Dare to dream. . . and hello Summer! Summer is finally here and so is our biggest issue of the year! Our July/August issue has become special to us and is one we all look forward to. A time of year we can do everything bigger and better, and when is that ever a bad thing? The team have worked hard this issue to pull together page after page of amazing and inspirational design. We have a wonderful feature on BOYSTOWN, a very popular community sim that is celebrating a very special anniversary this July. We also spotlight N4RS, a brand that has risen to the top over the last year and has branched out into new areas of home decor. THE LOFT & ARIA have been taking Second Life by storm with their collaborations and we are delighted to feature them both, together, in this issue! Earlier this month, we announced our plans to turn LTD into a monthly publication, starting in J anuary 2017. Ever since we launched in 2014, we have released every 2 months so this will be a big and exciting change for us. We are looking forward to bringing you the best in home and garden design on a more frequent basis. We hope you enjoy this larger than ever LTD. Get inspired, and always‌ Love to Decorate!

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

40

july / august 2016 - editor’s note

R... What is Second Life® to you? Years back a friend had asked me; “ What is Second Life® ?” and I had thought about it a lot, because I never knew what exactly to say. The easiest answer was this: an Online Game/ Virtual World but after almost 10 years of being in Second Life®, and I had discovered that it is so much more, one big colorful world. A world built up by a cluster of smaller communities, individuals and kindred spirits. A place full of unique people with different beliefs, religions, race, interests,... coming together to create, to spend time and just enjoying the possibilities of what Second Life® has to offer. While having all this on my mind; I have to think about our community spread and the residents of Boystown, one of the oldest and also biggest Communities in the world of Second Life®. I am really happy that they are a part of this issue - the biggest Issue of this year, which in all honesty is our biggest to date. It might be the July/August Issue but it is not a typical Summer issue. Instead of excessive use of beach inspired ideas & setups, our stylists worked hard to give a wonderful diversity which will be for you all to enjoy. For the Featured Designer Spread we are happy to have the collaborating designers of Yelo Uriza (Aria) and Colleen Desmoulins (The Loft) of Aria & The Loft as well as the amazing creator Alecat Breda of N4RS. You will also discover that the Arabian Nights inspired sets in our outdoor spread, travelling through Asia with 100 Years of Decor and ending up in our Lifestyle Feature with the topic of Mexico. For the first time ever we are introducing our staff members in their own spreads for this issue. Our stylists have challenged themselves with the Grey and Yellow theme, they have also collected Second Life® ’s finest food or even spend a morning with Tiffany and so much more. And with all that said, we wish you a beautiful summertime. Thank you for all your continued support. Enjoy browsing, until next time...

Alecat Breda

LTD J ULY/AUGUS T 2 01 6 I S S UE FE ATUR E D DES I GNE R WRITTEN BY VICTORIA BRINNER / STYLING BY LOKHE VERLACK / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROCKABILLYSUN DETHLY

“Let’s be frank. For a large part of Second Life® players, virtual erotica plays a big role in their experience. My main aim has been to cater for these needs in a classy manner.” The minute Alecat Breda said those words to me, I knew this was going to be a fascinating interview. The talented designer and I stood in the middle of the chic, modern N4RS mainstore, chatting about the side of Second Life® that most people participate in at least once while traveling through the grid “From prim to mesh, I’ve tried to create pieces of furniture which look great in any environment, and function well with great animations, good level of detail (LOD) and acceptable land impact.” N4RS — which is pronounced like ‘enforce’ in case you were wondering — was born out of necessity eight years ago. Alecat says the store began as a niche venture, catering to the LGBT community on Second Life® and then grew from there. “Intimacy in real life is not tacky or dirty. It is a beautiful experience. Why can it not be so in Second Life®?” As we strolled through the mainstore, Alecat pointed out some of his favorite pieces to me. One of them was a gorgeous Fauteuil set, which Alecat admitted he wished he could own in real life. He’d seen the chairs in a boutique hotel and recreated them in-world. The distressed wooden textures were so richly designed, I could picture the chairs sitting in my own house, while I cuddled up close with someone special. He also pointed out a hammock that I nearly hopped on while we were talking. It looked so comfortable. I don’t think he would have minded. “I’ve heard many stories of how N4RS pieces have brought people closer - even allowed people to take their Second Life® experience into real life and start relationships. There’s nothing nicer than intimacy and beauty combined.” Our conversation shifted more to the creative process while we continued to walk around. Alecat is a graphic designer in real life, so he has all the basics in place when starting a new project. He says his biggest hurdle is deciding what to create. Back in the prim days, he used to make houses and says he’d like to try his hand at building again. Although, he says he’s afraid to start because the small house he’s envisioned will keep growing and growing every time he opens 3DS Max or Maya. I just told him to go for it, because why not. Alecat laughed. “I’ll give in to the urge sooner or later. I’d love to build an old train station and renovate it with steel, glass and concrete into an upmarket home.” The amateur home decorator inside me got all sorts of excited. Oh, the possibilities. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. “Once a decision is made,” he continues, “I sketch it out, use reference material or even blue prints, and then I get lost in the work until it’s ready.” Many versions and iterations are then created, and dozens of versions are uploaded. Alecat jokes that it drives some people crazy. As a fellow perfectionist, I totally understand where he’s coming from. “Second Life® is a great place for designers and creators. I have the honor of knowing some of the biggest names in here. Most of the time they are the most humble people with nothing to prove. We exchange ideas, work flows, processes, technique. There are some seriously talented designers in Second Life® for which I am very grateful. We all keep each other motivated to improve with each piece.” He paused. “Often we end up

n the ds to om, not

talking absolute nonsense too.” I could see how easy it was to fall into nonsense talk with Alecat. He’s rather personable and friendly with a quick wit. At one point, I admitted to him that I owned one of his pieces — the Midnight Bar Table. “Naughty you,” he quipped. “That doesn’t come in PG.” Trying to keep my cool I replied, “I noticed. It looks fantastic in my kitchen though.” That struck a positive chord with him, much to my delight. “You’ve hit the nail on the head. Furniture needs to improve the whole room, not just stand out on its own. It needs to add something. Create a whole.” Alecat went on to say that staying motivated is vital to success as a creator in Second Life®. “You snooze in here, you fall behind. You have to keep developing skills and talents. Grow as a creator and grow as a person.” He hasn’t collaborated with any of the other designers he knows, but hopes to in the future. The timing just hasn’t been right yet. I unwittingly managed to stump him when I asked if there’s a trend in home decor he’d like to bring to N4RS for his customers. “People have their own styles and preferences and so do I. The trick is not to get stuck in your own preferences only, but to cater for what customers have asked for. My personal taste is two-fold. I like the glitz of cosmopolitan luxury but I feel just as at home in renovated industrial and repurposed furniture. My taste is very masculine. I have to draw the limits for myself with lace and bow ties. I tried but I just can’t.” Now would be a good time to mention that I wore a delicate, lavender lace dress to meet with him for this interview. I looked down at my outfit, eliciting a laugh from him. “That dress is gorgeous. I love it but I can’t make it.” Fortunately for the rest of us, he can make intricately designed furniture that compliments just about any theme you have in mind for your home, business or sim. And after a recent break in real life for some fun in the sun, Alecat says he’s back to work on several new projects. “I’m really counting my blessings, being invited to really great events in Second Life®. With each piece, I need to make sure event owners and their visitors get what they are accustomed to and more.” It is safe to say that his customers are accustomed to finding carefully crafted items every time. “My biggest compliment was overhearing a customer saying that they could see the item they were looking at was made with love. I was just another person in the shop. She had no clue that I made it.” And that is why N4RS has had so many years of success. Alecat’s passion for design and the love he puts into each piece shines through every single time. Informations and Links: • N4RS Marketplace. • N4RS Facebook • N4RS In-World

LTD MAY/J UNE 201 6 I SSUE DECORATOR’ S B LOCK STYLING BY AAISLING RESIDENT PHOTOGRAPHY BY LULU JAMESON

Describe yourself: A whimsical Fashionista. Striving to vivid colors and vibrant scenes. Passionate about ethnicity and music. Inspired by fairytales, bedtime stories and Urban Neon style. Why do you Love to Decorate? It is a passion I have in real life. I often collect abandoned furnitures that I fix and customize to fit my interiors. It is very important to me to give a “Lived-in” feeling to my scenes. Turning empty spaces into cozy homes, or authentic and unique retreats is everything to me.

aaisling resident

What is your inspiration for when it comes to decorating? I browse a lot through Pinterest to be honest. I gather every Architecture and Interior Design magazines I can and during my few years in Fine Arts, this was also one of my biggest interests. In world, I have some people who inspires me a lot, such as Neva Crystal, Elvi Hartley, Annan Adored and so on. I am also very much inspired by Vegetable World, Plants, Scandinavian,Shabby Chic, Ecclectic or Tropical Interiors.

ARIA & Th

the collaboration of Yel

lo Uriza and Colleen Desmoulins

LTD J ULY/AUGUS T 2 01 6 I S S UE FE ATUR E D DES I GNE R S WRITTEN BY ROSALYN MACARTHUR / STYLING BY BRITAIN KNAVE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN GIANT

In 2014, we interview Yelo Uriza on our first ever issue of LTD, and our second issue we had interviewed Colleen Desmoulins. Now for our July/August 2016 issue, we are interviewing them both together on their amazing collaboration. Two amazing talented designers have come together, and they are producing must have products. Home Décor is one of Second Life® favorite pass times. Whether you change your home every few months, like to change furniture every season or just tend to stick to what you love, it is important to ensure that the furniture you choose is your style, quality and generally perfectly useful to you. With so many different designers out there creating amazing items, the choices available to you is currently huge with some well known favorites that have been around for what seems forever in Second Life®. Both Aria and Loft are examples of these tried and tested designers who are always releasing items that are both functional and stylish for our Second Life® homes. With highly esteemed individual reputations established, the two designers have since decided to work together on a few collections that are featured at various in-world events; and have managed to create some of the most successful and interesting collaborations within the Second Life® shopping grid. With such creative skill and talent, I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet with Colleen Desmoulins and Yelo Uriza to get insight into their own individual brands as well as the amazing collaboration work we are now able to feature in our own homes. These two lovely ladies had quite the journey in Second Life® thus far. Loft designer, Colleen, was introduced to Second Life® by her husband while searching for another game they could enjoy together that was not “just a shooting game”. While here she managed to pick up some building from him as well and while he has not stuck around in-world, she has continued to upskill her own skills from the old prims to the now mesh model we all see around us. She credits some of her success on the help she has received from other designers and builders as well as completing courses online and always striving to better her last release. Yelo, designer of Aria, had a very similar journey, also brought into Second Life® by her now Real Life husband who encouraged her to join as she was a huge The Sims fan especially enjoying building and creating homes. While this was in the pre-sculpt days and everything was textured prims, she still managed to continue building and through the use of tutorials and some creative friends, she was able to continue to get more skilled and is now working in Second Life® full time. Both Colleen and Yelo have also completed Interior Décor qualifications within their own Real Lives which definitely has reflected within their own individual and collaborative efforts. Coming from an interior design background and also through the use of the internet, both Colleen and Yelo have managed to develop their own styles as well as branch out to ensure the collections they have released are attractive and can be used in any homes within Second Life®. Yelo calls her own style very minimalistic with a hotchpotch of more classic styles, industrial elements and Scandinavian design using pieces from various designers around the grid in combination with her own designs to decorate her own in-world home. Whilst Colleen is currently between homes while trying to decide on one, she enjoys mixing styles and especially different time periods bringing everything together through the use of colour, shape or texture.

july / august 2016 - featured designer

With a huge collection of home and décor magazines, that Colleen describes as out of control, a Pinterest that is definitely being used, as well as following different style trends, she designs items that are both functional and stylish. In her words “rooms she would love to have in Real Life”. Aria designer, Yelo, also enjoys visiting trade shows and design blogs to gather ideas and to start the creative design process ensuring that her designs fit both within her own style portfolio and to appeal to the wider Second Life® market. Another way in which both designers get design ideas; is through their own everyday lives here in Second Life®. Colleen and Yelo both enjoy the odd shopping trip and focus on items they love themselves from other designers. Colleen especially enjoys visiting Roleplay Sims and getting an idea of items that are lacking in function in Second Life® or items that are just not represented in-world yet. While she can often be seen hovering outside homes in community Sims or visiting the local hospital or school, it is part of her relaxation when she is not working. Yelo can be seen decorating her own home, spending time with close friends or playing Barbie with her avatar. Coming from their own very successful brands, I was especially curious about how they have been able to mesh their own styles in their collaborations. With a concrete friendship already established, Colleen and Yelo credit their success to that foundation as well as a similar taste in style and décor. They discovered early on that their design styles really compliment each other and they just had a mutual love for some of the same things. With what they both call a natural progression into collaboration, these ladies have developed a system of knowing what each other likes to create and balancing each other that way. For example, Colleen states that Yelo does not enjoy making the smaller décor pieces so would generally focus on the bigger pieces like a couch, while Colleen would create the smaller accompanying pieces. They have been able to establish a trust which has allowed them to really count on the other in creating something that would work well within the collection. Within the collaborations they have worked on together, Colleen identifies her favorite pieces, or children, as she called them, as Troubadour living room and the Abalone office collection. Whilst Yelo was not able to choose a favorite, simply stating that she loves them all. And with so many incredible pieces they have created both together and separately, I definitely understand why choosing just a few would be a tough task. While the Collaboration of Aria/Loft can currently be seen what seems to be everywhere, Colleen and Yelo are both still very much committed to growing their partnership as well as their own individual brands. Yelo is very much focussed on continuing to increase the success of Aria, and to continue with the strong partnership within their collaboration. While Colleen is thinking of taking a small break to continue some additional training. She wants to strive to do better with every new release. The common thing that both ladies wanted the rest of Second Life® to know is that they both really love the work that they do and the items they are creating. They want to keep their items functional, stylish and

Roger Spaulding: classy and are committed to continuing to upskill in the technologies within Second Life® and to keep designing the quality we have all come to know and expect from both these brands. And while I tried to get us all a sneak peak of what is next to come from this Aria/Loft collaboration efforts, Yelo simply said “we aspire to surprise and innovate, so you’re just gonna wait and see”. Guess we will have to do just that and see at Collabor88. Colleen has promised that the pieces we will see are some of her favorite styles of design as a period mid century piece. Generally, it can be easy to forget that designers are just normal people like you and me, who are working hard to make their own legacy within Second Life®. I was fortunate to be reminded of this fact again through my meeting both of these ladies. The style, grace, humility and sense of humor they both show; and the care they take in the work they do was truly impressive. And from this meeting with Colleen and Yelo, it is easy to see why their individual brands and the collaborate efforts have been so successful. The Aria/Loft Collaboration can be summed up by the following description that encompasses both the individual brands as realistic, high quality modern eclectic home furnishing brands, that are designed to be used. It provides a full Second Life® experience with the use of natural animations and props that have the active role player in mind. With that being said, both brands are amazing representations of the talented individuals we are so fortunate to have within Second Life®. With these two continuing to design amazing furniture for our homes we can be secure in knowing that our furniture with be in safe, stylish and very functional hands for many years to come. Describe yourself: I am a lover of all things art, music, history, fashion and decor! Why do you Love to Decorate? Decorating is another way I express myself creatively. Trying to explain my love for decor and decorating is not an easy task, I just go where my mind takes me and enjoy the journey. What I really love is when I have a vision and I’m successfully able to execute it. I’ve always lived in my head and sometimes the things I think of literally blow my mind. I’m surrounded by a great support system, who push me in Second Life® but also family and friends that want me to pursue interior decorating in real life as well! Why not?? I am grateful to LTD because I have learned so much in the short year and a half I’ve been here and I’ve grown so much being a part of the team. What is your inspiration for when it comes to decorating? I’m inspired by anything from a colour, a piece of unique furniture or just how I’m feeling that moment/day.

BoysTown ARTICLE BY EDEN TAYLOR / PHOTOGRAPHY BY EDITORIAL CLARITY

I had no idea what to expect the moment I teleported onto the Boystown sim pavement. Within view was a pleasant street adorned with shops, homes, and hidden treasures. Adham Decuir, the Boystown creator and CEO, who could also be rightfully called the brains behind Boystown, or for lack of a better term, the dutiful “Mayor”, greeted me as if we were old friends. The tour began with a stroll across a couple of sims, the view of neatly paved streets were reminiscent to the sidewalks of “Old New York” in Manhattan. The Brownstone windows peek directly into the Sim’s deep blue waters, lined by walkable sidewalks, and street-lights that add a touch of ambiance and character. Each Brownstone emits the style and creativity of the tenants living there. Designs that run the gamut from contemporary to eclectic, with mixes and colors ranging from warm deep blues to soft grey heathers. In 2007, Adham’s real life Chicago radio station began receiving emails from listeners who happened to be part of the Second Life® World. Partying and listening to the station rhythms “inworld”, they did not hesitate to let him know how much they were enjoying the music the station was playing. After numerous excited emails from his Second Life® listeners, curiosity got the best of him, and Adham Decuir rezzed inworld. The sim that is home to many residents, began on one region that was called “North Halsted”. The North Halsted sim was developed by incorporating a group of gay men who are from the real-life Chicago area. The community focused on creating a safe environment for gay men that allowed them to congregate freely and openly. The original North Halsted sim closed down, but the idea was used as the catalyst for Boystown. The now extremely popular community is the home to over three hundred Second Life® Residents. There are 3 main regions “Boystown”, “Boystown West”, and “Boystown East”, all three are open to the public. Boystown continued to expand and now consists of 11 regions. Many of the regions on the estate are privately owned and adorned with beautiful homes. Adham gave his residents the choice of both grass and sand lands for those who want to choose based on personal preference. The Brownstone apartment flats are rental properties, with Beach cabins and bungalows also available. As Second Life® approached its 13th birthday and plans were being implemented to celebrate this grid wide occasion, we were all devastated by the Pulse tragedy where 49 victims were killed in this senseless attack. Adham and I discussed the Pulse tragedy and how Boystown’s citizens handled such an emotionally devastating event, that directly impacted the gay community. Adham says, “There was a sadness throughout the community, and although I was planning on doing something special in Boystown for Second Life’s® thirteenth birthday and contemplating the design layout for SL13B exhibit. I could not continue as planned in lieu of this violent attack. We canceled the parties that were planned immediately, it was no time to party.Iit just felt wrong. I refocused on our exhibit area at SL13B and decided to feature a memorial SL13B”. The exhibit is extremely touching with a candle that stands in place of each of the lives lost on June 12th. The monument names each victim one by one, metaphysically celebrating their lives and spirits. The scene is tranquil in its serenity, yet surreal in nature. You feel the impact of each life by the visual exhibit. Experiences and events such as the Pulse massacre serves as a primary example of why places such as Boystown are needed on the Second Life® Grid. A place that focuses on the acceptance of our beloved Gay Community who still have to face the fact that

ignorance exists in our humanity. A safe place that allows you to exist and enjoy life without apology is not a privilege but a right. Adham explains that, “This virtual community, is not a role-play community, but a community based around real people interacting with each other, with Second Life® as their platform. The events and activities are based off of various common interests amongst us, and he works hard on keeping the activities diverse by staging scenes that cater to the many differences and preferences that you will find strictly within the gay community. Boystown provides something to spark the varying interests of residents and visitors, from bars that play different music genres, to fetish club scenes. He’s been successful in his effort, making sure the different likes and preferences ranging from one end of the spectrum to the complete opposite are tapped into. Adham says “If we do not have it, it is probably something I am working on implementing”! The grid just recently expanded to offer a wonderful retail therapy experience, a roller skating facility with its own one of a kind skating system and skate rental. They added a cosmic bowling alley, that glows in the dark and is quite the experience for those who like to participate in the family friendly sport, for a wonderful time! The facilities can be rented out by guests, visitors and residents for private parties and special occasions. Snacks and goody stands are strategically placed for refreshments. There is free ice-cream, frappuccino, cappuccino, lemonade, and alcoholic beverages, sometimes served by someone with a nice smile. There is a weekly party roster that does not end, from Monday to Friday! They have also established “Annual Celebrations” that include Valentine’s Ball, Boystown Pride, Boystown Prom, Boystown Anniversary, the aforementioned Second Life® Birthday celebration and more! This tastefully designed community filled with carefully manicured lands, non-stop entertainment and events, is a high demand living area. Boystown has a fraternity house for second life players to use if they are in need of a home to log into. Allotting the experienced player an opportunity to pay it forward to new comers who are not familiar with Grid Life. A perfect place for the new resident learning their way around. Within every inch of this sim’s set up, it is evident that the goal and objective is to make everyone who comes to visit feel at home regardless of sexual preference. There’s a sense of oneness that is often times difficult to maintain in communities of this size. Adham and the team that he credits for their hardwork and dedication, never cease to think of ways to make sure things run successfully, constantly introducing fresh ideas that keep Boystown energetic, fresh and new. They all work feverishly to maintain this idea that blossomed into a way of life for this sim. Adham and “The Boystown Team” stress that they want to ensure that the community is open and welcoming to everyone. Adham expressed his sentiments on community life in Boystown by sharing this profound thought, “no one is so rich as to throw away a friend”! A mindset that is becoming more and more scarce across Second Life® and real life when we remember the tragedy that took place in Orlando recently. Boystown has managed to successfully carve the elements of unity, kindness, inclusion, security and friendliness into its very essence. A feat that is to be applauded! Landmarks:

LTD JAN/ FEB 201 6 I SSUE MI DNI GHT WALTZ STYLING BY BAMBI FOXDALE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN GIANT

Describe yourself: I am a fellow Second Life® addict who was fortunate enough to meet amazing creatig people. These amazing people also love to share their passion. One of my best friends Tal taught me how to take pictures in Second Life®. Three years later and I haven’t stopped since. In time I have learned to build sets and my passion grew even more. It is an evolution, and it never stops. A never ending learning process. Why do you Love to Decorate? There is no limit with decoration. In one week I can create a house in the country, a street in New York City, a magical forest and on the way go to a beach in Ibiza or Mexico. The imagination knows no limits. Decoration feeds it.

bambi foxdale

What is your inspiration for when it comes to decorating? I changed. It can be an item that I rezzed and all grew from there. A real life picture is always something I look for. I got addicted to image searching engines. A dream can be an inspiration or a theme. Anything can be an inspiration at the right state of mind.

july / august 2016 - 100 years of decor

Opulence, tradition, the art of turning form and function into something with both meaning and pleasure‌ these are but a few of the things which come to mind when considering decorating with an Asian influence. Is it any wonder that cultures which have survived and thrived for thousands of years would offer a deep and inspiring well to draw from when it comes to interior design? A fusion of many different regions and styles makes this a versatile and exciting inspiration for any home, but where do you start? The core elements of any Asian decor revolve around balance and nature while instilling a sense of peace to those who inhabit the space. Whether you choose to model after the minimalistic zen principles of Japanese design, borrow more from the luxurious opulence of the Chinese, or perhaps you favor the colorful celebration of life which epitomizes classic Indian interior design, there is no shortage of options in Second LifeŽ to cater to your needs. The whole space needs be considered when putting together a room with a chinoiserie feel, for there is no element too small when utilizing this style. Placement of each and every piece you chose to incorporate, should be done with both thought and purpose even if you are not adhering to strict feng shui principles. A neutral color palette themed for nature such as a sandy beige or a brown, a pale blue or an elegant gray, are most typical for setting a calming back drop and tone to begin with. This provides balance to characteristic accents of sumptuous crimson, brilliant gold, or vivacious purple just to name a few traditional choices. Blending textures and patterns is another key element in an oriental themed space. This can be done with the addition of a glass partition, bamboo screens, or a reflecting pool with vibrant koi fish. Similarly, the addition of a traditional printed screen or a plush cushion with a hanzi motif can add character and interest to the overall finished look. Any one or combination of these can truly bring harmony to your space and begin to unify your intended focus. The lighting of a room provides yet another opportunity to introduce the feeling of the far east into a room in creative ways. With options such as delicate hanging lanterns made of paper or silk, tiers of glinting candles or even ornately sculpted chandeliers, there is certain to be something perfect for your Asian space. It is always important to represent nature when adhering to this style though. The presence of a carefully crafted bonsai tree, an intricately woven tatami mat, a flowing water fountain, sculptures made from natural stone or perhaps a painting of a cow in a field are all ways to honor this intrinsic principle. There are truly no end to the options in which to add character and depth of any eastern influenced decor. It should be remembered that an Asian inspiration is meant to be an overall sensual experience. Accents such as ornate incense burners, iconic figurines, an antique urn or delicate wind chimes can bring an exotic and peaceful feeling into your room. There is no detail too small to consider or include when you are creating your very own Asian space. It should be noted at the same time that this design style does not encourage clutter, on the contrary the principles of many of these cultures encourage you to surround yourself only with things you truly love. Understated beauty is often the guiding star for incorporating each and every unique elements and determine how they are placed within the room. (continued on Page 123)

(continued from Page 115)

If the south Asian or Indian design is more what speaks to you, with its vibrant colors and more layered approach to decor, there are a great many ways to honor this vision. Solid wooden furniture is often favored as a perfect counterpoint to combinations of colors like bright orange against vivacious fuchsia or any one of a myriad of jewel tones punctuated by paisley and floral prints. Hanging tapestries depicting mythic scenes and containing such intricate details as beading with shells, tiny appliqued mirrors, and abundant fringe are a stunning feature to add to the spectrum of elements combined for the complete effect. The addition of piles of pillows made from silk or satin with golden thread and contrasting trim are common elements for continuing the mesmerizing display of color this look is known for. Window treatments inspired by the traditional sari can be mirrored in table coverings and bedding to further the celebration of color throughout the space which pays homage to both the past and the present. The use of arches, both in architecture and alcoves provide a unifying feature as well as creating a perfect place to display ornate mirrors and lavish frame with your photographs to include a personalized touch. Finally, including a blending of hand crafted items such as masks and figurines is a perfect way to finish filling a room in which the more is more mentality is employed and can honor both the beauty and the chaos of life. If you are uncertain or unclear as to whether the oriental or ornamental Indian look is right for you and your home, there are simple additions you can make at first to get a sample of this feeling. A few decorative fans or some delicate scrolls upon the walls, a laughing Buddha or Ganesha statue, some figurines made of jade, or even a shoji room divider and some colorful throw pillows will allow you to gauge if this truly is a decor scheme you can live with. The possibilities here are endless, as is the case with so much on the grid. The key behind any Asian look though is to keep in mind the core elements unifying all of these approaches. The guiding elements are balance, nature and purposeful selection and placement for every color, piece of furniture, and unique accessory. At its core, this method of decor is simply about creating a space which instills both joy and peace in all those who enter it. You may choose to create this feeling with a modern and minimalistic approach, or a colorful combination of elements which celebrate life. Perhaps a blending of both these styles will be more to your liking. While the devil is truly in the details when you adopt this choice for interior design, you shouldn’t allow yourself to be intimidated by the prospect. As long as the final result allows you to surround yourself with a space which calms and soothes your soul, you will have crafted the perfect Asian inspiration.

LTD MA R/AP R 201 6 I SSUE SWIMMING POOLS STYLING BY DIVOS TITANIUM PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN GIANT

w

Describe yourself: Divos Titanium is a corn-fed Carolina boy that is deeply rooted in all things southern. He spends a ma jority of his time in real life dabbling in employment law. In world, Divos enjoys spending time with Photoshop and (no suprise!) decorating. He is also Manager of Boystown and Lead Go-Go for BLU Dancebar. Why do you Love to Decorate? It is fun. Pure and simple. So many things we all have going on can be heavy and take our time and energy due to being so rigid and demanding. Decorating allows me to be creative and draw outside the lines whenever I feel the need.

divos titanium

What is your inspiration for when it comes to decorating? I adore creating spaces that feel welcoming. Formal interior can of course be beautiful, but I truly come alive when bringing to life a warm, inviting place that feels like home or a place people want to be. This might explain why I always start every house with decorating the kitchen and have a love for virtual food. Everybody knows that home is where the heart is, so I try to put a little piece of mine in every creation.

LTD MAY/J UNE 201 6 I SSUE COVE R LIFESTYLE STYLING BY LAUREN MINUET PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN GIANT

w

Describe yourself: I joined Second Life® in 2010 and started blogging shortly thereafter. So for nearly 6 years now that has been my main focus here. About 2 years ago, I joined the LTD team until the previous issue I had only been taking photos. I styled my first scene for the magazine and was incredibly honored to have been chosen as the cover image. I have always enjoyed decorating but I over the past year or two I have finally gotten to a point where I am satisfied with my work. Every new project is a chance to grow, learn new things, and improve my skills though. I opened my interior decorating business earlier this year as well. It has been incredibly rewarding and so much fun to be able to decorate for others. Why do you Love to Decorate? I love decorate because it is such a great creative outlet. It’s very rewarding to start with a blank space or room and tell a story through decorating. Each new room or project is a chance to learn or experience something new.

lauren minuet

What is your inspiration for when it comes to decorating? The thing that inspires me the most when it comes to decorating, is all of the beautiful items that store owners create. Without their creations we would have nothing to decorate with in Second Life®. Just a simple item or two can spark an idea in my head for me, to create a new scene that tells a story.

Mexico has such a vibrant history, it’s no wonder Mexican décor is so full of such an array of exciting color pallets. Its indigenous history consisting of the Olmec, Mayan, Toltec, and Aztec Civilizations spanning as far as 100 B.C. Mexican Civilization developed in a chronological order, beginning with “The Olmec Civilization” which is Mexico’s first known society, where most everything on the Gulf Coast near what is known current day as “Veracruz”. The Olmec Civilization is famous for its renowned giant head sculptures that the indigenous carved from native stone. The Olmecs consists of: San Lorenzo, which grew to develop between the years 1200 to 900 B.C., and La Venta in Tabasco lasting until about 600 B.C. After 300 B.C., the villages based on agriculture and hunting sprung up in the Southern half of Mexico. Those Mayan cities featured concentrated shopping centers surrounded by tall Temple Pyramids and Palaces.” Religion was a focal point in Mayan life, and altars were carved with significant dates. Their vast History was recorded by the sculptors and builders in these figures that were also built to resemble human form as well as the divine, like Saint’s and other religious pieces. Mexican design can easily be proven to be a hodgepodge of its rich history that remains prevalent in its modern day existence. You can often find various textured clays used to sculpt pieces that range from furniture to sculptures of different sizes. If you’re familiar with the culture even this small staple in Mexican interior can be directly connected to Olmec Civilizations where clay statues were intricately built centuries ago, that still remain standing today. Homes focusing on honing in on Mexican Design are often traditional in bright colors that overflow with energy and life. The color palettes are symbolic of the essential things that contribute to the survival of the Indigenous. To tap into the pulse of Mexican Design you look for bright colors and shades that create nuances similar to elements that evoke life force. Yellows that mimic the warm rays of the bright sun, to deep blues comparable to a crisp electric sky or energetic deep waters. Elements that are essential to the culture for survival. The science of agriculture thrives from what these colors represent. In this design you also see the different types of woods. Wood is another essential player in Mexican Design. Most authentic Mexican wood furniture is assembled by hand. Mexican wood furniture differs from pine being the cheapest. Mexican cypress is another wood used for building wood furniture in Mexican décor. Alder is more durable and usually used to put together the sturdier components being used when building wood furniture. When these woods are being used for building furniture they are often treated by a process called kiln drying. This prevents cracking and corrosion of the wooden pieces extending its life. Our designers tapped into the many patterns and shades you would find in a Mexican layout. They were able to tap into the playfulness of patterns while avoiding creating a space that is too busy. When creating a space such as this, you can’t be afraid of color, patterns, textures and mid-western elements. Have fun with creating a color scheme and making sure you stick to the primary colors while throwing in other shades that are complimentary. Another great way of creating your favorite space is by simply thinking of your favorite Mexican dishes. Think of the vibrant colors you would (continued on Page 211)

find. From guacamole to salsa, tortilla chips to queso cheese. All of the items mentioned also represent ideas that stimulate a strong design. Each can easily be used in your interior to create a wonderful oasis full of old world Mexican charm. There are endless techniques that can be used to successfully to create a Mexican space comparable to what you would find visiting this wonderfully historic place. Knowing the difference between warm colors and cold colors can be added to our list of tricks! This tip will take you a long way in your efforts to recreate a space that is visually pleasing. The patterns and bright colors will flow cohesively no matter how different the patterns and colors are from one another. If you find yourself color shy but you still want some of that Mexican appeal, design around a specific pattern, choosing one color or maybe two. Our designer shows you how to be bold, courageous and adventurous with colors and patterns. If you’re not able to recreate this beautiful look don’t be discouraged, start small, choose a color that you like from this palette for example, yellow. Design around yellow, adding elements and patterns that work with yellow. Remember, you may not be able to recreate your Mexican space exactly like this one, but this beautiful space can certainly inspire you. Add plants in brightly colored pots, the more plants the better! As earlier stated, a big part of Mexican design is how it taps into the heart of the culture, often times telling a story that only those familiar with the history would understand. There is a story behind every grain of wood, every carving, every color, and pattern which makes it even more amazing to be in the presence of. From its indigenous history to its Spanish influences there’s so much to learn about this Country outside of just the beautiful space that can be created in honor of its exotic appearance. You can make this a fun challenge by creating a version of Mexico that taps into every bit of the culture while still being different. Designing a space allows you to make the interior your canvas. Infusing some of yourself into your design doesn’t break any rules as long as you can stay true to creating the proper ambience associated with the design. So have some chips, guacamole roll up your sleeves, and create your Mexican space!

Describe yourself: I am what I am, I am my own special creatiooooon. Why do you Love to Decorate? Well, I like to take pictures and, of course, a scene/decoration convey a big part of the feeling you have in your mind. I’ll say decorating (or let’s be honest, using someone’s decorating work) serve the final picture. It is like another color of the palette of a painter.

lulu jameson

What is your inspiration for when it comes to decorating? From what I have in mind, my mood, feelings, things I see in general, music, photography... or someone. But to be honest, I can’t say I am good at decorating, I mean, I take pictures. Somehow, when I take pictures of a set, I capture someone’s mind and I like to have this mixed vision of stylist/photographer.

Why do you Love to Decorate? My mom was in charge for home and decor section in one of the female magazine back home in Indonesia, I grew up watching her working on sets with photographer as well as flipping those home decor magazines that she brought home. Second Life® becomes the avenue for me to fulfill some of my childhood imagination of my little dream houses. What is your inspiration for when it comes to decorating? The places I went to in real life as we travel quiet often, the movies I watched, the pages in a magazine or Pinterest.

Food

IANT

designing the perfect dish

“The joy and satisfaction of a meal is equal to the passion and effort given to its presentation.” — Gordon Ramsay

We eat with our eyes first. Think about it. A gorgeous plate of food lands in front of you, bursting with color and precise placement of each component. It is no surprise that photo streams on Instagram, SnapChat or Flickr are filled with tempting, scrumptious food. Sometimes it all looks too pretty to eat. The beauty of creating a pretty plate in Second Life® is you don’t have to ruin it by sticking a fork in to grab a mouthful. Unless the food in question is cake. Cake needs to be admired and then eaten. Anyone else agree? Just me? I digress. Appreciating the beauty of food ignites the senses. Meals can evoke certain feelings — delight, comfort, nostalgia. It is a genuine passion that people love to share with their friends and family, whether preparing something new for dinner or trying to recreate a dish they watched their favorite celebrity chef make on television. I’m an American but my heritage is Italian, so I pretty much grew up in the kitchen watching my mom and other family members cook. It gave me a certain appreciation for food and how to prepare it. And yes, I also appreciate eating it. All of my family events, whether major or not, revolved around food. And wine. In the virtual world, food is just as important. Products in Second Life® have morphed and changed, improved and delighted over the years. As an inspiration to write this article, I took a little foodie tour to see for myself. Fair

warning though. There is a strong possibility I only made it as far as the dessert section. There are so many talented designers inworld who make exquisite, realistic looking food. [ keke ], +Half Deer+ and Jian are just a few that come to my mind immediately. 8f8 also creates stunning food items like a sushi set called Rising Sun Delicates and a full ice cream stand (see? Desserts!) called IceDreams. These are both gatcha sets and can be found at the 8f8 main store. If you’re into more rustic style foods, Apple Fall and Dutchie have some great bread and cheese trays. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention fruits and veggies. Yes, I can tear myself away from the cake for something healthy. Dust Bunny makes an adorable fresh fruit stand filled with bright oranges, apples, blueberries and more. They even have a gatcha set with breakfast items. Guys, we’re talking bacon, eggs, cereal and cinnamon buns. This foodie tour is making me hungry. But somebody has to do it. And so we soldier on. Tres Blah created a divine little set called Soiree with, you guessed it, pastries. I don’t

know about you but I’m going to need about an hour on a treadmill when I’m finished. The influence of using food artistically in the real world can certainly translate to Second Life®. In fact, the possibilities are limitless here. With so many creative minds designing realistic items, residents have a wide variety to mix and match, creating beautiful color gradients with fruits, vegetables, breads, meats, anything you want. Clearly, I didn’t see all there is to offer in my little foodie tour. I urge you to spend some time exploring. The list of bakeries, restaurants and massive food emporiums is endless. You’re sure to find items that best suit what your home or business decor needs might be. And while you’re out there, by all means take a break and have some cake. LTD MAY/J UNE 201 5 I SSUE FOCUS ON STYLING BY ROOKY YOOTZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELVI HARTLEY

Describe yourself: I’m usually quiet, when I’m with friends I’m more outgoing. I’m told I’m funny, weird, snarky. I’m Canadian which makes me super cool and stuff. Why do you Love to Decorate? I find it fun, it’s always been fun for me to do something like decor. I started with architecture in an emphasis course in high school, I loved designing homes, then I got into decorating the homes I designed and found that even more fun so It kind of stuck. I started in The Sims with decorating and drooled over furniture and decor catalogs before I started in Second Life®.

rooky yootz

What is your inspiration for when it comes to decorating? Mostly I get inspiration when I look online, HGTV, Pinterest, and so on. Sometimes I just throw things out for fun with no set ideas.

LTD MAY/J UNE 201 6 I SSUE LITTLE BRANCH ARTICLE BY VICTORIA BRINNER STYLING BY WENDZ TEMPEST PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN GIANT

w

Describe yourself: Aside from being Time Magazine’s ‘Person of the Year’ in 2006, I’d say I’m just your average girl-next-door. Most of the time you can find me writing, exploring or having silly conversations with friends. If you ever see me in-world, please don’t be shy. Say hello! Why do you Love to Decorate? For me, decorating is a way to express my personality in my own home. Whether in Second Life® or real life, I try to put as much of ‘me’ in my decor as possible. Decorating in Second Life® is also a great way to experiment with colors and themes to see what best suits me. And, of course, it gives me a fantastic excuse to go out and buy as many items as I can find.

victoria brinner

What is your inspiration for when it comes to decorating? I’ve always had a soft spot for rustic decor. Anything that evokes winter or being snuggled up in a warm cabin or lodge somewhere in the snowy mountains makes me smile. I also really love the rich look of cosmopolitan luxury. Marrying those two styles together has been so much fun. And thank goodness Pinterest has a zillion examples to scroll through for inspiration.

Make It You

ur Own:

diy dreamcatchers STYLING BY ELVI HARTLEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELVI HARTLEY

Instructions... ARTICLE BY ELVI HARTLEY / STYLING BY ELVI HARTLEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELVI HARTLEY Sometimes a headboard can be too boring for a bedroom, so why not spice it up by making your own special headboard. For this, I have created a DIY Dreamcatcher. I used the fol l owing items: Branch: Twinkling Lights Log B y Keke Frame: Cross Stitch B y Fetch Step 1 . Your ultimate goal is to find something you can use to hang, it can be anything as long as it is a pole. You can do a mix and match of string/lights as long as you have something going down to use for the frames to be placed on. Step 2. I used the frames from Fetch because it had the Cross Stitch feel to it which I felt was perfect. I did modify the frame to make it more circular, the frames from Fetch do come with slogans but I had decided to customise what I wanted in the frames.

1.

You can adjust the size of the frames by going into build and resizing it from the menu. Step 3. Make a few copies of the frames because you will want a few. Do them in different sizes so they all do not look the same. Step 4. Bring your pole with strings and begin to place the frames at different lengths/placements. Then, viola you have your very own DIY dreamcatcher. The one used an as example is only 11 land impact, depending on size it can be less or more.

*due to lights on branch we had to use a darker background to show.

Why do you Love to Decorate? Decorating for me is first and foremost, therapeutic. I love the process in both worlds, using placement and techniques to create surroundings that engage the people you love. What is your inspiration for when it comes to decorating? My inspiration solely comes from places I’ve visited in real life and more often than not, my own neighborhood.
