WHO’S NEXT?

Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk there is a chance that the mast will be re-located or even de-commissioned, which could adversely affect the signal in the town. The Chamber of Commerce through treasurer, Sarah Allen-Stevens, have used this contact with Vodafone to initiate discussions of how the town may be serviced in the future, for all networks. This being particularly appropriate as the Vale4Business launch was focusing on ways of promoting business in the Vale of White Horse, including the delivery of superfast broadband and other services such as 4G. This pre-empts the topics for discussions at the forthcoming Faringdon Chamber of Commerce meeting with Tescos, scheduled for Monday 8th July at the Faringdon Town Hall when representatives from Tescos will be present to answer questions about the new store and their plans. Whilst attendance will be restricted to Chamber members, there will be a few places available to others. If you are interested in coming to the meeting or even if you are just interested in posing a question about Tesco’s plans, then please e-mail paul.brame@morgan-cole.com for further details. The Faringdon Chamber of Commerce meets monthly on the second Monday in each month at the Old Crown Coaching Inn from 6:30pm. Please come along and make your views known. If we don’t hear from you, then we don’t know what is on the minds of local businesses, so please do let us know what the Chamber of Commerce may do for you.

Business Update An opportunistic meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone UK was instrumental in getting the mobile phone signal re-instated from the mast at the new Tesco site. Paul Brame, President of the Faringdon Chamber of Commerce, was attending the launch event of the Vale4Business initiative at Williams F1 where Guy Laurence, CEO of Vodafone UK, was a keynote speaker. Paul seized the chance to take Faringdon’s plight right to the top of the organisation. This set in motion a chain of events that led to the mobile signal, which covers a large part of the town including the centre, being reinstated within 48 hours of this meeting. The issue had arisen due to the fact that the contractors clearing the former JDS site, to pave the way for a new Tesco supermarket, had managed to cut through the fibreoptic cable thus rendering the mast useless and leaving hundreds of individual users and many businesses with no means of making or receiving calls or data. Paul commented that following this chance meeting, “I was not expecting anything to happen quickly, but imagine my delight when in my Inbox the next morning was an e-mail from the CEO himself saying that this was being dealt with at the highest level” Whilst the mast is now back in action, there does remain the question over what Tesco’s plans are for this facility

Our Scottish island hopping takes us next to the Isle of Mull, which is certainly an island where the vagaries of the weather can hamper communication and transport (I got stuck there for 2 days once – not that I’m complaining…) There is only one distillery on Mull and this is situated next to the harbour in the pretty town of Tobermory. Rather fittingly it was originally named Ledaig – which is the Gaelic for ‘safe haven’. Tobermory is one of Scotland’s oldest legal distilleries and is a charming place to visit. The site is very compact and the atmosphere laid back, to the extent that one ex-manager of Tobermory told me he had on several occasions found visitors wandering into his onsite living accommodation rather than the distillery! It’s very traditional in style, with the mash tun having a beautiful copper lid, but it does have one point of difference in that the lyne arms that carry the spirit vapour away from the pot still are S-shaped and so some vapour re-condenses before leaving the still and is re-distilled – resulting in a lighter spirit. Tobermory produces two distinctly different types of whisky. The first of these is an unpeated single malt that is light, dry, malty, nutty and fruity in style. The current range consists of just a 10 and a 15 year old. Of these, the 10 year old is most typical of the house style and it proved very popular with the group I visited with (particularly my Dad…). The 15 year old is rather special as it is transferred to an Oloroso sherry cask for the final part of it’s maturation and, although mainly matured on the mainland, returns to its island roots for final maturation resulting in a rich and more coastal dram. The other whisky produced at Tobermory is a peated style that goes under the old distillery name of Ledaig. This is perhaps more what you would expect from an island whisky as along with it’s inherent fruitiness there is a distinct tarry, peaty, spiciness on both the nose and the palate but, surprisingly, also a definite sweetness. Currently, there is only a 10 year old distillery bottling but we also have a Gordon & Macphail bottling that is close to 19 years old and was matured in re-fill sherry butts for a quite different tasting experience.

Lets talk about books ! Best Kept Secret (Clifton Chronicles 3) Jeffrey Archer published March 2013 The exciting saga of the Clifton and Barrington families continues with this third volume...

1945 London: The vote in the House of Lords as to who should inherit the Barrington family fortune has ended in a tie. The Lord Chancellor's deciding vote will cast a long shadow on the lives of Harry Clifton and Giles Barrington. We find Harry, Emma and Giles all living in Barrington Hall. Harry returns to America to promote his latest novel, while Emma stays at home with their son Sebastian – who is a bit of a handful. Emma goes in search of the little girl who was found abandoned in her father's office on the night he was killed, as she and Harry have decided to try to adopt her. Giles becomes engaged to Virginia which upsets the family applecart and the ensuing events cause the relationship to flounder. When the general election is called, Giles Barrington has to defend his seat in the House of Commons and is horrified to discover who the Conservatives select to stand against him. But it is Sebastian who ultimately influences his uncle's fate. In 1957, Sebastian wins a scholarship to Cambridge, and a new generation of the Clifton family enters the storyline. But after Sebastian is expelled from school, he unwittingly becomes caught up in an international art fraud involving a Rodin statue that is worth far more than the sum it raises at auction. Does he become a millionaire? Does he go to Cambridge? Is his life in danger? Best Kept Secret will answer all these questions but, once again, pose so many more. Whatever else is said about Jeffrey Archer, it must be agreed he holds the reader's interest. Best Kept Secret is the third in a series of five books - the first two being Only Time Will Tell and The Sins of the Father. The next two are yet to be written. I did hope that by the time I read this book I wouldn’t have forgotten the events of the first two. However this third episode refers back to the previous two with frequent reminders, which I did find helpful. Again the story was fast moving with interweaving storylines that keep you needing to know what happens next. Goodies and baddies galore - plus intriguing plots. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it although possibly I didn’t become as engrossed as with the first two. Jeffrey Archer keeps you wanting to read more and has cleverly set up the framework for the next in this series which is due to be published in March 2014 – I am looking forward to it already.

Talk to the Vet !

FLY STRIKE KILLS Summer can be a dangerous time for our bunnies if we are not vigilant with their care. Fly strike can be a killer in those warm midsummer months. It occurs when flies lay their eggs where there is an available food source for their larvae. This could be around your rabbits bottom if they are not kept clean. Once the maggots hatch they begin to eat everything around them inflicting pain and – if not attended to – fatal damage to your bunny. Happily there are simple things you can do to avoid this distressing condition. Check and clean your rabbit's bottom at least twice a day Keep living quarters clean, cool and well ventilated If your rabbit seems quiet and listless contact your vet immediately, even if you cannot see any maggots If you do see maggots this is a genuine emergency and your rabbit must be seen by a vet immediately. Here at Danetree Vets we will be only too pleased to offer advice and discuss other preventative measures available. Have a happy and healthy summer with your furry, big eared friends! | The Advertiser | page 11 | Reasons You Should Include Strength Training In Your Fitness Program When people decide get fit, improve their health or lose weight they often start by doing cardiovascular training, either in the form of running or cycling. Although this is preferential to doing nothing they will be missing out on a host of benefits that can be obtained through strength training using either bodyweight, resistance machines or free weights.

Alex Increased Resting Metabolism By adding in strength training to your fitness programme you will be stimulating your muscles to a greater extent than through cardio alone and therefore increase your lean muscle mass - more so for men and not quite so much for women due to the differences in hormones. This increase in muscle raises your resting metabolic rate so that even when resting your body has to burn more calories than before to maintain its current size. That's right, your body burns more calories while you're doing nothing and the more strength training you do the more you'll burn! Burn More Calories During and After Training So you now know that your resting metabolism will increase through strength training. Did you know that by lifting weights you'll also be increasing your metabolism for up to 38 hours after training? This is due to a process called excess post exercise oxygen consumption and it means that the recovery process from weights is much greater than that needed for cardio alone. So you'll be burning more calories and thus burning more fat! Functional Benefits The functional benefits of weight training are vast. Stronger muscles provide more support for joints, help improve posture and drastically reduce the risk of injury from everyday activities. For the elderly it can be particularly beneficial as it can help slow both the natural atrophy of muscles as we age and also ward off osteoporosis by increasing bone density. To anyone participating in a sport it offers great benefits as there is a lot of carryover from strength into sport specific skills. Physical Benefits The reason a lot of people take up weight training is to increase their muscular size and improve shape. Although you will only grow a significant amount if you specifically eat and train to do so (so ladies don't worry about accidentally getting bulky), with a general strength program you will notice increased muscle tone, firmer muscles and more definition. Health Benefits Building muscle tissue increases the demand in the muscle for glucose, so that more glucose is pulled from the bloodstream: blood sugars will not get too high thus reducing the risk of diabetes. It also helps reduce visceral fat (the fat that builds up around organs) further reducing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Many of the same benefits from cardiovascular exercise are also obtained through strength exercise such as an increase in lung capacity and decrease in blood pressure and resting heart rate. So next time you are in the gym consider lifting a few weights!

Wickedly Wonderful Wasps!……… This is now the time of the year when people start to get ever so slightly hysterical. The universal cry to be heard above all others, as everyone gets up and runs away with arms flailing, is undoubtedly, "WASP!". Prepare yourself, wasps belong to the family Vespidae and at present there are 4,000 species known to us. I would like to take this opportunity, whilst on my soapbox, to come to the aid of the lowly wasp. Wasps ARE BENEFICIAL! They feed their grubs on protein. That means they catch insects, such as flies and caterpillars making great pest controllers in your gardens. Wasps will also eat carrion and pollinate plants. They in turn feed others such as birds. There really is a point to wasps other than the one on the end of their beautiful bodies. Wasps will sting it is true but this is in defence, and unlike a bee, an individual can sting many times. A bee sting is barbed and pulls the venom sack out of the bee as she pulls away. This tears her body and she dies as a result. The wasp sting however, is not barbed, so it can easily be retracted. Please believe me when I tell you bees and wasps are out there just getting on with their short lives and not just waiting to hunt you down! The sting itself is the females ovipositor, or egg laying tube, that has evolved into a defence weapon. Living in a colony with only one precious egg laying queen means there is no other use for the ovipositors of the female workers. This is also why male bees and wasps can not sting. All too soon the frosts will be here and the wasps will all die except for the newly mated young Queens who will over winter ready for next year. If you do get a chance to see a wasp nest up close just take a good look at its construction. Built out of chewed up wood entirely by the female workers it is truly a marvel. Inside the cells are all perfect hexagons. Ponder also on the thought that wasps have been making paper long before us humans even learnt to write. That alone should give you respect for the wonderful wasp! Sally-Ann Spence Email:minibeastmayhem@gmail.com Web: www.minibeastmayhem.com Twitter:@minibeastmayhem

A Zest For Lemons!

A zest for lemons. I know that lemons are not grown here in our fair land but they most certainly have been an integral part of our cooking for hundreds of years. Brought over from the Azores in quantity around 1494 apparently, the lemon has wormed it's way in to many sections of our cookery. Sweet or savoury it just works with everything! I kind of hope that we may get some sunshine this year but if not, lemon will lift the spirits and tone of any recipe. It's bright, vibrant flavour picks out many facets of other ingredients and helps a recipe really come alive. Lemon is also high in vitamin c, high in dietary fibre and really low in calories. And boy, do they taste good, especially in a G&T! Even dishes that you wouldn't think of adding lemon to benefit enormously. Pork roasted with lemon and thyme, cubes of lamb leg skewered with lemon wedges for the barbie or big flat field mushrooms roasted with a lemon parsley butter. And of course lemon goes handsomely with fish. A huge wedge with any piece of fish on my plate is the law! Puddings too. Lemon zest grated in to shortbread, or a really easy lemon tart made with condensed milk and loads of lemon juice poured over a crushed biscuit base. The chemical reaction of the acid with the dairy sets the condensed milk enabling you to cut the tart. You could of course pile on billowing meringue and bake until golden for a really easy lemon meringue pie. But for today I thought we would turn our attention to some really summery flavours and something a little radical, perhaps. Go and see the fish man on the market then make this South American dish called ceviche. The lemon juice will 'cook' the fish leaving you with a glorious dish fit for any patio. For 4 people, take around 600g mixed fish. Things like salmon, halibut, tuna and squid are great. Thinly slice and place in to a bowl. Zest and juice 2 lemons and add to the fish then stir carefully together along with a generous pinch of salt and a good grind of pepper. Peel and slice a red onion and finely dice a fat red chilli - not a Birdseye or Thai chilli unless you love it hot - and add those to the fish. Leave to marinate for about an hour. Lastly stir through 100g cooked prawns and 4 tbsp chopped coriander then serve the ceviche on a bed of cucumber sliced with a vegetable peeler in to ribbons. Hope you enjoy it, even if you do have to pretend there is sunshine!

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Back to normal after the May Bank Holiday, FBBC met up at the Sudbury House Hotel, Faringdon on Monday 3rd June, attracting about 20 local businesses and entrepreneurs. After coffee and the opportunity to share contacts, the attendees tucked into a hearty breakfast whilst Club Chairman, Paul Brame kicked off proceedings. Each delegate took the opportunity to stand and introduce their business and the kind of opportunities to which they're looking for referrals: Notable contributors were three Accountants; Lawrence Harrison of Tax-Assist highlighted recent changes to Child Benefit and the need for high earners to review their tax affairs, Steve Chamberlain, Tax adviser and VAT specialist with Critchleys warned of HMRC being more aggressive in pursuing unpaid tax and Jonathan Russell who has added dispute resolution to his already extensive range of business activities. June’s Guest speaker slot was an unusual Social Media ‘double header’ kicked off by Mary Thomas of Concise Training, who spoke of recent developments including the ‘new look’ of Linkedin and the rise of Google plus.

She also highlighted the importance of employers having a comprehensive Social Media policy to avert potential problems, which led neatly in to the presentation of Laura Brown, Employment Law specialist from Morgan Cole LLP who highlighted some recent case studies involving social media misuse by employees. FBBC is an informal Business Networking Club which has been attended by in excess of 300 members during it's 10 year existence. FBBC meets at 7.30 a.m. on the First working Monday of each Month at the Sudbury House Hotel. There is no membership fee and no restrictions on which businesses can attend. More information can be found on the Club's website: http://www.fbbcnetworking.co.uk FBBC's next meeting will be on Monday 1st July when the guest speaker will be Patrick Bird of Interactive Performance Management. Cost will be £10.00 to cover Breakfast and Refreshments. If you'd like to join them, please call the booking line on 0845 003 1340 or email paul.brame@morgan-cole.com to book your place.

Variety this Summer! This Summer, ‘V’ is for Variety! We are spoilt with the abundance of choice of wines on the modern market; a huge variety of styles and flavours fit for every occasion! It alarms me however, that many of us (I am probably one of the worst culprits) fall into the typically of human behavioural patterns, whereby we simply stick to what we know. I recently posed this observation to John in Phillers when I reluctantly decided to change my usual sandwich order (for a fleeting moment…). Needless to say, I hastily reverted back to the ‘old faithful’ (The Tendulkar – YUM!), as it had been tried and tested and thoroughly enjoyed time and again. Is it the fear of investing into the unknown that ties us to familiar territory, or is it the fear of disappointment when it does not live up to our expectations? I propose a challenge: variety! Trying something new, with a focus on white wine (it is TRYING to be summer after all)! Randomly selecting the letter ‘V’, a couple of grape varieties spring to mind – vermentino and Viognier. Vermentino is commonly found throughout the length of Italy and is slowly gaining in recognition. It is suspected to have originated in Spain, migrating to Italy and beyond in the Middle Ages. It has mutated to an estimated 40 different versions, appearing in the Languedoc-Roussillon, neighbouring Provence, where it is known as rolle and in the far reaches of Australia. Vermentino offers aromas and flavours of citrus zest; lemons, along with some slight nuttiness. To me, the most appealing aspect of this wine is its crisp acidity which leaves the palate refreshed. This characteristic allows vermentino to match with a host of cuisines. Viognier, on the other hand has a more distinctive flavour and aroma profile; anything in the range from stone fruits; apricots, peaches to floral notes of honeysuckle and primroses. I enjoy the medium+ weight of some of these wines as many are likely to have been fermented or matured in oak. Oak adds secondary characteristics of vanilla, which when balanced can be really enjoyable. Viognier is most famous in the Rhone Valley, starring in the fine wines of Condrieu, but also appears as far as California and Australia. The aromatics of viognier makes it a great partner for Thai food as well as seafood. So, take up the challenge and try some variety! The Royal Oak

Cues Lane, Bishopstone, Swindon, SN6 8PP 01793 790481 The Royal Oak is, as you would expect in this part of the countryside, old and lost in time. You enter through the front door into the large dining room, with the bar at the far end. There is ample room for about fifty five diners plus drinkers. Scrubbed tables with an assortment of chairs and benches, a variety of ornaments and knickknacks everywhere with comical, quirky pictures and posters of animals and people decorating the room. We relaxed in the corner by a window, watching the comings and goings of locals and visitors, all greeted with a smile and a word from one of the staff. Starting with a bowl of Devilled veal kidneys and bacon in a brandy cream sauce with a sprinkling of chives, shared as a starter, very tasty and enough to awaken the appetite. Our main courses followed, a large slice of Pork cider and apple pie with new potatoes and freshly cooked vegetables, delicious was the verdict, we sampled each others. Tenderloin of pork, apricots and vegetables with a hint of tarragon was another choice, again compliments to the Chef. The Shin of beef served in a red wine sauce with polenta and vegetables, well… it just fell apart at the touch of the fork, beautifully cooked... There was more to follow, after a short pause, while the bottle of Bousquet red was again passed around. English strawberry salad with iced raspberry mousse, was one choice of dessert. It was lovely and refreshing. Lemon tart with a scoop of buffalo milk ice cream was another choice. The sharp tang of lemon with the smooth ice cream went together like a dream… Whether it be for a three course dinner party or a pint and a sit down, do not hesitate to go into the Royal Oak. Only home grown organic produce is used throughout the year, this includes lambs, pigs and cattle reared at the owners nearby farm. The staff were attentive, friendly and smiling. Thank you very much Tim Finny (manager and landlord) A definite recommendation!…..
