Dir ector ’s Notes
Driving Miss Daisy takes place in the Deep South city of Atlanta and spans 25 years, from 1948 to 1973. At t he beginning of t his period, t he Sout h is fully segregated, primarily by race and somewhat by religion.
As a child of most of t his period, I experienced segregation first hand by attending all-white schools and remember vividly “whites only” and “colored only” signs in restaurants, parks, drinking fountains and t heaters, etc.
In 1954, t he landmark decision in Brown vs. Board of Education, declaring school segregation unconstitutional, began a violent period of slow change in t he Sout h.
As an example of t he continued struggle wit h civil rights, t he Georgia state flag was redesigned to contain t he Confederate battle flag, which can be seen on our stage. This symbol of t he Confederacy was not changed until 2001.
The play by Alfred Uhry is set during these troubled times and deals with prejudice and anti-Semitism. It is t he true story of Uhry’s grandmot her and t he chauffeur she employed for over 25 years.
One of my favorite scenes occurs when Daisy finds out t hat people bombed t he temple, and Hoke shares a memory about finding his friend’s fat her hanging from a tree. Daisy says, “Who would do such a t hing?” and Hoke responds, “You know as good as me, always t he same ones. ”
Have we moved on from t hose turbulent times as depicted in t his play? I believe we have.
Do we need to do more? I’ll let you and time be t he judge
– Jim Howard
