Director’s Notes

I hope you’re as lucky to have a sister as great as mine. This lady has never let me get away with a decision without giving me some kind of third degree. She was famous for it even as a teenager. She could argue her friends’ parents out of grounding them. She and Queen Elizabeth II seem to have that in common.

Knowing that people are going to make the decisions they are going to make, all Elizabeth can do is to make sure they’re sure. She appeals to their empathy, to their fighting spirit or to their intelligence –whatever the moment requires of her. Just as long as it betters them.

The Audience had its premiere in February 2013 at the Gielgud Theatre in London and opened in New York at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in 2015, in both cases starring Dame Helen Mirren as Elizabeth. The play was broadcast on “National Theatre Live” in June 2013 to the largest British and North American audience of any of their live broadcasts. Advice on political and historical content was provided by Professor Vernon Bogdanor, emeritus professor of government at Oxford and former tutor to David Cameron. During its run, parts of the play were updated to reflect current events.

Playwright Peter Morgan, who authored the critically acclaimed Netflix drama

The Crown, takes you behind the scenes at Buckingham Palace. Here, for the past 60 years, Queen Elizabeth II has met with each of her 12 prime ministers in private weekly meetings. Both parties to the meetings agree never to repeat what is said in these “audiences,” From Winston Churchill to David Cameron, Morgan imagines what these meetings might have been like as they span the decades of the Queen’s reign.

Meet the Cast

(in alphabetical order)

Will Cooke (Harold Wilson) is making his debut at LTA after performing (and understudying) in many musical and dramatic productions at theaters in our area, including the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Studio Theatre, Folger Theatre, Constellation Theatre, Taffety Punk Theatre Company, Signature Theatre, Everyman Theatre and Center Stage, among others. Will graduated from Georgetown University and has a certificate from the British American Drama Academy/Yale School of Drama and an MFA from the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy of Classical Acting.

Paul Donahoe (Equerry) was last seen at LTA as Bob Ewell in To Kill a Mockingbird. In this area, he has recently played Wilhelm Furtwangler in Taking Sides at PCP and The Detective in TT4W’s A Dream Within a Dream: Madness at the Torpedo Factory. Paul’s professional credits include Edmund in Long Day’s Journey into Night and The Bridegroom in Blood Wedding at the Intiman Theater in Seattle. At the McCarter Theater in Princeton, Paul appeared as Richard in Ah, Wilderness! and Francisco/ Mime in Hamlet.

Robert Heinly (Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden, Detective) is honored to return to the LTA stage with this amazing cast. He was most recently seen at 1st Stage in Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, voted 2017 Best Play (Small Professional Theatre) by Broadway World. Robert previously appeared at LTA in To Kill a Mockingbird, A Christmas Carol and Picasso at the Lapin Agile. He would like to give special thanks to Rip Claassen of American Backstage Company for his help with creating “Mr. Churchill” and indeed all his looks. For his father –a great Churchill buff.

Richard Isaacs (Tony Blair, David Cameron) is excited to be back at LTA with such a talented cast and crew. Other LTA appearances include A Christmas Carol, Laughing Stock, Plaza Suite, Dial ‘M’ for Murder and Saturday, Sunday, Monday . Thanks to so many for making this such a fun experience, especially Ruben for being a great director, Rebecca and Russell for being wonderful producers, our marvelous stage managers, Joan and Christine, and the great cast (especially Nicky McDonnell) and, of course, David Vecera (who makes it all worthwhile).

Evie Graham Jewett (Young Elizabeth) is making her debut at LTA and couldn’t be more proud to be doing so with such a fabulous cast and crew. Her recent roles include Becky in A Little Princess at ACCT and ensemble roles in Seussical, Elf Jr. and The Sound of Music. Evie is a competitive swimmer, a lacrosse goalie, an inventor and highly acclaimed Middle Child of three girls. She hopes someday to be a Navy Seabee, U.S. senator, alpaca rancher … or perhaps, the Queen.

Kirk Lambert (Gordon Brown, Security Man) is excited and honored to be a part of this magnificent cast and crew. This play follows on the heels of representing the Little Theatre of Alexandria at the NVTA One-Act Play Festival. Kirk has appeared at the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap Filene Center, Studio Theatre and Alden Theatre. He is a proud member of SAG-AFTRA; look for him in film, commercials and on the telly. Kirk would like to thank the entire LTA team as well as his family for their support.

Brian Lyons-Burke (John Major) is “royally” thrilled to join LTA in its production of The Audience. He most recently appeared as King Triton in The Little Mermaid at DTC, having previously appeared there as Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof (for which he received a WATCH nomination as Best Lead in a Musical). Other local credits include The Bridges of Madison County (RBTC), Monty Python’s Spamalot (at RMT and WOB), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (WOB) and The Miracle Worker (RLT), among many others.

Nicky McDonnell (Queen Elizabeth II) received her BFA in acting from Emerson College in Boston. She has worked and toured in theater in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, D.C. and Europe. Nicky’s favorite roles include Diana in Next to Normal, Maria Callas in Master Class at LTA (2003 WATCH Award for Best Actress), Rose in Gypsy (LTA), Jane in Black Hole (PCP)and Big and Little Edie in Grey Gardens (LTA). In real life, Nicky is a top-producing Realtor at TTR Sotheby’s International Realty. She lives with her much-loved and patient husband, Stephen, and two equally adored and patient boys, Joe and Dean. A huge thank you to the cast and crew of The Audience and LTA for this “sovereign” opportunity.

Janette Moman (Margaret Thatcher, Bobo MacDonald) loves strong, bold characters, so Margaret in particular is a natural fit in this wonderful cast. Her recent roles include Dinah Grayson in The Dixie Swim Club (ACCT), Emma Goldman in Ragtime (LTA), Gloria Thorpe in Damn Yankees (MCP), Muriel in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (ESP) and Velma Von Tussle in Hairspray (LTA). Janette’s background is in contemporary Christian music performance, and she works with elementary school students in musical theater productions and summer camps.

Meet the Crew

(in alphabetical order)

Ceci Albert and Lisa Brownsword (Costume Design) are delighted to return to LTA, where they designed costumes for A Christmas Carol (2014), The Odd Couple (Female Version), Steel Magnolias and Red, White and Tuna. They have also collaborated on shows at ACCT, HBP, MCP, DS, PCP and TACT. Thank you to Annie Vroom and LTA for sharing their costume closet. In addition, Ceci and Lisa wouldlike to thank their family and friends … as they turn every room into a sewing room.

Stacey Becker (Co-Set Decoration, Properties Design) has been lead painter for several shows at LTA, most recently Anne of Green Gables and A Christmas Carol. This is her first adventure in set dressing and props. She is thrilled to work with the producers, director and cast on this show.

Jamie Blake (Co-Wardrobe) is thrilled to be working alongside Donna again, and is a pleased to be working with the amazing team of Ruben, Rebecca and Russ and The Audience cast. Jamie has spent a good part of the last 30 years at LTA and has loved every minute of it. She’s been on and off the Board of Governors and has won Best Producer twice, the last time with Eileen Doherty for Widdershins. And long, long ago, Jamie won Best New Member.

Luana Bossolo (Co-Set Painting Design) has been painting sets at LTA for eight years and won an LTA Award for best set painting for The Full Monty. A longtime admirer of Queen Elizabeth II and British royal history (and still remembering the days when Alistair Cooke hosted PBS’ Masterpiece Theatre), she jumped at the chance to work on The Audience and tackle one of the most complex set painting assignments ever.

Ken Brown (Set Design, Set Construction) has been lead set builder on several recent productions, including Red, White and Tuna and A Christmas Carol. This is Ken’s first time as a set designer, and he is very excited to have this opportunity.

Ken and Patti Crowley (Lighting Design) are excited to be working at LTA once again. Their most recent designs at LTA include Legally Blonde, Anything Goes, History Boys, In the Heights and 33 Variations. Ken and Patti have designed lights for numerous other area theaters and are the recipients of numerous awards, including LTA, RCP, FCT and WATCH awards for lighting design.

Christine Farrell (Co-Stage Manager) is thrilled to be partnered once again with Joan Lada and to be a member of The Audience production team. Her favorite past production team credits at LTA include: To Kill a Mockingbird; The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged); The Odd Couple (Female Version); The Game’s Afoot; Monty Python’s Spamalot; The 39 Steps; 33 Variations; Rabbit Hole, and Company. Christine has also worked with production teams at many other area theaters.

Donna Hauprich (Co-Wardrobe) has worked backstage for several shows since joining LTA. She is excited to share wardrobe duties with the resident expert, Jamie Blake. Donna finds working backstage fun; she enjoys meeting so many talented actors (and royalty!), despite having to wash their clothes. By day, Donna works as a massage therapist.

Marian Holmes (Assistant Producer) is delighted to be participating in The Audience in a small way and from far away (Florida, a whole other world). Here is where you find the disclaimer that any errors or omissions in the playbill that you hold in your hands are her fault.

Joan A.S. Lada (Co-Stage Manager) is happy to return to LTA and join Christine Farrell as a member of the SM team. Pam Leonowich (Master Electrician) has been climbing the light ladders at LTA for over 12 years and is proud to follow in her mother’s theater footsteps. Her mother managed and designed productions for the troops during World War II with the British Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). Pam is pleased to be teaming again with lighting designers Ken and Patti and LTA’s dedicated light crew.

Kathy Murphy (Co-Set Painting Design) is a longtime student of fine arts, but relatively new to the creative world of theatrical set painting. She has enjoyed assisting on several LTA productions, beginning in 2015. She designed paint for A Christmas Carol in 2017 and for Red, White and Tuna last year. She is thrilled to share the work with the talented Luana Bossolo and to work again with Russ Wyland.

Sue Pinkman (Hair and Makeup Design) has been acting and directing in the NOVA theater community for over 30 years and styling wigs since 2005 while she was directing Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at RCP. Since then, she has received multiple WATCH Awards for hair/makeup. Sue was last at LTA directing the WATCH Award-winning Hairspray and is currently teaching an LTA acting class. She is very proud to be part of this amazing “community” of artists who spend thousands of hours each year bringing live theater to Northern Virginia.

Rebecca Sheehy (Co-Producer) is absolutely delighted to work with Co-Producer Russ Wyland and Director Ruben Vellekoop and the amazingly talented cast and crew of LTA’s production of The Audience. Her recent projects at LTA include co-producer for The Fabulous Lipitones andco-property design for Anne of Green Gables, West Side Story and Anything Goes. Rebecca wants to thank everyone at LTA for being so friendly and to thank her family, friends and all the dedicated volunteers that make these productions so much fun.

Cheryl Sinsabaugh (Dialect Coach) has spent her life in amateur (community) theater all over the world, mainly onstage but in recent years also backstage –stage managing, lighting, makeup, props, etc. She has worked as a dialect/accent coach for several earlier LTA productions, including History Boys and A Christmas Carol, and also for Pride and Prejudice and The Miracle Worker at ACCT. Cheryl lives in Annandale with her husband, Michael, and two Siamese cats.

Ruben Vellekoop (Director) has history as both an actor and a director. He directed Lazarus for Unstrung Harpist via Capital Fringe, a reading of Buddy at the Acting Studio, The City of Conversation for The Colonial Players of Annapolis, a reading of The Deadliest Bar in Baltimore and The Who’s Tommy at Kensington Arts Theatre. Ruben’s acting credits include Putti van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank at Ovations Theatre, Branton and Roger Strong in Catch Me If You Can at NextStop, King Arthur in Monty Python’sSpamalot at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre and Voice and Looney Tunes in Why Torture Is Wrong (and the People Who Love Them) at The Colonial Players of Annapolis.

Alan Wray (Sound Design) has designed sound for numerous LTA productions, including Legally Blonde; Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike; Anything Goes; Ragtime; The Mystery of Edwin Drood; Picnic (WATCH nomination); Rabbit Hole; 33 Variations (LTA Award) and the mysterious Widdershins (LTA Award). Russell Wyland (Co-Producer, Co-Set Decoration Design, Rigging) has produced 20 shows at LTA, including Red, White and Tuna; The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged); 33 Variations; Monty Python’s Spamalot; Hairspray, and A Christmas Carol (twice). He has won several LTA awards over the years for producing and set dressing as well as two WATCH Awards for best production, one for best set dressing and two for special effects. Russ is currently LTA President.

Welcome to the “Shakespeare Garden” in The Little Theatre of Alexandria Courtyard! This beautiful garden was made possible with donations from LTA members and supporters who purchased bricks during the LTA Council’s fund-raising campaign February-April of 2017. We have planted floral species that figured prominently in the Bard’s writings. We invite you to check out our courtyard during intermission and see how many you can identify!

The Council of The Little Theatre of Alexandria, organized in 1961, is a dedicated group of about 80 members that supports the theatre with special contributions. While our “Shakespeare Garden” is our most massive accomplishment so far, our past contributions included: scholarships for high school students, a new range, draperies and ice maker for the Council Green Room, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for sponsored theatre seats, a computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements, including exterior defibrillators (AEDs) for safety. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $215,000. The Council conducts three business/social meetings per year, and decorates the theatre for the winter holidays. We are pleased to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and proud to support one of the best community theatres in America today!
