New Miss U to Filipinos: You are exceptional! By Azer N. Parrocha

MANILA, Jan. 30 (PNA) – For Miss France Iris Mittenaere, winning the Miss Universe 2016 title was a “dream come true” but she said that getting a warm welcome from Filipinos was also worth celebrating. “Thank you to all Filipinos—you are exceptional. You are so welcoming and so lovely with us,” the 24-year-old beauty queen said in a press conference after she was crowned. Mittenaere, a dentistry student, said that all the candidates in the pageant loved the country and the people. Her favorite tourist destination in the Philippines, she said, was

Cebu because she enjoyed the “sunny” weather. She said that like her predecessor, 2015 Miss Universe-Philippines Pia Wurtzbach, she was looking forward to travelling around the world. “Miss Universe is a dream. I saw what Pia did. I want to do that also. I want to understand people. I want to travel and meet people that’s why it is a dream for me to be Miss Universe,” Mittenaere said. She stressed that it was about time that France got another Miss Universe title because according to her “French people love beauty pageants but don’t really know Miss Universe” because her counSee MISS UNIVERSE, page 12

IT’S NOT A MUSLIM BAN – TRUMP

WASHINGTON, Jan. 29 (PNA/PTI) – Unfazed by growing criticism, US President Donald Trump today defended his controversial immigration order that bans travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries, asserting that it is working “very nicely” even as he maintained that it is not a ban on Muslims. “It’s working out very nicely. You see it at the airports, you see it all over,” Trump told reporters even as the sweeping immigration order caused chaos and confusion at airports across the country, triggering widespread protests. He, however, denied that barring refugees from several predominantly Muslim nations amounted to a ban on Muslims. “It’s not a Muslim ban, but we are totally prepared,” Trump told reporters after he signed three more executive orders related to lobbying ban, plan to defeat ISIS and reorganization of National Security Council. President Trump yesterday or-

dered “extreme vetting” of people entering the US from seven Muslim-majority countries and banned the entry of Syrian refugees until further notice, as part of new measures to “keep radical Islamic terrorists” out of America. The countries impacted are Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. The controversial move, signed a week after he was sworn- in as the President, fulfills the vow Trump made on the campaign trail to limit Muslim immigration to the US. The immigration order, however, hit a roadblock when a fedSee TRUMPH, page 12

Dela Rosa dissolves anti-illegal drug group By Perfecto T. Raymundo

MANILA, Jan. 30 (PNA) – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa on Monday announced the PNP Anti-Illegal Drugs Group (PNP-AIDG) is dissolved after a series of police involvement in illegal drugs trade and planting of evidence. The PNP chief made such an announcement during a press conference in Camp Crame, Quezon City. Dela Rosa said President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has ordered him to stop temporarily the “war on drugs” and instead the PNP should focus on its “internal cleansing”. ”We are under the Executive Department. We take orders from the President,” he said. ”Again, hindi po lahat ng anti-drug units ng PNP ay masasamang tao. May mga bad eggs lang po diyan pero hindi lahat (Not all the PNP anti-drug units are bad people. There are only bad eggs but not all). I am sorry for them,” he added. ”Most of them are performing very well and I am very sorry for their eventual dissolution dahil nadamay sila ng kalokohan ng iba. I am very sorry for them. Marami sa kanila ang nagbuwis ng buhay. Marami sa kanila ang nasugatan. Marami sa kanila ang nagkakaso. Hinaharass ng mga tinamaan nila, counter-charges because of their See DELA ROSA, page 12

Lifestyle check for rogue cops eyed By Azer N. Parrocha

MANILA, Jan 27 (PNA) – A senator is calling for a lifestyle check among Philippine National Police (PNP) scalawags after it was revealed that SPO3 Ricky Sta. Isabel, primary suspect in the abduction-killing of Korean businessman Jee IckJoo, declared over Php 17 million net worth despite his Php 8,000 monthly salary. Sen. Grace Poe wanted Sta. Isabel and other cops facing charges for the slaying of Jee namely PNP Anti-Illegal Drugs Group Chief Supt. Rafael Dumlao, SPO4 Roy Villegas, Ramon Yalung, among others to get lifestyle checked. Poe said that it was suspicious how Sta. Isabel also had Php 14 million assets, Php 2 million worth of properties, owned five houses, a four-story commercial building, three cars and one motorcycle despite his mea-

ger income. This piece of information about Sta. Isabel was revealed by PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Director Chief Supt. Roel Obusan during the Senate inquiry into Jee’s killing held Thursday. Sta. Isabel said that his wife Jinky, a law graduate, was responsible for earning most of their income to run their businesses including lotto and remittance businesses. Senators, however, found his statement suspicious. Poe meanwhile said that with the freedom of information in the Executive and a civilian head in the PNP Internal Affairs Service (IAS), she will request for the statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) of the accused cops. “Gen. (Ronald) Dela Rosa said that he has a list of all rogue policemen. Maybe we

can start with that list. Let us compare their SALNs,” Poe told reporters. Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, chair of the Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs, said that it was also questionable why Sta. Isabel needed to be represented by a lawyer from the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) when it seemed like he could afford his own legal counsel. PAO supposedly offers free legal counsel to indigent persons who cannot afford lawyers. Lacson stressed that the PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) should exert more effort to discipline and dismiss cops involved in criminal activity. He also said that he believed Dela Rosa could redeem the reputation of the PNP if efforts to cleanse the police ranks were at par with efforts to eliminate the illegal drug trade.

DND: No problem with delisting of Sison from US terror list By Priam F. Nepomuceno

MANILA, Jan. 29 (PNA) – Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the defense and military establishments have no problem with calls to remove the name of National Democratic Front (NDF) political consultant Jose Maria Sison from the United States’ list of terrorists. “As far as I am concerned, the defense department or the Armed Forces of the Philippines, has no problem with the delisting of (Sison)

as head of terrorist organization,” he added. Lorenzana said it is only natural as the government is now talking with the insurgents as part of the efforts to restore peace in the countryside. However, he stressed that Sison’s removal from the US terror list, despite Philippine request, is still the prerogative of the US government. “It’s up to the US on whether they would heed our request. That’s actually their prerogative to delist or

not delist people in their list who are terrorists,” the DND chief said. A joint statement to be issued at the end of the third round of formal talks between the NDF and government negotiators in Rome included a request to US government to take out the name of Sison from its list of terrorists. “We have a basis (for such request), considering he is in the process, the peace talks, which negates the character of a terrorist,” government lead negotiator Silvestre Bello III said.

AFP condemns series of unprovoked NPA attacks on military units MANILA, Jan. 31 (PNA) – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Tuesday strongly condemned the series of unprovoked New People’s Army (NPA) attacks which resulted in the death of two soldiers, wounding of three and abduction of one during the past two days. These rebels attacks took place in Echague, Isabela, Surigao City and Surigao Del Norte, AFP public affairs officers chief Col. Edgard Arevalo said. The first incident happened Sunday when around 15 NPA rebels abducted an unarmed and civilian-clad Pfc. Erwin Salan of the 30th Infantry Battalion. The victim and some civilian volunteers just came a civic-action activity in Barangay Budlingin, Alegria, Surigao Del Norte when snatched by the rebels. “He is on a legitimate, non-military activity intended to help preserve a tourist

spot which is the source of livelihood for the locals of Algeria, Surigao,” Arevalo said. On Monday, around 8:45 a.m., a trooper from the 86th Infantry Battalion was killed and the other wounded but later died while undergoing treatment when ambushed by NPA rebels in Echague, Isabela. “The unarmed victims on-board a motorcycle were waylaid while they were on their way to Department of Environment and Natural Resources Office in San Isidro to follow up a tree-planting project,” he added. Also on Monday noon, an estimated 10 NPAs attacked the troops of 30th Infantry Battalion who were supporting the local government unit in Sitio Brazil, Barangay Mat-i, Surigao City with their “peace and development” activities. “Three soldiers were wounded. More could have

been killed or wounded where if not for the prompt action of the troops who managed to push the rebels to withdraw out of the community,” Arevalo said. The AFP public spokesperson officer called this series of attacks very disturbing and said they have reported the incidents to the appropriate authorities. “We have reported these unfortunate incidents to the Office of the Presidential Assistant on the Peace Process. While we adhere to the primacy of the peace process, we demand the release of Pfc. Salan. We urged them to stop attacking the soldiers,” he added. Arevalo said these attacks violate the NPA’s declaration of their own ceasefire. “Those acts are actually assault to the communities and its people who sought for the assistance of the Army in improving their lives,” he added.

10,404 cops promoted to next higher rank

MANILA, Jan. 31 (PNA) – A total of 10,404 Police Commissioned Officers (PCO) and Police Non-Commissioned Officers (PNCO) were promoted to the next higher rank during a simultaneous mass oathtaking and pinning of ranks at the PNP National Headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City and different police offices and units nationwide Monday. From a total of 11,528 vacancies, 1,067 PCO and 9,337 PNCO applicants have passed the examination and interviews for the 2nd Semester CY 2016 Regular Promotion Program and

were found qualified for promotion effective Dec. 31, 2016. In the National Headquarters, 376 PCOs and 1,557 PNCOs were included in the said program assigned at Crame-based National Support Units, Command Group and Directorial Staff. Each unit and office has its PCO and PNCO Promotion Board who processed the applications of those who are qualified for Permanent Appointment to the next higher ranks. “To the promotees you know to serve, you know very well to serve. Kung

kayo ay sindikato, kayo ay pinapatamaan ko. Kung kayo ay matino kayo yung ineencourage ko na tumulong para malinis itong PNP,” PNP chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa said during the event in turn to his dismay to police scalawags who tarnished the primary project of the PNP against illegal drugs. Dela Rosa also reminded all police personnel to instill discipline at all times from the smallest things to do like tying their when in uniform (for policewomen) and when giving instructions to their subordinates.

CBCP stands firm against death penalty By Ferdinand G.Patinio

MANILA, Jan. 30 (PNA) – The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is standing firm over its position on the reimposition of the death penalty as capital punishment in the country. In a statement issued at the end of its 114th Plenary Assembly, CBPC President Archbishop Socrates Villegas noted that everyone has the right to live and should be given the chance to change. “We regret that there are strident efforts to restore the death penalty. Though the crime be heinous, no person is ever beyond redemption, and we have no

right ever giving up on any person,” he said. The Lingayen-Dagupan prelate added, “When we condemn violence, we cannot ourselves be its perpetrators, and when we decry murder, we cannot ourselves participate in murder, no matter that it may be accompanied by the trappings of judicial and legal process.” He noted that the bad effects of the death penalty all over the world should be the reason for the country not to support and reimposed the capital punishment. “Throughout the world, the trend against the death penalty is unmistakable, and international cove-

nants, one of which the Philippines is party to, obligate us not to impose the death penalty,” Villegas added. At the same time, the CBCP head asked the government to advocate life for all. “We urge the government to champion life for all!” he said. President Rodrigo Duterte is pushing for the revival of the death penalty in the country. A bill to reinstate death penalty is pending before the House of Representatives. The conference’s bi-annual meeting is being held every January and July where they discuss social, internal and church matters.

Duterte to MNLF, MILF: Do not provide sanctuary to terrorists By Noel Y. Punzalan

CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao, Jan. 27 (PNA) – President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has urged both the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) not to provide sanctuary to perceived terrorists to keep the peace in Mindanao. The President made the call in this camp Friday following a closed door meeting with military officials assigned at various parts of the island-region. “We are facing a more dangerous enemy, I am referring to the ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), but I am more worried with (suspicious–looking) Islamic scholars wandering around here (nowadays),” the President said as he addressed men of this camp, which is the headquarters of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID). He assured the 6ID men that he is with them all the way in the fight against the enemies of the state. “We are facing a serious problem so let us not wait,” he said. President Duterte said he recognizes the fact that

Mag

the Moro people were the first settlers of Mindanao but urged Muslim brothers to just talk peace and make necessary adjustments. “It is because if we would not covert Mindanao into a federal state, walang katapusan ito (there won’t be an end to this),” he stressed. Mr. Duterte noted that if the economy of Mindanao, wh suffers from being the breadbasket of the country as brought about by threats of terrorism, then the problem should be faced head-on. “I still want peace. I want to talk, but if extremism persists, wala na ako magagawa (I cannot do anything), he said. The Chief Executive then added, “Nakikiusap po ako sa (I appeal to) MILF at (and) MNLF not to provide sanctuary to these terrorists kasi hinahanap namin sila dahil may atraso sila (we are hunting them because they have committed crimes).” The President then warned the two Moro fronts against welcoming members of the Maute terror group into their camps as he would be forced to order the military to enter their encampments.

“I have so much to give but wag nyo akong pigain because I do not own the government. I am guided by the will of the majority in the government,” he said. While here, the President also awarded 12 soldiers wounded in a day-long gun battle with armed men in the interiors of Ampatuan town on Thursday, particularly in Barangays Salman and Saniag, in search for Ampatuan Mayor Rasul Sangki. Sangki is included in Malacañang’s list of politicians allegedly involved in trafficking of the illegal drug methamphetamine hydrochloride or “shabu.” The soldiers bestowed by the President with wounded personnel awards were Ssgts. Manuel Asania and Arvin Esperanza; Sgts. Elmer Pelle and Leonardo Remulta; Cpl. Raffy Matingkal; Pfc. Jerusel Castaneda; and Pvts. Alden Cahoy, Eldie Mallorca, Erwin Mistoso, Harold John Dionisio, Cresaldy Coronado and Vincent John Gregorio. Apart from terrorism, the Duterte administration is also committed to clearing the country of illegal drugs.

MANILA, Jan. 30 (PNA) – Miss Universe Organization (MUO) president Paula Shugart on Monday described the Philippine hosting of the prestigious beauty pageant as the ‘best show’ she has ever done. “This is the best show I’ve

ever done. I’m honored to have a panel that consists of former winners,” Shugart told media in a press conference after Miss France Iris Mittenaere was proclaimed the new Miss Universe. Shugart even gave former Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis

“Chavit” Singson of the pageant host committee, LCS Group of Companies a sash that read “Mister Universe” as a token of gratitude for the country’s successful hosting. In an interview with reporters, Singson said that even if Miss Philippines Maxine Medina did not bring home the coveted crown, all Filipinos were still winners especially because the event is expected to boost tourism numbers. “She did her best. That’s how it is in beauty pageants. But I don’t consider it a loss because the country’s hosting of the pageant is also an investment,” Singson said. Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Teo meanwhile said that the effect of the country’s hosting “will be (that) lots of tourists would come.” Teo also said that it proved that the Philippines is “still safe” because the agency was able to bring the 86 candidates to different provinces in the country namely Vigan, Cebu, Davao to name a few. She meanwhile expressed hope that the next boxing fight of boxer-senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao with Australian boxer Jeff Horn would take place in the Philippines instead of the two countries he is considering — Australia or United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Pacquiao was only one of the VIPs present during the coronation show. He was seated next to the common-law partner of President Rodrigo Duterte, Honeylet Avanceña. Presidnet Duterte was not spotted in the event although invited. New DOT ad The new DOT TV commercial also made an international debut during the Miss Universe pageant. It highlighted the Philippines not as just a tourist destination but instead gave another answer to the question why it’s “More Fun in the Philippines.” It opens with a male blonde-haired tourist visiting the prized Enchanted River in Surigao and while admiring the natural wonder before him, is approached by a Filipino woman. “The fish are eating, so should you, anak,” the woman said offering him kakanin (rice cake) which her children were also eating. The tourist thanks her, takes a bite and asks a man what “anak” meant to which he replies, “It means ‘my child.’” He is later introduced as Jack Ellis, a traveler. The commercial then faded to reveal the quote: “When you’re with Filipinos, you’re with family.” The ad was done with the help of global advertising

World criticizes Trump’s entry ban on 7 Muslim states CAIRO, Jan 30 (PNA/Xinhua) -- The recent temporary entry ban imposed by US President Donald Trump on visitors from seven Muslim states has been received by world and regional criticism. Friday’s decision was criticized by the seven concerned states - Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Iran - as well as Western governments including those of Canada, Britain, Germany, France, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Czech and others. It was also declined by world and regional bodies including the United Nations, the European Union and the Arab League. British Prime Minister Theresa May’s office said Sunday that the minister would interfere if the decision affected British nationals, stressing, “we do not agree with this kind of approach.” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted, “To those fleeing persecution, terror and war, Canadians will welcome you regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength,” posting a photo of him greeting a Syrian child at a Canadian airport. Trump’s entry ban was also rejected by French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, who emphasized that “welcoming refugees who are fleeing war is part of our duty.” As for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, she slammed Trump’s 90-day restrictions on the seven Muslim countries’ refugees and migrants as unjustifiable. “It is not justified to place people from a certain origin or belief under general suspicion,” said Merkel’s spokesman on Sunday, noting she raised the issue on a phone call with Trump one day following the entry ban. Also on Sunday, Sudan summoned the US charge d’affaires in Khartoum to protest the ban, while Iran summoned Switzerland’s ambassador for the same purpose, as he is the one in charge of the US interests in the Islamic Republic. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif described earlier on Sunday Trump’s entry ban as “a great gift to extremists.” A day earlier, the Iranian foreign ministry denounced the move as “an open affront against the Muslim world.” In Baghdad, the parliament’s foreign affairs committee urged on Sunday the Iraqi government to “respond equally” to Trump’s entry ban and prevent US nationals from entering the Arab country. Similar statements were made by officials from other involved Muslim countries including Libya and Yemen and some countries irrelevant to the ban like Indonesia. With regard to international and regional organizations, UN agencies jointly appealed to Washington to backtrack Trump’s anti-refugee decision, pressing “the need of refugees and migrants worldwide have never been greater, and the U.S. resettlement program is one of the most important in the world.” EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini vowed that her commission would continue to support, welcome and take care of those who flee from war. “We will keep working for peace and coexistence. This is our history, this is our identity, our work and our commitment,” she added. For his part, AL Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit voiced on Sunday his deep concern over Trump’s “unjustified restrictions,” urging the US administration to reconsider its position that would have negative social and cultural effects.

OPINION Obama ‘Fundamentally disagrees’ with Trump’s immigration travel ban MOSCOW, Jan 31 (PNA/Sputnik) – Former President Barack Obama is “heartened” by the recent demonstrations in opposition to President Trump’s controversial executive order that Obama’s spokesman said discriminates against people “because of their faith or religion.” On Friday, Trump ordered the detainment more than one-hundred passengers at US airports since they arrived from countries known to harbor high levels of terrorist activity. The move sparked rallies in the US and around the globe at airports with protesters saying #NoWallNoBan. Trump defied the protester’s concerns, noting that the ban was “a big part of my campaign.” In a statement on Sunday, Trump asserted that the executive order “is not a Muslim ban” in an attempt to quell his critics. But Obama didn’t buy it. “With regard to comparisons to President Obama’s foreign policy decisions, as we’ve heard before, the President fundamentally disagrees with the notion of discriminating against individuals because of their faith or religion,” spokesman Kevin Lewis said. “Citizens exercising their Constitutional

right to assemble, organize, and have their voice heard by their elected officials is exactly what we expect to see when American values are at stake,” he noted. The mixture of detainment and deportation for foreign nationals from countries including Yemen, Somalia, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya and Iraq, caused confusion among officials wanting to know the constitutionality of the executive order. Even though massive crowds swarmed to broadcast their displeasure, Trump awkwardly pointed out that “big problems are airports were caused by Delta computer outage,” before identifying the contributions of protesters and “the tears of Senator [Chuck] Schumer” as playing a role in the issue. The President continued that Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly told him “all is going well with very few problems.” Trump promised to unify America in his inaugural address but so far seems happy to play partisan politics by intentionally denouncing the protests, one of few acknowledgements aside from the paternalistic dictate to “study the world.”

UN ‘deeply worried’ over U.S. refugee program suspension GENEVA, Jan 31 (PNA/Xinhua) – UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi on Monday said that he is deeply worried by the uncertainty facing thousands of refugees around the world who are in the process of being resettled to the United States. A statement issued by the UN refugee agency UNHCR on Monday said that this week alone, over 800 refugees were set to make America their new home, but instead find themselves barred from travelling to the United States. UNHCR estimates that 20,000 refugees in precarious circumstances might have been resettled to the United States during the 120 days covered by the suspension announced Friday, based on average monthly figures for the last 15 years.

“Refugees are anxious, confused and heartbroken at this suspension in what is already a lengthy process,” the statement noted. According to UNHCR, the vast majority of the world’s refugees are hosted in developing countries, and less than 1 percent will ever be resettled globally. “The High Commissioner underlines once again UNHCR’s position that refugees should receive equal treatment for protection and assistance, and opportunities for resettlement, regardless of their religion, nationality or race,” the statement concluded. U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday last week enacting a vetting process for refugees coming into the United States, in the name of guarding against terrorist threats.

Duterte assures widow of slain Korean: ‘Justice would be swiftly served’ By Jelly F. Musico

MANILA, Jan. 30 (PNA) – President Rodrigo Duterte personally on Monday assured widow Choi Kyung-jin that justice would be swiftly served on the death of her husband, Korean businessman Jee Ick Joo. President Duterte made this assurance after meeting Choi and South Korean ambassador to the Philippines, Kim Jae-Shin, at the Malacanang Palace on Monday afternoon. ”The President gave his assurance to the widow of slain South Korean businessman that justice would be swiftly served,” Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said in a text message to the Palace reporters. President Duterte, Abella said, has also assured the personal safety of the bereaved family. In a press conference late Sunday night, President Duterte also directed Philippine National

Police (PNP) chief, Director General Ronald dela Rosa, to cleanse the PNP of scalawags and criminal policemen. President Duterte has tagged Police Superintendent Rafael Dumlao as the mastermind in the kidnapping and murder of the Korean executive right inside the PNP headquarters at Camp Crame in October 2016. The President also directed Dela Rosa to create an oversight committee that will look into policemen who have previous criminal records. In response to President Duterte’s directive, Dela Rosa has ordered the temporary suspension of the campaign against illegal drugs under Oplan Tokhang and Project Double Barrel to focus on cleansing the PNP ranks. In a Senate hearing last week, Choi appealed to Philippine authorities to go after the killers of her husband.

Sec. Teo: Miss Universe success is PHL’s win MANILA, Jan. 30 (PNA) – The ‘most beautiful day in the Universe’ has finally arrived today in the Philippines, with Miss France Iris Mittenaere crowned Miss Universe 2016. Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier placed second (first runner up), while Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar clinched the third spot (second runner up). Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Corazon Teo, who was present at the competition, was quick to congratulate Mittenaere for winning the most prestigious tilt, claiming that her victory is also a triumph for the Philippines. “On behalf of the Filipino people, I congratulate Miss France for bagging the Miss Universe crown from 85 other candidates from around the world. Her win is our success as the host nation,” the tourism chief said. “We join the millions of people watching from more than 190 countries worldwide in celebration over Miss Mittenaere’s success. And we are very proud and grateful that the Philippines became an important part in her journey to the Miss Universe crown,” Teo added. She is confident all the hard work that went into the staging of the 65th Miss Universe competition in the Philippines will boost the country’s bid to attract more tourists to visit the many different

destinations featured at the competition. “The Philippines is the runaway winner in this prestigious international event. Our islands, food, and the biggest smiles of our people are all over the news and social media these past few weeks. The world now knows how beautiful our islands are, how delectable our cuisines are, and how friendly and warm Filipinos are – just ask the Miss Universe candidates themselves,” Teo expounded, recalling the diverse travel itinerary of this year’s candidates had, from Boracay’s party island to the cool highlands of Baguio, to the historical town of Vigan, the colorful tapestry of Mindanao in Davao City, and to the exciting multifaceted Manila. “What you saw during your brief stay – some of top destinations, festivals, our “balut”, our Bohol Chocolate Hills – these are just a glimpse of what our 7,107 islands can offer. So today, I invite the world, come to the Philippines so you can affirm that when you are with Filipinos, you are with family,” the tourism chief remarked. With the support of President Rodrigo Duterte, the DOT tapped the support and assistance of other government agencies, along with the pageant organizers and private partners, to deliver what ought to be the “most memorable and beautiful Miss Universe edition ever.”

UN expert urges U.S. not to reinstate waterboarding GENEVA , Jan 31 (PNA/Xinhua) – The United Nations special rapporteur on torture, Nils Melzer, on Monday appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump not to reconsider the acceptability of waterboarding and other methods of torture used as interrogation techniques. In a statement published on Monday, the UN expert stressed that without any doubt, waterboarding amounts to torture. “Any tolerance, complacence or acquiescence with such practice, however exceptional and well-argued, will inevitably lead down a slippery slope towards complete arbitrariness and brute force,” he cautioned. “I urgently appeal to President Trump to carefully consider not only U.S. legal obligations, doctrine and tradition, but also the consolidated legal and moral views of the entire international community before allowing the re-introduction of

methods or interrogation that are more closely associated with barbarism than with civilization,” he added. The UN special rapporteur noted that the United States has always publicly affirmed its belief in the rule of law and respect for truth, and called on the United States to live up to the standards the nation has set both for itself and others. “If the new administration were to revive the use of torture, however, the consequences around the world would be catastrophic,” he warned. Trump said earlier last week that he is ok with torturing terrorists in order to “fight fire with fire.” “When ISIS is doing things that nobody has ever heard of since medieval times, would I feel strongly about waterboarding? As far as I am concerned, we have to fight fire with fire,” Trump said during an interview with U.S. TV network ABC.

Duterte respects Trump’s order to stop Muslim immigrants MANILA, Jan. 30 (PNA) – President Rodrigo Duterte respects United States President Donald Trump’s executive order temporarily banning citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US at least for the next 90 days. You know, Trump said, I will not interfere in the affairs of other countries. Now, if he has policies to protect his country, I’ll understand because when he said we will not interfere in you anti-drug war, you’re doing it right. As a matter of fact, my country is also facing the same serious problem, President Duterte said in a press conference late Sun-

day night. During their phone conversation last December 3, President Duterte said then US President-elect Trump admitted to him that the US is also facing a serious problem on illegal drugs. So out of respect, I can only answer him in the manner that he has told me. I will not interfere, President Duterte said. President Duterte advised the Filipinos in the US to be on the right track. If you are not allowed to stay there, get out, because if you are caught and deported, we will not lift a finger. You know it’s a violation of the law, President Duterte

said. President Duterte said he is ready to provide sanctuary for those Muslim refugees who will be affected by Trump’s order in concurrence of Congress. In the name of humanity and God, we’ll have to make some adjustments. If there is a compelling reason for us to offer sanctuary, I’m one of those that it is okay for me, the President said. Those who have no place to go, if they cannot go anywhere, anymore, except to face death by hunger, we will consider it but it has to be in concurrence of Congress. I have no problem accepting refugees, he added.

7,000 OFWs to be deported from Malaysia MANILA, Jan. 30 (PNA) – Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo on Monday assured that her department will exert all efforts to help settle Filipino migrant workers returning to the country. Taguiwalo made the assurance following reports that Sabah will begin to deport thousands of illegal immigrants from the Philippines using the assets of the Malaysian Royal Navy this February. News reports have quoted Malaysian Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman that preparations for the mass deportation were being finalized following the agreement between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and President Rodrigo Duterte last November. President Duterte has agreed to give his full cooperation to Malaysia, while the latter has committed to loan its naval ships to deport Filipinos with no legal documentation. According to Malaysian

reports, the deportation centers in Sabah have already exceeded their capacity with more than 7,000 undocumented migrants. The process of deportation will be via the Sandakan Port to Zamboanga. “President Duterte has said that our ‘kababayans’ (compatriots) in Malaysia who stand to be deported will not be encouraged to seek clemency. Instead, they will be assisted during the process of deportation to ensure that their return to the Philippines will be as smooth as possible. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is one of the agencies that will work to help ensure this, Taguiwalo said. She added that the Chief Executive mentioned in November that the 7,000 undocumented Filipino workers who will be deported will be given access to health care and education. President Duterte has also said that he will appeal

to neutral agencies, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), to help build a hospital for Filipino migrants, and that Filipino medical personnel will be deployed to these health facilities to assist in the provision of services. “For our part, our Protective Services Bureau (PSB), DSWD-Field Office 9 (in Zamboanga) and the DSWD-Field Office in the ARMM (Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) are already in the process of putting together a plan of action to help our ‘kababayans’. We will provide them with assistance that is within the means of the department to ensure that their immediate economic needs are met, she said. The social welfare chief also said that the returning Filipinos will be given food and medical assistance, as well as information on other DSWD services they can utilize as they begin their new lives in the Philippines.

Legarda expects improved disaster preparedness with project NOAH completion MANILA, Jan. 30 (PNA) – Senator Loren Legarda on Monday said that she expects improved preparedness of the government in dealing with disaster risks following the completion of Project NOAH or the Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards. Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committee on Climate Change and Global Champion for Resilience of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), made the statement following an update from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on the status of the Project NOAH. “The DOST said that the Project NOAH has been completed and PAGASA will take over the operations aspect of the delivered outputs. If the Project indeed delivered what it has promised to deliver, then the concerned agencies of government should be ready and able to translate research and information into action with

measurable gains,â€? she said. Legarda, who chairs the Senate Committee on Finance, added the government should ensure that the salaries of all scientists, researchers and personnel who were hired under Project NOAH are paid in full before the project ending date because there are reports that salaries were sometimes delayed by up to five months. According to DOST Secretary Fortunato dela PeĂąa, Project NOAH started in 2011 and most component projects were completed in 2015, but it was extended in 2016 to cover additional targets and deliverables. Meanwhile, the extension until February 28, 2017 is for the transfer of the technologies to relevant government agencies, principally the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). “We are making headway in improving disaster preparedness in the country

and the Project NOAH has been helpful particularly in providing accurate information and timely warnings to our agencies and communities. The completion of the Project should signal better prepared agencies in dealing with disaster risks, said Legarda. Project NOAH is a program that uses science and technology in building capacities for disaster risk reduction and management. A website has been built to enable people to see real time updates and accurate information on weather predictions, flood forecasts, rainwater level and landslide warnings. The Project also features the Disaster Risk Exposure Assessment for Mitigation – Light Detection and Ranging or DREAM-LIDAR Project, which produces accurate flood inundation and 3D hazard maps for the country’s flood-prone and major river systems and watersheds, and also identifies landslide-prone areas.

Steve Harvey redeems himself By Azer N. Parrocha

MANILA, Jan 30 (PNA) – American host Steve Harvey got it right this time. During the 65th Miss Universe coronation show held in the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Pasay City, Harvey reiterated his apologies for his unforgettable gaffe during the previous pageant held December 2015. To recall, he announced that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez instead of Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach was the next Miss Universe. He quickly corrected himself but drew flak from fans from both countries. Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Corazon Teo, however, expressed admiration and congratulated Harvey for doing such a wonderful job in hosting the 65th Miss Universe competition. “Steve truly has a way with words, and he clearly won the heart of the Filipinos. He was apologetic but at the same time humorous,” Teo said. “All is well that ends well. He did just great to make this Miss Universe experience truly a memorable one.” The DOT chief also appreciated the audience for welcoming Harvey’s efforts to redeem himself. “The Filipino audience appreciated his humor, wit and tactfulness on stage,” Teo said. The American host opened the show being apologetic and poking fun at himself. “Let’s get it out of the way, I know what you’re thinking,” he said while eliciting laughter from the crowd. “Is that the guy from

last year? Did they bring back that guy from last year? Well, they did. It’s me, I’m back.” “It’s been a long year getting here. Boy, I paid the price for last year with that mistake. I went and had a little surgery, had some stuff done to my eyes, so when the card comes up we’ll get it right this year.” Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, for her part, did not waste the opportunity to joke around with Harvey while they shared the stage. “Thank you for making me the most popular Miss Universe,” she said. Harvey also faced this

year’s Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar and asked her about his reputation in her country: “I want to just ask this for myself, how do people in Colombia feel about Steve Harvey?” Tovar jokingly replied, “Do you want to know the truth? A lot of people hate you, but you know I love you. That’s the most important.” Before the announcement of the winner, Wurtzbach handed a pair of eyeglasses to Harvey to make sure he reads the right name. After Miss France Iris Mittenaere was crowned Miss Universe 2016, Harvey ended the show with, “I got it right this time.”

US tech industry condemns Pia Wurtzbach to Steve Harvey: Thank you for making me the most popular Miss Universe Trump’s immigration ban MANILA, Jan 30 (Mabuhay) -- Reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach, who is to set to pass her crown to her successor on Monday (Philippine time), thanked American host Steve Harvey for a mistake he made about a year ago. During the opening portion of the Miss Universe coronation, Harvey made it a point to acknowledge the mistake he made in reading the name of the winner during the last pageant held December 2015 where he announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez instead of Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach as the next Miss Universe. Harvey poked fun at his own error: “I know what you’re thinking. Is that the guy from last year? Did they bring back that guy from last year? Well they did. It’s me. It’s been a long year.

Boy I paid the price from last year.” “When you make a mistake, you just gotta keep on moving forward,” he said. The American host later quipped about having “stuff done” to his eyes. “When the name comes up on the card, we’ll get it right this year.” Wurtzbach, who Harvey described as “the pride of the Philippines and embodies everything that the crown stands for” later joined him on stage wearing a hot pink gown. The reigning Miss Universe, who revealed that she signed with IMG (owner of Miss Universe) then shocked Harvey by thanking him for a major blunder he would rather put behind him. “I never really got to thank you. Thank you for making me the most popular

Miss Universe,” Wurtzbach said. Harvey then replied by saying: “Thank you for making me the most famous host of Miss Universe.” Wurtzbach later went on by saying that she was humbled my her experience in Miss Universe and said that it was “about time to put the Philippines back on the world’s stage.” “We’re just waiting to be recognized. Holding it here it’s about time. We have so much beauty, so much to offer,” she added. The opening portion was kicked off with a song numbers from four-time Grammy nominee Flo Rida best known for his songs “In the Ayer”, “Low”, and “Zillionaire.” Each of the 86 candidates made final walks before the top 13 candidates were announced. Trump issues statement defending travel bans MOSCOW, Jan 30 (PNA/ Sputnik) – Calling America a “proud nation of immigrants,” US President Donald Trump defended the immigration restrictions he ordered January 27 and said he would continue “protect our own citizens and border.” “America has always been the land of the free and the home of the brave. We will keep it free and safe, as the media knows but refuses to say,” Trump began his statement, taking aim at his favorite target, the US media. He said while the country would continue to show

“compassion to those fleeing oppression,” it must do so while protecting itself, and that within 90 days, visas would begin being issued for “all countries.” The new president equated his ban on accepting Syrian refugees, his fourmonth suspension of taking refugees from any country, and his ban on admitting nationals of seven Muslim countries to what former President Barack Obama did in 2011, when for six months he stopped issuing visas for refugees from Iraq. Trump also noted that the seven nations his ban affects — Iran, Iraq, Libya,

Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — were identified by the Obama administration as “sources of terror.” “To be clear, this is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting,” Trump said. “This is not about religion — this is about terror and keeping our country safe. There are over 40 different countries worldwide that are majority Muslim that are not affected by this order.” “We will again be issuing visas to all countries once we are sure we have reviewed and implemented the most secure policies over the next 90 days,” he said.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 29 (PNA/PTI) – Silicon Valley’s top executives, including India-born CEOs Google’s Sundar Pichai and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, condemned President Donald Trump’s immigration ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries, voicing concern that the move could directly hit their own staffers and stop bringing great talent to the US. Executives from Microsoft, Google, Apple, Netflix, Tesla, Facebook, Uber and other top American companies slammed Trump’s immigration order that sparked widespread protests across the US. Trump yesterday signed a sweeping executive order to suspend the arrival of refugees and impose tough new controls on travelers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, as part of new measures to “keep radical Islamic terrorists” out of America. Condemning the move, Nadella, in a post on LinkedIn, said “As an immigrant and as a CEO, I’ve both experienced and seen the positive impact that immigration has on our company, for the country, and for the world. We will continue to advocate on this important

topic,” Microsoft President Brad Smith said as many as 76 Microsoft employees are affected by this new executive order. “We appreciate that immigration issues are important to a great many people across Microsoft at a principled and even personal level, regardless of whether they personally are immigrants. Satya has spoken of this importance on many occasions, not just to Microsoft but to himself personally. He has done so publicly as well as in the private meetings that he and I have attended with government leaders,” Smith said. “As a company, Microsoft believes in a strong and balanced high-skilled immigration system,” he said. Pichai also criticized Trump’s controversial immigration order saying it will create “barriers” to bringing great talent to the US. The Internet search giant also ordered its travelling staff to return to America. Pichai in an email to staff said the US ban on foreign nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries will hit nearly 200 Google employees. “It is painful to see the

personal cost of this executive order on our colleagues. We’re upset about the impact of this order and any proposals that could impose restrictions on Googlers and their families, or that could create barriers to bringing great talent to the US,” Pichai said. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was one of the first to address the ban publicly. “We need to keep this country safe, but we should do that by focusing on people who actually pose a threat. Expanding the focus of law enforcement beyond people who are real threats would make all Americans less safe by diverting resources...,” he wrote on Facebook. Zuckerberg called for keeping doors open to refugees and those who need help. “That’s who we are. Had we turned away refugees a few decades ago, Priscilla’s family wouldn’t be here today,” he said. “My great grandparents came from Germany, Austria and Poland. Priscilla’s parents were refugees from China and Vietnam. The United States is a nation of immigrants, and we should be proud of that,” he asserted.

Mediterranean diet can help with mental health issues – Australian study

SYDNEY, Jan. 31 (PNA/ Xinhua) – The Mediterranean diet can provide significant help to those suffering from severe depression, Australian researchers have discovered. Mediterranean diet has long been known to have significant physical health benefits. Now researchers from Melbourne’s Deakin University have discovered that it can also help those suffering mental health issues. The team from Deakin put dozens of patients with major depressive disorders on a Mediterranean-style diet rich in protein, legumes, fresh fruit and vegetables, olive oil and nuts. After 12 weeks of health eating, researchers said that one third of the participants reported a significant improvement in their mood and

symptoms. Felice Jacka, director of Deakin University’s Food and Mood Center, said the Mediterranean diet had previously been credited with improving cardiovascular health, reducing the risk of diabetes and increasing longevity. “We already know that diet has a very potent impact on the biological aspects of our body that affect depression risks,” Jacka told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Tuesday. “The immune system, brain plasticity, and gut microbiota seem to be central not just to our physical health, but also our mental health. “And diet, of course, is the main factor that affects the gut microbiota.” Jacka randomly selected

the participants to embrace the Mediterranean diet and reduce their intake of sweets, refined cereals, fried foods and sugary drinks. Another group of participants received social support with only eight percent of those in the social support group showing improvements in their symptoms. Sarah Keeble, a participant in the diet-switch, described the program as life changing. “I felt clearer in my mind. I felt balanced. I felt happier. I actually had a lot more energy. I felt I could really kick this in the butt,” she said. “It’s not going to cure depression, but you can certainly handle it very well. Keeble said she had continued the diet after finishing the program and is now doing a diploma in health science.

New York Governor proposes adding abortion protection to state law NEW YORK, Jan 31 (PNA/Sputnik) – New York Governor Andrew Cuomo at a rally on Monday proposed a state constitutional amendment to implement abortion protections established by the 1973 US Supreme Court Roe v. Wade case. The proposal comes amid the growing concerns that the soon to be announced nominee for the US Supreme Court may override the abortion protections

nationwide. “Our rights are under attack in Washington and as they seek to limit women’s rights, we in New York seek to protect them,” Governor Cuomo said at “I Stand with Planned Parenthood” rally. “I propose today a constitutional amendment to write Roe v. Wade into the New York State constitution so that nobody can change it.” US President Donald Trump announced earlier in the day that he plans to

nominate his candidate for US Supreme Court justice position on Tuesday at 8 p.m. (Wednesday at 1 a. m. GMT). During his first week in office, Trump issued an executive order to reinstate the Global Gag Order, which prohibits US federal funding for foreign non-governmental organizations that provide abortions. Trump has been known for his harsh pro-life stance and expressed opposition to abortion on demand.

Cancer scaremongers on a roll, but burnt toast probably not carcinogenic MOSCOW, Jan 31 (PNA/ Sputnik) – Scientific studies proving that certain foods, drinks, activities, inanimate objects can cause cancer are recurrent in mainstream media. Most recently, burnt toast and overcooked chips have been branded carcinogenic, but an expert on public risk understanding has told Sputnik such sensationalism could have a detrimental effect their own health. The findings were publicized by the UK Food Standards Agency, as part of its Go for Gold campaign, which called on British citizens to aim for a golden

yellow color when cooking starchy foods in order to minimize their exposure to a chemical called acrylamide. Acrylamide naturally forms in foods such as bread and potatoes when they are fried, baked or roasted. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, classifies acrylamide as a “probable human carcinogen” based on the findings of a 1994 study. The FSA bases its claims on these findings, stating acrylamide “has the potential to cause cancer in humans.” While the FSA’s press

blitz produced alarmist headlines and much anxiety on social media, others are more circumspect. Sir David Spiegelhalter, Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk at Cambridge University, says that while acrylamide is used as an industrial sealant, and workers with very high exposures suffered serious neurotoxicity, “there is no good evidence of harm from humans consuming acrylamide in their diet.” “Cancer Research UK state there is no strong evidence linking acrylamide and cancer, but that’s not for want of trying,” Sir David told Sputnik.

This means that their wedding in Boracay on Tuesday, which was witnessed by

their friends and family, was actually the third time

they tied the knot. “Finally, FIRST day to the public as OFFICIAL Mrs. Valerie and Lloyd Birchmore since yesterday was honestly our 3rd wedding already,” Garcia wrote. Vin Abrenica stakes claim as new romantic leading man for 2017

Vin Abrenica admits that he was both hurt and disappointed when the upcoming romantic comedy-drama “Moonlight Over Baler” did not make it as one of the official entries in the recently concluded Metro Manila Film Festival. “I expected a lot since our director Gil Portes had high hopes that we would get in. After friends texted me about it, all I could say in my reply was ‘Ouch!’,” Vin said during a pocket press conference to promote the film, which is now scheduled to open in cinemas on February 8. The good news is that the 25-year-old actor was impressed with the quality of the entries selected in the MMFF. He said those films have inspired him to con-

tinue working on his craft as he still hopes to someday be part of the coveted Christmas season festival and experience what it’s like to ride a float during the annual parade of stars. With or without the MMFF, Vin’s career has picked up in a big way. Last year saw the strapping young lad leave TV5, the network where he started his career four and a half years ago, and step into the big leagues by joining ABSCBN’s roster of stars. There, he became more visible with frequent guest appearances on drama anthology shows like “Maalaala Mo Kaya” and “Ipaglaban Mo.” In between those shows, he also made his mark on the big screen in a pivotal supporting role

opposite elder brother Aljur in the high-profile historical drama “Ang Hapis at Himagsik ni Hermano Puli.” “I’m more recognized now. People used to know me as Aljur’s brother. Now whenever I do mall shows, people call me by my own name. That’s music to my ears,” he confessed. Things can only get better for Vin as he opens 2017 with not just one but two major movie releases – the sexy action comedy “Extra Service” produced by Star Cinema and “Moonlight Over Baler”. As the title indicates, the film is set mostly in the scenic and historic town of Baler but its story takes place in two eras: the early 1940s and the summer of 1986.

INMENT Liza asked: ‘Will you join Miss Universe?’

Liza Soberano wasn’t jealous at all when her rumored boyfriend, Enrique Gil, attended an official Miss Universe event early this week. Gil was one of the celebrities spotted at the Miss Universe national gift auction at the Conrad Manila hotel on Monday night. Soberano shared that she was supposed to be with Gil that night but she didn’t make it because of a prior work commitment. “I was doing a shoot that time. I was invited as well pero due to my schedule, hindi ako nakapunta. I really wanted to go,” she said. Asked how she finds Gil’s photo with Miss Universe Costa Rica, Soberano said: “He told me right away. ‘Hopie, may picture ako with Miss Costa Rica ha? Ipo-post ko.’ I said, ‘Okay I don’t mind. You don’t have to make paalam or anything. It doesn’t matter to me.’” Soberano said she is glad Gil got to experience attending a Miss Universe event because “it’s something fun to witness.” In fact, Gil enjoyed the event so much that he called Soberano to encourage her to join the pageant in the future. “It was his first time ever. Siyempre Quen is a guy. He is not really into girly girl

things. Natuwa siya and he called me. He said, ‘Why don’t you join?’ I was like, it’s not really my thing,” she said. “It would be an honor to become Miss Philippines and join Miss Universe but I really don’t see myself in that path. It’s not for me. But natutuwa naman ako na people are telling me that I should join and stuff. Nakaka-touch din naman but it’s really not for me,” she added. Meanwhile, Soberano shared that she and Gil already have plans for Valentine’s Day.

“The premiere night [of our movie ‘My Ex and Whys’] is on February 14, Valentine’s Day. That’s my Valentine’s date, not only with Quen but also with our supporters, with the cast and crew of ‘My Ex and Whys,’” she said. As for an actual date, Soberano said she and Gil are really busy for the whole month of February so she will just probably get him a gift. According to Soberano, they are almost done with “My Ex and Whys” and cannot wait for their fans to see it on February 15.(MNS)

She has also gone into acting, playing herself in her life story in “Maalaala Mo Kaya” and acting with other kids in the soap “Hawak Kamay”. “Tatlong Bibe” of Regis Films is her first movie

and she’s glad to be acting with co-ABS-CBN stars Marco Masa of “Nathaniel” and Raikko Mateo of “Honesto”. “Enjoy po kaming tatlo sa shooting ng movie,” she said. “Masaya po kami sa set. Sina Victor Neri at Nikki Valdez po ang mga magulang ko rito.” Lyca is competing once again as one of the child contestants in “Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids”. “Ang huhusay po ng mga kasama ko, like sina Awra Briguela, Ella Nympha at Alonzo Muhlach. Enjoy po kaming lahat.”(MNS)

Is Vice Ganda a bad influence on Awra?

Comedian Vice Ganda responded to criticism that he is influencing 13-year-old child actor Awra Briguela to embrace homosexuality. The two have already starred in the box-office hit “The Super Parental Guardians” and are set to work together again on the upcoming concert “Pusuan Mo Si Vice Ganda Sa Araneta” on Valentine’s Day. At a press conference for his Araneta Coliseum show, the 40-year-old “It’s Showtime” host emphasized that there is no prescribed age for coming out. “Wala kasing edad ‘yon. Walang tamang edad kung kailan ka dapat mag-bakla. Walang tamang edad kung kailan ka dapat puwede nang mag-bakla,” he said in a calm tone.

Vice Ganda

Vice Ganda noted that Briguela actually became much happier when they met. “Pinagbabawalan muna kaming magsama kasi si Awra masyado nang masaya mula nung nagkakilala kami. Hindi na raw maka-iyak. Hindi na makahugot kasi happy na siya,” he said. According to Vice Ganda,

he treats Briguela like a younger sibling and even gives him tips to improve his performances on “Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids.” The “Gandang Gabi Vice” host lamented that many Filipinos still do not fully understand gender and sexuality. “Hindi natin ‘yon nauunawaan kasi kulang pa ‘yong kaalaman ng mga Pilipino dahil nalimitahan tayo ng edukasyon na available sa Pilipinas pati na rin ng mga nakagawian natin—ng mga tradisyon, relihiyon. Maraming factors ‘yan,” he said. “Mahabang usapin ‘yan e. Kailangan mo talagang i-explain sa kanila. Dapat talaga ang Pilipino ay ini-educate,” he added. (MNS)

Xian Lim joins ‘A Love to Last’ Actor Xian Lim is excited to be part of the top-rating series “A Love To Last” starring Ian Veneracion and Bea Alonzo. Lim said the project was offered to him last year. “I was really excited. Matagal na ito, I think this was mentioned to me last year. Last year, they mentioned if I want to be part of ‘A Love To Last,’” he said. In the series, Lim will play the character of Totoy,

childhood friend and admirer of Andeng (Alonzo). “Ang pangalan niya si Totoy at kababata siya ni Andeng at mahal na niya si Andeng bata pa lang, noong college days. Kaso naunahan lang siya ni Jerold (Victor Silayan) but now he’s back and will do everything to win Andeng,” said Lim, who will be working with his idol, Alonzo, for the first time. “I’m a huge fan of ‘One More Chance’ and to be

sharing a screen with her is overwhelming,” he added, referring to Alonzo’s hit movie with John Lloyd Cruz. Asked if he would like to be a regular cast member of the soap and not just a guest star, Lim said: “Why not? I hope so. It’s such a good story. I don’t know exactly how long ‘yung duration ng character ni Totoy, I haven’t seen the final script. But hopefully yeah, why not?”

Duterte wants police scalawags eradicated after Korean’s slay MANILA, Jan. 30 (PNA) – For the second time, President Rodrigo Duterte has turned down the resignation of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Ronaldo ‘Bato’ dela Rosa and instead ordered him to eradicate scalawags and criminals in the police force. Dela Rosa offered anew to quit his post to “protect the image of the PNP” following the abduction and slay of Korean executive Jee Ick Joo right inside the PNP’s headquarters at Camp Crame. ”Bato offered to resign

yesterday. But I declined his retirement because it would not contribute anything,” the President said in a late evening press conference after attending a joint command conference with PNP and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Sunday at the Malacanang Palace. President Duterte said Dela Rosa was one of his trusted men behind his successful fight against criminality and illegal drugs in Davao City where he served as mayor for 23 years before his accession to the presi-

dency. ”I was just facing the reality that nothing good will happen if I will remove him and more reason for us to do more. And the correct way to do it, if I may say so, is to go after the persons who have perpetrated the crime,” the President explained. Due to the Korean kidnap-slay case, President Duterte also ordered Dela Rosa to clean the PNP of corrupt and criminals. ”If there are these scalawags and criminals inside Crame, they will continue

was very open to having a Roadmap and that, since the last agreement was signed 11 years ago, it was time to adopt a new kind of cooperation on paper. Safonov also welcomed the gains of the Duterte Administration in fighting terrorism and crime, particularly in battling the drug menace since Rosturizm is always concerned for the safety of Russian tourists all over the world. He said that President Rodrigo Duterte’s drive against illegal drugs has greatly reduced the drug menace. He also said that the Philippine government was making progress in

counter-terrorism and anticipates even more gains when defense and intelligence cooperation between the Philippines and Russia becomes more robust. Safonov noted that there are some 6,000 Filipino tourist arrivals in Russia in the past year, while Russians even bring their families to go on vacation in the Philippines. Both Ambassador Sorreta and Mr. Safonov agreed that forging an implementation agreement through a Tourism Roadmap is timely given the invitation of President Vladimir Putin to President Duterte to visit Russia, possibly on the first half of 2017.

Basa,” Duterte said. He said US is egging the Philippines to use its victory in the international arbitration court which favored the Philippines’ arbitration case filed against China’s massive claim of South China Sea. “The US is referring it (South China Sea) as international seas. It’s not even closer to what were are claiming that it is ours which is validated by the award,” President Duterte said. President Duterte said he does not want to fight China which the Filipino leader visited in October last year and brought home USD 24 billion loans and investments deals. “China does not like to fight and I made a commitment to President Xi Jinping, I made a solemn commitment that we will talk about this arbitral award during my term. When? I really do not know but during

my term and we will talk hard,” President Duterte said. President Duterte said China has allowed the Philippines to fish in the disputed area. “So everybody happy now. Then we start to dig for oil and other precious metals, whatever titanium or...,” the President said. “I would like to assure the President of China, Xi Jinping, that I will stand by my word,” he added. Few days ago, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana claimed that the US has approved the construction of barracks, warehouses, and runways inside the military camps in the Philippines. The Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) which was signed in 2014 allows the US to deploy US troops, equipment and supplies for maritime security and humanitarian operations in identified military camps in the Philippines.

relatively small universe of people,” the official said. “It s important to keep in mind that no person living or residing overseas has a right to entry to the US,” the official added. Green Card holders from one of the seven affected countries who are currently outside the US will need a case by case waiver to return to America, according to the official. Those Green Card holders in the US will have to meet with a consular officer before leaving the country, the official said. The official said the administration is still working to define what “in transit” means for the purposes of the hardship exemption for refugees who have been approved to enter the US

but are currently in a third country. “The White House is aware of reports that Iran plans reciprocal steps in response to the executive order,” the official said, adding if those measures are indeed reciprocal, it means that the Iranians will review each individual on a case by case basis. Trump s executive orders signed yesterday imposes a five year lobbying ban on administration officials and a lifetime ban on administration officials lobbying for a foreign country. The other executive action calls on military leaders to present a report to the president in 30 days that outlines a strategy for defeating ISIS.

President Duterte said the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) between the Philippines and US prohibit construction of permanent facilities. “A depot by any other name is a depot. It’s a permanent structure to house arms and I do not even know if there is a nuclear tip now that they are unloading because it is not allowed by in our country,” Duterte said. The President warned that he may ultimately abrogate the treaty altogether “since it is an executive order.” President Duterte said the US is unloading arms in the Philippines and it may put the country in “extreme danger” amid the maritime dispute in South China Sea. “The missiles of China are pointed at the American expeditions. Their (US) depot would serve as their supply line. The Philippines will be hit first. They will hit Cagayan, Palawan and

with or without Bato. That’s why you police, you are the most corrupt. You are corrupt to the core. It’s in your system because you are the only one who can go outside,” the President said. ”Given the power to enforce the law and to arrest persons, you’re using it in foolishness because you, not all policemen, it’s about 40 percent of you guys are really used to corruption,” he added. The President tagged Superintendent Rafael Dumlao as the mastermind in the kidnapping and murder of Jee. President Duterte gave Dumlao 24 hours to surrender and even offered PHP5 million bounty for his arrest “dead or alive.” Dela Rosa, who also attended the press conference, approached the President and informed him that Dumlao has just returned at Camp Crame after he reportedly slipped out on Saturday after the police failed to serve an arrest warrant against him. ”He has to be investigated

because of the gravity of the charges. I think Dumlao is insane. How he became lawyer. If I were Dumlao, I’d stay inside the prison. It will be a pity if his wife will become widow and his children will lose their father,” the President said. ”The investigators are telling me that he is indeed who masterminded. It’s a conspiracy actually. So maybe, equal criminal responsibility,” he added. Dumlao has been accused by SPO3 Rickey Sta. Isabel, the main suspect, according to the PNP, as the one who gave orders to kill the Korean businessman. ”Also this SPO3 Sta. Isabel. He is already in heaven (because of his family name) but jump to the hell. How he could have raised PHP20 million in his life. I’m not

trying to derogate his family but I will order to check his lifestyles,” the President said. President Duterte also gave the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) 48 hours to surrender its three assets allegedly linked to the Korean’s slay. The President offered a reward of PHP1 million for each of the NBI agents if they fail to show up, adding failure to surrender would lead to the removal of NBI Director Dante Gierran. ”I just give them maybe 48 hours, and if they cannot be relocated, it would be dereliction of duty on the part of the NBI officials,” he said. The President said a PNP oversight committee will be created to look into the policemen who have been dismissed but fixed their way back to duty.

by Senior Supt. Albert Ferro currently has 330 personnel. Dela Rosa said he is already tired, ashamed and dismayed over the scalawag policemen who were responsible in such a heinous crime which was committed right inside Camp Crame. The South Korean businessman was allegedly abducted in Angeles City, Pampanga and subsequently killed inside Camp Crame on Oct. 18, 2016. Because of this, Dela Rosa immediately dissolved the PNP-AIDG and all the anti-drug units in the regional, provincial, city and station levels nationwide. Likewise, the PNP chief

said he will create a counter-intelligence task force, whose only mandate is to hunt down the police scalawags. Dela Rosa said the counter-intelligence task force will be composed of 100 PNP personnel which will initially operate in Metro Manila and Luzon area. He assured that the “war against police scalawags” will be as intense as the campaign against illegal drugs, after which, the PNP will again continue the “war on drugs”. Dela Rosa said that after the “war against police scalawags”, the “war on drugs” will again continue.

The directive of President Duterte to temporarily stop the PNP’s “war on drugs” was prompted by the kidnapping and killing of South Korean businessman Jee Ick Joo last October, which allegedly perpetrated by the syndicate of “scalawag” policemen led by SPO3 Ricky Sta. Isabel and Supt. Rafael Dumlao III of the PNPAIDG. The PNP-AIDG headed

Earlier, a senior Administration official also pushed back on the notion that the controversial executive order was a Muslim ban. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official listed off several predominantly Muslim countries that the order does not apply to. The official said the US still took in “more foreigners than any other country in the history of civilization” and that the number of people impacted by the executive order was relatively small. “We re dealing with a
