle-building hormones. Improve Insulin Sensitivity and De-Stress the Liver Reducing your consumption of refined sugars, including sugars such as fruit juices and alcohol, will reduce the stress on the liver. Sugar breaks down so fast it shocks the liver, whereas protein and vegetables take time to break down and release sugars into your body slowly. Raw cruciferous vegetables and small amounts of lean protein are the best foods to reduce the stimulation of insulin and are also healthy for the liver. The healthier your liver is the smaller your pot belly will become and increasing your insulin sensitivity will promote abdominal fat loss. Exercise with Intensity It has been proven that people who train with high intensity have a significant reduction in visceral belly fat. The higher the exercise intensity the higher amounts of calories you burn and the less time is needed to burn belly fat. High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT combines short, alternating intervals of high and low-intensity exercise. It can lead to significant reductions in total body fat, subcutaneous leg and trunk fat and can improve your insulin sensitivity. Why not incorporate HIIT into your strength training routine by doing CIRCUIT TRAINING at the Gym at Carswell? When you achieve the correct fitness program for your body and when your eating regime is right for you, the attack on fat loss will be from all angles and with faster results. Eating nutritious foods in the right quantities along with exercising correctly can be the key to reducing abdominal fat. But remember that it’s just as important to allow your body and mind the time to rest and relax. Get More Sleep Getting enough sleep triggers production of your growth hormone causing your body to burn fat while sleeping. 7-9 hours per night is optimum and most fat burning happens between midnight and 4am. Eat More Protein Eating 25% of calories from protein can lead significantly increase abdominal fat loss. Conclusion Eating healthy fats, good quality lean protein and high-fibre carbohydrates combined with high intensity exercise and plenty of rest creates the best recipe to burn belly fat fast.

Invaision!.. II am getting a lot of emails from people who are desperate to know what has invaded their homes. The windows of a bedrooms, not regularly used, are covered in flies. In the morning they get the vacuum cleaner out and by the evening...well it is time to vacuum again! The answer is the Cluster Fly, Pollenia rudis, similar in size to the house fly but with golden hairs behind the head and on the thorax, (which rub off easily). They are in the Diptera Order, what we refer to as True Flies, and are one of the 120,000 species that we have so far identified. They spend their summer flying happily around meadows eating pollen, nectar and other types of organic matter. When it gets cold in the Autumn they set off to find a nice warm and dry place to overwinter. Who can blame them? The problem is that they love attics, lofts and unused rooms. The next problem is that they overwinter communally - in huge numbers if it has been a good year for them. They will not feed in your home, or breed but they will leave a large amount of fly excrement. Every time the temperature rises in your house they start to get active and look for light - hence the numbers around the window. The best bit though takes place outside and underground. These little chaps go through a parasitic stage in their life cycle. Once the egg hatches the tiny larvae find earthworms. When they have come across their future host, they eat their way under its skin. They have to bury in leaving their spiracles (breathing holes) outside. Then they feed off their hosts living flesh as they grow. When they are ready to pupate they fall off the earthworm and pupate in its tunnel before crawling to the surface to fly away. What is around the window will only be a very small proportion of what is innocently snoozing away in the attic. The Cluster Fly and its population go through boom and bust years, so next year it might not happen again...
