The Game’s Afoot
written by Ken Ludwig directedby

Rachel Alberts and Bobbie HerbstA murderously funny, witty and fast-paced comedy/thriller by Ken Ludwig. It’s 1936 and Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But when one of the guests ends up dead, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turns dangerous. Gillette takes it upon himself to assume the persona of his beloved Holmes, to track down the killer before his next victim appears. The danger and hilarity are non-stop in this glittering whodunit.

Director’s Notes
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, written in 1843, is undoubtedly one of the world’s best-loved stories. Dickens’ approach to the novella was to divide it into distinct episodes, called staves, a term that refers to a musical notation staff. The use of this term synchronizes beautifully with the title, A Christmas Carol
The story is largely allegorical, with a clear theme of redemption. Each ghost has a specific function: the Ghost of Christmas Past represents memory; the Ghost of Christmas Present represents charity; and finally, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come represents the universal fear of judgment after death. Scrooge symbolizes a self-centered, self-regarding society. By way of contrast, the Cratchits portray the joy that may be experienced despite poverty and difficult circumstances. Delivering a staunch monologue in support of Christmas, Fred, Scrooge’s nephew, serves as a foil to Scrooge and a vision of what Scrooge may yet become.
It is here that we see the moral of the play: Each of us has the opportunity to be redeemed from a life of inward focus to one of outward focus. When confronted with memories of a happier past, an understanding of those less fortunate, and the paralyzing thought of punishment or reward after death, we can complete the conversion to become charitable, caring, and socially conscious members of society.
As you enjoy this timeless production, allow yourself a moment for personal reflection on the glorious memories of Christmases past, the joys that can be found in the present, and the optimism for a better and brighter future. I hope that you will find A Christmas Carol to be a magical, reminiscent encounter illustrating the spirit of Christmas, which can last throughout the year.
With warm wishes for a happy Christmas, Rachael Hubbard
**My efforts are dedicated to Jeremy Levesque, a young man who portrayed the character of Ebenezer Scrooge beautifully on the stage and who lived in the present with a joy and energy that truly exemplified the spirit of Christmas. We lost him at a very young age, but the lessons that his young life taught us live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
