Director’s Notes

For some reason, murder mysteries are one of the most popular literary genres—both in book and play form. I mean, by definition, people die in them, and that’s usually not a source of entertainment. Generally, the creators are careful to have the characters who are murdered either not be in the storyline for too long so that the audience doesn’t become invested in them as people, or they make them so nasty that their murder doesn’t raise a lot of sympathy. Does that happen in Design for Murder? You didn’t really think I would give away that spoiler, did you? And the murderer? He or she is another set of conundrums that should leave the reader/viewer guessing up until the last moment. Without giving away anything, that is certainly the case in this play. And I think that’s why murder mysteries enjoy such popularity. Bottom line: Hope you enjoy this one, and hope it keeps you guessing until the big “reveal”!

SHOW SYNOPSIS

The story concerns Celia Granger and her efforts to maintain the traditions attached to her family and home. At the sudden death of a staff member, Celia finds herself living in a violent present. When the chauffeur stumbles on information linking her son, David, to the death, he too finds himself in danger. The detective on the case, a rugged self-made man who is revealed to have admired Celia, brings a touch of romance to her life while two female friends bring a little comedy, but are they among the suspects?

LTA COVID Pandemic Health and Safety Standards

LTA will continue to follow all current health and safety standards set by governmental authorities while the COVID pandemic continues, and we will maintain our full participation in the ALX Promise program sponsored by the Alexandria Health Department and Visit Alexandria. Starting September 1, 2022, LTA will no longer require proof of COVID vaccination or PCR testing (if not vaccinated), for audience admission to our facility, and we will no longer be holding out every third seat for social distancing. However, we will still be requiring wearing a mask indoors, including during a performance. Proof of full vaccination, including boosters, against COVID is required for all cast, crew, volunteers and staff, and for those auditioning at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. This may, hopefully, change later in the season.

Meet the Cast (in alphabetical order)

Brendan Chaney (Carlin), from Aberdeen, NC, was a competitive speech and debater at the national level in high school. At college, he had to find an outlet, and theatre seemed the natural place. By the end of his freshman year, he was on an acting scholarship. Brendan tackled a diverse series of roles, from Uncle Peck in How I Learned to Drive to Robert in Proof. After college he took some time off until 2016, when he appeared in MCP’s Unnecessary Farce, and he more recently appeared in Taking Sides (PCP) and A Fox on The Fairway, Wait Until Dark and Prelude to a Kiss—all at LTA.

Frank Cooper (Brent) is delighted to be in Design for Murder after attending improv classes I, II and III at LTA. Frank grew up in Alexandria and is relatively new to theater but has worked professionally in film, music and art production. Frank has been a chef in multiple cuisines in and out of the Alexandria/DC area; restored historic fine art, and currently makes whimsical decisions for random government agencies in his free time.

Erin Gallalee (Martha Brand) is happy to return to the LTA stage in Design for Murder. Past productions with LTA are To Kill a Mockingbird (Maudie Atkinson), The Woman in Black (Woman), The Secret Garden (Alice) and many productions of A Christmas Carol in various roles. She was also a performer in LTA’s PET (Partnership for Educational Theatre Project). Other favorite productions have been The Crucible (Ann Putnam) with SSS, Terra Nova (Kathleen) with PCP and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Mae) with SMP.

Pete Leggett (Nora Taylor) is thrilled to make their LTA debut in Design for Murder. They have performed in many shows, such as Really Really (Colgate Players) and We Are Pussy Riot or Everything is P.R. (UVA). Favorite roles include Adriana in The Comedy of Errors and Megan/#14 in The Wolves, and they also directed What Every Girl Should Know and Two Gentlemen of Verona (both at UVA). Pete costume designed The Tempest and couldn’t be happier to be returning home to the theatre.

Meet the Cast

James Lorenzin (David Granger) is from Silicon Valley, CA, and is making his debut at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. He gained previous acting experience during his classes in high school and as a theater minor at The College of Wooster. His last role was Peter in The Golden Age by Louis Nowra, produced by The College of Wooster Department of Theatre and Dance. He would like to thank LTA for welcoming him and looks forward to working with this theatre for many more seasons.

Elizabeth Loyal (Kathy) is thrilled to make her LTA debut in Design for Murder. She has appeared in many shows, including Peter Pan, White Christmas, Sweeney Todd, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Anima Mundi, Over the Tavern and Much Ado About Nothing (Hebron High School). Favorite roles include Potiphar’s Wife in Joseph…Dreamcoat and Hedy LaRue in How to Succeed… (United States Naval Academy). She thanks her husband, sister, parents and friends for their endless love and support!

Denny Martinez-Barrera (Moreno) is truly honored to be a part of LTA and its production of Design for Murder. He has also appeared with The Arlington Players, where he played the role of Dodd in their production of Waiting for the Host. He studied abroad in Scotland to expand his acting skills. Denny’s drive has allowed him to partake in a national speech and debate tournament known as Phi-Ro-Pi, where he was awarded a semifinalist title in 2018 and 2021.

Kathy Ohlhaber (Celia Granger) is thrilled to return to the LTA stage. With 20 years of theater experience, Kathy has appeared in many shows throughout the DMV area, including The Haunting of Hill House and Ripcord (LTA), Other Desert Cities (VCT), Defying Gravity and The Cemetery Club (ACCT) and Rehearsal for Murder (RCP). Kathy lives in the heart of Old Town with her beloved dog, Sookie. She is grateful to her parents and sister for always supporting her passion for theater.

Patricia Spencer Smith (Mrs. Hamilton) was last seen here as Margaret in The Savannah Disputation, which won the Ruby Griffith Award for Best Play. She has been in community theatre for about 40 years, both in the DMV and CT/RI, and was last seen in Defying Gravity at ACCT. Other favorite shows through the years have been The Game’s Afoot (LTA), Dandelion Wine (SCP), No Exit (PCP) and Big River (DS). She would like to thank her husband, Norm, and her friends from Bush Hill Presbyterian Church for their constant support.

Janice Zucker (Louisa Cortlandt) is thrilled to be back at LTA! Previous roles with LTA are Abby in Ripcord, Hucklebee in The Fantasticks and Frieda in The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife. Other favorite roles include Doris in The Cemetery Club and Aunt Iney in Southern Hospitality (both at ACCT); Yente in Fiddler on the Roof, Elsa in The Sound of Music and Big Mama in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (all at SMP); and Mother Superior in Nunsense and Bubbe in Crossing Delancey (both at VTC). Meet the Crew (in alphabetical order)

Hilary Adams (Assistant Producer) is so thrilled to be sharing this show with all of you. This is only her second time producing a mainstage show (she jumped in the deep end earlier this year at LTA, producing the sold-out Bright Star), but she counts herself exceedingly lucky to be working with some of the best that Northern Virginia community theatre has to offer when it comes to designers, cast, and crew. She thanks her loving husband, Griffin, for his unwavering support throughout all of her theatrical endeavors. Enjoy the show!

Kirstin Apker (Co-Set Decoration) has filled numerous backstage roles at LTA, including props designer for Legally Blonde, Key for Two, Laughing Stock, Rumors, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, The Producers (WATCH award) and The Nance (LTA award). Kirstin was set decorator for Legally Blonde and Steel Magnolias (WATCH award) and assistant stage manager for Something Rotten!, A Party to Murder, Plaza Suite and Sweeney Todd. She was artistic painter for Heaven Can Wait and appeared onstage in To Kill a Mockingbird. Love always to Tom and her four sweet kiddos for their support of Mommy’s avocation.

Shelby Baker (Property Design) is pleased to be the props designer for Design for Murder. She previously worked on A Christmas Carol and Legally Blonde and more recently as props designer for Prelude to a Kiss. She is a theater major graduate of George Mason University.

Julie Fischer (Set Design) is honored to work with the production crew of Design for Murder. She previously worked on LTA sets as designer, master carpenter and set construction crew and appreciates the opportunity to work with Jim, Jeff and everyone who volunteers their time and energy to this wonderful community.

Brittany Huffman (Stage Manager) is excited to return to LTA in this role. Previous roles as stage manager with LTA include Fences, Ripcord, Love Letters and A Fox on the Fairway. She was most recently seen onstage in As You Like It as Celia with NOVA Nightsky and currently serves on the board for TAP as Director of Stewardship and Education. Much love and thanks to her family and friends, who keep her sane and in coffee throughout the show.

Jim Hutzler (Co-Master Carpenter) has worked on many LTA sets as master carpenter and set construction crew, often alongside the set painting of his wife, Mary. Recent WATCH award nominations with cobuilder Jeff Nesmeyer include To Kill a Mockingbird in 2016, Anything Goes in 2017 and Harvey in 2018. Recently he helped build the set for Prelude to a Kiss and Something Rotten!. Thanks to all those volunteers who make LTA the special place that it is.

Jeff Nesmeyer (Co-Master Carpenter) is pleased to be working again with Jim Hutzler and the great group of set construction volunteers. He has been involved in set builds at LTA, PCP and DS since 2006. He was nominated for three WATCH awards for Anything Goes, Harvey and Dracula (all at LTA). He won LTA Excellence in Set Construction awards for Harvey, Dracula and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. He thanks LTA for its confidence in his carpentry abilities, Jim for his camaraderie, and his wife, Diane, for her support.

Dierdre (De) Nicholson-Lamb (Set Painting) is pleased to be working with the wonderful cast and crew. De recently painted Prelude to a Kiss (LTA) and On Golden Pond (ACCT), plus LTA’s Enchanted April (WATCH nominee), Picnic (WATCH nominee), The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, The Rocky Horror Show, Sweeney Todd, Witness for the Prosecution, Into the Woods, Auntie Mame, Desperate Hours and Footloose. De designed the set for LTA’s The Will Rogers Follies and Saturday, Sunday, Monday.

Cleo Potter they/them (Co-Lighting Design) is pleased to be co-lighting designer with Jay, having recently co-stage managed LTA’s Prelude to a Kiss. Cleo graduated from The College of Wooster, Ohio in May 2020 with a concentration in stage management and lighting. They were assistant lighting designer for LTA’s Bright Star and worked lights for ACCT’s The Cemetery Club. Cleo would like to thank everyone in the cast and on the production team who helped this show come together!

Deborah Remmers (Co-Set Decoration) is an artist with diverse interests, and set decoration is one medium in which she works. She is pleased to be a member of the crew for Design for Murder. Deborah enjoyed set decoration for LTA’s Prelude to a Kiss and To Kill a Mockingbird and received a WATCH nomination for set decoration on LTA’s Ruby Griffith award-winning The Savannah Disputation.

Jessie Roberts (Director) earned a master’s degree in theatre from Brandeis University. After performing on stage in San Francisco and New York City, she went over to the “dark side” and became an attorney. Since finding her way back to her second love, theatre, she has been involved in over 50 plays in the Northern Virginia area. (Her husband, Jon, is her first love.) Jessie is so pleased to return to LTA, where she directed Ripcord by David Lindsay-Abaire.

Jon Roberts (Sound and Projection Design) has done sound and projection design for over 40 productions in the DC/NOVA area and has been nominated for seven WATCH awards in sound and/or projection design and won the award for his projection in Last Summer at Bluefish Cove (DS). You may not notice his projection work in this production, but it’s there! Watch for it. He thanks his lovely wife, Jessie (aka Design for Murder director), for yet another opportunity to practice his theatre arts.

The story follows Deloris Van Cartier, who after witnessing a murder, is put in protective custody in a convent. While disguised as a nun, she helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she rediscovers her own. Jay Stein (Co-Lighting Design/Master Electrician) has been part of the local theater scene, on and off, for many years, both on stage and behind it. Previous shows include The Dinner Party and Ripcord (both VTC), which seemed to require many more lighting instruments than he thought they would! When not on stage or behind it, Jay can be found pushing lots of buttons as a technical director for several national TV news shows.

Lanae Sterrett (Hair/Makeup Design) has had the pleasure of working on LTA shows A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Something Rotten! and Blue Stockings and productions at many other theaters in the greater DC area. She has worked on various crews for LTA since July 2018, and this is her first time designing. She would like to thank her parents, Renee and Lawrence, for their love and support as well as Susan Boyd, Robin Maline and Chanel Lancaster for passing on their wisdom in this area.

Carol Strachan (Producer) previously produced LTA’s Prelude to A Kiss, Witness for the Prosecution, Scapino! and A Christmas Carol (twice, in 2014 and 2019). She designed props for A Party to Murder and a different A Christmas Carol (2021). As an actor, Carol has appeared here on stage in Lady Windermere’s Fan, Pack of Lies, It Runs in the Family, Blithe Spirit and Lettice and Lovage. Her most recent onstage role was in The Audience with The British Players in March/April 2022.

Judy Whelihan (Costume Designer) has been dressing people for the stage for nearly 30 years. Favorite shows include 1776, Amore, Blood Brothers, Greater Tuna, Wit, Doubt, Les Miserables and The Full Monty for several groups in the greater Washington area, where she has received 13 WATCH nominations and two WATCH awards.

Robin Worthington (Wardrobe Coordinator) is delighted to organize the crew to dress the cast of Design for Murder. As Co-Chair of LTA’s Wardrobe Committee, Robin has been a wardrobe mistress and assisted challenging quick changes behind the scenes for the following LTA plays since 2015: In the Heights, Grey Gardens, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare: Abridged, Anything Goes, Legally Blonde, Driving Miss Daisy, Anne of Green Gables, The Audience, The Nance, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Fantasticks, The Producers, A Few Good Men, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Fences and Something Rotten!.

Russell M. Wyland (Rigging) has been an LTA member and volunteer for more than 30 years. During that time, he has worked in several capacities, including seven years as President and eight years as Governor for Production. However, his first love is rigging, the art of masking the stage with drapes and making things fly from above and travel across the stage. Russ’ last rigging was for Something Rotten!, which he also co-produced this past summer.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a group of dedicated members who support financial projects for the theatre and provide numerous social events with dinners, receptions, and other member gatherings. The Council promotes and supports volunteerism throughout the theatre to ensure continued success in all areas, i.e., backstage, front of house, box office, etc.; we also provide need-based scholarship funding to support numerous adult and youth educational programs within the theatre. The Council is proud to sponsor the Shakespeare Garden which has become a community favorite with many stopping in just to relax and “waste my time in it.”
