Local area marketing. Talk to us about yo
This year has been a bit different... to say the least. As restrictions ease, it’s been wonderful to get back out into our community, but we do it knowing that things could change at any moment. When the lockdown came to Queensland, we recognised the impact it would have on our community, so we decided to drop everything to do what we could to assist. We focused on supporting local businesses and using our reach to let our readers know how they could safely support these businesses. During the lockdown, we opened our social media pages to promote the unique services and products that our local businesses were offering. We also launched our new website www.lovingnundah.com.au - and included free listings for over 150 local businesses. We had great support from our readers - and from our local business owners - and there was a real sense that we were all in this together. It kept us going to know that there are so many people out there who share our passion for supporting local. We're so grateful to have our print magazine back in action. With many local newspapers going 'digital' (disappearing), our job is now more important than ever. We're the only dedicated
print publication in this area of Brisbane. Print isn't all that we do - we also have a digital audience on social media, website and our eNewsletter subscribers. Our print magazine has always had a wonderful response from people and the businesses who use us to reach out to the community. We can barely keep our stands full when the magazine comes out! This year has been a struggle for many but when you read this issue of Loving Nundah, we hope you’re reminded of all the things we can celebrate about our fantastic community. Our goal - in every edition - is to connect people in our community and to encourage you to get out there. We want you to know your local cafe and business owners, the person who cuts your hair, and the person who helps you with that home improvement job. We need to look after each other now, more than ever. We've spent the last 7 years producing positive content about our local area - and we can't wait to share more of your stories, news and updates. Here's to supporting local and looking out for each other.

Nundah Family Dentists Cameron Chau and Mark Smith opened their dental practice in Nundah in December 2004. After 15 years as Cameron Chau Mark Smith Dentists, they have undergone an exciting refresh and rebrand as Nundah Family Dentists. "This new name, Nundah Family Dentists, felt right for the style of practice we have become," says Cameron. Their new website will launch soon, which will offer convenient online bookings. "Although we've changed name, the practice is still privately owned and operated by Cameron and me and we have the same great staff," says Mark. "As owners and dentists, we've been able to provide continuity of care for our patients, with many we first met back in 2004 still coming to see us.” Cameron and Mark understand that visiting the dentist can be an anxious time for many people. It makes a real difference when they can see the same dentist they feel comfortable with, who knows their history. "Our patients feel comfortable with us as we've been settled in the Nundah area for over 15 years," says Cameron. "We love having our practice in Nundah and enjoy helping our clients overcome their anxiety so they can enjoy a pain-free and healthy smile." Mark and Cameron have taken additional steps to protect the health and safety of patients and staff during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
“It is important to maintain your oral health, so if you have a concern or dental emergency, please call. We have extra hygiene measures in place on top of our usual high standards,” says Mark. Nundah Family Dentists 1220 Sandgate Road, Nundah Ph: 3256 8056 | www.nundahdentist.com.au

Working from Home Tax Claims The Australian Tax office recognises that, due to COVID-19, a significant number of employees and business owners started working from home and consequently incurred additional running expenses in relation to their income-producing activities. In response, the ATO introduced a shortcut method allowing individuals to claim 80c per hour worked from home. This is only for the period from 1 March 2020 to 30 September 2020 (2020 and 2021 financial years).
This rate is ‘all-inclusive’, meaning it covers all of your expenses such as phone, internet and electricity. If you use this method, you are unable to claim any other expenses for working from home for the above-mentioned time period. You must keep a record of the number of hours you have worked from home. Examples of suitable records include timesheet entries, your roster, a diary or documents that show the hours you worked from home.
If you need any assistance with your 2020 tax return obligations, please contact us at mail@dfkhn.com.au. DFK Hirn Newey | 1143 Sandgate Road, Nundah | Ph: 3266 1488

Calf Pain in Runners
Is now the right time to sell?
While gyms were closed, a number of people took up running, doing couch to 5km programs or completing virtual marathons to escape the indoors.
This is a question a lot of people are asking me right now.
If you’re new to running, or if you have increased your running, you may be experiencing something that is all too common - calf pain. Do your calf (lower leg) muscles ALWAYS feel tight and uncomfortable? Despite all of your stretching, do you STILL feel like your calves are stopping you from achieving your time or distance? If any of this sounds familiar, try this test to measure your calf length: 1. Stand facing a wall with your heel on the ground. Bend your knee forward, over your toes and touch the wall with your knee, without lifting your heel. 2. Measure the distance from your big toe to the wall. Around 10-12 cm is normal, so in this case, it’s likely that stretching isn’t going to help with your ongoing calf woes. The solution usually lies in looking more closely at your running program and building some capacity in your calves. Adjustments to your program can help with the pain and improve your performance. The Joint | 9/1220 Sandgate Rd, Nundah and 1/62 Crockford St, Northgate 3191 4455 | www.thejointnundah.com | /thejointnundah
Finding out the best time to sell may depend on the economy and the real estate market. Aside from that, you need to factor in your circumstances. Here is a list of questions you need to ask yourself: 1. Do you need to sell immediately, even if the market conditions are variable? 2. Do you sell first and buy later, or vice-versa? 3. Are there any other factors that could influence the sale, for example, timing, family situation, employment? Knowing these things can help you take the best course of action, depending on your needs and priorities. After all, only YOU can really determine when it's the RIGHT time to sell! Vision and Digital Devices
Group Training – Is it for me?
Most of us have been spending more time on digital devices over the last few months. Here are some tips to help you and your child's vision:
The simple answer: of course. It’s for everyone.
• Go outside – spending 1.5 hours per day outdoors (not on screens) has been shown to decrease the risk of developing myopia when younger (short-sightedness).
• M otivation. We hold each other accountable. If you’ve ever hit the snooze button, bailed on a class last minute, or found yourself otherwise waning in self motivation, join a group training facility and make use of the group motivation and collective accountability.
• Limit screen time – spending more than 2 hours/day on screens has been shown to increase the risk of developing myopia. • Take a break – try the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away to a distance of 20 feet for at least 20 seconds. • Good lighting – avoid using digital devices in dim or dark light as it creates eye strain. • Good posture – the optimal distance for any close task is no closer than a forearm’s length from the eyes. Regular vision and eye health checks will enable us to go through these points with you based on your individual needs, and to assess whether your visual system is working as well as it can. Eyecare Plus Nundah – Optometrist I 1190 Sandgate Road, Nundah Ph: 3266 6444 | www.eyecareplus.com.au/nundah
Here are a few things you may not know about group training:
• Structure. When you’re working out, having a consistent or well-structured plan in place is a must to see results. If you’ve ever walked into a gym and thought, "Now what?", then group training is for you. Trust that someone more qualified and experienced has spent hours putting a program together that will get you results. • Fun. Exposure to a fun and social environment is why many people prefer group training to a lone gym session. Think of the occasional dance breaks, social chats, group events and laughter! This helps with point one – motivation. If you’re struggling to get back into it after COVID-19 closures or during the colder months, group fitness may just be what you need. Northside Dental Solutions Providing cost-effective and judgement-free dentistry has made a local Hendra dentist popular among locals, and in the greater Brisbane area. Northside Dental Solutions was opened by Principal Dentist, Dr Trent Davidson, to break down barriers to dental care in Brisbane.
“The main barriers to health care are cost and fear,” says Dr Trent. “People often delay a visit to the dentist because of the uncertainty about how much it will cost. People may also be afraid of the dentist due to a bad experience in the past or they fear being judged about the state of their heath.”
At Northside Dental Solutions they focus on relieving dental anxiety and working collaboratively with those who fear going to the dentist. “For those who are concerned about the cost of treatment, we offer a transparent, fixed pricing structure. We are the first practice on the north side of Brisbane to publish our treatment prices online and all costs are outlined before any treatment begins.” To keep up with the demand, the Northside Dental Solutions team has grown, with a third dentist, Dr Pat, joining Dr Trent and Dr Helen. “Our team looks forward to providing all Brisbane residents with great, affordable dental care,” says Dr Trent.

The Mary MacKillop College Community
Northgate Ward Update
There’s been a lot happening lately. A worldwide virus. Online schooling. Isolation. Closed borders. Cancellations. Through it all, the community of Mary MacKillop College has remained determined not just to survive, but to thrive. The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted Mary MacKillop College to adopt a thoroughly MMC (Mary MacKillop Coronavirus) approach. It has seven key pillars – MMCare, MMClasses, MMConnection, MMCollaboration, MMCommunication, MMCo-curriculum and MMCommunity. We’ve had a conversation with every family, adapted teaching to ensure continuity of high-quality learning, provided meals for people within and beyond the college, found new ways to engage and stretch our learners, and supported families hit hard by job loss and hardship. As the pandemic evolves, Mary MacKillop College is thriving on a renewed commitment to education for justice, creating community, seeing opportunity in the everyday, and ensuring the joy of life shines through, even in times of great challenge.
As your local Councillor, I have a very strong focus on the future of our area, how we plan for inevitable changes, and how we ensure that the Brisbane of tomorrow is even better than the Brisbane of today. This year’s budget is framed in the most challenging economic environment in a generation. While the current crisis meant some tough decisions were made, I am pleased to be able to share with you some of the great projects I have been able to secure as part of Council’s 2020-21 Budget. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated essential workers who continue to support Brisbane during these difficult times.

Hows and Melton Rds, Nundah Intersection Upgrade A number of residents have mentioned the challenges at the intersection of Hows and Melton Roads, Nundah. This project has been on my list of priorities for sometime. I have been advocating on behalf of residents and working to achieve the best outcome for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. I am pleased to have secured funding in this budget to install a roundabout at this difficult intersection. The upgrade aims to improve safety and congestion. I will keep residents up to date as the project progresses. COVID-19: Support for Brisbane Businesses In response to COVID-19, Brisbane City Council is taking action to help rebuild Brisbane’s economy under our Economic Recovery Taskforce. The Taskforce will bolster and rebuild Brisbane’s economy in the wake of coronavirus. You can find a list of initiatives on Council’s Business in Brisbane website. Council is working hard to ensure Brisbane is Australia’s most small business-friendly city with more support in the suburbs. Suburban Shopfront Activation is a pilot program that encourages property owners with vacant premises in the suburbs to provide opportunities for temporary use by emerging businesses. We are also putting out a call to emerging businesses that are interested in occupying a temporary space.
Did you know that Council has a dedicated 24/7 Business Hotline? 133 BNE (133 263) is a one-stop-shop for businesses seeking information on Council services. Business Liaison Officers are also available for one-on-one sessions to talk about available resources. It’s more important than ever to show our Brisbane business community that they’re not alone. While we continue to be based in Nundah and be a prominent stakeholder in that area, we know that our clients are from a wider area than that and that we are also a part of the fabric of Brisbane’s northern suburbs. Our links with local, state and federal Governments, organisations and entities reinforce that. As Northside Connect Inc, we will continue to be a strong and distinctive voice for the interests of our local and broader community. Management and staffing of Northside Connect Inc will remain the same and we will continue to deliver services via our 3 program areas: • The Domestic Violence and Family Support Program • The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre • The Brisbane North Community Legal Service. Northside Connect looks forward to formally launching our new name on the 1st September. We will have further information about this available closer to the date.

COVID-19 and the Law By Eugene H White, Principal Solicitor March 2020 saw the sudden impact of the Coronavirus on Queenslanders and the massive changes it brought in our lives. The most immediate impact was seen in the rules on social distancing, restrictions on local travel, and the closure of many businesses not seen as 'essential'. Information on these often rapidly changing regulations were found in the media and sometimes not clear.
It has been a stressful time for most of the community, with many working from home, schooling at home, and generally unable to physically see loved ones. Nevertheless, it is important for there to be community compliance and public acceptance of the measures in place. One only needs to look at several foreign countries to see how easily the virus can spread and cause numerous deaths. So, while Australian governments have made mistakes, they have moved flexibly to correct them and our public health situation in Queensland is the envy of many. As we enter Stage 3 and the lifting of restrictions, it is important to remember the published rules (which will include ongoing social distancing ones) do have the force of law and breaches will often constitute criminal offences. However, one also has rights from new legislation.
The Brisbane North Community Legal Service has rapidly adapted to provide legal assistance electronically. As such we have seen spikes in certain areas of law related to COVID-19, such as domestic violence and family law, neighbourhood disputes, consumer arguments (especially over recovering payments for cancelled events), and residential tenancies. There have been frustrations as courts and tribunals closed, but these are now reopening. If you need advice on the legal changes over COVID-19 as it has impacted on you, please call us on 3260 6820 or our state peak organisation, Community Legal Centres – Queensland on 3392 0092 or https://communitylegalqld.org.au/ for alternative centres for free advice.
