Business Update The 7th annual Faringdon Chamber of Commerce Charity Ball The Faringdon Chamber of Commerce is delighted to release advanced details of its annual charity ball, now into its seventh year.

The event will be held on Saturday 23rd November 2013 at the Sudbury House Hotel, (now under new ownership).

The entertainment for the ball will be provided by “The CNS Allstars” from Chipping Norton. They play a “unique blend of swing, jazz and rock 'n' roll” ranging from Nat King Cole and Dean Martin to more contemporary material and have played at Cornbury, Alex James’ “Harvest” as well as many other international festivals.

(For more information please take a look at their website http://www.cnsallstars.com/ ). Of course, as is customary at this event there are bound to be other musical interludes and maybe the odd impromptu surprise during the evening!

The event is black tie and there will be drinks on arrival and an opportunity to mix with other guests. Then there will be a three course meal with wine supplied by local importer Den Boer Wines. There will also be several opportunities to win prizes during the night and there will also be a raffle.

This year the ball will be supporting Churches Together in Faringdon as the main charity (and they will receive half of the profits raised on the night). (For details of their work please see http://www.ctfaringdon.org.uk/ ) There will also be an opportunity for individual tables to nominate their own charity and each of these charities will receive a share of the other half of the profits raised by the event. Last year the event raised nearly £2,000 for Help For Heroes, and we are hoping to top that figure this year.

The headline price of the tickets has yet to be fixed, but will be less than last year’s headline price of £45 and once again, membership of the Faringdon Loyalty Scheme will entitle cardholders to £5 off the price of each ticket (one loyalty card is needed for each person) (Faringdon Loyalty Card helps local businesses promote their goods and services to over 600 cardholders with monthly offers and promotions.)

Tel: 01367 240112 www.rogersgardenstone.co.uk Our tour of the Scottish islands moves now to the ‘Queen of the Hebrides’, Islay. This most southerly of the Inner Hebrides has beautiful beaches, an abundance of wildlife and a laid back approach to life that is infectious. One of its main claims to fame is its eight whisky distilleries and if you arrive into Port Ellen by boat then even before the CalMac ferry docks you will have passed Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig along the coastline – the triumvirate that produce some of the most heavily peated whiskies on the island.

We start our exploration of Islay at Laphroaig - the first distillery on the road eastwards from Port Ellen and currently the best selling Islay malt worldwide plus the only distillery to hold a Royal Warrant. As you arrive an archetypal vision of an island distillery appears. Smoke gently drifts pasts a pagoda roof and in the background is a small bay where, if you’re lucky, otters can be seen.

Characteristics of this Islay heavyweight include peat smoke, seaweed, tar, a sweet nuttiness and some brine. Laphroaig still has its own maltings where it produces a proportion of the malt used in its whiskies and the brininess is said to come partly from the peat that fires the kiln to dry the barley, as it is extracted from peatbeds that are right by the coast.

A gentle introduction to Laphroaig is the Quarter Cask.

Matured first in a normal size barrel the whisky is then transferred to a small quarter cask which gives it increased contact with wood and adds smoothness and sweetness to the peatiness. Further variations on this are 1) the Triple Wood - where the whisky has a third maturation in Oloroso sherry casks that give citrus fruits, spices and a distinct creaminess; and 2) the PX cask – where the third stage of maturation is in ex-Pedro Ximenez casks that produce a richness that integrates beautifully with the peat smoke.

The age statement Laphroaigs include the trademark big and bold 10 year old that all the other expressions emanate from, plus an 18 and 25 year old - whose longer contact with wood adds in vanilla, toffee, fruit, spice and a velvety smoothness whilst still retaining the essential peatiness of the whisky.

Laphroaig is a whisky with depth and character that can be difficult on first acquaintance but is well worth getting to know and makes an ideal companion on a cold winter’s night.

Is your pet afraid of fireworks?

Most of us enjoy a good fireworks display with all its whooshing, banging and fizzing but for many of our pets it can be a terrifying experience. A survey carried out by the PDSA found that 73% of the owners questioned, thought that their cat or dog was afraid of fireworks. But don’t worry, there is a lot that you can do to help your pet and it is best to start right now.

Build your cat or dog a quiet place and get them used to it well before fireworks night. Create a safe haven away from doors and windows and line it with blankets or an old duvet to help insulate it from noise. Start giving your pet their treats, food or a toy in there so that they associate it with happy safe feelings so that when the noises and flashes start, they know there is somewhere safe to retreat to.

Your vet can supply you with many things to help; there are many products that will make your pet less anxious. Most plug-in diffusers and tablets are readily available, you don’t need to see the vet and your friendly nurses and receptionists can help you make the best choice for your pet. If you can, start these treatments at least 10 days before fireworks week starts.

When you expect fireworks it is best to shut your cat in at night until the display is over and remember to walk your dog earlier if necessary so that you don’t have to take him out later.

When fireworks start to explode the most important thing is to be brave yourself. Your pet will take their cue from you and if you show fear or become anxious then they will become increasingly worried. Try to stay calm and carry on as though nothing unusual is happening. Possibly turn your television or music up a little louder, to help drown out the noise, and stay calm when loud noises begin. If your pet comes to seek reassurance do give them a friendly cuddle but try to stay happy and reassuring so that you don’t reinforce their fear.

On a final note, don’t forget your smaller furry friends, cover hutches with blankets to help reduce the noise and flashing lights or, if possible, build a safe haven indoors

Chickens are coming to Shellingford The children and staff at Positive Steps Day Nursery in Shellingford are very excited this month as their new chickens are due to arrive very soon. The chicken coop and run are being installed and then 4 bantam chickens will take up residence. The chickens will be about 12 weeks old when they arrive. The children are really looking forward to naming them and are already coming up with some great ideas for names. It’s a great opportunity for the children to learn how to take care of animals as they will be cleaning them out and feeding them as part of the daily routine at the nursery. Next year when they are fully grown the chickens should lay eggs for the children to cook with. The chickens will compliment the ethos of the nursery with regards to learning and development for the children with their programme for growing fruit and vegetables and teaching the children how to cook healthy food.

The screaming has started and it is not even Halloween! The cause of many peoples fears seems to be the incredible Crane Fly Tipulidae paludosa often referred to as Daddy Longlegs. They are what we call true flies, really big ones at that, and now it is the peak time to see them. They do not sting, bite or have any venom. In fact they are totally harmless. I always feel sorry for them as they are weak fliers with great long, gangly legs and are soon all to die anyway. Their larvae do not fare any better as they are known as leatherjackets and have a taste for lawns, feeding on the grass roots. Golf courses are a particular favourite making them most unpopular with grounds men. The adults, both male and female, have amazing balancing aids called halteres which are just behind their wings.

The females also have a really cleverly pointed abdomen which is called an ovipositor. She will use this to push into the ground and lay her precious eggs into the soil. The egg hatches into the larva and this grows until it pupates, (it has to go through metamorphosis just like a butterfly). The adults then emerge from August to October, but mostly in September, and are mainly nocturnal. They hardly feed at all and if they do it will only be a quick sip of nectar. Searching out mates they then lay their eggs into grassland, preferring it damp and short.

Then as their eggs begin their life, their parents ends. (Hope you are not so scared now but almost feeling a twinge of sadness?). Easy to catch, but handle with care as their legs can break off. Great seasonal indicators, right up there with blackberrying, ploughed fields and pumpkins.

Food and Wine Matching Food & wine in itself is an interesting subject. Get it right and you create a harmonious sensory experience, enhancing the flavours of both food and wine. Get it wrong and the result can lead to flavours that can grate against each other. Given the expanse of the various cuisines in our midst, the task can be somewhat daunting.

From my non-scientific background, (I have neither the time nor inclination to learn theories of taste compounds etc, but for those of you out there who do, I appreciate your ability!), try adopting a weight and flavour approach. Put simply, light wines match with light foods and heavier wines marry with heavier foods. (And you thought I was going to let you in on an amazing secret – didn’t you??).

Take, for example, a subtle and delicate fish such as sole and partner it with a refreshing, light, crisp white wine such as sauvignon blanc. A meatier fish like monkfish would pair very well with a white wine of fuller body, such as a buttery Chardonnay. Moving forward on the weight scale, a barbecued rib eye steak would dominate a light red such as gamay or pinot noir, but would stand up to the primary fruit and cracked pepper flavour profile of an Australian shiraz.

The flavour aspect of this theory simply pinpoints the wine according to the main flavour profile of the dish with which it is to be served, highlighted in the last example. Pork fillet in a creamy mushroom sauce would pair well with a lightly oaked chardonnay, where as a pork based casserole with tomato sauce would taste amazing with a southern French wine with herbaceous aromas and flavours such as Fitou or I have also paired it with Chianti and it worked a treat.

All in all, the best way to approach food and wine matching is to note the distinctive aroma, flavour and weight profile when tasting a wine and start imagining what the wine could accompany in the food world. Practice makes perfect and before long, you’ll be making fabulous matches of your own!

People are being sought to be part of a friends group that will help shape the future of how Faringdon Library will be run.

The library is one of 21 in the county which will deliver services differently from April 2015, with volunteers supporting staff in the running of the library.

The county council is working closely with communities across Oxfordshire to put the new operating model in place, and to maintain current opening hours. It is now seeking members of the public to form a friends group for Faringdon Library.

This group will speak for the local area on matters related to the library, and will help with delivering the volunteering model there, which will see around 20 hours per week of volunteer time.

An Open Evening will be held at the library between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesday 23 October for anyone interested in finding out more about. Alternatively, please contact James Hazlewood, the county council’s Community Libraries Coordinator, on james.hazlewood@oxf ordshire.gov.uk for more information.

Penny Hancock - published 2012 The cover of the book tell us: " He chose to come to the River House, she chose to keep him there forever " and that is pretty much how the story goes. It is described as a psychological thriller.

Sonia is a forty-something married woman living in a large London house on the banks of the river Thames. She abducts a teenage boy because he reminds her of someone in her past. The story takes us through the turmoil of the abduction and the complications of keeping him concealed and alive, as well as her sexual fantasies about him. At the same time we are taken back through her childhood within a dysfunctional family, we eventually learn how she became so psychologically damaged. Her secrets are revealed as her breakdown progresses. The story is told in part by Sonia and also by her friend Helen.

I have read a lot of reviews about Tideline and many of the readers thoroughly enjoyed it and found it to be a fascinating, intriguing, and exciting book. Some however did not really enjoy it and unfortunately I am one of those. I found the subject matter rather distasteful and disturbing. However I must admit that I actually did finish Tideline and have since found myself thinking about it a lot. So it has definitely left some sort of impression on me. I am also still wondering exactly what did happen in the end. The descriptive writing, especially about the river, is excellent and atmospheric makes you shiver at times. If you do decide to read this book I would be most interested to know what you think about it - and whether you agree with my assessment or if you are one of those who thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

This is Penny Hancock's debut novel. She grew up in South East London and then studied for an English degree in Newcastle Upon Tyne. For several years she taught English as a foreign language. It was an Arvon writing course and an MA in creative writing at Anglia Ruskin University that encouraged her to write her first novel.

Tideline is one of Richard & Judy's recommended reads. Penny's second novel "The Darkening Hour" is now available.

Fancy a Game?‌ The sights and sounds of autumn really give way to comfort food. I often think about food that you can eat in front of the fire just with a spoon or a fork. Please forgive me for this, I was brought up to always eat at the table, so don't mention this to passing family! The weather also spells for more robust flavours, warming and nourishing us to help pass through these cold months with ease.

And I am sure I have mentioned before, the autumn provides us with a true bounty of produce. Fruits, vegetables and of course game. Take the chance to make the most of game season. And with such a choice we are really spoilt. So pop round to see the boys at Pat Thomas and they will sort you out with what ever it is you fancy. And no plucking involved!

It's really not at all complicated to cook game. Oh!.. and also, it is not hung for quite so long any more. I was always put off game as the flavour was really quite high, the meat being hung for rather too long in my opinion. But I would hope to convince you that most game does not taste 'gamey' any more! It should be succulent, tender and just plain gorgeous!

One thing to remember though, is that game is very lean, so careful cooking is important, cooking it either pretty quickly or very slowly will give the best results.

For a seasonal dish with a local twist, try this.

Peel and chop a small onion. Soften in a generous knob of butter in a large oven proof pan until tender. Add a peeled and chopped clove of garlic and cook for a moment more.

Next add about 750g diced game mix - or even just perhaps pheasant or even guinea fowl - and cook until opaque. Pour in a bottle of local Sideburn cider adding a good few sprigs of thyme and 3-4 bay leaves. Season well then bring up to the boil. Add a lid then place the whole thing in the oven at about 180°C/gas mark 4 for an hour or until tender. Take from the oven and remove the lid. Place on the hob then add a good 100ml double cream. Let the stew bubble until it reduces and thickens. This will likely take about 10 minutes depending on the size of your pan. Whilst this bubbling is going on, core and wedge 3 apples then gently fry them in a little butter until golden and softened.

Serve the game casserole with lashings of mustardy mashed potatoes topped with the golden apples. And in front of the fire with just a fork, if you feel rather daring!

Should we be calorie counting?

If you’ve read my recent articles you’ll know that the best way to lose weight and keep if off is by making a lifestyle change.

When people count calories to manage their weight they are usually following a diet rather than making a lifestyle change.

The basis of a calorie controlled diet is that if you burn more calories than you consume you will lose weight. While that’s true in principle, the reverse is perhaps more likely - if you eat more calories than you burn you will gain weight. Calories are measures of energy but when it comes to weight management they can be meaningless if taken in isolation. Instead, we need to look at where the calories come from.

Our calories come from three macro nutrients in the diet – fat, protein and carbohydrate. These foods are digested, transported, and metabolised differently and affect the body functions in different ways.

This article is going to discuss the effects of sugar and insulin on the body’s fat stores.

Some of the foods we eat stimulate the release of insulin more than others. Insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas telling your cells to absorb sugar from the bloodstream.

Carbohydrates like sugar, bread, pasta and potatoes can cause massive blood sugar spikes which trigger the release of insulin.

Our body turns the excess sugar absorbed into the cells into fat and stores it away, increasing our stores of active fat tissue.

If you avoid stimulating your body’s production of insulin the locking in of fat can be prevented and the body will even start to release fat from the cells to be burned as energy. In a nutshell, reducing your insulin levels will help you to lose weight.

How do you reduce the amount of insulin your body produces?

A diet of low GI (Glycemic Index - The speed at which the sugars are absorbed) and low GL (Glycemic Load - The amount of sugars in the food ) foods will have a low impact on the blood’s sugar level, eliminating those blood sugar spikes and the resulting increase in your body’s active fat stores. Examples of low GI and low GL foods are: Low GI - Cherries, grapefruit, prunes, broccoli, cabbage, mushrooms, yams and sweet potatoes.

Low GL - Strawberries, blueberries, plain unsweetened yogurt, meat and fish, spinach and asparagus.

Combining foods such as fats and protein with your carbohydrates slows down the speed at which the sugars are released into the bloodstream, also preventing sugar spikes and fat storage.

Breakfast idea: Scrambled egg on wholemeal seeded toast with organic butter Lunch idea: Chicken salad Evening Meal: Prawns and stir fried vegetables Snacks: Hummus and oatcakes / Meat and nuts.

Why not look up the GI and GL foods online? You might be surprised at what you find!
