We have completed new construction and renovation projects for all the California higher education systems including the University of California, California State University, and California Community Colleges. We have also completed projects for the University of the Pacific.

Kristopher Maddox brings 19 years of experience. Much of his career has been focused on renovations for public and federal clients with a focus on ADA improvements and code compliance. His in-depth experience with building systems, codes, DSA, State Fire Marshal and other approval agencies gives him an excellent understanding of review procedures and scheduling requirements for public projects.
Kristopher’s collaborative approach to project management is centered on LEAN Design and Construction principles. As the project gatekeeper, Kristopher’s focus will be ensuring that all design efforts reflect program requirements while keeping strict controls on budget and project schedule.
Kristopher brings a passion for integrating sustainable design solutions into each project and understands which choices provide the greatest benefit while staying within budget.

Kristina Gwinn is an LPAS Principal and brings 21 years of experience in architecture and interior design, working on a wide variety of project types including educational facilities, commercial/corporate interiors, and multifamily housing. Kristina also has extensive technical background in BIM.

University of the Pacific ELMSN Classroom and Lab Renovation
This Design-Build project will support the establishment of the Masters of Science Nursing Program For the University of the Pacific School of Health in Sacramento. The new program is supported with a new entrance, classrooms, gender neutral restrooms, debrief and conference rooms, along with the essential clinical skills and simulation Labs. This curriculum requires highly technical AV integration. This AV integration facilitates campus-based and online curriculum delivery which is essential in today’s learning environments.
The nursing program is new to the campus. The University was able to retrofit an underutilized space for the program. A challenge of this solution is that it is situated on the top floor of the law library. Following a kickoff meeting to establish the program needs, LPAS presented multiple plan solutions which were vetted with the user group.

University of the Pacific Occupational Therapy Renovation
This tenant improvement project at the Sacramento Campus renovates the first floor of the Muddox Building for a new Occupational Therapy Program. The space is designed to include flexible classrooms and laboratory space, a multipurpose clinic room with therapy tables and equipment, faculty offices and open work areas, administrative space, student preparation and study areas for small seminars and storage space.

Owen Hall Music Center Renovation
The renovation of Owen Hall Music Center provides significant cosmetic improvements to the interior of the building including new paint, lighting and carpet, converting the spaces into flexible classrooms, rehearsal spaces, faculty offices, lobby/ lounge and restrooms. The project also provides acoustical improvements and ADA-compliant, gender affirmative restrooms.

UC Davis Health Medical Office Building
The Design-Build team of Rudolph and Sletten, LPAS, and Boulder Associates are currently delivering this new a medical campus that promotes wellness, convenience, and reflects the needs of the local community. The Medical Office Building (MOB) is the first of 3 buildings planned for the campus and is situated on a 10-acre site as part of a 34.5-acre parcel. The 3-story 105,000 gsf project consists of surface parking, a drive-through clinic, and outdoor space for patient and staff respite. The design process was focused on optimizing delivery of services, creating a positive patient experience and an ideal work environment for physicians and staff.

Lake Tahoe Community College Science and Campus Renovations for Efficiency
This renovation and modernization project will address several key areas that will increase efficiency, improve functionality and enhance services to students. Spaces to be renovated include classrooms, science labs, lab services, faculty offices, study rooms, meeting rooms, computer help desk and storage areas. Areas for student gathering and collaboration have been integrated into the design of circulation corridors and nodes that will add to the culture and social character of the campus. Gathering and seating areas will also be incorporated into the redesigned main entry plaza of the building.

Millberry Union ADA and Restroom Renovations
LPAS completed a feasibility study to identify code and accessibility deficiencies and to improve flow and functionality of the student union building. The program included new dedicated and single occupancy restrooms, campus police service area, administrative offices, re-function space and storage. In order to maintain access and operations, the project was designed to be completed in 3 phases of work, with the first two phases currently completed.

This highly technical project for the UCD School of Medicine is an integral part of the Health Science District on the UC Davis campus. The cage washing facility plays a critical role in the University’s research mission and is operated by Teaching and Research Animal Care Services (TRACS). The project’s full equipment and space utilization meets AAALAC compliance, provides optimization of campus utilities, and allows for future expansion while maintaining its day-to-day operations.

The Ann E. Pitzer Center is a classroom and recital hall facility designed specifically to meet the needs of the music department and the community as a venue for the study and performance of music. At the heart of the building is a 399seat classroom and performance venue with variable acoustics that has been designed to the highest standards of acoustical architecture. A spacious lobby welcomes students and patrons and can accommodate performances and events.

The new Acacia building is the first new construction building for the CSUS Stockton campus. Strategically located, the new 2-story academic building will meet master plan goals to develop Acacia Street as the central circulation and primary access to the campus. Life Village IV Student Housing
This new Collaborative Design-Build project brings much needed student housing to the Turlock campus. The program includes 122 beds (primarily double-occupancy), student study and lounge spaces, support spaces, and a maintenance office and shop. Located at the edge of campus, the design challenge was to create a project that provides a welcoming entry to student housing, but also connects the new building with the adjacent, established student housing village.
The design solution features an L-shaped building configuration to reduce the corridor length. The building floor plans create a welcoming environment for the students through spontaneous opportunities and connectivity to social and study spaces on each floor. Residential Assistant units are centrally located on each floor to support their ability to manage.

RFD has an unparalleled database of critical area and cost benchmarking information. We have gathered this information from hundreds of projects over the past 30+ years representing a range of science and engineering facility types. When working on a new project, we select the most appropriate representative projects from our historical database to help validate a variety of area and cost ratios during Programming. These ratios include Net/Gross Area ratio, ratio of Laboratory to Laboratory Support Space, Laboratory Density, and Construction Cost/GSF. This process helps give the Owner and Design Team a comfort level with the project parameters at an early stage, allowing the team to proceed into the Design phases with greater confidence.
Our approach to designing laboratory spaces is highly collaborative. We actively seek input from all project stakeholders including faculty members, researchers, administration staff, maintenance personnel, health and safety officers - as well as the other members of the design team.
