Robredo wins VP race in official tally Manila, Philippines | AFP | Friday 5/27/2016 – The son and namesake of the late Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos has narrowly lost the election for vice president, according to an official count that was only completed Friday, almost three weeks after polls closed. The result dealt a blow to the political aspirations of the family, which had targeted the position for Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jnr as a potential stepping stone to recapturing his late father’s presidential post. Anti-crime firebrand Rodrigo Duterte won the separate May 9 contest for president by landslide, but the closely fought vice presidential race went down the wire, with Marcos losing by around 263,000 votes to political neophyte Leni Robredo. “The elections have been very divisive and we need to rebuild as a nation. He (Duterte) needs everyone’s help in rebuilding our country,” Robredo said over GMA television as the country’s
Aide says Duterte plans to wipe out crime, illegal drugs in PHL in 6 months By Abner T. Galino
President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, arguably the most controversial president ever elected by the Filipino people, is dead set on meeting his self-imposed deadline of six months to wipe out crimes and illegal drugs in the Philippines. This was assured over the week by Dante Jimenez, founding president of Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption(VACC) and believed to be one of the members of Duterte’s “inner circle.” Jimenez made the assurance during a luncheon meeting
with journalists and community leaders in Los Angeles. “He is determined and he means business,” Jimenez said. According to Jimenez, the incoming political administration is aware that Filipinos around the world, whether or not they voted for Duterte, will begin counting up to six months as soon as the former mayor of Davao City takes his oath as President of the Republic of the Philippines. “And that would be from June 30 to December 31,” See 6 MONTHS, page 8

Can’t make ends meet? If expenses exceed income, and creditor calls become harassment calls, you need help. When it’s a choice of food on the table or paying late charges on credit card balances that never seem to get smaller, the thought of bankruptcy is worth considering. Many people still find themselves in this situation. Last year over 2 million people filed for personal bankruptcy. Although it is becoming an increasingly common word, what exactly does bankruptcy mean? Simply put, bankruptcy can be defined as the legal process through which the Federal Government provides people in financial distress with a fresh start. The two kinds of bankruptcy that you may qualify for. They are called Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. There are various factors that would determine eligibility for either Chapter 7 or Chapter 13. Chapter 7 Bankruptcy is a discharge of all unsecured debt. Chapter 13 is for people who may have significant non-exempt assets, and would be required to enter into a whole or partial repayment plan over a five year period. Of course, there are intricate details to this legal process. Who qualifies? Which bankruptcy chapter would apply to you? Is all of your property exempt? There are many questions to resolve before deciding if bankruptcy is for you. Consult a competent bankruptcy attorney to advise you on all the options available in your particular situation. This week’s FAQ’s. Q: Creditors are harassing me – but I lost my job, and cannot pay. How do I stop them calling? A: If you cannot pay your bills, creditors will take steps to collect. That’s natural, but continued harassment can be emotionally depressing. If you have lost your job, or simply cannot cope, because debts have grown to the point where you have to choose who gets paid this month, and who doesn’t, then you need to consider the benefits of filing a bankruptcy. Q: Will a bankruptcy stop collection agencies from calling me? A: Yes, filing a bankruptcy protects you from creditor harassment, and provides peace of mind. Creditors will not contact you if you filed bankruptcy and have an attorney representing you. Otherwise they risk being cited for contempt of federal court, something they will not risk. Another reason to consider a bankruptcy now, even if you do not have assets to protect, is that after a bankruptcy, you can immediately begin the process of repairing your credit. This usually takes between 6 to 12 months, so an early start will get you there faster. Q: I have just received a summons from a creditor. Is it too late to file a bankruptcy? A: No. When you file for bankruptcy, an automatic stay goes into effect immediately stopping any lawsuit filed against you and any action against your property by a creditor, collection agency or government entity. This can be very important, Especially if you are at risk of being evicted or foreclosed on, being found in contempt for failure to pay child support or losing such basic resources as utility services, welfare or unemployment Here is how the bankruptcy filing affects some common emergencies: Utility disconnections. If you’re behind on a utility bill and the company is threatening to disconnect
your water, electric, gas or telephone service, the automatic stay will prevent the disconnection for at least 20 days. Bankruptcy will also discharge the past due debts for utility service. Although the amount of a utility bill itself rarely justifies a bankruptcy filing, preventing electrical service cutoff might be justification enough. Q: Will filing a bankruptcy stop the foreclosure on my home? A:If your home mortgage is being foreclosed on, the automatic stay temporarily stops the proceedings, but the creditor will often be able to proceed with the foreclosure sooner or later. If you are facing foreclosure and wish to save your home, Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the appropriate remedy because it provides for a repayment plan on the arrears. Q: Can a bankruptcy stop an eviction? A: No, under the new rules, a bankruptcy will not stop a court ordered eviction, but it will prevent a landlord from seeking to evict you, at least for a while, perhaps just enough time to find somewhere else to live. However, don’t file for bankruptcy solely because you’re being evicted. You’ll probably be better off looking for a new place to live or fighting the eviction in Municipal court instead. Remember, the main idea behind bankruptcy is to discharge debt. Q: Will bankruptcy protect me; I’m behind in my child support payments? A: If you owe child support or alimony, bankruptcy will not interrupt your obligation to make current payments. And while the automatic stay will temporarily stop proceedings to collect back support you owe, usually the bankruptcy court will permit collection to go forward if the creditor requests it. In any event, these debts will survive bankruptcy intact and will have to be paid once the case is closed. Chapter 13, however, lets you pay the back support as part of the repayment plan. Q: A creditor is garnishing my wages. Will bankruptcy help me? A: Yes. Although no more than 25% of your wages may be taken to satisfy a court judgment (up to 65% for child support and alimony), many people file for bankruptcy to protect their income. For some people, any loss of income is devastating. Your employer may also get angry at the expense and hassle of facilitating a succession of garnishments and take it out on their employees. Although federal law prohibits you from being fired for one garnishment, an employer can fire you for multiple garnishments. Filing for bankruptcy stops garnishments dead in their tracks. Not only will you take home a full salary, but you also can discharge the debt in bankruptcy. So if you have too many debts, and want to know your options, call the Law offices of Paul M. Duterte bares talk with Trudeau DAVAO CITY, May 26 (Mabuhay) – Incoming president Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday disclosed that he talked with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the Canadian kidnap victims of the Abu Sayyaf group and other concerns. In a press conference which started before midnight on Wednesday, Duterte said he and Trudeau had a talk over the phone at around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Manila time. Among the topics they discussed were respect for human rights and the Canadian hostage of the Abu Sayyaf group. Duterte described their conversation as a “civil one.” “We are partners, we remain to be partners for all time. I’m aware there are Filipinos, a lot are working there, some are immigrants and I’m happy they have found protection in your labor laws,” Duterte quoted himself as saying, when asked what he told the Canadian leader. The long-time Davao City mayor said he also apologized that Canadian citizens were kidnapped in the Philippines. One of the two Canadian hostages, John Ridsdel, was beheaded late April after the bandit group’s ransom demand was not met. His head was found April 25 in Jolo, Sulu. “I said I’m very sorry for the incident which resulted in the killing of your national and we will try our very best and see to it that this will not happen again and you can rest assure that when the time comes, we will be
able to apprehend the criminals and exact justice,” Duterte said. The incoming Duterte administration is set to inherit the problems caused by the Abu Sayyaf Group, which has intensified its kidnapping activities. The beheaded Ridsdel was abducted with fellow Canadian Robert Hall, Norwegian resort manager Kjartan Sekkingstad, and Filipina Marites Flor while on vacation on Samal Island in September 2015. In the latest video released by Abu Sayyaf, Hall is seen appealing to Duterte to save him and fellow hostages. He asked Duterte to work for their release immediately as they were “three-quarters dead.” The Abu Sayyaf had threatened to behead one of four captives if the 300 million pesos ($6.4 million) ransom for each of them was not paid. The initial demand was one billion pesos each for the detainees. The Philippine government adheres to a “no ransom policy,” although it is widely believed that captives are only freed by the group after a ransom, euphemistically called “board and lodging fee,” has been paid. China has no reclamation works in Scarborough Shoal: Aquino By Jelly F. Musico
MANILA, May 26 (PNA) – President Benigno Aquino III on Thursday said China is not doing reclamation in the Scarborough Shoal, also known as Panatag Shoal and Bajo de Masinloc, which is only 120 nautical miles from Zambales. ”Well, there are no reclamation works being done by China on Scarborough Shoal,” President Aquino said in a media interview after the launching of the Balog-Balog Multipurpose Project in Barangay Sula, San Jose, Tarlac. Aquino said the Philippine government is taking two-track approach to prevent possible attempt by China to extend its massive reclamation in the disputed West Philippine Sea up to the Scarborough Shoal which is “clearly within the 200-mile exclusive
economic zone” of the Philippines. ”I am sure you know we have taken two tracks: One, is to work with ASEAN, and, of course, is arbitration and we are awaiting the decision,” he said. The President said the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China have agreed in 2002 to the Declaration of Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea which states: “The parties undertake to exercise self-restraint in the conduct of activities that would complicate or escalate disputes and affect peace and stability including among others refraining from action of inhabiting on the presently uninhabited islands, reefs, shoals, cays and other features and to handle their differences in a constructive manner.”

DepEd urges schools not to require expensive school supplies MANILA, May 26 (PNA) – The Department of Education (DepEd) is urging all public schools to refrain from requiring expensive school supplies for students as classes begin on June 13. The DepEd made the call together with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) during the special monitoring activity for school supplies in bookstores around Recto Avenue, Manila on Tuesday. DepEd Assistant Secretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs Atty. Tonisito M.C. Umali called on the administrators of public schools to refrain from prescribing any branded or expensive school supplies which
contribute to budgetary constraints of parents, especially those with children studying in public schools. “Makakaasa po kayo na ang ating mga pampublikong paaralan ay hindi mag-oobliga ng mga mamahaling school supplies. (Rest assured that our public schools will not require expensive school supplies) No specific type or brand of school supplies will be required,” said Umali. “Maski po yung mga lumang kwaderno na spiral na may sobrang pahina na hindi nagamit noong nakaraang taon ay pwedeng pagsama-samahin at tahiin (All the unused pages of old notebooks in the previous school year can still be compiled and sewn together),” he added.
The DepEd official recommended the “Gabay sa Pamimili ng School Supplies” released by the DTI to properly guide consumers in their purchase of school supplies. The link is posted on the official website and social media accounts of DepEd. The special monitoring activity for school supplies was spearheaded by the DTI, together with representatives from DepEd, Department of Health-Food and Drug Administration (DOH-FDA), Local Government Unit-Manila and Senator Bam Aquino. The monitoring team reported stable and reasonable prices of school supplies. (PNA)

Three other towns in the province of Rizal are among the next highest in the headcount with Cainta (332,000), Taytay (319,000) and Binangonan (282,000). Santa Maria in Bulacan ranks fifth with a population of 256,000. Calabarzon cities like Antipolo also in Rizal province ranks the thickest populated urban center with
776,000 people. Dasmariñas City (659,000) and Bacoor City (601,000) of Cavite province rank next in the country’s most inhabited cities. The PSA conducted its mid-decade 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN) pursuant to Republic Act 10625 or the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013 and Executive Order No. 352 which authorizes the statistics agency to undertake population survey including the barangays for government planning purposes. Results of the 2015 POPCEN and other statistical data and census information are available at the PSA website at www.psa.gov.ph. (PNA)

Duterte will not allow construction of more factories CALABARZON still tops country’s most populous region in Metro Manila
MANILA, May 26 (Mabuhay) – Incoming president Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday said he will not allow the construction of more factories in Metro Manila. “Manila is already saturated. I will not allow factories anymore in Manila,” he said in a press conference. “Not only because it is a dead city but because I have to build a new environment for the people,” he added. The tough-talking president has earlier spoken of his intention to devolve power and distribute wealth from Manila to the other regions in the country. “I have to relocate them, pero bago marelocate, I have to establish an economic acticity. Mag-economic zone na lang ako, tapos ilagay ko sila doon,” Duterte said. (MNS)

Duterte warns De Lima: ‘Don’t fight me; you’ll lose’ DAVAO CITY, May 26 (Mabuhay) – The word war between presumptive President-elect Rodrigo Duterte and Senator-elect Leila de Lima is far from over. In an early morning press conference here on Thursday, the incoming President said he would launch an investigation on De Lima for her supposedly slow response in busting the illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison. Duterte said that it took the former Justice Secretary seven months to start doing anything about his tip on the proliferation of methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) inside the national penitentiary. “I will dig deep. Sabihin ko sa kanya, ‘Hoy, hija. Huwag mo akong masyadong pakialaman sa bunganga ko (I will tell her, ‘Woman, don’t focus on how I say things’). You better look in your own backyard because you have a very serious problem there. Shabu is being cooked there inside the penitentiary. It took her seven months to enter the premises, the tough-talking mayor said. It turns out that the rift between
Duterte and De Lima goes a long way. In 2014, Duterte testified in the Senate and threatened to kill alleged rice smuggler Davidson Bangayan. “Shabu [inside the Bilibid] started during her time! Siya ang magbantay sa akin (And she will censor me)? I called her attention when she criticized me after I testified in the Senate on rice smuggling. Nag-mura ako doon (I cursed there)‌ She issued a statement. Instead of zeroing in on the real culprit, na yung Intsik, ako ang idedemanda niya (she will sue me) for threatening,â€? he said. In various instances, the former Justice secretary said that she would act as a fiscalizer in the Duterte administration. She said that she would watch out for Duterte, who supposedly emboldened local officials with his “anti-human rights policies.â€? De Lima also expressed concern about Dutertes pronouncements that he would give dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos a hero’s burial, pardon former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and reinstate the death penalty.
Aquino defends self from ‘lack of empathy’ criticism he showed ‘empathy’ to the suffering victims of super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in November 2013 and of the Zamboanga siege. In Tacloban City, the President said he and the local government unit (LGUs) officials and fellow national government leaders visited the evacuation centers to assure the people of the government’s assistance three days after the typhoon ravaged Eastern Visayas. Nagkulang ba ako sa pag-unawa kung ano ang kondisyon nila, kung ano ang agam-agam nila?, he asked. Described as the strongest typhoon to make landfall, Yolanda left over 6,400 people dead and 1.9 million people homeless in Eastern Visayas. During the Zamboanga siege in September 2013, President Aquino said he went to Zamboanga despite appeal from his security advisers not to proceed due to heavy fighting between the military troops and the 200 rebels from the Moro National Liberation Front.

MANILA, May 26 (PNA) – President Benigno Aquino III on Thursday expressed confusion why some of his critics described him as leader who is lacking empathy to the suffering Filipino people. You know I looked for definition of empathy because, actually, I cannot understand if that criticism has basis, President Aquino said in a media interview during the launching of the Balog-Balog-Multipurpose Project in San Jose, Tarlac. From Wikipedia, the President said “empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another being is experiencing from within the other being’s frame of reference, i.e., the capacity to place oneself in another’s position. He also cited definition of empathy from Merriam-Webster which states: “The feeling that you understand and share another person’s experience and emotions. The ability to share someone [else’s feelings]. To probe his critics wrong, President Aquino cited two events where

Comelec defers action on Marcos request for system audit MANILA, May 25 (Mabuhay) – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc decided to defer action on the request of Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong Marcos Jr. that his team’s IT “experts and programmers be allowed to audit the servers used in the May 9 elections. Poll chief Andres Bautista told reporters on Wednesday that the decision was unanimous for several reasons, including the fact that canvassing of votes for president and vice president is already starting at Congress. “Meron ring agam-agam dahil nagsimula na ang pag-canvass ng ating Kongreso, the Senate and the House of Representatives, at alam rin naman natin na ang kapangyar-
ihang magproklama ng presidente at bise presidente ay ibinibigay ng Saligang Batas sa Kongreso. So ano ang magiging epekto kung hahayaan nating magkaroon ng audit na ganito na ginagawa ng isang kandidato? Bautista asked. Marcos asked the poll body last week for the system audit due to doubts that sprung from the “introduction of a new script to the transparency server, which reflected partial and unofficial results. The senator’s camp claimed that the script change was suspicious because his lead of about one million votes from administration bet Leni Robredo “began to erode after the tweak.

Seniors seek relief from $80k and $28k credit cards. Client is 52, still young by any standard. He has got it all together. He has no credit card debt or bank debt. He doesn’t own a house but owns a mobile home that he lives in with a fair market value of $45K. He’s pretty happy living in the camper because he can drive it anywhere he wants to when he feels like it. Last week he spent a week in Yosemite enjoying fresh air and nature’s beauty. The week before that, he spent a couple of days hunting rabbits in Arizona with his camper in tow. He still works as a commissioned salesman when he feels like working, grossing about $30K a year. He has a beautiful fiancÊe who loves him for who he is since he doesn’t really have much in his name in this world. So what kinds of financial problem can someone like this have? He made the mistake of acting as a guarantor on a commercial lease for his friend. His friend owns a business, which requires commercial space. The lease on the space is $20K monthly. It’s a five-year lease with three more years to go. His friend’s business was doing well until recently. You know how businesses go. You make money, breakeven or lose money. The first situation is the best. The second situation give you a fighting chance, after all, no money are being lost because the business is able to pay for all of its expenses. But the last situation sucks. Unless you have deep pockets, losing $10K a month means losing $60K in six months. You know what I mean. This deficit has to be financed by new capital from stockholders or from bank loans. Since you know its losing money,
you don’t want your own money at risk, so you apply for bank loans to transfer the risk to the banks. You tell the banks that the situation will change if this happens or that happens. But nothing happens; you just continue to lose money. When push comes to shove, and you see the writing on the wall, you might decide that its time to call it quits and shut down the business. Client is thinking that friend’s business is facing some headwinds that may eventually force his friend to shut it down. If the business is shut down, the commercial lease won’t be paid and guess who is holding the bag for the next three year’s lease of $720K? Fortunately for client he qualifies for a Chapter 7 wipe out of the $720K commercial lease guaranty. He will keep all his assets, including his mobile home, and his 2015 MB E 320. With this $720K liability out of the way and out of his life, client can become productive again, a beneficiary of the Chapter 7 fresh start. I understand that he plans to start a new life with his beautiful bride as soon as the court discharges his $720K personal guaranty liability. This potential liability for a quarter of a million dollars is what hounds client from the time he wakes up to the end of the day, every day. Now what kind of life is that when you have to worry about getting sued for $720K just because you signed a
lousy guaranty to help your friend out? Not the good kind. It’s a bad kind of life and pretty soon, you have to decide if you want to face this problem squarely and get rid of it so you can get back to enjoying your life. God, the one True God, Yahweh, the God of Moses and Israel, of Abraham and Jacob, my God, who sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins, because He loved us so, did not mean for us to live life under the burden of so much debt! Jesus said that He came that we may have life and have life more abundantly! And when I say Jesus Christ, I refer to the one and only Son of the one True God, I mean Jesus Christ, who is true God of true God, consubstantial with the Father, begotten, not made. Jesus, who came down from heaven, humbled Himself and became man, conceived by the Holy Spirit without human intervention, in the womb of our Blessed Mother Mary, to die for our sins on the cross, so we can have a chance to spend eternity with our God, the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and our loved ones, in paradise. I refer to our Lord and Savior, our redeemer, our shepherd, the prince of peace, the king of kings, the way, the truth and I will discuss the cases of the seniors in the next article. “Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned‌â€? Bongbong’s dilemma It is going to be a very tall order for Senator Bongbong Marcos to win the Vice Presidency. On top of Robredo, he has to contend with Senators Koko Pimentel Jr, and Alan Peter Cayetano, as well as with Danding Cojuangco Jr of San Miguel Brewery and the entire and influential Aquino-Cojuangco clan of the Hacienda Luisita, headed by soon to be ex-president Noynoy Aquino. All of these personalities have conspired or worked hard against the possible election of Bongbong Marcos as the next vice president. Both Pimentel and Cayetano are now eyeing not only the senate presidency but a possible run to be the next Philippine president. With Marcos out of the loop, it would be easy for either Pimentel or Cayetano to defeat Robredo in case she decides to run for president in 2022. As everybody knows, Danding will never let go of his San Miguel Corporation, which he apparently acquired through his friendship with the late strongman President Ferdinand Marcos. If Bongbong Marcos wins, there is no way of stopping him to be the next president in 2022. It is possible that he may forcibly take back San Miguel from Danding. And I know that once Marcos becomes president, I am 100 percent sure that the Cojuangco-owned Hacienda Luisita will eventually be land reformed by the government. As of Wednesday, Congresswoman Leni Robredo is still ahead of Bongbong based on the official canvass of votes for the vice presidency on the first day of the joint congressional National Board of Canvass (NBOC). Yes, Robredo is leading the vice presidential race through the help of the Liberal Party’s “dagdag-bawas” scheme and with the cooperation of Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista. I cannot just yet say that Robredo – a reluctant candidate – was involved in the cheating. I have a high regard for her honesty although I do not know her personally. But most of the people believed that Robredo has benefitted from “dagdag-bawas” since she has always been in the tail end in the surveys among the vice presidential candidates, even a week before election day. Therefore, there might be some truth to the allegations made by the Camp of Senator Marcos regarding massive cheating in large areas of Mindanao. People are now coming out in the open and ready to testify about how they were prevented from voting and saw how LP supporters shaving the votes of Marcos in favor of Robredo. One witness even claimed that he has a video to show to the public the “wholesale” vote-shaving in favor of Robredo in his province of Basilan. I hope Comelec Chairman Bautista will find time to seriously look into this matter.

I just came back (Monday, May 23) here in Orange country from a month-long vacation the Philippines. I arrived in the Philippines two weeks before the May 9 election and most of the people I talked with at the airport and in shopping malls
were all rooting for a Duterte/Marcos tandem. They said it was already a done deal. They claimed that there was no way for “Bongbong” to be defeated since the “solid north” will catapult him to victory. Also, they said the “Iglesia Ni Kristo” has endorsed Marcos, in addition to the Jesus Is Lord (JIL) movement and other religious sects. I was surprised that I was the only one in our family that did not believe that Marcos will make it. I told them that it is Robredo who is going to make it, but did not explain the reason why. When the results of the voting were coming in shortly after 9 p.m., I was shocked to find out that Marcos was way ahead of everybody, particularly in Metro Manila. Everybody in the family was laughing and
making fun of me. I told myself, I could be wrong after all. Before I slept on the evening of May 9 at 11 pm. Marcos was ahead of Robredo by more than 1 million votes. Robredo has already overtaken Escudero and Cayetano and was on second place. The following day, at 6 a.m., my relatives woke me up and told me that Robredo was indeed ahead of Marcos by more than 65,000 votes. I was not surprised at all. I knew it will come. I even told my fellow journalists at the Manila Bulletin and at the National Press Club where I had drinks with my former colleagues. While some disagreed with me about a possible scenario of a Robredo victory. A day after the election, a lot of my friends called to congratulate me for being right in my prediction. I even won P10,000 for betting for a Robredo victory. I used the money I have won to buy my sister a new refrigerator. People were shocked and could not believe that Marcos lost to someone who is not even known to voters outside of the Bicol area. Someone who has not been seen on the television or newspapers, appearing or

participating in plenary debates, or delivering privilege speeches or sponsoring bills to uplift the lives of Filipinos, or how to combat the proliferation of drugs in the country. She was even labeled by some of her colleagues as a member of the “silent majority” in the lower house. What they meant they were the lawmakers who do nothing during sessions except to attend, listen and vote and collect they salaries, perks and payolas. Yes, Robredo will win because that is what President Aquino and the Liberal Party want. Noynoy and his allies found it impossible to overcome the huge lead of Duterte over Roxas so they shifted their “dagdag bawas” scheme to Robredo. Do I like Robredo to be the next Vice President of the Philippines” My answer is “No.” There is no question about her honesty and dedication to serve her constituents in Naga Camarines Sur. I think she did a remarkable job as as a Congresswoman in her district. But I dont think she is prepared to tackle a job bigger that want she was doing as a “silent” Congresswoman representing Naga city or the Camarines Sur province.

While some agencies may be abolished, Jimenez disclosed that the preparatory team might create new agencies – particularly one that would monitor and supervise law enforcement organizations and agencies in their crime-fighting efforts. The incoming administration, Jimenez added, will definitely ask Congress to reimpose the death penalty to complement its campaign against crimes. Curfew for minors is not an empty threat, Jimenez said, but will become a reality for the entire country once the Duterte administration begins. When Duterte accepted the challenge and the presidential campaign began, Jimenez was supposedly tasked to organize support groups in the Bicol region where he comes from. OC Chamber’s featured entrepreneurs reveal ‘Key to Success’
“Success books” are a dime a dozen and practically shows every possible way on the route to take for one to be successful in life. All of these books list vital attributes one should have to be able to achieve their goals. While some have yet to get the good fortune of combining the right mix to stay ahead of their competition many had been fortunate to find the ingredients to be successful in their endeavors. An author had summed secret, four in all, to achieve success. Of all the goals that people set in life, success in two areas clearly stand out – those that pertain to their personal lives and those on their professional lives. These two goals are interdependent and supportive of one another. Personal success supports and reinforces personal success. Together, these two pursuits reinforce happiness which is life’s most important pursuit. How is this achieved? By putting, according to the author, “the law of attraction at work and cultivating the power of positive thoughts which will act as a magnet to bring in things your way and help in identifying and externalizing internal strengths and capabilities”. By putting good things in mind and determine the passion that matches the inner strengths and capabilities one will be able to position himself strategically. One must find his own “element”, the passion– the right field of study, the right occupation, sport or activity that matches his inner strengths and capabilities — which h might or might not even know he possesses. Being at the right place at the right time often makes a big difference especially when this is coupled with the willingness to try and try again and learning to endure failure. “There are plenty of opportunities to go around and one just needs to be there when his turn comes up”. While some call the phenomenon as simply “luck” which the author says “cannot be controlled but one which can
move from a game with bad odds to one with better odds”. The important thing is to persevere and stay in the game. The fourth secret is being able to set priorities right, use resources wisely, stay focused, develop the right relations and not be complacent. The Secrets to Success Event in Orange County had many of the realities come to light courtesy of successful entrepreneurs from the entertainment and culinary fields last April at the Muzeo who shared their “secrets”. The Filipino American Chamber of Commerce of Orange County brought these exemplary personages to share to their audience at the signature event things that contributed to where they are now. The sharers include: Giovanni Ortega (Actor, Author and Director) has been working professionally since 2004 and believes “in creating and accepting and inclusive relationship with artists and communities alike regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation and class”. He is the author of ALLOS, the story of Carlos Bulosan commissioned by East West Theater. Linda Young (Entrepreneur), has an “inborn entrepreneurial spirit that prompted her to start a gift basket company called Tailored Baskets in 2000”. Remembering NVM Gonzalez, the Philippines National Artist for Literature There’s a saying that goes: “you will know a dynamic person when you meet one,” and that was certainly what impressed me when I met Professor NVM Gonzalez at the Faculty Center of the University of the Philippines. Caregivers are entitled to overtime compensation under new California law In our aging society, the need for skilled caregivers is ever-increasing. Providing the best possible care often means working long hours. In the past, many caregivers did not qualify for overtime compensation because they were considered exempt from overtime as “personal attendants.” However, on January 1, 2014, California enacted the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, which provides that “personal attendants,” including most caregivers working in private households (with limited exceptions), must receive overtime pay for all hours worked in excess of nine per day or forty-five per week. Many caregivers are not aware
that they are now entitled to overtime compensation. It is vital that caregivers know and understand their rights under this new law. For example, oftentimes caregivers are improperly paid a daily flat rate of $50.00-$120.00 per day for providing 24-hour care. If you are working as a caregiver and paid a flat daily or monthly sal-
ary you are not receiving overtime pay. Under the new law, a caregiver working a 24-hour shift must be paid at $315.00 per day. If an employer fails to pay overtime, the resulting liability can be extensive. Employees that are not properly compensated for overtime hours are not only entitled to receive their unpaid overtime wages, but are also entitled to interest, penalties, attorneys’ fees and costs. Here are a few things that caregivers should know about overtime in California: - With some exceptions, caregivers must be paid one and one half times their regular rate of pay for all hours
Chinese envoy lauds Duterte’s willingness to improve future bilateral ties By Filane Mikee Z. Cervantes
MANILA, May 25 (PNA) – Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua on Wednesday approved of incoming president Rodrigo Duterte’s intention to improve the strained Sino-Philippine relations through possible bilateral talks over the South China Sea row. “We’re glad that the president-elect has already opened the option for direct bilateral negotiation talks and we welcome that. It has always been China’s policy to settle our disputes and differences through bilateral channels,” Zhao told reporters on the sidelines of the handover ceremony of donations at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City. ”We are looking forward to work with the incoming president and his team to explore the possibility of returning to bilateral talks over disputes we have,” he added. China has been firm with its policy
to resort to bilateral negotiations in resolving border disputes. The Chinese diplomat noted that the president-elect also has the same stance when it comes to “properly” handling the issue of South China Sea. This involves a peaceful dialogue with no confrontation, he noted. Zhao expressed confidence in the upcoming administration to alleviate tensions and improve relations between China and the Philippines, as he acclaimed Duterte for being a man of principles. “My impression is that the president-elect is a very strong man, a man with principle, and the type of leadership that you would like to work with to improve our bilateral relationship,” said the ambassador. Manila-Beijing ties have been somewhat muddled due to maritime disputes with a pending arbitration case the Philippines brought to the United Nations Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague, Nether-
lands in 2013 against China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea. The ruling is expected soon. Duterte earlier said that he will consider holding direct talks with China if the multilateral approach remains stalled after two years. Commenting on this two-year time frame, Zhao said that 2 years is too long and quoted Chairman Mao Zedong to “seize the moment, seize the hour.” (PNA)
worked in excess of nine per day or forty-five per week. - Caregivers that are paid a salary are not exempt from overtime laws. - Caregivers need to be compensated for overnight care in most circumstances. Caregivers work hard to care for our loved ones and, like all employees in California, they must be paid in accordance with California law. Given these recent changes caregivers should consult with a knowledgeable employment law attorney with experience handing wage and hour matters to ensure that they are being properly compensated for their work. Duterte hits 3 ‘most corrupt’ government agencies DAVAO CITY, May 24 (Mabuhay) – Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday night gave dire warnings to supposedly corrupt and inefficient government agencies and officials. Speaking to reporters in Davao City, Duterte called the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), Bureau of Customs (BOC) and Land Transportation Office (LTO) as the “most corrupt” agencies. Duterte also said it may be better to simply disband these agencies. “I’m very sorry pero sabihin ko sa inyo, isa sa pinaka-corrupt na agency ang BIR, Customs, LTO—iyang tatlong iyan... I-abolish ko na lang para wala na,” he said. Duterte also lambasted the “useless” Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), saying that it cannot
combat illegal drugs because many of its own officials are embroiled in the narcotics trade. He added that a high-ranking PDEA officer needs to be sacked from the agency because of alleged connivance with drug syndicates. Duterte said that once he assumes office, he will order the military to take over the corruption-riddled agency. Aside from the PDEA, Duterte also wants military men to lead the Bureau of Immigration (BI), and the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), which maintains the New Bilibid Prison (NBP). He also warned local government officials involved with illegal drugs. “Huwag kayong magkamali d’yan kung naaawa kayo sa sarili n’yo. P***** *** mamamatay kayo d’yan.” (MNS)
Kim Henares hurt by allegations of corruption at BIR MANILA, May 24 (Mabuhay) – Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Jacinto Henares on Tuesday is hurt by allegations of corruption at the BIR agency, following reports that incoming President Rodrigo Duterte may abolish the bureau due to corrupt staff. “Nasasaktan ho ako para sa mga tao ko, sa BIR, kasi anim na taon ho silang nagtrabaho nang mabuti.... Naiangat din namin, nila, ang estado ng bansang ito.... Hindi narerecognize efforts nila,” Henares said. Duterte was reported to have
said he would abolish the BIR, Bureau of Customs, and the Land Transportation Office (LTO) once he steps in as President due to rampant corruption in these agencies. “Perception niya ‘yun eh.... Bakit mag-aaway sa perception....” Henares said. Henares also said that it would be up to Duterte to decide on what to do once he takes office. “Siya naman ho ang President, pwede niya namang gawin ano ang gusto niyang gawin.... Bahala siya anong gusto niyang gawin.... Wala naman hong problema,” she said.

WARNING: Homeowners struggling with mortgage payments now have limited time to apply for government loan modification Are you currently struggling with high mortgage payments? Did you get your loan modified in the past but now have a new hardship based on changed circumstances? If so, this is an important article that you MUST read. If you’re one of the many people who got approved for loan modification many years ago under the HAMP Program, chances are that you obtained a low interest rate of 2% for 5 years and then your interest rate is set to increase after that time period. Other homeowners either did not qualify under HAMP and so were given by their lender an in-house modification with less favorable terms or the interest rate given by their lender under HAMP was much higher than 2% from the start. Studies show a high percentage of default even after modification. From what I’ve seen personally, these defaults could have been for a number of reasons: (a) the homeowner’s changed financial circumstances after modification (b) the homeowner decided that he or she still couldn’t afford the modified payments after all although income has remained the same and (c) the homeowner was never interested in keeping the home on a long term basis to begin with and simply wanted a loan modification “to buy more time” to stay in their home. Again, these have been my personal observations only- there could be other reasons. But for those who have remained current since their modification, they are now facing a new challenge as they approach the fifth year of their modification. Unless their income has increased in the last 5 years, there’s a good chance that they will not be able to afford the higher payments after the 5-year period under HAMP. So unless they can keep their payments the same, they may be back in the same position as they were before they obtained a loan modification 5 years ago and be at risk for foreclosure again. NOT GOOD. This is the reason why a lot of people are looking
into doing a loan modification again. The BAD NEWS is that you now have a very limited time to apply because the government program ends this year 2016 unless extended again, which I highly doubt. DO NOT MISS THIS IMPORTANT DEADLINE if you think you will benefit from a loan modification by helping you get current if you have fallen behind on payments, reduce your interest rate, which of course, will result in a much lower monthly payment than what you currently have. If you have an interest-only loan, read your loan agreement to find out when your payments will adjust because there’s a good chance that when it does adjust, it will be an amount that is significantly higher than what you are paying right now. I find that most people are in for a shock when they find out what the higher payment will be! Don’t let this happen to you. Of course, this program is not for everyone. Whether or not you should apply for loan modification again will, of course, depend on your intentions and long-term plans with regard to your home. Again, the HAMP Program ends this year 2016 and you may miss out on this opportunity unless you act now. If you need help in figuring out your options regarding your mortgage, my office can help. Comelec, Smartmatic staff sued over script change MANILA, May 24 (Mabuhay) – A party-list representative on Tuesday sued officials of technology provider Smartmatic-Total Information Management and employees of the Commission on Elections over the alleged tampering of the automated election system (AES) used in the May 9 national elections. In a complaint filed with the Manila Prosecutor’s Office, Abakada-Guro party-list Rep. Jonathan dela Cruz accused the respondents of committing a security breach in the AES, particularly in the script of the transparency server, “compromising the integrity and credibility of the 2016 elections, in addition to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of computer data and system.” Dela Cruz said the Smartmatic officers’ actions were in violation of Sections 4(a)(1), (3), and (4) of Republic Act No. 10175, which required the Smartmatic to inform and secure an authorization from Comelec en banc for any modification in the script to be used in the server. Named respondents were Smartmatic technical support team head
Marlon Garcia, Smartmatic project director Elie Moreno, technical support team member Neil Banigued, Mauricio Herrera, Comelec information technology officer Rouie Penalba, and Comelec employees Nelson Herrera and Frances Mae Gonzalez. The supposed “security breach” that the complainant was referring to was when Smartmatic made an adjustment to the script to fix an issue involving the “Ñ” character being replaced by “?”. After learning that the data package in the script contained a special character “?” in the name of the candidate, Garcia said they made the necessary “cosmetic change” on the script to correct the error. Garcia had said that there was no longer any need to notify the Comelec chairman and commissioners about the modification he made, saying: “There are just certain matters that need to be escalated to en banc.” Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon, however, said that the Smartamtic should have notified the poll body about the modification made in the script of the transparency server.

Is real estate property purchased prior to marriage considered community property in a divorce? Generally, in California, property acquired by a spouse prior to marriage is considered separate property under family code section 770 while those acquired after marriage are considered community assets under family code section 760. How do you characterize real property purchased prior to marriage but with the mortgage principal paid down using community income or funds during the marriage? The community in this situation acquires a pro tanto interest in the ratio that the payments on the purchase price made with community funds bear to the total payments on the purchase price and any appreciation should be apportioned accordingly. Marriage of Moore (1980) 28 C3d 366,371, 373, 168 CR 662, 664, 665. Other expenses associated with the property are not considered in the calculation such as mortgage interest, taxes, and insurance. In essence, the real property would accumulate both a separate property and a community property component by the date of separation. The appropriate remedy in this situation where separate property is subsequently paid with community funds is “apportionment.” The process of apportioning between the separate and community property component is laid out in the Marriage of Madsen. In that case, the court determined the ratio or percentage in which the mortgage loan principal was reduced during
the marriage and applied that percentage to the appreciation of the real property during the marriage. The community property component would then consist of the reduction in the mortgage loan principal during the marriage plus the portion of appreciation during the marriage applying the ratio discussed above. In the Marriage of Madsen, the real property was purchased by the husband for $38,300 mprior to the marriage. The original mortgage was $30,000. By the time the husband got married, the house was now worth $65,000 while the mortgage has gone down by $7,000. Both the appreciation of $26,700 and the mortgage reduction of $7,000 would be separate property since it occurred prior to marriage. Marriage of Madsen (1982) 130 CA3d 426,181 CR 910. During the marriage until the time of trial, the property has appreciated another $117,500 (property now valued at $182,500) while the mortgage has further declined by $9,200 up to the date of separation. The ratio at which community funds paid down the mortgage ($9,200) during the marriage to the original
purchase price ($38,300) amounts to 24.02%. This percentage of the property appreciation during the marriage of $117,500 ($28,223.50) plus the reduction in mortgage balance during the marriage ($9,200) would constitute the community component of the real property. The rest was the husband’s separate property. The husband in that case was awarded his separate property component of the real property plus one half of the community property component. The Madsen apportionment method is also applicable to situations where a community real property is later transmuted into one spouse’s separate property through execution of a quit claim by the other spouse but is subsequently paid using community funds. Marriage of Broderick (1989) 209 CA3d 489, 257 CR 397. Since California case law allows the creation of a community interest in real property acquired prior to marriage, one has to consider vehicles to protect themselves if you own property and you are contemplating of getting married. There are several ways of avoiding the creation of a community interest on your separate real property. One, you can sign a prenuptial agreement. Two, the parties can execute a postnuptial agreement if the parties are already married. Three, the parties can execute a transmutation agreement
with a waiver of any family code section 2640 reimbursement claim. If your divorce case involves complex issues of asset distribution, it is best to retain the representation of competent counsel. Pinay attempts to use fake passport to bring adopted child to PHL MANILA, May 27 (Mabuhay) – Officials from the Philippine Consulate in Dubai stopped a Filipina from returning to the Philippines after she tried to use a fake passport for her adopted child. According to a report of Khaleej Times, the Filipina’s husband allegedly bought the bogus passport in the Philippines for P75,000 (Dh5,900). Consul Ferdinand Flores said the Filipina was unable to apply for a genuine Philippine passport as the whereabouts of the baby’s biological parents were unknown. Flores said the biological mother was an illegal resident in Dubai who left the child with the foster mother a year ago. The foster mother claimed to have tried but failed to contact the biological mother by phone. Flores said no case was filed
against the foster mom but insists the consulate does not condone her actions. The Khaleej report quoted Flores as saying, “fortunately they went first to the consulate before they traveled lest they be held up in the immigration and the mother will be possibly charged with human trafficking.” The child remains with the foster mom. Meanwhile, a report on Gulf News said an overseas Filipino worker used a fake passport as a guarantee to obtain a company loan. He reportedly even tapped his coworkers as guarantors before running away with the money. Another case involved a Filipina who used a fake passport, fake immigration stamps, and even a fake Dubai visa. In the report, Flores said all cases have been reported to the police and are under investigation.
He said they exposed the modus operandi of those using fake pass-
ports to serve as an eye-opener for Filipinos. (MNS)

Duterte wants frugal, simple inauguration; short inaugural speech By Lilian C. Mellejor
DAVAO CITY, May 25 (PNA) – With 36 days left to the inauguration of a new president, incoming President Rodrigo Duterte admitted people are prodding him to practice presidential protocol for his June 30 oath-taking. He however said he refused, saying, “I already told them ituro niyo lang sa akin saan ako magtindig (point to me where I should stand).” Duterte has been telling his inaugural team to prepare only a simple inauguration suggesting that serving finger foods for the guests will do. Under the law, the oath-taking of the president should take place 12 noon. The president will have a choice where to deliver his inaugural address after. He said he plans to fly only to Manila on June 30 before the 12noon oath-taking then fly back to Davao. “Kung delayed ang flight di walang oath-taking (If the flight is delayed then there is no oath-taking),” he said drawing laughter from the reporters. After the oath-taking, Duterte said he would go on national television. Duterte, who usually spends time talking on media interviews, rallies and conversations with friend, said it would only take him five minutes to spell-out his governance and let each member of the Cabinet detail the program later. What is important is action, he said. In holding office, Duterte said he wants to spend more in Davao and for the papers needing his signature could be done here. “Pwede naman siguro yun (Maybe this can be done),” he said in jest. For attire, Duterte, who dons maong pants to go with his barong, said he is looking for a barong made of cotton because he does not like fabrics that are itchy. Sources close to the mayor revealed a tailor has already designed a barong embroidered with a design unique to Davao. Presidential moniker The past days have netizens including the media guessing for the presidential monicker of Duterte. Some say PRRD for President Rodrigo Roa Duterte; PRody for President Rody – the more formal nickname of the mayor; PDigong for President Digong – the casual nickname of the mayor used by Davaoeños; and just Digong (pronounced Dī-góng not dee-góng). Others say Mayor President. “Just call me Mayor,” said Duterte admitting that he feels awkward being called President. I am just a worker in government I just want that…to impress upon your state of mind and there is no reason to give too much adulation, he added. “I do not want that kind of rapport with the Filipino people. I also discouraged that kind of culto culto na Duterte it does not also fit into my paradigm in life. Sanay ako sa trabaho ko (I am used to my job). I have been with government (and spent) the best years of my life about two years from graduation from law school. “I have always been a servant…in fact you are a master,” said Duterte, who was a state prosecutor, once a member of the Tanodbayan, OIC-vice mayor during the time of former President Corazon Aquino before he became the elected mayor of Davao City in 1988.

After 115 years, long lost San Pedro bell finally back home By Vicente B. Alhambra Jr.
BAUANG, La Union, May 23 (PNA) – After 115 years since it was taken by American soldiers in 1901 during the Filipino-American War, the San Pedro bell of the Saints Peter and Paul Church here was finally reinstalled Monday after it was returned back to the Philippines from its location at West Point Military Academy in New York, USA. “After more than a century, we are so glad that we now have the opportunity to once again hear the call of San Pedro to our church services,” said Fr. Ronald Chan, the parish priest, in his remarks during the unveiling and ceremonial rites. The bell was installed in front the church, left side of the main door. Most Reverend Rodolfo Beltran, Bishop of the Diocese of San Fernando, La Union, officiated the mass during the ceremonial rites attended by representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Manila, U.S. war veterans, the West Point Association of the Philippines, parishioners, local officials and residents. “I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the U.S. military for the return of the bell, the voice of God,” said Beltran, who made the ceremonial ringing of the bell after it was unveiled in its old location. Bauang Mayor Martin De Guzman thanked all those who facilitated the return of the bell especially retired U.S. Navy Captain Dennis Wright who discovered the existence of the bell through research work. “This (bell) is very important to us. It is our long lost treasure. The return of the bell would strengthen our faith and further unite us here in our town,” De Guzman said. The bell was transported from the West Point Community in New York, USA on April 30 and arrived in the Philippines, at Clark Pampanga, on May 17. Before the bell’s shipment, a ceremony and mass at West Point’s Most Holy Trinity Catholic Chapel were conducted attended by Philippine consulate officials and repre-
sentatives of the United States government. For his part, Capt. Dennis Wright said he first learned of the bell’s existence three years ago through research work to effect the return of the Ballangiga bells. “It was through this research that we learned of another bell (San Pedro) from the Philippines that was located at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point New York. We learned that it was taken in 1901. However, the circumstances surrounding the removal of the bell and its journey to the U.S. remain lost in history,” Wright said. Wright said that he, along with a group of American veterans, rediscovered the bell and found out that it belonged to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul here. The veterans then worked with Fr. Chan and Mayor De Guzman to formally request for the bell to be returned to the church. In January 26, 2016, Lt. General Robert Caslen Jr., the 59th Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy, honored the request and agreed to return the bell as a gesture of goodwill and in recognition of America’s enduring friendship with the Philippines. It was learned that the bell was taken by American soldiers under General Thomas Barry in 1901, during the Philippine-American war. He (Barry) gave it to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, which hung it outside the academy’s chapel. Historical records show that in 1883, Gobernadorcillo Mariano Balancio, who became Mayor of Bauang, and Lt. DD. Hilario Calica, gave the bell to Father Mariano Garcia, who was then parish priest of San Pedro from November 1872 to July 25, 1876. The bell was almost destroyed during the Philippine revolution but the advance of American forces prevented it and other bells in the Philippines from being melted down and made into guns and other war ammunition. The bell is made from alloy of gold silver and copper.(PNA)
De Lima: Panelo too controversial, flamboyant to be presidential spokesperson MANILA, May 25 (Mabuhay) – Senator-elect Leila de Lima on Wednesday called Salvador Panelo too controversial to become the presidential spokesman of incoming president Rodrigo Duterte. “No offense to Attorney Panelo, kilala ko naman yang si Attorney Panelo kung hindi ako nagkakamali fellow Bicolano yan si Attorney Panelo, but he is too controversial and flamboyant to be a spokesperson,” De Lima said. De Lima added that Panelo may not a wise choice and would only add to the controversy of her already-controversial client. “I don’t know if that is a wise choice for a presidential spokesperson, too colorful. Makikipagkompitensya siya sa pagiging colorful ng kanyang principal. Pareho na silang controversial nun,” she said. Panelo was involved in several high-profile legal tussles in his career, such as defending
the Ampatuan family in the infamous Maguindanao massacre, detained Sen. Ramon Bong Revilla in his plunder case, and the Marcoses in the family’s alleged ill-gotten wealth. Panelo already shrugged off criticisms over his lawyering for the Ampatuans since his future appointment provides no conflict of interest. Panelo’s selfie with former president and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during her 69th birthday also went viral. The National Press Club of the Philippines urged Duterte on May 18 to reconsider Panelo’s role in the cabinet since they would find it hard to interact and work with him as press secretary. Meanwhile, Duterte said on Tuesday that Panelo will only serve temporarily before he finds a permanent spokesperson among his circle of friends.
Apple supplier replaces 60,000 employees with robots MOSCOW, May 26 (PNA/Sputnik) – The Foxconn Technology Group (Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.), an Apple Inc. supplier, has replaced 60,000 factory employees with robots, the MarketWatch reports citing Chinese media. All of the workers are from the same factory and their layoff is part of a massive reduction in China’s Jiangsu province, where around 600 companies are reportedly mulling
replacing employees with robots, the MarketWatch said on Wednesday. Foxconn, as well as 34 other companies, spent 4 billion yuan (USD610 million) on artificial intelligence last year, according to local government officials cited by South China Morning Post last week. According to the MarketWatch, Foxconn has been criticized for inadequate working conditions for years. (PNA/Sputnik)

Zanjoe opens up about rumors linking Bea to John Lloyd Zanjoe Marudo insists that he was not affected when rumors came out romantically linking his former girlfriend, Bea Alonzo, to John Lloyd Cruz. Marudo said he thinks he is not in the position to speak about the matter. “Actually kilala ko naman sila. Wala naman akong issue about doon. Wala naman akong puwedeng sabihin, totoo man or hindi. Asked if he has already moved on from their failed relationship, the actor said: “Hindi ko alam. Paano ba malalaman kung naka-move on? Pero happy ako ngayon kung anong nangyayari sa akin. Happy ako ngayon sa buhay ko. Iyon ang importante doon.” Marudo also insisted that he is not dating anyone right now. (MNS)
Piolo on playing lighter roles: Sumasabay lang Piolo Pascual denied that he is intentionally avoiding heavy drama in his movie choices. In his recent movie “The Breakup Playlist,” Pascual played a musician, while in his upcoming film “Love Me Tomorrow,” he plays a DJ. “I guess ito lang siguro ‘yung nabibigay na concept. We do so much drama on TV anyway so sa movies, siguro mas maganda na mas light para may iba namang flavor,” he said. Although his roles in the two movies seem similar, Pascual said the team behind “Love Me Tomorrow” made sure viewers would immediately see the differences between the two characters. “We had to make sure na ibang iba siya as a character. It’s also important that you’re working with your mother studio na alam kung paano i-track ‘yung mga roles na gagawin mo para ma-differentiate din, para hindi ‘yun at ‘yun lang. But hindi naman sinasadya na luma-light,” he said.
Piolo Pascual
Besides, Pascual thinks moviegoers these days prefer light dramas. “Siguro it’s a sign na ngayon mas gusto ng mga tao na mas light ang napapanood nila so sumasabay lang tayo. Umaayon lang,” he said. Aside from Pascual, “Love Me Tomorrow” also stars Dawn Zulueta and Coleen Garcia. Directed by Gino M. Santos, the movie will open in theaters nationwide on May 25. (MNS)
Julia Barretto reconciles with dad Dennis Padilla Julia Barretto has patched things up with her father, actor Dennis Padilla. The rift between father and daughter started when Barretto, whose real name is Julia Frances Baldivia (Padilla’s real surname), wanted to legally drop her last name. In an interview, Barretto said she has ironed things out with her father even before they were spotted working out together at a gym last month. “Actually ‘yung gym na ‘yun super surprise. I knew that he goes to that gym and I go to that gym pero iba-iba ‘yung schedules namin so never kami nagkakatagpo. Nagulat ako, ‘Papa!’
It just happened. But we talked. We’ve been talking even before meeting. It wasn’t like we patched things up there. We patched things up even before that incident,” she clarified. Barretto said she is glad that things are now starting to be okay again between them little by little. “As a daughter, it makes me really happy because at the end of the day, he’s still my dad. No matter what, gusto ko sa huli okay kami, walang hard feelings,” she said. Asked about the reaction of her mother Marjorie Barretto, she said: “My mom is happy naman wherever I’m happy, my siblings are happy.
Why Robin feels responsible for Mariel’s miscarriage “Kasalanan ko iyon kasi ayaw ko,” actor-host Robin Padilla said as he admitted that he felt responsible for the first miscarriage of his wife, “It’s Showtime” mainstay Mariel Rodriguez. According to Padilla, he rejected suggestions from experts to have Rodriguez undergo the “painful” heparim regimen in an attempt to prevent a pregnancy loss. His wife later suffered two miscarriages, one in March last year and another six months later. The heparim regimen, as described by a popular American science magazine, is prescribed to pregnant women who have a high risk of developing serious complications from blood clots. The 2014 article noted, however, that the regimen “does not appear to lower the risk of blood clots or miscarriage during pregnancy.” It may also cause bruising and result in minor bleeding involving the nose, gums, or vagina. Rodriguez first announced her third pregnancy on an episode of “It’s Showtime” last Saturday. (MNS)

Use your veterans benefit to buy a home now For the past years, it’s been a little difficult for Veterans and FHA buyers to compete with cash buyers and buyers with a much larger down payment. Realtors are not educating their sellers enough into understanding how the VA or FHA loans actually can benefit a home buyer. Sometimes, it’s not just about the bottom line, Realtors with VA or FHA buyers sometimes have to submit a brief description of their first time home buyers to the sellers. in order for the sellers to understand and welcome these minimum down payment buyers. But with the market changing a little for the benefit of these buyers, the cash buyers are slowly diminishing and sellers are more welcoming to all kinds of offers. Now is a very good time for servicemembers to refinance or purchase a home. With mortgage rates continuing to hover at all-time lows and many homes selling at significantly discounted prices, it’s possible for those with ok credit and income to purchase a great home. One of the unique benefits afforded to military personnel is access to the Veterans Affairs Home Mortgage Loan program. This program offers tremendous mortgage benefits to active-duty servicemembers, veterans, and some surviving spouses. A VA home loan can be used for a number of purposes, including purchasing ,refinancing a current mortgage, repairing or improving your existing home. While a conventional loan might seem like a great bargain because of an advertised lower rate, keep in mind that you often need a high credit score of 720 or above to qualify for these best rates. VA home loans are backed by the government,
meaning banks can assume less risk with the loan and possibly price it lower than a rate you would qualify for from a bank. But even without a lower rate, there are a number of other compelling benefits that make the VA home loan program a better overall alternative. Program Benefits The VA program won’t deny a loan based solely on a low credit score, and most lenders don’t tier interest rates for better scores. The VA program usually looks at only the previous 12 months of credit history, unless bankruptcy, a tax lien or a collections situation factors into your situation. The VA home mortgage loan doesn’t require a down payment. This can save consumers up to 20 percent of the loan value when compared to a conventional loan. Borrowers can often refinance to a lower rate within the VA program without re-qualifying for the program through the VA Streamline Refinance Loan. If the borrower has a service-related disability, they may qualify for the lender to waive the funding fee, further reducing closing costs. Now, there are a lot of options to have the lender pay for your closing cost by getting a slight bump in your mortgage rates, which is well worth it. Starting the Process You can begin the application
process at any lender that offers a VA home loan. At some point, you’ll be required to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility( DD214) . This document will verify that you’re qualified for the program and outline your benefits level. Potential borrowers can go online to https://vip.vba.va.gov to apply for the program and obtain their COE. Once you have determined your eligibility, you can move forward with the home buying process. This generally involves finding a VA-approved lender (if you haven’t already), pre-qualifying for a loan, choosing a home, having it appraised, and then closing on the loan and property. Mortgage Tips Be sure to review your credit report before you begin the process to correct any errors. Your lender will use this to make a decision about your eligibility and interest rate, so be sure that you put your best foot forward. You can request a free copy by calling me at 562-508-7048 . You should also check your credit score so you know what range you fall into before you speak with a lender.
With interest rates at all-time lows, it makes sense to consider all your options. Those servicemembers who will be in a home for a short period of time might want to consider an adjustable rate mortgage to keep payments as low as possible. For those who have extra disposable income, plan to stay in their home for a long time, and can afford a slightly higher monthly payment; it makes sense to look at a 15-year fixed term loan. This will help you pay off your loan faster and save money on total interest paid on the loan. It also makes sense to get pre-approved on your loan amount so that you know what range of house you can afford. This will save an immeasurable amount of time and stress in your home search. It will also provide you with credibility when dealing with sellers who know you are pre-approved at that dollar amount. Thanks for your inquiry about government loans, please call Ken Go at 1st Innovative Finance Group at 562-508-7048 or write to Kennethgo@verizon.net BRE-01021223 NMLS #238636.

Hyundai Veloster is one of KBB.com’s ‘10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000’ for 2016 FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., May 19, 2016 – The 2016 Hyundai Veloster was named one of the “10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000” by Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com. The trusted car experts recognized the vehicle for its unique styling and fun driving dynamics. “With one door on the driver’s side and two doors on the other side, the Veloster is among the most uniquely configured cars on the road,” said Jack R. Best used cars now available in the market for less By Jon Linkov Consumer Reports
Not everyone enjoys poring over usedcar classified ads to find that hidden gem. Even our experts find the hunt through bad cars to be the worst part of the buying experience. An easier solution: Simply determine your budget and choose a vehicle from our lists of the best used cars. We dug through years of test data and hundreds of thousands of survey responses, and cross-referenced those metrics with the availability of electronic stability control, a lifesaving safety feature. The best of the best used car models can be accessed at consumerreports.org.. Each model performed well in our road tests when it was new and had above-average reliability for the model years shown. In addition, each vehicle offered ESC as a standard or optional feature. We also included a list of used cars you should avoid considering because they proved to be particularly troublesome and unreliable. Of course, even for used cars we recommend, there can be stinkers – due to a bad day at the factory or a former owner who didn’t care much for car maintenance. Before you buy, make sure to pay for a thorough inspection by a certified mechanic, so there are no surprises down the road. But there is a much better way of buying a used vehicle. And all you have to do is get down to Cars 911, where all used vehicle have been checked and re-cheked before they even go to the lot. Fo a hassle-free car-buying for a used vehicle, call Cars 911 now. Cars 911 is one of the leading car dealerships that specializes in pre-owned vehicles. loster so compelling is that it mixes that standout style with surprising practicality and affordability.” Two longstanding criteria, funto-drive and fun-to-own, are factors that determine which 2016 model-year vehicles make the list. Each vehicle also needs to be available for $18,000 or less. “The Veloster does an outstanding job of combining cool, fun-todrive, unique styling and advanced technologies, all while delivering value” said, Mike O’Brien, vice president, corporate and product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “We will continue to place emphasis on designing vehicles that meet the hearts and minds of our customers.” Veloster experienced sales gains during April 2016, up 69 percent, compared to the same time last year. The lineup offers convenience, safety and performance for 2016, with continuing appeal for the new Veloster Turbo. Both Veloster and Veloster Turbo models feature cutting-edge powertrain technologies like direct injection. Veloster appeals to youthful customers by combining excellent fuel economy, spirited per-

AMG C63 Cabriolet: Open-air AMG performance for the C-Class Affalterbach, March 23, 2016 – The new MY2017 AMG C63 Cabriolet combines an intensive open-air ambience with the AMG V8 Nash Ledesma engine to create an exhilarating performance experience. The Biturbo engine developed in Affalterbach by AMG is available in two output ratings, with 469 hp or 503 hp. Flared wheel arches at the front and rear, the wide track and large wheels underscore powerful exterior looks. Agile longitudinal and lateral dynamics come courtesy of the sophisticated AMG RIDE CONTROL sport suspension with adaptive damping adjustment, rear-axle limited-slip differential and dynamic engine mounts (on the AMG C63 S). Performance-oriented AMG enthusiasts can enjoy the largest selection in the market segment with the Mercedes-AMG C-Class, available in the U.S. as Sedan, Coupe and Cabriolet by Fall 2016 with a V6 Biturbo engine and all-wheel drive

with the C43, or the C63 and C63 S model with a V8 Biturbo engine in two output ratings. “The C-Class is a decisive factor in our company’s success. The new combination of intensive open-air ambience and powerful V8 engine is unique in the segment and perfectly supplements our large C-Class range,” says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. Extensive know-how from motorsport and the passion of the AMG engineers, designers and product managers form the basis for an emotional driving experience with the new Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet. It will be celebrating its world premiere on March 23, 2016 at the New York International Auto Show. The AMG C63 Cabriolet will be on sale at US dealerships by fall of 2016. Unique offering in the segment with V8 Biturbo engine
The C63 Cabriolet is exceptional in every respect, being the only vehicle in the segment to boast an 8-cylinder Biturbo engine. Mercedes-AMG thus meets the wishes of those customers who desire a combination of a highly emotional, unmistakable engine sound and torquey power delivery. The driver also benefits from the unrivalled performance: the C63 S Cabriolet accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and on to a top speed of 174 mph (electronically lim-

2016 Mitsubishi Outlander named KBB. Com most affordable three-row vehicles
The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander, recognized for having over 100 improvements as compared to the 2015 model-year, has been rated third in Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com list of 10 Most Affordable Three-Row Vehicles of 2016. Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com editors highlight the 10 new 2016 model-year affordable vehicles that can seat seven or eight passengers, perfect for families on a budget. The list features six minivans and four SUVs, with prices ranging from $23,000 to the $30,000. “We set a new value standard for the brand when we launched the 2016 Outlander last year, and to see it is recognized by such an informative and trusted source in the automotive industry confirms that Mitsubishi is making a name for itself in the SUV/CUV segment,” said Don Swearingen, Chief Operating Officer, MMNA. “Our objective was to provide consumers with a reliable, value-oriented vehicle that offers them the technology, safety and utility today’s families require; this shows we are doing just that.” If you have been desiring to own a new Mitsubishi vehicle, come down to Puente Hills Mitsubishi and check out our kababayan Alex Jacinto.
