Ben F Jeffery Born in 1986 grew up in Barnet north London. Always having a keen interest in art ever since his Grandad introduced him to the work of John Varley, the renowned 18th Century watercolour artist. The Varley’s are related to the Jeffery family. First realising he wanted to be an artist in secondary school Ben and a few classmates used to have bets to see who could draw the best portrait of someone. He really enjoyed going to school and showing them his, to see their reaction. He painted a portrait of his dad for a mock GCSE which got admired by the entire art class. His work is fairly diverse ranging from portraits to landscapes in both pencil and oils. Ben loves working with vivid, bright colours to create a unique and modern style. Business Update Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Despite some absences due to the holiday season, the monthly meeting of FBBC - Faringdon Business Breakfast Club - attracted almost 20 local business people, several for the first time, to the Sudbury House Hotel, Faringdon on Monday 5th August. After coffee and the opportunity to share contacts, the attendees tucked into their usual hearty breakfast before Club Chairman, Paul Brame, kicked off proceedings. Each delegate took the opportunity to stand in turn to introduce their business and the kind of opportunities they're looking for and notable contributions were provided by: Will writer Gordon Mitchell who alerted to the need to redraft wills following divorce and to the perils of Intestacy. Many used this opportunity to share business opportunities and a number of individual meetings to develop these opportunities were booked as a result. FBBC is an informal Business Networking Club which has been attended by in excess of 300 members during its 10 year existence. Often called ‘Scotland in miniature’ because of it’s varied landscape, Arran is an island that historically had 50 or so distilleries operating at one time. The whisky was very well thought of but, due to the high taxes imposed, the majority of the distillers operated illegally. One of these was the ancestor of a gentleman who lives locally (as some of you may have seen in the recent story on our Facebook page) but unfortunately, despite the legendary ability of island distillers to evade detection, this particular miscreant was caught and hung! Times have changed and in 1994 work began at Lochranza on the first legal distillery on Arran since the late 1800s. It is a compact and extremely attractive distillery, and an ideal place to gain an overview all the distillery processes. Located in a very scenic setting there are even some resident eagles on the adjacent mountain and these iconic symbols of the distillery obliged with a fly past along with one of their offspring when I was there! Now in it’s eighteenth year of production the distillery has an expanding range of whiskies that, to our minds, are just getting better and better. Characteristically fruity, floral and spicy with a well balanced creamy sweetness and a hint of green apple, the differing influence of maturation cask type and age shows in the various expressions that currently go from a 10 year old to a 16 year old, with an 18 year old due out next year. One of our best sellers has to be the Arran 14 year old. Matured in both sherry and bourbon casks, this is a beautiful, rich mouth filling dram. Vanilla, spice, caramelised stewed fruit and custard are all present and quite irresistible. It’s older sibling, the limited release 16 year old, carries on the dessert theme but this time with crème brulee, chocolate and orange. Other whiskies of note are the excellent single cask bourbon or sherry cask releases that are specially chosen for being prime examples of what the distillery produces, the second release of the Devil’s Punchbowl series (that has been created by blending whisky from ex-Oloroso sherry casks, bourbon cask and some peated whisky) and the lightly peated Machrie Moor – named after a legend strewn peat bog, and bringing to the range a whisky that adds in a delightful hint of smoke to citrus, vanilla and spice.

Hollywood Smile or Nasty?.‌‌ Most people do not realise the importance of treating your pets teeth in the same way as you would your own. Dental disease is the most common disease in adult dogs it effects over 87% of dogs and 70% of cats over the age of three years, which can lead to: gingivitis which is inflammation of the gum, pain, bad breath, tooth root abscess, sepsis, bleeding from the gums and anorexia, the bacteria from the mouth can even lead to heart and kidney disease. Symptoms can range from pawing at the mouth, loss of appetite, dropping food, bad breath, visible tartar, dribbling, head shaking, spotting of blood in saliva and wanting to eat from the bowl but just cant. To help prevent dental disease best practice is to brush your pets teeth daily similar to how we brush our own. But you must use special pet tooth paste as the fluoride in human tooth paste can harm our pets. There are lots of products that can help as well if your pet does not let you brush their snappy nashers, there are supplements that you can put on the food or in the water. Outlander – The Series Diana Gabaldon
Lets talk about books !
This month I am going to review a series of books that I have been reading since a friend recommended them to me last year. I haven’t finished the series yet though, I am on book 5 at the moment. Yes it is taking me quite a while but they are long books and I read them in between the other books I review. The first in the series, “Outlander “ (originally published in UK as “Cross Stitch” ) starts us off in Scotland in the 1940’s. We are introduced to Claire Randall, a former English combat nurse who is back from the Second World War, reunited with her husband Frank and on a second honeymoon in Scotland. She accidentally walks through a standing stone in an ancient stone circle and is suddenly taken back in time to Jacobite Scotland, leaving Frank behind. She is now in the year 1743, an “Outlander” in a Scotland torn by war and raiding highland clans. She then meets and falls in love with Jamie Fraser, a brave red headed Scots warrior. The series centres on the romance and adventures of Claire and Jamie in eighteenth and twentieth century Scotland, France, The West Indies, America and England. These are long books and at times perhaps a little too long. They are, in my opinion, written in such an interesting way that you just keep going. As the story involves time travel there has to be an element of scepticism while reading it. However the author has immense knowledge about the subject matters she introduces us to, for example the use of herbs in medicine and the superstitions folk had in those times, and although there are some minor tweaks to some of the historical facts it all becomes very believable and enjoyable. The reader meets many famous and infamous historical characters and follows Claire and Jamie through many adventures – nice and nasty. I would recommend reading the series in the intended order as the stories do interweave with each other. There are seven books in the series – the eighth one will be available from Amazon in March 2014 – I wonder if it will be the last! This series of books is engrossing, exciting and long. I love them, and am beginning to feel that the characters portrayed are all part of some extended family of mine – well I have known them all for nearly a year!! If you like historical fiction, lots of adventure and a good romance you will like them too. Be warned though that there is some adult content and harrowing violence, albeit relevant to the plot. One of the reasons I wanted to review this series is because I saw on the Internet recently that Ronald D Moore (Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica) is producing a TV adaptation of the story and the production location will be Cumbernauld in Scotland. Sam Heughan, a Scottish actor, will reportedly play Jamie, and Tobias Menzies, an English actor, will be Frank/Jack Randall – still no news about who will portray Claire. It is being produced by an American Cable TV channel called Starz and will employ a local crew of about 200 as well as an estimated 2400 supporting roles cast locally. Well I really hope that it is going to be shown to us in the UK too. Diana Jean Gabaldon Watkins grew up in Flagstaff Arizona and is of Mexican-American and English descent. She has earned three degrees, a B.S in Zoology, an M.S. in Marine Biology, and a PhD in ecology. The Outlander series started by accident, when Diana decided to write a novel for practice, in order to decide whether she wanted to do that for real – and she did, and I am glad about that. Spice up your diet when eating for fat loss Lots of people assume that when switching to a healthy diet to lose body fat they have to eat boring and bland meals. This is why a lot of people ultimately fall off the wagon and return to unhealthy foods high in artificial flavourings and sugar. So why don’t we focus on how you can flavour your foods so that they are not just more enjoyable but will enhance your health and help you accomplish your weight loss goals along the way.
Cinnamon Cinnamon is an amazing addition to sweet and savoury dishes alike and can be easily sprinkled on anything from chili dishes to yogurt and oats and even added to a coffee for a flavour kick. The health benefits of cinnamon even out do the flavour - it can help control blood sugar and insulin levels helping with insulin sensitivity, warding off diabetes and reducing blood sugar crashes therefore reducing cravings.
Cayenne Pepper Cayenne peppers contain a compound called capsaicin, this is the compound that gives the chilli peppers their heat and has been shown to increase thermogenesis which can have beneficial impacts on metabolism and fat storage. Research suggests that thermogenic ingredients can boost metabolism by up to 5%. So adding extra chili to your meals is a definite yes and will give those bland dishes a much needed kick.
Black Pepper The substance in black pepper that gives it that peppery flavour, called piperine, has been shown to help the body burn more calories through the process of thermogenesis. Piperine can also help your body use nutrients more efficiently by increasing the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach so is a useful, as well as tasty addition to any meal.
Turmeric This spice is normally associated with Indian cooking. It contains a compound called curcumin which has great anti inflammatory properties - it can also reduce the formation of fat tissue by suppressing the blood vessels needed to form it therefore potentially aiding weight loss. Great to spice up any homemade curry!
Ginger Ginger is a great addition to stir fries. As a warming spice it may have thermogenic properties that help increase metabolism, but its greatest benefit comes from its antiinflammatory properties which can help with digestion and soothing the gastrointestinal tract. Mustard Mustard is another ingredient that has thermogenic properties helping you burn more calories. Mustard seeds are also highly nutrient-dense being a member of the cruciferous family (the same as broccoli). Although these are the main spices you might want to add to your diet, they are just the tip of the iceberg and you should try and get as many different varieties of both spices and herbs to get the full array of potential health benefits available.

Conserving the small things..
Things do have a habit of becoming extinct, just think about the Dinosaurs and all the prehistoric life that went with them including many plants. Extinction is caused by one or many factors such as climate, disease, changes in sea level and of course asteroids. The sad fact is though, that now we humans are fast tracking species extinction on a massive scale. We are doing so by destroying habitats, pollution, over harvesting, water extraction, global warming and illegal trafficking of species (or parts of) for profit to name but a few. You can not just recreate an extinct species from DNA and reintroduce it. Science is not able to do that yet and by the time it does, chances are that it will not have enough suitable habitat left to live in. Wildlife parks are brilliant but animals very often need to travel vast distances to migrate or to simply keep their gene pool diverse. These parks are always running a war against poachers and the rarer the creature the higher the price on its head. A high price means people are willing to take bigger risks. I was working in a museum recently that had had its Rhino head taxidermy (gifted in 1920's) stolen in an elaborate robbery. This is not an isolated case but sadly now a world wide trend. Schools do cover rare species in their classrooms and my own son has been telling me all about the White Rhino he is studying in primary school. But let's go smaller and look past the large mammals, endearing Pandas and fantastic Mountain Gorillas, lets look at the tiny invertebrates. At present one fifth of the world's invertebrates are at risk. That might not sound much until you realize that invertebrates make up around 80% of all animal life. They dominate ecosystems all over the world at every tropic level above plants, both aquatic and terrestrial. For us alone they do many things including recycle nutrients, pollinate, purify water, dispose of carcasses and dung, provide food, bio controls and keep soils productive. 25% of all insect species are parasites or predators of other insect species. At any one time, it is estimated there are 10 million million million insects on our planets surface. They may well be tiny but their impact is colossal. In the words of Sir David Attenborough, we should do well to remember them. So what can you do? You can record what you see using websites such as www.ispot.org.uk to help with environmental and species monitoring. Take part in country wide citizen science projects like the recent Big Butterfly Count by www.butterfly-conservation.org. Provide habitats such as ponds, mixed wood piles, compost heaps and plant nectar rich flowers as well as larvae food plants. Leave wild areas and plant native trees. Join one of the many great societies such as the Amateur Entomologists' Society www.amentsoc.org & Buglife www.buglife.org.uk. Every little thing counts and every action really does help. Lovely Duck!‌
September is a month that is absolutely bang on for harvesting produce. Choose from fruits and vegetables and from both wild or cultivated. In fact it is the best month for getting out in to the countryside and looking for hedgerow bounty. Just remember to take a receptacle with you to carry anything you find. I really love seeing the fruits dripping from trees and bushes. The beginning of early autumn is wonderful for English plums, apples and pears with many varieties holding different flavours and colours just waiting to be munched on! Sadly though, these days, we have lost the huge amount of varieties that could be found in gardens across our fair land. For instance there are 7500 varieties of apples. Not just Cox, Braeburn and Pink Lady which are common ones found in the shops. These varieties can be for eating, cooking or cider with different levels of acidity. Plums have many cultivars too, including greengage, Victoria and Mirabelle. All great for making fantastic chutney, puddings and jams. And I love it when you find a tree in the wild that seems to just be in the middle of nowhere. Where do they come from?! These gorgeous orchard fruits are so quintessentially British but I thought that we could do something a bit different this time around veering off around the world a little. For a really quick tasty supper take 4 breasts of duck and score the skin in a little criss cross fashion. Season with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Preheat the oven to 200°C/ gas mark 6 then heat an ovenproof frying pan. Lay the duck in skin side down and fry for around 4 minutes until the fat starts to render from the skin. Turn the duck and fry for a further 2 minutes. Cut 12 plums into quarters and add to the duck along with 2 star anise then place in to the oven for 7-8 minutes. Meanwhile mix together 2tbsp honey, 1tsp chopped ginger, 1 crushed clove of garlic, 3 tbsp soy sauce, 25ml water and set aside. When the duck is ready remove it from the pan and rest on a plate, covering it with foil. Add the honey mixture to the plums and bubble for 2-3 minutes until you have a nice sticky sauce, then slice the duck and return to the pan momentarily, coating it with the sauce then serve with some lovely sticky rice.

Moderate Reds I was cornered the other day by a client wanting to know why red wines these days seem to be aimed at ‘blowing one’s head off’, often being around 14.5% alcohol by volume. He complained that these wines have a tendency of inducing a blissful comatose state, often sending him off to sleep (much to the annoyance of his wife!). What is the cause? A host of variables. Ÿ Global warming for one, increased warmth and sunshine hours leads to riper grapes with higher sugar content. The process of fermentation turns grape sugars into alcohol. Ÿ Modified yeast strains. In the past, yeast, the catalyst in the fermentation process, gave up the ghost when the alcohol level became too high. New super yeast strains can tough it out through the higher alcohol levels and work on past 16%.

Sollazzo Rosso 2012 Umbria, Italy £6.49 11.5% A blend of 45% Sangiovese, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Barbera, each grape variety was vinified (fermented) separately. Maceration on skins lasted 10 days to extract adequate colour and flavour. The cuvees were blended and left to rest in tank until bottled. This wine has no interaction with oak, preserving the purity of fruit. Primary black fruit characters dominate; cherries and blackberries on the nose with a spicy finish to the palate. Serve with light meat pasta dishes, roast meats, pizzas and cheese.

Sam and Lorraine spent 13 happy years working at Chapters before leaving to start their own hair salon, Woods Hair & Beauty, which was based at Carswell Golf Club, near Faringdon. When the opportunity arose to buy Chapters they jumped at the opportunity. “Woods was our first joint venture as business owners and a fantastic learning ground. Over seven years we built a loyal customer base from scratch and it was only because we wanted to develop the business that we were looking for larger premises. We both really admired what the previous owners, Peter and Gill Daniels, had achieved with Chapters and we’re thrilled and excited for the chance to build on their success”, said Mrs Curtis. Mrs Merchant added: “We work well together and it was this belief in our business partnership that encouraged us to make the leap from owners of a small hair salon to owners of a large and well-established salon. The location is even more perfect for me as I can walk to work; an unexpected bonus.” Staff members Sam Poole and Sharon Keen from Woods now work alongside existing Chapters staff making a team of 17, offering traditional and contemporary hair styling for men, women and children of all ages. Chapters Hair Design, one of Witney’s longest established hair salons, is situated in an area of the High Street that is fast becoming something of a destination shopping area, with mostly independent businesses offering a wide variety of unique products and services.
