Is it Fall already? It is hard to believe that we only have 2 issues left of 2016, this one included of course. We at LTD have never been for sticking with stereotypical themes for the seasons. This will not be an issue full of falling leaves, golden trees and orange decor. In fact, it is the complete opposite. While Fall has arrived, in Second LifeÂŽ we can still enjoy the beauty of all seasons, no matter what it is outside of your real life window. We are delighted in this issue to feature SAYO and KEKE, two brands really rocking the home decor market. We also have some stylish and inspirational designs by our wonderful styling team. Whether you are decorating for fall or not, there is something for everyone in this issue of LTD. We hope you enjoy reading and we cannot wait to see you for our final issue of 2016 in November! As always, love to decorate!

R... Fall into fall. . .

t’s finally here; pre-Christmas time and we haven’ t even had Halloween. Groceries and malls are all swamped with Christmas sweets, and pumpkin whatever-is-possible things. From decorations, to food, you can’ t have one city stroll without every store throwing autumnal things into your face. Orange has become the only known color, and for god’s sake, there are no other vegetables than pumpkin. Don’ t get me wrong, I like autumn, and Christmas, and this time of the year, but society and the economy make this season so overwhelming - that I can get pretty annoyed. I personally can’ t take it all anymore, so I have my own four bare walls, free of decorations. It feels good to have that “clean zone” where I can decide what I want to do and have. And if I look into Second Life®, there it is the same – “seasonal overload”. Luckily here too; I have my personal place where I can avoid all of this. And with that said, it is the big reason I look forward to the September / October Issue of LTD. Sure you could assume we maybe would do an Autumn issue, but - hello, it isn’ t even October yet, so we decided to go a different direction. Very differently decorated balconies almost give a little reflection on the slowly passing summer, with the New Land spread on the Topic “Tuscany”. And even if it isn’ t an autumn issue - our Living In feature could remind you a little about this season; with its dark green and violet colors. But like always there is so much more… Our lifestyle feature, will show you lovely wedding places, the Living on Screen spread that welcomes Penny Dreadful® inspired setups and so much more. And before I forget I would love to mention our featured Designers: Kaysha Piers of SAYO and Kean Kelly of Keke. I am so happy that both ladies could make time with our lovely writers to answer our questions and tell us about their visions and creating. And like always, a big thank you to all of you dedicated readers who make us grow each issue. I hope you enjoy the sights filled by the creativity of our talented staff.

TIVE DIRECTOR... A cozy time of the yearâ&#x20AC;Ś

utumn, the season of change, love and harvest. Being one of my favorite times of the year, It makes me think of long days seated in the corner of a warm, quiet coffee shop. A time where the trees are colored with warm tones, and smells of evergreen, cinnamon and pumpkins fill the air. All the signs of autumn are closing in on us, engulfing us in its warmth. For me, this autumn also officially marks two years I have been with Love to Decorate Magazine. I am amazed at how things have changed in such a short amount of time. For this edition, the stylists and photographers were challenged with bringing the airy summer's end and the crisp breeze of fall together harmoniously. Embracing the light breezes and romantic sunsets of the outdoors, to offer a tranquility that can sooth the soul and relax the mind. A goal was set amongst the stylists; making them reach outside of their comfort zones to bring something truly unique and courageous to their style of decorating. Behind the lens of Love to Decorate Magazine, there is an amazing team of stylist, decorators, photographers and creators who make each and every shoot happen. Attention to detail, dedication, and lots of time are put into each and every page, making it visually appealing to the reader. Take a look...and you will see.

There are three types of people in Second Life®. The first are those that do not have a home and depend on public sandboxes for rezzing privileges; the second is residents that have their own home but tend to decorate and walk away and only change things when they buy something really amazing. The third types consist of people who change their home furnishings frequently and usually with regularity, often ensuring it becomes part of their weekly routine. Obviously the latter is generally the kind that designers can depend on to put their children through college and can usually be spotted at every shopping event on the grid or just off the little overflow side of the Arcade as the doors open.

definitely tend to identify with type number two. I like to set up my house up as I like it and only change it when I either have to move, fall in love with a new home or find that must have item. Regardless of your own preference it is important to ensure that the furniture you choose is your own individual style and functional to your needs. With so many different designers out there creating amazing items, the choices in décor available to you is huge with some very well known brands still continuing to provide Second Life® residents with some of the most amazing and realistic furniture and décor items. KEKE is definitely a well known brand within Second Life® and has been featured at various events around the grid including Collabor88 and The Arcade. With somewhat more of a focus on smaller décor items rather than the larger furniture pieces, this brand has been established as one of the most creative and quality focussed on the grid. With such creative skill and talent, I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet with Kean Kelly to get insight into the KEKE brand and talk about the décor items she specializes in. KEKE was named by the designer Kean Kelly using the first two letters of her first and last Second Life® name. Coming from Scandinavia, Kean has a background in design and joined Second Life® after reading about it in a magazine. With a Masters in Graphic Design, Kean first started working under the KEKE brand making big prim houses. After having some of her homes featured in the movie “My avatar and Me”, the design bug really bit. With the advances in technology, she has continued to upskill and learn mesh with the help of YouTube tutorials. After a brief break due to not enjoying working with sculpties, Kean states that it took her 6 weeks to make her first mesh item – a flower tea tin. It was a definite successful first step into her own mesh décor making journey. Coming from a Real Life design background and through the use of the internet, Kean uses programs such as Blender, Sculptris, Marvelous designer and Photoshop drawing ideas from various sources such as Pinterest and items seen around her everyday life. She is continually working to improve on her own skills and considers designers around Second Life® such as Vespertine, Apple Fall and Junk as some of her personal and professional motivators. While her own learning curve has most definitely been very steep, Kean is committed to continuing to move with technological advances within Second Life® and ensuring her items continue to be as mainstream and functional as possible for the general population. Her most valuable advice for other new designers looking to get into their own stores and events would be to “bite through all the obstacles and be super determined and never doubt your own style and be unique because if you like it someone else

will too. And remember it is meant to be fun because how you feel about what you made will reflect.” When walking into the KEKE store, it is very easy to find something you like and could use in your own home. Kean describes her own personal style as Nordic and “light and minimal with a lot of colourful silly accents” but due to her own curiosity she has been able to create items that suit any design taste within Second Life®. She enjoys the outdoors and nature and identifies her favorite creations to be her Bug Rings and Garden chairs because she never “tires of looking at them”. KEKE items can currently be seen in various high profile events around Second Life ensuring but Kean is quick to admit that she has had a helping hand at times along the way. She credits Kamelia Snowfield, creator of Chapter Four in 2013 as being her own introduction into events as well as the defining moment for KEKE as a serious brand. When asked what we can expect to see coming up for KEKE, Kean is careful not to reveal too much stating “we will have to just see what happens”. She feels that she is changing with the times and does not plan ahead too much instead relying on her instincts and curiosity. However, I was fortunate to get a little information into a possible future project from her during the interview concerning some possible collaborations including one with Amelie from Vespertine. Kean has expressed a definite interest in this collaboration describing Vespertine style as “funky and very interesting” so we definitely need to watch this space to see what happens! Generally, it can be easy to forget that designers are just normal people like you and me, who are working hard to make their own legacy within Second Life®. I was fortunate to be reminded of this fact again through my meeting of Kean Kelly. The style, grace, humility and sense of humor she exudes is impressive. While she is already creating beautiful items, she is still committed to getting better and to continue making our Second Life® homes beautiful with her décor designs. It is very easy to see why KEKE has been so successful with the commitment and creativity she has shown in projects in both Second Life® and Real Life. Informations and Links: • • • •

“If you aren’t challenged and put in uncomfortable places, you aren’t growing. And for me that’s unacceptable,” Kaysha Piers said with the type of confidence and enthusiasm that seems to follow her wherever she goes.

he creator and designer behind SAYO is a bundle of chic, cosmopolitan energy that glows with pride when she talks about her love and passion for building. We sat comfortably in her richly textured Wynwood Suspension Chairs in her temporary in-world pop-up shop late one Friday night, casually chatting about everything from bad hair days to massive ‘to-do’ lists. “I’ve been creating ever since I started on Second Life®. I remember it, some 7 or 8 years ago, my first skill was building. I’m a very spatial thinker, so it came natural to me.” One look at anything Kaysha has designed and built and it’s clear just how natural her abilities are. Whether it’s the stunning Geodes Crown and Staff Set that she sold during August’s Wizard of Oz themed round of Enchantment or the super fun ‘We Love the 90’s’ gacha set at September’s Versus Event, it is clear Kaysha has found her niche and hit her stride. “Out of all the stores I’ve ran, this is by far my favorite. I’m so sure of my vision, direction and I love the name. It’s my comfort zone. it is short for sayonara, which means goodbye in Japanese.” Kaysha’s journey as a designer in Second Life® follows a path similar to other creators. She’s had a myriad of stores, ideas, visions and directions. After some setbacks and successes in the fashion world, she decided to throw herself fully into making decor and furniture. And that is where it all fell into place. “It just seemed like a great fit for me. I actually developed a passion for it.” Those chairs I mentioned that we were sitting in? Kaysha says she saw them on Pinterest and just had to make them. “Usually I end up on architecture sites looking for modern architecture but Pinterest is just so convenient! I can get instant inspiration immediately and put together boards of awesomeness. I just love it!” It is so easy to get swept up into her enthusiasm. Kaysha is quite focused on her vision for SAYO. Her todo list is so huge, it is the size of a wall. I’m completely serious. It was sitting behind us on her build platform so it was kind of hard to miss. “Even though I’m taking September ‘off’ it is still super large!” She laughed. “It totally keeps me focused and on track, otherwise I’d lose my mind. Honestly, that’s my saving grace because I can procrastinate sometimes and it helps me to say ‘OK you’ve got work to do’. It helps motivate me and keep me consistent.” Her upcoming projects for autumn sound absolutely amazing. I could feel the excitement bubbling from her when she started listing off all the upcoming events SAYO will be appearing in, plus the launch of her brand new in-world store. Kaysha said she hopes to have the store completed by October.

“I absolutely love making decor. I feel like it is totally the path for me and I can’t wait to expand it into all the ideas I have in my head, on paper, sketches, Pinterest boards! I work creatively in real life and in Second Life® and sometimes it is hard to control all my ideas at once. Sometimes they hit me in the most normal of places; the shower, bed, at the gym, driving. I really found my happy place in decor on Second Life®.” The main store will feature primarily home decor but Kaysha also told me she’s working on a new line called SAYO Dark, which will be a mixture of dark-themed clothing and furniture. She says there will be a section of the store dedicated to SAYO Dark. “I love working with dark themes,” she said. “My board on Pinterest is pretty killer for it and making these complex items is always a challenge.” We started talking about all things autumn, which is her favorite time of year, and Kaysha was nearly bursting at the seams telling me about one new gacha project she’s working on. “I found this amazing converted barn near where I live and I just have to make it. It’ll be a mix of fall and Halloween items centered around this barn. It is just amazing and I can’t wait to make the items for inside and out.“ One of the first houses I ever bought in Second Life® was a converted barn so my interest skyrocketed while we talked about her plans for the barn she’s building. “It is super modern and chic, too. All white with wood accents.” I could picture it completely in my mind. And then she mentioned it is going to have industrial farm lights on the outside. For me personally, this gacha set can’t come fast enough. One of the great things I noticed about Kaysha as we chatted for this interview was how confident she is in every idea she has for SAYO. She’s not influenced by what others think she should be designing. While she appreciates their suggestions, Kaysha told me she’s just trying to stay true to herself when she starts a project.

so much that I just don’t want to make anything. I make things I like and love and would love to have in real life, and even things I do own! I’m so happy with where I’m at in life, surrounded by art and things I love that make me who I am.” And that means challenging and pushing herself to create products that are far outside her comfort zone, too. “I’ve been a bit nervous about making full-on houses. I mean with stores like Trompe L’oeil and Roost for example, they kill it! it is a bit daunting. I’m a contemporary modernist at heart, so I’ll see these Frank Lloyd Wright inspired buildings and I want so much to make them. I think I’m slowly overcoming my fear that people may or may not like my work. Right now my largest challenge is clothing. I think I got a bit scared from rigging that it pushed me away from it completely but I’m slowly trying to tap into it but in a very limited sense.” Talking with Kaysha about her passion for design was truly invigorating. Even with a few nerves here and there about future projects, she definitely has a solid vision for the path SAYO is currently on. She has everything lined up for a successful run as she surges forward with innovative ideas and the new main store. A common sentiment I’ve heard from a number of designers is how appreciative they are when someone takes a minute to tell them how much they love their work. “Sometimes with me working full time in real life and coming here to work at nights and weekends it is hard and hearing that from people makes it all worth it. There is a passion out there for everyone and I feel so honored to inspire people, bloggers, other designers. And they do that for me, to motivate me to keep going. am definitely not a camper. The idea of going without traditional toilets, shower facilities and sleeping in a tent with bugs surrounding me definitely does not do it for me. While that may be my opinion, my husband absolutely loves it. The idea of being in the wild woods surrounded by nature, a drink in hand while he gets to make a fire, is definitely one of his happy places. Regardless of whether you like camping or not, plenty of nostalgic images come to mind when you think of camping including pitching tents and snuggling into sleeping bags after roasting marshmallows around a campfire with friends, enjoying the sounds of nearby wildlife and telling scary stories. One of the most popular all time choices when it comes to vacations, most people have experienced a camping trip – whether it be in the safety of their own backyard, as a Girl Guide or Boy Scout, or even a survivalist adventure. For some, it is a way to have a technology free trip or even to just go back to simpler life where cooking is done over an open fire far away from the hustle and bustle of normal life. For others, it provides the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and fishing while bonding with friends and family. For some like myself, however, this rugged, back to basics style vacation sounds more like a chore than a pleasure when one is accustomed to the luxuries of soft beds and electricity.

With the changing technologies and what is most definitely a female advancement, the concept of glamping is now a reality. ‘Glamping’ or Glam Camping and it is known in Europe, now allows people to go camping while using modern conveniences such as cottages or even public toilets and shower facilities. So you can get the enjoyment of the campfire and the S’mores still but with the inclusion of a nice soft bed! Whether you want to go camping or glamping, Second Life® is definitely not short of experiences for you or your family as camp grounds and camping accessories are readily available. A simple search for the term ‘campground revealing 13 hits ensuring you can visit and enjoy with your family or a group of friends. The facilities available generally suiting more traditional camping, you are able to ride horses, fish by the river and roast marshmallows. Most venues even supply tents which makes this a definite budget friendly holiday choice. And the best part of all is the fact that you can easily avoid the insects raiding your food and the tent pitching dilemma. Also, let’s face it, not everyone can make a fire by rubbing sticks together! So get those marshmallows, pack your backpack and head out to find the perfect camp ground that fits you, or create your own and enjoy yet another aspect within your own Second Life®.

nd they lived happily ever after… for many those words are both a beginning as much as an ending and they very often come up when we think about one of the greatest transitions in any love story. The wedding. Few things in our lives or our world inspire so much beauty, creativity, passion and focus as romance. It fills our songs and poems, our hearts and our minds, it drives us to new heights and keeps us going even when the going has gotten tough. Finding love can be a lifelong quest or a constant cycle for so many of us but when the time has come to declare that love in a perfect union, there are as many ways to represent this bond as there are love stories which have led up to that long walk down the aisle. In any world, the task of creating the perfect environment for an exchange of vows can be daunting to say the least. After all, how can we hope to capture the beauty of that first kiss with something so mundane as a flo-ral arrangement? Or to fully communicate the trust built through challenges and triumphs simply by choosing a color for the table cloths? There is simply too much to even the most time honored of love stories to do justice to, and all of that before considering the dreams and desires of the couple them-selves or the families involved. It becomes easy to see why in real life the task of piecing together a wedding has grown into a rather expensive prospect and a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Every culture and every religion has its own customs for a celebration so profound. Be it the ritual and circumstance of a tradi-tional Catholic ceremony or the multiple stages over the course of days in a customary Indian celebra-tion. Perhaps a more utilitarian approach of simply satisfying legalities down at the court house is more suited for the occasion and couple involved. Regardless of what proves to be the right fit for your love story, one thing can be considered universal. Symbolism. The very act of getting married is a symbol in and of itself. A declaration to the world that two lives are now one. A ring and vows exchanged is a symbol to all that two people are now partners and choose to face life together. So do we really need all the frills and pomp and circumstance in order to accomplish something so im-material and yet so monumental? That is more a question for each person who’s love leads them to this ultimate bond. Those of us who find a love story here on the grid are fortunate indeed, for Second Life® affords us the ability to celebrate this joyous occasion for far less financial burden than most real life parallels. We have the ability to follow our dreams to new heights and express our stories in a new fashion every week if we so choose. Only the limits of content creators, and prim counts, can hold us back from hosting the wedding of our heart’s desire.

Yet once again, we find ourselves faced with the complication of so many options. What is the right choice to symbolize your love? This question can be debilitating for many couples wishing to celebrate their union online. Indeed, with so much freedom and the literal ability to defy gravity (among other mundane considerations of the real world) it can become even more difficult to settle upon a theme, or color scheme, or venue, or any number of other details. After all, in a fantasy world shouldn’t the greatest fantasies of all be even more grand and beautiful than what we can be accomplish in everyday life? Well now that the pressure is really on, take a breath. The point isn’t to have the most grandiose affair the Lindens have ever seen. The point is simply love. Two hearts finding that precious connection and sharing the joy which results from it with those they know and care for. In fact, as two of our stylist will demonstrate, there’s no need for tying the knot to be some Gatsby worthy affair at all. A simple and natural approach can be just as stunningly beautiful and romantic if not more so. At the intimate setting created by Lauren Minuet, a very classic and elegant color scheme of ivory, gold and pink creates a powerful contrast with the natural and distressed woods and wildflowers surround-ing the space. Stepping into the venue is like entering a secret garden for a lover’s tryst. You feel as though you’re sharing a secret with the happy couple and twinkling lights entwined with flowering vines impart the feeling that this lovely dream will last all night long. Fine linen and china set amongst the trees and tall grasses leave little doubt that no detail has been overlooked and impart a feel of so-phistication as well as whimsy. No one will miss the ice sculpture or even consider looking for a release of doves when raising a toast to the Mr. and Mrs. sharing their first dance on the reclaimed wooden dance floor beneath a blooming gazebo. Let that be your guide when you’re creating the perfect space to share this heartfelt moment with those who’ve supported and cherished you both. Love stories fill our literature and our dreams. When we are lucky enough to live in one, the rest of the world falls away. It doesn’t take much to craft a perfect space to invite others into your dream with you. To share in your story and feel the passion you’ve found with that special someone only takes a little bit of symbolism. Let the little details reflect you both, and you will have been successful in creat-ing the perfect space to tie the knot. Then all you have to worry about is the ending and the beginning. leek, sexy lines, classy styling and expensive taste. One of the most influential decorative styles in the first half of the twentieth century, art deco first appeared in France in the 1920’s. It took its name from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes. Nowadays, people associate art deco with The Great Gatsby. Unfortunately, Leonardo DiCaprio is not included in most homes. Art deco was influenced by technological advances during that time. For example, instead of being heavily influenced by floral patterns, art deco adopted more geometrical lines and streamlined curves. The contrasts and lines became bolder. Aviation was a huge influencer in the design. So was Hollywood. The glamour of the silverscreen starting making its way around the world and into people’s houses. Believe it or not, the way automobiles were designed in the early twentieth century also influenced some segments of the art deco movement. So did the discovery of the tomb of Tutenkahmun, better known to you and I as King Tut. So does this mean you should be using old Egyptian tombs, airplanes and cars in your living rooms? Well, no. But you might already be without even realizing it. Let’s talk about some of the typical motifs in art deco that you’ll instantly recognize.

First, there’s the fan or shell pattern. One might say they were inspired by King Tut’s head dress, which is in the fan shape. The patterns were also influenced by the glitz and glamour of flappers and showgirls, who used fans while performing on stage. Still no sign of Leo, but let’s keep looking shall we? Another pattern that is quite prominent in art deco is called ziggurat. Ziggur-what? Don’t worry, I Googled it for you. And to be quite honest, for me too. Ziggurat means ‘to be built on a raised area.’ You can see this design used on the temples of ancient Mesopotamia. They have the form of a terraced pyramid with successively receding stories. The ziggurat style has been used on everything from elevator doors to carpeting. Now you can impress your friends and neighbors with some interesting knowledge about that cool wallpaper pattern you used in the bathroom. Possibly the most recognizable pattern associated with art deco, in part thanks to The Great Gatsby, is the geometric style. Heavily influenced by technological advances, the geometrical style demands a symmetric, streamlined shape. And not just in patterns for doors, rugs and walls. The art deco type font has the same sleek curves.

But what about furniture? Art deco furniture embraces metals like chrome and brass. There’s also an emphasis on leather, velvet, mother of pearl and even exotic animal skins. The influence of early Hollywood is also front and center. One of the most popular trends involved incorporating shiny materials into decor and furniture. There was a huge demand for drinking cabinets, cocktail and smoking paraphernalia thanks to most actors and actresses using those items on the big screen. And everything was high end, polished and luxurious. For the most part, the styles and patterns of art deco used a neutral color scheme of white, brown, black, chrome and brass. For the pops of color that some associate art deco with, we have to go to Miami. The beachfront city embraced fun, pastel colors and accentuated them with bright neon signs.

The art deco movement didn’t last long though, with the start of World War Two. Many people thought the lavish, opulent nature didn’t fit well with the state of the world back then. There were some new influences after the war ended but for the most part, art deco is frozen in time. One of the great things about art deco is the versatility of its geometric styles, bold lines and high contrast color. Adding a bit of glamour to your home can easily be done in real life, as well as in Second Life®. elcome to London, 1890. A time where the last visages of Victorian elegance are solely found in the highest of high societies and where the dawn of the industrial revolution breaks through the gray skyline of an aging era. The people are either caked in decadent refinery, or caked in the mud filth squalor of the slums.

and mysterious underpinnings. This show is magically wrought in dark canvases, rich textures, brilliant brocades, and has a very tangible grasp on the macabre. Gothic Revival never looked so good! How clever the timing is, no, how surreal and so perfect is the season, not even the great Dr. Frankenstein could deny its inevitability.

Coined, ‘the original urban society’, 1890 London has had its fair share of glaring contrasts with a ruling small elite versus an ever growing working class. A working class that was often the subject of abuse, ridicule, and left to more menial, servicing jobs, some cruel and many more dreadful.

The premise of the Penny Dreadful series can be described by most as a period piece. There were several interlacing decorative styles prevalent during this time in history including Victorian Gothic, Romanesque Revival, and Queen Anne Style. These styles may have been Roman and Medieval in its roots but very much Victorian in spirit. In the case of ‘Penny Dreadful’, production sets were meticulously designed around each character, with pieces carefully and deliberately placed as an addition to the total narrative.

It is here before the light of the 20th century, between the aspirations of the rich and the praying faithful of the poor, where we find the spark of a movement. Where the penultimate Victorian artiste, reaches for the past and brings forth a revival, solidifying himself or herself in a world gone to the silent monsters of greed and shame. A revival that typified the inner struggle of the times; a longing and freedom of creative expression while holding to traditions. This is true and clearly visible in that of the area of architecture and design. Our Living-On-Screen feature for this issue is based off of the hit television series, “Penny Dreadful”, whose central character, Vanessa Ives, takes captive audiences into the world of late 19th century London, with all of its dark

In times past, the power of storytelling in television was seen and heard through clever dialogue, plot theories run amok, and cliffhangers that were not easily forgiven. In this day and age, we are treated to storytelling en masse in the most lavish and grandiose of ways. Through computer generated graphics and rigorous research, talented individuals produce the unbelievable and even uncanny scenes from our most beloved stories be it, humor, gore, and yes even romance. They have come to life in words, in deeds and best of all, in inspiration!

Let us walk now, through time and history with some of the characters from the Penny Dreadful series, as they are surrounded by incredible scenes, delectable decor, and styles that befit their unique story line. We begin with Sir Malcolm Murray who plays the quintessential ‘Father Figure’, the patriarch, who frowns upon the patronizers and malevolent miscreants. A ma jority of the episodes take place in Sir Malcolm's personal residence; a real life mansion located in the Westminster borough of London, England. The architectural design is more classic than Gothic and boasts interiors both opulent and practical. The library and study are filled with curios from his travels through Africa. Traditional in style and design, the study is filled with leather bound books, a map of the world covering most of the rear wall and steady furnishings, lacquered, sturdy and classic. It belies this character’s thirst and passion for discovery. The deep greens, warm woods, and earthy tones make for much of Sir Malcolm's immediate surroundings. The adjoining parlor however, attests to his prominence and social standing in society. The rich lustre of chesterfield sofas flanking a luxuriously crafted marble fireplace, where attendees tell tales of night creatures and runaway shadow figures. The combination effect of the elegant green damask wallpaper, ornate rugs, and hardwood flooring makes this salon a most welcomed reprieve from the cold, dark gray that is looming just outside the mansion door. This gray has a story too.

We now leave the warmth of the home fires behind and dare to flee across the yawning void of the bustling, soul selling streets. At every corner there lies a threat, and everyone is a suspect, or worse. We tread along the cobblestone, and run our gaze over the high arched windows, and fully lit walkways to suddenly happen upon a handsome, young man. Here we enter a world where the line between time and death are synonymous. Where the self-indulgent engage in anything and everything self-serving. In his presence, even the strongest and staunchest of female counterparts, cannot easily dissuade the advances of Mr. Dorian Gray. As we enter his private residence, we are immediately transported into a world where time does not really exist. Opulence is manifested in simplicity, clean lines, minimal furnishings, more stylized and austere. An almost 180 degrees opposite of Sir Malcom’s abode. Dorian Gray is a man who lives outside of the boundaries of time. One could describe his salon, as art nouveau in style, not quite art deco, because of the time issue, but very much like it. The extravagance is spent on wall to wall marble flooring, pillars, staircase, and dozens upon dozens of ornately framed portraits as focal points in this most unusual yet familiar setting. Familiar in that, we are privileged to have brands such as Fancy Decor and The Loft, who understands period pieces and are not afraid to push the creative ‘norm’ we often see across the grid. Dorian Gray may have lived in the late 19th century, but he was not bound to it. Binding things, living and nonliving were left to more, learned men.

The end of the Victorian age brought about the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution, and with it changes and with changes, challenges. Men lay down their symbols of piety and reached for books in scientific theories. The women lay down their aprons and left their children at home. The world moved faster than ever before with logic and reasoning replacing the darker times of fiction and superstitions. It is here, above the noise and clamor where we find a young doctor, bent on playing God with science and knowledge as his tools of choice. Another glaring contrast in this ever darkening palette, we enter a room of organized and controlled chaos. Dr. Victor Frankenstein is the man of the hour. A man surrounded by glass beakers, test tubes, books, volumes and volumes of books, all manner of grotesque experiments, hung in suspended animation it seems, drowning in liquid preservatives that could curl the hair off the most dour of men. Frankenstein’s laboratory is a clash of ideas and practicality. It is here where we see a gentle nod to the Steampunk genre, where gears are plentiful, gas lighting abounds, machinery thrown together in hopes of creating a space to harness electricity. It is the Industrial Revolution in one space, with hidden layers and themes that the show presents so well. These hidden layers are not so hidden for viewers however. In the case of Vanessa Ives, who is the protagonist in this story, we see plainly a woman who longs to be at peace with her Creator and is not long for a world of materialism and the problems that go along with it. Vanessa chooses to surround herself with a simple elegance in both fashion and decor. Two

solitary sheer panels adorn her bedroom windows, her vanity uncluttered, her bed simple and sweet. A very obvious contrast to another female character. In this story, Frankenstein’s bride is powerful, elegant, a great lover of pleasure, money and fame. Immortality is her power for she flaunts so willingly. Not so with Miss. Ives, who wishes only to be pleasing to the one to whom she seeks solace from. In the latter episodes of the Penny Dreadful television series, we are introduced to a slew of characters including Lord Dracula himself. An unseeming choice of habitation, this creature of the night chooses to dwell among the night creatures. In museum-like form rather. Here again do we encounter the familiar arches of Gothic architecture. Taxidermy in some societies is an art form and even has a decorative quality. If there is one room, scene, place, location, where we could see all themes come together in astounding harmony, the Natural History Museum would be it. And it is here where we come to the final ‘resting place’ of our foray into the world of the Penny Dreadful. Behind the double doors of this museum there is a world of discovery that is brimming with knowledge of the past. It is here, where all light must gather and either be passed along or hidden beneath the cobblestones. It is here where our great love of all the styles of the ages converge into one sweeping scene. We have come to the ending of something, and are now ready for anything.

he simplicity, casual comfort and deep roots in agrarian history are just a few of the things to love about adopting a Tuscan garden design for your outdoor space. In a region of idyllic terraced vineyards, timeless stone homes crafted to be a part of the landscape, and warmth from both the sun as well as the hospitality of the locals; it seems only natural that beautiful and peaceful gardens would abound. After all, what better spot to enjoy a glass of a local vintage as the sun sinks below the horizon than a quiet outdoor sanctuary meticulously arranged to honor the natural surroundings? Let us wait no longer to discover what it takes to create your very own Mediterranean Eden for entertaining, exploring, or simply relaxing. A primary principle of the Tuscan garden is reflected in all designs from this region, honoring nature and all of the characteristic elements which are represented in the region. A palate of earthy tones is the best place to begin but that shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be confused for muted or pastel hues. Be it strong terracotta tans, passionate rubies, fiery oranges, or vibrant yellows; the colors you select should always be bright to stand up to the glare of the equatorial midday sun. These colors will also provide the best contrast to the subtle colors of the perennials most commonly displayed and the silvery foliage that is traditional. Simply be certain that whatever combination

you select mirrors the tones of mother nature and draws upon the Italian countryside from which our inspiration comes. It should be with a similar mindset that selections are made for the foundation elements of your outdoor space. The most commonly represented material is natural stone. It appears everywhere from the buildings themselves, to the tiles layered for a courtyard floor, to the rustic step stones creating a winding trail from the back door to a shaded alcove, and then again in the stacks forming a low wall which encircles the space. This timeless look lends itself beautifully with its versatility while continuing to honor the history of the Tuscan countryside. It is vital to remember to select a stone with the correct color scheme rather than a particular type. Anything from simple beige to a rusty orange to a warm brown will correctly reflect the theme selected. It is important that whatever is chosen emulates the warmth of the Mediterranean afternoon. When selecting accent pieces, there are a wide variety of options available and mixing these mediums is highly encouraged. Everything from a traditional wooden trellis, to colorful mosaic tiles, to the iconic terracotta planters and various clay urns will exemplify the motif we are striving to recreate. Simplicity should always be the guiding principle in picking each addition; however that shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t

deter from adding pieces of beauty and contrast. For example, the placement of an unadorned clay urn beside an ornate statuette upon a vibrant mosaic tabletop would be a fantastic combination. These more nature based selections shouldn’t be considered your only options though. Another common addition to many Tuscan gardens is iron. Be it in furnishings or ornate wall art or even elements of more fixed features such as a simple gate. This touch presents itself again and again. A balance of plush pillows will make a sturdy iron bench an inviting place to relax and chat with guests. In many Italian spaces, even the smallest features become works of art in this medium. Scrolled fences, simple hinges, custom crafted doorknobs and spigots are just a few places in which you can incorporate more of this practical nod to classical Roman design and architecture. Of course, no Mediterranean landscape would be complete without the inclusion of a water feature. The nights are getting longer and cooler, so what better time to set up an inviting fire pit patio to keep you warm. With that in mind, here is a DIY to show you how to create a contemporary, nature inspired fire pit with a shade structure to provide privacy.

3. The Steps: The Firepit. 1. Start by placing the Diedra coffee table and Black tray side table down. Then position the tray table in the center of the coffee table with just the top of the tray table showing on top of the coffee table. 2. Unlink the flame and rocks from the wicker basket, and position the rocks and flame centered inside the tray table. Delete the rest of the basket. 3. Link the items together and place where desired!
