Business Update

Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Faringdon Business Breakfast Club “To mediate or litigate” was the question being considered by the Faringdon Business Breakfast Club at their October meeting – we were treated to a “doubleheader” of speakers as we heard from Jonathan Russell of Rees Russell accountants, himself a qualified arbitrator. Stephen Schneider of Morgan Cole solicitors then gave an insight from the litigator’s point of view, but they managed to agree that the vast majority of business disputes are best disposed of by mediation without involving the courts. There were six new members this month including a biomechanist who could immediately see posture problems with almost half of the audience! Then there were wise words from one of the FBBC’s founder members, Tony Fecher, who summarised everyone’s business as being “customer satisfaction”. Our IT specialists warned us of impending doom as the Windows XP operating system is consigned to history and Gordon Mitchell, our resident will writer, reminded us of life’s three certainties; death, taxes and angry relatives. However many of the group reported that the economic outlook is showing signs of a sustained recovery. FBBC, is an informal networking group which has been running since 2004. It meets on the first working Monday of each month at 7.30am at the Sudbury House Hotel. There is no joining fee and no restriction on who may attend, the only cost is your breakfast – just £10. If you are interested in coming to a future meeting, please visit the club’s website http://www.fbbc-networking.co.uk or reserve your place by calling 0845 003 1340 or e-mailing paul.brame@morgan-cole.com

Carl has worked for Tesco for almost 14 years and after three and half years as a store manager, will be launching his first new store, on Park Road in Faringdon. “I am delighted to be opening a Tesco store for the Faringdon community, says Carl.” As well as creating 161 jobs for the local area, we have been working hard to ensure that we are offering the right products and services for your needs. “Alongside the grocery and kitchen cupboard essentials, you would expect from your local store, we will have a selection of exciting concepts and services. This includes a pizza counter serving a selection of fresh and cooked pizzas, a Food to Go area offering freshly prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner options to take away and Click and Collect services for both Grocery and Tesco direct items. The Click and Collect Groceries service allows you to order your groceries online and collect from your Faringdon store. The collection point is in the store car park where you can load up your car with your shopping. Why not give it a try as collection is free up until 20th December 2013. “The new store team are all training hard and getting the store ready for its opening and we are looking forward to welcoming you all into store. We are really keen to hear your thoughts and feedback and look forward to playing an active role in Faringdon community.” Jane is a former teacher and has been a Faringdon resident for the past 23 years. “It is very important to us, as a store, that we establish and maintain strong Community Champion Jane Smith relationships to help support the town. We are kick-starting our support with a £1,000 donation at our launch and will continue to try and make a difference with a variety of customer events, community funding opportunities and town involvement once our doors are open. “We hope that the town will really get behind our Helping Hand Competition which we are launching on Monday 18th November, this will give you the chance to have a say in how £1,500 will be spent within the local area by nominating worthy causes and groups in need of a little financial help. “We also have some exciting winter and Christmas food sampling events in store on Saturday 9th and 16th November and we are looking forward to working with the Faringdon Christmas Lights team this year. “I am incredibly excited about my new role and I am very much looking forward to working among the community on behalf of our new Tesco store.”

Fruity!.… or just Nuts?… There, definitely appears to be a glut of fruit this autumn. From plump apples to jewelled plums and cascading blackberries, all there for the taking and offering to friends and family so it seems! I have been really lucky in the shop this year as customers have been bringing me walnuts, apples, figs and plums. Really lovely to be bestowed with such riches, thank you all. Such quality in mother nature should not be overlooked, with a little inventiveness not going amiss if you fancy it! Although I truly love the classics, you can't beat them. Autumn fruit crumble, baked apples with lashings of golden syrup, pies and just good old puréed fruit with a touch of yogurt or more indulgently clotted cream. Dreamy! Using these fruits in baking is wonderful, or chopping a Bramley into a stew works well. And what's great also, is that if stored correctly, some of these fruits will store superbly. As well as the range of recipes we can use fruits in, there is a massive abundance of varieties of all the fruits. Take apples for instance. You may be eating a long lost variety. There are, after all, around 7000 of them! Try making a simple tarte tatin with apple, pear or plum. Make a robust winter salad with peppery leaves and beetroot. Or just chop them in to a caramelised upside down cake. Fabulous! So, to make a really indulgent pudding with all the air of traditionalism let's make a good old crumble. To serve 6, take eight pears then peel and chop them. Coat with a little lemon juice to stop them from browning then stir together with 75g soft brown sugar and 150g broken chocolate. Tip the pears into an ovenproof dish. To make the crumble, place 225g plain flour in to a large bowl then add 125 butter cut in to cubes. Rub in, using your fingertips to create a lovely fine grained mixture. Stir through 75g soft brown sugar and 25g oats along with 50g chopped hazelnuts. Spread over the surface of the fruit, press down gently then bake for 30 minutes until golden. Serve with big spoonfuls of something cold and creamy to really compliment that wonderful heat then plump for the chair by the fire whilst savouring the fruits of your labour!

The Beaujolais Nouveau Revival In the 80’s and 90’s Beaujolais Nouveau was a ‘global phenomenon’. A youthful red wine borne of Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc (aka Gamay) grapes, it was originally made to celebrate the end of harvest. Produced in the Beaujolais region (north west of Lyon), France. It is bottled only 6-8 weeks after the grapes have been picked. By law, all grapes in this region require hand harvesting. The wine is made through a process known as carbonic maceration; where whole berries are fermented in a carbon dioxide rich vessel before being crushed. Being in an anaerobic environment, crazy chemical reactions occur, causing the individual intact berries to break down intracellularly and the juice ferments whilst it is still inside the grape berry. Conventional wine making sees the grapes crushed first and placed in contact with the free run juice, skins, yeast and oxygen. The result is a youthful, pale ruby wine with a purple hue. It has minimal tannin, with pronounced aromas and flavours of bananas, pear drops, strawberries and figs. It is meant for early and immediate consumption, very much a quaffing wine, lacking the structure and complexity for lengthy cellaring. Officially, the release of this wine is the 3rd Thursday in

5

November (21st this year) on what is now known as ‘Beaujolais Day’. Strategic marketing from a handful of négociants (wine merchants) saw the opportunity to liquidate excess vin ordinaire for a reasonable mark up and in doing so, create healthy cash flow for their businesses, whilst waiting for the maturation of their premium wines. In the past, Beaujolais Nouveau has suffered abuse from over production and has been viewed as a highly manufactured product. But a new generation of artisan winemakers are intent on restoring Beaujolais’ damaged reputation. Karim Vionnet launched his Villé-Morgon vineyard to ‘make a wine that was simple and natural’. Another producer, Mathieu Lappierre, states that ‘the trend with many of the young winemakers today is to practice vinification and agriculture respectful of the region’s identity.’ Now there’s the reason to join in with the Beaujolais Nouveau Revival! You can celebrate ‘Beaujolais Day’ at The Bobbin Bistro on Thursday, November 21st 8pm. £30 per person to include traditional French food and of course, a glass or two of Beaujolais Nouveau! David P Elliot now based in Faringdon “Steve Finding hadn’t expected to see Mary again. It had been six months since his first and only encounter with her at Jennings Cottage in the village of Grove in Oxfordshire and he had not returned to the place since. Of course, it was possible he might, under normal circumstances, have expected at some time to bump into her. Oxfordshire isn’t that big a place and as a radio presenter, he spent a good chunk of his time visiting local towns and David P Elliot villages for his radio show. But the main reason he did not expect to see her again was because she died in 1871.” So opens ‘Long Alley’, one of six short ‘Tales of the Unexpected’, written by Oxfordshire author David P Elliot and published in his recent anthology ‘Pieces of Fate’. ‘Long Alley’ the story, is named after the beautiful and ancient almshouses hidden behind St Helen’s Church in the riverside town of Abingdon in Oxfordshire and is the second of two stories in the anthology sub-titled ‘Finding Ghosts’ which introduce the reader to Steve Finding, a cynical ex-journalist, now hosting a weekly local radio show investigating alleged incidents of paranormal activity. Elliot had previously used this character in an earlier story, (also in the anthology) called ‘The Cottage’ about a suspected ghost in a cottage in Grove, Oxfordshire. The cottage in the story exists, in fact Elliot used to live there and says that some of the incidents actually happened. The Cottage can be identified from clues in the plot. Whilst visiting the Abingdon Museum, Elliot read a story of a young woman, Mawyan Duhan, who was made the subject of a so-called ‘Bastardry Order’ in 1675 for the ‘crime’ of having an illegitimate child and was put to work in the House of Corrections, an institution that pre-dated the more traditional ‘Workhouse.’ Elliot says, “I was struck by two things, firstly that the child seemed to have no recognition at all, not even warranting a name, being referred to only as ‘The Bastard Child’, and the severity of the sentence for this ‘crime’. I thought it might be nice if someone, even over 300 years later, recognised the cruelty of the times.” So using the same characters from the previous story, ‘Long Alley’ was born. ‘Pieces of Fate’ was Elliot’s second book following upon the International success of ‘Clan’ his first novel, a historical supernatural thriller which sold in 16 countries and was also translated into German. “I had always intended writing a sequel to ‘Clan’ but it was important to take my time so that readers of ‘Clan’ were not disappointed so I took time to make sure the sequel was as good as I could make it – ‘Pieces of Fate’ gave me the opportunity to keep my writing hand in as it were, while I sorted out quite a complex plot for the sequel. I’m personally happy with the result but readers will be the final arbiter as always”. The sequel called ‘The Gathering’ has now also been released and takes the story 28 years into the future.

Is a unique and inviting shop situated at 6 London Street in Faringdon. It is modern, bright and tranquil. As soon as you walk in the door you are greeted by calm relaxing music and a lovely light perfume from the scented candles, diffusers and soaps that are on display. Shop owner Rachel Gibbs, who opened the shop in April, has sourced Rachel a wide range of well designed products such as hand made leather satchels, jewellery, baby clothes, toys, decorative kitchenware and locally made arts and crafts. She likes to provide mainly British or fair trade goods made from natural or recycled materials, taking pride in finding unusual wares, ensuring good quality and avoiding the ordinary or commonplace. She is planning a men's gift section which will include Blend Collective - body care using natural ingredients. When I visited her in the shop I was immediately drawn towards a lovely display of soaps, lantern candles, place mats and coasters, the Belvedere range from Two's Company - beautiful. Then I was surprised to see that scented soap can be made from Goats milk - well it smells lovely and is made in Littleworth by The Little Goat Soap Company. There are some pretty children's clothes and some very unusual modern clocks suitable for a child's room or the kitchen - or any room with a lighthearted feel to it. There are also luxury cards, gift wrap and ribbons. This is the ideal place to find original and different Christmas gifts. Rachel is increasing her stock every week as we approach Christmas, and will include Christmas cards and candles, fairy lights, handbags and jewellery. Also toys from Djeco, a really good French toy manufacturer. Towards Christmas Rachel will be offering a professional gift wrapping service - not only for gifts bought in her shop - but also for those of you have run out of time or are too busy to do your own. Rachel is constantly developing and renewing the collection and is happy to source a particular item to meet your needs. The shop is pushchair and wheelchair friendly and there are gifts to suit all pockets. There will be a late night Christmas shopping event on November 28th, staying open until 9. Rachel will be serving mulled wine and mince pies, and celebrating The Gifted Magpie's first Christmas in Faringdon. Do yourself a favour and pay her a visit – it’s a beautiful place to shop. I started my Christmas shopping there (Scented tea lights from Beefayre) and will definitely be going back for more.

Orafric - A Jewel in the crown of Faringdon | The Advertiser | page 18 |

Orafric Jewellers are situated at 4A Market Street in Faringdon. Shop owner Nizar Peera (Mr P) has been successfully providing original and distinctive jewellery from there for the last ten years. In his own words: "I am a jeweller and proud of it. I started my business in 1971 in the heart of London's Knightsbridge. Over many years, until my retirement, our success was built on uncompromised quality and award winning craftsmanship. Due to the love of my trade I decided to set up shop again, in the heart of Faringdon. " Nizar only uses natural materials and gemstones when creating his jewellery, nothing artificial or imitation. With the workshop on the premises the made-to-measure pieces including engagement and wedding rings are all constructed to the highest level of craftsmanship, any design and budget. There is a lovely display of Amber jewellery as you go into the shop. He also uses Coral, Ruby, Tanzanite and many other gemstones to produce his works of art. I loved the vast selection of fresh water pearls. Anything special for Christmas can be made to order - there is still time. There will be exciting new jewellery available for the festive season including a trendy range of watches. There are items to suit all tastes and all budgets, from the tiniest earrings to the chunkiest necklaces. There is also jewellery for men. Inside the door stand two very large Amethyst Geodes (one is 44 inches high, we measured it !!) and a smaller Citrine one, they are amazing and would make spectacular Christmas presents. If you do not know what they are just go to have a look. Orafric also provide a repair service, watch batteries, valuations, re-stringing, redesigning and will buy your old gold for cash. If you would like to see what Nizar does and what he can offer you he is more than happy to show you around.

| ThePiri Advertiser | page 19 | Roosters Piri Swindon Town

Next time you are in Swindon Town try something new! Roosters Piri Piri What a pleasant surprise! Spotlessly clean with very happy welcoming staff all ready to serve you! Mr Shaheed Peera, son of Nizar Peera (Orafric Jewellers Faringdon) has opened Roosters Piri Piri opposite Wilkinson and Wetherspoons - Sir Daniel Arms, in the middle of Swindon's shopping centre. If you are taking the family for a day out to the shops, this is the place to bring them for a tasty refuel. Fast but healthy - all the food is cooked on the premises and is prepared only when ordered, served neatly on black stone platters, very a la cart but not their prices! The variety of the menu is vast, from chicken wings to whole chickens, wraps, pita's, burgers... One secret I did find out from Manager Aseef Peera is that the chicken is marinated 24 hours before serving, so allowing the flavour to penetrate the whole joint, not just the outer flesh, resulting in the most tasty chicken you've ever had. I had the lemon chicken strips and mild piri piri wings, served with spicy rice, so delicious, full of flavour followed by a freshly squeezed orange juice, lovely! There are no chemical nasties to bother you, added to the food. Roosters stress the lack of MSG, hydrogenated fats and the likes, they are most definitely not used... If you are not in the mood for Chicken then try the lamb burgers, melt in the mouth!.... Not forgetting the vegetarians which are fully catered for with a selection of halloumi Kebab's, Spicy Been wraps or grilled vegetables with all the toppings served in pita or wraps. Definitely makes your shopping experience worth it!

Are thrilled to present Ira Levin's classic thriller DEATHTRAP Where fiction becomes fact! Struggling to write his next play, Sidney Bruhl is shown a sure fire successful play by one of his students, Clifford Anderson. As Sidney describes it "A thriller in two acts. One set, five characters. A juicy murder in Act One, unexpected developments in Act Two. Good dialogue, laughs in the right places. Highly commercial."Maybe Sidney can find a way of making the play his own, even if it is over young Mr. Anderson's dead body. "Deathtrap" is a roller-coaster ride that alternately amuses and terrifies, which is exactly what you want from a thriller. Best of all, you never catch up to the twists and turns. VACCINATIONS – ACROSS THE WORLD.

Talk to the Vet !

Hello, welcome to another column in this magazine. Thank you to Karen, my Assistant, for stepping in so ably with our first column last month, when I was called up to Scotland on urgent family matters. If I may introduce myself, my Practice is based in Stanford, has been trading since 1994, and has always been happy to work with all other local practices in the interests of animal care and welfare. Some of these contacts have their beginnings in the distant days of old Mr Day and Mr Roger. MISSION RABIES, increased incidence in the cases of PARVOVIRUS and BIRD TABLE HYGIENE. The mission statement of Mission Rabies, with its huge, 6-wheeled 6X6 yellow Mercedes lorry, is to vaccinate 50, 000 street and pet dogs in India, for Rabies, in just 30 days. They had already exceeded this total by WORLD RABIES DAY SEPTEMBER

28th 2013 and the current total stands at a staggering 60,304. In India, a child dies of rabies every hour we're going to change that. The man behind the mission is Vet Luke Gamble, and the link to the Team is included in the following list. It’s an inspiring project, hinging on the skill and persistence of the dog catchers. The truck landed in Mumbai, as part of the 3 year project, which also includes neutering when vaccination places are returned to, and as I write, it’s currently in Assam, Bangladesh, in some of the most economically-struggling parts of the Continent. http://www.missionrabies.com The take-home message is that Rabies is TOTALLY preventable. Other than 20 or more children needlessly dying a mostinhumane death every day - across the World, it is estimated that 60,000 men, women and children die an agonising death every year. If you have cared to look at cases of rabies in dog, the “furious” type very often, you would see just how they, too, suffer. Other mammals may have a passive, almost over-friendly form, but with the same end-result to themselves and those they lick, drool on, scratch or bite. PARVOVIRUS in the UK is also completely preventable by standard vaccinations and regular boosters. We send off certain faecal samples to our external laboratory for DNA tests when warranted and “wild” parvovirus is nearly always on the positive list. So it’s always around. PDSA vets in 4 centres have collated their case load results and have concluded that there is a genuine increase in the incidence of confirmed cases of diarrhoea and vomiting caused by parvovirus infection. There is also a downturn in the uptake of vaccinations. Coincidence or not?

BIRD TABLE HYGIENE. A problem closer to home, that I’ve added as it’s very important with more tables being stocked up for colder weather to come, is about a different disease, Trichomoniasis, which has become clinically apparent locally in wild birds feeding at the bird table in a local Village garden. This was kindly brought to my attention by the Owner and he described the 17 green finches dead in his garden as a result of a surge of Trichomoniasis infection in local finches. Affected birds are lethargic and fluffed up, can drool saliva as well as regurgitate food just eaten from the table, spreading the parasite to other birds. Birds breathe with difficulty, have matted head feathers, and may have a neck swelling. Over days or weeks, emaciation and death. There is NO risk to cats, dogs or humans but other diseases like Campylobacter, pathogenic strains of E.coli and Salmonella may be present. The current advice as best practice for all bird table feeders and their tables, all year round is this: Routine good table hygiene, provision of clean and fresh drinking water on a daily basis, provision of fresh food from accredited sources, rotate the positions of feeders in the garden to reduce build-up of contamination in any one area, paying particular attention to clearing food remains that have fallen down on to the ground At veterinary surgeries and in good pet shops, or the RSPB online shop, excellent disinfectant sprays and table scrapers, accredited food with low waste are all available. More information on the Garden Bird Health initiative (GBHi) page of the UFAW website, www.ufaw.org.uk or ring them on 020 7449 6685 to report diseased or dying birds. Thank you for your company & see you next month. Robert Elliott Hopefully a healthier month!! 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH

Winter in Waiting!.. "Why do all our insects go away in the winter?" is a question people often ask me. The answer is that some hibernate both in adult forms, pupae and larval. Harlequin Ladybirds make their way into our homes and snuggle down for the winter, often hibernating in the corners of windows. Others migrate to warmer climates. Some moth and butterfly species leave the UK towards the end of the summer and head down to the Mediterranean - who can blame them! Some gather in communal clusters for warmth, such as bees, who stay in their hives feeding off their honey store until they can venture out and new sources of nectar are available. Some, like ants, retreat below the frost line in the ground and live off their winter stores. All have survival strategies in place to enable them to cope and be ready to breed as soon as the temperatures of Spring start to rise. Insects are cold blooded and do not have great layers of body fat so they are easily affected by fluctuating temperatures. They use energy quickly with activities such as flying and need warmth as well as food to maintain their bodies. To put it extremely simply, they have not all gone away, they are just quietly waiting. Sally-Ann Spence Email:minibeastmayhem@gmail.com Web: www.minibeastmayhem.com Twitter:@minibeastmayhem

Hi I’m Richard I’ve been running the Gym at Carswell for 8 years, where I’m proud to have created an environment that lets people feel comfortable about exercise whilst still achieving results. I qualified as a personal trainer 9 years ago in that time I’ve worked with thousands of customers who have been looking to change their lives either through weight loss, improved health and fitness or recovery from sports injury. I like to support people by nurturing their progress rather than by bullying, and my customers know that they can turn to me whenever they need to for help and advice, or a gentle nudge every now and again to keep them motivated. If this type of training interests you please call me on 07800636004

Hi I’m Alex I've been working as a qualified personal trainer with 8 years experience in gyms where I accumulated a wide range of knowledge about the best way to train for specific goals, activities or sports. My training style prioritises strength as working to become stronger will not only allow for my clients continual progress, no matter what their goal, but it will make everyday activities and sporting endeavours much easier. With this in mind I keep things varied and enjoyable for my clients while keeping them progressing in a variety of other aspects including; health, flexibility/mobility and general fitness. Whatever your goal I can help. If this type of training interests you please call me on 07771911795

Hi I’m Emily I specialise in toning, core conditioning and general health and fitness. Having completed a degree in Biology and a post-grad in education, I went on to teach science at secondary school for 11 years, before deciding to follow my love of exercise training as a new career. I am qualified in teaching Les Mills group exercise programs to music, including BODYCOMBAT™, BODYATTACK™, BODYPUMP™ and CXWORX™. My personal training sessions are tailored to each individual’s personal goals, and can incorporate elements from these exercise programs, as well as the use of kettlebells, Vibrogym, GTS (Gravity Training System) and TRX (suspension training). In short, there’s something for ‘EveryBody’!

The Benefits of Interval Training

In a previous article I explained the benefits of strength training and encouraged you to add resistance work to your fitness programme so you could reach your goals faster. Following on from this today I’m going to talk about the type of cardiovascular training (cardio) you should be doing in conjunction with your resistance training. Some people love doing long distance cardio and if you’re one of them by all means keep doing what you love and just add in some intervals to mix things up. However there are many people who dislike cardio but see it as necessary. If this is you, take heart, as you can still achieve your fitness goals but with less cardio. Now, when I say cardio I'm referring to running, cycling or swimming for a long time at a slow steady pace. As I’ve already said if you love doing this then by all means keep doing it, otherwise it should really be reserved for someone training to compete in a long duration event. If your goals include increasing health and general fitness, improving body composition or sporting performance then the majority of your cardio training should be done as intervals, and here's the good part. It takes up much less time, in some cases as little as 4 minutes!

What is interval training? Interval training is when you exercise at different intensities, with short fast bursts as your main work and a slow and steady pace as your recovery period. This enables you to benefit from both aerobic and anaerobic fitness in the same workout.

How to do interval training? To get started with interval training you should warm up thoroughly spending at least 5 minutes steadily increasing your pace, as this will both reduce the risk of injury and increase your performance. After warming up proceed to a period of high intensity sprinting followed by a set time of slower-paced recovery. There are many different protocols to achieve this ranging from 20 seconds work and 10 seconds rest (known as Tabata) up to as much as 1 minute fast 1-2 minutes slow. For beginners I would normally recommend 0-15 seconds fast followed by 45-50 seconds slow to ease them in. You will find you will only need 5-15 minutes of this to get a good work out. It should be performed just 1-3 times a week to start with because of the high intensity element.

What are the benefits? The benefits of intervals include, but are not limited to; increased aerobic and anaerobic fitness, faster fat loss due to an increase in metabolism alongside the calories burned, an increase in growth hormone which further helps fat loss as well as warding off aging, an increase in insulin sensitivity and thus in your body's ability to regulate sugar, and an increase in your body's efficiency at switching between energy systems which makes it vital for people playing sports that involve changes in pace and quick recovery. So whether you're out on a run, a ride or in the pool you can add in some intervals and if you come to the gym the possibilities are greater still with all the cardio machines at your disposal as well as a vast array of dynamic exercises that we can show you.

Last month we started our exploration of the ‘whisky island’ of Islay at Laphroaig, and now we move on just a short distance up the road to arrive at Lagavulin. Like Laphroaig, Lagavulin has an extremely picturesque setting – particularly when the sun shines from a clear blue sky on the silhouetted ruins of Dunyvaig Castle, which sits on a small island just out in the bay next to the distillery. Established in 1816 (and at the heart of the White Horse blend since 1890), the distillery is very traditional in appearance. Despite sharing a similar environment and peating level to Laphroaig, the style of whisky at Lagavulin is noticeably different. The big, bulbous copper stills account for part of this individuality, particularly as the spirit stills are filled to a greater capacity than is the norm – which reduces the amount of copper contact the spirit has and leads to it being heavier and more robust. Combined with this is a very slow distillation time which provides richness and smoothness to the spirit. Around 90% of Lagavulin’s production is bottled as single malt and yet it only has a very limited range of core bottlings, the youngest being a 12 year old Cask Strength, which is released annually – each time with a different year of distillation and therefore the flavour profile differs slightly. It’s a very powerful dram, and the predominant character is heavily smoky, sooty-sweet and marine but also with notes of chocolate, cereal, nuts, liquorice and citrus. The 16 year old is dark, rich, smooth, smoky, and sophisticated, with a depth of flavour and character described as ‘rich, dried fruit sweetness with clouds of smoke and strong, barley-malt flavours, warming with an intense flavour.’ It’s everything a peated whisky should be in my book. Finally, in the core range is the Distiller’s Edition. Most Lagavulin is matured in bourbon casks but this expression has gone on for further maturation in a PX cask. This is a stunning whisky for any peat lover, and if Ken and I had a top ten of whiskies this would definitely feature in it. It’s a decadent whisky where the well balanced sweetness, fruit, smoke, coffee, and vanilla blend beautifully with a salty tang. Alongside this year’s version of the 12 year old, the Diageo Special Releases for 2013 will include the oldest Lagavulin released to date, a 37 year old that has been matured in both European and American oak. Can’t wait to try that one…

A Half Forgotten Song Katherine Webb 2012

Fourteen year old Mitzy Hatcher lives in a Dorset village with her prostitute mother Valentina. Her life changes spectacularly when renowned artist Charles Aubrey, his Moroccan mistress Celeste and their children Delphine and Elodie start spending their summers at a large house in the same village. Mitzy almost becomes part of their family over the three summers and gradually becomes Charles's favourite subject for his art. She becomes infatuated with Charles and a powerful and dangerous love develops. Years later Zach Gilchrist, himself an artist and the owner of an art studio, is recently divorced. His ex-wife decides to move herself and his 6 year old daughter to America. Zach is distraught. He decides to have a complete life style change and write a book that he had been planning to write for some time - a book about the life of one of his favourite artists, Charles Aubrey. Katherine Webb is a superb story teller and this is a very readable book. I enjoy her writing style. She seamlessly interweaves Zach's modern day story with the 1930's saga of the Aubrey family and Mitzi's romantic obsession with Charles - some of the threads of the storyline are dark, bordering on horrific but also they are engrossing. At the start of the book I kept having the feeling that I had read it already. After searching my bookshelves and checking the publication date I found that not to be the case, so I think perhaps the theme is a well used one !! That did not spoil my enjoyment however, and further into the plot there were plenty of surprises. This book was recommended to me by a friend who thought I might like to read and review it, thank you Julie, I thoroughly enjoyed it. To quote Katherine Webb “I was born in Kent in 1977 and grew up in Hampshire before reading History at Durham University. History remains my passion, and I write character-led mystery dramas, often with historical settings. I love to explore the way past events can reverberate in the present, and I am fascinated by the vast grey areas in human morality and behaviour." Katherine's debut novel "The Legacy" was voted viewer’s choice on Channel 4's book club in 2010. Subsequently "The Unseen" and "A Half Forgotten Song" were both Sunday Times Top Ten Bestsellers. Her Latest book - "The Misbegotten" is now available. Happy Reading.....
