Hello again! What an exciting and eventful time it has been for us as we transition from Spring to Summer! We recently hosted the 2017 LTD AWARDS and what an amazing response it had from the public. Our mission since our launch in 2014 has always been to promote and give recognition to the amazing talents in Second Life Home & Garden. The awards gives YOU the chance to have your opinion heard. A huge congratulations from the entire LTD team goes to the winners and a big thank you to you, the reader, for participating and making it happen! Summer is always an exciting time, not only for us, but for Second Life in general. We are thrilled and excited to have been asked by the Marfa Contemporary to hold an exhibit at the gallery. LTD, THE EXHIBIT - Art of Home, is a photo exhibit showcasing some of the best works publishing in the magazine from 2014 to today, and is open to the public from May 23 - July 1. LTD would not be what it is today without the amazing talents that are part of our team past and present. It is an honor for us to be able to show off these works for the public and I hope you get to go and see it! In the May/June 2017 Issue, we have some wonderful features, including the return of The Art Scene, our Blogger spotlight Ricardo Morsch, plus our featured designer, DaD Design. The scene created by Britain Knave for this issue is going to be open for the public to visit after publication, so be sure to go and visit! All of this, plus amazing interior set ups for you to get some Summer inspiration. We hope you enjoy this read and as always,

may / june 2017 - editor’s note
R... Half-time. . . Didn’ t I write my last editor's note yesterday? It feels like it. Sometimes, I feel that a whole week has passed by after only blinking once. Well, obviously, it does not but this feeling never leaves. And I don’ t like it, especial if my Real Life is so packed that I can’ t enjoy the leftover time I have for myself. So yeah, this time of the year, is always a busy one. I think our stylists can agree, which makes me even more happy that they found time again to make such beautiful setups for this May / June issue. Our featured designer for this issue is DAD Design and let me say, our Stylist Britian Knave did an amazing job to showcase their beautiful creations. And with that said, we also visited the Vordun Gallery and Museum for our Art Feature and went to the Butterfly Conservatory which is a very informative Place to see, something unusual from most sims. Our Family staff were thrown back to before school times and the rest of the staff put their creativity in masculine bathrooms, kitchens, breakfast feasts, outside dining and much more. But have a look for yourself and keep on browsing. And the next issue will be July / August, i hope till then you all will enjoy your summertime and be well, until next time. Like always, thanks to everyone for your constant support.

DaD
Design is run by Sheerpetal Roussel, a lovely Italian lady, who's been in Second Life速 for ten years. Her partner, Rod, and CSR, Marcus, are very much part of the team. We all met up at the new LTD Office for a coffee and chat. Rod ably translated, and between us all, we came up with some interesting conversation about Second Life速, the virtual universe and DaD Design. DaD stands for Domus Aurea Design, Latin for Golden House, and that's most appropriate, seeing as much of Sheer's work now centers on producing houses, although she's designed plants and furniture in addition to prefabs. Ten years of building must have seen plenty of changes. Sheer remarked that the scenario had changed dramatically, especially with the advent of mesh. Shifting from prims to mesh has meant a lot of hard work and sleepless nights for her, and she took almost a year off designing to learn about using mesh in builds. It was a big learning curve but with lots of patience and curiosity it came right. Every day she learns something new, and that's a continuous process. "I can't say that it was simpler to work with prims, but I'm quite sure that mesh allows for higher levels of creativity. Prims allowed me to build outstanding creations and in some ways the knowledge has given me an essential understanding even today where I mainly work with mesh." Sheer uses the Maxon Cinema4D and Abode Photoshop for building, these programs are indispensable. She never got on with Blender although she tried hard to understand it. She also uses some minor software but the main job is done with those two programs. Sheer uses the Maxon Cinema4D and Abode Photoshop for building, these programs are indispensable. She never got on with Blender although she tried hard to understand it. She also uses some minor software but the main job is done with those two programs. We talked about Sheer's inspiration for design. She's passionate about architecture, design and art back in Real Life, and this has had quite a strong influence when it comes to designing in Second Life速. "Building is an act of creativity in which you externalize what you have in your mind and in your heart. It is a way to materialize ideas, dreams, sensations." The Second Life速 designer who Sheer admires the most is Sergio Botha (Botha Designs) who produces prefab houses and landscape elements. His style is one of clean lines and open interiors using glass and wood extensively. Besides that, she's very open to the suggestions of her clients and she spends lots of time reading and analysing reviews of her work. She sees this as being quite normal for anyone who sells products online, the feedback is like a final and decisive judgement on a product. When she goes to create a project she tries to see things as a user of that product might, and not necessarily as a designer. She likes to create homes that are viable and give a really thorough immersive experience. "Yes, I know that this could seem quite pretentious, but it is what I do. I look at pictures in architectural magazines and at some point, suddenly, the right one comes to mind. I imagine myself in the house. In that moment. I have no idea if the house is going to be a best seller or not. There is not a super in depth marketing analysis in my products. Instinct is what drives my actions more."

ARTICLE BY MOZART LOORDES / STYLING BY BRITAIN KNAVE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN GIANT We agreed that building is a complex job and if there's no passion or conviction in the process, then the buildings would never get finished. Sheer says that there's a certain amount of madness too, sometimes! Talent is not enough; the prospective builder also needs patience and tenacity. I asked Sheer if she had a favorite product, maybe something she'd struggled with and won. She replied that it would be the one she hasn't built yet! Joking aside, she likes all the things she builds. Some of them required a super hard job because they were so complex and needed effort. Those were the builds that were stressful, to say the least. The DaD sim is a delightful area to wander around. This has undergone some changes over the years but the present style is the result of a basic idea, to create a shop that doesn't look like a shop. It's much more of a little village made up of the houses, plants and furniture that Sheer has built since she started. In some ways, it is also like a museum of what she's achieved. In terms of space, it is quite consuming, but worth the effort, because customers seem to appreciate the houses and the styling that Sheer's friends, Marcus and Britain Knave, have done in decorating the houses. Many of the ideas used, put the plants and furniture in the best settings possible and in this way, it helps customers visualize how the product would look on their own land. Of course, it is also great then to copy and further those ideas as a first step towards creating an individual decorating style. Marcus is the Customer Service Representative for DaD Design, he is also a good friend of Sheer's and often comes up with innovative ideas that she had not tried before. Recently, it was to go the route of collaboration at Events. The first one of these was at the April Shiny Shabby Event, where DaD Design collaborated with Dead Dollz, Astralia and Gabriel on a tennis theme. DaD Design came up with a wonderful tennis court. Sheer said that for a first-time experience, it turned out really well and that she would be open to more collaborations in the future. Some of the main pointers in collaboration were to define the different tasks of work so that everybody knew what they were doing, and to develop a friendly and trustful relationship in which ideas could flourish. Sheer's partner, Rod, also has a pivotal role. He is close to Sheer (they are best friends in Real Life) and he both inspires and supports her. It is not a simple task for him because Second LifeÂŽ Event deadlines are very strict. It was Rod's idea to build the tennis court back in February and to make the first DaD Design video. He learned the day before how to make a video in Second LifeÂŽ and had much fun doing it. There will be more videos in the future because they show customers what the houses really look like, as Sheer says, there is no hiding in videos, the product is exactly as you see it.

My last question was; can a house be masculine or feminine, can it appeal more to one gender than the other. Rod remarked that at least 70/80% of the houses were sold to women. Sheer did not like to make her houses too feminine but she did like to create houses that were liveable and accessible. She loves architecture and she also likes to change style when she creates modern houses. So, in some ways she thought that her houses were more masculine in that they had straight lines and were very dry. They also had lots of animations and poses which might interest men more - we laughed at this point. One of things that define DaD Designs houses is that they have lots of windows. Sheer loves windows because she has a type of claustrophobia but this has worked to her advantage in that people love to stay in open places and not closed ones. For instance, folks might enjoy decorating the house, and then they will live outside. All the windows in a DaD Design house will give that outside/inside feeling, it is a bit of a trademark. Later, we teleported to a platform on the DaD Design sim where stylist, Britain Knave, had laid out a wonderful set of decorated houses, gardens, swimming pool and tennis court, even a small beach - everything done with care and attention to detail in a most creative fashion. It really told a story and was all ready for the photography that accompanies this article. Over 70% of the items used are Sheer's creations. Walking around this platform you get such a great idea of how you could use the DaD Design products and indeed, Sheer is going to allow public access to the platform for a week after publication of this article. So, enjoy, and don't forget to check out the main store little village where you'll see all of the DaD Design products and decorating ideas. Sheer would like to take this opportunity to thank both Rod and Marcus for all their support because without these two she could not make anything - so it is a big personal "Thank you!". At Home When decorating your Second Life® home, it is always important to ensure that you are getting the best value and living space for your prim allowance. To this end there is a need to make sure that the décor you choose is both functional and stylish as well as inclusive of your vision for your home. Even in a Virtual World such as Second Life®, Kitchens have quickly become more than just the area we cook. The kitchen of today serves many purposes often acting as the main family living space during Roleplay, a play area with the use of the various poses around as well as an informal dining room for family time or even a home office. As a result, it is just as important to consider the design for this space in aesthetic terms as it is in more functional terms. When it comes to the function of the kitchen, in Second Life® especially, this is not an element most would consider. While we do not traditionally stand in front of a hot stove to provide a family meal, for some, this aspect of Roleplay ensures a much more realistic experience. And while we cannot all be a Jamie, Gordon or Nigella, with the advances and the work of some of the best mesh designers around, you too can create the impression of being a goddess or master of the kitchen. Kitchens are seen as the heart of a home and should be a relaxing and welcoming space – a space you feel good in. Even in Second Life® this is exceptionally important whether you are an avid role-player or not.
I am especially a big fan of island bars making sure you have lots of space as well as the perfect location for casual entertaining or family time and making the most of your prims available by keeping it simple with a few well-chosen accessories. You want to ensure that you find comfortable looking chairs for your island to make the space look welcoming and inspire people to linger and visit so you can really utilize this space in your Second Life® home. When designing and working on your own kitchen, materials and textures will dictate the glamour and mood you are ultimately establishing. Reflective surfaces, glass, wood and marble should all be thought of individually but also in the vision of the room together. All the textures and colors you use should be playing off and working together to create a space that is both visually appealing and interesting to the eye. While not an essential space in Second Life®, kitchens are very much the center hub in a home and does require careful planning to ensure it fits within prim limits while still following your design scheme and function for your own Second Life® whether looking for a place to play with your significant other, Roleplay with your family or even living out your own MasterChef dreams.

Spot On B
logging, in the world of Second Life®, has virtually become an industry in its own right. With residents flocking to stores and events, creating looks and sets; then showcasing everything in one or more photos. This is the basic premise of blogging; what people do with their blog is up to them. Ricardo Morsch is one of those bloggers; who has superseded what is expected of blogging in Second Life®. Ricardo, like many other bloggers, likes to mix different ways of creating his images. Even going as far as mixing clothing and set pieces to almost make a new creation altogether. That, paired with his constant photographic styling of an almost lived in, slightly messy, harmonious, artistic viewpoint. Messy, in the best way possible I may add. From his inception into Second Life®, Ricardo had always had an eye for style and creating images through whatever medium he could. Ricardo has been around Second Life® for roughly five years, and almost as soon as he entered the grid; he took a break. Not feeling creatively fulfilled by the limitations at that time in Second Life®. It wasn’t until a few years ago that he returned to a way more advanced system in Second Life®, that would allow him to create images how he wanted too originally. One of those improvements he found was the aesthetics of the avatars.
He was able to create a more realistic avatar to feature in his images; and of course, these images translated into his blog. Someone can only manipulate and edit a photo for so long before it comes something totally different. And the point to blogging isn't to have totally perfect images that look to be something other than they are. Changing a blog photo changes what the image itself is, to the point, items featured are no longer recognizable. That is an issue, and one that Ricardo never wanted to face. His skills with photography came partly from real-life experience and partly just from trial and error with blogging. Even before Second Life®, editing photos through Adobe Photoshop was just a hobby for him. Practicing editing an image really built up his skills. Ricardo told me that he never questions his photographic skills, just wanted the graphic element of Second Life® to catch up to what he would like to see visually. Once the conditions were just right for him to start his blogging career, he took his chance and create his first blog post. Initially Ricardo just wanted to have a blog that would feature male fashion; a key pillar in why his blog became so popular. During this interview, Ricardo recounted exactly what his first post was about.

“I just created an avatar look and take the picture at Neva's Villi. My initial idea for my blog was just create male fashion posts; but later I felt that I needed more, and this made me create some scenes for my blogposts,”. Creating a scene brought about yet another key pillar for his blog, which would be interior design. In the beginning, like Ricardo mentions, he went to photographic sims to do his images for his blog. Going to places all around the grid, but when a location didn't meet what he wanted. Implementing the interior design came into play. Why Ricardo decided to fuse those two key pillars together? He said that it just felt right to him, and needed to happen to bring him to the next level with his blog. Which, I’m sure, nobody will complain about. Have you seen some of his blog posts? How creative and realistic they can be. So many of his posts have a sense of realism and action, yet simply just being a single frame of a bigger story. What is great about Ricardo’s storytelling abilities with his blog; he can bring in other influences and stories and mix them with his own. One facet of Ricardo’s blog that I personally love, is that he tried to create some of his blog posts with popular television in mind. One blog post, “Run It!” is inspired by the popular AMC television show, “The Walking Dead”. When I asked him about this, he noted that he tries to bring certain characters from shows to his blog. This was something I never really saw a lot from blogs. I think it just adds a bit of nostalgia to those who have an affinity to television characters. We continued to talk about blogging, in a broader sense and we got to the topic of his own personally favorite posts he had done. One, “Uncrowded Places” is his most favorite blog images he had ever done. The composition of the avatar, how the lighting is and how everything in the image makes for a harmonious image. Another of his favorite posts would be one that he titled, “Bound Forever”, which features his wife. This is the first time that he asked her to be in one of his blog posts, and having the person he loves the most in the world in an image he created. That meant the world to him. To end our interview, Ricardo wanted to give those who might be interested in blogging some sage advice. “Just try to do your best. No matter the difficulties, just try! If you want to be great in one thing you need to work hard on that and don't give up on your dreams, because one day they become true. Always try to do better than last time. I think like that and If I can do this, I'm sure you are capable to do even better than me.” On the horizon for Ricardo, he is looking forward to just continuing one with his journey in blogging. Pushing himself even more to share his creativity and taste in both male fashion and interior design. Bring about a more robust attitude toward blogging and just keep having fun with what he is doing. Blogging is an amazing avenue many creative people can take to further their own personal creativity. Each of you, the readers, can be just as creative and expand your own personal talents with blogging.

Art Scene A
s I teleported on the grounds of The Vordun Museum and Gallery, I was instantly transported to one of those high-end museums from a busy city on any given day. It was the picturesque image of what a museum should be. The perfectly trimmed hedges that lined a cobblestone pathway, up several steps. All leading to this grand entrance of The Vordun Museum. When you first walk into this building, a nice older woman on your right will offer you a HUD that attached almost instantly to your screen. This HUD is your key to entering the immersive world that Jake Vordun created with his museum. I walked into the Main Gallery that houses a plethora of gilded framed paintings set against dark navy blue walls. The vaulted ceiling gave so much space to this gallery that I literally felt that I was in real-life for a second again. Jake greeted me at the entrance of the museum and started by showing me the main gallery; filled with realistically sized paintings done by a variety of European painters. Jake explained that he wanted this museum to feel as realistic as possible, starting with the sizing of everything. He scaled everything to life size by taking the real-life measurements of the frames and converting them to meters in Second LifeÂŽ. That kind of eye for detail just shows how much passion Jake has for this world of art. As we started our tour, he instructed me to pre-load the HUD that was attached to my screen. The HUD is like those audio devices that real-life museum use for their audio tours; The Vordun Museum is no different. As the audio started, an older British gentleman began to speak. Jake informed me that he had hired a voice actor to be the voice of the museum. To explain what each painting housed in the Main Gallery was, and who painted it. The audio would also give you some backstory on each painting too.

That kind of blew my mind as I had never seen this kind of real-life simulation in Second Life® before. As the man spoke through the HUD, he was telling me all about the painting I was zoomed in on. Another feature that Jake told me about was that I could have some classical music playing along with the narration, to add yet another layer of an authentic museum experience. In total, I believe there are roughly 30 paintings that Jake was able to bring into this virtual space. That meant there are 30 paintings the people can experience and learn about. As the tour progressed, Jake explained that many of the paintings are from “European Masters: 300 Years of Painting”. Several of the paintings in the Main Gallery are from artists from between 1500 and 1799. Many of these artists I had never heard of, but now I know where I can learn more about each of them. A few times, Jake would show me certain pieces in this exhibition that came from his personal collection. One piece, “A Bull in a Meadow with Goats by a Tree”, is a painting from the Golden Ages, done by Albert Jansz. Klomp. Another piece from his personal collection is miniature portrait called, “Portrait of a Woman”, done by William Grimaldi. I was taken aback when he told me about these pieces. I found it it’s quite common for people to auction or sell art pieces. I never really thought about that aspect of the art world before. I guess this is how people curate works of art like Jake has. As we finished the tour of the European Masters, Jake took me into the North Wing of the museum. There, is a collection of personal postcards Jake had received from around the world. This exhibit, called “Sincerely Yours”, features postcards Jake had exchanged with some people from around the world. Just as in the Main Gallery, this collection used a HUD system that would zoom in on the postcards you clicked. You would be able to read what was written and the conversation they had. Each piece also showed the front and back of the postcard. On the entrance wall, there is a blurb about a website called, “Postcrossing”, Jake used. “Sincerely Yours” to give a small glimpse into whoever’s life he is communication with. This collection is just a small portion of all the postcards he has received and sent out. When I was in that gallery, to me, the world didn't seem as big as it felt previously. Once I explored this exhibit for a bit, Jake took me to the South Wing, housing another exhibit called, “Remission”. As I panned my camera around the room, I noticed a familiar name. Jake told me that these black pencil drawings were done by Mikel Monk. These hand-drawn works are images of the human condition, frozen in place during the throes of recovery. What a powerful statement on humankind, and how fragile life can be. I think this is my favorite room, just purely based on the emotions this room can stir.

Lastly, Jake brought me to the “#Winning” exhibit, which is a partnership with The Arcade. The winners of The Arcade’s photography contest are showcased in this room, dating back to the start of the Arcade. The first-place winners were situated in the center of the room, with second and third place winners ringing the perimeter of the room. So many great photographers are featured in this room, and so well deserved too. We ended our tour with a stop to the most important of all places of a museum, and that would be the gift shop. Whenever Jake goes to a new city, he told me, that the first thing he does is go to a museum and visit their gift shop. This gift shop offers just as much insight into a museum as any real-life museum would. There are gallery books about the exhibits that have been featured at the Vordun Museum so far. Along with posters, clothing and other knickknacks that one might want as a souvenir from a visit to a museum. As Jake was showing me around the gift shop, he wanted to show me the Postcard section on one of the walls. I found this activity so charming and totally on par with the branding of his museum. What these postcards offer is a bit of real-life form of communication. These postcards allow you to send one out to a friend in Second Life®. As if you were mailing someone an actual postcard. The tour had now concluded, and I was so thrilled and inspired by this amazing place Jake created. Everything in the Museum, Jake created from scratch. From the framing around the paintings, to the items in the gift shop, were all made by Jake. Every inch of passion that Jake could give to The Vordun Museum and Gallery, he gave. This is his passion in both his real life and in Second Life®. He went on to tell me about the number of messages he has gotten from people thanking him for creating The Vordun Museum and Gallery. Because they may not have access to museums in their real lives, or never been to one period. This place opened their eyes to what art can offer to us, and Jake just wants to spread that love and passion around. He is hoping that one day, he can create a sim that is totally dedicated to the museum and support other Second Life® artists too. In the more relatively nearer future, Jake is looking to open another new and exciting exhibit for people to experience. Visit The Vordun Museum & Gallery today.
