EDITOR’S LETTER QUINTESSENTIAL SUMMER FUN! I think of July as the heart of summer. And the Fourth of July is the peak of summertime celebrations. In downtown San Antonio, you will find all the quintessential summer activities on and around our beautiful River Walk. July kicks off with Bud Light Stars, Stripes & Lights, where patriotic décor lines the banks of the River Walk and the free Armed Forces River Parade celebrates all branches of our military. While you are strolling the tropically landscaped River Walk, take a break with some tropical-inspired snacks and drinks at Margaritaville, LandShark, The Frosty Dog and Rainforest Café, to name a few who serve luscious frozen margaritas and such. For a touch of tiki, try Hugman’s Oasis. Then pop in for ice cream at Justin’s and Ben & Jerry’s—the perfect way to stay cool and refreshed.

What would summer be without movies after dark? There are plenty of venues to choose from, most of which are free to enjoy. If kids are in tow, there are lots of daytime adventures to keep them busy before winding down for a fun flick. If you are searching for ways to get around downtown—read on! These cool rides take you to all the popular hotspots to check out local artists, historic sites, shopping and dining. While you are touring, watch for San Antonio’s famous faux bois— famous thanks to Martha Stewart, but we have known all along that these concrete structures formed to look like real wood are a fascinating art form. In closing, I extend my condolences to the family of David J. Straus II, whose legacy stems from his contributions to San Antonio, and especially our River Walk. It would not be what it is today, had it not been for him. I hope you experience all of the wonderful things it has to offer.

David Str aus: River Walk Visionary By Susan Yerkes DAVID JAY STR AUS II packed a half a dozen lifetimes of accomplishment into his 98 years. Businessman, civic leader, proud Marine, r ancher, restaur ateur, horseman and all-around outdoorsman, he was also a loving father, husband and brother, and a treasured friend to many. His stories could fill a dozen books. One of his most lasting legacies is his passionate work to revive and revitalize the River Walk. That work was so important that he is often referred to as “The Father of the Modern River Walk.” It’s a story worth retelling.

Visit the River Walk today, and you may find it hard to believe that in the late ‘50s it was a derelict and abandoned place. The downtown “Horseshoe Bend” of the river—now the River Walk’s colorful heart, had already survived a misbegotten plan to pave it over in the 1920s. Fortunately, the San Antonio Conservation Society and others rallied to the rescue. The Bend was preserved, but neglected. A few years later architect Robert H. H. Hugman unveiled a grand plan to turn the straggly stream into a gorgeous destination—a landscaped linear park with a mix of “banks, shops, clubs and cafes” along with residential and recreational areas. It was 1939 before the plan began to be realized, when the Depression-era WPA supplied money and men to build the broad walks, arched bridges and stone steps of Hugman’s plan that distinguish the River Walk today. But World War II intervened, and by war’s end the downtown river had devolved into an unsightly, poorly maintained haven for winos and tramps, off-limits to the military and shunned by locals. In 1946, Casa Rio opened on the Bend, but it stood alone for years. Everyone thought something should be done about the River Walk, but nobody took the initiative. Until David Straus stepped in. A prominent member of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Straus thought the River Walk could be a major tourist attraction. He proposed a committee to come up with ideas and raise funds for formal studies – first hiring a company that had done work for Disney, and, when their ideas were too outlandish, commissioned the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects to prepare a comprehensive

master plan to bring life to the River Walk. “My father’s long-term service to the River Walk was fueled by his vision of what we see today—keep the ‘Old San Antonio Charm,’ but have a ‘park’ that is interesting and pleasant,” said his son, David Straus III. At the time, most buildings along the river faced out to the street, and Straus’ efforts to persuade property owners to open river-facing businesses failed. So he found investors, bought three buildings and renovated them into a model complex of riverside shops and restaurants. Soon others followed suit. He pushed the city to establish a River Walk Commission, and personally wrote a policy manual to ensure development didn’t wreck the River Walk’s beauty. When the city began planning for an ambitious Hemisfair, Straus championed the River Walk as the perfect focus for the burgeoning tourism business. He proposed a river boat business, with dinner and tour barges. And when the City Council balked, he paid to have a sample barge built and invited Council members for a demo ride, which changed their minds and established today’s river barge business, in time for Hemisfair tourists to experience the revitalized River Walk. He led lobbying for legalized liquor by the drink, another boost for downtown businesses. “He certainly was the prime mover of getting the River Walk ready for Hemisfair—and because it was ready, it got the city’s attention and support. He started doing it before Hemisfair, though—and not for that reason,“ said Lewis Fisher, author of American Venice: The Epic Story of San Antonio’s River. “He just believed it was good for the city. If he hadn’t

done what he did, the river would not be what it is to San Antonio today.” One of Straus’ most important projects was the creation of Paseo del Rio, an organization of River Walk businesses to plan and promote tourism with fun events, while maintaining the unique ambience of this special place as it grew. It operated independently for more than 50 years, and recently became part of Visit San Antonio. “One thing I remember from him was the importance of always serving the river operators while protecting and preserving the River Walk. He always cared about the little guy, supporting local businesses,” recalled Greg Gallaspy, who headed Paseo del Rio in the ‘90s. Straus lived to see the spectacular results of his passionate work for the River Walk. Today, some 12 million tourists and more than a million residents visit the River Walk each year. And while national chains have brought more bustle and glitz to the Bend, the recently developed Museum and Mission Reaches of the River Walk now extend its special beauty for miles. “The San Antonio River Walk is the most visited attraction in the state, and this never would have happened without the initiative and work done by Mr. Straus,” said Visit San Antonio’s Maggie Thompson, who served as executive director of Paseo del Rio from 2015 to 2021. “Because of the great impact of the River Walk, the entire city of San Antonio has grown and benefitted by his accomplishments.” Straus died in May. But his passionate love for his city lives on in the beauty and spirit of the River Walk.

SIP & SAVOR

Tropical

onders By Kimberly A. Suta

IN THE ALAMO CITY

It is undeniable that summer is here in full force, and the only way to beat the heat is with some tropical refreshments. Here is what we have got! One of the best aspects of our San Antonio River Walk is you can pop down there for a quick afternoon or evening of revelry and it feels like you have been whisked away to a tropical locale. With the swaying palm trees and exotic drinks, I feel like I have had a mini vacay. To that end, I like to swing by The Frosty Dog, which is located right outside the Hyatt Regency San Antonio Riverwalk and grab one of their refreshing frozen drinks to-go—my all-time favorite being the pina colada. With the new TABC laws, visitors can now roam the River Walk freely, enjoying their alcoholic beverages. Previously, visitors were only allowed to carry wine and

beer-based beverages. Still, The Frosty Dog is one of the only locations that uses liquor in their frozen drinks, including margaritas, daiquiris and pina coladas. They also offer souvenir yards, from 18 oz. to 46 oz., with drinks on the rocks. One of the most popular options is the hurricane with a 151 floater. After a few rounds of these, just make sure to order an Uber.

HUGMAN’S OASIS Also located on the River Walk along E. Commerce Street is a new bar called Hugman’s Oasis, a tiki bar serving exotic craft cocktails designed by one of San Antonio’s premier mixologists, Benjamin Krick, along with Rob Barter and team. Hugman’s Oasis promises to “transport guests on a South Pacific getaway” with their world-class tropical drinks and lu’aus.

Mi Roti, photo by Lucero Trevino

Signature cocktails include tasty options such as the Palapala Kono, made with grilled pineapple rum, scotch, maraschino, al pastor, pineapple and lime and Hugman’s Private Stock, made with rum blend #2, spiced cocoa, palm sugar and tiki bitters. The list goes on! LANDSHARK Next up, we have LandShark® Bar & Grill, which offers a tropical experience and scenic views of the famous River Walk from their remote patio. This fun, casual joint is inspired by the amazing beach hot spots that once dotted the Atlantic coast.

Hugman's Oasis

The Frosty Dog

Not only can you enjoy tropical drinks such as the 5 o’Clock Somewhere®— made with Margaritaville® silver rum and paradise passion fruit tequila, Cruzan hurricane proof rum, orange and pineapple juices, house sweet and sour and a splash of grenadine served on the rocks, but you can grab a bite to eat, too. I recommend the blackened fish tacos, made with the “catch of the day” wrapped in flour tortillas and layered with a yummy bacon aioli, shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes. You may not be on the coast, but it will certainly feel like it.

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

MARGARITAVILLE You can easily hop over to LandShark’s beloved sister restaurant and bar, Margaritaville®, to keep the party going. Margaritaville ensures they have everything you could possibly need for a good time, and that includes a giant flowing margarita machine, islandinspired flavors, live entertainment on their patio and indoor stage, a covered outdoor 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar, which overlooks the San Antonio River and, to top it off, an elevated indoor tiki bar. Make sure to try out their Who’s to Blame Margarita, served in a Margaritaville blender cup. Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame, but after a few of these drinks, no one will care. If you are feeling peckish, or to be honest, on the verge of hangry, order the Volcano Nachos. This hearty mountain of tortilla chips is smothered with beef, black bean chili, shredded fiesta cheese, creamy queso, pico de gallo, sour cream, pickled jalapenos and fresh guacamole. Like I said, bring your appetite! MI ROTI As we shift over the Caribbean, there are a few excellent spots to add to your list. Located at the Historic Pearl’s Food Hall, you will discover Mi Roti, a concept created by one of San Antonio’s most acclaimed chefs, Nicola Blaque along with her husband and partner, Cornelius Massey, also of The Jerk Shack. Chef Nicola was born in Jamaica but moved to the states when she was 5 years old. Mi Roti just launched a new menu and serves up roti wraps (a Caribbean flat bread similar to large flour tortillas) and bowls packed with different proteins, RIO Magazine

veggies, rice and incredible sauces. Chef Nicola’s favorite new option is the Cuban Picadilla, a sweetspicy mélange of beef, olives, raisins and tomato sauce. You can order the Mambo Combo #1, which also comes with cilantro lime rice, roasted corn, shredded carrots, pickled onions and peppers, green onions, garlic sauce and avocado cream, or you can build your own as you like. I adore their flavorful Caribbean Pinto Beans, which are slow-cooked in onions, garlic and Caribbean spices for my side or you can request masala fries or plantains. It is a lot to eat for one meal, but if you cut it in half, you will have some late-night leftovers. The Jerk Shack, which also serves up Caribbeaninspired dishes, just opened up a brick and mortar on the west side of San Antonio and has plans to open up another restaurant in Hemisfair Park next year.

Jamaica Jamaica Cuisine

JAMAICA JAMAICA CUISINE And, finally, you will have to travel outside of the convenient downtown area to sample Jamaica Jamaica Cuisine, but it is most definitely worth the commute. Chef Angello Gordon hails from Jamaica and has created an authentic menu offering JamaicanCaribbean-West Indian fusions. With over a decade under its belt serving San Antonio, you can bet you are in for a tropical treat. It is a great place to go for dinner, but an even better place for happy hour. Dig into some perfectly spiced Jerk Chicken Wings, Mango Scotch Bonnet Wings or BBQ Jerk Wings or go for the gold with some Stovetop Jerk Chicken made with rice and peas, steamed seasoned cabbage and traditional plantains. Cool off with one of their signature tropical cocktails— everyone’s favorite Rum Punch, an Island Tini or Liquid Mary Jane. Make sure to check their social media for upcoming events. They know how to throw a party, island-style! WRITER’S BIO Kimberly A. ESCAPE ROOM Escape rooms are the latest craze and your kids and family will be thrilled trying out this fun interactive adventure. Escape rooms are hands-on group game venues created by professional game designers, organizational behaviorists, psychologists, mathematicians, lighting and set engineers and other professionals. Challenging and fun, these exercises in exciting teamwork involve brain teasers and friendly competition. Family members of all ages (usually in groups of 10 or fewer) will enjoy rooms with different puzzles and themes. Imagine you have got just 60 minutes to find your way out of a locked room based on a fun storyline, using just your brain and a series of puzzles, clues, plot twists and challenges. This all takes place in clever spaces enhanced with impressive lighting effects, entertaining set designs, thunderous sounds and more. San Antonio escape rooms and “panic rooms” include these, among others: Escape the Room, Komnata Quest, Great Rooms Escape, Exit Game Escape Room, Extreme Escape and the San Antonio Panic Room. These mystery-theatre-meets-reality immersive experiences include different levels of difficulty: some rooms are designed to be a bit more challenging than most and others tend to be a bit creepy or have things that jump out and scare guests, while most just have family-friendly storylines like an old Wild West bank heist, a cabin or a vault or a prison cell to escape. Most escapes take an hour or less and are fine for families with kids. Choose an escape game based on your own comfort level.

WITTE & DOSEUM CAMPS Parents can plan ahead for their kids to enjoy days of adventures with other kids at various San Antonio museum day camps. For starters, enjoy the numerous educational and fun day camps and classes at both the Witte Museum and the DoSEUM. From June 6 through August 12, San Antonio’s popular DoSEUM on Broadway offers 20 different camp options this summer. Go on a dinosaur dig, explore the Earth and why it matters, design your own fashion collection and even participate in a DoSEUM-wide spy mission or have some water fun. The Witte Museum, also on Broadway, is often a place that

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

stimulates kids’ imaginations and thrills them with fun adventures. So, every day is an adventure at Witte Museum Camp. These summer camps for kids cover themes like cooking, the art of nature, engineering and more. Different events are available for kids ages 6-12. And with a wide range of themes and camps occurring throughout the year, the Witte offers year-round fun for everyone. This July, do not miss the STEAM Sunday event on July 10 at 1:30pm for a “Foliage Folios” experience at the Memorial Auditorium at the Witte Museum. Here, kids and adults together can learn what a herbarium is and how is it used. This hands-on workshop examines the helpful and harmful properties of different plants. You will create your own pressed plant art, as well as a press you can use for future art.

There is certainly an art to San Antonio. Whether it is the city’s natural beauty with the river weaving through it like a glistening ribbon or the classic architecture of the city’s beloved Missions, there is something inspiring everywhere you look. And of course, the city is home to world-class art museums, including the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Briscoe Western Art Museum right along the river banks. But San Antonio’s art scene flows far beyond museums. In galleries big and small across the city, you can enjoy gazing at an array of works, often talking to the artists themselves, and find fabulous pieces to add to your home. Starting in Southtown, a San Antonio neighborhood that is home to a variety of artists’ studios and work spaces, as well as fabulous dining, you can enjoy “First Fridays” on the first Friday evening of the thesanantonioriverwalk.com

You can make up for it with a must-see experience at Garcia Art Glass, where you will be amazed by the art and function created with the aid of a 2200-degree furnace. The studio’s collection of one-of-a-kind, handblown art creations is mesmerizing. Each piece is more fantastic than the next, with vases, platters, paperweights and statues that defy description. colorful, sleek treasures they create. Make time to stop by, watch them craft and then wonder at the pieces you can take home. Just steps away from Southtown, do not miss a great find in a great spot: the San Antonio Art League & Museum (SAALM). Established in 1912, the San Antonio Art League is the oldest arts organization in the city. Housed in a venerable building in the heart of the King William Historic District built in 1896, this intimate house-turnedmuseum and gallery now houses over 600 works in its permanent collection, which focuses on Texas artists. Another destination that never fails to yield art treasure is a visit to La Villita Historic Arts Village. For an array of art that will make it hard to choose what to take home, stop by River Art Group. A fine art gallery operated by a cooperative of 160 active artists all located within a 75-mile radius of San Antonio, the bright yellow historic home with a welcoming front porch beckons you to come inside where you will find works in acrylic, oil, watercolor, pen and ink, pastel, photography, clay, glass, metal, wood and more. The gallery is member-staffed, so on any given day you can meet one of the artists behind some of the fabulous works available. Chatting with them about their work provides perspective on what you are seeing and gives you a glimpse behind the art. With a wide selection of San Antonio-inspired pieces, an array of medium on display and a variety of price points suited for any budget, you can spend hours admiring the works and deciding which will make the perfect addition to your collection or a great gift for just about anyone you know. If a hot find is what you have in mind, Caliente Hot Glass Studio is the perfect destination. And we do mean hot: the delicate glass art that gleams in the studio is crafted with more than 2000 degrees of heat. The color and craft on display at Caliente is not what you would expect to find tucked away in an industrial space just north of downtown. The studio features a beautiful array of art glass running the gamut of RIO Magazine

Go to shop, but stay for the show if you can. If you are lucky, you might catch one of the artists working on a piece. They do not use molds to mass produce pieces, making each one unique. The small gallery glistens and gleams with light dancing off the pieces on display. You will find vases, platters, paperweights, ornaments, bowls, jewelry and more, making it easy to start your own collection. Not far from downtown you will discover galleries dotting San Antonio’s Broadway Street, allowing you to hop from one to the next in search of a great art find. A must stop is AnArte Gallery, a true feast for your eyes. Exhibiting contemporary art in all media, representing emerging and established local and international artists, AnArte hosts monthly art openings that typically include an art talk, allowing you to gain insight on the artist and their works. One of the longest-running galleries in San Antonio, its mission is to be innovative and compelling, offering a space where the public can directly experience the work and ideas of living artists and understand the historical, social and cultural context of the art of our time. Stepping into any of its exhibitions will captivate you, and if you do not see something that fits your need, AnArte offers the opportunity to commission artworks from any of their artists.

Artistic Alchemy San Antonio’s Fabulous Faux Bois By Susan Yerkes

An intimate oasis on the River Walk—a cool, shadowy stone cavern with splashing waterfalls where an otherworldly Father Nature looms from the carved walls. A magnificent wooden pedestrian bridge made from tree trunks. An airy arbor of entwined branches on a lush, quiet section of the river. A shady palapa over log stools, built around a magnificent tree trunk. All beautiful San Antonio landmarks in old wood or natural stone. But do not let your eyes deceive you. Things are not always what they seem. Instead of wood and stone, the structures are concrete, cement and relatively soft steel rods and mesh, carefully shaped and colored and transformed into oh-so-natural form. This is the artistic alchemy of trabajo rustico, (Spanish for rustic work) or faux bois (French for fake wood). It is an art that literally imitates nature—so well that sometimes you just cannot tell the difference. For more than 100 years, San Antonio has been the epicenter of the craft in North America, and in the last couple of decades its popularity has soared nationally. It is not only used for private gardens and public monuments now—it is fancy furniture and sculptures, too. Decorating diva Martha Stewart set the tone when she commissioned a 2,100-pound faux bois table after seeing some of San Antonio’s beloved faux bois landmarks—many of them listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the early 1920s, Dionicio Rodriguez, a skilled craftsman from Mexico, brought the tools of his trade to San Antonio. The local geology was perfect—the Edwards Plateau’s abundant limestone attracted many quarries that produced the Portland cement used to make concrete. Rodriguez quickly found patrons eager to commission his work, both in San Antonio and in other states, where his distinctive works are also prized. But most of his creations are here. Rodriguez is still widely regarded as the grand master of the art of faux bois. He guarded his methods closely, reportedly keeping his tools in the thesanantonioriverwalk.com

trunk of his car. The sheer number of projects and the scale of many of them often required assistants. Some of them learned his techniques and went on to complete projects of their own, passing the skills and secrets on through time. Today, the most prominent is Rodriguez’s grand-nephew, Carlos Cortés, whose father Maximo worked with Rodriguez. After Rodriguez died in 1955, Maximo carried on the craft, working well into his 90s. Cortés learned from his father and continues to refine the art, restoring and repairing aging or damaged pieces and creating his own designs. rtes at work Carlos CoCarlos Cortez Martha Stewart commissioned him to create the huge faux bois table and other pieces, and her enthusiasm for the craft propelled him into the national spotlight. More recently, his Grotto, made for the San Antonio’s River Foundation’s public art series, is one of the most memorable places on the River Walk Museum Reach. Most days Cortés can be found at work in his Southtown studio, where the big, fenced yard is a fascinating collection of pieces in progress. Unlike his predecessors, he shares his methods and materials freely, giving lessons and occasionally even posting how-to videos on Instagram. San Antonio art historian Patsy Pittman Light has written extensively about the history of faux bois and Dionicio Rodriguez and his artistic successors. Her recent book, Artisans of Trabajo Rustico: The Legacy of Dionicio Rodriguez, is a beautiful coffee-table volume with photographs and detailed explanations of the craft by artist Kent Rush. It is a great way to learn more about this marvelous artistic mimicry. For a more up-close, personal look at some of San Antonio’s trabajo rustico landmarks, take a self-guided tour of some of the highlights. RIO Magazine

River Walk Grotto - On the Museum Reach of the River Walk between the Camden and Newell Street bridges, just south of Pearl: Carlos Cortés’ fantastic three-story cave-like grotto is a cool, dreamlike sculpted cement structure with splashing waterfalls, stalactites and the enormous face of Father Nature carved into a wall. A winding cave stair goes to a street level exit through a huge faux stone jaguar head. Just across the river on this level, Cortés built a shady treelike palapa with log stools. Arbor at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts: Just beyond the Tobin’s big river front plaza you will find Carlos Cortés’ arbor of tree trunks with their entwined branches overhead. It is one of downtown’s lushest, most peaceful spots. San Antonio Museum of Art: The interior courtyard houses Rodriguez’s elaborate Urrutia Gate. The gate was once an entrance built to Miraflores, an art-filled private park owned by Rodriguez’s original San Antonio patron, Dr. Aureliano Urrutia. (Miraflores, where other Rodriguez pieces have been restored, is now a part of the Brackenridge Park Conservancy.) Brackenridge Park: The 344-acre central crown jewel of San Antonio parks is home to many of Rodriguez’s works. Do not miss the pedestrian bridge along the main drive, formed by 33 parallel pairs of vertical faux tree trunks. His large “hollow log” shelter just off the Tuleta Drive park entrance is perfect for group photos or selfies. Two shaded palapa benches are near the Koehler Pavilion. Cortés partnered on the landmark Torii Gate at the Japanese Tea Garden (re-named the Chinese Tea Garden during and for years after World War II). The eye-catching faux bois railings of the Witte Museum’s Treehouse at the Tuleta entrance are by Carlos Cortés. Quarry Shopping Center: Located on the former site of Alamo Cement, you will find many of Rodriguez’s commissioned works. At Ida Claire restaurant, once Alamo Cement’s managing office, the 125-foot faux bois fence around the patio courtyard is said to represent the different wood and bark of a variety of native trees found in Mexico. The courtyard’s arched tree-trunk entrance is signed by Rodriguez. He also made the courtyard’s palapa-shaded fountain. St. Anthony de Padua Church: This modest Catholic church with its Alamo-shaped façade, originally built for Alamo Cement’s quarry laborers, is home to some of Rodriguez’s most unusual work. Among rows of pecan trees in the grassy churchyard stand fourteen 16-foottall Stations of the Cross with triple parapets made of stacked honeycomb limestone rocks from the Texas Hill Country. Rodriguez also made a grotto of the same limestone rocks, sprinkled liberally with seashells, near the church’s tiny original chapel.
